Rates of oxidation were studied for levitation-melted samples of Fe-C, Fe-Si, Fe-C-Si, Fe-C-P, Fe-C-Mn, and Fe-C-S alloys oxidized by mixtures of either 5 or 10 pct O2, in helium at several temperatures in the range 1850o to 2050°C. The concentrations of the oxidized elements decreased linearly with time. Mass transport in the gas phase was found to be the rate-controlling step. Ilowever, a mulliple -film model was necessary to account for the flux of iron and manganese vapor counter to the oxygen flow. THE advent of the basic oxygen and spray-refining processes of steelmaking has generated considerable interest in the kinetics of reactions between oxygen-bearing gases and liquid iron alloys. The object of this research was the determination of the role of mass transport in the gas and metal phases and of surface chemical reactions in the overall oxidation process. Of the reactions for elimination of elements dissolved in liquid iron, the oxidation of carbon has been investigated most extensively. Studies by Fuji and Ura,1 Fuji,' and Gunji et a1.,3 done with pilot-scale basic oxygen furnaces, indicated that mass transport of gaseous oxygen was rate controlling when the metal carbon content was greater than 0.15 to 0.30 pct. When the carbon content was less than this critical amount, diffusion of carbon dissolved in the iron was thought to be rate limiting. L. A. Baker et a1.4,5 levitated samples of iron-carbon alloys and oxidized them in CO-CO2, CO-C02-He, and O2-He atmospheres at 1660°C. These investigators found that the metal carbon concentration decreased linearly with time and their samples exploded when the carbon content fell below about 0.8 pct. They concluded that the rate-limiting step was the transfer of oxidant to the gas-metal interface. A model based on this rate-limiting step predicted decarburization rates within a factor of two of those experimentally observed. The explosion of the samples was attributed to a shift in rate-controlling step from gas-phase mass transport to transport of carbon dissolved in the metal. L. A. Baker and R. G. ward6 and R. Baker7 used freely falling droplets to investigate oxidation kinetics. In both papers, the authors speculated that flame fronts may have been partially responsible for the lack of better agreement between experiment and theory. Swisher and Turkdogan8 oxidized liquid iron having an initial carbon content of 0.97 pct with CO-CO2 and CO-C02-Ar mixtures at 1580°C. They concluded that a surface reaction was the rate controlling step. Iron-silicon alloys have been oxidized by R. Baker7 and Filipov and Martynov.9 R. Baker 7 also studied iron-carbon-silicon alloys falling as liquid droplets through oxygen. He found that the rate of both carbon and silicon oxidation varied inversely with the drop radius. When the initial silicon concentration was greater than 6 pct, the samples cooled during their fall. Manganese oxidation has been studied by R. Baker,7 and by Filipov and Martynov.9 ward10 investigated the loss of manganese from liquid iron under vacuum. He found that mass transport of manganese vapor was rate limiting in argon atmospheres of 0.02 torr to 700 torr pressure. Iron-sulfur alloys were desulfurized with H2-He and H2-Ar mixtures by Peters et al.11 A model based on the transport of H2S from the gas-metal interface into the bulk gas gave fair agreement between the predictions of the model and the experimental results. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Essentially, the technique consisted of using helium-oxygen gas mixtures to oxidize levitated samples of liquid binary and ternary iron-base alloys. The fused silica reaction tube is shown in Fig. 1. The coil design is similar to that of L. A. In coursing the ventilating air through a mine it is often necessary to restrict a comparatively open split in order that it may carry exactly the desired quantity of air. Such a restriction is known as a regulator, and usually takes the form of a partition with a hole in it. The quantity of air circulating is controlled by the size of the hole or orifice. For example, it is desired to force a quantity q I cu. ft, per min. through split a (Fig. 1) and the quantity q2 through split b. It requires a pressure of 2 in. water to force the desired quantity through a, and a pressure of 1 in. to force the desired amount through b. The pressure drop between points A and B must be 2 in and a pressure of 1 in. must be destroyed in split b. This is done by inserting a regulator in b, which causes the velocity to increase in the orifice and results in a change from pressure-head to velocity-head. If the air, after passing the orifice, is slowed down in a turbulent manner, all of the velocity-head does not change back into pressure-head, so a permanent loss of static pressure results. A classic formula for computing the area of an orifice to destroy a certain amount of static pressure has been handed down from early days: 0.0004Q a =2 This formula is based on the assumption that all velocity-head in the orifice is "destroyed;" that is, does not reappear again as either velocity-pressure or static pressure. The derivation of the formula is as follows: h = head lost in regulator in fect of air. v = velocity in regulator in fect per second. q = quantity circulating in cubic feet per second. GOLD MOVEMENT ON SURFACE OF AURIFEROUS COPPER WHEN LATTER IS SUBJECTED TO OXIDATION SOME years ago the writer's attention was called to the fact that rolling-mill scales from auriferous copper do not have the gold content proportional to the gold contained in the copper from which they are derived. I So, later, he made a few simple experiments, which are described herewith. In: order to test the gold movement on the changing surface of a copper plate under the influence of oxidation, plates 6 in. by 8 in. by I in. (15.2 cm. by 20.3 cm. by 2.5 cm.) of converter copper, refined, of 99.29 per cent. purity, and leaded copper with a content of 95.65 per cent. copper, were obtained. Ten cuts were made through the thickness of the plates along the longitudinal center and the silver and gold content ascertained in each of the 10 samples in both plates, as shown in the accompanying illustration. The assay results, recorded in Tables 1 and 2, show that the gold distribution is relatively uniform in both plates, while silver has greater variations, especially in the leaded plate. The plates subjected to oxidation were placed in a red-hot muffle for about 2 hr., two small scorifiers being used as supports. Arranged alongside each other, they nearly filled the width of the muffle, and so were practically under equal conditions of heat and draft. The accurate observance of the time was not possible, however, because of other work, but the time of the exposure of each plate in a pair was identical. At the end of each period, each plate was plunged into water and completely freed of scale, which was carefully collected, dried, weighed, and analyzed. Samples of the plates had also been taken of the molten metal and duly analyzed. Table 3 contains the analytical data for the two plates and their several sheets, or layers, of oxide scales. THE magnetic method of prospecting is well suited to determination of faulting in the basement rock. In addition to establishing the horizontal position of the fault, it often furnishes valuable information concerning the depth and amount of faulting. Consider a simple case of a vertical fault, represented in cross-section in Fig. 1. Let A A' represent the plane of observation (ordinarily the surface of the earth), and BB'B"B"' the upper surface of the basement. Assume that the sedimentary rocks are nonmagnetic, so that the magnetic susceptibility of the material above the basement is zero. Let k indicate the susceptibility of the basement rock, c the density contrast between it and the neighboring sedimentary rocks, and the amount of vertical displacement. Fig. 1 shows the material, indicated by cross- hatching, which gives rise to the magnetic anomaly. In most cases it can be assumed that is small compared to the thickness of the sedimentary rocks. The semi-infinite, rectangular slab of rock of susceptibility k, density contrast , and thickness t may then be replaced by a semi-infinite sheet CC' of mass t per unit area at depth 2 (the mean depth of the slab). Nettleton 1 states that this approximation results in an error of less than 2 pct for the computed gravitational field intensity when t is as great as 2/2 and decreases rapidly for smaller values of t. By a theorem of Poisson, the magnetic field intensity can be determined readily from the gravitational field. The theorem states that W = (I/) • (U/i) i1 [1] where W is the magnetic potential associated with the structure, I is the intensity of magnetization which is assumed to have the direction of the inducing field, ? is the constant of gravitation, the density contrast, U the gravitational potential associated with the structure, i the direction of the inducing magnetic field, and i1 a unit vector in that direction. The constitution of the iron-silicon alloys containing from 14 to 33.4 weight per cent silicon has been studied by a number of investigators, whose results have been reviewed in a monograph published by the Engineering Foundation1. In these previous researches, the solubility of silicon in iron was determined by thermal, microscopic or magnetic methods and the compound Fe3Si2 was reported to be stable at temperatures from 0 to approximately 1030' C. This paper describes the results of an X-ray investigation of the solubility of silicon in iron and gives data which prove that the Fe3Si2 phase is unstable below 825" C. In order to obtain the present results on the solubility of silicon in iron, the authors have utilized the lattice constants of the alpha-phase iron-silicon alloys given in a previous publication2, and also some additional data which will subsequently be described. Materials and Methods The alloys used in this investigation are listed in Table 1. They were prepared in 30 or 50-gram ingots by melting specially purified silicon and electrolytic or carbonyl iron in alundum crucibles under a pressure of less than 1 mm. of mercury. The purity of the silicon, electrolytic and carbonyl irons has been given by the authors in previous publications2, 5. The ingots were homogenized in vacuo at approximately 1000" C. for at least 96 hr. and then slowly cooled. The homogenized specimens were ground to powder in a hardened steel mortar. This powder was passed through a 150 or 200-mesh screen and sealed in evacuated quartz, Jena or Pyrex glass tubes and heat-treated as noted in the various tables. Specimens 23A, 24B, 33 and 35 and the specimens heated for one month at 700" C. were quenched by quickly removing the tubes from a horizontal tubular furnace and dropping them into water. The other specimens were quenched by means of a drop-quenching device, which has been described previously3.

A simple disturbance in a gas reservoir travels with a finite velocity which is nearly independent of the amplitude of the disturbance. As a result very complex transients may be set up which seriously affect observation at a well. The time of transient is much longer than commonly supposed. INTRODUCTION A change in pressure at a gas well is not propagated through the reservoir instantaneously but with a definite fin- ite velocity. Knowledge of the period ! of this transient is of value because: 1. Observations of pressure and flow-rate during the transient may affect interpretation of back-pressure tests. 2. Interference effects between wells may be used to determine continuity of formation. 3. Additional information concerning the physical characteris- tics may possibly be deduced from the behavior of a well during the transient. MATHEMATICAL DEVELOPMENT It will be assumed that the well is initially closed in and that the pressure is constant throlughout the reservoir. OgdEN et al.1 and Bumps et al.2 suggested that the solubility of aluminum in a titanium extended to 30 pct.* Sagcl,3 Clark and Terry,4 Anderko et al.,5 Ence and Margolin6 and Saulnier and croutzelles,7 subsequently proposed the existence of an intermetallic compound in the region of 25 pct Al. Although Anderko et al.5 suggested that the structure of this phase, Ti3Al, was of the DO,, (Ni3Sn) type, their conclusion was based only upon the results of a powder photograph that included reflections from ? = 0 to ?= 27° (CuK),some of which were reported to be indistinct. Ence and Margolin,6 referring to a 25 pct alloy (but without indicating whether the figure referred to weight or atomic pct) stated: "The structure of Ti2Al is isomorphous with Ti3Sn DO19, as pointed out by Pietrokowsky". But the point was not proven, because Ence and Margolin did not report values of calculated intensities of Ti2Al with the DO,, structure. In fact, the observed intensities they reported are in poor agreement with the values we calculate for DO19 (see Table I). Saulnier and croutzelle7 concluded, on the basis of electron micrography and microdiffraction studies, that the structure of the 25 pct A1 alloy was ordered hexagonal. Our purpose has been to unequivocally determine the Ti3Al structure. Alloys containing 25 pct Al were prepared from iodide titanium and spectrographic standard aluminum by levitation melting. The levitation chamber was evacuated to 10-6 mm Hg before filling with 99.999 + pct A. After casting, the alloy was chilled to liquid air temperature and crushed to -200 mesh in a percussion mortar. The powder, wrapped in molybdenum foil, was annealed (by induction heating) at 1000 "C for 2 hr in the argon atmosphere of the levitation chamber. No sublimate was seen on the foil or elsewhere, and therefore the assumption is

THE tests here described were made to obtain information regarding costs, efficiency, etc. of baking cores in an oil-fired oven, and two electric ovens, which were installed, early in 1920, in the core room of The Ohio Brass Co. and were used almost continuously during the rest of that year. Operating costs were rather high so a complete test was undertaken early in 1921. The ovens will be referred to as Nos. 1, 2, and 3. Nos. 1 and 2 are electric ovens of different makes while No. 3 is an oil-fired oven made by the firm that made No. 2. The three are equipped with similar ventilating devices. They have full-height doors at front and rear. The cores are placed on iron racks, which are lifted by Cowan trucks and rolled into the ovens through the front doors. When baked, they are removed through the rear doors. Fig. 1 shows the general plan of the electric ovens while Fig. 2 shows the plan of the oil-fired oven. Oven No. 1 is 91 in. (231 cm.) wide, 83 in. (210 cm.) high, and 79 in. (200 cm.) deep, inside measurements. The walls are constructed in, panels about 18 in. (46 cm.) wide and 4 3/16 in. (10.6 cm.) thick, packed with blocks of insulating material and covered with sheet iron. The concrete floor on which the ovens set is 13 in. (33 cm:) thick. A recess about 5 in. (13 cm.) deep was cut in the floor to provide room for the heating units. Channels and plates supported. on I beams serve as&apos; supports for the trucks and racks. The ventilating system consists of a Sirroco No. 1 ½ fan, connected so as to draw air from the top of the-oven or from the room, through damper C, and to deliver it either to the bottom of the oven or to the floor; the delivery is controlled by the vane A. The fan and pipes are covered with ¼ n. (6.3 mm.) asbestos cement lagging.

THE Woman&apos;s Auxiliary now has its own publica-tion, a monthly news letter that is mailed direct to all its members. It is a lively and readable sheet. Any member of the Auxiliary failing to receive it should communicate with Mrs. J. E. Johnson, Jr., 49 Church Lane, Scarsdale, N. Y., and get on the mailing list. The detailed reports of the meetings will hereafter ap-pear in the News Letter rather than in MINING AND METALLURGY. The regular Board meeting held on March 3, with Mrs. Barron presiding, was well attended and the re-ports of the committees, and from local sections, showed a keen interest in the work. of the organization. Steps are being taken to endow a "Mary Young Westervelt Scholarship," libraries are being built up in mining towns, and interesting reunions .are being held by the members in the various local sections. The Auxiliary is filling an important place and doing it well. Women of the families of Institute members not already affili-ated with it would find it pleasant to get in touch.

This paper presents the initial results of a pressure maintenance by water return project in the Lower Pawelek reservoir of the Falls City Field, Karnes County, Southwest Texas. Production is from the Lower Wilcox section at an average depth of 6,030 ft on the downthrown side of a "down to the coast" fault. Of particular interest is that the reservoir oil is high gravity and low viscosity but far undersaturated with gas at the original reservoir pressure and temperature. The early pressure and production history indicated only a partial or limited water drive, and this fact, coupled with the characteristics of the reservoir fluid and artificial lifting problem.. made advisable the water injection program to maintain reservoir pressure. The paper includes a description of the reservoir and reservoir fluids, the pressure and production history, a description of the water injection facilities, and the results of reservoir calculations involving Hurst&apos;s unsteady state flow and the material balance equations for calculation of water influx and prediction of the pressure-production relationship at various rates of withdrawal. The reservoir calculations and initial field results indicate that reservoir pressures in excess of 85 per cent of original pressure can be maintained by control of water injection even at very high rates of production. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to report the initial results of a pressure maintenance by water return program in the Lower Pawelek reservoir, Falls City Field, Karnes County. Texas, and to calculate an empirical relationship between pressure and production in this limited or partial water drive reservoir. Location The Falls City Field (Fig. 1) is located two miles north of the town of Falls City in Karnes County, Texas, and is approximately 50 miles south-southeast of San Antonio on U. S. Highway 181. Discovery and Development The initial block of leases was taken after a surface geological survey identified a major east-west fault and closure on the south or downthrown section. The discovery well, Southern Minerals Corporation&apos;s Joe F. Bartosch 1; was completed at 4,650 ft in the Lower Bartosch sand in December, 1944. Drilling was continuous until December, 1946, and resulted in the discovery of 12 oil reservoirs between 4,600 and 6,050 ft in the Middle and Lower Wilcox formations. These are shown on the cross-section (Fig. 2). As of the current date there are 64 oil wells completed as follows: Southern Gulfshore Magnolia Minerals Oil Petroleum Reservoir Corp. Co. Corp. Both drilling and production of oil decreased in Rumania during 1935. The drilling totaled 1,042,041 ft. and production 61,973,938 bhl., being a decrease of 8.5 and 1.6 per cent, respectively. Wells completed during the year totaled 198, of which 168 were oil wells, compared with 238 and 215, respectively, of 1934. No important discovery was made during the year. The only new field found was Valea Calugareasca, where the Credit Minier completed a small well on the westward plunge of the anticline. Drilling higher on the structure will probably prove the field to be of greater importance than the results of the discovery well indicate. The only other developments of importance were the extension of the Bucsani field, the opening up of a new area on the northeast of the salt at Moreni by Credit Minier and a minor extension of the West Gura Ocnitei field. At Calinesti, on the cast extension of the Moreni field, exploration work continued and a gas well was completed, but oil in commercial quantities is yet to be found.

ALTHOUGH Gaudin1 and more recently Sutherland2 have calculated the probability of collision of a falling mineral particle with a rising bubble, there is no published information concerning the details of the mechanism of attachment of a collector-coated particle to a bubble. During the past year the writer has developed a theory for the mechanism of attachment, which has been substantiated experimentally.&apos; Funds for the investigation and for some of the equipment used have been supplied by the Mines Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota. Motion picture studies of the phenomena involved in the collision between mineral particles and bubbles, such as those of Spedden and Hannan,3 show that the contact can be completed within 0.3 millisec. Formulas developed for rigid bodies have hitherto been used&apos; for the calculation of the motion of bubble and particle, but it is obvious that a bubble cannot be regarded as a rigid body. On the contrary, Spedden and Hannan&apos;s pictures show a great degree of deformation during the collision. The time of attachment was calculated as the time the particle drifted past the bubble. Time of Collision The theory presented in this paper enables calculation of the time of collision; using the concept that the bubble, or more generally, a liquid-air interface, acts as an elastic body. The elasticity, defined as the restoring force on a mechanical deformation, is caused by, the surface tension and is the result of the principle of the minimum of free surface energy. It is well known that an elasticity together with a mass determines a frequency of vibration. The vibrations of jets and drops caused by the elasticity of the interface are known to comply exactly with the classical theory of capillarity.5 However, the vibrations of isolated bubbles, as distinct from foams, have not been investigated previously. The following equation, presented elsewhere,&apos; has been deduced for these frequencies: [3fB = 9.20•&apos;./V•Vn- (n-1) • (n+2) /8[1]] in which fB is the frequency of a harmonic of the bubble in cycles per second, V the volume of the bubble in cc, n a number determining the order of the harmonic, and n = 2 the basic vibration. The first (basic) harmonic describes a change of the spherical bubble to an ellipsoidal bubble. The higher harmonics are more complicated, for the circumference of the bubble is divided approximately into as many parts&apos; as the order of the harmonic. As an example, Spedden and Hannan&apos;s published motion picture of, a vibrating bubble corresponds to the sixth harmonic. Eq 1 shows that only the first and third harmonics are simple multiples (1 and 3), all the others being irrational fractions of the basic frequency. This means that the shape of the vibration can change with time and is in general unsymmetric in respect to the time axis. Such conditions prevail when there is a distributed elasticity or mass, as in the case of vibrating membranes or rods. The constant 9.20 is valid for water at room temperature, but a general solution involving the physical constants of the liquid has not been found. The case of the floating particle is much easier to treat I than that of the bubble. It can be assumed that the elasticity is caused exclusively by the interface and that the mass is concentrated in the particle together with some adhering water. The following expression for the frequency of a system, of one degree of freedom can be applied: [1E/m[2] fP = 27] Here f, is the frequency of the particle vibration in cycles per second, E the elasticity in dynes per cm, and m the mass in grams. The purpose of this article is not only to describe the plant and method of cyaniding the Treadwell concentrates, but to present some of the results of the experimental work obtained in the past three years for the Alaska-Treadwell Qold Mining Co., at Douglas Island, Alaska, under the direction of F. W. Bradley, Consulting Engineer, and Robert A. Kinzie, General Superintendent, of the affiliated companies. THE work here described had for its purpose the procuring of data from which some quantitative estimate might be made of the results obtainable by using oxygen-enriched air in roasting zinc ores on a commercial scale. The principal metallurgical advantages of using enriched air in roasting zinc ores would be: 1. The rate of roasting would be increased, with consequent gain in the capacity of the roasting furnace. 2. As less air would be required for roasting, the volume of hot gases leaving the furnace and the heat carried out of the furnace as sensible heat in these gases would be less per ton of ore roasted; partly for this reason and partly because of the increased quantity of heat generated in the furnace by the larger amount of ore that could be roasted, the consumption of fuel by the furnace would be lessened; and by the use of air sufficiently enriched with oxygen the necessity of using fuel might be entirely obviated. 3. Roaster gas having a higher SO2 content could be produced; this would make possible greater capacity and more economical operation of the sulfuric-acid plant. Certain phases of the application of enriched air to roasting can be worked out only by experimenting with a furnace of commercial, or at least semicommercial, size. It is shown that the heat of solution of nitrogen in liquid-iron alloys is Proportional to the interaction coefficient. This proportionality forms the basis for a method of predicting nilrogen solubility at any temperature when the interaction coefficient is knoun at 1600°C ov when the solubility is known at some one temperature. A method for predicting the solubility of nitrogen in liquid steels, including alloy steels, was proposed some years ago by Langenberg.&apos; Since the data available at that time were restricted to temperatures of about 1600°C, his predictions were similarly restricted. More recently, Nelssonz devised an approximate method for estimating nitrogen solubilities at higher temperatures. It is the purpose of the present paper to present a method by which the solubility of nitrogen at any temperature within the steelmaking range may be predicted from the known interaction coefficients at 1600°C. Nitrogen in iron and in all of the alloys to be considered here is known to obey Sieverts&apos; Law; hence the activity of nitrogen in an alloy of fixed composition is proportional to its concentration, here expressed in weight percent. The activity of nitrogen is defined as equal to its weight percent in the binary Fe-N solution at any temperature. Its activity coefficient in any alloy is the comparison being made at equal values of T and PN2. In all alloys the activity coefficient changes with composition, log fN being a linear function of the percent of alloying element at low concentrations. In the following calculations the alloy compositions are restricted to those in which this linear relation is exhibited. For most systems this is a fairly wide range, for example up to 5 pct V and to 10 pct Cr or Ni. For this composition range. complex alloy is the same as that in the Fe-N-j ternary solution. Langenberg&apos;s method of prediction was based on Eq. [3], the values of log fN for various additions being taken from a graph. Instead of using the simple addition indicated in Eq. [3], he used a more complex method suggested for Fe-S-j alloys by Morris and Buehl.3 For the composition ranges in which Eq. [2] is valid the two methods are equivalent. Nelson extended the prediction to other temperatures on the assumption that logfN is inversely proportional to absolute temperature. It may be shown that inverse proportionality would result if the partial molal entropy of nitrogen were unaffected by addition of the alloy element, an assumption which Nelson designated as a "regular" solution. It has been shown recently by the authors4 that this assumption is not a good approximation. The heat of solution of nitrogen (N2) in an alloy may be obtained if the solubility is known as a function of temperature. Measurements of this nature have been reported recently by Beer5 for Fe-Mn alloys, by Nelsson2 for Fe-C, by El Tayeb and parlee6 for Fe-V, and by Pehlke and Elliott7 for many alloys embracing a wide range of compositions. In connection with the work of the last named authors it is noted that their Fig. 22 gives the heat effect per half mole rather than per mole of N2. In using their data we have shifted some of their values slightly by using the best straight line in preference to their curve. THE ORIGINAL HUDSON RIVER TUNNEL. NOT quite forty years ago a man of uncommon character entered New York. He had several hundred thousand dollars earned by railroad building in the Nest. He was not an engineer, but he had ideas of engineering work which he was destined to prove correct.. He introduced new ways of tunneling, but his plans had only one distinguishing feature-they were simply interesting as showing how such work could be done; they added nothing to the science, have never been used since his clay, and never will be used again. Engineers of repute ridiculed his proposition ; he was an Ishmael in the profession. But if engineers looked askance at him, he certainly returned their contempt in the heartiest fashion, and had no hesitancy about expressing his views of them individually and collectively. This worked to. his disadvantage when he afterward tried to raise the means to go on with the work. He found that the opinion of engineers was respected by financiers, and that money would not flow contrary to their advice. While his conception of large constructions was distinguishingly original, much more marked was his method of demonstrating the feasibility of, his schemes. In the present clays of great undertakings it is the custom to make the other man pay for the experiments. But the man from the West had other notions of how the thing ought to be done. Having wonderful confidence in his own ability and in his perception of the task before him, he used up all his own money before seeking outside assistance. The characteristics of successful heap and dump leach operations are first reviewed in a general sense. Then attention is focussed on solution management as the key operating parameter in leaching. The first part of this study includes a detailed conceptual analysis of fluid flow. This identifies the relationships between the flow parameters and the chemical and physical properties of the rock. Then these relationships are extended to practical systems in order to establish optimum application rates and solution distribution methods for heaps and dumps. The study shows that there is a maximum effective application rate, qmax, that can be used without causing solution short circuiting. This rate is a function of the minimum permeability in the heap or dump. The expression for qmax is qmax (gal/ft2/hr)[~]0.9 k (darcies). Here k is the appropriate permeability coefficient. Using this equation, qmax is found to be on the order of 1 gal/ft2/hr (4 cm/hr) for a typical heap or dump leach operation.

The solubilities of copper and gold in silicon and germanium have been determined by equilibration of the solid semiconductors with coexisting liquidus phases. The experimental results were combined with estimated activity coefficients of the liquidus alloys to determine the following partial molar enthalpies and excess entropies of solution for the systems: Solubility measurements were also carried out below the eutectic temperature of the copper-silicon system. The partial molar enthalpy and excess entropy of copper in silicon with respect to Cu3Si were determined to be 40.2 ±0.5 kcal per mole and 9.7 i 0.5 cal per mole — OK, respectively. It has been dentonstrated that nu-cleation and growth of intermediate compounds are retarded in copper-silicon diffusion couples. This points out the dangers of determining equilibrium solubilities by dijjusion methods.
