Experiments on the Rate of Heat Transfer from a Hot Gas' to a Cooler Metallic Surface Members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers will be much interested in the subject of teat transfer from a hot gas to a cooler metallic surface, and although the book on this subject recently published by the Babcock & Wilcox Co., of New York, deals primarily with boilers, it contains a great deal of information which metallurgical engineers will find of great value. The book starts out with an introduction giving some of the current theories regarding this subject; it then describes in detail the experimental apparatus used, and the methods of conducting the experiment's and recording the data. Then follow some account of the determination of radiation losses in jackets and cooler; measurement of metal temperatures; detection and correction of errors; etc., concluding with a discussion of the results and derivation of corrective formula for heat absorption; heat pressure rate and specific heat of gas.

THERE are two general classes of problems in connection with electric furnaces. First, those relating to the best utilization of the electrical power inside the furnace; second, those connected with the bringing of the electrical power to the point where it is to be utilized. Referring particularly to the latter class of problems, many calculations have been made, covering a wide variety of furnaces, to check the electrical capacity and power factor found from test. The following analysis, made for the purpose of determining the maximum capacity and approximate performance of a new furnace, to operate at 160 volts on a 60-cycle circuit, may be of interest. The first characteristic necessary to determine is the inductance, since this is the factor that limits the amount of power which can be put into the furnace. THE title of this article is descriptive, but not complete, for psychological evaluation is almost as important as rigid economic evaluation. This refers to those human traits that cause people to be too optimistic about the projects they are sponsoring, to overlook obvious weaknesses, to base decisions on incomplete and inaccurate data, and to gloss over embarrassing problems. Investment of capital in a new industrial mineral project is warranted only after rigorous economic analyses based on unquestionable facts. A plunge into production cannot be justified solely because these minerals have been deposited in the ground and are therefore free. There are no specially favorable economic laws that make the business of industrial minerals more attractive than any other. The factors of supply and demand, marketing, technological changes, taxes, competition, and fluctuating prices apply as much to industrial minerals as to other business enterprises. What is more, industrial minerals are subject to the higher risks that all mining enterprises face.

Like many other similar plants the ore-washer of the Longdale Iron Company has been a growth of years. In its principal features there is probably nothing new, as the type is that of the well-known " log-washer." Some of its minor details may, however, be of interest to those members who have to deal with the washing of large quantities of brown iron-ores, the principal gangue of which is clay. * Until 1883, the ore at Longdale, being of unusual purity, needed no washing, and was charged to the furnaces as it came from the mines—both lump and fine—the only attempt at cleaning being the' picking over a screen of 1½-inch iron bars, 3½ inches from center to center, set in the top of the bins through which the cars for the furnaces were loaded." In this paper the imminent relationship between rock burst and its phenomenon with normal rock pressure and its appearance, as well as the factors of one changing into another have been analyzed. Based on this, the necessary and sufficient appearing factors of rock bursts have been put forward, and the term ''burst pressure" has been defined. According to the statistics data of tremendous rock bursts which appear in collieries in Hunan Province, the features of high frequency, great strength and shallow depth of the beginning burst have been found. There are some special structures in the coal seams, which are closely related with the burst phenomenon. A hypothesis of "star structure" has been suggested for the appearing mechanism of bursts. Inside and around this star structure the distribution rule of burst pressure and rock strength has been researched depending upon the theory of the limited stress field. A new description of the appearing causes of bursts has been raised.

The process is better than I dared to hope, and we are able to place at the command of chemists and engineers interested in the matter an apparatus of continuous and uninterrupted action, and methods of analysis by which the daily averages of the two variable and inconstant factors of illuminating gas, ammonia and sulphur, may be determined with all needful accuracy, even by those little skilled in chemical manipulation, and with very little loss of time. The Lorraine deposit of minette iron ore has been mined for more than a century. During this time, the economic conditions have changed frequently, and especially during the past decade. Thus, it has become economically prudent to proceed to new iron ore reserves with consideration of many and varied parameters. In the past, only traditional mining parameters were considered. Today, the quantity of information that must be taken into account is of such magnitude that the only practical means of data processing is by use of a digital computer and a mathematical model. One such model, based on geostatistics, was developed by G. Matheron. Much of the required input information, such as the petrology of ores, has been generated through IRSID investigations. This paper deals with several aspects of data processing in mining including information recording, reserves calculation, and stages of shrinking data in the calculation of mining iron beds, variograms, kriging, and tonnages.

IN conjunction with a geological investigation of the silver-bearing veins at Contact Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada, a survey was made with a Geiger-Müller counter of the gamma-ray emissions from the rocks in the vicinity of the mine workings. Discontinuous pitchblende veins have been encountered occasionally in the silver-bearing fissures, and the geophysical survey was undertaken with the hope that abnormally high gamma-ray intensities, if detected, might lead to larger and more continuous pitchblende discoveries. Before the instrument was used at. Contact Lake, preliminary tests were made, first with laboratory specimens at Princeton University, and later over known pitchblende deposits at the Eldorado property, LaBine Point, N.W.T. The Geiger-Müller counter, as adapted for field use, is described; the technique of transporting and operating the instrument is outlined; and the general precautions to be observed are discussed. The results obtained at Great Bear Lake show that the instrument is capable of detecting not only a pitchblende ore shoot in a shear zone, but also the mildly radioactive "host rock" at a considerable distance from the ore body. Hence, use of the Geiger-Müller counter is urged, not just for the detailed search for an ore body in a shear zone, but for the detection of possible radioactive "host rocks" in large-scale reconnaissance surveys of unexplored regions made by prospectors and members of federal geological survey parties.

THE possibility of using reflected X-rays to produce images of crystals was explored by Barrettl who developed simple experimental procedures for X-ray microscopy and who showed by numerous examples the great range of information that could be made available. In his method characteris radiation is used to produce an image of a limited area of the sample on fine-grained film, this image subsequently being enlarged approximately X100. A somewhat different method will be described here;' white radiation from a fine-focus X-ray tube-"' is used to produce an image of a relatively large area of a single-crystal surface. part of the sample; therefore, white radiation is needed. Numerical modeling of ground water flow systems can be used to help analyze many practical problems encountered in the mining industry. Numerical models can be used to predict ground-water seepage rates into surface mines, shafts, and other large excavations; to predict water-level changes under adjacent properties; and to predict the effectiveness of various deep-well dewatering schemes. As with any model, the results from a numerical model are limited by the quality and quantity of data, and by the restrictions of any simplifying assumptions. A case study is presented that shows how a numerical model was used for engineering purposes to help analyze the hydrologic impact of a proposed open-pit mine by Predicting changes in the dewatering rate caused by the lateral growth and deepening of the mine and by predicting the effectiveness of various deep-well dewatering schemes.

Cold working of iron-carbon alloys was found to increase greatly the hydrogen solubility and to decrease the diffusivity at temperatures up to 400° C. These effects are increasing functions of both the carbon content and the degree of deformation. The hydrogen behavior is consistent with the idea that cotd working creates "traps", which are concluded to be microcracks in which the hydrogen is chemisorbed. Hydrogen embrittlement is explained by the Petch theory of metal crack surface energy loss due to hydrogen adsorption. HYDROGEN embrittlement of steel has been studied for many years and has been the subject of an extensive literature, but the mechanism of the effect has not been completely understood. The embrittlement is unusual in that the ductility loss is not accompanied by an increase of the yield strength, being primarily a decrease of the fracture strength alone. The loss of fracture strength is usually most severe in the temperature range between 0°and 100°C. Here the solubility of hydrogen in the iron lattice at ordinary H2 pressures is extremely low while the diffusivity is still quite high. From the relationships between the ductility and the hydrogen content, test temperature and strain rate, it is apparent that the hydrogen atoms causing the ductility loss difbse to and concentrate in small regions of the metal which are especially susceptible to the initiation and propagation of fracture. This hydrogen segregation apparently occurs after plastic straining has begun. Below 0°C the ductility loss persists only at low strain rates in confirmation of the view that the embrittlement is diffusion .controlled. The tendency of the embrittlement to disappear above 100°C can be explained by the increasing lattice solubility of hydrogen with rising temperature. A common view of hydrogen embrittlement of steel is that the hydrogen initially dissolved in the metal lattice diffuses to structural discontinuities and there precipitates as H2 gas at very high pressures which assist the external stress in causing premature failure.1,2 The idea of a high H2 pressure in equilibrium with ordinary amounts of hydrogen in steel at room temperature is due to observations of hydrogen behavior in fully annealed material, for which the Sieverts' law constant relating solute concentration to H2 pressure is extremely small. Hydrogen-embrittled steel, however, is always plastically deformed to some extent, and therefore it is important that hydrogen embrittlement be explained primarily in terms of hydrogen behavior in plastically deformed material. Such an explanation is attempted in this paper. Previous studies of hydrogen in cold-worked steel have shown that both the solubility and the diffusion rate are significantly chaned when the steel is cold worked. Darken and Smith discovered that the amount of hydrogen absorbed from acid by cold-rolled steel at 35°C is many times greater than that absorbed by hot-rolled steel. They found also that the hydrogen permeability of the steel is unaffected by cold working. Keeler and Davis4 confirmed the high apparent solubility of hydrogen in cold-worked iron-carbon alloys at temperatures up to and even beyond the recrystallization temperature. They also found that this solubility increase accompanying cold work is a sensitive function of the carbon content, being absent when no carbon is present. The present experimental study was undertaken primarily to obtain an improved understanding of the behavior of hydrogen in cold-worked steel. Data were obtained on the effects of temperature, H, pressure, carbon content, and degree of cold work on the hydrogen solubility and diffusivity in iron-carbon alloys. These data have been helpful in elucidating the nature of the cold-worked steel structure as well as in providing information on the mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement of steel. EXPERIMENTAL Cylindrical specimens for hydrogen absorption and diffusion rate measurements were prepared from three iron-carbon binary alloys and a commercial SAE 1010 steel. The iron-carbon alloys were prepared by vacuum melting electrolytic iron with graphite in a magnesia crucible. The alloys were cast in vacuum as 2 1/2-in. sq ingots weighing about 20 lb each. The ingots were hot rolled (above 1900°F) to 5/8-in.-diam round bars and then cooled in air to room temperature. The resulting metallographic structure consisted of islands of fine pearlite surrounded by free ferrite. Chemical analyses of the materials are given in Table I. The 5/8-in. diam bars were turned to diameters such that cold reduction to the desired final specimen diameters would result in either 30 or 60 pct reduction in area (RA). Leaching or solution mining, a relatively simple and economical process for beneficiating metallic ores, is likely to find increasing application in the treatment of low-grade ores that are impractical to mine by any other means. This process may be carried out in two different ways: 1) dump leaching, where the ore is moved from its original location to be leached at another site; and 2) In-situ leaching, where the ore is leached in place by introducing the leach solution at the top, letting it flow down through the ore under gravity, and then recovering it plus the dissolved metals it contains. Whichever leaching method is used, it is almost always necessary to break up the ore before leaching. In this paper a study is reported which indicates that rock broken by an explosion-in particular, an underground nuclear explosion-is significantly more amenable to leaching then is rock broken by other methods. These results suggest that the leaching speed and efficiency could be increased by nuclear fracturing of the ore. Not only would the leach time be shortened, but the resulting increase in strength or richness of the solutions would decrease plant installation expense as well as reduce pumping and processing costs. A considerable fund of experience has been accumulated in the course of several hundred experimental underground nuclear explosions, so that the gross results of any given nuclear explosion can now be predicted with a fair degree of confidence.' From this knowledge it seems clear that, under the proper conditions, large ore bodies can be fractured much more economically-macroscopically speaking-by nuclear explosions than by other methods. The present study concentrates on smaller scale effects that is, the cracks in the chunks of rock broken by the explosion-and shows that here too, in the microscopic domain, there are important advantages to nuclear fracturing. The intense shock produced by the very fast acting, high-brisance nuclear explosive fractures the rock in a way that should significantly improve its leachability. Experimental Procedure This study compared rocks broken by nuclear explosives with rocks produced by conventional mining, quarrying, or core drilling. The test samples, granite chunks 6 to 8 in. on a side, plus core sections, came from the area of the Hardhat*2 nuclear explosion and were taken both before and after the explosion. For comparison, several samples of quarried granite were obtained from a local gravestone monument company. The general procedure was to soak the test samples in leaching solution and then determine the extent of penetration. A standard commercial copper leaching solution was used (10 gpl Cu, 10 gpl H2SO4, 5 gpl ferric Fe, 15 gpl total Fe, pH about 1.5), to which a water-soluble penetrant dye, Zyglo 1-c, had been added. Details of the procedure were as follows: 1) Sample leached in solution containing Zyglo penetrant dye. 2) Washed with water. 3) Air-dried. 4) Cut with granite wire saw. 5) One face polished with granite monument polish. 6) Sent directly to be photographed, or heated at 110°C for 2 hr and then sent to be photographed. 7) Photographed under ultraviolet light to show crack patterns. Results After 10 days of leaching at 70-75°F, the samples were removed from the solution, washed, dried, and cut in half with a granite wire saw to study the penetration of the leach solution. Since the Zyglo dye in the leach is visible under ultraviolet light, the degree of penetration of the leach (and hence the cracks in the samples) can be studied on photographs of the crosscut samples made under ultraviolet light. The photos in [Fig. 1] show how the leach solution penetrated various representative samples. Of the 71 rock samples examined, fractures were most frequent and prominent in samples from the rubble produced by the nuclear explosion [(Fig. 1D)]. Fracturing was less apparent in shaft-mined rock [(Fig. 1B)], still less evident in drift-mined rock [(Fig. 1C)], and practically nonexistent in cored or quarried specimens [(Fig. 1A)]. The samples in [Fig. lA-C] were from the same general area as the nuclear explosion, but they were obtained before the explosion. Results of the crack studies are summarized in [Table 1]. The Zyglo-treated leach solution penetrated the test samples at the rate of about 1/2 mm during the first hour, 1 mm by the end of 4 hr, 2 to 3 mm in 12 hr, and 4 to 6 mm in 10 days, showing a progressively slower rate with time.

The plummet lamp, to which I called the attention of the Institute, at the Bethlehem meeting, in August, 1871, with the improvement of the compensating ring, suggested by Mr. Heller, having come into general use for mine surveying in this country, and my attention having been called to the fact that it could not be employed in mines in which there was danger of meeting with fire-damp, I have so modified it that it can be used in all cases with safety. Mining engineers, who are in active practice in those districts where fire-damp is met with in the mines (and I am sorry to say it is becoming much more common in the anthracite regions), know how dangerous their work is when they are called upon to survey such mines, particularly when they are obliged to run lines in those parts of a mine which have been unworked, since by opening of doors, brattice, etc., to get the sights, they are liable to disarrange the currents of air, and cause any fire-damp that may have accumulated in the old workings to find its way into the levels, etc., where the party is at work. It is, therefore, very dangerous to leave an open light (such as the original form of plummet lamp) in an old breast or gangway, even when the safety lamp has shown that no fire-damp is present, for the opening of the doors, etc., may drive the fire-damp to the light, and thus endanger the lives of the engineers. The improved form of plummet lamp, now shown to you, can be used either with or without the safety apparatus. Upon the top of the plumb-bob portion of the old lamp a screw is cut, upon which a ring A is screwed. (See Plate 11.) On the external cylindrical part of this ring two small conical holes are drilled, 180' apart. The compensating ring, by which the plumb-bob part of the lamp is suspended, passes over the ring A, and is fastened to it by two small screws having conical points, which fit into the conical holes in the ring A. The safety apparatus resembles, to a certain extent, that of the Mueseler lamp. It consists of a ring B and plate C, which are united by four rods. The plate C has a cylindrical hole in the middle, and four apertures distributed radially around it. Invasion experiments were run on Berea sandstone cores to get laboratory measurements of resistivity and saturation profiles characteristic of water and oil sands invaded by mud filtrate. Injection rates were as low as 1.13 cm/D, and the cores were 30 to 36 in. long, cut parallel to the bedding planes. In the water-sand case, the resistivity profiles revealed the existence of an extensive transition zone between flushed and uncontaminated zones. In the linear geometry of the experiment, the width of the transition zone increased as the square root of the injected fluid volume. For the oil-sand case the core was prepared by displacing the formation water with kerosene to minimum water saturation. During the subsequent invasion experiment. oil saturation was measured directly by means of an oil-soluble radioactive tracer, and resistivity profiles along the core were taken at the same time. These data were interpreted in terms of an oil-water front, followed by a formation water bank, a zone of mixed waters, and finally, invaded mud filtrate near the borehole. Micro-fingering and capillarity seemed to affect considerably the resistivity profiles observed in the invaded oil-sand experiment. Beyond the regular conductive annulus or "low zone", it was found that a resistive "anti-annulus" could also be formed. As a result of these experiments, some simplified invasion profiles have been accepted and are being used in Grand Slam* interpretations. INTRODUCTION The importance of the mud filtrate-invaded zone in interpreting electrical logs has long been recognized.',* In trying to account for its effect, only very simple models of the resistivity profiles in the radial direction from the borehole have been used. In fact, most log interpretation charts have been based on resistivity models consisiting of two media of uniform resistivity (R, and R,) abruptly separated at the diameter of invasion. Such a clean separation of the media of different resistivities seems unrealistic, since flushing may not be perfect and may vary with radial distance into the formation.3** The nature of the transition zone, when it is within the radius of investigation of the surveying devices, may affect the log readings. Campbell and Martin' verified that a conductive annulus containing a high percentage of formation water may be formed when mud filtrate invades an oil-bearing sand. Interpretations which are to include the effect of such an annulus require the addition to the model of a conductive zone located at the outer rim of the invaded zone.' Using the Buckley-Leverett relations,6 aturation profiles may be derived, from which resistivity profiles can be calculated. Results of such computations by K. S. Kunz and J. H. Moran were given in a paper by Dumanoir. Tixier and Martin,7 and led to the construction of log interpretation charts which were based on a representation with three media of resistivities R, R0 and R1. Fig. 1 shows a schematic representation of a resistivity profile which includes an annulus. Campbell and Martin realized that, during the invasion of an oil sand, both capillarity and mixing would contribute to rounding of the profile shown in Fig. 1. The Missouri fire clays are here divided into plastic and semiplastic clays occurring as widespread bedded deposits in east central Missouri and flint and diaspore clays occurring as isolated "sink-hole" deposits in the north central Ozark region. Visual inspection was the first method used in clay prospecting. Thin overburden, hard sandstone "rimrocks," and the occurrence of diaspore float made this method particularly applicable in the flint and diaspore fields. The first drilling tool used was a hand auger. One man can drill 25 to 50 ft. per day at a cost of about 35 cents per foot. Holes can be drilled to a depth of 150 feet. Spud drills are often used where the overburden is hard. This drill uses a slotted earth socket bit. A two-man crew can drill about 100 ft. per day at a cost of about 35 cents per foot. Mechanically powered auger drills have been used extensively in wildcat drilling in the past few years. This type of drill furnishes a continuous set of cuttings. The practical depth limit with this drill is 50 to 60 ft. Two men can drill 300 ft. per day at a cost of about 20 cents per foot. Core drilling is used mainly to prove a known 'lay deposit. A A crew with a No. 22 Sullivan drill can drill about 30 to 40 ft. per day in soft clay, at a cost of about $1.25 per foot. Introduction Because of the geological variations in the Occurrence of the several types of fire clay mined in Missouri, it is necessary, when discussing the prospecting methods used for discovering and proving these clays, to divide these operations into two classes, one including plastic and semi-plastic fire clays, the other flint and diaspore clays. The plastic and semiplastic fire clays in the east central and St. Louis districts are generally classified as Cheltenham clays. This formation is a more or less continuous deposit and is found Over a large area in east central Missouri. There are variations, however, in the quality and thickness of the clay, which necessitate detailed prospecting in order to determine deposits of economic value. The nature of the overburden (Fig. 1), which consists of Pennsylvanian limestone and shale beds of varying thicknesses, and a mantle of glacial drift, regu1ates the methods and equipment used in prospecting for these clays. The district in which these clays occur is a gently rolling upland region, characteristic of most of northern Missouri. Along the southern fringe of this area there are numerous deposits of flint clay lying as masses or lenses in depressions at the base of the continuous and widespread Cheltenham formation, or as outlying "sink-hole" deposits in the area marginal to that formation. South of the Missouri River in the north central Ozark region, there are high-grade flint and high-alumina clays, commonly referred to as burley and diaspore clays in sink-hole type deposits. The nature of the overburden (Fig. 1), which consists of Pennsylvanian limestone and shale beds of varying thicknesses, and a mantle of glacial drift, regu1ates the methods and equipment used in prospecting for these clays. The district in which these clays occur is a gently rolling upland region, characteristic of most of northern Missouri. Along the southern fringe of this area there are numerous deposits of flint clay lying as masses or lenses in depressions at the base of the continuous and widespread Cheltenham formation, or as outlying "sink-hole" deposits in the area marginal to that formation. South of the Missouri River in the north central Ozark region, there are high-grade flint and high-alumina clays, commonly referred to as burley and diaspore clays in sink-hole type deposits. AN electronic data-processing system is described which permits rapid, accurate, low-cost processing of strain-dependent damping data utilizing equipment normally available within the service facilities of most large laboratories. On analyzing the record of a stress-dependent damping test, the operator usually measures the double amplitudes at several points on the decay curve. The logarithmic decrement is then calculated for decay between consecutive amplitudes. These values of 6 are plotted against the corresponding maximum surface shear stress, T, which is proportional to the average of the two amplitudes between which is calculated: where d is the specimen diameter. The period of the vibration is not necessarily constant during decay; thus, each cycle must be counted. A decay curve may extend to, perhaps, 1000 cycles, and at least two curves are always obtained for each specimen or set of conditions. It can, therefore, be seen that manual analysis of decay curves is both tedious and costly in terms of man-hours. Prospecting methods used in Tennessee have gradually improved with the years, as required by depletion of the easily accessible and shallow deposits and the universal trend toward mechanization, and as necessitated by exploring deeper beds, often occurring under limestone and flinty overburden. In the early days it was a very simple matter to dig pits by hand, using a plentiful supply of local farm labor to expose relatively shallow deposits of "brown rock" under shallow clayey overburden that would stand up without timbering. Visual inspection of the exposed phosphate and expert judgment of the "grade" analysis, aided by a "biting" test to reveal presence of unwanted silica, furnished most of the information required. All this might be helped by a few samples sent to the local chemist† who supplemented his income by judicious trading or tanning a few bear skins. The extra curricula activities did not affect the accuracy of the analysis which hold up even under present day standards. Some shot and core drilling was done in Hickman County, mostly for the limestone-like blue Phosphate deposits. The next step was the use of a 4-in. posthole auger, hand operated as described by Guenther, followed by a completely mechanized rig, as described by Pickard. Both these methods are practically adapted to the prospecting of the relatively soft brown rock deposits at moderate depths of clay overburden. For prospecting in areas of deeper overburden, such as are often found in Hickman County, up to 150 or even 200-ft depths, a modified core-drilling method is described by Guenther. Johnston describes a special diamond-drilling technique, developed by TVA, to penetrate flint horizons, which was adopted by the International Minerals in chemical corporation to prospect in Hickman County where deposits had previously been prospected at considerable expense and with difficulty, by small, temporary, hand-dug shafts.
