Accurate modeling of the semivariogram is an extremely important step in the geostatistical analysis of mineral deposits. Automatic fitting of a mathematical model is often possible but not necessarily desirable. Significant geologic and statistical information must be taken into account in the fitting process, which is not always available to the computer. Manual model fitting is, on the other hand, extremely time consuming. Interactive graphics are best suited to optimize the process. Many interactive methods are described, which are adapted to modeling semivariogram in one-, two-, or three- dimensional environments.

The solubility of A14C3 in cryolite melts has been determined by holding the melt with aluminum in a graphite crucible for 4 hr at temperature, quenching the crucible in water, and analyzing the frozen salt by CH4 evolution. The solubility is given by log(wt % Al4C3) = 1.298 -1.l74 (wt ratio NaF/AlF3) independent of temperature in the range 985" to 1080°C. Additions ofA1203, .NaCl, CaF2, or LiF up to 10 wt pct do not affect the solubility, provided that LiF and CaF2 are replaced by equivalent NaFin calculating the ratio. The variation with ratio can be accounted for quantitatively on the hypothesis that the Mechanism of solution is Al4C3 + 2AIF3 = 3Al2CF2 since the solubility varies as (aAIF3) 2/3; Mechanisms involving C", C2- , AlC- , A12C2+, and Al2CF+are re-jected. At ratios above 1.5 truces of c;- are also present. It was noticed some years ago in this laboratory that carbon specimens made cathodic in a cryolite bath decrease in diameter over a period of time.' It was also found that cryolite which had been melted with aluminum in a graphite crucible was sometimes yellow, and that A14C3 could be seen intimately embedded in the cryolite crystals. CH, could be recovered by acid attack. There was thus reason to believe that A14C3 had a genuine solubility in molten cryolite, and the object of this work was to measure it. EXPERIMENTAL AND RESULTS A graphite crucible, 2 in. ID and 2.5 in. deep with a close-fitting lid, contained about 150 g of cryolite (plus additives) and about 20 g of 99.99 pct pure Al. It was placed in a vertical Inconel furnace tube, covered with refractory brick to provide thermal insulation, and the top of the tube was roughly sealed with disks of asbestos paper. An alumina tube led argon down to the level of the top of the crucible to expel air, and an alumina sheath with a Pt-10 pct Rh ther-mocouple inside was positioned between the crucible and the wall of the Inconel tube. The tube was heated in an electrical resistance furnace for the desired length of time; the refractory bricks were then removed, and the crucible was lifted out with tongs and quenched in water. After such a crucible was broken open it could be seen that its inner surface was yellow owing to the presence of A1,C3, and sometimes needle-like crystals could be observed (at X75 magnification) growing out into the nielt. The construction of Norris Dam, built by the Tennessee Valley Authority on the Clinch River, a tributary of the Tennessee River, involved the production of coarse and fine aggregate for approximately 1,000,000 cu. yd. of concrete. A hammer-mill plant for the manufacture of sand from quarried rock was indicated as the most economical method of providing this material. The abrasive character of the feed as compared to the average hammer-mill feed made it necessary to control operations rather closely, and this resulted in the accumulation of many data hearing on production and maintenance. This paper will deal only with three specific sets of data, accompanied by such general information as may be necessary to explain the conditions under which they were obtained and followed by discussions on the relation of silica content to hammer wear, comparative costs of slugger and stirrup hammers, and comparative costs of tool-steel and manganese-steel grate bars. Coarse Aggregate Aggregate for the concrete poured at Norris Dam came from a dolomite quarry within 2000 ft. of the west abutment of the dam. Geologically this rock is known as a Knox dolomite. THE coal industry in Alabama, centered in Birmingham, has pioneered coal-beneficiation practice in the United States. The nature of the coal seams and mining methods employed have necessitated use of equipment and methods best adapted to the local conditions. Although all of the 30 or more coal seams now being mined in the state receive beneficiation, only the three most important producers of coking coals, the Pratt, Mary Lee and Black Creek, are discussed in detail. Nature of the seams, washability characteristics and equipment used are given as examples of the extent of work and progress in this field. The coal seams in Alabama are relatively thin and pitching, making mining difficult and expensive. Most of them are characterized by thin partings of rock or shale in the seam itself, as well as laminations of bone and rash. Mechanical mining methods have increased the occlusions from roof and floor to such an extent that nearly all the coal mined in the state must receive some treatment before it can be put on the market. During the year ending Sept. 30, 1943,1 18,129,792 tons of coal were mined in the state and 14,364,177 tons, or 79.2 per cent, received treatment. Excluding from the total the 1,223,014 tons produced by small wagon mines and the hand-picked lump coal, the amount receiving beneficiation would be more than 90.00 per cent. This is, by far, greater than in any other coal-producing state. The earliest record of coal beneficiation in Alabama was the installation in 1890 of an experimental Lung washer by Alexander Cunningham, for the Sloss Iron and Steel Co. at its blast furnace in Birmingham .2 In 1894 the Jeffrey Manufacturing Co. introduced the English Robinson washer, a combination of a hydraulic classifier and centrifugal machine. Erskine Ramsay, who has contributed so much to the coal industry, saw its possibilities as well as its mechanical defects and soon had his inventive mind at work. He added a sludge tank of his own design, and many Robinson-Ramsay washers were installed in Alabama and other states. The Stewart jig appeared in 1900, followed by the Montgomery jig in 1910 and both have found extensive use. Increased interest in this field led to new designs, such as the American, Elmore; Burke and Faust. The first Baum-type Norton jig was operated in 1930 and within the last five years six large installations of this type have been made by the McNally-Pittsburg, Jeffrey and Link-Belt Companies. Wet-washing tables were introduced in 1922 but not extensively used until recently. The two most popular types are the Deister-Overstrom and Deister Plat-O. INTRODUCTION This discusses some of the economic risks and uncertainties which face any company investing in new mineral ventures. These differ mainly in degree rather than kind from other large capital intensive projects, except that economic risks are compounded with technical risks. Mines face a wide variety of physical risks, and in addition the ore reserves may not prove as ample, nor as amenable to treatment as the feasibility studies indicate. On the economic front, mineral projects are subject to risks of fluctuating prices and sales volumes, no matter where they are located, or how they are financed. Typically, they are heavy users of capital compared with their owners' internally generated funds. Long term debt of various types is still the favoured form of finance. A project's currencies and cost often differ from each other and from those of the parent company. Facing up to the various risks associated with fluctuating and uncertain revenues, interest rates and exchange rates are amongst the hardest tasks for natural resource companies. ATTITUDES TO THE MINING INDUSTRY Some have questioned whether the game itself is now worth playing. They have argued that the mining industry's mediocre rewards in the past decade have been insufficient, compared with the risks involved. They can see no prospect of dramatic improvement in the next decade. Demand is highly cyclical and tends to grow less rapidly than economic activity, as a whole. Barriers to entry are low in most mineral markets, but impediments to exit can be substantial. Exit is especially problematic in those minerals where there are large state shareholdings and/or where less developed countries are major producers. The consequence is claimed to be an endemic tendency to excess capacity, and prices barely adequate to cover marginal cash costs. Many of the petroleum companies that moved into mining with such high expectations in the late 1970s have retreated, often bearing the scars of heavy losses. Individual shareholders, taken collectively, place low valuations on their investments in mining companies. The price/earnings ratios of the major mineral producing companies are low compared with their historical averages and with those of other industries. Edward Leonce Dufourcq, mining engineer, President of Dufourcq & Co., Inc., New York, and Assistant General Manager of the Teziutlan Copper Co., New York, was attacked by bandits and mortally wounded on Wednesday, Apr. 16, while trying out a' gasoline motor car on a line of railroad between Teziutlan and the company's mine, twelve miles away. Word of his death was received Friday by Mrs. Effie Mason Dufourcq of 227 Riverside Drive and by D. C. Brown, Vice-president of the Teziutlan Copper Co.

Here is a report on two longwall operations, one which started up in 1956, the other in 1962. Thermodynamic data for the stable carbides and oxides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten have been critically eualuuted and are used to determine the stable condensed phases at 1 atm total pressure in each metal-carbon-oxygen system. Pourbaix-Ellingham diagrams have been constructed and are used to estimate the minimum temperatures neces.see)*y to oblain these metals by corbolhermic redlrction under reduced pressures. USING recently reported data for the carbides and oxides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, the stable phases in the Group VI metal-carbon-oxygen systems at specific temperatures and pressures can be determined. The thermodynamically stable regions in each metal-carbon-oxygen system can be completely pictured using a Pourbaix-Ellingham diagram in which the two coordinates are oxygen potential (-RT In Po2) and temperature. Worrell and chipman' have described and constructed such diagrams for the metal-carbon-oxygen systems of vanadium, columbium, and tantalum. Downing2 has used similar diagrams to provide a description of the reactions in submerged arc furnaces. One of the examples which he cited was the Cr-C-O system; however, an improved diagram is presented in this paper using recently obtained data for the carbides of chromium. Although some of the oxides and carbides of the Group VI metals exist over slight ranges of composition,3 all solid phases are represented as stoi-chiometric compounds in the subsequent diagrams. Any error introduced into the calculated equilibria by neglecting the compositional variation of these phases is less than the uncertainty in the thermodynamic data. In a Pourbaix-Ellingham diagram for a three-component system, the phase rule requires that at equilibrium four condensed phases specify a point, three condensed phases determine a line, and two condensed phases define an area. To obtain a well-defined area at high oxygen potentials and teniperatures, the initial carbon to oxygen mole ratio is specified to be more than sufficient to reduce the oxide but not enough to convert all the metal to carbide. Thus, the lowest regions in the subse- quent Pourbaix-Ellingham diagrams represent areas in which the metal and its carbide are the stable condensed phases. Cr-C-O SYSTEM A) Thermodynamic Data. To simplify the subsequent calculations, all thermodynamic data are presented in the form of linear Gibbs-energy-of-formation* equations which were derived for the temperature range 505° to 2000°K and are reasonably accurate over the entire temperature ranges of the diagrams. The thermodynamic data for the compounds occurring in the Cr-C-O system are summarized in Table I. Several volatile chromium oxides have been reported,4 but their influence is negligible in the Cr-C-O system. Thermodynamic data for CO and CO2 were taken from the compilation of Coughlin.5 The only solid chromium oxide sufficiently stable to exist below 1800°K in the Cr-C-O system is Cr2Os.11 The Gibbs-energy-of-formation equation for Cr2O3 was obtained by revising the data tabulated in Coughlin,5 using the heat of formation of ah' and the high-temperature thermal data for chromium.7 In 1953 Richardson8 re-evaluated the original work of Kelley and coworkers,9 who measured the thermodynamic properties of the chromium carbides. However, the high-temperature equilibrium results of Boericke9 yield values for ?G°f of Cr2O3 which are 2 kcal more positive than the accepted data. His results for the chromium carbides are based on the same questionable equilibria. Gleiser10 recently determined the Gibbs energy of formation of Cr3C2 and the equation in Table I was calculated from her data and the thermal data of Kelley and coworkers.9 Thermodynamic data for the Cr7C3 and Cr23C6 carbides were obtained by combining the Cr3C2 data

The zero-points-of-charge of apatite, calcite, and fluorite are pH 6.4, 10.8, and 10.0, respectively. Scheelite is negatively charged above at least pH 3. In this article, the flotation responses of these minerals in the presence of potassium oleate and sodium silicate are described and compared with electrokinetic data. Colloidal silica appears to be the species principally responsible for calcite depression, while silicate anion is the species responsible for fluorite depression. Additions as high as 1 x 10-3 mole/liter silicate have no effect on the flotation responses of apatite and scheelite. Selective flotation of nonmetallic minerals is difficult to achieve with fatty acids or soaps by themselves. As a result, specific reagents are added to aid these separations, and one of the reagents commonly employed for this purpose is sodium silicate. Flotation separations of various calcium-bearing minerals such as fluorite from calcite1-3 and scheelite from calcite2,4 and apatite,2,5 for example, almost always involve the use of sodium silicate. The mechanisms by which sodium silicate functions as a depressant are still not understood, probably for a number of reasons. For one thing, the dissolution process of sodium silicate is complex, giving rise to a number of ionic and colloidal species.' Moreover, the type and concentration of these species depend on the ratio of Na2O to SiO2, the concentration of sodium silicate, and the pH of the system.' At the present time, it is not known which species, colloidal silica or silicate anion, is responsible for depression. If colloidal silica is the species that is adsorbing, then adsorption must occur by electrostatic attraction between the colloid and the mineral surface. Silicate anion, on the other hand, may adsorb either physically or chemically. The objective of this paper is to determine first the active species of sodium silicate and then the conditions under which this species will adsorb and function as a depressant. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND METHODS Pure samples of apatite (Durango), calcite (Iceland-spar), fluorite, and scheelite were used in this investigation. Pure potassium oleate was used as collector, while reagent-grade HC1 and KOH were employed for pH adjustment. The sodium silicates used were samples obtained from the Philadelphia Quartz Co. In one series of experiments, various sodium silicates containing different ratios of SiO2 to Na2O were added to calcite systems. These sodium silicates contained SiO2-to-Na2O ratios of 3.75 to 1, 3.22 to 1, 2.40 to 1, and 1.60 to 1. All other experiments were conducted with the sodium silicate containing the ratio of 3.22 to 1, which is the one that is normally used in industry. Flotation experiments were conducted with 21/2-g charges of 48 x 150-mesh material in conductivity water with an apparatus and technique described previously. Electrokinetic experiments were conducted with both a Zeta Meter and streaming potential apparatus. Particle size was 48 x 65 mesh for the streaming potential experiments. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The first series of experiments involved flotation of scheelite in the absence and presence of sodium silicate. As shown in Fig. 1, flotation response was not affected with even the relatively high addition of 1 x 10-3 mole per liter sodium silicate. Interestingly though, no flotation was effected below pH 6 with this collector addition. The responses of apatite to flotation under these same conditions are given in Fig. 2. Similarly, no depression was obtained in basic media under these conditions. Similar experiments were conducted with fluorite, and in this case, depression was noted above about pH 11 with 1 x 10-3 mole per liter sodium silicate (Fig. 3). When calcite was floated with these same levels of addition of sodium silicate, essentially no flotation was possible above pH 7 (Fig. 4). A Technique for the Preparation of Thin Films of Two-Phase Alloys Suitable for Use in Transmission Electron Microscopy In order to obtain foil sufficiently thin to permit transmission electron microscopy of two-phase alloys, particularly alloys in which the second phase is present as a very finely dispersed second phase, a technique has been developed to permit the thinning of these materials without either the large degree of pitting present in the electrochemical or chemical thinning process or the slicing of the second phase particles accompanying the mi-crotoming process. The metal or alloy to be thinned is first ground to initial sheet thickness of approximately 0.002 in. by hand grinding on 4/0 emery paper. This starting sheet of material is then reduced in cross section by an air-abrasion technique using an S. S. White dental abrasive unit. This unit consists of a supply of compressed CO, which provides a stream of high velocity gas impinging on the metal surface. Incorporated in the machine is a hopper-type of device in which fine abrasive particles of alumina are introduced into this high velocity gas stream. The abrasive particles are irregular in shape, approximately 30 across. If any particles are introduced into the sample during thinning, they should be readily observable. Impingement of this gas abrasive mixture on the metal surface causes rapid removal of the metal in a rather uniform manner. The rates of metal removal may be adjusted by both regulating the gas pressure and amount of abrasive material introduced into the gas stream. By moving the gas stream abrasive mixture slowly about the specimen or sheet surface, a large area of the sheet may be uniformly reduced to a thickness which is then suitable for use in transmission electron microscopy. Attendant with this metal removal is a result in cold working of the metal surface due to the impingement of the abrasive particles. The resultant foils, therefore, if made from materials which are desirable to view in the annealed condition, have to be subsequently heat treated. If the alloy from which these foils have been made has been initially heavily worked or deformed during manufacture, then no subsequent heat treatment is, necessary as in the case of the SAP-type alloys. Following this initial abrasive thinning technique, the material is then given a final electropolish which is just sufficient to remove any oxide which has formed on the metal surface during the abrasion technique. Care has to be exercised in this technique to make sure that none of the attendant problems associated with the chemical or electrochemical removal process are encountered. An electrolyte solution which has been found suitable for aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP materials is one containing 78 ml of perchloric acid, 120 ml of distilled water, 700 ml of ethanol, and 100 ml of butylcellosolve. The current density used is 1 amp per sq cm and a polishing time of 3 sec on each side of the foil is used. Extreme care must be used in choosing the current density and time to ensure that just the oxide film on the specimen is removed. Times or current density which are greater than this will lead to perforation of the film due to the removal of the A1,0, particles or a complete loss of the film due to complete solution of the matrix. Once the oxide film is removed the specimens must be kept in alcohol until placed in the microscope to prevent any further oxidation. Fig. 1 shows -an electron micrograph at X28,000 of a thin foil of an aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-type alloy prepared using this technique. The alloy consists of a matrix of commercial purity aluminum containing a very finely dispersed second phase of aluminum oxide flakes. In the electron micrograph, the dark patches are the aluminum oxide particles. The lighter portions of the micrograph are the aluminum matrix. Within the aluminum matrix, the dislocation structure of the alloy is clearly visible. This structure consists of intersecting twin boundaries and single dislocations. No abrasive particles were observed in the samples. In addition, thin films of commercial purity aluminum were prepared using this method and observed in the electron microscope. Here also, there was no evidence of abrasive particles introduced in the samples. The technique presented provides a satisfactory method for the production of thin films of aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-type alloys for use in transmission electron microscopy where none of the usual thinning techniques appears to be satisfactory.

That variations in the humidity of the air and in the moisture content of a mixture of broken solids being separated electrostatically cause trouble is not new.' Much of the reputation for unreliability commonly ascribed to the electrostatic separation processes is probably due to this one factor alone. Some operators dry thoroughly before separating; and while this is good in many instances, there are others in which it is not the remedy for trouble. Some mixtures behave best in very dry air and with the mixtures fed to the separator while hot to reduce the adsorbed water content. On the other hand, an overdried mixture on coming to equilibrium with more humid air, has been known to take up moisture selectively on one family of particles, as of coal in the presence of slate and clay, and give sharper electrostatic separation. From these observations it is concluded that there is a permissible moisture content for a particle and also for the atmosphere surrounding it, if in equilibrium, at which the particle will have a conductivity or cntact potential2-4 that is ideal for electrostatic separation. This permissible moisture content varies between a wide range of limits for the different materials that are are and with the kind of electrostatic separating process used. Water can be present as a result of adsorption and condensation from the atmosphere, as an accumulation before or during mining, or as a residue from a previous process step. The water may exist as a liquid film or as an adsorbed layer of vapor. If the water exceeds permissible limits it must be removed. Its state determines the method. Drying by evaporation is necessary for adsorbed water, for part of the liquid-film water (that is, up to several percent of the dry weight), and for free water in the internal structure. Large water contents may be removed by drainage Or filtration. At just what point mechanical removal should cease and drying by evaporation begin depends upon the method of mechanical removal and its cost. Particles can also be separated according to their differences in dielectric constant when suspended in a liquid of intermediate dielectric constant. Recovery of this liquid presents a a problem' Permissible Moisture The adsorbed moisture on the outer surface of minerals can be quickly removed or replaced. Accordingly, in speaking of adsorbed moisture contents, either that of the solid or that of the surrounding air may be considered, the two values being connected by a distribution coefficient which varies with the temperature. However, such a condition does not necessarily exist in processes where an initially dry material is suddenly introduced into an atmosphere having a partial pressure of water vapor or where a moist material is suddenly introduced into a dry atmosphere.
