DUST control is receiving considerable attention today by most companies as is evidenced by the many articles, papers, and books written on the subject. ~~~t of the larger mining companies have given this subject close study and have established standardized methods of control. Permissible Limits: The question of permissible dust limits has been considered by medical commit-ties and various national conferences. Dr. Lanza, of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Dr. Le-roy U. Gardner, of the Saranac Laboratory for the study of Tuberculosis, and Dr. Pancoast, of the University of Pennsylvania, have been members of these committees. A statement included in reports of some of these committees is as follows: Concentrations to which the dust must be induced in order to be safe have not been absolutely determined. There is evidence that a concentration of more than five million particles per cubic foot of a highly siliceous dust is dangerous. Therefore, it may be stated that it is desirable to avoid counts of more than five million particles of dust containing free silica to a high percent in working places. Table I gives the safe limits adopted by several state industrial codes. Table I. It is a difficult task to find enriched soft iron ore deposits in the central part of the Labrador Trough, New Quebec, Canada, when the areas investigated are covered by glacial drift. A qualitative interpretation of either a combined gravity-magnetic-seismic-resistivity survey or gravity-magnetic-seismic or gravity-magnetic-resistivity survey permits (with a low probability level) the detection of iron formations and ore zones as well as their delineation from most of the country rocks. This is possible because most of the altered iron formation underwent a slight increase in density through enrichment and because the accompanying geochemical alteration changed their magnetic properties. In order to increase the chances of success in finding ore bodies when using geophysical methods, different types of correlation were done for many deposits. These are: I) A quantitative correlation of the residual gravity anomaly intensities with the specific gravity, the iron content, the silica content, the porosity factor, and the dimensions of the underlying ore bodies. 2) A quantitative correlation of the ground magnetic intensity relative to a reference lithologic unit with the percentage of Fe.,O, recovery and with the volume ferromagnetic susceptibility. A few discoveries already have been made with this method. The details of the location, the description of the geology, and the history of previous geophysical surveys and their qualitative interpretation have already been given.', ' A very brief paragraph describing the regional and local geology is necessary in order to facilitate the understanding of this paper. The sedimentary iron formations of the Labrador Trough consist of a 700-mile geosynclinal segment composed of tightly folded and faulted Proterozoic sediments, volcanics, and intrusives that are rich in mineral deposits. The complex sequence rests unconformably on the basement of Archean granitic gneisses. The direct-shipping iron deposits are scattered along a northwest-trending strip, 5 to 10 miles wide and some 60 miles long in the facies rich in iron oxides and preferentially in localities where the original sedimentary environment favorized the deposition of a large concentration of magnetite associated with chert by physicochemical processes, e.g., oxidation-reduction potential, pH, temperature, pressure. Once leached of its silica and/or iron carbonate content and enriched with secondary a-hematite (occasionally goethite), this original magnetite associated with some primary hematite makes the blue direct-shipping ore which constitutes the important ore reserves in this mining district.

H G. MOULTON should not be confused with the famous economist of the same name. Our H. G. stands for Herbert George, whereas the chief of the Brookings Institution is Harold Glenn. Like most so- called New York members of the Institute's hoard, Mr. Moulton came from the West, in this case from Idaho where he was born, and Oregon, where he was educated at the University of Oregon. His early work included such jobs as mucker, assayer, smelter, chemist, mine surveyor, draftsman, engineer on surveys and construction, and assistant on mine examinations. In 1909 he was engaged as mining engineer by the firm of Eugene Meyer, Jr. S' Co., continuing with them for the next eight years.

The concentration and activity of oxygen in liquid copper has been measured by the reversible galvanic cell: at 1100°and 1200°C for the concentration range of oxygen of 3 to 5600 ppm Measurements for approximately thirly alloys at each temperature indicate that the activity of oxygen roughly follows Henry's law, the activity coefficients of oxygen being 0.12 and 0.205 at 1100° and 1200°C, respectively. These results compare javorably with the results of seven other electrochemical and gaseous equilibrium studies on this system, the free energy of the solution reaction 1/2 O2 = O (7 at. pct in Cu, liq) being -18.10 * 0.30 kcal per gfw at 1200°C. Estimates of the standard molar free energy of formation of CupO(S) are also made. Praclicul consideration of this cell as an oxygen sensor for liquid metals is discussed briefly. SOLID mixed-oxide electrolytes which have a defect structure in the anion sublattice have recently become a very popular means by which the chemical potential of oxygen is measured at high temperatures. Since the pioneering work of Kiukkola and Wagner1 such electrolytes have been used in numerous cell studies for determining the thermodynamic properties of metallic oxides and oxy compounds, the partial pressure of oxygen in vacuum systems and other atmospheres, and the properties of oxygen dissolved in metals and alloys. The use of a solid electrolyte in a cell for a fast reliable method of oxygen determination in liquid metals would be a very important tool to the process metallurgist. In copper, for example, the oxygen content of the molten metal in the cathode furnace is a prime factor in determining the "set" or solidification profile of cast wire bars. THE structures and properties of the copper-aluminum alloys have been the subject of much study since the classic investigation of Carpenter and Edwards1 focused attention on the engineering utility of these alloys. It was recognized at an early date that the metallographic structures developed in the aluminum bronzes were similar to those developed in steels, both in the annealed and the rapidly cooled state. Most investigators have been concerned with the acicular, martensitic-like structure formed from the ß solid solution upon rapid quenching; the transformation of the ß under equilibrium cooling to a lamellar eutectoid having been relatively neglected. With the introduction in 1930 by Davenport and Bain2 of the isothermal transformation technique for studying eutectoidal decompositions, a new field was opened. Although an enormous amount of work has since been done on the isothermal transformation of steel, study of structurally analogous systems has been almost totally overlooked. The outstanding exception was the prize-winning paper† of Smith and Lindlief3 who investigated the decomposition of the ß phase in copper-aluminum alloys by isothermal methods. This was followed in 1934 by Wasserman's reviews of available information on analogous transformations in eutectoid alloys. Since that time no comprehensive study of isothermally transformed eutectoids analogous to steel has appeared, although many valuable contributions have been made to an understanding of the structures developed in such systems. Important papers have been published by Kurdjumow, Gridnew and co-workers, 5-17 Obinata,18,19 Greninger,20,21 and others .22.28 The work to be described in this paper was an out-growth of preliminary studies on the isothermal transformation of a eutectoid aluminum bronze, after it became apparent that the alloy under study was reacting somewhat differently than the similar alloy used by Smith and Lindlief. PRELIMINARY EXPERIMENTS The material used in this study was a high purity aluminum bronze especially prepared by Ampco Metal, Inc. It analyzed: Copper-88.o7 pct, Aluminum-11.89 Oct, Iron-0.02 pct, Manganese-0.01 pct, Others-Balance. Although some disagreement exists on the exact composition of the eutectoid, this alloy was believed to be of essentially eutectoid composition even though some pro-eutectoid* delta particles existed in the microstructure of furnace cooled specimens. Specimens transformed isothermally at temperatures slightly below the eutectoid showed relatively large amounts of pre-eutectoid delta, but as will be shown later, this results

The ore, as it is raised from the mine, has all average assay-value of $11 per ton, chiefly in the form of free gold. All the ore goes directly to the stamp-mills, of which there are two. The older and larger mill contains sixteen batteries of five stamps each, with one Frue vanner to each battery. The new mill has eight batteries of five stamps and two Frues to each battery. The large mill is driven by Leffel turbine wheels, with a pressure of eighty feet, and a consumption of 600 miners' inches of water. The smaller mill is driven by "hurdy-gurdy" wheels with a pressure of about 550 feet and a consumption of 150 inches of water. At both mills the tailings from the stamps pass over about 20 feet of plates on their way to the Frues. In each set of plates the first or upper one is copper, the rest are so-called silver plates. The bullion from the stamps is about 800 fine in gold and 200 in silver. The concentrates from the Frues average from 11/4 to 1 ; per cent. of the ore stamped. They very rarely exceed 2 per cent. I was unable to get the exact assay-value of the concentrates, but it is said to vary between $100 and $200 per ton. The concentrates are treated at the chlorination works at the rate of one hundred tons per month. The capacity of the works is somewhat greater than this, but as the supply of concentrates is limited it is not deemed advisable to work them up any faster. Care is taken to keep the concentrates always damp until they are put into the roasting furnace. If this is not done, a decomposition of the pyrites begins, forming lumps which do not roast, and which consequently cause a loss of gold in the residues from leaching. A Fortschaufelungsofen is used for roasting. Its dimensions, incloding fire-box, are 12' X 80'. The hearth is one continuous plane, but the charges, of which there are three in the furnace at one time, are kept entirely separate. The development of production in West Texas during the year 1933 was largely confined to the expansion of proven areas, especially Ward County, Iatan and North Winkler. Wildcat activity was at a comparatively low ebb and resulted only in discoveries of probable minor importance in Ector County. The interest shown in deep wildcatting to test beds of pre-Permian age was a new development, which should soon throw light on the possibilities of deeper production from the present producing fields. The important pre-Permian tests of the year were: 1. Stanolind Oil and Gas Co., Todd No. 1, a unitized test, in north central Crockett County on a probable continuation of the Big Lake trend. The well encountered several showings of oil and penetrated an Ordovician section very similar to the productive zones at Big Lake, but was abandoned when sulfur water was encountered at 8041 feet. 2. Gulf Production Co., McElroy No. 103, in the McElroy Field, Upton County. The well was drilling at 8553 ft. at the close of the year in beds of probable pre-Permian age. The test is an important one because it should prove or disprove deep production in the Church-Fields-McElroy pools and also throw geologic light on the deep possibilities of other fields in the western part of the Permian Basin. 3. Humble Oil and Refining Co., White and Baker No. 1, in Pecos County, about 11 miles west of the Yates field. The well is on a nonproductive Permian high and should indicate the deep possibilities of the Yates field. At the end of the year, drilling had progressed to 7200 ft., where beds of pre-Permian age are believed to have been penetrated. The major fields in West Texas, in which present-day proration had its inception, were produced under increased restrictions. A date of importance in the proration history of the area was $ept. 8, 1933, when the Railroad Commission issued an order placing all producing wells under proration. The severe reductions in total outlet made during 1933 were well compensated for by a more than threefold increase in the price of crude oil. Acid treatment was one of the general engineering developments of interest. The work had not progressed sufficie~ltly at the close of 1933

PREVIOUS investigations on the effect of stress changes on the high-temperature creep and fracture behavior of metals have been confined mainly to the testing of complex alloys.172 Most of these alloys are structurally unstable during creep because of such effects as recrystallization, overaging, and so forth, so that the results are of limited application. The only pure metals on which observations have been made appear to be lead3,4 and aluminum5 tested under conditions which allow rapid recovery to take place. The present work describes the effect of a single stress change on the creep and fracture properties of a metal in which recovery is very slow. A Ni 0.1 at. pct Pd alloy was used so that grain growth and recrystallization did not occur during creep testing. Specimens of this material were heat-treated to give a uniform grain size of 10 grains per mm. Creep tests were carried out at 500°C using Denison T.47 machines; details of the creep-testing procedure have been given elsewhere.' All specimens were tested at a constant initial stress of 5 tpsi which gives, in an uninterrupted test, a minimum creep rate of ~10-3 pct per rnin and a life of -7000 min. Specimens were loaded under these standard conditions and after 1500 min, when secondary creep was well-established, the stress was changed to either 8, 7, 6, 4, 2, or 0 tpsi for a period of 180 min. After this time the original load was reapplied and the tests continued to fracture. The results are shown in Fig. 1. No detectable creep occurred during the period of reduced load, even at 4 tpsi, and on reverting to 5 tpsi the creep rate returned to its original value immediately. Increasing the stress to 8, 7, or 6 tpsi resulted in an instantaneous extension followed by a period of transient creep leading to a new steady creep rate. On returning from these higher stresses, the resulting creep rate at 5 tpsi was very low compared with the original value. Furthermore, the higher the stress during the stress change, the lower was the final creep rate. It is significant that the rupture life is comparatively unaffected by any of these stress changes.

The following correspondence relating to a paper bearing the above title, presented by J. F. Wolff, at the New York meeting in February, 1917, and published in the Transactions, Volume LVI, page 142, has passed between the author of the paper, and Mr. Anson G. Betts, and is interesting, although it was received much too late for incorporation in its proper place in Volume LVI. ANSON CT. BETTS, Asheville, N. C.-1. I should like to ask Mr. Wolff if he finds-from analysis of the iron formation and of the iron ore, and from the relative amounts of each in each unit area of the formation, unleached and after leaching, that the iron remains entirely insoluble and the total quantity still remains present; or whether he finds that some of the iron is removed, or possibly even added by deposition from the water passing through the formation. 2. The water that passed into the iron formation had to go somewhere; was it absorbed by underlying formations through hydration, or, after passing through the ore formation, did it come to the surface in springs at a lower elevation, or how did it escape from the ground? 3. I should like to ask Mr. Wolff whether he finds that the iron formation in the sedimentary series does not, come next to the quartzites and generally between the quartzites and slates. J. F. In common with others, you appear to have some hesitancy in accepting the fact of the removal, by solution, of the enormous quantity of silica which has been leached out of portions of the Biwabik iron formation, thus forming orebodies of merchantable iron ore. I believe that even Dr. Waldemar Lindgren once hesitated to accept this fact. However, the evidence is so simple and absolutely conclusive that the fact is established beyond all question. At the contact of orebodies with their rock walls, the bands of iron ore in the orebody can be seen in contact with the corresponding bands of original iron oxide in the rock wall, and the chert layers in the rock wall can be seen to give place to fine granular material (fine silica and iron oxide) and pore space. This is especially noticeable where slumping at the rock walls his not been so great as to displace the layers in the orebody from their contact with their corresponding layers in the rock wall.

Discussion of the paper of F. L. Bosqui, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 101, May, 1915, pp. 997 to 1033. H. A. WHITE, Springs, Transvaal (communication to the Secretary*). -It is, as the author points out in his valuable paper, a, fact, that in many plants the "trommel washings" are allowed to become eyesores, but the simpler system of pumping the entire product direct to the tube-mill circuit will avoid the extra expense of separation and small-scale treatment when one considers the relative distance of the points and the proportionately small amount of water. It is a matter of record that in stamp batteries the increase of weight has been developed concurrently with the increased use of tube mills, but independently and on its own merits. The satisfactory duty, excellent running time, and freedom from breakages in the newer mills, such as the Modder Deep, with 2,000-1b. stamps, will probably go far in removing some of the conservative prejudices mentioned by Mr. Bosqui. The success of the City Deep trial of the Nissen stamp cannot be entirely attributed to better feed distribution and discharge effects (published experiments on two-face discharge mortar boxes showed no advantages). Attention is directed to the treatment costs given by the author both before and after the increased capacity resulting from the addition of 16 Nissen stamps at Modder B. It will be observed that the only item of cost resisting the tendency to reduction caused by increased tonnage is that of milling, which has risen 1.3c. With reference to the provision for amalgamation in the new plans, it seems obvious that a great loss of head would be eliminated by passing the tube cone overflow over a separate top series of plates; three at the top and three at the bottom will effect the maximum amalgamation. This plan is followed at the Princess Estate and Gold Mining Co., Ltd., Modderfontein Deep Levels, Ltd., and Geduld Proprietary. Mines, Ltd., but elsewhere reliance is placed upon ample cone capacity and the underflow only is passed over three plates after going through the tube mill, while the overflow is passed direct to the cyanide works; both methods avoid the largely unnecessary elevation of considerable quantities of water, fine sand and slime involved in Mr. Bosqui's scheme.

RECOVERY of selenium and tellurium at Copper Cliff by the Ontario Refining Co. has been previously described by the writer.1 During 1935 a new building was erected to house this operation and description of the new plant and process form the subject of this paper. The building, of modern steel and tile construction, covers an area of 5900 sq. ft. with a volume of approximately 165,000 cu. ft. The large monitored center bay is flanked by two smaller outside bays, one of which is devoted to the tellurium section. All equipment, ceilings and upper walls, are treated with aluminum paint, giving good illumination and facilitating good housekeeping, essential from a health standpoint in handling material of this nature.

Gallium phosphide epitaxial layers were grown from the vapor phase on undoped single-crystal galliurn arsenide substrates in silica tubes by an open-tube wet-hydrogen process. The epitaxial layers were grown over a range of water pressures at three substrate temperatures. Excess donor concentrations were determined by surface barvier capacitance measurelrzents without removing the layers from the substrates. The excess dmlor concentration, ND-NA, is fo~ind to vary approxilnately inversely with the pressure of water added to the hydrogen carrier gas. This is the relationship that would be expected for singly ionized silicon donors on gallium sites in extrinsic galliunz phosphide, with the silicon coming from the SiO generated by the reaction of hydrogen with the silica tube. An increase in the partial pressure of water in the hydrogen stream decreases the SiO pressure. The results indicate that ni, the intrinsic hole and electrmt concentration for gallium phosphide at the three substrate temperatures, is smaller than the concentration estimated from available data for the density of states effective masses and the energy gap. Mass-spectrographic measurements confirm that the dono?, introduced into gallium phosphide is silicon. The equilibrium concentrations of silicon in vapor-flown gallium Phosphide have been estimated from available thernzodynamic information that includes the solubility measurements of silicon in gallium phosphide in equilibrium with a gallium-rich liquid phase. Satisfactory agreement with the measured silicon concentrations is obtained. FROSCH1 has described an open-tube process for growing single-crystal Gap from the vapor phase by a GazO transport mechanism. The method depends upon the reaction of H20 in an H2 carrier gas with a heated source of polycrystalline Gap which provides the necessary vapor species. When the temperature of these vapor species is lowered, super saturation occurs and single-crystal Gap will deposit on a suitable substrate. Unintentionally doped single crystals of Gap grown by the wet H2 process in silica tubes are n type. Evidence is presented to show that the donor introduced is silicon, and that a qua si-equilibrium model accounts for the inverse dependence of the donor concentration on the water partial pressure and predicts the magnitude of the donor concentrations. Ainslie et al. experimentally showed a similar inverse relationship between the carrier density and oxygen pressure for GaAs. Emission-spectrographic analyses showed a decrease in the silicon concentration with increasing oxygen overpressure for GaAs. Cochran and Foster suggested the theoretical possibility of suppressing silicon contamination by using Ga20 generated by the reaction of gallium with water vapor. 1) EXPERIMENTAL The apparatus and procedures are essentially the same as those described by Frosch.' The apparatus consists of a 25-mm-ID SiO2 tube extending through a controlled high-temperature flat zone for the location of the polycrystalline Gap source and a downstream temperature gradient falling at a rate of about 14°C per cm. The latter provides the region of super saturation for the location of the single-crystal substrate. The partial pressure of water in the inflowing hydrogen stream, pA2, O was controlled by mixing me-tered proportions of dry H2 with H2 saturated with H2O vapor at 0°C. The total gas flows were about 200 cu cm per min in all experiments. The Gap sources were prepared by pulverizing boat-grown polycrystalline ingots to pass a 20-mesh sieve. The substrates were cut from an undoped single-crystal boat-grown GaAs ingot purchased from Monsanto. This ingot had a carrier concentration of about 1015 atoms per cu cm, a resistivity of about 5 ohm-cm, and a mobility of about 5000 sq cm per v sec at 25°C. Substrates with dimensions of 1 by 1 by 5 x lo-' cm were employed. The growth faces were chemically polished (111) arsenic faces. Epitaxial layers, at least 7.5 x 10-3 cm thick, were grown,. This required from 1 to 24 hr depending upon the Pii2Q values and the temperatures. In all of the runs, the source temperatures were 50°C higher than the substrate temperatures. In 1774 a Swedish chemist, C. W. Schule, first recognized manganese as an element. That same year Schule's associate, J. G. Gahn, isolated the element manganese for the first time. In 1856 the Bessemer process of steelmaking gave birth to the economic importance of manganese. Later, in 1882, Robert Hadfield discovered high manganese steels. Although the primary use of manganese is in the ferroalloy industry, two additional important uses for manganese are making chemicals and dry cell batteries. Manganese is also vital to plant and animal life. Various chemical compounds of manganese are used in fertilizers, feeds, glass manufacture, paints, varnishes, and for numerous medicinal and chemical purposes. For the study of industrial minerals and rocks, only the chemical and battery grade material is of- concern, but for the sake of comparison, metallurgical aspects are included in this presentation. Although currently the world's largest consumer of manganese, the United States is producing only minor amounts of ore at the present time. This is due primarily to the fact that although huge deposits of manganese occur within our borders, all are of such low grade as to be economically unfeasible to mine. For many years various government agencies and segments of private industry have devoted sizable sums of money and time in an attempt to upgrade ores from the various deposits, and also in an attempt to recover manganese from blast furnace slags. In view of current world prices, and the quantity of high grade material available, there is little likelihood that any of these approaches will be found to be economically feasible in the near future. Geology and Mineralogy Mineralogy There are over one hundred minerals that contain manganese. These minerals vary from those with compositions that are predominantly manganese to those having only minor percentages. In general, it can be said that all primary deposits of manganese are carbonates or silicates. The most productive and profitable have been those of sedimentary origin and residual concentrations. Examples of these residual types of deposits are associated with the metamorphosed lodes of Madhya, Pradesh, India, and the lateritic deposits of Orissa and Bihar, India; nodules in the residual clays of the Philippine Islands, US southern Appalachians and Arkansas, Ghana, and Brazil. Sedimentary manganese deposits are best exemplified by the Nikopol district of Russia and the Tchiatouri area of Georgia, USSR. Hydrothermal replacements are characterized by the rhodochrosite deposits of Butte and Phillipsburg, MT. IN striking contrast to American mining engineering schools, in Europe a new president, known as the Rektor Magnificus, is elected each year or alternate year. An exception is Italy, where election is for a period of three years. The Rektor, who is elected by the full professors, must also be a professor and full-time member of the faculty. In most cases there is a Senate, composed of 5 to 14 full professors, some elected and some appointed, which controls the Rektor in policy decisions, but in some institutions there is no such controlling body. In the same way deans for each faculty or college are selected at the same intervals from among the full professors concerned.

CHROMIUM is one of the new metals, but considerable research has been required to determine an approximate record of its production from 1827 until the present. Its use in the form of pure metal is not extensive; of the chromite mined, about one-half is required for making ferrochromium, about two-fifths goes directly into refractories and the remainder is absorbed chiefly by the chemical trades. The industries that demand chromite for such uses are mainly in countries that produce little chromite, while the important chromite-producing countries are not generally consumers. The international flow of chromite is therefore of interest, as yell as the political and commercial control of resources of the metal.

The stoichiometry, structure, and stability of the internzediate phases formed between zinc and some of the rare earth (RE) metals were systematically exarnined by means of a recording effusion balance and X-ray diffraction analyses. In the La-, Ce-, PY-, Nd-, and Y-Zu systems, at or below about 600 C, the following sequences of phases (REZnx) were found: La, x = 1, 2, 4.0, 5.25, 7.3, 17/2, 11, and 13.0;' Ce, x = 1, 2, 3, 11/3, 4.3, 5.25, 7.0, 17/2,* and 11; Pr,x = 1,2, 3, 11/3 ,* 4.3, 5.3(?), 7.0, 17/2,* and 11; Nd,x = 1,2, 3,* 11/3,* 4.3, 6.5, 8.5,* and 11; Y,x = 1,2,3, 11/3, 4.5, 5.0, 17/2,* and 12.* The structure types of all these phases were classified. In addition, lattice parameters were obtained for the first time for the pluses denoted by asterisks. In the absence of de tectable valency or electronegativity effects the systesnatic trends in the results have been ascribed to the effects of' the lanthanide contraction. For example, the maximum number of zinc atoms in the coordination polyhedron surrounding the RE atom decreases from twenty-four to twenty-two to twenty as the size of the RE atom decreases. THE structures and compositions of a great many intermetallic phases (e.g., the Laves phases) are known to be based primarily, but not exclusively, on the space-filling efficiency of various modes of packing together atoms of different sizes. The valencies and electronegativities of the constituent atoms are, however, also influential. In extreme cases hypothetical intermetallic phases which fulfill the efficient spacefilling requirements may not be present in the constitutional diagram because of thermodynamic instability brought about by the operation of valency or electronegativity factors. Hence, for a detailed study of the influence of atomic size on alloy structure and composition, it would be desirable to minimize variations of valency and electronegativity. The intermetallic phases formed by the rave earths (RE) with some common partner offer an excellent opportunity for isolating the effects of size from those of valency and electronegativity. The rare earths exhibit a large, but smooth, decrease in size (the lanthanide contraction) in the series from lanthanum to lutetium when inter comparison is made for a common valence state, e.g., isolated atoms or trivalent ions. The elements yttrium and scandium are frequently included as pseudo rare earths; their sizes place them in the vicinity of dysprosium and lutetium, respectively. The electronegativities of RE elements vary by less than 10 pet. The trivalent state is the most common; however, the well-known tendency of cerium, praseodymium, and terbium to achieve higher valencies, and of samarium, europium, and ytterbium to seek lower valencies, requires that caution be exercised in the assumption of equal valencies. In the present study the existence, constitution, and structure of each of the numerous intermediate phases formed by zinc with lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, or yttrium were examined systematically and in detail. The investigation was conducted by a recording effusion balance technique and by X-ray diffraction analysis. The results enrich our knowledge of the phase diagrams of these systems. In addition, they present some clear-cut evidences of the operation of the size factor alone. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Apparatus. The mode of operation of the recording effusion balance and its application to phase studies have been discussed in detail elsewhere.' In this work, an effusion cell containing a finely divided alloy was suspended within an evacuated tube from the beam of an analytical balance. The tube was immersed in a massive molten salt bath whose temperature was controlled to within 0.5o C during each experiment. The loss in weight of the alloy owing to effusion of zinc* was continuously recorded. Two effusion cells, 1/2 in. diam by 1 in. high, were machined from tantalum rods. Two orifices were drilled laterally into the walls of each cell. The orifice areas were determined by calibration with pure zinc: cell A had a total orifice area of 6.5 x 10-41 sq cm, and cell B an orifice area of 9.8 x 10-3 sq cm. By appropriate choices of orifice area and temperature the wide range of volatilities from pure zinc to pure rare earth metal could be investigated. X-ray diffraction powder photographs were made at room temperature with a 114.6-mm Debye-Scherrer camera with both filtered CuKa radiation and filtered CrKa radiation. Lattice parameters were refined by a computer-programmed least-squares analytical treatment which incorporated appropriate extrapolation techniques.2 Frequent use was also made of a special computer program3 designed to generate a powder pattern from an assumed structure in order to verify structural assignments.
