A new method is proposed to obtain automatically an unbiased estimate of the interdendritic spacing A. It is shown that the structure can be built by a random distribution of a rectangular basic unit. The usual definition of the interdendritic spacing yields a value 1 which, coupled with A, gives the shape of the basic rectangular unit. A study of the relationship between dendrite arm spacing and solidification rate was conducted as a part of a research program on dendritic solidification. For any comparison between theory and experiments to be meaningful, it is necessary to measure reproducible and clearly defined spacings. Fig. 1 shows clearly that even in a fairly simple structure such measurements are difficult. if we compare photos (a) and (b), we can hardly assess which one shows the larger spacing. Moreover, the quantity to be measured can be defined in several ways. On a small scale, dendrites seem to be distributed in a very regular and ordered way. However, on a larger scale, this regularity no longer exists. The usual way to measure spacings is to pick up some rows of dendrite stalks; such measurements are obviously biased since less orderly regions are not taken into account. A more objective method is to section the picture with randomly oriented straight lines and average the measured interdendritic spacings. The purpose of this paper is to show that such measurements, which can be conducted automatically, yield objective and reproducible results which are directly related to characteristic features of the dendritic structure. I) THEORETICAL ANALYSIS 1-1) Mathematical Morphology and Function of Co-variance. Matheronl and Serra2 enlarced- the definition and geometrical meaning of the notion of covariance to encompass problems in mathematical morphology. A brief review of part of their theory can be stated as follows. Let A' be an isolated particle, and let us consider a group of two scanning points h is the vector joinlng these points, h its modulus, and a its direction. Let us also define a boolean function, k(x), whose value is 1 if x lies inside the particle and 0 if it 1s outside. The total number of events in which both points are inside A' IS the covariance Ii',(h): is the measure of the intersection of A' with the particle ALh obtained by translating A' of -h Obviously K,(O) is the volume of the particle A', or its area if A' is a two-dimensional body. The average value of K,(h), when the direction of a vector h of constant modulus is rotated, is: An important property of the covariance is illustrated on Fig. 2: if the shape of a particle shows some regularity along a direction a, K,(h) generally presents a maximum. In a marked departure from conventional practice, the Power Plate process combines the two unit operations of leaching and electrowinning into a single continuous step for direct recovery of copper from sulfide concentrates, cement copper, copper scrap, and copper oxide slurries. Considering how environmental controls are pre- venting development of smelters for additional capacity or new construction, the Power Plate process provides a welcome pollution-free alternative to the smelting-electrorefining routes. And its low capital investment and low operating costs also recommend it to copper producers who are now using or investigating various hydrometallurgical methods.

In part 111' of this series it was shown that during the selective oxidation of a 3 1/4 pct Si-Fe alloy in damp hydrogen, only silica, (observed at room temperature) as low cristobalite or low tridy-mite or both, was formed as an oxidation product. In some in- „ stances where the film was fairly thin (probably well under 100A) there was some suggestion of an amorphous form of SiO2. The present investigation of oxidation rate showed that the selective oxidation of silicon-iron can be rather complicated, and apparently impossible to rationalize in an unequivocal manner. In some temperature regions, notably near 800" and 1000°C, the data seem to obey the familiar parabolic rate law. However, at intermediate temperatures complications were noted, some of which are possibly due to the order-disorder reaction in the silicon-iron solid solution. IN an earlier report' it was shown that during the oxidation of 3 1/4 pct Si-Fe alloys in H2O-H2 atmospheres only silica films were formed in the temperature range from 400° to 1000°C in hydrogen nearly saturated with water at room temperatures, or at dew points as low as -45°C. In the work to be reported here, some observations are made on the rate of oxide film formation. As in the earlier investigation, electron diffraction patterns generally showed either low tridymite or low cristobalite or both, except for some very thin films. These sometimes showed diffuse rings, presumably due to a very small crystallite size, or in a few cases, diffuse bands probably caused by an amorphous film. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Vacuum-melted silicon iron made of high-purity materials was rolled into strips 0.014 in. thick, and cut into samples 1/2 in. wide by 1 in. long. Chemical analysis showed 3.2 pct Si and 0.002 pct C. All samples were surface abraded with 600-grit paper, were solvent cleaned, and then placed in an paper,apparatus containing a "Gulbransen type"2 micro-balance. Here the gain in weight of the samples of about 5 sq cm area could be followed as a function of time during the oxidation caused by the water in atmospheres of various controlled water-hydrogen ratios. The water-hydrogen ratios can most easily be described as varying from a dew point of 0°C (PH2O-p^2 = 6.2 x 10-3 , to K (P j -40°C (PH2O/PH^= 1.3 X 10-* Most of the experiments were conducted at the 0°C dew-point atmosphere because drier atmospheres caused so little gain in weight that the accuracy of measurement was poor. Because of this, only the data obtained at PH2O,/P,,,= 6.2 x X3 will be reported. The temperature range extended from 800" to 1000°C; and most of the oxidation runs lasted for about 24 hr. The reproducibility of any reading was about ± 1 ?, but the sensitivity of the balance was about 0.2 ?. The atmosphere, flowing at 200 cm per-min, was preheated to the furnace temperature before contacting the specimen. While the gas flow caused a measurable lift on the sample, it was ordinarily sufficiently constant so that it was not an appreciable source of error. X-ray and electron diffraction checks of the samples before and after oxidation showed no evidence of preferred orientation, either on the metal samples or on the silica films formed. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The data obtained are summarized in Table I, and some are given in detail in Figs. 1 to 4. In the fourth column of Table I, kp refers to the parabolic rate constant in the expression (?/cm2)2 = kpt + c [1] where ? = micrograms gain in weight kp = parabolic rate constant in units r2 /cm4 t = time in minutes c = constant It will be noted that in many cases no value for kp is given; this is because in these instances the data did not obey the parabolic rate law. The silica film thicknesses given in the last columns are values calculated from the weight gain, an average tridy-mite-crystobalite density, and by assuming a perfectly plane surface. Lattice parameters of various hafnium compounds, two borides, a carbide and a nitride were determined. Some physical properties were measured and comparisons with the properties of the corre-sponing zirconium compounds were drawn. A LTHOUGH borides of transition metals have A been extensively investigated in recent years, there are few references in the literature to borides of hafnium. This is not surprising, in view of the extreme scarcity and great cost of the purified metal. Becker' reported the existence of a boride, carbide, and nitride of hafnium; he listed the formulas as HfB, HfC, and HfN. However, in his work no mention was made of chemical analyses of the reaction products. In this paper results of a study of various hafnium compounds, including borides, carbides, and nitrides, are reported. It was expected, of course, that these compounds would closely resemble their zirconium analogues, which have previously been extensively investigated. Three borides of zirconium are known: ZrB,² ZrB,² and ZrB212.4 In addition, one carbide, ZrC,5 and one nitride, ZrN,5 have been reported. It should be noted that ZrB and ZrB12 are stable phases only in relatively high-temperature regions, unlike ZrB2, which is stable from room temperature to its melting point." It was felt that hafnium would yield corresponding borides, carbides, and nitrides with similar stability ranges. Experimental Procedures and Results A quantity of hafnium metal that was better than 97 pct pure, with zirconium as its major impurity, was furnished by the Argonne National Laboratories. The boron powder used was approximately 96.5 pct pure. In general, the procedure involved mixing the metal and boron powders in the desired proportions, and subsequently hot pressing them. The resulting specimens were analyzed chemically and phases present were identified by X-ray diffraction methods. A Philips Norelco Geiger counter spectrometer was used for identification of components and for measurement of lattice constants. Filtered copper radiation was used for all X-ray work. Electrical resistivity and density measurements were carried out at room temperature. The stable diboride, HfB2, will be described first. Stoichiometric quantities of boron and metal were heated to approximately 2000°C during hot pressing. The reaction product was shown by X-ray diffraction methods to be isomorphous with ZrB2 (space group Dlgh; P6/mm). Values of lattice constants of HfB2 compared with those of ZrB2 are shown in Table I. The calculated density of HfB2 is 11.2 g per cc, compared with a measured (pycnometric) value of 10.5 g per cc. HfB2 specimens prepared under a wide variety of conditions (including variations in initial Hf-B ratios) showed only insignificant variations in lattice constants, indicating a very narrow range of homogeneity. Like ZrB2,7 HfB2 is an excellent electrical conductor. The resistivity at room temperature of hot-pressed samples, approximately 85 pct dense, is 12 microhm-cm. Considerable progress has been made during the past year throughout the Russian petroleum industry. Perhaps the most remarkable achievement is the execution of the programs set out by the Central Planning Bureau of the Department of Commerce. These programs have been increased twice during the past operating year, necessitating drilling the richest reserves, instead of developing gradually as originally planned. The fulfillment of the set-out programs during the past few years makes therefore the present five-year plan of considerable importance to the international oil statisticians in approximating actual supply conditions up till 1933. The production of all Russian fields increased by 14,200,000 bbl. as compared with the 1927-1928 operating year, while the next year's program anticipates a further increase of 15,700,000 barrels. It appears therefore that production for 1932-33 will total 187,000,000 bbl., or approximately double that of the operating year just closed. It is also evident that the old fields are counted upon to produce only about 67 per cent. of the total, the new fields, not yet discovered, to furnish the balance of 33 per cent. C.-Are the results of the experiments in practical operation? WALTER 0. SNELLING.-There have been no large-scale operations up to the present. The necessary conditions of temperature are easily arranged for, but the required condition of pressure, 800 lb., is not so simple a matter. The company has been working on this problem, and at the refinery in Oklahoma work of this kind is now being carried on. The way in which an ordinary still will leak at 50 lb., and more at 100 lb., leaves some doubt in the mind of many as to what can be clone at a continuous working pressure of 800 lb. On the other hand, the fact that they are making ammonia abroad by a method which employs higher pressures and temperatures than anything involved in this method, leads me to believe that the difficulties, which will undoubtedly arise when this is attempted on a commercial scale, can be overcome. Ruby crystals of exceptional optical quality have been grown from fluxes composed of Bi2O3 + PbF2 or Bi2O3 + BiF3. Careful control of growth conditions was required to minimize the number of growth defects consisting primarily of dislocations, occluded flux, and growth twins. Slow growth rates coupled with the addition of small amounts of La2O3 as a flux dopant were helpful in producing nearly perfect crystals. Chromium concentrations up to 1 pet were incorporated into these crystals without adversely affecting their perfection. Crystals up to 10 mm in diameter having as few as one to ten dislocations per crystal were typical of those produced under optimum growth conditions. Under these same conditions the occlusions were eliminated, and growth twins were either eliminated or reduced to one to three twin boundaries per crystal. INTEREST in the nature of lattice imperfections produced during the growth of ruby crystals (Al2O3-corundum structure) has been stimulated recently by the need for ruby lasers of good optical uniformity. As a result, ruby crystals grown by the flame-fusion (Verneuil) process have been studied in detail and have been found to contain high densities of dislocations (106 to 107 dislocations per sq cm) and mosaic structures that impair their optical quality.'-3 Attempts to improve the quality of Verneuil-grown crystals by controlling the growth variables have not been entirely successful. On the other hand, rubies grown by the flux process have received little attention even though their more nearly equilibrium growth conditions suggest that they would have fewer growth defects. Nelson and Remeika have shown recently that small flux-grown rubies can indeed be made into very low-loss lasers. However, they did not report information on crystalline imperfections in these crystals.4 Stephens and Alford have reported briefly on defects found in a flux-grown corundum crystal but they neither described these defects in detail nor related them to the method of growth.5 The present investigation was undertaken to establish the relationship between growth conditions and crystalline perfection of flux-grown rubies, sapphires, and other crystals of the corundum family. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The corundum crystals used in this study were grown by slowly cooling solutions of A12O3 in molten-salt solvents of PbO + PbF2, Bi2O3 + PbF2 or Bi2O3 + BiF3. The materials employed were Linde A (a Al2O3 powder) with reagent-grade chemicals as solvents. Some of the solutions also contained small additions (1 pet or less) of one or more of the transition metal elements chromium, manganese, iron, and titanium as crystal dopants. La2O3 was added to some of the solutions to alter the growth habit of the crystals. The La2O3 promoted the occurrence of growth facets parallel to (0112) and {1011} planes, where the indexing system is the morphological system described in detail by Kron-berg6 and used throughout this paper. The melts from which the crystals were grown were prepared by mechanically mixing the various constituents and placing them in platinum crucibles. The covered 50- and 100-ml platinum crucibles were heated in muffle furnaces at 1250°C for short periods of time (1 to 4 hr) and then program-cooled at either 2° or 4°C per hr to 1000°C. Improvement of drilling operations through the development of new, unconventional drill bits is a prime research target at Sandia Laboratories, Albuquerque, N.M. Sandia is currently focusing efforts on four new bit designs which its engineers believe may eventually improve penetration and reduce operating costs. The Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) has budgeted $500,000 in support of this program to date. Two of the drill bits-one that chips rock with high voltage spark discharges, and another which fires small projectiles into the rock ahead of a regular roller bit-are designed to increase both penetration rates and downhole bit life.

In view of various papers and discussion.;, at recent meetings of the Institute, upon testing, methods of testing, inspectors, inspection and specifications, it has occurred to me that my experience of some fifteen years, in the making and enforcement of specifications, in connection with the Motive Power Department of the Pennsylvania Railroad, might give some value to the few suggestions offered in this paper. There is friction, not to say antagonism, between the producers and the consumers of structural materials. On the one hand, the producers complain of the severity of inspection, or the lack of knowledge and want of good judgment on the part of inspectors, and, indeed, have gone so far as to suggest the abolition of the whole scheme of inspecting and testing materials. On the other hand, the consumers are, apparently, more and more relying on specifications

The computer system described has the capability of three levels of control, including DDC with a single central processor. The coal procedures described in this paper address the problems building a body of coal data that is accurate, precise, readily available, and easy to manipulate. The system is a set of interactive computer procedures consisting of a) data gathering (core hole and geophysical logs, their location, elevation, etc.) and standardized computer printouts, b) the graphic outputs of coded logs (log strips-scale variable) wing on-line electrostatic plotter, c) determination of seam continuity via relative movements of the log strips on an interactive graphic display terminal, d) calculation of the seam parameters (minable seam thickness, volume of non-coal material in the seam, ash and sulfur content of the raw or prepared product, roof and floor characteristics and other attributes relevant to mining), e) posting of seam parameters wing on-line drum plotter controlled by a microprocessor on-line to the minicomputer (PDP- 11).
