It is known that austenitic chromium-nickel steels that have free carbide in the grain boundaries are subject to intergranu-lar corrosion. It is difficult to detect such a susceptible condition in a fabricated article because present test methods require a sample section for examination and in most cases this is difficult to obtain. The question of the nature and prevention of intergranular corrosion in austenitic stainless steels has been ably discussed by Bain and co-workers1-3 and by other investigator4-10 The present methods of study subject samples to corrosive conditions in such reagents as the Strauss solution, a mixture of copper sulphate and sulphuric acid. Such tests usually require at least 72 hr. to run. Various methods of measuring the degree of sensitization have been employed, such as the measurement of electrical resistivity, magnetic measuremerits, measurement of the degree of cracking produced on bending over a malldrel, and microscopic studies. The detection of carbides at the grain boundaries by metallographic polishing and etching methods is tedious and requires a skilled operator. A recent report on such methods of carbide detection is given by the American Society for Testing Materials Subcommittee VI of Committee A.-1011 and by Arness.12 The present investigation was undertaken to develop a simple test procedure for detecting carbide precipitation or susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. The test is designed for use in the plant and for the testing of fabricated structures. Carbide precipitation, the factor leading to susceptibility to corrosion, is produced by heating the alloy in the temperature range 800° to 1600°F., as in welding, in improper annealing or in service where such temperatures are met. The connection between such precipitation and susceptibility to corrosion has been thoroughly discussed, as has been the use of stabilizing addition elements to prevent precipitation. Experimental Method A small area of the steel under test is subjected to an anodic treatment in a cell that can be 'lamped Onto a a Or an actual structure. The cell and electrical circuit used are illustrated in Fig. I. The cell C is lead, joined to the steel plate D and insulated from it by a short piece of rubber tubing E. The cell is forced tightly against the steel plate by a spring Or clamping device. The seal formed by the rubber against the steel plate is sufficient to retain the liquid bath inside the cell. The spot treated can be made any shape desired, depending on the shape of the rubber gasket. The cell illustrated polishes a circular spot about 3/8- diameter' The bath consists of 60 per cent (by weight) sulphuric acid to which is added 5 ml. per liter of Glycyrrhiza extract (U.S.P.). A dilatometric determination of the a + ß region temperature limits was performed on vacuum melted Zircaloy-2. The temperature of transformation for a-a+ß and a+ß — ß on heating and cooling as a function of rate of heating and heat treating history was studied. The limits were found to be 815° to 830°C to 975° to 995°C on heating and from 960° to 930°C to 785° to 770°C on cooling. A 5° to 15°C increase was observed for a- a + ß with increased rate of heating and a 20° to 30°C decrease for ß - a + ß with increased rate of cooling. 1 HE transformation temperature for pure zirconium has been determined by many investigators1-5 using metallography, electrical resistivity measurements, and dilatometry. The effect of the rate of cooling on the transformation temperature of zirconium has been studied by Hayes and Kaufmann6 and Duwez,7 and the effect of alloying elements by pfei18 and McGeary.13 Since the development of Zircaloy-2, the limits of the a + ß region for that alloy have been also determined. The first reported temperature for the a — a + a transformation in Zircaloy-2 was 900°C and for a + ß - ß 1000C Subsequent studies by Picklesimer and damson" indicated the beginning of the transformation at 810°C, and the metallographic study by the Technology Group of the Special Materials Section at the Westinghouse Bettis plant1' suggested that 820°to 830°C is the temperature of transformation. The dilatometric investigation by the latter group yielded 830°C for the beginning of the transformation. Thomas and Forscher12 set the beginning of the transformation at 900 °C on heating and the end of the transformation at 870°C on cooling. Tarnish films on some of the common metals (particularly on copper and silver) have been of much scientific and commercial concern for a long time, but before the development of the electrical method1 of measuring film thicknesses there was no satisfactory quantitative approach by which to study the separate parts of these complex films. This method has been adapted to the measurement of duplex (cuprous-cupric) oxide films on copper.2 In the present work it has been used to measure tarnish films on copper when they were mixtures of cuprous oxide and cuprous sulphide, and also when they contained cuprous oxide, cupric oxide and cuprous sulphide, each component part being measured at a different potential value. Oxide-coated copper specimens, prepared by heating copper in air at chosen temperatures for given periods, were exposed to moist hydrogen sulphide in air to forml the various oxide-sulphide films studied. The comparative resistances afforded by (I) different thicknesses of oxide films, and also (2) equal thicknesses of oxide and sulphide films, against severe attacks of hydrogen sulphide were measured. The electrical method requires that the time be observed for the cathodic reduction of each part of the film substance, and these respective time values multiplied by the constant current give the corresponding quantities of electricity expended. Then each millicoulomb per square centimeter represents a film thickness of M X 108____ 2DX 96,494 X 103 where M is weight of oxide (or sulphide) giving one gram-atom of oxygen (or sulphur) for cathodic reduction, D is density of the oxide (or sulphide) and t is the thickness in Angstrom units per millicoulomb per square centimeter. The value of t for cuprous sulphide (cubical) is 14.27, and is obtained by substituting 5.78 for D and 159.20 for M in equation a. Previous values hf t for cuprous and cupric oxides (12.36 and 6.39, respectively) were used in the present work.

(communication to the Secretary*) :-Mr. Dilworth's formulas and tables are of course correct, and the extinction will occur as calculated, provided the money periodically set aside for sinking-fund be really invested. and the interest compounded as assumed in the calculation. Actually, in almost all cases, such funds are used "in the business," in which case, in addition to the periodical charges for principal of the fund, additional charges must be made at the end of each period to cover the interest and compound interest on previous charges. The periodical charge for sinking-fund thus becomes a varying and continually increasing one until the date of extinction. On many accounts it seems more natural and convenient to make the extinction by a fixed periodical charge under the legal rule for partial payments, namely, that each payment should apply first to the interest due at the date of payment;: and any remainder, after this is satisfied, be deducted from the principal before the interest for the next period is calculated. RCENTLY, in investigating the high-temperature creep properties of an aluminum, SAP-type alloy, MD 2100, fabricated by Professor F. V. Lenel of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Ansell and Weertman1 found unusually low creep rates. These creep rates are 4 or 5 orders of magnitude lower than is predicted by the slowest creep mechanism based upon dispersion-hardened alloy theory. They ascribed these results to a lack of both normal active dislocation sources and a continuous three-dimensional dislocation network. If one couples these results with the following factors of production and microstructure: 1) The compacted and sintered aluminum powder compact is hot-extruded, with an extrusion ratio of 25:1.2 2) The alyminum oxide particles are approximately 140A units thick, and have a spacing varying from 0.05 to 1.5 1. 3 3) The alloy has plate-shaped grains with minor axes of about 5 X 10 -3 mm and major axes several orders of magnitude greater than this.'

The use of computing machines to solve physical problems has made it imperative to represent physical data in a form computing machines can use. Although curve-fitting is an old and well-practiced art, there still seems to be some interest in questions regarding what methods can be used and why. Even though there are many good references on this subject, it may be of some value to discuss a particular method which has been found to be useful, and to make available the associated tables for its use in the hope that there can be saved a few of the tedious hours necessary to reduce many of the suggested methods to practice. Although a very brief discussion of the mathematical background of the tables is included immediately below, those interested only in their use can skip directly to the section on Use of the Tables. Direct Fit of a Set of Points A frequently encountered problem is: Given data which can be represented by a smooth curve +(x), to find an easy-to-evaluate function F(x), with only a few coefficients, which is a good approximation of +(x) on the interval 0 5 x 5 x,,. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to summarise development of design processes used in the 1100 oreoody as a result of experience encountered. Design methods have been developed as a result of the history of ground behaviour, free-standing qualities of cemented back fill and mass blasting techniques. This paper contains an historical review of design methods previously described by Matthews ( 1972 ) , Hornsby and Sullivan (1977 and 19781, Kirkby, Blair and Hutton (19781, and Stewart (1980). The reasoning behind design philosphy changes are discussed and placed into context with methods now adopted. The 1100 orebody is Mount Isa&apos;s main producer of copper ore (5 million tonnes per year ) . Proven reserves are 120 million tonnes at 3.2% Cu. Location of the 1100 orebody in relation to overall mine geometry was well described by Dayton (1976). Geology The orebody is located in a series of massive brecciated shale lenses, in either a siliceous or dolomitic matrix, surrounded and separated by a uniform shale sequence. The whole formation is truncated at depth by a faulted contact with a greenschist facies metamorphic sequence below (Figure 1 and Figure 2) Mathias and Clark (1976). The breccia is known locally as silica dolomite and contains nearly all the economic mineralisation. Interfingering of shale and breccia often results in irregular boundaries to the silica dolomite and the ore limits. Geometry The geometry of the orebodies is shown by Figures 1, 2 and 3. Figure 3 also shows the location of the copper orebodies in relation to the lead orebodies. Structure Although the orebody is contained within the massive breccia (u.c.s. 150-250 MPa), it is cut by shear zones sub-parallel to the regional bedding (north-south striking, dipping approximately 60o to the west), and diagonally by major transverse faults (Figure A). These major faults have continuity in excess of 300 metres, with varying amounts of displacement up to 200 metres, and are zones of potential movement.

It has been the custom of the Railroad Commission of Texas to hold hearings each month with respect to existence and imminence of waste of oil and gas in Texas and its prevention, and to issue orders restricting the production of oil to the reasonable market demands and allocating production to the various fields in Texas. The practice of designating the actual days during the month on which wells are to be shut down was discontinued in the order for November 1942, and orders issued thereafter contain only the number of shut-in and producing days for the month. Orders issued by the Railroad Commission are divided into two main subdivisions, the first a general shutdown order of all oil wells in the various fields in Texas, and second, the exception of certain fields to this general order. Table I shows the producing days for all of the fields in Texas for 1944 under the first of these classifications : The fields that have producing schedules varying from the general order may be divided roughly into three subdivisions, as follows: Table 2 shows the producing days for certain fields that were prorated as a group throughout 1944. Other fields which were occasionally included with this group were also prorated under the general order and by special orders. The producing days for these irregular fields are shown in Table 4. In Table 3 are listed fields that were exempted from any shutdown days during December 1944, the majority retaining this exception throughout 1944. Certain fields included in the general order were added to this group on the first day of the month shown.

WHEN diamond drilling was introduced in the Rhokana mines in 1939 it was used principally for pillar removal and for completion of the upper portions of shrinkage stopes which were being affected by increasing pressure. This method of drilling long blastholes proved so successful that it was extended gradually to cover stoping, pillar recovery, and hanging cave work. By 1949 virtually all the production of Mindola and Nkana was being obtained by this method. At the present time 87,500 ft are drilled each month by the 80 diamond drills in daily operation. Responsibility for control and issue of diamond drilling equipment and crowns, as well as tabulation of all performance figures, was taken over by a specially formed Roto drill department, which also investigated the problems encountered with this new method. To assist this department a fully equipped test chamber, Fig. 1, was established underground where performances of various types of machines and equipment could be studied under conditions as nearly uniform as possible.

The great improvement which have been made in late years in the different systems and instruments used to perforate the crust of the earth for purposes of testing and exploring for mineral resources or for other reasons, by means of bore-holes of greater or less diameter and to greater or less depths, are manifold. It may therefore be of interest to make an impartial comparison of them, or of such as are most commonly used. Being well aware of the difficulties which are encountered in such a task, a reasonable allowance most be made in such a comparison. It is a rare instance when even two decidedly different systems or instruments have been used in the same locality, penetrating identically the same strata to the same depth. The diameter of a borehole as well as its greater or less depth must also be considered in regard to its cost per foot, etc. But for practical purposes, for exploration at least, we may assert this rule: Any bore-hole, of whatever diameter, which allows the means of examining the strata most carefully and completely, will be sufficient for this purpose, but that one which will do it most economically and in the least space of time, must be considered the best for it. It will, therefore, partially depend upon circumstances, what system, in spite of other superiorities, may be the best in each case, and the following remarks may aid in deciding this question. To make the attempt here to review all that has been published upon the different systems and means of boring would be out of place. Reference can be had to the able publications treating upon this subject. A difference in this respect exists in regard to the use of the hollow rods in connection with the diamond drill, used for that purpose. The great future, which appears to be evident for this instrument, will be warrant enough for any one, who has had the opportunity to test it, to give his experience to the public. The experiments described in this paper constitute the preliminary work of an investigation outlined to determine the combined effects of steam and temperature on the endurance properties of certain steels. Essentially of a fundamental nature, it was found necessary, in order to make the investigation comprehensive, to test materials treated to give a wide range of properties. The work reported deals chiefly with nickel steel with one series of tests including nitriding steel. Such a study involves numerous variables, and requires an endurance-testing machine of rather special design. Testing Machines The testing machines used were designed by C. E. Weaver;l they are a modification of the White-Souther and McAdam types. Each was driven directly by an individual 1/2-hp. 115-volt direct-current motor, running at a speed of 2200 r.p.m. Fig. 1 shows the assembly drawing and Fig. 2, a photograph of one of the machines. Specimen B is held by the rotating specimen holder A inside the steam box F, which is closed at the top by a tight-fitting, elliptical cover G. The load is applied to the specimen through the rod D and bearing C. E is an oil pipe leading fromthe lubrication system to the bearing C. The steam, which comes from the power house, is admitted through an inlet (not shown in Fig. 1) at the side of the box, the drain being at the bottom. Steam packings were placed around the rod D and the rotating shaft at H, from which the water was drained by means of a vacuum, which usually showed a gage reading of about 10 in. The temperature was measured by a mercury thermometer, and the pressure by a steam gage. Method of Applying Load After the motor has been started and the specimen as a consequence put in rotation, the load is applied by placing the foot pedal A (Fig. 2) in contact with electromagnet B, the winding of which is connected electrically in series with the motor. A heat transfer study was made of hot gas injection into oil shale through wells interconnected by vertical fractures. This analysis involved the simultaneous numerical solution of a nonlinear, second-order partial differential equation that describes two-dimensional conduction heat transfer in oil shale and a nonlinear first-order partial differential equation that describes convection heat transfer in the fractures. Three nonlinear, temperature-dependent coefficients were used in this work; they are thermal conductivity, thermal capacity and retorting endothermic heat losses of oil shale. Vertical fractures were considered to be of finite height. Although vertical conduction heat transfer was not considered, an estimate of the error resulting from this limitation was made. The effects of injected gas temperature, injection rate, system geometry, cyclic injection and time upon retorting efficiency were investigated. Results from this study show that the rate of retorting oil shale is a direct function of both injection temperature and rate, and the theoretical producing air-oil ratio:(AOR) is an inverse function of temperature. Retorting rates are constant until "breakthrough" of the 700 F isotherm at the producing well, assuming constant injection parameters. Retorting rates for bounded systems are higher than the analogous unbounded systems and likewise AOR&apos;s are less. The use of an alternating injection-soak routine with high injection rates is less efficient than continuous injection at lower rates. These results indicate that injection temperatures on the order of 2000F or greater may give theoretical AOR&apos;s in the economic range. INTRODUCTION Over half of the known oil shale reserves are located in the U.S., and most of them lie in the Piceance Creek basin of Western Colorado. The Colorado oil shale outcrops on the edges of the Piceance Creek Basin. At the outcrops the shale beds are relatively thin, from 25 to 50 ft thick. In the center of the basin the oil shale is as great as 2,000 ft thick and is covered with 1,000 ft of overburden. It has been estimated that there are over 1,000 billion bbl of oil in shales having an oil content over 15 gal/ton in this basin. Oil shale does not contain free oil but an organic matter called kerogen. Kerogen yields petroleum hydrocarbons by destructive distillation. It must be heated to approximately 700F, at which temperature it decomposes into shale oil, gases and coke. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and, more recently, oil companies have conducted considerable research on surface retorting methods to economically recover oil from this shale. Another approach to exploit the oil shale deposits, in particular that portion having 1,000 ft of overburden, is to retort the oil shale in place and produce the liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons through wells drilled into the shale. Some research has been done on this approach.l,2 There are several variations to the in situ retorting approach. These variations fall into one of two groups, depending upon the geometry of the system: (1) retorting in a highly fractured or broken up matrix; (2) retorting from single fractures between production and injection wells. The latter is the group studied. Several investigators,3-6 using various assumptions, have studied flow of heat through horizontal systems. The objective of this work was to make a heat transfer study of in situ retorting oil shale by hot gas injection through wells interconnected by single vertical fractures of finite height. WE the undersigned, being all persons of full age and citizens of the United States, and a majority residents of the State of New York, desiring to form a corporation pursuant to the provisions of the Membership Corporations Law for the purpose of incorporating, as provided in Section 5 of Article I. of said law, the existing unincorporated association known as American Institute of Mining Engineers, do hereby make, acknowledge and file this Certificate for that purpose, and do Certify as follows I. That the American Institute of Mining Engineers is an unincorporated association organized and existing with the object of promoting the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals and the welfare of those employed in these industries by means of meetings for social intercourse and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate by means of publications among its members and associates the information thus obtained.
