The rules of solution of oxygen from H2O-H2-He gas and of nitrogen from N2-H2 gas in shallow melts of liquid iron were measured at 1610o and 1600o C, respectiuely. Concentration profiles were detemined in the liquid iron. Tire rate data indicate that the solution process is controlled by diffusion in the iron melt. The diffusivities for oxygen and nitrogen in liquid iron, as calculated from the present data, are DFe-o = (12 ± 3) < 10-5 sq cm per sec and DFe-N = 11 ± 2) X 10-5 sq cm per sec at the temperatures employed. AN attempt was made by Shurygin and Kryukl to measure the diffusivity of oxygen in liquid iron. In their experiments a silica disc was rotated in liquid iron containing oxygen, and the rate of formation of liquid iron silicate was measured. Assuming that the rate of dissolution of silica is controlled by diffusion of oxygen in the iron, the oxygen diffusivity was computed from the rate data giving Dfe-0 = 6.1 X 5 sq cm per sec at 1600°C. Although this value seems to be of the right order of magnitude, there is no proof of the correctness of the assumptions involved in the interpretation of these rate data. The oxygen concentration in the iron at the iron-iron silicate interface was taken to be that in equilibrium with the silica-saturated silicate melt. That is, it was assumed that no concentration gradient existed in the liquid silicate. This is a questionable assumption, unless it is proved that the thickness of the silicate layer is very much smaller than that of the diffusion boundary layer in the iron. Furthermore, Shurygin et al.1 used the Levich equation2 to interpret their rate data. This equation was derived for mass transfer between a solid disc and a single-phase liquid. The hydrodynamic and diffusion boundary layers in the iron stirred by a disc, via coupling of the silicate melt, may be appreciably different from those predicted by Levich&apos;s derivations. In the present work the diffusivities of oxygen and nitrogen in liquid iron were measured at 1610" and 1600oC, respectively. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Iron melts contained in high-purity gas-tight alumina crucibles were reacted with H2O-H2-He gas for the determination of the oxygen diffusivity and with N2-H2 gas for the determination of nitrogen diffusivity. At the end of the reaction period, the samples were quenched in a cold H2-He gas stream at the top of the furnace. Oxygen or nitrogen contents in the iron were determined by chemical analysis. Two different types of diffusion experiments were perforxed. To determine concentration profiles, a few rate measurements were made using 4-cm-deep melts. The solidified samples were sliced into discs and each disc was analyzed for oxygen or nitrogen. In another series of experiments, oxygen or nitrogen was diffused into shallow melts (about 0.5 to 1 cm in depth) and the total sample was analyzed to obtain an average concentration of the diffusate. In most experiments, 4- to 5-mm-ID alumina crucibles were used. Some experiments were also made in smaller (3 mm) and larger (7 mm) diam crucibles. This variation in diameter caused no difference in the reaction rate, within the limits of experimental uncertainty. To promote the establishment of a stable density profile in the melt, all the samples were suspended in the lower end of the hot zone so that the top of the melt was hotter by a few degrees. Molybdenum wire resistance heating was used. The reaction tube of the furnace was a gas-tight recrystal-lized alumina tube. In most experiments the furnace was heated by an ac power supply. To check the possibility of inductive stirring, some experiments were carried out in a dc operated furnace, with essentially the same results. The temperature of the furnace was controlled automatically in the usual manner. The temperature was measured with a Pt/Pt-10 pet Rh thermocouple and is estimated to be accurate within ±5°C. The iron used was prepared by melting and vacuum-carbon deoxidizing electrolytic "Plastiron" in a zir-conia crucible. The main impurities are: Si 0.004 pct P, S <0.002 pct Cr 0.005 pct N 0.001 pct Zr 0.002 pct O 0.003 pct Mn 0.004 pct C 0.002 pct The gas composition was controlled by constant pressure head capillary flowmeters. Oxygen was removed from the gas mixture by passing it through columns of platinized asbestos (450°C) and anhydrone. Selected H2O contents were obtained by passing the purified gas through oxalic acid dihydrate-anhydrous oxalic acid mixtures held at constant temperature in a water bath. Water vapor pressure data for the oxalic acid dihydrate-anhydrous oxalic acid equilibrium were taken from the 1iterature.3 The flow rate used was about 1.5 liters per min. The whole system was checked for tightness at regular intervals.

The standard free energies of formation of the lowest stable sulfides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten in equilibrium with the corresponding metal hazle been determined by reacting the sulfide and metal with H2(g)/H2S(g) mixtures. The reaction is A method for estimating the standard ~nolav entropies and standard entropies of formation at 298°K of the sul-fides of refractory metals is presented. The standard free energies of formation of the lowest sulfides of the metals in group VIa of the periodic table are probably best determined with the reaction* is known with greater accuracy than is that property for any other sulfur-bearing compound or solution which might serve as a reference phase to establish the chemical potential of sulfur for the essential re- However, there still remain significant problems to the use of Reaction [I] in studying these sulfides. First, the equilibrium gas ratios (Ph2S/PH2) are very small, and with the most stable sulfides in the series the ratios tend to be at the limit of the range for precise chemical analysis (10-4); and second, the reaction rate for the formation or reduction of these sulfides appears to be relatively slow. A primary reason for the latter problem is that the gas phase near the equilibrium concentration has very little capacity for transport of sulfur. It is to be noted that the thermo-dynamic properties obtained from the experimental results by Eq. [I] apply for 1 g-atom of sulfur in the metal-saturated compound even though the exact composition of the compound has not been determined. The work reported here is a study of the standard free energies of formation of the lowest sulfides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, and of copper, by Reaction [I]. In planning the experimental program, it was decided that the technique that has been used previously3"&apos; could be used with modification and that an improved analytical method was needed for determining H2S in the gas phase. The equilibrium pressure of nitrogen gas over pure silicon metal and silicon nitride has been measured in the temperature range 1400° to 1700°C. From the experimental data, the standard free energies and enthalpies of formation of Si3N4(a) have been calculated as functions of temperature over the above temperature range. Utilizing data in the literature and the results of this investigation, the specific heat, molar enthalpy, molar entropy, standard enthalpy of fornation, and standard free energy of fornation are estimated for the temperature range 298° to 1400°C. THE high-temperature thermodynamic properties of many metallic nitrides are not well established at present. This is a serious deficiency because nitrogen and nitride-forming metals are important alloying additions to steels, and knowledge of the interaction between nitrogen and these elements is essential to a better understanding of the behavior of steels. Metallic nitrides also are used as refractory materials. Consequently, the investigation reported here was undertaken to provide more complete information on the standard entropy and free energy of formation of silicon nitride. The experimental technique provided a direct measurement of the equilibrium pressure of nitrogen gas in the range of 1413 to 1700°C for the reaction: 3 Si(1) + 2N2 (g) = Si3N4 (a) [ 1 ] and below 1413oC for the reaction: 3Si(c) + 2N2(g) = Si3N4(a) [2] APPARATUS The experimental system consisted of a crucible assembly, a reaction chamber, and a gas supply and vacuum system. The Crucible Assembly which contained the equilibration specimen and molybdenum radiation shields with a susceptor for induction heating is shown in Fig. 1. Two covered, high-purity alumina crucibles, one nested within the other, contained the susceptor, shields and specimen. Central openings in the upper shield and crucible covers permitted on optical pyrometer to be sighted into the central cavity of the specimen. The specimen itself was a 5/8 OD by 1-in.

Properly constructed stopes are necessary underground for proper ventilation and safe, healthful working conditions. Mining companies are concerned with providing the best possible stoppings at an economic cost. It is important to consider 1) proper materials, 2) construction that ensures maximum performance from the material used, and 3) keeping costs within reasonable limits for the unit operation—stopping—involved. The authors investigated all aspects of the problem and have attempted to layout a study program to provide information on all phases. Mining companies every year purchase huge amounts of material for the construction of ventilation stoppings. This material by the time it is in place in the stoppings will cost the company many thousands of dollars. In addition and more importantly these stoppings are supposed to confine air travel along certain well defined paths into areas where it is needed to provide safe and healthful atmospheres for workmen. The cost of forcing this air through the mine is large and in general increases as the total quantity increases. Consequently, if the stoppings leak, increased cost results and in addition unsatisfactory ventilation may prevail in the mine. Therefore, it is essentia1 to provide the best possible stoppings at an economic cost. When attempting to provide the best stoppings possible at an economic cost, three aspects of the problem must be considered. These are 1) getting the most suitable material for stopping constructions, 2) constructing the stopping so as to get the best performance from the material used, and 3) keeping the cost of stopping construction to a minimum for a suitable stopping. This investigation is concerned with all phases of the problem and has attempted to lay out a study to provide information on all of them. In order to develop information on the best stopping material available it seemed wise, after con- sidering the job a stopping must do, to investigate the following aspects of material used for stoppings: 1) strength in compression, 2) compressibility or yield under load, 3) porosity, and 4) permeability. To provide information on the best manner of construction the following aspects of air leakage through the stopping were investigated: 1) when the stopping is built of dry stacked materials—i.e., the joints are not mortar-laid (See Fig. 1); 2) when the stopping is built of dry stacked material and then plastered on one side (see Fig. 2); 3) when the

When a new mine is in the planning stages, one of the most important decisions to be made is the selection of&apos; face haulage equipment and the interrelated transportation system to the surface. Equally important is the method of transporting personnel supplies and repair parts from the surface to the working places. When Bell & Zoller management elected to open the new Zeigler mine in the No. 9 seam near Madisonville, Ky., last year, various transportation systems were considered. It was agreed early that a slope mine would be preferred to a shaft mine, and that belt conveyors would be more economical than a rail system.

This paper presents a composite of ideas on materials handling systems by describing the design of an over-all system for a hypothetical steel pellet plant located on the Great Lakes. The bulk materials handling industry has served for years as the skeleton and the central system of nerves and nourishment for the body of basic industries. During the past two decades, this body has undergone substantial growth and mutation to meet the surging demands of our national economy for more and better products. The steel industry has kept pace with spiralling demand by innovation which has resulted in new processes and improved designs which generally yield greater production from fewer units. Materials handling technology has likewise improved its techniques and currently has a new, stronger generation of equipment to perform its necessary supporting function. Drawing upon excerpts from several recent plant designs, this paper describes a basic approach to the selection and application of modern bulk materials handling systems to an entirely new steel plant. Specific details are not available for publication, and therefore the plant described herein is a composite of ideas. This imaginary plant will be located on the United States side of the Great Lakes and its owner will be called the Hypothetical Steel Corp. for purposes of discussion. TYPES OF EQUIPMENT The basic bulk materials handling systems and components required in a plant so situated are: lake boat unloaders; railroad train unloading systems; storage pile stackers and reclaimers; large bins and regulating feeders; and the conveyor systems — with their attendant controls— which connect the foregoing. PROGRAM OF DEVELOPMENT The initial work on the plant must be that of the process engineers who develop and refine the basic data, i.e., the logistics of all raw materials, waste materials and products within the plant. During this phase of study, the materials handling engineer may advance his planning only in basic areas such as movements at the dock and movements at the railroad. This initial planning work is concerned only with defining logical plant locations in the light of channels, currents, existing traffic, governmental regulations, locations of existing railroads and available rights-of-way. These systems alone have their own individual criteria which must be respected and accommodated in the final layout. All other elements, such as the arrangement of the blast furnaces, power house, coke plant, by-product plant, scrap preparation plant, BOF shop, and facilities for continuous casting, degassing, calcining, etc., are dictated by their own specific needs and their relation to each other. In the arrangement of these latter facilities, the materials handling system is secondary and must be designed to accommodate. BASIC LOGISTICS The result of the process engineer&apos;s work can be expressed in terms similar to those shown in Table I. Plants are customarily rated in terms of annual tons of ingots. Therefore, the basic size of this plant can be determined by referring to the BOF Shop wherein it is sized at 5 million tpy. From the base, the required hot metal can be traced to the blast furnace, which in turn indicates the amount of required flux, iron bearing materials and coke —which in turn establishes the demand for coal. Likewise, the total demand for flux can be determined by the combined demand of the lime plant and blast furnace. The generation of fines and waste products, which have significant value but are not usable as such, create the need for a sintering plant. From projections such as the foregoing, the complete flow of materials can be established and accommodated. The basic premise upon which this typical materials balance is predicted is that the plant will be a producer of high tonnages of non-SpecialtV- products. Kansas retained, for the eighth consecutive year, the fourth position in the list of oil-producing states. The total crude-oil production during 1934, as reported by purchasers to the State Corporation Commission, was 45,538,564 bbl. on 97 per cent tank table calculations of the purchasers, or 46,946,973 bbl. as carried on 100 per cent measurement in U.S. Government reports. The corresponding figures for 1933 are 40,008,940 and 41,236,021, respectively. The increase of production over 1933 was due to the rising demand for oil from Kansas, caused principally by three factors: the continued regulation of the producing branch of the industry by Federal and State authorities, which had the effect of reducing illegal production that has been so destructively competitive with Kansas crude and refined products; the normal decline of production in other areas; and, last and best, general increased demand of the public for petroleum products. The price level remained unchanged for the first time in oil history for so long a period. Kansas 36" gravity crude remained at $1 per barrel from September, 1933, and throughout 1934. Price stability and the confidence in the regulation of production to meet the consumer demand, which is increasing, brought greatly renewed interest in Kansas fields. Drilling activity has been largely in the western part of the state where expiration of leases, on large blocks of acreage, assembled before the depression, is forcing either action or loss of the lease investment carried for a long period. The drilling of these many blocks of acreage, previously assembled on geologic information, has caused the opening of more fields than during any previous year of Kansas oil history and is proceeding faster than anticipated a year ago. Interest grows within a successful enterprise, and the momentum caused by the successes of 1934 will continue in 1935 unless unusual conditions arise and end the apparently good opportunity for financial return. Geological exploration methods used in new field discoveries are shown in the tabulation of new discoveries (Table 3).

Nonparametric statistical tests have practical application to many geological problems because, unlike the standard statistical tests, they do not require assumptions regarding the form of the population frequency distribution. Many of them do not even require that the variable be susceptible to numerical measurement. These tests are useful either 1) for geological data representing population distributions of unknown form, or otherwise not meeting the requirements for standard parametric tests; or 2) for sample attributes that cannot be measured but only ranked in order of relative magnitude. The application of two such tests will be illustrated. The Kolmogorov-Smimov test will be used to test for significant differences in copper distribution in samples of two rock types; the Spearman rank-correlation method will be used to determine whether there is a significant association between intensity of rock alteration and copper content of the rock. Nonparametric tests are, in general, quicker and easier to perform than the corresponding parametric tests, and they may be applied to a greater variety of data. They are not as powerful as the standard tests if used on data to which the latter are applicable, and computer programs utilizing them are not generally available. The use of standard or parametric statistical procedures for the interpretation of measured geological data is familiar to most mining engineers and explora- tion geologists. The computation of product moment correlation coefficients on sample assays for more-than one component is already standard procedure in some company operations, as is the use of Student&apos;s F test and Snedecor&apos;s F test for the comparison of means and variances of sample groups. The application of these three tests is limited by the prerequisites that the samples must be random, independent representatives of normally distributed populations and that the variables involved must be measurable. If such tests are applied to data which fall short of fulfilling these prerequisites, then the probability level attributed to the computed statistic is invalid and the conclusions based thereon may be erroneous. A number of nonparametric, or distribution free, statistical tests have been developed for use with data which are not amenable to standard parametric procedures. These tests have been widely used in the behavioral sciences such as psychology and sociology for some time, but their application to geologic problems is relatively new. The state of Michigan showed considerable activity during 1935. The center of greatest interest was the Crystal field, which was unknown until March, 1935, and is an illustration of the effect of the unknown and unexpected on Michigan oil development. The fields of the state (Fig. 1) produced a total of 15,770,000 bbl. of oil in 1935, or about 5 million more than in 1934. In order to keep up this production 307 new oil wells were drilled, of which 88 were in the Crystal area, which produced 3,600,000 bbl. This field had a rapid development and reached its peak in October. Since that time increasing water encroachment has caused a rapid decline. The pay horizon at the top of the Monroe dolomite is only a few feet thick. Big producers were offset by dry holes or small wells. The discovery well, which was in section 11, Crystal township, Montcalm County, was drilled March 28, 1935. Its initial production was 5000 bbl. per day, and up to Dec. 31, 1935, had produced 350,000 bbl. of oil—dose to one-tenth of the total production of the field to that date. The Beaverton field, which was discovered at the close of 1934, did not develop rapidly. Four small producers were finished in the Dundee lime during the year. West Branch was active and at the end of the year had 97 producers, 72 of which were drilled during 1935. Most of the wells produce from the Dundee lime; a few are finished in the Traverse. The Birch Run field deserves special mention, for it is the one area where consistent production continues to be found in the Berea sand at about 1500 ft. Wells are small, 20 now producing a total of about 300 bbl. per day of oil of fine quality. The old Central Michigan producing area, extending from Nit,. Pleasant through Yost to Porter, continued to be the principal producing area of the state and accounted for 10,370,000 bbl. from 660 producing wells. Ninety-three new wells were drilled in this territory. The Porter field, at the southeast end of this producing trend, was outstanding from the standpoint of production. The old Leaton field of Isabella County added several new producers. Its production was greater than in 1934.

The outstanding features in Pennsylvania and New York during the past year were the buying of acreage for water-flooding in other Pennsylyania fields than the Bradford and Allegany districts, the wide adoption and use of the five-spot plan of development and water-flooding in the Bradford and Allegany districts, the discovery of gas production in the Onondaga lime in southwestern New York and the opening of the T. W. Phillips Gas & Oil Co. Fifth Sand pool in Butler County, Pennsylvania. Water-flooding has occurred in many other fields than the Bradford, Pa., and Allegany, N. Y., fields. In some the flood was a natural encroachment of edge water, in others the water was introduced into the productive sand through wells either accidentally or intentionally. Most of these floods have not been commercially successful. There has been some interest aroused in the Clarendon field, Warren County, Pennsylvania, by a new and apparently successful flood and other floods have been begun. Five-spotting in the Bradford and Allegany fields is the plan of water-flood development under which the area to be drilled is laid off in a grid of equal-sized squares with water intakes located at each corner of the squares and oil wells located in the centers of the squares. So far there are two five-spot water floods that are, beyond doubt,, commercial successes. There were 600 acres under five-spot flooding at the end of 1928, as against 150 at the end of 1927. By the end of 1929 there will be a total of between 1200 and 1500 acres five-spotted unless a low market for Pennsylvania grade crude oil develops. An increase of 6000 bbl. in average daily production is expected to accompany this development in 1929. The Belmont-Quadrangle Drilling Corpn. found the Onondaga lime or a higher strata at 3995 ft. north of Bolivar, Cattaraugus Country, N. Y., and a number of miles from any other important gas production. When drilled to 4006 ft. the well yielded 3,500,000 cu. ft. of gas and when shut in 1700 Ib. rock pressure. The one oil pool opened in 1928 was in Buffalo township, Butler County, Pa., in October, when the T. W. Phillips Gas & Oil Co. completed a wildcat well in the Fifth sand at 700 bbl. a day, which by the end of
