SINCE it can be shown both theoretically'' : and experimentally that disordered Cu3Au has a greater internal energy than the ordered alloy, it might be expected that its chemical reactivity would be greater. Experiments were initiated' to test this hypothesis. This note will describe some recent results obtained in the study of the rates of corrosion of ordered and disordered polycrystalline Cu3Au by aqueous FeCl., The work of Robertson' has indicated that the attack by such solutions is intergran-ular and highly orientation dependent. It was of interest to see whether the order-disorder effect was great enough to overcome the variations from specimen to specimen which would arise from this type of attack. The polycrystalline alloy specimens (0.020 in. wire, 1¾ in. long) were preannealed in ½ atm H, at 700°C for 2 hr. The subsequent heat treatments to produce order and disorder were performed in M atm He. Disordered specimens were obtained by heating at 450°C for 2 hr and quenching in water. Ordered specimens were produced by heating for 2 hr at 450°, furnace cooling to 380°, and soaking at 380°C for 80 to 90 hr. Room temperature was reached by cooling to 150" at a rate never exceeding 7" per hr, and water quenching from 150°C. The specimens so produced exhibited electrical resistivities characteristic of the two states; of the order of 11.27x10 ohm-cm for the disordered, and 4.28x10 ohm-cm for the ordered specimens. The corrosion rates were studied at 30°C in ferric chloride solutions of several concentrations (?,¼, 1.5, and 1 molar). The specimens were attached to a stirrer during the tests. Tests were interrupted at intervals, and the specimen weight change was determined after washing and drying. Analysis of the solutions showed that the attack was limited to the copper. The higher corrosion rate for the disordered alloy, as illustrated in Fig. l, is typical of the results obtained. The effect of variation in ferric chloride concentrations is indicated in Table I for typical specimens. The variations in the ratio of reactivity for disordered and ordered specimens at the different concentrations are within experimental error, and the best value is estimated to be near 1.4. The experimental variation was due in part to the mode of attack, as mentioned, and in part to the fact that films were formed on the specimens under some conditions. Electron diffraction patterns of the films were very complex and indicated the presence of metallic iron, as did chemical analysis. In an attempt to eliminate the difficulties arising from the mechanism of attack, single crystal specimens were used. A greater reaction rate was again measured for the disordered specimens, but the reproduci-bility was no better than that for the polycrystalline metal. This would indicate that film formation was primarily responsible. It was concluded that the reaction with aqueous ferric chloride served to demonstrate that the reactivity of disordered Cu3Au is greater than that of the ordered alloy. However, the difficulties with film formation did not permit determinations of a precision great enough to warrant extension of the study to partially ordered alloy systems.

CHURN drilling equipment at Bagdad consists of two Bucyrus Erie 27-T model drills and one 22-T drill with gasoline engines. The drilling tools weigh approximately 1600 lb. The holes are drilled with 7-in. bits which are heated in an oil burning furnace and sharpened in an electrically powered bit sharpener. A service truck brings the bits to the drills and takes the dull bits back to the shop. The bits weigh around 250 lb. when new and are handled by drill crews without any mechanical handling device.

Every 12 minutes, a cable operated skip car appears from beneath the desert surface of Arizona's Papago Indian Reservation. The Papagos have become quite used to the car, particularly those whose paychecks depend upon its regular appearance. The 24-ton capacity skip or tramcar hauls copper ore out of the North Decline of Hecla Mining Company's new mine about 30 mi south of Casa Grande. While there's nothing particularly glamorous about the skip itself, the railroad system upon which it travels is interesting because of the unconventional way it was built.

Dynamic rock mechanic as it pertains to blasting has involved several areas of active research effort. Among the important problems which have been the subject of research are wave mechanics in rocks, mechanisms of rock breakage, cratering, applications of similitude, energy partitioning of explosives, coupling, and other related factors. In some of these areas many problems have received fairly complete answers, while in others, investigations have raised new questions while attempting to answer existing ones. The slabbing mechanism explains many of the phenomena observed in blasting, but is hot the complete answer to observed breakage and fragmentation phenomena. There is currently a gap between coupling experimental results and theory. Applications of similitude to open pit blasting have been made unnecessarily complicated. Basic scaling laws for large true and apparent craters have not been derived for either chemical or nuclear explosives. There are few useful data and little developed theory on the partitioning of energy of explosives in all types of blasting. No suitable mathematical model has been developed which will describe the stress waves in rock which are responsible for rock breakage: Significant progress has been and is being made in these areas of research, however. ELASTIC AND NONELASTIC WAVES Complete solutions for spherical wave equations in viscoelastic media are not available in the literature. Equations for certain viscoelastic models do show limited promise, however, of being applicable to rock masses, particularly for pulse type phenomena. In the good old days of the folklore of the mining industry, grizzled prospectors obtained a few loose dollars from friends and neighbours then wandered off to eventually return with the great discovery which became the core of the new corporate empires. Alternatively, merchant banking barons obtained exclusive rights to just about anything of future value over hugh nation-size territories. Some of this probably still goes on, likely with about the same ineffectiveness and waste of effort and money as in the past. CURRENT CONCERNS IN MINING In today's difficult climate in the mining industry, for that matter in all industry, effectiveness is the vital consideration. Cost effectiveness -- more bang for the buck -- is especially important in such an area of high risk as mineral exploration. And there are other factors to consider. Since minerals are depleting resources, the mining inddustry is constantly confronted with the reality that those resources extracted today must be immediately replaced if a resource enterprise is to continue. And if growth is to be achieved, even more resources must be found to support future expansion. The current and immediately foreseeable climate internationally for the mining industry creates a special need and urgency for aggressive and successful exploration, certainly in Canada, if not also in the United States. Depressed world markets and prices have turned yesterday's economic reserves into today's waste, hopefully to be converted into economic ore again in some distant time. One way of replenishing reserves and maintaining a viable mining industry is to find and develop mines which are economic under short-term depressed price and market conditions. This probably means higher grades. A new copper discovery with the right combination of characteristics to be an attractive investment even at today's pices for copper would still merit development into production. Exploration is the only way to find such mines for the difficult short-term conditions. Another important consideration is that normally many years stretch from the first thought of conducting exploration to production -- in those rare instances where an economic discovery is made. If discoveries are not made today, then there will not be any projects to develop when business conditions are more attrative. This industry and the vast number of skilled professionals who are part of mining, are faced with two key problems that underlie the need for a junior exploration segment. One consideration is how to maintain exploration during those years, indeed eras, of recession and depression. We are in such a time now. Throughout the world, major companies have sharply cut back, if not eliminated completely, exploration expenditures other than what is vitally necessary and easily and inexpensively done at the known and producing deposits. And related to that consideration, even more important today than during happier times, is how to finance such necessary ongoing exploration if major companies and governments back away because of financial stringency. CANADIAN SUCCESS In Canada, such problems are being tackled with a success which is capturing worldwide attention. The ability of mineral explorers to obtain willing, eager, high-risk capital is achieving even more outstanding results than in the past. These results are reflected in the widespread continuing exploration ativity in Canada which even spreads into the United States, with some outstanding discovery successes. The most notable exploration success from junior mining activity is the discovery of the Hemlo gold camp in northwestern Ontario, a source of gold which promises to rank with the South

WHEN Magma Copper Company in 1952 set about finding $100,000,000 to finance the project of developing and equipping the property of its lusty progeny, the San Manuel Copper Corporation, A. J. McNab, president and guiding genius for both companies (and incidentally a mining engineer by profession), determined that he would avoid the mistake frequently made in such circumstances, of underestimating the cost, and thereby running short of funds before the job was completed. The fear that this might happen was one of the reasons why insurance companies, one potent source of "big" money, were reluctant to finance the enterprise. How, they asked themselves, would Magma, a relatively small company, get additional money in such a contingency? Insurance officials' thumbs were turned down. Conditions Imposed by R.F.C. The upshot was the negotiation by Mr. McNab for San Manuel of a contract with the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, dated July 10, 1952, whereby needed monies in amount up to $94,000,000 would be advanced as a loan, bearing 5 per cent interest. Arrangements were made for the separate financing of the new $10,000,000 town, needed for the project, through the Del E. Webb Construction Company of Phoenix, Arizona, and M.O.W. Homes, Incorporated, of Los Angeles. Thus the $94,000,000 drawing account was believed ample to provide for building the railroad, the mine plant, the concentrator, and the smelter, as well as for the underground development of the mine needed to start production. Si-Fe single crystals in a number of selected orientations were cold rolled 70 pct and analyzed to obtain quantitative (110) pole figures. Stable end orientations were ddetermined, and the effect of orientation on deformation behavior was investigated. WHEN single crystals are cold rolled sufficiently, they rotate into end orientations that are stable or unchanged in position with additional deformation. The end orientations of heavily cold-rolled iron crystals, positioned in holes in copper to limit lateral flow and to simulate polycrystalline conditions during deformation, were determined by Barrett and Levenson.' They found that the sum of the end orientations, a pole figure for all the crystals studied, reproduced the essential features of the cold-rolled texture of polycrystalline iron. In. an investigation of Fe-Si alloys, Barrett, Ansel, and Mehl' observed little effect of silicon content on the textures of heavily cold-rolled samples. Since alloys with less than 4 pct Si are known to have the same slip systems as iron," it seems logical to expect that they would also have the same end orientations as those for iron. Whereas Barrett and Levenson in their study of single crystals were interested in the problem of the origin of the cold-rolled texture of polycrystalline iron, the present authors are more interested in the final cold-rolled textures of single crystals of Si-Fe from the point of view of their relationship to subsequent recrystallization phenomena which will be reported in another paper. Nevertheless, such points as the tendency of an end orientation not to rotate (stability), the tendency of a pole concentration to spread out, and the tendency of the crystal to widen during cold rolling become interesting separately when the initial orientations are selected already in end orientations. Also the initial orientations having a [I101 axis parallel with the transverse direction, which include the two end orientations (111) [Ti21 and (001) [110], comprise a series that needs further clarification regarding the way such crystals rotate during deformation. Finally the present use of quantitative pole figure methods* represents an advance over the X-ray photographic method employed by Barrett and Levenson in their work on end orientations. The present investigation provides information on the cold-rolling behavior of two groups of Si-Fe crystals: 1-—crystals initially oriented in recognized end orientations for iron crystals with a [I101 direction parallel with the rolling direction, and 2— crystals initially oriented with a [I101 direction 90" to the rolling direction and in the rolling plane. For the second group, there is a 90" range between the (001) [110] orientation and the (110) [001] orientation. Since the 35" portion of this range from (110) [OOl] to (111) Di2] was included in a previous investigation," only the remaining 55" portion from (111) fii2] to (001) [I101 needs further consideration. Also, since both (111) [xi21 and (001) [I101 are end orientations for iron crystals,' there might be a critical orientation* or orientation range be- • W. W. Martin and C. G. The end orientations obtained are discussed in connection with the work of Barrett and Levenson, while the observed tendency for lateral flow of crystals in these orientations is treated in terms of the theory of Hibbard and Yen.' Lateral flow according to the theory increases with deviation of the plane containing the rolling direction and the slip direction from a position perpendicular to the plane of rolling. Based on metallographic and X-ray data probable equilibrium conditions from 1340" to 2400°F are presented for the composition range investigated. These are correlated with investigations of Takei and Kuo. Provision is made for existence of Mo, C and (Fe, Mo)2,C, carbides heretofore omitted in diagrams in this composition range. These carbides and (Fe, Mo),C, in equilibrium with ferrite and austenite, restrict the austenite and austenite + ferrite fields to lower carbon contents and higher temperatures than in the Fe-C system. OK groups of steel of different molybdenum content, but with approximately the same carbon variation in each group, Table I, were studied. The alloys were melted in an acid-lined 30-lb high-frequency induction furnace, and the ingots forged to l-in. rounds, which were then ground to 0.75-in. diam. To minimize chemical segregations a short length of each bar was given a high-temperature heat treatment as listed in Table I. Specimens 0.062 to 0.125-in. thick were thereafter cut from the homogenized bars for heat treatment to determine phase changes in the alloy. Heat treatments were performed in either a lead bath or muffle-type electric furnace, depending upon the temperature required. Maximum temperature variation was * 2" F in the lead bath and * 5"F up to 1900°F and +8"F above 1900°F in the electric furnace. Adequate protection of the specimen from the oxidizing atmosphere in the electric furnace was obtained by sealing the specimen in either a pyrex or a silica capsule which was evacuated or not as circumstances required. For austenitizing followed by quenching to an isothermal temperature, the specimen was placed in a closed-end refractory tube the mouth of which, extending beyond the furnace, was connected to a vacuum pump. The specimen could be withdrawn from this tube and quenched as desired. IDENTIFICATION OF PHASES The principal method of identification of phases was metallographic examination conducted on surfaces well removed from exposure to lead or atmosphere effects during heat treatment. Hardness measurements (Dph/lOkg) were also made on these surfaces. The etching reagents used and their effects are listed in Table II. Martensite and ferrite were readily recognized by their customary appearance after etching with saturated picral or 1 pct nital. The presence of liquid at high temperature was indicated by curved interfaces characteristic of boundaries between solid and melt, by intergranular pools of dendritic areas in a carbide matrix, and by a black network coincident with austenite grain boundaries. Examples of these structures are shown in Figs. l(a) and (0). The types of carbide which were attacked by the electrolytic chromic acid etch and the alkaline KMnO, etch, Table 11, were identified by X-ray analyses of extracted carbides of five alloys. Carbide residue was obtained from a metallographic specimen by etching the specimen for 24 hr in hydrochloric-picric acid in alcohol (grain-size reagent), after which the carbides, standing in relief, were scraped from the surface of the specimen and mounted on a glass slide. Diffraction patterns were obtained with a Philips spectrometer using iron-filtered cobalt radiation. Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 illustrate typical etching behaviors with chromic acid and alkaline KMnO,. Chromic acid attacked Mo,C as shown in Figs. 2(a) and (b)-but not (Fe, Mo),C, Fig. 3(b). Alkaline KMnO, attacked (Fe, Mo),C, Fig. 3(c), and also attacked M0,C. In accordance with these behaviors, a typical differentiation of coexisting Mo,C and (Fe, Mo),~ is shown in Figs. 4(a) and (b). The carbide (Fe, Mo),,C, could not be obtained free of other coexisting carbides for etching experiments. The behavior. however. of coexisting carbides identified by x-ray diffraction as Mo,C ind (Fe, Mo),,C, indicate that (Fe, Mo)23C6 is not etched by chromic

Measurements of rate of growth, thermodymmic quantities, and partitioning of Mn are reported for high-purity eutectoid Fe-C and Fe-C-Mn steels for the auistenite-pearlite reaction. Evaluztion of the cotnstants of a derived-rate equation with these data indicate that Mn additions cause the decrease observed by increasivg the activation energy and apparent activation entropy or the movenment of complexes at the interface. A diffusion-controlled mechanism is not required. Appreciable partitioning of Mn to cementite occurs entirely behind the austenite-pearlite interface for more than 30°C of subcooling. ThE growth of pearlite from austenite has been extensively studied over a period of years. but the rate-controlling step in the process is not known nor is the mechanisrn of the effect of alloying elements understood. A comprehensive review of the subject has been given by Mehl and Hagel. The present study has been concerned with further considerations of the effects of alloying elements on the rate of growth of pearlite. Analytical relatioriships for the rate of growth of pearlite have been considered by Zener.2 Turnbull,3 Machlin,4 Cahn.5 Frye,6 and Frye et a1.7 The derived expressions in each case involve the free energy of the transformation. the interlamellar spacing. and some rate term of the nature of the diffusion coefficient. mobility or frequency of occurrence of some rate-determining step. The treatments. of course. differ in detail. Further consideration is given in the present paper to the equation of Frye, Stansbury. and McElroy which was derived from modified absolute rate theory without in any way specifying the mechanism of the reaction. Subsequently, Darken, Fisher, and Galligan8 have reported that a layer of ferrite separates pearlite from austenite at the growing interface (i,e., the advancing face of Fe3C is in contact with ferrite, not austenite) and the ratio of the thickness of this layer to the spacing of the pearlite has not been found to vary with alloy content or transformation temperature. This observation does not require any alteration in the above equation: however, it may require that a different significance be attached to the factor, AT. The AT term appears in Eq. IN recent years interest has been aroused in flotation rate studies both from a technical and a more practical aspect. With increasing fineness of grind becoming a necessity in treatment of low grade ores, difference:; in flotation rates of various size ranges will assume importance in the evaluation of overall recovery results. Theoretical analysis of flotation kinetics was initiated by Schuhmann,' who sought to define flotation rate of a given mineral and specified size range in terms of certain physical variables of the flotation system. Using as a basis for his analysis the bubble-particle encounter hypothesis previously advanced by Gaudin,' Schuhmann writes for the rate of flotation (R,.) of particles of average size x, Rx = PcPa(x) V F. [1] In this relation Pc and Pa represent, respectively, the probability of collision between particle and gas bubble in a given time interval and the probability of adhesion of particle to the bubble after collision. Rigorously speaking, the term PC does not have the significance of a probability factor, since it depends on the time interval and therefore can be numerically greater than unity. The term c(x) expresses the concentration of particles of an average size x in the flotation cell in weight per unit volume of pulp, and V denotes the total volume of pulp in the cell. The product, P,c(x)V, defines the frequency of particle-bubble collisl.on, and when it is multiplied by P,, the number of collisions per unit time resulting in successful adherence is obtained. The factor, F, measures the froth stability and is introduced because after fruitful bubble-particle contact some particles may still riot reach the froth launder. Coalescence of bubbles in the froth column or too short a bubble life could account for this effect. Schuhmann also introduced the concept of "specific flotation rate" (Q) to allow for the relative abundance of different mineral species in the flotation pulp. The specific flotation rate, having the dimension of reciprocal time, is defined as Eq. 2: Qx =Rx/c(x)v [2] and it also follows from Eq. 1 that Qx = PcPaF. [31 The theoretical aspects of flotation kinetics were also considered by Sutherland,3 who tried to improve Eq. 1 by expressing the probability factors in terms of such physical variables as particle radius (x), bubble radius (X), velocity of bubble relative to particle (v), the number of bubbles per unit volume of pulp (N) and the induction period (A) necessary for air-mineral adhesion. Since 1923, which closed the speculative era in the bituminous coal fields of the United States, there have been wide annual fluctuations in the national production of bituminous coal. These changes in annual output have been variously attributed to: (1) increased competition from petroleum products, natural gas and hydroelectric power; (2) lower unit consumption of coal; and (3) fluctuations in the general business level. The purpose of this paper is to measure, from a practical standpoint, the net effect upon the annual trend of bituminous coal production, and to give those who are interested a basis for estimating in advance the probable output of bituminous coal. It can readily be shown that changes in the level of general business affect the national production of bituminous coal more than does any other factor. Therefore it is necessary to use some standard measure of the relative business level for purposes of comparison. The Federal Reserve Board Index of Industrial Production offers the basis for such a measure.l This Index, a weighted composite of 81 different series, rests upon the averages of the years 1935 to 1939 as 100, and is presented graphically in Fig. I. Even a cursory examination of the chart will indicate a definite uptrend for industrial production over a period of years. This uptrend is due to at least two factors: (I) an actual increase in national population, and (2) a probable increase in the per capita consumption of goods. This means that there is no such thing as a fixed Normal, rather Normal is a variable, tending to increase from year to year. In order to measure the amount of annual increase in normal, the Index of Industrial Production must be studied in relation to its major components, Durable Goods and Nondurable Goods, Durable Goods are those made from the lasting materials such as iron, steel, other metals, lumber, stone, cement, clay, glass. Since 1923, which closed the speculative era in the bituminous coal fields of the United States, there have been wide annual fluctuations in the national production of bituminous coal. These changes in annual output have been variously attributed to: (1) increased competition from petroleum products, natural gas and hydroelectric power; (2) lower unit consumption of coal; and (3) fluctuations in the general business level. The purpose of this paper is to measure, from a practical standpoint, the net effect upon the annual trend of bituminous coal production, and to give those who are interested a basis for estimating in advance the probable output of bituminous coal. It can readily be shown that changes in the level of general business affect the national production of bituminous coal more than does any other factor. Therefore it is necessary to use some standard measure of the relative business level for purposes of comparison. The Federal Reserve Board Index of Industrial Production offers the basis for such a measure.l This Index, a weighted composite of 81 different series, rests upon the averages of the years 1935 to 1939 as 100, and is presented graphically in Fig. I. Even a cursory examination of the chart will indicate a definite uptrend for industrial production over a period of years. This uptrend is due to at least two factors: (I) an actual increase in national population, and (2) a probable increase in the per capita consumption of goods. This means that there is no such thing as a fixed Normal, rather Normal is a variable, tending to increase from year to year. In order to measure the amount of annual increase in normal, the Index of Industrial Production must be studied in relation to its major components, Durable Goods and Nondurable Goods, Durable Goods are those made from the lasting materials such as iron, steel, other metals, lumber, stone, cement, clay, glass. Experimental data demonstrate that physical properties of porous rocks change under pressure. In this paper an assumption is made and proved that under pressure the changes of physical properties such as porosity, density, permeability, resistivity and velocity of elastic waves are controlled to a large extent by the pore compressibility of rocks. It is also shown that the pore compressibility of rocks can be determined, within the range of pressures from 0 to 20,000 psi, by knowing the maximum pore compressibility and the magnitude of the pressure. Mathematical equations were developed which permit one to define changes in physical properties of porous rocks under pressure. These equations were verified by experimental data obtained from the study of sandstones. INTRODUCTION In studying the behavior of porous rocks under pressure in the field of petroleum technology, the most interesting aspect is the observation of those properties which characterize the rocks as possible reservoirs — for example, porosity, permeability, resistivity, density and the velocity of elastic waves. The literature dealing with this problem mainly contains data concerning the study of only one or at most two of these parameters, but not of the group as a whole. An attempt is made in this paper to find general equations involving each of these parameters, which will permit the study of the behavior of rocks under pressure. All experimental data used here were obtained from the investigation of consolidated sandstones. EXPERIMENTAL In addition to the use of published experimental data, an experiment was carried out which studied the main physical properties of sandstones under pressure. Two homogeneous quartz sandstones were chosen for this purpose: (1) the Torpedo sandstone from Kansas, and (2) the Medina sandstone from Ohio. The porosity of the Torpedo sandstone was 20.2 per cent, and that of the Medina 8.7 per cent. Permeabilities were 45 md and less than 1 md, respectively. Each sandstone contained about 5 per cent clay minerals, consisting mostly of kaolinite and chlorite, which were distributed quite evenly throughout the samples. One cylindrical sample 2 in. in diameter and 5 in. in length was cut from each sandstone and then saturated in a vacuum with a 3N solution of NaC1. This high concentration was used in order to obtain true formation factors and to decrease the swelling of the clay minerals. The methods of mounting the samples and measuring the changes in porosity and resistivity were practically the same as those described by Fatt and Mann.1,2 Changes of resistivity under pressure were studied for sandstones with 100 per cent water saturation, and for sandstones with the irreducible water saturation. The irreducible saturation was obtained by enclosing the saturated rock samples in relatively fine silicate powder so as to remove the water by capillary action. This procedure is described by Orkin and Kuchinski.3 Changes of permeability with pressure were determined at room temperature using nitrogen as the flowing medium. In studying the effects of pressure, one series of measurements was made using an internal pore pressure Pi equal to the atmospheric pressure, while the overburden pressure Pe ranged from 0 to 20,000 psi. A second series of measurements was used over the same range of overburden pressure, but with an internal pore pressure of 1,800 psi. When the results were compared on the basis of net overburden pressure (Pe — 0.85 Pi ), there was practically no difference for these two sandstones. Practical miscible displacement processes will be characterized by lingering of the solvent into the oil. The lingering process is brought on by viscosity differences, and can be accentuated by channeling and longitudinal dispersion. The effects of these factors on the efficiency of unstable completely miscible displacements are combined in what is called the K-factor method. This method, analogous to the Buckley-Leverett method, predicts recovery and solvent cut as a function of pore volumes of solvent injected. Experimental data are included and show excellent agreement with theory for a wide variety of sandstone cores and viscosity ratios. INTRODUCTION Theoretical considerations,1 laboratory experiments,2 and pilot tests3 lead to the conclusion that miscible displacements in the field will be unstable In an unstable miscible displacement, the solvent fingers through the oil. This fingering leads to early breakthrough of the solvent and an extended period during which both oil and solvent are produced. For such a system, there appear to be four principal factors which bring about or accentuate the effects of instability: longitudinal dispersion (including geometrical effects), channeling, viscosity differences and gravity differences. Other factors, such as diffusion and flooding rate, can also influence the effects of instability, but at the flooding rates considered in this report, circa 15 ft/D, they are unimportant. Longitudinal dispersion can be thought of as a spreading of the solvent front caused by the presence of microscopic inhomogeneities. Channeling of the solvent occurs when a porous medium has macroscopic inhomogeneities; i.e., gross permeability variations. Viscosity differences lead to fingering of the less viscous solvent. This difference in viscosity accelerates the growth of fingers along paths previously developed because of permeability variations. Gravity differences lead to overriding by the usually less dense solvent. Al- though gravity effects are generally small at a flooding rate of 15 ft/D, they would, nevertheless, unnecessarily complicate the interpretation of flooding experiments. For this reason, all the experiments reported herein were done with matched density fluids. Fingering and the resultant poor areal sweep were recognized early as the dominant influences on the efficiency and the economics of miscible displacement processes. Much research effort has been spent on ways to minimize fingering and increase areal sweep such as the use of graded viscosity slugs4 or water slugs. Some researchers attempted to work out ways to prevent fingering completely; i.e., to achieve a stable displacement through gravity or latitudinal dispersion stabilization. l Others did not attempt to control fingering but obtained an economic process by merely recycling the solvent and sweeping pattern by pattern.6 During this period, all aspects of fingering came under close scrutiny. Some researchers reported on how fingering looks2 and how it is affected by viscosity ratio,7 geometry,7 and slug size.2,* Peaceman and Rachfordg suggested a mathematical approach to the prediction of unstable miscible displacements in relatively homogeneous sand packs, but their work cannot be extended conveniently to heterogeneous systems. Hence for a heterogeneous system, no method is presently available for predicting solvent cut and recovery as functions of pore volumes of solvent injected. The purpose of this investigation was to attempt to fill in the gap in our knowledge concerning the prediction of performance of unstable miscible dis placements. Necessarily, the system selected for study was a relatively simple one. The restrictions placed on the system were: (1) The system was linear; (2) The solvent was miscible in all proportions with the oil in place; (3) The solvent was continuously injected into the porous medium; (4) Gravitational effects were eliminated by matching densities and (5) All the flood rates were high and constant at 15 ft/D to avoid any small rate effect and to minimize any diffusion effects. To simplify and to indicate that both longitudinal dispersion and channeling arise from permeability variations, the effects which they cause or influence have been termed heterogeneity effects. Described herein are the results obtained during research work involving coating titanium alloys with molybdenum by vapor-deposition methods. Results show that the method can be used successfully to deposit hard adherent wear-resistant coating of methodmetallic molybdenum on titanium or titanium alloys without changing the microstructure of the titanium base. PRODUCTION and use of titanium and its alloys have increased tremendously in the past few years. The physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of this engineering metal have caused considerable enthusiasm among metallurgists and engineers. However, as with all materials, there are some drawbacks. For example, titanium is susceptible to seizing and galling on wearing surfaces. In order to produce a good wear-resistant surface, many investigations have been conducted evaluating oxidizing, carburizing, nitriding, carbonitriding, sili-conizing, and chromizing of titanium. All of these processes require high temperatures for rather extensive periods of time. It has been possible to produce hard surfaces on titanium and its alloys by a number of these processes at the expense of a deterioration of the physical properties of the base material. A practical solution to the problem of providing titanium and titanium alloy parts with a satisfactory wear-resistant nongalling surface must be one that does not involve excessive temperatures for long periods of time. Sam Tour & Co. Inc. has completed a research and development contract for the United States Army Ordnance Corps on vapor deposition of molybdenum on titanium and titanium alloys. On the basis of results obtained from the research program, titanium alloys can be coated successfully with molybdenum to provide a hard wear-resistant surface without harm to their base mechanical properties. The remainder of this article is a description of the techniques used to apply the coating and the results obtained from wear tests on molybdenum-coated titanium. Theory Basically, the technique used was the application of molybdenum by a vapor-deposition method, thermal decomposition of molybdenum hexacarbonyl [Mo(CO)] with hydrogen as the carrier gas. The selection of this method was based chiefly on the following considerations: 1—low plating temperature which would minimize excessive grain growth, 2— low decomposition temperature of the carbonyl, 3— possibilities of controlling the hardness of the plate by adjusting the carbon content using the plating temperature and pressure as the primary variables, 4—use of high vacuum, thereby avoiding unnecessary oxidation and other complex reactions with the atmosphere. Free energy data1 show the strong tendency for titanium to combine with O2 N2 or carbon from normal temperatures to temperatures above its melting point. To maintain the titanium in a film free condition, the use of as high a vacuum as possible is indicated. The literature' indicates that the reaction product of hydrogen with titanium is unstable in vacuum at around 400°C. 5—Although it is indicated from the thermodynamic standpoint that there is little possibility of removing carbon from either titanium or molybdenum, the work of Lander and Germer -ndicates that the use of a suitable H,/CO ratio is somewhat effective in minimizing carbon deposition. 6—Availability of molybdenum carbonyl. In the simplest form, the conditions of equilibrium3 in chemical reactions involving decomposition of carbonyl are as follows: Mo (CO) ? Mo + 6CO 2CO * C + CO,. The plating rate is proportional to the rate of evolution of CO from the decomposed carbonyl, i.e., it is proportional to the pressure of the gaseous decomposition products. Carbon released from CO gas is the significant constituent for the variability of the physical properties of the product. High carbon deposition is favored by increasing pressure. Recent investigations have elucidated many of the phenomena of the grain growth process, but have also revealed some conflicting and unexplained results. Beck and his co-workers 1,2,3 have shown that grain growth continues with continued heating at one temperature until the average grain size approaches the thickness of the specimen. Plotting the logarithm of the average grain diameter, D, against the logarithm of the annealing time, t, they find the straight line relationship given by the equation: D = Ktm [,] with possible small deviations at short annealing times. K and n are constants at constant temperature. On the other hand, Wa1ker4 finds that, in alpha brass) the rate of growth falls off more rapidly than indicated by Eq i after long annealing, so that an equilibrium grain size is approached. Burke5 showed, using Walker's data, that time and temperature for grain growth are apparently related through an activation energy, H, according to the relationship: ] where h and tz are the annealing times necessary for the average grain size to increase from Do to D at temperatures T1 and T2 and R is the gas laws constant. In the case quoted, H had the value 60,000 cal per mol. The apparent validity of this relationship, at least up to 700°C, and the approximate value of H were later confirmed by Beck3 The results obtained by Beck Kremer, Demer and Holzworth2 for aluminum and aluminum-magnesium alloys could not be satisfied by such a relationship, since the slope of the isothermal curves increased with increasing temperature. These data indicate and Beck, Holzworth and HuV ater demonstrated expcrimentally that the only apparent factor controlling the rate of grain growth at constant temperature is the grain size. While many of the phenomena have been elucidated, a reasonably quantitative explanation of the process is lacking. There exists uncertainty even as to the primary driving force for grain growth, although there is a considerable body of indirect evidence that the interfacial energy of the grain boundary is responsible.7,8,io Making implicit use of this assumption, several authors14,16 have pointed out that grain boundaries should migrate toward their center of curvature. Harker and Parkerg have advanced this concept furthest, and show that one can expect grain boundary migration to occur only when the grain faces are curved, or when they meet at non-equilibrium angles. When the face is curved toward a grain A, for example, the atoms in the surface of grain B, on the other side of the boundary7 are on the average more surromded by the atoms of their lattice than the atoms on the surface of grain A.
