The problem considered in this paper is as follows: An arbitrary horizontally stratified area is given. The electrical properties of this area are characterized by a function p(z) (Fig. I), which shows the relationship between resistivity p of the soil and the depth z. For such general case the apparent resistivity p* will be computed, by earth-resistivity measurements carried out by any given configuration of electrodes. General solutions of this problem appear to be very important for interpretation of field results of resistivity measurements, concerning structural investigations. Such solutions have been given by many authors for the special case of a finite number of homogeneous layers (Fig. 2)lV4 as well as for the more general case of continuously ranging resistivities.5-8

E. D. HYMAN*—How much sorting of scrap is done ? G. E. JOHNSON (author's reply)—We do practically no sorting. We charge "run of mine" scrap to the furnace. The unmeltables, mostly iron, are in such demand today that there is no difficulty in disposing of them. It may soon be desirable to sort out from the unmeltables as much of the brass as possible. J. J. BRUGMAN†—We have somewhat similar problems in the secondary aluminum business. What is your method of removing the unmelted material from the furnaces? Why have you such an apparently small space in which to charge your materials? Do you find that you have to seal that opening, or can you have it open and continuously charge at one end and pull out the other ? G. E. JOHNSON—Our means of melting scrap is efficient only to the extent that we use the waste heat from the vaporizing chamber to do the job. It is a batch process. We open the charge door and place the scrap on the hearth by hand shoveling. The door is then closed during the melting down period. After the melting is complete, the opposite door is opened and the unmeltables are raked out. The doors are approximately 3½ X 4½ ft and are not sealed during the process only closed. They are nominally tight. Some metal is oxidized in the process. We have visualized a means of conveying the materials through this melting unit with the metals that are melted trickling out during its travel. T. H. WELDON‡—Mr. Johnson, in line with the last question, is it necessary to seal the furnace between the melting down and the vaporizing unit, or have you got an inverted syphon in the bottom of the chamber? G. E. JOHNSON—That was one of the first things we encountered. We had to have a sealed opening, and it is a molten metal seal. You have indirectly asked me another question, which was: "Do you have to seal up the melting unit?" I would say we should exclude as much air as possible, although we are not too efficient in doing that. We allow the melting unit doors to be open when we charge and when we remove unmeltables. You can readily see that that would lead to the idea of having a controlled atmosphere in the melting unit, and I think this would do a more efficient job of melting the scrap. T. H. WELDON—How often do you charge the furnace? G. E. JOHNSON—We charge the melting unit, and rake out the unmeltables, about every hour. H. R. HANLEY*—Are any provisions made for controlling the rate of oxidation for the production of various size particles for certain characteristics of the zinc oxide product? G. E. JOHNSON—Yes, there are many. You are getting pretty much into the fine points of zinc oxide manufacture. Some of us still think we have something to learn about that. In general, this muffle furnace as I have described it to you produces a rounded particle of zinc oxide which is generally formed by a rapid oxidation of the zinc vapor, followed by rapid cooling. We have gone to the other extreme in some of our experiments. We have changed the furnace to produce a type of zinc oxide, such as we thought was peculiar to American process zinc oxide, by controlling the temperature at the point of oxidation and maintaining that temperature for a much longer period of time than we do when we make the rounded shape. There are other relationships that this furnace readily provides. One of the important factors is the ratio of air to zinc vapors. We can vary that by varying the air supply to the baghouse, or vary the rate at which we are vaporizing the zinc by the simple expedient of regulating the temperature over the carborundum arch. We have a number of variables that permit us to produce all of the grades of French process zinc oxide from lead-free up through the highest grades of seal oxides. There are many controls that we can apply to the operation. What I have said is but a brief condensation. K. MORGAN*—Can Mr. Johnson give us some idea of the fuel consumption of the furnace ? How much oil does he use per ton of zinc distilled? I am also interested to know what sort of heat transmission he gets through the arch? What is the thickness of the tiles used to construct the arch? Some time ago we built a small furnace for a different purpose, using a carborundum arch, and we found that the reflectivity of the molten zinc surface was so great we had to use a very high arch temperature. We found we made an improvement by having a layer of carbon on the surface of the zinc. Has Mr. Johnson had any experience on these points ? Does he make any sort of insolu-bles which he leaves in the furnace which he cannot tap out ? G. E. JOHNSON—I believe your first question was the fuel consumption. If I recall, somewhere in this paper there is a test that I quote. I believe we used 800 gal in a given period of time. Offhand I cannot translate that into tons of metal. I might also state that we have this understanding; that the carborundum arch, as the temperature becomes higher, becomes more efficient in heat transmission. As a matter of fact, I believe it is at about 2600°F or higher that the highest efficiency of heat transmission becomes available. We have calculations that I cannot quote from memory which indicate that the carborundum arch does a really very fine job for this type of furnace. Another point that we had considered was the fact that this furnace could be readily constructed so as to furnish an ideal source of heat for waste heat boilers. If a carborundum arch was used over the melting unit, we would have no zinc vapors in the gases at all— just clean combustion gases from which we would have removed some of the heat. L. P. Ghenn.*—It has been established that the accuracy obtainable from any precision machine is a function of the wear resistance, maintenance and closeness of fit of the bearings, hence I would like to ask Mr. Toeplitz how these oil-less bearings compare with cast iron or babbitt or similar materials when used on precision machinery. Could these bearings be used, for example, on a grinding machine in which work must be held to a tolerance of plus or minus 0.000025 inch? W. R. TOEPLITZ.—The metal-powder bearings can be held to very close tolerances and are used in place of cast iron and babbitt on precision machinery.

The effectiveness of coal mine face ventilation and the ability of airflow to maintain satisfactory methane and respirable dust levels in the working face area has been studied through the use of scale modeling techniques and underground testing procedures. In particular, consideration has been given to examination of the effects of operation of a high airflow, machine mounted dust scrubber unit on face air patterns. Results obtained through a cooperative study with the Peabody Coal Co. demonstrate that new mining cycles can be considered that increase production efficiency while maintaining satisfactory ventilation conditions.

With over one year experience, Western Deep Levels Ltd., reports satisfactory operation with new features of its 200,000 ton per month gold reduction plant. Western Deep is Anglo American group's newest gold mine. It is situated 43 miles west of Johannesburg on the West Wits Line and will ultimately be extracting ore from a depth of 13,000 ft. Although the plant was put in production in March 1962, after a three month break-in period, construction of the fifth milling section was not completed until last month.

The mechanism of blasting and the effect that blasting has on rock properties including the generation of new cracks and the opening of existing joints is discussed and compared with changes in seismic velocities. .Knowing the extent of blast induced damage and the overall stable slope angle it is shown that it is possible to design blasting so as not to induce any damage behind the toe of the blast area. Practical methods of blasting to meet this criterion and the results of these blasts are then discussed.

IN February 1952 Freeport Sulphur Company started exploration work on a group of lateritic deposits at Moa Bay, Cuba. As a result of successful exploration work and a vast amount of metallurgical research over the past five years, these deposits will soon become a new Free World source of nickel and cobalt. Moa Bay lies on the north coast of Oriente Province, the easternmost part of the island, about 600 miles east of Havana and about 40 miles east of the U. S. Government nickel plant at Nicaro.

On its tenth anniversary, the computer is a "fact-of- life" in the mineral industries. Its evolution as a practical mining tool was accurately summarized by Alfred Weiss, editor of the Proceedings of the 1969 International Computer Application Symposium, A Decade of Digital Computing in the Mineral Industry: "During the past decade, data processing and operations research developments within the mineral industry have evolved through states typical of any new technique. These have ranged from mere recognition, to cautious acceptance, to confident utilization, and in some instances, to substantial investment in computer hardware and software."

THIRTY per cent of the mineral wealth of the United States is obtained from seven states: Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. This area, which produced 84,727,156,000 worth of minerals in 1948, constitutes an almost complete economic unit in relation to mineral resources essential to industry. All of these states are producers of fuels and some of metallics, but in the field of important nonmetallic industrial minerals the picture is near perfection-a mineral any one of the seven states lacks, one of the others has in quantity.

News has just been received that Flight Commander William T. Hall, a Junior Member of-the Institute, was killed in action on Saturday, May 19, 1917. According to the' Toronto Star, Commander Hall was 24 years of age, a native of Toronto, and a grandson of the late William Kersteman. During the four years of his course in mining at the School of Practical Science, Toronto University, he passed every examination with honors. When war was first declared Commander Hall endeavored to join the artillery as an officer, and for that purpose secured a provisional lieu- tenancy with a Hamilton battery, but he did not receive an overseas appointment, and on being graduated as a mining engineer in 1915, he was offered a position in Chile, which he accepted. He left Toronto on May 27, 1915, and was engaged in Chile as a mining engineer for nearly a year. In the latter part of April, 1916, he decided to offer himself again for service at the front. He crossed the Andes and sailed for Liverpool, where he landed on May 13, 1916. On May 27, 1916, Capt. Hall was given a commission as lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps. He went to the front on Sept. 1, 1916, and remained there continuously. On April 4, 1917, he was promoted from lieutenant to the rank of flight commander. No details of how Commander Hall came by his death have as yet been received.

An electrolytic model study has been made of the relative productivity of perforated casing. The results show that the relative productivity is roughly one-half to two-thirds of that predicted from point-sink calculations. This discrepancy can he satisfactorily explained on the basis of casing interference. The relative productivity was found to he insensitive to spatial arrangement of the perforations. INTRODUCTION The relative productivity of wells with perforated casing has been treated mathematically by Muskat.' In his treatment the perforations are represented by small spheres, thus enabling him to approximate the flow by that to point sinks. Fig. 1 is a comparison of values calculated from equation (1) with Mus-kat's values. It will be observed that the approximate values are in error by less than 21/2 per cent. The disturbing effect of the casing on the flow line; is not explicitly taken into account by Muskat, but he reasons that interference between the flow pat- terns from the various point sinks will result in a negligible flow in the region within the well radius, and that no appreciable error will result from not explicitly excluding flow from this region. This line of reasoning is open to question, however, as the flow impedance, in the immediate vicinity of the well, of a hemispherical cavity in contact with an opening in the casing is twice that of a spherical sink in a continuous sand layer. There will be a difference, moveover, between the flow into a hemispherical cavity and that into a circular hole in the casing. .This latter difference can best be appreciated by comparing the flow from a semi-infinite medium into a hemispherical cavity at the edge of the medium with the flow out of a circular opening of the same radius as the hemisphere and which is also on the edge of the medium. In this case2 ------= —2, showing that the difference in flow rates into differently shaped cavities is quite appreciable. It was the purpose of the investigation reported here to determine to what extent flow into circular perforations in casing departs from the values calculated by Muskat. For this purpose an electrolytic model was used.

IN recent years the use of high sulphur fuels and charges in steelmaking has necessitated rapid methods of slag control in order to insure the production of high quality steel. Several systems of control have been discussed in the literature, and of these the method described by Philbrook, Jolly, and Henry' has received the most attention recently. In their process the hydrogen ion concentration of an aqueous slag suspension is determined under controlled, but arbitrary conditions. The basicity of the slag may then be derived from a previously established pH-V ratio curve. Thus, by measuring the pH, some indication of the V ratio is gained, from which significant properties of the slag may be deduced. Philbrook et al. made no claims as to the theoretical justification of their treatment, but simply offered it as a rapid means of slag control. Encouraging results caused others to study the method and publish their findings.2-5 Although there was fair agreement on the efficacy of the method, no common parameter was evolved against which pH readings could be plotted. The results of the various determinations were related to such V ratios as CaO/SiO2 and CaO/ SiO2 + P2O5 by some,'-3 while others" plotted against "excess lime." Rivet,' however, found a simple proportionality between the hydrogen ion concentration and the sulphur content of the molten steel beneath the slag. Since slag control in North American practice is largely directed toward the efficient removal of sulphur from steel, Rivet's approach to the problem had the advantage of connecting directly a property of the slag with the impurity being removed. In view of the diversity of parameters used it seemed probable that some fundamental point was being overlooked in seeking a relationship. Examination of the literature revealed that much emphasis had been laid on experimental detail but scant attention paid to the fundamental aspects of the hydrolysis of the aqueous slag suspension. Consequently the present investigation was undertaken with the object of rectifying this deficiency and deriving, if possible, a parameter of general application. Petrographic studies on several matured Canadian open-hearth steel slags have shown that their major constituents are dicalcium and tricalcium silicates set in a complex matrix of iron oxides and ferrites. These phases are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Free lime is frequently encountered in slags, but is not an equilibrium phase since on continued heating it dissolves forming silicates or ferrites. Thus, it appeared that a study of the hydrolysis of the major phases in steel slags would be profitable. The experimental technique used in the present work was a modification of that described by the other workers.'- Electrical conductivity measurements were also made on the suspensions, since Smith et al." had claimed advantages for this method in their paper on slag control. Bedded potash deposits are known only from Phanerozoic evaporite sequences. They are composed of either sylvite or carnallite, of which only the former produces commercial potash ores. Both Permian and Neogene potash deposits have experienced sulfatization by percolating oxygenated surface brines, causing enrichment in the potash content. Permian potash deposits are mined in various parts of Europe and North America, Miocene ones only along the outer rim of the Carpathian Mountains and in Sicily. New discoveries of large Miocene rock salt bodies make it possible to predict the occurrence of potash deposits along their flanks.

Both water pollution and proposed solid waste disposal regulations have a definite effect on the copper leaching industry and some of the major factors affecting the industry are discussed in this paper. New developments of the NPDES are discussed with emphasis on the ‘toxic’ or priority pollutants, and EPA’s philosophy on the control of these pollutants. The protection of groundwater is the prime aim of RCRA through solid/hazardous waste management. Some of the major elements of the RCRA regulations that will effect the copper leaching industry are discussed.

"Comparison of Secondary Fe-Mn Oxides in Fracture Coating and Heavy-Mineral Concentrates as Sampling Media, Silver City Mining Region, New Mexico," a technical paper, appeared in the Aug. 1983 issue of the magazine. In Table 1, page 1182, the correct sequence of the first five metals in column 1 (Elements) should read: Zn, Pb, Cu, Fe, and Mn under "Central District" and Zn, Fe, Pb, Cu, and Mn under "Pinos Altos District." The published table shows the sequences transposed under the opposite districts. All other columns and sequences read correctly.

THE conditions that govern the selection of a suitable type of detachable bit for the small, isolated mine, for rock work and tunnel contracting and for the large mine are quite dissimilar, therefore intelligent recommendation of a particular make of detachable bit must involve consideration of many factors. Small, isolated mines may find advantageous a detachable bit that a larger mine cannot afford to use, because of more efficient conventional steel sharpening and steel-distribution practice, but a small mine may not be able to adopt the practice of large mines because of necessary capital expenditures for equipment for detachable-bit sharpening and shanking. The perfect detachable bit, suitable for all conditions, has not yet been developed. CONVENTIONAL DRILL BIT IN USE That drilling speed increases as the bit gauge decreases is well known, but since small-hole drilling is the exception rather than the rule the rate of such increase is probably not so generally recognized. Tests carried out by Holman Brothers Limited1 with 7/8 -in. steel show that when bit sizes are reduced from I ½ in., I 3/8 in., and I 3/16 in., to I 3/8 in., I ¼ in., and I 1/8 in., respectively, the volume of the hole is 15 per cent less and the drilling speed 49 per cent higher. Recent tests by the United States Bureau of Mines2,3 in hard, uniform basalt showed that a reduction in average gauge from 2.077 to I.826 in., a difference of 0. 2,5I in., gave an increased drilling speed of 65 per cent. The limits to which a drill hole may be extended depend upon the loss in gauge. Since the conventional bit with 5° and I4° clearances did not possess sufficient reaming edge to permit the smaller gauge changes that were required for small-hole drilling, experiments were made in bit construction with a view to correcting this deficiency. This resulted in the adoption of the full reaming cross bit (having full Carr characteristics) by some mines.4 In order to drill holes having a minimum taper from the collar to the bottom of the hole, full reaming center-hole cross bits with 90° cutting angles, 5° and 14° wing tapers, forged on 7/8-in. quarter-octagon drill rods, are used in the conventional drill-steel practice at Hollinger. In the steel shop close attention is given to the condition of the dies and dollies, which, combined with a rigid inspection of the finished bit, ensures as nearly a perfect bit as can be forged economically. Shop practices and costs have been discussed in earlier papers.5.6 The method by which the radii for the special dies used for forging bits of different gauge diameter are obtained so that the points and reaming edges cut circles of the same diameter has been discussed by Hibbert.7 REQUIREMENTS FOR DETACHABLE BIT FOR HOLLINGER Under these circumstances, it was apparent that it would be difficult to introduce a detachable bit that could successfully compete with the conventional bit already in
