THE construction of Norris Dam, built by the Tennessee Valley Authority on the Clinch River, a tributary of the Tennessee River, involved the production of coarse and fine aggregate for approximately 1,000,000 cu. yd. of concrete. A hammer-mill plant for the manufacture of sand from quarried rock was indicated as the most economical method of providing this material. The abrasive character of the feed as compared to the average hammer-mill feed made it necessary to control operations rather closely, and this resulted in the accumulation of many data bearing on production and maintenance. This paper will deal only with three specific sets of data, accompanied by such general information as may be necessary to explain the conditions under which they were obtained and followed by discussions on the relation of silica content to hammer wear, comparative costs of slugger and stirrup hammers, and comparative costs of tool-steel and manganese-steel grate bars. Coarse Aggregate Aggregate for the concrete poured at Norris Dam came from a dolomite quarry within 2000 ft. of the west abutment of the dam. Geologically this rock is known as a Knox dolomite. A typical chemical analysis is given in Table 1. The evaluation and selection of coals for producing metallurgical coke is indeed a complex process simply because coal is a complex and variable substance which is sensitive to how it is treated from the time it is mined until it is transformed into coke. A review of some of the more common evaluation tests made on coal and how the test results are applied in commercial practice should be of interest. Parameters used to select coking coal blends for wet and preheated charges should also be of interest.

ONE of the well-known and important uses of the noble or precious metals has been for electrical contacts. In fact, the elements of this group, comprising gold, silver and the six platinum metals, have been called "noble" because of their ability to resist- heat and corrosion, properties which were early found to be of importance in good contacts. Of these, platinum and its iridium alloys, palladium, and silver, have been extensively used. In recent years the electrical industry has been responsible for about one-eighth of the total consumption of the platinum metals in the United States. Information is not available as to what part of this one-eighth has been used for contacts but it is certainly an important one. SUBSTITUTES FOR PLATINUM During the past 20 years a considerable number of contact alloys have been proposed in the patent literature largely with the aim of more or less replacing platinum by gold or silver, and some of these alloys are finding increasingly widespread application as the reliability of their performance becomes established.. From even the partial data at hand it appears that this substitution by the less precious metals has replaced at least one-half of the amount of platinum that the entire electrical industry would otherwise be consuming at the present time.

Most of the bituminous and semibituminous coals of this country will coke, and all of them yield, on carbonizing, more or less marketable gas and byproducts. We need, however, a finer distinction as between various grades of coking coals and between coals of different degrees of byproduct and gas-making possibilities. There is required by the consumer or the coal producer a dependable test to show whether a certain coal or mixture of coals will make coke of good commercial value for blast-furnace, foundry, water-gas, or domestic use; whether any difficulties in operation may arise from properties inherent in the coal; and whether gas and byproducts may be expected of good quality and in profitable quantity. For determining coke quality, the most dependable test is an actual run in an oven, but for byproducts a coal may better and more accurately be tested in the laboratory or in a miniature oven or retort. As to what are the most desirable qualities in blast-furnace coke, the furnace men themselves are not in complete agreement. Some desire a hard, well-burned, "hot" coke, and others get better results from a llgreener," less hardened product that burns somewhat more readily in the furnace. But certain qualities of cell structure and porosity are commonly agreed upon as desirable. Information as to what kind of coke a certain coal may be made to yield is valuable in advance, whatever may be the consumer's ideas as to the particular kind most suitable to his needs. The question arises, Can we predict coking quality with any degree of satisfaction from a small-scale test? It used to be said that coals could not be tested satisfactorily on a laboratory scale either for the coke they would yield or the byproducts. On account of the mystery with which the coking quality of coal has been shrouded and the large determining influences that many believe are exerted by mass, pressure, and the passage of carbonaceous volatile matter through the coking material, it has seemed difficult to reproduce in the laboratory the exact conditions of commercial practice. In hard, discontinuous rocks, failure modes and stability are controlled to a great extent by the intersection of discontinuities with the excavated surface. We have solved the general problem of finding the shape and size of all blocks formed through the inter- section of any number of joints and excavation surfaces and will demonstrate a simple graphical method for determining which of these is the "keyblock." An example will explain this methodology applied to a simple open pit. The effects of slope curvature in plan or section, will be demonstrated. Finally, we will show how to determine the optimum orientations for the cut slopes. The methodology is based upon a powerful topologic theorem concerning the finiteness of spatial intersections. This paper is a companion to another dealing with underground openings in the Proceedings of the 22nd Symposium on Rock Mechanics (MIT) , July 1981. This paper discusses the rock blocks created by the intersection of discontinuities and excavation surfaces in a rock mass. It establishes principles and procedures by means of which those blocks that are finite and critically located can be identified and described. The main assumptions are the following: 1. The rock itself is assumed to be strong so that the only concern for stability is the movement of rock blocks them- selves.

This text is intended to provide the operator and turn-key contractor with the basic data for sizing vibrating screens to be used in ore crushing plants. The basic capacities, modifying factors, etc. used in the area requirement calculations were developed empirically and modified to their present values based upon years of practical applications. It must be pointed out that screening is much more of an art than an exact science, however, the information presented here should provide for reasonably accurate screen sizing when applied to metallic ores .

Practically all the scattered work on noble metal contacts has centered around platinum as a Standard and has had two more or less distinct aims. One of these has been the replacement of platinum by cheaper materials, and the other, the development of materials of superior electrical performance. The merit of a contact metal has been assumed to be dependent on its infusibility, and since the more precious metals have the higher melting points there has naturally been an association of the two qualities in the sense that the more precious were

INTRODUCTION Forecasting of metal and mineral prices is a complex and hazardous undertaking. In order to accurately forecast prices, the complexities of both marketing and production must be modeled for each commodity. Even with the most detailed model, the economy may change unexpectedly, invalidating the forecast. Because of these factors, this chapter will not attempt to present specific methods for price estimation. It will, however, review the fundamentals of price forecasting as applied to planning and design of the final pit shell. Recognizing that no price estimate can be exact, sensitivity analysis will be reviewed as an approach to coping with these unknown variations.

Mathematical modeling and computer simulation are the two primary techniques used for production analysis of underground coal mine layouts. Oftentimes, however, the selection between these two techniques is not based on an awareness of the level of effort needed for input formulation versus the suitability of the desired output. This paper will review mathematical modeling and two of the more prominent simulators (Virginia Tech's FACESIM and Penn State's UGMHS) used in underground coal mine production analysis. A hypothetical section will be analyzed by these programs and, based on the results of the aforementioned study, their advantages and disadvantages will be discussed.

Although methods for determining shaft lining thickness are well documented, little attention has been given to the design of station breakouts and other related shaft ground support structures. This paper discusses design of selected shaft structures for the Cathedral Bluffs project, a planned 54-kt/d (60,000-stpd) oil shale mine in western Colorado. Design philosophy and construction sequences used in the three completed 520-m (1700 ft) deep, 4.6-m (15 ft) to 10.4-m (34-ft) diameter shafts are described.

A complete rational analysis for design of excavation slopes and loaded rock masses is a desirable but perhaps unattainable goal. Irregular external and internal boundary conditions, poor understanding of failure criteria for large masses of rock, capricious material properties, and the importance of indeterminate forces and inaccessible and virtually unsampleable rock defects emphasize the importance of experience in this aspect of rock engineering. The experience must be correlated with geological factors. In certain regions the accumulation of such experience through the observation of existing rock slopes in various formations constitutes an important aspect of studies for design of rock excavations. In former times an accepted method of rock construction consisted of trials and adjustments. This approach is not often compatible with present methods of contract management. With the development of improved instruments and warning devices such as inclinometers, piezometers, relays, stress meters, and rock noise detectors, modified trial procedures of rock construction may reappear in specific applications. In spite of the great advances made, development of methods to predict the performance of rock slopes, abutments, and foundations deserves vigorous effort. Two distinct approaches may be taken. The rock mass in question may be considered a continuum and the stresses and strains throughout the region of influence of the work may be calculated. Or, the rock mass may be described as a discontinuum whose stability calculation involves the statics and kinematics of accumulations of rigid blocks. The prototype must lie in the range between these contrasting models. As yet, however, there is little reconciliation between the two methods

Normal dodecyl mercaptan was evaluated as a collector for flotation of sulfide minerals and precious metals. The reagent is from the class of normal mercaptoalkanes (n-alkyl thiols), and is commercially available in the form of a mixture of n-dodecyl mercaptan, the primary constituent, and a water-soluble dispersant, under the trade name Pennfloat™ 3. * Reported are results of bench-scale flotation experiments on many commercially treated base metal and precious metal sulfide ores. Dosages, points of addition, and flotation pH were among the variables studied. Most notable results were increased copper, molybdenum, and precious metals recoveries. Dosages of dodecyl mercaptan on some ores were considerably lower than required for conventional collectors. The reagent was shown to be a highly effective and versatile collector on virtually all of the more than 30 sulfide ore types examined.

CONSIDERING the two great interests of to-day, in iron upon the one hand and steel upon the other, and recognizing with measurable distinctness the peculiar fitness of each for special services to which they are applied, the proposition to unite the two metals in combination, to bring into simultaneous use the peculiar advantages which each offers, has great attractions. The limited success which has been attained by trying to bring about such combinations of the two metals through the use of fluxes in welding, has led to the general adoption of the opinion that an effective union of the two metals is impracticable, or to the view that if practicable it would have but limited commercial value. Such opinions are, I think, premature and erroneous, and having gained some knowledge of the character and value of the "Wheeler process" for welding iron and steel without the use of fluxes, I submit the following observations and opinions of the matter for your information, with the hope of eliciting such a discussion of the subject as it may require. The principle of the invention is to bring the two metals simultaneously to a welding heat in one pile, and then to manipulate it.

In the study of the coals of Illinois now being carried on by the State Geological Survey, an attempt is being made to determine the most satisfactory basis of comparison between different coals. The following discussion is based upon work done for the Survey in the laboratories of the State University and under the general direction of Prof. S. W. Parr. "Pure coal" has been defined by Mr. A. Bementl as ash- and moisture-free coal, and the use of this pure coal" as a basis for comparing different bituminous coals has lately been much discussed among engineers in the middle West. By some the B.t.u. of the pure coal is being used to check calorimetric results, and to calculate the calorific value of different coal-samples from the same seam, for which purposes it is necessary to assume—first, that the composition and calorific value of pure coal from different parts of the same coal-seam are uniform, and, second, that these values remain constant after the coal is mined, both of which assumptions there are reasons to believe are inconsistent with the facts. Certain variables are included in pure coal, as ordinarily defined, and disregard of them may lead to serious error. In any event, where delicate shades of difference are involved, no sure interpretation of results car] be made, unless these variables be eliminated. As a basis of comparison between coals, ash- and moisture-free coal is much to be preferred to " dry coal," and still more is it to be preferred to moist coal," as ordinarily reported in analyses. The major copper loss at Mount Lyell is in the coarsest particles presented to flotation. An analysis of data collected from the five Primary and six secondary ball mill circuits showed that grinding was limited by low breakage rates in secondary mills, possibly due to oversize balk. For five months, the make-up ball size for one secondary mill was reduced from 50 to 30 mm (2 to 1.1 in.). Frequent steady-state tests indicated that overall average breakage rates could be increased by about 70% using smaller balk. A mathematical simulation of the whole circuit with increased breakage rates showed that the resultant finer grind was likely to improve copper recoveries by about 2%.

MEASURES appropriate for the control of the silicosis hazard in mining cannot be formulated precisely, but sufficient has accumulated during the past quarter century to permit the suggestion of useful, though partly empirical, rules for its alleviation. The industrial hygienist today recognizes that the peril incurred by the inhalation of harmful dust is a function of two variable factors-the degree of harmful exposure and the specific susceptibility of the exposed individual to pulmonary injury. Control of the danger arising out of prolonged contact with pernicious air- borne particulate matter is consequently best exercised by influencing both of these recognized variables. Obviously the problem has two broad aspects-one, medical; the other within the province of the engineer. I-FACTORS COMPRISING THE DEGREE OF INDIVIDUAL SUSCEPTIBILITY Thorough investigations conducted among miners who have labored for years in the presence of recognized silicosis hazards usually reveal an impressive difference in the injury incurred by men whose exposure to dust has been nearly identical. After a quarter century underground, one individual is short of breath and incapacitated with miners' complaint, while a fellow workman suffers no pulmonary embarrassment and is in good health. Physicians ascribe this oft-observed difference in reaction to individual susceptibility and express a universal regret when they deplore the fate that chose to make the predisposed youth a miner rather than a farmer. To trust the health of miners to fate at the present time is even more unfortunate, because many of the factors that influence man's susceptibility to dust are known, and can be accurately determined by competent medical methods. Among the most important factors comprising susceptibility to injury by dust are the anatomical peculiarities of the individual's respiratory mechanism, his physiological response to the inhalation of dust, his previous dust exposure, the existence of pulmonary infections or other pathological processes in his lungs, his age,

Metal specimens were solidified through a measured thermal gradient so a free surface and the liquid-solid interface could be examined. A line structure was observed on the surface and a hexagonal structure on the interface. A model to explain these forms is proposed. NUMEROUS observations of the dendrite form have been made both in nonmetallic and metallic systems. From these, extrapolations have been made as to the probable dendrite form in pure metals. Observations of the dendrite form in pure metals, nevertheless, have been scanty. In general, these observations have been made on the skeleton dendrite after the mother liquid has been drained from around it, and a mechanism of the formation of the dendrite has been postulated from this solid form. Recent investigations have been conducted in an endeavor to make a study of the formation of the dendrite in several pure metals and the effect of several variables on this mechanism and final form. For these investigations, an apparatus was designed and constructed as shown in Fig. 1. It consists of a talc block containing a half-cylindrical depression, the end of which terminates in the conical recess of a copper block having an external attachment for cooling. A heating coil extends the length of the mold just beneath the lower limits of the cavity. The entire cavity for holding metal is coated with a thin film of graphite. Six thermocouples are equally spaced in the cavity and under the graphite, and six microammeters indicate the temperatures at the particular thermocouple stations. Readings were taken of all meters at the same instant time measurements were taken by photographing the panel of microammeters and a stop watch which was started at the beginning of the run. It was possible with this apparatus to solidify metals through a measured thermal gradient and to observe the progression of the liquid-solid interface with time by following the formation of the dendrite markings in the surface of the solid material. Pulses from large underground explosions which traverse the rock beyond the "fracture" and "plastic" zones do not behave as a spherical elastic model. Observed attenuation is greater than that predicted by the elastic wave equation, and the pulse form changes in a different manner, i.e., it usually lengthens with the first power of the distance. To more clearly define a mathematical real earth-wave model, detailed analyses of the spherical elastic and the Voigt viscoelastic models have been made, and results compared with observed wave forms from large confined chemical and nuclear explosions. TRANSIENT SPHERICAL ELASTIC WAVES Scope of Investigation Transient elastic spherical waves were investigated in detail. However, an elastic model is not, in general, an exact representation of wave propagation in rock. An understanding of transient elastic waves is desirable for gaining insight into explosive-generated wave phenomena because it can be employed for comparison of more complex and realistic models, such as the Voigt model, or others which may simulate real earth waves. The study was concentrated primarily on the peak values of the radial wave parameters : displacement, particle velocity, acceleration, stress, and strain.

THE purpose of this paper is to present briefly a description of some of the special methods of separation or concentration, either singly or in combination with others, and to give certain operating data and examples. Explanation of the usual methods of large-production mill treatment, such as flotation or wet tabling, or of chemically treating industrial minerals, is not included in the scope of this paper, although one of these methods might be, in certain instances, augmented by one or more of the special methods that will be enumerated herein. Description of these special methods will be centered on magnetic separators, electro- static separators and air flotation or air tables. MAGNETIC SEPERATORS In general, separating is achieved by exerting upon a particle some kind of force opposed to gravity, either directly or at an angle. For example, in the Wetherill or cross-belt type of magnetic separator some particles are lifted vertically from the others because they have been exposed to a force to which they respond more readily than particles of lesser magnetic susceptibility. Of course, there is a limitation to this vertical rise, for the particle must be of a high enough susceptibility to receive a magnetic force greater than the 980 dynes per gram of gravitational urge. To overcome this limitation, the induction type of magnetic separator was developed, so that it is only necessary to instill, say, 30 to 60 dynes per gram instead of the 980, to cause a deflection away from the vertical in falling, and that deflection can be used advantageously when falling by inserting a dividing knife-edge. The induction magnetic separator (Fig. 1) has become a fairly well known method of concentrating and purifying.
