Diffiusion of magnesium into the surface of LiF crystals to controlled depths and subsequent heat treatments provided a wide range of surface zone harahesses and structure, The bend strength of the LiF crystals was increased by as much as an or-dev of magnitude. Ductility was achieved when dislocation generation occurred in the diffusion zone or when dislocations penetrated to the surface from the intevior. A critical surface hardness of 130 to 140 kg per sq mm was found helozu which generation could take place in the diffusion zone and ahoue which the zone was impenetrable, This hardness was obtainable by several methods, among them the aging of quenched MgF2 -LiF solutions to produce MgF, precipitation. Maximum hardness was ohtained in quenched specimens with no visihle evidence of MgF,. Diffusion-zone formation followed a parabolic rate law and an activation energy of 20.9 kcal per mole was obtained for the process. RECENTLY, the properties of ionic crystals as related to surface condition have been receiving much attention, specifically the transitions between ductile and brittle behavior. Originally Joffe 1 showed that NaCl crystals could be made ductile by immersion in water and related this to the elimination of surface microcracks. Aerts and DeKeyser 2 and Gorur 3' have subsequently shown that ionic crystals are inherently ductile and are embrittled through contact with air. Machlin and Murray4 hypothesized that a layer of NaCIO3 produced by contact of ozone with NaCl induced embrittlement by acting as a barrier to outward dislocation flow. westwood,' Rosenberg and Cadoff,9 and Bilello and cadoff' have reported surface strengthening of LiF crystals by coating with a magnesium compound and then heat treating for adherence. The major effect of the coat was to inhibit dislocation-slip lines from reaching the specimen surface. westwoods showed microcrack formation and fracture to be caused by slip-band interactions at the surface. The material presented in this paper is an extension of the work reported earlier by Bilello, Rosenberg, and cadoff'6,7 and illustrates the wide range of surface properties and bulk behavior obtainable by use of heat-treated magnesium-diffused surface regions in LiF crystals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The LiF single crystals were obtained from the Harshaw Chemical Co. Some batch to batch variation was observed; therefore all specimens for a given test series were cleaved from the same crystal. The typical dimension used was 1 by 0.1 by 0.40 in. Surface damage resulting from cleavage was removed by chemically polishing in a 2 pct NH4OH solution. Each group of specimens was given a vacuum anneal at 700°C for 4 hr to provide a base standard for measuring comparative effects of various surface treatments. To produce the reacted surface zone, the annealed specimens were immersed in a boiling suspension of MgF, in doubly distilled HzO, agitated slbwly for 30 sec, removed, and dried at room temperature. Uniform coatings of MgF, were deposited with a thickness of approximately 5 mils. It should be noted that this technique can be modified for use with crystals which are soluble in water by using boiling absolute alcohol as the dissolving medium. This was found effective for the coating of NaCl with MgF2. The diffused surface zone was obtained by annealing the coated samples at elevated temperatures in a vacuum of lob4 mm Hg. Penetration depth was controlled by varying the annealing time from 1/2 to 28 hr. After heat treatment, the samples were tested for bend strength and hardness. Load was applied by four-point bending in a hard-beam testing jig. Four-point rather than three-point bending was used to provide a wide area of constant stress and to minimize the effect of localized inhomogenities in the specimen. The deflection rate was 8 x min-' and the distance between knife edges was 1/4 in. Load-time curves were obtained from a chart recorder coupled to the machine and converted to resolved shear stress on the shear plane vs deflection, as plotted in the figures. The unstressed portions of the sample outside of the two outer knife edges were used for the microhardness studies. IT is unnecessary to review much of the literature on hydrogen embrittlement of steel since several excellent reviews and bibliographies exist.1-3 Hot acid pickling and cathodic charging have been known to cause hydrogen embrittlement of steel and have been used as laboratory methods to charge steels with hydrogen.4-8 Experimental Procedure The problem of prime concern in all instances, except in the work of Sims and coworkers,10 is that at no time was there a definite known hydrogen value reported which could be related to a particular value of the degree of embrittlement. It was the purpose of this research to determine the relationship between hydrogen content and degree of em-brittlement quantitatively. The 1020 stock used for the specimens was hot-rolled 7/16 in. diam rod of the following analysis: 0.19 pct C, 0.40 pct Mn, 0.012 pct P, 0.036 pct S' Vacuum-fusion analyses for nitrogen and oxygen gave 0.014 pct O2 and 0.0011 pct N2. Cathodic charging was used to cause embrittle-ment. The advantages of this method were that no quenching was necessary, the impregnation was reasonably controllable, and representative samples for analysis could be prepared simultaneously with the charging of the tensile bars. Analyses for hydrogen were made in a vacuum-fusion type of apparatus which extracted gas from the samples by fusion in a molten tin-iron bath' This apparatus, which has recently been described in detail elsewhere, will not be discussed here.". " Consecutive samples can be analyzed every 15 min with an accuracy of 0'03 ppm. A A from an electrolytic or pickling bath can be charged for analysis in about 3 min, and analysis completed in 15 min. Samples of as-received 1020 stock were analyzed and found to contain a negligible amount of hydrogen (0.06 ppm). Preliminary pickling and electrolytic charging gave highly variable results. Cold-worked samples showed higher values but ranged from 0.6 to 6.0 ppm of hydrogen. Charging at 90°C gave higher values of charged hydrogen, but troublesome films on many of the specimens resulted. It was not until a few drops of a catalytic poison, prepared from 2 g of yellow phosphorus dissolved in 40 ml of carbon disulphide,8 was added to the electrolytic cell that fairly consistent high values of hydrogen could be charged into the as-received 1020 steel at room temperature. The cell used is sketched in fig. 1. The anode and fixture for the tensile specimens were fastened to the cell cover as shown, and the specimen was screwed in place, centrally located with respect to the anode. At first, anodes of lead and graphite were tried, but they contaminated the electrolyte and gave a slight deposit on the specimen. Later, a platinum wire was used in the form of a uniform helix. A current of 2 amp, corresponding to about 0.5 amp per sq in. of cathode, was used for most specimens. The electrolyte was 4 pct H2SO4 solution. Fig. 1 shows the form of the special tensile bar, the main portion of which was an ordinary 1/4 in. diam, 1 in. gauge length test bar, except that two to four small cylinders of stock were left attached by small links to the bottom end of the tensile bar for the purpose of providing samples for hydrogen analysis. Thus the bars and samples were charged with hydrogen simultaneously and an analysis could be made while the bar was being tested mechanically. Experiments were performed to determine how representative the test cylinders were of the middle of the test bar proper. While the bar center was being analyzed, the small cylinder was stored in dry ice, since it had been shown that such storage prevents loss of hydrogen for many hours.12 The results of these checks are shown in table 1. The checks are very good (0.3 ppm) and indicate that it is permissible to use the small end cylinders to establish the hydrogen content of the tensile test bar proper-

The comparison of actual energy of comminution with theoretical surface energy presents a wide gap. On the other hand, Solid State Theory presents a viewpoint that places actual energy of breakage in understandable relationship with the theoretical strength of materials. Therefore the physical background of comminution theory favors Kick's Law. A11 discussions of comminution theory appear farfetched when comparison is made of the actual energy of crushing with the energy input called for by thermodynamic theory. Quoting Taggart:' "The work required to crush halite was of the general order of 0.10 kg cm per sq cm of new surface produced (based on air percolation) whereas the theoretical energy of this new surface, based on thermodynamic calculation by a number of investigators is 1 x 10'4 kg cm per sq cm or the work expended was 1000 times the new surface energy — an indicated crushing efficiency of 0.10 pct." It is frustrating to probe into comminution theory with the prospect that the energy one is measuring is 99.9 pct waste energy. Do the laws of comminution deal with energy consumed by mineral breakage or with waste heat energy? There seems to be something wrong. Solid State Theory may provide the answer. The following statement is particularly apt to the situation: "The fundamental fact about metals and indeed all materials, is that they are much weaker than they should be. By this, we mean that if the stress required to cause a given plane of atoms to slip past a neighboring plane is calculated from basic atomic and Solid State Theory, the resulting number is some 1000 times too large to be accounted for by errors in approximations or assumptions. We know now that this is due to dislocations, and we even have a fair understanding of the details of the process by which dislocations make a crystal weak. An intriguing possibility which suggests itself, results from the discovery of very minute metallic crystals which are apparently free of dislocations and which have a strength approaching the ideal value for a perfect crystal." Here we have an extraordinary reversal of the situation. The actual energy for breakage is only one-thousandth the theoretical instead of 1000 times as given by Taggart. But the theoretical energy presented by Solid State Theory is the binding energy between atoms (or ions) in a crystal lattice. This is the kind of energy envisaged by Kick's law. The surface energy or the other hand corresponds to Rittinger's law. Comparison of theoretical with actual, on the basis of surface or on the basis of Rittinger's law, seems to present an absurdity; yet Rittinger's law is confirmed by an impressive array of experimental evidence. Comparison of theoretical and actual on the basis of Solid State Theory or, in other words, on the basis of Kick's law seems reasonable; yet there is not a scrap of evidence to verify Kick's law. The situation appears paradoxical, but the developments in the next section of this paper show that the paradox is a hint to a strange turn of events. ENERGY-WEIGHT FRACTION FUNCTION charles3 has presented a final equation showing the relation of energy consumed in comminution to size of product n{-1) a-n + 1 E is energy, C is proportionality constant, a and n are constants and k is the coarsest size in the ground product (size modulus). In the course of study of a large amount of experimental evidence, Charles discovered that in the general case, a-n + 1 approximated zero. For some reason, a and n differed only by unity. But if a—n + 1 = 0 within experimental error, then it is obvious that Eq. 1 states that it requires an infinite amount of energy to grind any sample to any size. This is a case where nature gives an absurd answer to a man-made mathematical equation, hence something is wrong with the equation. An adjustment must be made to fit the equation with experience. Approximate solutions are presented for the heat-flow equations in a loss-free linear system with a moving source and with heat transfer by convection and conduction, representing in situ combustion in an oil reservoir. The rate of heat generation and the velocity vf of the source (flame front) are assumed constant. A cold front or convection front caused by the cooling effect of in-jected air develops behind the flame front and moves with velocity vc, which is determined by the thermal properties of the air and rock. Because of thermal conduction the fronts are not sharp; i.e., they do not represent temperature discontinuities. The following solutions apply after a sufficiently long time. where Q is heat generated per unit volume of formation, k is thermal conductivity, CF is volumetric heat capacity, a is thermal diffusivity, and subscripts 1 and 2 refer to values behind and ahead of the flame front, respectively. The parameter CF2 is contained in v . Te is initial reservoir temper- . C2 e ature and air-injection temperature. Other mathematically possible solutions are presented. The different solutions result from the use of different values for various physical parameters. The solution just presented is thought to be most commonly applicable. INTRODUCTION In this paper, approximate analytical expressions are derived for the temperature profile developed in the underground combustion method of oil recovery. A qualitative description of the process may be found in a paper by Tadema.1 The flame front is regarded as a moving source with a constant rate of heat generation. Heat transfer is by conduction and convection. Previous publications, of which a few are cited here, 2-5 have also attacked this problem and have presented solutions pertaining to different methods of approximating or idealizing the process studied. The present paper also treats an idealized case: linear flow is assumed for heat and fluids, and vaporization and condensation effects are neglected. The results obtained are similar to those derived by Bailey and Larkin,3 but are obtained by an entirely different procedure. The method used here should give considerably greater insight into the physics of the in situ combustion process. Four types of cases are considered, distinguished by thermal and fluid-flow properties of the system. A constant rate of heat generation and constant rate of flame-front advance are assumed. Flame-front temperature is determined for each case using a heat balance which involves the entire temperature profile. The applicability of the different solutions to real systems is discussed after they are all presented. Again, this is done for the purpose of understanding better the physics of the process. Consideration of the nonapplicable solutions and of the reasons for their not applying is significant. In a paper by Cooperman,4 the only case solved is one considered here as not applicable. Fluid flow, as such (pressures, saturations, oil recovery, etc.), is not treated. This subject has been covered in a paper by Wilson, et al.6 Also, we are not concerned with requirements for continuance of the process; we only attempt to determine the temperature history for cases where the process has continued for some time. THE existence of v phase in the Mn-Mo system was discovered in this laboratory several years ago,' but neither the conditions of its formation nor its composition were known, and preliminary attempts to reproduce the phase were unsuccessful. We wish now to specify the information appropriate to phase formation on the basis of experiments performed since that time. The starting materials were in every case electrolytic manganese and high purity molybdenum. Two methods of preparation were employed: l—arc-melting varying combinations of the elements in an inert atmosphere and subsequent heat treating, and 2—sintering compressed mixtures of finely divided powders of the elements. In the latter method, the powders were first passed through 200 mesh screen and then compressed into cylinders of % in. diameter and % in. length, which were sintered at elevated temperatures in an atmosphere of dry hydrogen. For some samples, the sintering temperature was 1200°C (for 1 hr), and these were then heat- treated at lower temperatures for times up to 24 hr. Eventually it was found, for the proper composition, that essentially pure a phase could be produced by sintering at 1125°C for 3 hr. Quenching to room temperature was effected by means of a stream of cold, dry hydrogen in a water-cooled chamber. The arc-melting procedure was found to be unsatisfactory after an investigation of many samples at different compositions and temperatures. Large quantities of manganese were vaporized during melting and none of the products were homogeneous or contained extended regions of pure phase. Nonetheless, these experiments established that no formation occurs in the Mn-Mo system below 1115oC, and indicated, at least roughly, the composition range of interest for further exploration. The more definite results obtained from samples produced by the second method are given in Table I. A portion of sample 2 heated for 16 hr at 1000°C in a Vycor tube transformed to molybdenum plus unidentified phases of complex X-ray pattern. From these few results it appears that the region of phase is quite narrow in composition. It is of interest that the composition is such as to make for difficulties in correlating this structure on an electron atom basis with other a structures of iron, cobalt, and nickel. In that respect Mn-Mo shows the same anomaly as Mn-Cr and Mn-V systems.' A second feature is that in common with the two other known molybdenum (Fe-Mo and Co-Mo), Mn-Mo v exists only at elevated temperatures. The X-ray powder pattern of the pure a phase of Mn-Mo is given in Table 11. It agrees well with the patterns established for other structures, especially with that for Fe-Mo as given by Goldschmidt.An attempt is being made to establish whether an ordering of the respective atoms occurs and such information will be reported in a future publication. LOCKE, Cambridge, Mass.-In this country, we have come to think that we should use smaller size of feed in our ball-mills. I will admit that a ball-mill is not comparable to a tube-mill, as conditions may not be the same, but there we have an unusual demonstration of the advantage of a coarser feed. Further investigation along this line is going to lead to some valuable results. The authors have overcome the difficulty of this coarse feed by taking out what I would call the difficult lumps, It is not clear from the paper whether many of these difficult lumps' may not be 'reduced portions of their grinding media. H. W. HARDINGE, New York, N. Y.-The idea is not exactly new because in 1911 they used the miner to reduce the finer material. We proceeded three or four years using many tons, about 15 tons. or nearly the same proportion of ore to grinding medium. Another thing to be taken into account is the hardness of the ore being ground. In South Africa, the transportation costs must be, taken into account. They are also making progress in the method of using tube-mills and ball-mills instead of stamps. Experiments are to be conducted with 10-ft. diameter mills there, with the object of increasing the mass action and agitation which, as has been demonstrated under different circumstances, increases the overall efficiency.

A university is a place to build minds and develop leaders. It provides the tools necessary for the development of new ideas which come from the inquisitive mind and is one of the stepping stones to management responsibilities for the truly ambitious. However, it is not always a financially sound investment! Lately, there have been several articles published on the economic advantages of a college education. These articles tend to average wages together according to education and years of service. Their tabulations generally include the chairman of the board, various vice presidents and plant managers and do not reflect the achievement of the average graduate. They consistently fail to include an analysis of the investment a college education requires. In reality, the bright high school graduate would make more real money over a 20-year period if he went directly to work "on the hill" than he would if he graduated from college. Furthermore, he would find little difference between his wages and those of the college graduate in the period from 20-30 years after high school graduation.

Discussion of the paper of P. B. LIEBERMANN, presented at the St. Louis meeting October, 1917, and printed in Bulletin No. 127, July, 1917, pp. 1051 to 1062. P. B. LIEBERMANN.-As mentioned in my paper, a special investigation was made on the effect of dirt on the track, for the -express purpose of educating mine operators to the advantage of keeping their tracks clean. As to the benefit of clean tracks to the saving in battery consumption, that can be easily determined if the rate of discharge is known under existing conditions, that is, on dirty tracks. The tests have shown that tracks covered with coal dust cause an increase in draw-bar pull of about 30 per cent. The battery discharge table will show the capacity corresponding to the new rate of discharge and will thereby disclose the possible saving in battery consumption. The difference between dirty tracks and clean tracks will be found large enough to have an appreciable effect on the size of the storage-battery locomotive, and for a locomotive of any given size it may mean

ThE nickel and cobalt base superalloys employed in gas turbine engines under some conditions' oxidize at an accelerated rate when exposed at elevated temperatures to atmospheres containing minor quantities of sea salt. It is generally agreed by investigators in the field that the major steps comprising this phenomena of accelerated oxidation, also called hot corrosion or more commonly, sulfidation, are a) a slag composed primarily of Na2S04 is formed on turbine components, b) the protective oxide scale is rendered ineffectual, c) the slag reacts with. the substrate to form metal sulfides, and d) the substrate is rapidly oxidized. Sodium sulfate, a minor constituent of sea salt, is formed within the gas turbine engine from the reactions between NaC1, the major constituent of sea salt, and the oxides of sulfur.' Depending upon concentration, engine compression ratio, and temperature, the Na2S04 will be present in the gaseous or condensed state. It has been determined that in order for sulfi-dation to occur the Na2S04 must be present in the condensed state.' Although a number of sulfidation mechanisms have been postulated, there is no consistent explanation of oxide scale breakdown and subsequent catastrophic oxidation. Some investigators believe that after oxide scale breakdown, the Na2SO4 reacts with the substrate to form lower-valent sulfur compounds. The accelerated rate of oxidation is due to oxidation of a nickel-sulfide phase." Other investigators believe that sulfur from the fused salt reacts with chromium in the alloy to form chromium-rich sulfides; thereby depleting the alloy of an element which imparts oxidation resistance.3,4 This publication will demonstrate that the accelerated rate of oxidation associated with sul-fidation is due to interactions between Na20, a con-stituent of NazSO.,, ancl the substrate. The aim of this study was to separate and determine the effect of compounds of sulfur and sodium on the oxidation kinetics of various nickel-base superalloys, in order to elucidate the sulfidation mechanism. The work reported herein is sponsored in part by the Naval Ship and Development Center-Investigation of EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The nickel base alloys B-1900, U-700, and Waspaloy were chosen for this study. The nominal compositions are presented in Table I. The specimens, approximately 1 in. by 1 in. by 0.060 in. received in the "as cast" condition were polished with 600 grit emery, washed, and rinsed with acetone immediately prior to oxidation experiments. Sulfida-tion attack was duplicated in the laboratory by apply-ing a saturated aqueous solution of Na2S04 onto the al loy substrate and subsequently exposing the specimens in oxygen at elevated temperature. The method of Na2S04 application is described elsewhere in detail.6 In another set of experiments the affected substrate microstructure associated with sulfidation was reproduced free of the normal oxide scale, by reacting and diffusing elemental sulfur into the alloy. The experimental procedure is also described elsewhere in detail. All oxidation studies were performed using an Ainsworth thermobalance type RV-AU-1, which is readable to 0.01 mg and is reproducible to ±0.03 mg. THE time-honored description of the growth of metal crystals to form polycrystalline aggregates is. one in which two important steps are considered: (1) nucleation, and (2) dendritic growth, each dendrite starting from its individual nucleus and resulting (upon slow cooling, assuming no solid phase changes) in a macrograin. This picture of the process of crystallization is incomplete, and it is with the hope of enlarging upon it that the following summary and correlation of experimental results are given. MOSAIC STRUCTURE For an exact definition of the mosaic structure of metal crystals-if, indeed, one can be found that will hold for all metals-one must await the results of much experimental work in this field. The writer's investigations have been. confined almost entirely to copper and a few of its alloys. The following terms are proposed, and will be used in this report: Macromosaic Structure1.-Large-scale mosaic structure; more specifically, mosaic structure of a scale large enough to produce splitting of Laue spots on back-reflection Lane X-ray patterns2. In their paper on the directional properties in cold-rolled and annealed commercial bronze,' Phillips and Samans suggest that cupronickel, under distinctly different treatments, shows both "45" ears" and "90" ears. Fig. I shows the ears on some cupronickel cups made some 17 years ago for bullet jackets for small arms ammunition. In this case the material heated to 425° C. had "45" ears, while that annealed at 950°C. showed long "90" ears" when drawn with the same tools. The method of cupping, the shape of cupping tools, etc., were found to have very little influence on the earing tendency, but the deeper the cup was drawn, the higher the ears would be. Method of Manufacture Cupronickel cast bars were 1 in. thick. Ordinarily, they were rolled with numerous passes to a thickness of 0.4 to 0.2 in., according to conditions. They were then given a single intermediate anneal, and rolled to finish thickness, frequently 0.032 in. After a last anneal the material was cupped with a "cut and draw" operation. Stress-corrosion cracking of copper-base alloys is of considerable importance and has been the subject of many investigations which employed various accelerated tests and long-time service tests. The outstand¬ing accelerated tests used are variations of either the mercury cracking test reported by Rogers in 1905( 1)2 or the ammonia test reported in 1910(2). The ease of applica¬tion of the mercury test is probably the reason industry adopted it. Subsequent investigation of this test(3,4) revealed that a minimum threshold stress was necessary before mercury cracking could develop. Since season cracking has been found in some instances in caliber 0.3o ammunition which has passed the mercury test, it is evident that the threshold stress value of the mercury test may be too high for dis¬tinguishing between acceptable and un¬acceptable caliber 0.30 cartridge cases. This condition has naturally led to the study of an ammonia test with its ability to cause cracks with almost any stress level. But the lack of a definite threshold value means that standards are necessary for evaluating the results of the ammonia test.

The Institute maintains a dual relationship with students: (1) an individual relationship with a Student Associate; and (2) a relationship with local organizations of students, known as Affiliated Student Societies or Student Chapters. 1. The conditions of Student Associateship are set forth in Section 8, .Article 1 of the By-laws of the Institute (see p. 45 and following pages) During 1934, sundry amendments were made for the purpose of improving the student relationship. Post-graduate students are now eligible; and the associateship can be maintained, with the payment of the regular dues of $2 per gear, for 18 months following graduation in June. A Student Associate is given a subscription to MINING A ND METALLURGY: he is accorded the privilege of getting special publications such as "The Porphyry Coppers" and "Ore Deposits of the Western States" at the reduced prices applicable to Members; he has the privileges of the Engineering Societies Employment Service and the Engineering Societies Library; and he is not only invited but urged to attend all meetings of the Institute, its Divisions and its Local Sections. The Institute wants to extend the hand of professional fellowship to students following mineral industries curricula.

The adsorption behavior of chalcopyrite has been studied at different xanthate concentrations and flow rates in a column apparatus with potassium ethyl xanthate as the collector. Based upon the experiment results an equation of the type: 1/F = K3 + m3C + k2/t.Cm2.fm1 is proposed to account for the experimental data. Among copper minerals an early study on chalcocite by Gaudin and Schuman (Taggart, 1951) is well known for its research on the kinetics of the reaction by conventional method of mass balance between the products of reaction and xanthate consumed. The results were interpreted by the concept of ion exchange adsorption. Szeglowski (1977) conducted measurements on the adsorption of potassium ethyl xanthate on copper polarized to various potentials, the adsorption being measured by radio-tracer techniques. The adsorption in the range -1800 to 700 mv was found to be a reversible physical adsorption. The potential range in which the primary electrode process could lead to surface coverage with a minimum number of product layers was evaluated. The adsorption density of xanthate on sulfide surface was found to be related to the concentration of xanthate in solution and concentration of depressants as: [ ]

THE world production of copper for the first eight months of 1927 shows an increase of 3 per cent over the same period in 1926. Since February of this year, however, production has been considerably curtailed. The United States reduction in the last four months has been offset by the increased South Ameri-can and Belgian Congo production. The United States is now producing 58 per cent of the world production, Chile and Peru 17.3 per cent, Belgian Congo 5 per cent. In 1926 the United States produced 54 per cent, Chile and Peru 16.3 per cent, Belgian Congo 6.3 per cent. THE development of the cube-on-edge secondary re-crystallization texture in Si-Fe strip depends upon the ability of inclusions to restrain normal grain growth. This ability is determined by the number and size of inclusions, which, for a given composition, is controlled by the thermal history of the material during the prior processing.' It has been shown2 that increasing the silicon content decreases the solubility of sulfur, and it is the purpose of this note to show the consequences of this decreased solubility for secondary recrystallization. Heats were made as previously described and cast into graphite molds.' The compositions are shown in Table I. Slabs 1 in. thick were cut from the ingots and either hot-rolled from 1000°C in the as-cast condition or after one of the heat treatments described later. The processing to the final gage of 12 mils followed the previous procedure.' To avoid cracking, the 5.2 pct Si alloy was cold-rolled at 150" to 200°C rather than at room temperature. In Silver Plume, Colo., there is a bachelor miner who offers individualized tours of his mine, The Silver Cloud. It is an interesting tour because he drove the mine himself and the view from the shack up there is spectacular. Beside that, he will probably invite you into his kitchen to sit around the old cook stove and drink coffee. When Andy first started his tour business he put a sign on the main street to advertise the fact. The sign read in part: "Women not welcome, but they will be tolerated at $3.00 a head”- the usual fee is $2.50. The sign lasted about 48 hours. Andy had to take it down because "all the ladies in town got mad at me. Now I take them all for $2.50 right across the board," he says. The mining industry is not only reticent about hiring women but traditionally does not even permit women to enter some mines. It would appear, what with the recent action on an equal-rights-for- women amendment in Congress, that we may be wise to examine the prospect.
