Uranium was cold rolled to a reduction in thickness of 90 pct and the preferred orientation of the grains was determined from X-ray intensity data. Complete pole figures for a large number of atom planes were plotted, and the preferred orientation was found to be duplex (102) [0101 + (012) [021]. These preferred orientations are compared with those reported for many of the hexagonal-close-packed metals. THE preferred orientation of a highly reduced cold-rolled uranium strip was determined in order to obtain additional experimental data which would be useful in further understanding the deformation mechanisms of uranium. The preferred orientations reported herein are not in agreement with those theoretically predicted by Calnan and Clews' for cold-rolled uranium sheets, and differ somewhat from those reported from experiments by Fisher, and Burke and Turkalo. Such variations might be accounted for by differences in the fabrication temperature and the reductions. Experimental Procedure The uranium used in this investigation had been hot rolled to 0.060 in. at 575°C from 0.393 in., and from a 0.060 to 0.020 in. thick sheet at 275°C. From this point the sheet was cold reduced 90 pct to 0.002 in. at room temperature. Three specimens were used to obtain complete pole-figure data. The first was a 1/2 in. square section illuminated by the X-ray beam on the rolling surface. The other two were l/2 in. square longitudinal and transverse sections each made as follows: Approximately 200 1/2 in. square sections of the foil were piled one on top of the other, so that the rolling direction for each piece was kept coincident. A 1/2 in. square by 1/8 in. thick steel section was placed on the top and bottom of a pile and the entire assembly was then bolted tightly together through a 1/8 in. diam hole drilled down through the center. Each pile was then surface-ground from the two proper sides to sections 1/2 in. square by 3/16 in. thick. These specimens were then polished flat and electro-polished to remove 0.005 in. of the surfaces to be examined. It can be shown that uranium is so opaque to a Cu Ka X-ray beam that only a small percentage would be transmitted by one micron of uranium. Therefore, a method of measuring the X-ray intensities diffracted from specimen surfaces was used. The specimens were mounted in a modified Schulz reflection holder' which automatically changed the position of the specimen at a constant rate. The holder, in turn, was mounted on a General Electric XRD-3 Spectro-Goniometer and an automatic record made of the diffracted X-ray intensity vs specimen position. While a specimen moved automatically through 10" inclination, at a rate of l° per min, it simultaneously rotated 360" about a normal to the illuminated surface. (The inclination and rotation angles are referred to as F and a, respectively.) The data were then plotted along the resulting spiral path on a stereographic projection, Fig. 1. A three-parameter mathematical model for one-dimensional flow in porous media is developed. The objective of the model is to predict accurately the longitudinal dispersion associated with the flow of either gases or liquids over a wide range of Reynolds number. A qualitative analysis of the model parameters is given. Published experimental pulse-response curves are compared with results predicted by the model. Several general types of problems are given for which the model can be used. INTRODUCTION The problem of multicomponent single-phase flow through porous media is encountered in the study of petroleum reservoirs, gas chromatographic and ion-exchange columns, industrial fixed-bed con-tacters and elsewhere. These particular examples span the wide range of flow conditions possible; Reynolds numbers of less than l0-4 are not unusual in oil-production problems, while values in excess of 103 are common in large fixed-bed operations. The study of flow-dependent transport phenomena is complicated both by the changes in the character of the flow over this range, and by the irregularity of the flow boundaries inherent to porous media. Dispersion is one of the important phenomena known to depend fundamentally on flow conditions as well as on fluid and medium properties. As used in this paper, the term "dispersion" refers to the observed mixing of fluid elements of different composition which occurs in flow systems. The actual mechanism may be one or more of a number listed below. Only dispersion in the direction of the mean flow (referred to as axial or longitudinal dispersion, or mixing) is considered here, although lateral dispersion arises as part of certain coupled mechanisms. MECHANISMS FOR LONGITUDINAL DISPERSION A number of distinct mechanisms are known3,5,7,8 to contribute to the phenomenon of longitudinal dispersion. The more important of these are as follows. 1. Molecular diffusion in the flow direction. 2. Turbulent (cell) mixing. 3. Lateral transport processes coupled with velocity and/or residence time distributions, including: (a) "Taylor" diffusion caused by the interaction of velocity profiles in individual voids with lateral molecular diffusion; (b) separation and remixing or interdiffusion of streams having different velocities around particles; and (c) the couplipg of gross velocity profiles, caused by viscous instability or inhomogeneous porosity, with lateral dispersion. 4. Finite mass-transfer rate between a porous matrix and the flowing phase, and finite diffusion rate inside elements of the porous matrix. It is a well documented fact that these mechanisms, whether acting individually or in combinations, produce essentially similar integral effects. The observed dispersion can be described approximately by solutions of the diffusion equation with a properly chosen dispersion coefficient. Necessary conditions for equivalence between dispersion and diffusion are discussed by Klinkenberg and Sjenitzer.7 Apparently these conditions are not satisfied exactly in many real systems. "Best fit" solutions of the diffusion equation often depart appreciably from measured breakthrough curves for the usual pulse- or step-forced experimental systems. In particular, pulse response curves usually show some degree of asymmetry and "tailing" which cannot be reproduced by the one-parameter diffusion model. The three-parameter model proposed herein attempts to produce these effects in a realistic manner. Asymmetry and tailing are predicted for certain sets of parameter values, while for other sets the new model agrees with the diffusion model. VELOCITY DEPENDENCE OF DISPERSION Molecular diffusion apparently controls at sufficiently low Reynolds number in both gas and liquid systems.*l3 At Re > 20, turbulent cell mixing is dominant for gases flowing at low pressure; the data of McHenry and Wilhelm8 show that the mixing cell is approximately 1 particle diameter long in random sphere packs. on the other hand, the data

The metallurgical fuel of Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico has been a Veiny tardy member in the caravan of western industrial progress. The history of western coke has naturally been closely related to the development of the metallurgy of iron and steel and the precious metals, in the State of Colorado. It was at Leadville, with a population of 300 in 1877, that the Sentinel was published by Richard S. Allen. The Sentinel gave very full accounts of the various mineral discoveries at the new town of Leadville, which found their way to the more widely circulated journals of the East, and attracted the attention of many people. At the close of 1878, a census slowed a total of 5040 persons. The first smelter was established in 1877, at Malta, two miles from Leadville, by A. R. Meyer, but was not successful. It was succeeded by the Harrison Reduction Works, in 1878. The La Plata began with one furnace in June, 1878, and in 1879 had four furnaces in active operation. These furnaces used charcoal for fuel, and, because of hot tops, suffered a tremendous loss in lead and silver. This difficulty was overcome by the erection of 50 single-bank 10-ft. beehive ovens at Crested Butte, Colo., in 1880. The slack coal sent to these ovens was very pure, and yielded a coke carrying as little as 4.5 per cent. ash. Among the pioneers in the Leadville district were Grant, Eddy, James, Billings, Eiler, and Dickson. To these men the West owes the present expansion of its mining industry, and the erection of metallurgical processes for the treatment of precious metals. On Mar. 1, 1876, Pueblo was connected to the Atchison, Topeka & Sank Fe by the Pueblo & Arkansas Valley branch. The first smelter was erected in Pueblo by Mather and Geist. This modest plant grew into the immense Pueblo Smelting and Refining Co., now a part of the American Smelting and Refining Co. Coke for these small furnaces was made from unwashed Engleville coal, in 186 single-bank 12-ft. ovens at El Moro, in the Trinidad district, and it was not uncommon for the percentage of ash to exceed the percentage of fixed carbon in the coke. (Continuing the discussion of the paper of James Johnston, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 85, January, 1914, pp. 107 to 133.) This paper cannot fail of being of great interest and value to all who are interested in the cyanide process, on account of the important developments which it records. Mr. Johnston is to be commended for the large amount of detail which he gives, and the company and its management for permitting the publication of data of this character, which while of great value to others could well be considered private property. It might be discussed from a number of standpoints: First, as an example of recent practice in mill and cyanide plant construction; second, the mill practice; third, the cyanide practice; and fourth, the new features in cyanide treatment involved. Perhaps a more vivid way of expressing it would be : First, the equipment or tools with which the various operations are carried on, are they the best and most efficient which could have been selected for their respective uses; and, second, is the best use in every case made of these tools? It may be well inquired is the highest possible recovery of silver made at the lowest cost per ounce recovered? For after all, the making of the greatest ultimate profit is inseparably associated with successful metallurgical practice; there must therefore be at all times a careful balance maintained between recovery and cost of obtaining it. I wish to call attention in a very general way to the equipment used and to an anticipation of questions which are bound to arise in this connection. However, the. bulk of my discussion will be confined to the presentation of certain additional data, together with a more or less general discussion showing the line of development which leads up to the present practice and .the applicability of certain features of it to similar problems elsewhere. There are a number of vital points of broad general interest involved in Nipissing low-grade practice upon which metallurgists will by no means be agreed to which I wish to call particular attention in the hope that it will lead to the presentation of data y others of practice in other districts which will' assist in reconciling this divergence of opinion.

THE OLD Pueblo smelter is being dismantled after 43 years of continuous operation, from 1878 to 1921. It was built by Mather and Geist, on a bluff overlooking the Arkansas River just below the, city of Pueblo. At the time of its construction Pueblo was considered a most favorably situated town for a custom smelter. Coal, coke, fuel, limestone, iron ore, lead, silver, and, gold ores were plentiful. It was a "downhill pull" from all directions to Pueblo. Labor, both common and skilled, was plentiful and efficient. Leadville was in bonanza and there were not sufficient furnaces in Colorado to handle the ore offered. The plant prospered from the start. It soon required more capital; so the owners; with the assistance of Thomas Nickerson of Boston, at that time prominent in the affairs of the A., T. & S. F. railway, formed the Pueblo Smelting & Refining Co. About this time, also, very heavy shipments of rich silver ore from New Mexico began to come in. Agencies were established for the purchase of ores in the most important mining camps in the country from Kingman, Ariz., to Butte, Mont. Highly siliceous silver-bearing ores from Butte were shipped to Pueblo in train loads. This was used chiefly in the concentration of leady mattes. RECOLLECTIONS OF MR. GEIST, FOUNDER OF PLANT Mr. Geist is living in Guadalajara and has sent the following brief letter: "Early in 1878 the firm of Mather & Geist, which had been operating in Utah and had then closed their smelter there, after diligent search for a new location selected Pueblo. We erected the first smelter in the valley, blowing in the first furnace in 1878. Mather & Geist carried on until January, 1882, when they transferred all their business to the Pueblo Smelting & Refining Co., which had been organized in December, 1881. Full details of this transfer are given in the enclosed Report, which was issued early in 1882, for the purpose of interesting more capital, in which we succeeded admirably. "I personally did all the work of manager and super-intendent, some job in these days. My technical quali-fications were that I was a member of the class of 1866, Yale Sheffield Scientific. I was born in 1848, so was the youngest member of the class.

An empirical study of the nature of the embrittle-ment which occurs in martensitic and semiaustenitic precipitation hardening stainless steels upon exposure at temperatures of from about 550" to 875°F has been undertaken. This work was aimed at determining cazusation and means of controlling this phenomenon. A commercial copper bearing precipitation hardening alloy was used as a basic material for study. The effect of heat treatment variables was studied as was the effect of variations in analysis. It is concluded from the evidence that martensitic and semiaustenitic precipitation hardening stainless steels are subject to 885°F ernbrittlement similar to that observed in the straight chromium stainless steels. A characteristic of precipitation hardening stainless steels which has limited their use in certain applications is that they embrittle when held at temperatures in the range of from about 550" to 900°F. This is true to a more or less degree in all currently available alloys, either the basically martensitic type or the semiaustenitic type. The rate of embrittlement varies markedly with exposure temperature, being low at 550" to 600°F and in-creasing as the temperature increases. In spite of this embrittlement, these alloys with their unique combination of high mechanical strength, reasonable toughness, and good corrosion resistance are used in many hundreds of applications. Nevertheless, there are potential applications where the embrittle-ment described is a limiting factor. The purpose of this investigation was to study the embrittlement of these alloys and to find a way to control or eliminate it. GUIDELINES USED IN PRESENT WORK The work reported in this paper is based on a study of 17-4 PH*, a very widely used alloy. It has been used *Trademark of Armco Steel Corp., licensor. in pressurized water and boiling water atomic reactors operating at about 550°F for a number of years. As the life of such equipment is extended or operating temperatures are raised, the possibility of embrit-tlement becomes of increasing concern to materials engineers. Much investigation work was done with respect to the use of 17-4 PH at 550°F. K. C. Antony' states "Such estimation" (of an activation energy for the diffusion of chromium in iron) "would indicate W. This manuscript is based on a talk presented at the symposium on New Developments in Stainless Steel, sponsored by the IMD Corrosion Resistant Metals Committee, Detroit, Mich., October 14-15, 1968. significant secondary aging is improbable at temperatures less than 700°F within normal component service life". This statement is modified however by the recognition of the accelerating tendencies of applied stress and internal stress as well as the possible effect of irradiation. In this investigation of 17-4 PH, the H 1100 (1900°F-1 hr oil quench or air cool + 1100°F-4 hr-air cool) condition was used, partly because this condition is normally used in atomic reactors. As shown later, the precipitation hardening temperature has no real bearing on the rate of embrittlement. An exposure temperature of 800°F was selected since embrittlement at 800°F is rapid, permitting development of relative data in time periods of 400 to 500 hr. For those not familiar, a nominal present day analysis of 17-4 PH is: C Mn P S SiCrNiCuCbN 0.04 0.30 0.015 0.015 0.60 16.00 4.30 3.25 0.23 0.030 TYPICAL BEHAVIOR OF 17-4 PH Figs. 1 and 2 show the behavior of a commercial heat of 17-4 PH under the conditions defined. Characteristically, 800°F exposure causes a rapid drop in Charpy V-notch impact strength. Tensile and yield strengths gradually increase and a gradual loss of elongation and reduction of area occur, accompanied by an increase in hardness. Notched tensile strength increases to 125 hr exposure and then sharply decreases after exposure for 500 hr. The notched vs un-notched tensile ratio remains virtually constant to exposure for 125 hr (1.67 to 1.56) but drops to 1.15 after 500 hr. Tensile ductility is not alarmingly affected even after much longer exposure times than these. For example, samples aged at 1100°F for 1 hr exposed at 800°F for 4000 hr showed a drop in elonga-tion of from 13 to 11 pct and in reduction of area of from 58 to 37 pct. California had a record year in production and drilling activity, but the results have not been sufficient to keep up with the enormous increase in demand due to war activity. During the year, 164 dry wildcats were drilled, 80 dry wells in proved areas, 31 gas wells, and 1158 successful oil-well completions for a total of 1433 wells, compared with a total of 765 in 1942. With new discoveries of only 20,000,000 and production of 283,000,000 bbl. for the year, total reserves of California oil have decreased more than 250,000,000 bbl. However, revised estimates of the reserves of old fields indicate an increase in the state's reserves of I00,000,000 barrels. The completion of 1158 wells has served only to maintain the maximum efficient daily rate of production at 800,000 barrels. There is evidence in many fields that oil is being withdrawn too rapidly to obtain the maximum recovery, and more rapidly than is conducive to good production practice. Statistics for 1943 as compared with I942 are shown in the table in the next column, Supply and Demand Steadily mounting needs of the military forces and increased industrial consumption raised total demand for all petroleum products on the Pacific Coast to 914,000 bbl. daily in 1943. That all-time record demand was 149,ooo bbl. daily higher than in 1942 and 214,000 bbl. daily above 1941 demand. Despite restrictions due to shortages of critical material, crude-oil production was boosted from 680,000 bbl. daily in 1942 to 779,000 bbl. daily in 1943, the highest level in 15 years. However, the new crude supply plus natural gasoline production and imports from other states totaled only 840,000 bbl. daily, leaving a deficiency between supply and demand of 74,000 bbl. daily. That shortage had to be made up by withdrawals from inventories, which had been steadily depleted during the previous four years. Aboveground reserves, which totaled 159,574,000 bbl. on Jan. I, 1939, were down to ~8.000,000, bbl. at the end of 1943. Significantly enough, the greater part of that decrease occurred during the last six months of I9437 when more than 23,000,000 bbl. was taken from inventories of both crude and products. INTRODUCTION The maximum yield of washed coal and the required ash and sulfur contents are the only performance factors of direct, immediate interest to any operator. Yet since the turn of the century coal preparation engineers have repeatedly sought more sophisticated performance criteria that could be used to draw comparisons between different cleaning operations and to permit generalizations about types of cleaning equipment or kinds of coal. Proliferation of efficiency formulas resulted. Hardly a year goes by, and certainly not an International Coal Preparation Congress, without the introduction of some new formula or some new concept of an existing criterion. This is merely the usual quest for improvement, because the performance criteria available today, although highly useful, are imperfect. Moreover, they are not as widely understood as they might be. The First International Coal Preparation Conference, which was held in Paris in 1950, accomplished a great deal toward establishing uniformity in terminology and methods of expressing cleaning results; the proceedings of that conference provide a wealth of detailed information on the various performance criteria, their uses and their limitations. For ease of discussion, the various performance criteria can conveniently be classed according to the degree to which they are dependent on the density composition of the raw coal treated. Some are directly dependent, some are only indirectly dependent, and some are, under certain circum- stances, essentially independent. DEPENDENT CRITERIA The yield and ash content of a washed coal are directly dependent on the washability characteristics of the raw coal from which it is derived. Thus, they are manifestly unsuited to comparing the performance of different plants, because no two plant feeds are the same. In fact, yield and ash content, by themselves, are inadequate for even routine day-to-day control. The continuous variation that occurs in the amount of impurity in raw coal, and sometimes in the float ash, make it impossible to tell whether a reduction in yield or an increase in the ash content of the washed coal results from any malfunction or misadjustment of the cleaning equipment. Recovery Efficiency For many years the most popular performance criteria that are only indirectly dependent on the washability characteristics of the raw coal have been efficiency formulas. , The solution of the housing and sanitation problem in mining communities, keeping in view both economic and humanitarian aspects, demands the best thought of the management of such enterprises. Upon the solution depend the health and comfort of the employee and his family, and as a consequence his contentment and efficiency. The following description covcrs briefly the methods installed for Witherbee, Sherman & Co. The operation of the system has been for about two years under the direct supervision of T. A. Hammond, Land Agent, and I am indebted to him for a compilation of the results. Sanitation The sanitary service covers 238 tenements. The installation cost was about $22 per tenement, as follows: Privy, $15; privy box, $3; proportion of incinerator cost, $2; garbage can, $2. The operating cost is $1 per month for each tenement. In considering the installation of an ordinary village system of water supply and sewerage two difficulties were encountered: First, lack of a sufficient quantity of water; there is no stream large enough, as Mineville is situated very close to the divide between the Lake Champlain and Hudson River watersheds. A storage reservoir was tried, but the only location available, among glacial hills, would not hold water. Second, the expense of digging ditches for the distribution of water and sewer pipes is so great as to be prohibitive; Mineville is built chiefly in a valley covered in the bottom with drift, in this case a combination of boulders and hard pan. Digging in this material costs 80c. to $1 per cubic yard, and pipes must be placed 41/2 ft. down to be below frost. The houses are scattered along 4 miles of streets, the oldest having been built in the original forest 65 years ago. The newer houses have gone up a few at a time wherevcr a clear space could be found and the slopes were not too steep. This has advantages, as it separates the dwellings into

NO important discoveries of petroleum during 1932 are reported from Canada. New Brunswick, which has a small production from one field, was inactive, and the production showed a decline from 6600 bbl. in 1931 to about 6300 bbl. for the year 1932. The old fields in Ontario increased from 123,000 to about 131,000 bbl. Alberta showed a decline of more than one-third, from 1,413,631 bbl. in 1931 to about 913,000 bbl. in 1932. This decline was due principally to the restrictions placed on the flow of gas wells in the Turner Valley field, from which the crude naphtha is obtained that accounted for more than 93 per cent of the production of Alberta and for more than 80 per cent of the production of all Canada in 1932. The starting of new wells to the limestone that produces the naphtha-bearing gas was prohibited late in 1931, and only wells started before that time were finished during 1932. One well was drilled in the Turner Valley field to a depth of 7555 ft., establishing a depth record for Canada. It passed out of the Madison limestone at 5560 ft., and encountered showings of oil in the underlying formations, probably of Devonian age. Commercial production had not been established by the end of the year. Commercial oil wells were brought in in two areas in Ontario which had previously been considered as productive of gas only— in the Dawn gas field, Lambton County, and in Raleigh Township, Kent County. The discovery wells had initial productions of about 50 bbl. per day, but no production of major importance is indicated. In Alberta, outside the Turner Valley district, two wildcats were drilled northwest. of Lethbridge in the Keho Lake vicinity. Both failed to make commercial producers in the Madison limestone, but one was testing upper sands at the close of the year. Good showings of oil are reported. A very small production was found in the Madison limestone in a wildcat well on the Twin River structure southeast of Lethbridge and another well has been started near by on what is considered on geophysical evidence to be a better location structurally. About 15 locations were made on the Canadian side of the border north of the Cut Bank development in Montana.

This paper presents a discussion of the pressure maintenance operations which were begun in the New Hope Field. Franklin County. Texas. in 1944. The project has required the injection of extraneous waters at depths from 7.300 to 8.000 ft with intake well-head pressures up to 4.000 psi in three different reservoirs — the Bacon. Hill. and Pittsburg. Records of oil and water production. water injection and the GOR have been kept for each reservoir and reservoir pressures were taken at regular intervals. These data indicate that the Bacon Reservoir had no apparent water encroachment up to the time of water injection. However. the Pittsburg and Hill reservoirs had some natural water influx hut not sufficient to prevent pressures from declining below the bubble point. The Bacon and Hill reservoirs responded almost immediately to water injection. while the Pittsburg which is the least permeable. has shown good pressure response only since .August, 1948. The principle objective of the project has been to increase ultimate recovery. Success of the project to date also has resulted in reduced lifting costs. Esti- mates based on the initial water breakthrough patterns indicate that the primary objective of substantial additional recovery will he accomplished, and there is a possibility that the original estimates elf oil recovery with pres-sure maintenance will he exceeded. INTRODUCTION This pressure maintenance project was one of the earliest primary pressure maintenance programs to he attempted on a multiple zone field. There are three producing reservoirs into which water is being injected for the purpose of maintaining pressure and increasing the ultimate recovery- from each. This paper is limited in scope to al1 account of the development of the project. the pressure production relationship prior to the injection of water and the effect of water injection on the producing reservoirs. Also discussed are the nature of the injection system and the indicated results on initial water break-through in the Bacon Reservoir. FIELD CONDITIONS The New Hope Field, which is located about 12 miles northeast of Winusboro, Franklin County, Texas, is an elongated symmetrical anticline containing four known oil reservoirs. The reservoirs are of the Trinity group of the Comanchean or Lower Cretaceous period and are found in Table I. The oil productive portion of each reservoir is not present in all of the producing wells because their areas and positions vary with respect to one another. Fig. 1 shows the relative position of the four reservoirs and illusIrate? how some wells could penetrate all four, while others are restricted to three. two. or perhaps one. depending on structural location. The first three reservoirs contain undersaturated oil. The deepest. the Elledge, has a primary gas cap. Although this reservoir covers a considerable area of the field. it has a very thin section and a low order of permeability. Elledge producing wells have generally been characterized by an early increase in GOR, making it necessary to recomplete them in other reservoirs. (At present. one well is completed in the Elledge. which is still producing.) Because of the difficulties en-countered in producing oil from this reservoir. and the small quantity of oil actually present. future attempts at producing it will probably be on a salvage basis during the later life of the program. For this reason, the remainder of this report will be confined to a discussion of the Bacon, Hill and pius-burg reservoirs.

Well designed density instruments are very accurate and give an excellent record of the steadiness of the operation. Controlling the density of a pulp with an instrument, as described by Mr. Bean, is new and the experiences in developing this controller at the American Cyanimid Co.'s Mineral Dressing Laboratory are very interesting and should be extremely helpful to others who are planning on designing or installing controlling density instruments. Instruments for recording the density of the classifier overflow or flotation feed are rather common in ore concentrators, but there are a number of profitable uses for these instruments that are not too well known. Density recorders with bubble tubes submerged to different depth in a classifier pool give an excellent record of the classifier operation. The loading and unloading of the machine, that is so easily masked in the density of the overflow, can be easily recorded if the instrument is installed at some depth in the classifier pool. On some occasions, two instruments with bubble tubes at different depths give a more candid picture of the irregularities in the classifier operation. When cleaner machines are operated in closed circuit with roughers, a record of the density of the cleaner tails will indicate the circulating load in the circuit and is very helpful in coordinating different operators, because quite often the circulating load will be increasing for some time before the analyses of the products will change. Density recorders are used to record the variations in the dilution of the underflow from thickening tanks and in at least one plant the instrument controls the underflow.

A technique was developed to calculate the density of liquid metals from the profile of a weighed levitated drop obtained by emitted light photography and calibration. The density of liquid copper was determined over the temperature range 1370" to 2100°K and expressed with the equation: The molar volumes and thermal coefficients of expansion are calculated. Copper, upon melting, was found to expand 3.34 pct. A knowledge of the density of liquid metals is essential as it is a parameter appearing in most theories of the liquid state. The liquid density is also necessary for the calculation of the commercially important contraction occurring on solidification. Unfortunately good density values are rarely available and the present work was undertaken to establish a new method of density determination free from the limitations of the existing methods. For liquid metals with high melting points, the variation and the limited number of density values reported in the literature have been caused primarily by difficulties in technique, a matter which has been adequately discussed by Urbain.' In all the methods used for measuring the density of the high-melting liquid metals there are sources of error, and corrections have to be made. For example, in the method of balanced columns, the formation of gas bubbles in one or both arms was a great source of error. In the pyknometer3 and immersed-sinker methods, corrections of certain volumes for thermal expansion to the operating temperature exceed 4 pct. In the maximum-bubble method5 a correction for the thermal expansion of the bubble-tube is used (about 1.6 pct); a second correction takes into account the change in the volume of liquid displaced by the bubble-tube (about 3.5 pct). Another method used is based on the shape of a drop of liquid, at rest on an inert refractory plaque, obtained photographically or radiographi-cally. The volume is calculated from the shape, which is sensitive to the surface tension and supporting material, by some intricate empirical relation. The drop contour changes with 90 deg rotation of the support.7 The application of all methods is limited by reaction between liquid metal and the apparatus. The successful stabilization of a mass of liquid metal during levitation melting8 afforded a technique for measuring the density of liquid metals out of contact with solid materials. The technique was developed by using copper as the density of liquid copper has already been studied extensively, thus allowing comparison with the new method. It consists of calculating the volume from the dimensioned profile of the levitated drop obtained by emitted-light photography and careful calibration. The molten egg-shaped drop spins around the magnetic axis of the coil (lined vertically) at a speed which seems to increase with increasing temperature. The method does not involve corrections and the experimental setup allows the use of vacuum or special atmospheres. The maximum operating temperature is limited by excessive evaporation of metal from the droplet. EXPERIMENTAL Levitating System. A stabilizing ring was used in conjunction with a 3-turn levitating coil energized by a 450-kc per sec, 10-kw Toccotron with a high current-low voltage output stabilized to f 1 pet.' APyrex glass tube with a Pyrex Optical flat window inserted through the coil and ring allowed the use of special atmospheres during levitation melting, as shown in Fig. 1. Optical System. Fig. 1 shows the optical arrangement used to photograph the profiles of the drop, parallel and perpendicular to the vertical spinning axis, simultaneously on the same frame of a high-speed 35-mm film. The optical system was adjusted to avoid any distortion of the profiles and to ensure that both profiles are in focus. The length of path from object to objective was about 30 cm, and a magnification factor close to 1 was obtained with the single-lens reflex-camera system. Temperature Measurement and Control. In operation, the specimen temperature was constant to 5 C for a fixed power input to the levitating coil and fixed rate of gas flow through the tube. DESPITE the fact that a combination of metals-aluminum-zinc-tin, and sometimes aluminum-zinc-cadmium-is extensively used for aluminum solders, as well as for die-castings, the constitution of these alloys has not yet been made clear. I. BINARY SYSTEMS The system aluminum-zinc is the basis of the ternary alloys under consideration. Their composition was made sufficiently clear by the investigations of Rosenhain and Archbutt,1 Bauer and Vogel,2 Sander and Meissner,3 Hanson and Gayler4 and Isihara.5 Only the temperature of decomposition of the crystals 0 seems still to be doubtful, whether it is considered as a compound of Al2Zn3 (according to Bauer and Vogel) or as an intermediate phase of variant composition (according to Hanson and Gayler). This temperature is given by most of the authors as in the neighborhood of 256° C., only Isihara giving 280° C. As its accurate determination is of special importance in the study of the ternary alloys under consideration it was experimentally controlled in the following manner: An alloy corresponding in composition to the formula Al2Zn3 was made, in which the temperature effect was found to be the greatest. This was drilled and a silver-constantan thermoelement inserted into the cavity so as to be in direct contact with the alloy. The whole was then very slowly heated and the heating and cooling curves determined. The transition temperature from the heating curve was found to be 281° C., whereas from the cooling curve it was 252° C.

A method is given for checking pore volume reserve estimates and transient water inflzix factors utilizing early well performance. Principal applications are based on the observation that there is a convenient transient time-range in terms of well spacing in which observed pressure drop will give a good indication of fluid-in-place. Primary quantity determined is a porosity-feet value applicable in the vicinity of an observation well. Checks on porosity or net pay thickness and permeability values also are obtained. These are particularly valuable in improving quality of interpretive factors entering into pore-volume reserve determinations for larger fields. In smaller fields, direct determination of total field reserves and approximate location of boundaries may be made in some cases. Well interference and production data plus a build-up curve on the observation well are needed. The build-up curve may be taken at any time. Field applications are given. The method can be applied with the completion of the second well on a new discovery or to older reservoirs by major changes in withdrawal rates from a local area. Appropriate test length permits results to be obtained with equal accuracy on widely spaced wells. Criteria for optimizing test conditions are given. Provision is made for various boundary and well effects including incomplete observation well build-up. INTRODUCTION Due to low quality data, initial pore volume reserve and water influx estimates may often vary by a factor of two or more from results obtained at a later date. Unfortunately, by conventional methods, more reliable answers from performance usually are not available until after most significant economic decisions have been made. Furthermore, in older reservoirs, uncertainties may still exist as to original oil-in-place, recovery factors and residual oil saturations due to incomplete or inaccurate performance data. This paper outlines situations and appropriate arrangements of basic transient theory whereby well interference data can be utilized to improve the quality of estimates under certain conditions. In addition to production data on offset producers, key information required is a measured pressure drop at an observation well, corrected for any incomplete build-up due to previous production, plus a formation capacity value derived from a conventional pressure build-up plot on the observation well. The method, as outlined, is strictly applicable only to a horizontal single-layered system of uniform rock characteristics containing a homogeneous fluid of low and constant compressibility. However, under the set of test conditions devised, requirements can usually be relaxed so that it should be applicable to most low permeability gas, water and undersaturated oil reservoirs. This is an area where more reliable information is certainly needed. BASIC CONSIDERATIONS A, B, C and F as subscripts or in the text refer to producing Well A, observation Well B, a more remote producing Well C and field boundary F. Combinations such as AB refer to distances and dimensionless times in terms of distances between these points, while single letters refer to distances and dimensionless times in terms of the well-bore or field radius. Equations covering definitions of quantities and complex situations are given in the Appendix. Key equations in practical units are given in Table 2. THE Star shaft is near the north boundary of the group of mining claims belonging to the Ground Hog Unit of the American Smelting and Refining Co., near Vanadium, N. Mex. The shaft bins and surface plant are served by a siding from the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad, and this factor of railroad transportation influenced the choice of site. This paper describes the shaft sinking only, and does not cover the surface plant or other parts of the mine or its equipment. Experience with this shaft seems of interest because of the mechanical mucking, good rate of progress, and the costs obtained at the present level of labor and material costs. The shaft has four compartments, as shown in fig. 1. Equipment: Riddell Mucker: The mucking was done by a clamshell bucket and a Riddell mucker, which, as in other shafts sunk with this machine, consisted of a carriage mounted on axles with double flanged wheels that traveled back and forth on a swinging track, parallel to the long axis of the shaft (fig. 2 to 6). Three air motors were mounted on the carriage; one hoisted the clam, one operated the bucket opening and closing device, and the third moved the carriage along the track. The carriage was designed with guide shoes and could be hoisted to the surface in either skip compartment without trouble (fig. 4). During blasting operations the clam was tied on the rails and the carriage was hoisted up a few sets to protect it from flying rock. No attempt was made to hoist the carriage and clam together lest the clam catch in the timbers. The track on which the carriage operated was built of extra heavy 6 in. pipe with 1x2 in. strap welded on top for rails. A 1/2x4 in. angle was welded on the bottom of the 6 in. pipe with a 1 in. round rod welded in the angle for a filler and additional strength. The end or cross pieces of the track which kept the track to gauge, were also made of reinforced, heavy 6 in. pipe and were bolted to the long members on which the carriage traveled (fig. 2 and 3). This section of track was used, instead of heavy railroad rails, for two reasons: (1) this section would bend before it snapped and was much safer for the men in the bottom; and (2) it was a better blasting shield, and protected the timbers better, in fact, only five wall plates were broken by blasting in 1926 ft of shaft, although 150 to 225 lb of 40 pct powder was loaded per round, depending on the ground conditions. The swinging track was supported by four 5/s in. hoisting cables anchored to the end plates. There were also four safety cables fastened two to three sets above the carriage, which would catch the carriage if one of the supporting cables should fail for any reason (fig. 7). Clamshell Buckets: Two clams were used, each of 3/s yard capacity, both manufactured by Blaw Knox, Nos. 662 and 663. The No. 663 clam was 4 in. wider and 5 in. shorter than the No. 662, but seemed to dig and load more satisfactorily. It was easier to hoist and lower when it came up for repair. It did not turn over as easily, had less spill

NORRIS, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-For many years the power requirements of breakers designed in the Anthracite. Region have been based on calculations made from indicator diagrams taken during operation, with various sections of machinery idle; these, while giving reasonably accurate figures, gave no intimation of the peak loads which have been shown so clearly in the paper. The high-speed flywheel for breaker rolls is new and shows a remarkable saving in peak power required, besides eliminating the stalling of the rolls from overload. The figures given are so far in advance of anything previously published that they will undoubtedly be used as a basis for future breaker design. It is to be hoped that the authors will continue this investigation and extend their paper by a description of the motors found best suited for this work. WILLIAM KENT, Montclair, N. J.-I notice on p. 187 reference is made to one of the difficulties being the starting torque, and it is proposed to use roller or ball bearings in order to decrease the high starting torque. I suggest that. before the roller or ball bearings are put in, an investigation be made as to the amount of the starting torque, as shown by wattmeter measurements and as to what the starting torque ought to be, theoretically, according to the energy formula; that is, how much starting torque is required to accelerate the rotating mass in a given number of seconds up to full speed. Having secured this information it may be found the amount to be saved by roller bearings is not very great. If it appears that roller bearings will not greatly decrease the starting torque, the next thing to be done is to have a special design of motor in which there is a field that can be made very strong at the start, by the use of extra poles or other means, and the next thing that may be done is to increase the speed from 10,000 r.p.m. to 25,000, which can be done with wire-wound flywheels, especially if the wires are made of vanadium steel.

THERE has been so much misinformation sent out through the newspapers, and I find so few people who are really acquainted with the true facts in regard to the coal strike, that I feel it would be advan-tageous to present the facts as I have been able to gather them. One of the great points that the miners are now mak-ing is the fact that the operators of the central competi-tive field, consisting of the states of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania, have refused to meet them in a joint conference such as has been customary in previous years. There are two reasons why the operators de-clined to hold such a meeting. In the first place, the last time they held a meeting of this kind they were all indicted under the Sherman Act for making an agree-ment in restraint of trade. In the second place, the miners at their convention did not authorize their dele-gates to negotiate a new contract, but instructed them that nothing less than a scale based on the present wage, with the addition that there should be a six-hour day, a five-clay week, time j and a half for over time, and double time for Sundays, would be accepted. These additions would very much increase the cost of coal over the present wage scale. The operators could not consider renewing a contract on the present scale, as it would mean ruin for them, and as the miners were not authorized to negotiate a new scale on a fair basis that would enable the operators to mine coal in competi¬tion, with the open-shop mines the operators did not feel that there was any use in meeting the delegates. Thirty per cent. of the output of bituminous coal comes from the open-shop mines of West Virginia, Alabama and Pennsylvania. During the strike, in 1919, this 30 per cent. was increased to 50 per cent. and it has affected the operations of the union mines to such an extent this year that they have been able to run only 15 to 30 per cent. of their time, while the open shop mines have run from 60 to 80 per cent. as the wages in these mines had been reduced to the 1917 scale.
