IT is well known that plastic deformation alters many of the properties of a metal and subsequent heat-treatment partially or completely restores these properties.1 In the deformed or strained state, the metal is unstable and tends to change toward a condition called a "strain-free state." The transformation occurs through recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth-processes that may take place singly or in combination. The distortion of the lattice of an individual grain of a metal in a state of strain may be rather complex in nature, because plastic deformation produces: (I) dislocations within mosaic blocks; (2) elastic variations of the lattice spacings; and (3) gross alterations throughout the lattice, especially along slip planes, along composition planes between a grain and its mechanical twins, and along boundaries of deformation bands. These gross alterations are of the nature of bent planes or rotated regions of the crystal lattice and are revealed by a spread in the orientation of the grain. Although we cannot describe these strains and their formation accurately because of insufficient knowledge, we can, nevertheless, use the information as well as possible to obtain a better understanding of recovery processes. In recovery, the lattice of a grain is not made anew as it is in recrystallization, but is improved or mended in such a way that the basic structure remains unaltered. Until recently observations were that recovery produced no marked changes in the shapes of spots in Laue diffraction patterns, whereas recrystallization did, but now it is known for silicon ferrite2 that Laue spots may become quite sharp entirely through recovery. Consequently, the shape of Laue spots alone would not be a suitable test to distinguish between recovery and recrystallization. There is considerable evidence that the micro- structure usually does not change visibly during recovery. Absence of a visible change in the microstructure, therefore, provides a sufficient test of recovery in many cases. However, including this observation in a definition of recovery as a necessary condition (this is usually done) is unfortunate, because recovery may, as will become evident later, produce new grain boundaries that are visible not only in the microstructure but also in the macrostructure. For the present, therefore, let us say that a necessary condition for a process to be one of recovery is that the principal orientation or orientations of a deformed grain be essentially unchanged throughout the transformation toward the strain-free state. Several transformations may occur that fulfill this condition, and the nature of the distortion in a grain indicates what these must be if the lattice is to be mended in part or fully. LAST fall, having a number of ore samples from mine-development work carried on in spite of the "Revolution," I was forced to do my own assaying again, after a lapse of many years. This gave me an opportunity to build a furnace for crucible assaying, using wood for fuel, along lines which had been developing in my mind since the time 20 years ago, when as general factotum at a little mining camp in western Chihuahua, Mexico, I had converted a crucible charcoal furnace into one using the reverberatory principle. Wood-burning furnaces have been described in technical literature, but I believe the present application will prove helpful to those of the profession who are working in out-of-the-way places. The furnace is shown in detail in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. Remembering the trouble caused by stoking my first charcoal furnace too heavily, I fired this one with but a few sticks of wood at a time. By this method I could run out a charge of 12 crucibles in 30 to 35 min., using 50 sticks of ordinary stove wood. Later I fill up the firebox, holding about 40 sticks, get everything ready, put the crucibles into the melting chamber and "fire up." Just as soon as the fire is well started the draft door is closed and the furnace allowed to heat up slowly for 5 min. Then the draft is opened (the door to the ash-pit) and the fire allowed to roar, which it does. In 20 min. from the time the fire is lighted the fire door is opened, the fire stirred along the grates, and 5 or 6 more sticks of wood thrown in. In 25 min. from the start, the draft is closed again, the cover of the melting chamber pushed back and the charges poured. The melts will be found to be perfect, and the crucibles to pour absolutely clean, if everything has gone right, as will usually be the case. A new charge may be put in, and fired with S to 10 sticks of wood at a tine, and be ready to pour within 20 min.; but it is just as well to leave the crucibles in the melting chamber a full 2.5 min. By using 10 sticks of wood to start the fire and adding 5 sticks as often as needed, which will be as soon as the last sticks fed in are in perfect combustion, the smelting can be completed in from 30 to 35 min., using from 35 to 40 sticks of wood. I consider this to be the best method of stoking.

IINDUSTRY'S attention is now focused on the production of munitions thereby creating a demand for certain minerals which in prewar days were produced only in limited quantities. Now production of these minerals must he increased from the known deposits and new deposits must be found. Can geophysics help? "War minerals" such as tin, vanadium, tungsten, antimony, manganese, chromium, and cinnabar have no physical characteristics sufficiently different front the country rook to permit their direct location by ordinary geophysical methods. As already demonstrated in work on gold and oil, useful information may be obtained indirectly, however, outlining structural features or geological conditions favorable for the deposition of such ores or the accumulation of oil. Recently, more direct and truly qualitative methods have been brought into a useful and practical stage, and by the combined application of old and new methods a technique has been developed which, it is hoped, will be of importance in the search for these vital minerals.

CRUSHING has always been a major operation in the chemical and metallurgical industries, yet little is known about the theory of crushing, and today, the design of crushers is still based almost entirely on empirical knowledge and accumulated practical experience. In view of the increasing national need for the economic working of poorer grades of ores, the lack of a fundamental understanding of this unit operation hardly presents a satisfactory situation. Basic investigations of crushing have been concerned mainly with three phases of the problem, 1—the mechanism of the fracture process itself, 2— the particle size distribution of the crushed product, and 3—the relationship between the energy input and the amount of new surface produced. Probably adequate information on these phases will be required for a comprehensive understanding of the process of crushing. A bibliography covering these phases will be given as well as a review of the work done in recent years at the University of Minnesota on the relationship between the energy input for crushing and the amount of new surface produced. Fracture of Solids This phase of the crushing problem is the most fundamental because it is concerned with the actual mechanism of fracture. The main problems in a study of the fracture process are concerned with the questions of why and how fracture occurs and why there is such a discrepancy between the actual and theoretical energies needed in a fracture process. In considering the how of fracture, Poncelet40 carried Out experiments On the crushing of glass under compression. Actual photographs were taken of the glass plates in various stages of fracture-From these experiments Poncelet was able to postulate a probable mechanism of fracture. Probably because of the quantitative nature of the problem, considerable effort has been expended to find an explanation for the low tensile strength of materials and the conversely high energy for crushing. Tensile strengths are often only 1/500 of the theoretical while the energy for crushing is usually at least 500 times the theoretical. A review of the work to explain the low strength of glass is given by Weyl,52 in which the work of Griffith," Joffe,32 and Powell and Preston " are discussed. In a recent paper Seitz46 holds that the presence of flaws and fissures, as originally expounded by Griffith, is the most probable reason for the low strength of metals. Since a mass of data has been accumulated on the fracture strength of materials, several investigators have attempted to correlate this data in the form of an equation. Glathart and Preston," Taylor,40 Ponce-let,40 Machlin and Norwich," and Frederickson and Eyring,20 have all considered this problem, and the final relationship has always been that the stress for fracture is proportional to the logarithm of time. Murgatroyd30 arrived at a very similar relationship by a different method. The study of the fracture process has used many methods. Among some of these are the thermody-namic approach used by Furth21 which was based on the work of BornxL and later used by Saibel,43 and the statistical method applied by Fisher and Hollo-mon.10 In recent years metallurgists have concerned themselves with the problem of brittle .fracture as opposed to the usual plastic failure of metals. The great amount of interest shown is reflected by the number of contributors to the recent symposium on the fracture of metals.' INTRODUCTION General IT is general practice to evaluate the strength properties of a particular metal from its stress-strain [(S1 - E1]) curve obtained by means of a conventional tension test. Such a stress-strain curve, Fig I, illustrates two important properties of a metal, its ability to strain harden, and its ability to withstand a certain limiting stress, the "fracture stress,"[ (s'r)], and a certain limiting strain, the "ductility" [(e1)], before it fails by separation. These two fracturing characteristics are the coordinates of the point of fracture in Fig I. In the case of a metal which necks in a tension test, both the fracture stress and the ductility (measured in a tension test) are dependent upon (a) the shape of the neck and (b) average values of the stresses and strains over the cross section at the moment of fracture. However, for the purpose of this investigation, these average quantities, rather than the actual values, may be considered for reasons of simplicity. It appears that the conclusions also hold true if the analysis were carried out for actual values of fracture stress and ductility at the locus of failure. In this paper, the effects of straining (at room temperature) by various methods on [ ] the above metal characteristics, which were determined by subsequent tension tests will be discussed. According to our present knowledge, any such prestraining results in a stress-strain curve (in subsequent testing by tension), Fig 2, the general shape, or flow characteristics, of which can be derived from the original stress-strain curve of the unstrained metal minus a certain portion exhausted by the initial straining. This phenomenon is called strain hardening, and may be measured by the magnitude of the cut-off, or the "effective strain," from which the new curve must start in order to coincide in its plastic branch with the original stress-strain curve.

Statistical methods are becoming increasingly important for interpreting routine reports, or for analyzing special test data in industrial plants, such as steel plants. They have already become practically a necessity to the plant metallurgist. A paper by Chancellor, 1 written in 1933, gives many examples of the benefits the plant metallurgist can derive from the use of these methods. The present paper discusses applications of importance to many others who must analyze reports in the steel plant, as well as other examples of interest to metallurgists. Statistical Methods Logically Suited to Plant Problems.—Statistical methods are not new as a branch of mathematics. Until comparatively recently, however, practical applications were confined mainly to actuarial science, biology, and economics; fields in which an observed result is obviously influenced (and often determined) by a complicated set of variables more or less constantly tending to affect it. As pointed out by Daeves,2 a decade or more ago, problems in industry are basically similar to those in these other fields in that a given result is at least partly due to that chance combination of causes happening to be present at the time. When trying to do the same thing repeatedly, constant results are never attained; they vary about the desired result with more or less well defined mathematical regularity. Such a condition arises out of the great number of factors tending to affect the final result. If statistical methods are so valuable to the biologist or economist, why then should they not also be of great value to plant managers and engineers, and to all who must interpret reports from various sources in the industrial plant? Within the last few years, industry has become conscious of this situation, and the use of these methods has been rapidly expanding in such p1ants. C. H. MATHEWSON, New Haven, Conn. (written discussion *).-In a recent discussion of Dr. Jeffries' paper on tungsten,1 J. C. W. Humfrey,2 after taking exception to certain of the author's ideas relative to the cohesion of A and C metal, expresses the opinion that future research is likely to develop a method of preparing tungsten possessing "mechanical properties in line with those of other metals." The present paper by Dr. Jeffries begins with a determination of comparative properties of tungsten, copper, and iron, in which much dissimilarity is apparent, and ends with a coherent explanation as to why much of this dissimilarity is natural and inevitable, thereby supplying theoretical means for visualizing the changing properties of metals in general, once certain fundamental facts are known. The author's reasoning is primarily from the standpoint of the amorphous theory and his principal achievement is the development of an idea f differential cohesion according to conditions of temperature, etc., between A and C metal (which was first plainly suggested by Rosehain and Ewen, in their papers on Intercrystalline Cohesion of Metals) along with associated ideas, so as to give us a really useful working theory. I have come rather reluctantly to believe in the amorphous theory, or some theory admitting a modification of the ordinary crystalline phase so as to permit differential properties within the conglomerate, mainly because in no other way does it seem possible to account for observed changes of properties with temperature, etc. The very best illustration f the competency f the amorphous theory in this respect is seen in this and other recent papers by the author. All fractures through normal or healthy metal that have been preceded by deformation are supposed, by Dr. Jeffries, to take place either through the amorphous phase or at certain boundaries between amorphous and crystalline material; his reference to fractures, both members of which are similar in appearance and do not reveal a preexisting coarse-grained structure because of a coating of amorphous metal, indicates his preference for the former interpretation.

(written discussion).-The experience of users of pulverized fuel in metallurgical work, particularly for open-hearth furnaces, has demonstrated that high ash and sulfur in pulverized fuel are a detriment, the sulfur in the coal entering into the finished product; hence, in this class of work it is extremely important, when pulverized coal is to be used, that the coal be selected with care, and only those having low percentages of sulfur be used, in combination with proper means for combustion. I have found that no general statement can be made as to the cost of pulverized coal, each installation being an individual engineering problem and necessitating a varying capital expenditure; as each installation has its own power cost, the actual cost of pulverizing varies between wide margins. It has been found that no general rule can he laid down as to either fineness or dryness; for some uses a wide range is permissible in both factors, while some classes of fuel require different treatment from others. Anthracite, coke breeze, and lignite ash will, under certain conditions, form slag, the melting point of the ash from fuel of this character being practically the same as of that from bituminous coal; furnace temperatures above the melting point of ash must therefore cause the formation of slag. However, it should he noted that furnace temperatures attainable with this class of fuel are not usually so high as those from bituminous coal, which probably explains the statement that the former do not slag. In a well designed furnace, temperatures above 2250° F. (1235° C.) will be obtained with that class of fuel, and slags will be formed. Too much attention apparently has been centered on high CO2 contents of stack gases. A high percentage of C02 is frequently obtained at the expense of the brickwork, the furnace temperature being increased by diminishing the excess air; a high percentage of C02 thus simply means a small proportion of 02.

The general principles of the gas-lift will not be described in this paper. Only specific details that have not been fully discussed in previous papers, or results that do not fully coincide with conditions previously described, will be dealt with. The principal points to be emphasized and for which supporting data are furnished are as follows: 1. Gas-lift installations usually have comparatively high efficiencies as compared with standard pumping equipment, when reduced to a basis of barrels produced per horsepower installed. 2. Advantages of high-pressure plants from the standpoint of operating efficiency and for the application of the gas-lift early in the life of flowing wells. 3. Evidence of increased ultimate yield through conservation of gas by the gas-lift. 4. Possibility of development of new equipment to increase efficiency of the gas-lift. 5. Indications of the advantages of repressuring as a means of stabilizing gas-lift wells and as a means of increasing ultimate yields. TyPes of Installation The gas-lift installations of the more important companies in California have been of the central-plant type wherever field conditions would permit. This has resulted in greater flexibility and lower installation costs per well than could be obtained with individual well units. In general discussions of the gas-lift method of production, the installation costs are frequently referred to as being too high for economical operation. If the field conditions are carefully analyzed and the plant designed with the idea of obtaining high operating efficiencies, the installation cost per well can be lowered sufficiently to compare favorably with individual well-pumping units, when the operating advantages are considered. Much greater production per horsepower can be obtained with the gas-lift than is possible with pumping equipment. The effect of Cr2O3 on melting relations of iron oxide at oxygen pressures slightly above those prevailing in contact with metallic iron has been determined. Liquidus and solidus temperatures of wüstite are raised by the addition of Cr2O3, from 1385°C for pure iron oxide to 1420°C at the peri-ledie point where wüstite, iron chromite, liquid, and gas coexist in equilibrium under the atmospheric conditions used in the present investigation (CO2/H2 = 1). It has been shown in a previous investigation1 that the liquidus and solidus temperatures of iron oxide are drastically increased by the addition of Cr2O3 under the relatively oxidizing conditions prevailing in air. This is to be expected in view of the easy substitution of cr3+ for Fe3+ in crystalline oxide structures which are stable at high oxygen pressures, as demonstrated for instance by the completeness of the solid solution series Fe2O3-Cr2O3 at high temperatures (>1000°C). The stable phase of iron oxide at oxygen pressures approximating those prevailing when metallic iron is present is wüstite. This phase, although commonly represented by the simplified formula FeO for sake of convenience, in reality has a defect structure in which a part of the iron ions are present as Fe3+. It is to be expected that at least a limited amount of cr3 ions will substitute for Fe in this structure when Cr2O3 is added to wüstite. Depending on the ease of this substitution in comparison with that of cr3 substitution for Fe in iron oxide-Cr2O3 liquids under the same atmos- pheric conditions, the liquidus and solidus temperatures of wüstite may increase or decrease upon addition of Cr2O3. The methods of establishing these melting relations and the results obtained are presented in the following. I) EXPERIMENTAL METHOD 1) General Procedure. The quenching technique was used in this study. Oxide mixtures were heated at chosen constant temperatures in an atmosphere consisting of equal parts of CO2 and H2 until equilibrium was established among gas and condensed phases. The samples were then quenched in mercury to room temperature, and the phases present were determined by microscopic and X-ray investigation. 2) Preparation of the Mixtures. Starting mixtures were prepared by weighing and thoroughly mixing Fe2O3 and Cr2O3, or wüstite and Cr2O3. The Fe2O3 and Cr2O3 used were "Baker Analyzed" reagent grades, whereas wüstite of composition was synthesized by reducing Fe203 at 1325°C in an atmosphere consisting of equal parts of CG andHz. In order to avoid contact with crucibles, the equilibration runs were made with small pellets suspended from thin (-0.004-in.) platinum wires. Mixtures made from FOs and Cr203 were readily pelletized at a pressure of 500 atm in a 9.5-mm die, whereas mixtures made from wüstite and Cr203 when treated identically were too weak for handling. In order to obtain a stronger product, these pellets were sintered by heating for 2 min at -1200°C in the same atmosphere as was subsequently used for the equilibration runs (CG/H2 = 1:1). During the sintering, these pellets were wrapped in thin (0.0004-in.) platinum foil, which was stripped off before the equilibration runs. In order to reduce the time needed for equilibrium to be attained, preliminary equilibration of relatively large pellets of each mixture was carried out at -1200°C for 4 to 12 hr. Smaller pellets

The New River coal-field embraces that portion of the Appalachian coal formation which lies on the waters of the New River, principally in Fayette and Raleigh counties, West Virginia, covering a strip of territory about forty miles in length along the line of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad from Quinnimont to Kanawha Falls, where the New River empties into the Kanawha, the railroad following the banks of the river the whole distance. (See map.) Between Kanawha Falls and the Valley of the Ohio lies the great Kanawha region, and these two coal-fields possess a greater variety of coal than can be found in any other portion of the country, enabling them to furnish the best fuels for any of the various demands of manufacture or domestic use, the Kanawha region possessing many varieties of gas, hard splint, and cannel coal, and the New River region bituminous and semi-bitnminous, steam and coking coal. The New River, in its westward course towards the Kanawha, has cut its way entirely through the Sera1 conglomerate or No. XII of the Pennsylvania Reports, the Umbral red shales of No. XI appearing at the foot of the mountains at the eastern end of the region at Quinnimont, one of the upper ledges of the Conglomerate forming the summits; while at the western end, at Kanawha Falls, the top of the Conglomerate is nearly down to the level of the river, a portion of the " Lower Productive Measures" forming the greater portion of the mountains. These mountains rise abruptly from the banks of the river to a height of from 800 to 1200 feet, leaving only here and there narrow strips of bottom land, a few acres in extent; and as the measures consist principally of hard sandstones, shales, and conglomerates lying ill a nearly horizontal position, the mountain-sides are very precipitous, with many long and high cliffs, which, with the great height of the mountains, give the country a very rugged appearance. R. B. T. KILIANI, New York, N. Y.-I wish to present some figures based upon actual observation extending over a few months time which seem to prove the author's conclusions. It is a comparison of two machines operating on the same ore, in the same plant, one taking the undersize of ½ -in. screen and the other taking the undersize of 8-mesh. Each of the machines was first operated as a pebble mill, with flint pebbles, in open circuit, then with metal pebbles in open circuit and, finally with metal pebbles in closed circuit. For the first case, the percentage of oversize on 48-mesh, Tyler screen, in the discharge, varied, in the mill taking ½ -in- feed, from 37.2 to 19.9 per cent. The second mill, taking the 8-mesh feed, had a variation in oversize on 48-mesh, from 36.8 per cent: to 0.5 per cent.; so it is seen there is considerable variation in these figures. I have computed the tons per kilowatt-day reduced through 48-mesh for each machine under each one of these conditions, giving 6 sets of figures. The first of these I called 1.0 and determined the ratio of the others to this.. In the snipe way, I figured the relative mechanical efficiency according to Kick's law, using' the figures given by Mr. Taggart in his paper, for ordinal numbers of the Tyler screens. I have also figured the efficiency in mesh-tons per horsepower according to Gates' method by plotting the screen analyses of feed and product and multiplying the area by a constant dependent on the scale used. The commercial efficiency of tons per kilowatt-day reduced through 48-mesh checks very closely with the efficiency by Rittinger's law, within 1 per cent. except in one case. Remoteness of western Canadian coals has always been a barrier to the use of Canadian coals domestically. However, the world energy crunch, increased mining costs, stricter environmental controls, labor shortages, etc., are such that by 1980 a shortfall from traditional U.S. sources will prevail. Of necessity, Canada must then bring western coals east, requiring major new transportation initiatives. CN, CP Rail and Neptune Terminals are proceeding jointly with the design of a $30 million, fully automated, coal terminal at Thunder Bay. This element forms part of a $400 million integral transportation system to open new lines, improve trackage, acquire rolling stock and ships, for an initial capacity of 3 million tpy.
