The terms "cable bolting," "extended ground support," and "grouted cable" are synonymous, and they have been popping up with much more regularity in the mining engineer s vocabulary. In simplest terms, lengths of u itensioned cable up to 18.3 m (60 ft) are grouted in drill holes prior to mining. This permits radical departures from mining practices that rely on conventional rock reinforcement. For example, by placing a pattern of cable bolts in the back of an open stope, ore can be mined in successive slices. After each slice is taken the protruding cable; are simply cut off and mining proceeds. When about 4.6 m (15 ft) of reinforced back remains, a crew places a new par tern of cable bolts in the ore.

A 6-ft diam core drilling machine has successfully completed seven mine shafts in Virginia and West Virginia to depths as great as 465 ft. There is no practical depth limitation to this new system-a potential method in formations not easily penetrated with other large-scale drilling programs-and higher penetration rates and larger diameters are possible in some formations already being drilled successfully by other methods. The core barrel on the machine is fitted with rolling cutters such as those used on oil field rotary bits, so that less torque is required than with other large- scale drilling systems. The core is made with a wider kerf than is achieved with other coring methods, providing more working room for core drilling.

ABOUT 15 varieties, or modifications, of the best magnesium available were prepared and subjected to etching tests, then examined for microstructure. Of the 30-odd etching reagents that were tried, nearly half, mostly ammonium salts, etched the metal satisfactorily. The surfacing and etching of magnesium is shown to be a very simple and quick operation. The density and hardness of magnesium were determined. The most interesting new observations relate to the finding of the hexagonal etch figures, the crystal laminations, and the fact that the metal is plastic, cold, when restrained or quickly deformed. Under slowly applied pressure cold metal deforms slightly, then shears to fracture without plastic flow: The chief structural features of magnesium are presented in two reduced photographs and 30 photomicrographs.

If the ordinary wet method be attempted for silver-bullion containing tin, much trouble is experienced, varying with the amount of tin present. Even with a percentage as low as 0.05, the end-point is masked by a persistent turbidity, while with amounts ranging from 0.5 per cent. upward, the determination of the exact end-point is impossible, owing to the finely divided or colloidal metastannic acid resisting all efforts to cause it to settle, or to give a clear supernatant liquid. The object of the following experiments was to seek a remedy for these difficulties, and to find the conditions whereby the Gay Lussac method might be applied directly to these bullions. Material containing tin is met with frequently in bullion from Mexico or Bolivia; and tin is carried (sometimes in large quantities) in jewelers' sweeps. 1. A bullion was prepared containing Ag, 74; Cu, 25; and Sn, 1 per cent. A weighed amount was treated by the humid assay-method as if it were an ordinary bullion free from tin. Thermal expansions and heats of reaction of three typical sandstones were measured in the temperature range of 25°to 1,000°C. The significance of these data in subsurface heat-transfer calculations is discussed. Linear thermal expansions were measured both parallel and perpendicular to the bedding planes. Volume expansions are reported as the perpendicular expansion plus two times the parallel expansion. Expansion behavior of the sandstones was found to be controlled by the expansion characteristics of the quartz content. Differential expansion of the quartz grains and other minerals included in the sandstones caused permanent deformation of the heated samples after they were cooled to room temperature. Structural damage resulting from heating is probably an important cause of the reduction of thermal conductivity of heated samples. Measurements of heats of reaction were based on the known heat required for a- quartz inversion. Thermal reactions, which probably include deby-droxylation of clay minerals and decomposition of carbonate minerals contained within the samples, were found to require more than one-fourth of the amount of heat necessary to raise the temperature of the rock alone. In shales and limestones, the reaction heat could be substantially greater than that required from specific heat considerations alone. INTRODUCTION In earlier work, l-3 methods of measuring thermal properties were developed and thermal data for several sedimentary-rock types were reported. Data included thermal conductivity, specific heat and thermal diffusivity. In addition, calculations of heat transfer in subsurface formations may require data on the thermal-expansion characteristics of rock and the heats of reaction of mineral constituents. Thermal expansion of rocks is relatively small in magnitucle and, from the standpoint of change in bulk density, has only minor effects on heat-transfer cliaracteristics. Thermal-expansion behavior, however, may have significant effects on the structure of rocks. Differential expansion of different minerals and along different crystal-lographic axes may result in structural damage which could effectively reduce the thermal conductivity of the rock. Many mineral constituents of sedimentary rocks undergo phase or related changes when heated to sufficiently high temperatures. Although some of these reactions (such as the a-ß quartz inversion) are reversible and the heat absorbed is returned to the system upon cooling, many of the major reactions are irreversible. Through certain temperature ranges, the additional heat energy required to complete the reactions may be nearly as great as that necessary to raise the temperature of the rock in the absence of thermal reactions. If the heat requirements for these reactions are not considered, serious errors in heat-transfer calculations may result. Thermal-tzxpansion and thermal-reaction data have been obtained for three typical sandstones. Methods of measurement and results obtained are reported and discussed in the following. THERMAL EXPANSION OF SANDSTONES The linear expansions of three outcrop sandstones (Bandera, Berea and Boise) have been measured in the temptbratue range of 25° to 1,000° C. Expansion measurements were made in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the bedding. The differential expansion apparatus used is that described by Mitoff and Pask.4 The test sample is heated in an electric furnace with a temperature rise of 6°C/minute. The lengthening of the samples upon heating is compared with the small and known expansion of a fused silica rod. The change in length is transmitted to an X-Y recorder by means of a Statham transducer. A maximum error of ± 1.5 per cent has been obtained with this apparatus

THE piping and segregation of ingots of steel is a comprehensive subject, and must be studied in reference to the different grades of soft, medium, and hard steel, rather than to discuss it in a general manner, as though applicable to all grades. Rail steel, however, will receive the most consideration in this paper, for the wheel-loads of the motive pourer and rolling stock have doubled from 1890 to 1910. Steel rails and tires which were efficient under the light loads, became less serviceable under the double wheel-loads, quadrupled tonnage, and higher speeds. Bessemer Steel. Bessemer steel of froth 0.10 to 0.15 per cent. of carbon, for splice-bars, spikes, and tie-plates, rises in setting, and is cast in bottle-mouthed molds, which must be capped to prevent an over-flow from the top. This grade of steel rises in the molds and makes a longer ingot than the volume of molten steel when first teemed. The ingots which are allowed to cool and then cut open, show, particularly in the upper part, large occluded blow-holes, and when they are Dot oxidized or do not contain foreign matter, weld more or less completely when the steel is rolled or forged above 1,100° C., and it :is in this way that the blow-holes are closed it the low-carbon steels.

THE degree to which our mineral requirements are being met by mining leaner, more complex or more remote deposits is indicated by developments during 1953. Heavy capital investment, skilled technical advice, planning, and able execution are requirements for the typical venture. Producers, faced with rising costs and with softer prices, are seeking improved mining and recovery. Developments in production of iron ore are typical of the course being followed in metal and nonmetal mining. Iron ore development in the U. S. is concentrated on the spectacular work with Lake Superior taconite, while in Canada new production is expected from Labrador and output from Steep Rock, Algoma, and Newfoundland is being increased. Shipment of iron will soon be made from Venezuela.

Results of a pilot operation in the Carlsbad Basin are discussed. After hydrafracing between wells, a block of potash was removed by solution techniques. The distance between frac wells was about 200 ft, the thickness of potash mineralization, 5 ft. By proper manipulation, a feed of concentrate brine was obtained. The ex-periment showed that the thin-bedded potash could be removed by the solution techniques. The details of well construction, method of operation, and removal rates are discussed. Continental Oil Co.'s laboratory research on the fundamentals of potash solution mining has been expanded by means of a series of field tests, and subjects such as well completion and hydraulic fracturing were added to the investigation. Both single-well and multi-well systems were studied in the field work. Discussion Background: The current paper discusses one field test in which potash was solution mined by a two-well system from a thin sylvinite zone. The potential economic value of solution mining evolves from (1) the use of drilled holes and solution techniques instead of excavated shafts and caverns and (2) the ability to mine both land and marine deposits through any type of overburden geology and below conventional mining depths. Recent interest has been focused on potash' and other soluble minerals, such as trona. Solution extraction minerals, such as copper and uranium, are also worthy of important consideration. In addition, many of the techniques are directly applicable to the construction of horizontal underground storage carverns in salt. There are two general approaches to potash solution mining. The first is to mine on a single-well basis, in which the same well bore is used for both injection and production. This method is slow, and the areal extent may be quite limited in other than very thick ore zones. The second, and the preferred approach, is to mine on a multi-well basis in which the solvent is circulated between wells. This technique, if applied in a manner which allows the ore zone to be mined from the bottom upward, results in nearly all the solution taking place from the cavern roof. Salt removal rates, therefore, are very much higher than from a single-well system.l Wells can be interconnected into a multi-well pattern by several means. One is to join single-well caverns in the lower part of an ore zone. Another is to use the hydraulic fracturing techniques developed in the oil fields.' We preferred the fracture approach because of its potential for creating the greatest area of salt exposure. Test Site Description: The field tests were conducted in New Mexico's Carlsbad Basin, where the potash deposits are flat and uniform over reasonable distances. Here, 12 potash zones are present in the massive Salado Salt section. The specific target was the Third Ore Zone which is about 4 ft thick at our location and about 1150 ft deep. The test pattern was designed in the shape of an equilateral triangle with a fourth well located in the center, 200 ft from each of the vertex wells. This configuration allowed the ore zone to be hydraulically fractured from the center well with good assurance that the fracture would intersect the bore of at least one outside well. Several multi-well test patterns would be available if the fracture connected all wells. Well Completion: Surface casing was set in the top of the Salado Salt at 600 ft to shut off water flows from the surface sands, and the salt section was drilled and diamond-cored to a point below the Third Ore Zone. A drilling fluid made of diesel oil with a small amount of emulsified water was used to drill and core the salt. This fluid was highly successful in preventing enlargement of the drilled hole and in promoting good core recovery. The three outside wells were completed by setting 51/2-in. casing at the base of a streak of anhydrite about 20 ft above the ore zone. Pipe was set high so that the intersection point of the fracture could be detected even if the fracture migrated above the ore zone as it progressed outward from the center well. The center well itself was completed by cementing 51/2-in. casing through the Third Ore Zone. Cement bond logs run on the center well have shown excellent bonding. Fracturing Practice: A mechanical tool was used to cut a notch through the casing and into the salt at a point about 1 ft below the ore zone in the center well. The purpose of this notch was to fix the point of fracture entry into the salt. The fracturing was done with water at injection rtaes as high as 30 bbl per min. The salt parted at 1450 psi; and it required only 5 min for the fracture to reach the well which was 200 ft to the south. It took about 5 min more to reach the other two wells. Caliper surveys were run to locate the point of fracture entry in the three outside wells. The fracture appears to have drifted downward slightly, entering the outside wells at the top of a streak of carnallite 8 or 9 ft below the ore zone. A cross section of the wells selected for the multi-well test is shown in Fig. 1. The figure includes KC1 values based on core analysis and the trace of the fracture plane between the wells.

Caving offers the lowest cost per ton of ally large-scale mining method, but its successful application demands an ore body that conforms to several rigid requirements. The deposit must be of wide areal extent, massive and not spotty in ore values, and insensitive to ore dilution. It must also be a rock mass that breaks up readily. There are only three active caving operations in the US-Climax, Henderson, and San Manuel-but caving methods have recently-taken on new importance as deeper, lower grade mineral occurrences and ore bodies are found. These deposits are too deep for surface mining methods, and too low grade to support any type of underground mining except a bulk method such as caving.

measurements of the anisotropy in Young's modulus produced in copper by rolling 95 pct reduction in thickness below room temperature have been carried out in order to study the dependence of the texture on rolling temperature. The results clearly show the transition from a copper-type texture to a brass-type texture as the temperature of rolling is lowered. The intermediate textures observed can be described very well as a simple mixture of the two terminal textures. These results cormbined with other texture measurements make possible afresh review of the experimental facts velating to rolling textures in fee metals and, as a consequence, a critical examination of the current theories is presented. PREVIOUS experiments have shown that the transition from the copper- to the brass-type rolling texture is clearly displayed and can be quantitatively analyzed by measurements of the anisotropy of Young's modulus.' Application of this method to the Cu-Zn alloy system showed that the description of the texture transition as a gradual rotation of the grains from the orientation characteristic of the copper texture to the {110}(112) texture of brass2 was inconsistent with the data. Instead, the data suggested that the texture within the transition region could be described as a simple mixture of the two terminal textures.5 Unfortunately, it was difficult to establish this point conclusively because of the inadequacy of corrections for the composition dependence of the single-crystal elastic constants. Since a rigorous establishment of the nature of this texture transition is essential to our understanding of the formation of rolling textures in fee metals, it is clearly important to undertake an investigation in which the composition dependence of the elastic constants would not enter. A suitable composition-independent texture transition is provided by the well-established variation in the rolling texture of copper with rolling temperature. This temperature-dependent texture transformation has been studied by smallman' in several fee alloys and by Müller5 and others"' in copper. They observed that the texture characteristic of copper rolled at room temperature changed to a brass-type texture when the rolling temperature was lowered to 77°K. Although it is not possible to decide unequivocally from the published pole figures whether or not the 77°K rolling texture of copper is entirely of the brass type,' this complication does not affect the main purpose of the present investigation. In addition to establishing the nature of the texture within the transition region, the modulus data should also provide a determination of the temperature at which the transition occurs as well as the temperature range over which the transition extends. This information when combined with the modulus data on Cu-Zn alloys would then provide a considerable body of new information on textures in fee metals. Since these modulus results and the data obtained from pole-figure studies must be internally consistent, it is appropriate to compile a brief summary of the experimental observations based on all available methods rather than on the pole-figure data alone as has been done in the past. The primary purpose of such a summary would be to yield a more precise definition of the experimental facts on the rolling textures of fee metals, and thus greatly facilitate our evaluation of various proposed theories in this field. The final section of this paper is devoted to this compilation of consistent, experimental facts and their application to the various theories. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two 18-lb ingots of cathode copper of 99.99 pct purity were induction-melted under a nitrogen atmosphere in a graphite crucible and chill-cast into a steel mold. The ingots were repeatedly cold-rolled and annealed (I hr at 500°C) into slabs about 1 1/8 in. thick. Blocks 3 1/4 in. wide, 2 1/4 in. long, and 1.000 in. thick were machined from each slab. The rolling schedule used was the same as in the previous investigation1 and the final thickness of the sheet was 0.050 in. with a rolling reduction of thickness of 95 pct instead of 97.5 pct as in the previous work.' The compositions and temperatures of the cold baths used for the low-temperature rolling were as shown in Table I. After each pass the rolled strip was immediately immersed in the cold bath for about 1 min or until the bubbling of the bath had subsided. The modulus data were taken within 2 hr after the rolled strip was warmed to room temperature for the first time, so that effects due to recrystallization were minimized. The modulus specimens were in the shape of flat bars, 3 in. long, 4 in. wide, and 0.050 in. thick, cut with their long dimensions oriented at 15-deg intervals between the rolling direction and the transverse direction. The values of Young's modulus were deduced from measurements of the frequency at which these long narrow bars were set into longitudinal, resonant vibration as previously described.9 To excite the mechanical vibrations in the specimen, an electromagnetic drive similar to that employed by Thompson and lass" was used. Man has always felt more comfortable breaking his life into categories or classifications. An otherwise bewildering life somehow becomes easier to bear when divided into neat measurable sections, each of which is fitted into its proper niche. It seems likely that the world's first economic geologist, when faced with the world's first two ore bodies, started his career by classifying them. Early on, he divided his ore bodies into those born of water, of fire, and of air. In retrospect this threefold classification was probably about as useful as the more complex ones that followed. This division of ore bodies probably did not help him in his search for new deposits, but it made him feel more secure in dealing with those already known.

Dry grinding without balls is feature of this mill now in use in three countries on two continents. Materials being ground commercially include iron ore, gold ore, asbestos rock, and slag. New large beneficiation plants have been using an almost standardized crushing and grinding flowsheet. Typically a primary gyratory is followed by several stages of fine crushing and grinding is often carried out in a rod mill operating ahead of one or more ball mills. The clearly labeled trend is to an increasing number of stages with a decreased reduction ratio per machine. Current Aerofall mill installations represent a complete reversal of this trend-one mill replaces the several stages of crushing and grinding a more conventional flowsheet would call for.

It was a colossal mistake on the part of certain of our statesmen in the past which led to the severing of the interests of the two countries which, by the greatest of all bonds-Nature-were meant to be one. However, that is past, and a new book is opened, one full of promise for the world's future. I should imagine that outside the Kaiser-Junker classes, even the Hun himself would prefer to be under Anglo-Saxon laws and customs rather than his own. Perhaps, the best way to begin is to report on what went on at the SME Board of Directors Meeting in St. Louis on October 20. This won't be a chronological report, and I shall take time to comment on some of the items we cover as we go along. You should be encouraged to know that your Directors take their duties seriously. Of the 21 current Directors, 19 were present, and three of the new 1971 Directors came to observe what goes on at an SME Board Meeting.

Mathematical considerations of green ball growth in a balling device by the mechanisms of layering new feed onto seed or recycle pellets are presented. An experimental procedure was developed for investigating the agglomerate growth by layering in which the addition of feed to a batch of seed pellets was made cyclically. Using this procedure, the layering growth mode under partial feed consumption and no seed generation conditions was investigated experimentally in a laboratory balling drum as a function of such operating variables as moisture content of the material, feed rate, and the size distribution of the seed pellets. The experimental results were analyzed in the context of the model equations and the layering growth constant was estimated as a function of the operating variables.

Investors and mining companies in the U. S. have recently shown increased interest in the Union of South Africa. This has been sparked partially by the founding in the U. S. of a large investment trust which will hold substantial shares in many of the leading gold and uranium producers. The average U. S, mining man's judgment of the Union, however, may be somewhat clouded by recent headline news. We are inclined to take a strong dislike to the stern measures of the present Union government with regard to its native majority. Others possibly think of South Africa in krms of a British colony which, under pressure of rising African nationalism, must eventually be abandoned. These concepts frequently suffer for lack of precise information.

A Discussion at a meeting of the New York Section, Dec. 2, 1914 D. H. BROWNE.-If 35 years ago we had met to discuss the subject that is before us to-night, the criticism that we must all be mad or we would not be here at all would have been perfectly applicable. No group of men would have come together a generation ago to discuss the subject of smelting ores without extraneous fuel, or largely by the oxidation of their own impurities, without incurring the imputation of being crazy. But metallurgy, like all other branches of human industry, progresses by idealism. In every generation there are old men who see visions and young men who dream dreams. Thirty-five years ago John Hollway conceived the idea that in the Rio Tinto ore the sulphur and iron, if properly oxidized, could be made to produce heat enough to carry on the smelting of the ores. He saw the vision. Twenty-five years ago Mr. Austin, of Montana, took out a patent on a furnace in which to carry out Hollway's ideas. He dreamed the dream. Twenty years ago a man working in Montana grasped the possibilities of this idea. To him has been given that inexpressible pleasure which comes from realizing the idea and making the concept concrete. Gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to introduce to you the man who made the ideal real, Robert Sticht, of Tasmania. ROBERT C. STICHT, Queenstown, Tasmania.-I find it extremely difficult to act up, in the smallest degree, to the enconium passed upon me by Mr. Browne. It is true it has been my good fortune to be able to put some sort of method into the "madness" of 25 years ago; but I am not the originator of the idea, nor the only one who has carried it out. Mr. Browne mentioned the originator, who undoubtedly is Mr. Hollway. He also mentioned Mr. Austin, who gave the first instigation to pyrite smelting as now practiced. As against both of these men I was fortunate enough to be able to command the necessary natural resources to carry out the idea continuously in a practical way, so as to make it permanently possible.

The object of this paper is to describe an application of the crosscut system of mining, as carried on in the Cabezas del Pasto mine, one of the copper-mines in the sooth of Spain. The system is not new; but it is not very generally adopted. It offers, however, decided advantages over other systems more in use; especially where the ore is found in large masses or wide lodes, as it allows the extraction of all the ore without leaving any pillars or roofs. A somewhat detailed description of the various operations and costs of working may not only be interesting, but may possibly lead to a more general adoption of this method in cases where at present the pillar-andstall system is preferred. The principal features of the copper-lodes in the south of Spain and Portugal are the following: They are nearly all lenticular masses of great lateral dimensions and unascertained depth; their direction is approximately east-west, and their dip towards north. Some are contact-lodes, having slate on the hanging-wall and porphyry on the foot-wall; others are imbedded in porphyry, and others again are imbedded in clay-slate. The upper portion of these lodes consists of " gossan," a siliceous peroxide of iron, mixed with more or less clay. The depth to which the gossan goes down varies in different localities, from 40 feet to 120 feet, and more. Below the gossan is found the iron pyrites, with about 2 to 3 per cent of copper. The gossan is generally admitted to be the result of the decomposition of the pyrites, the copper rendered soluble, filtering into the underlying layers of undecomposed ore, and enriching the ore below the gossan above the general average. Very rich pockets and streaks of ore, containing sometimes 10 per cent of copper and more, are often found in the upper portions of the lodes. There is now in use at the mines of the Chateaugay Ore and Iron Co., at Lyon Mountain, New York, an ore-concentrating machine or jig, which, in view of the increasing attention given to the subject of concentrating lean ores of iron, seems worthy of notice. This Conkling Jig, as it is called, is not entirely unknown, having been used at several places with more or less success; but as yet, I believe, no drawings of it or records of its work have found a place in print. Although the jig will be found to be merely an adaptation of old forms, there are several points which deserve attention, particularly the method of central discharge, of freeing the bearings from grit, and the rotation of the sieve or screen. The ore-body at Lyon Mountain consists of a bed of rather compact, granular magnetite, occurring in a gueiss formation. The side walls of the ore-body are not sharply defined, the ore 011 either side becoming gradually poorer as the distance from the central point of the body increases. It is this lean ore, which, before the introduction of the jigs, was thrown away as waste, that is now concentrated. The material treated conseqnently consists of magnetite, intermixed with the component parts of gneiss, viz. quartz, felspar, hornblende, and mica. Grains of trap also form part of this material. These come from dykes of trap, which cross the ore-body at intervals. The ore which is to be concentrated usually contains from 30 to 40 per cent. of metallic iron. It is first crushed to the size of two inches, or less, by two large Blake crushers. The material from these crushers passes by a shute lined with screens, having holes 2 inches in diameter, to a second set of four crushers, set so as to close to one inch. The product from this set of crushers, together with that which passes through the screens in the shute, is then taken by an elevator to the top of the mill, and passed through a revolving screen, perforated with ) inch holes.
