WIDESPREAD experimentation has been conducted in recent years to devise a means of preventing intergranular corrosion in austenitic chromium-nickel steels of the 18 per cent chromium-8 per cent nickel type. Additions of titanium to these steels have been used commercially to overcome this difficulty, as advocated by Krupp of Germany, and the latest literature reference concerning improved details of this method is the article by Bain, Aborn and Rutherford.1 Extensive work by the present authors has shown columbium also to be a particularly valuable agent for inhibiting intergranular corrosion. This paper does not deal with steels that are largely or wholly aus-tenitic ; it is limited to a discussion of the results obtained through the use of titanium and columbium in plain high-chromium steels. For many years titanium has been used commercially by some steelmakers as a cleanser, and to a lesser extent as a hardener, but then in greater per-centages. The results of the work to be described disclose that titanium and columbium in proper proportions act as effective softeners in the high-chromium steels. It is well known that chromium intensifies the hardening effect of carbon in steel; it imparts pronounced air-hardening properties within a rather wide range of chromium content; it provides increased ductility in steels of given strength and hardness; and it enhances resistance to corrosion and oxidation at elevated temperatures to a marked degree. However, in applications requiring a combination of some of these valu-able properties great hardness is frequently a detriment rather than a merit. When the objective is a soft and ductile steel having optimum corrosion resistance, the producer strives for a carbon content as low as commercially practicable.

In recent years, the problem of damage to coke-oven walls by expanding coal charges undergoing carbonization has engaged great attention on the part of research workers in this field, and has led to the development of many devices for estimating these pressures.l-14 Only in Russell's method" and in the Koppers ovens7 are conditions quite similar to those in commercial ovens. Tests even in these ovens are empirical because no information has been published to permit an evaluation of "scale effects." Owing to the relatively large wall area in these test ovens, the average wall pressure determined may be lower than that existing in localized areas. This factor may be compensated for in part by the testing of coal charged into the test oven at a bulk density that is as high as the highest that is believed to exist in commercial ovens. Both of these lacks might be filled by the development of an adequate gauge for the direct measurement of wall pressure exerted by the charge in commercial coke ovens in normal operation. Previous attempts to elaborate such instruments7,15 have resulted in units which, because they had to be water-cooled, probably produced changes in the conditions of carbonization, and which had to be removed from the oven before carbonization was complete, to avoid their destruction. Late in 1941 the Coal Research Laboratory undertook to develop such a gauge, in which gas pressure was balanced against the charge pressure and which thus would not require water cooling, on a suggestion made in 1937 by one of the present authors and William B. Warren, a former member of the Laboratory staff. The gauge heads themselves were to be simple and cheap enough so that they might be discarded after each run if seriously damaged. This would permit them to be left in place throughout the carbonizing period, when they could be pushed out with the coke. The basis of the design, of which the latest exemplification is shown in Fig. I, was that as the internal gas pressure within a flexible metal envelope was increased, the flexible wall would move away from a stop when the gas pressure just overbalanced the charge pressure. If the stop were an insulated electrical contact, the point of balance could be indicated by the breaking of an electric circuit. It was anticipated that, while the instrument must operate at high temperature, the presence of a strongly reducing atmosphere throughout the carbonizing period would so reduce the danger of scaling that mild steel could be used for the gauge. This expectation has been justified. Certain influences of oxygen on iron have been known for many years and it has always been considered one of the worst enemies of the iron and steel founders. Nobody had a good word for it, hence little was done to make use of this oxygen. In all the fields of foundry practice, the desideratum was "melt without oxidation of the metal." In the consideration of the influence of oxygen on cast iron, we must not confuse this condition with oxidized iron caused by poor melting conditions, due to a high bed, heavy charges, low coke ratio, excessive melting rate, high blast, or poor charging. It is admitted that oxygen absorbed by iron melted under these conditions has a deleterious effect on the properties of the iron. The writer has had experience both in the melting under such poor conditions and in remedying these bad conditions and considers the product far inferior to iron melted under normal conditions. As stated by Dr. Richard Moldenke,l such iron has a higher melting point and high combined carbon, is sluggish, and contains slags and oxides in solution in the liquid, causing slag inclusions and gas occlusions, 'thus producing defective castings. This oxidized condition cannot be counteracted or removed by any of the known deoxidizers; it can be remedied only by proper melting conditions. Such iron is redly burned, whereas the iron considered in this paper was melted under normal conditions with moderate blast, correct bed height, light charges of iron, and low coke consumption and is not in this category at all. In 1914, the late J. E. Johnson, Jr., startled the metallurgists of the . world when he published his results on the advantages of oxygen on cast iron.2 His work is so convincing and so logical, in spite of the common and well-established notions on the subject, that nobody has been able to refute a single argument. Such an eminent authority on iron and steel metallurgy as Prof. H. M. Howe has accepted the work in all its details in his latest book.3 The work of J. E. Johnson, Jr., has revolutionized the metallurgy of cast iron and it seems apparent that all future work must include an oxygen determination just as we include silicon, sul-

IN 1947 a large low grade deposit of uranium was located in the northwest corner of Saskatchewan, in the Beaverlodge property of Eldorado Mining & Refining Ltd. Most of the values occur as thin seams and as coatings on other minerals, and the ore, which is light and friable, is not amenable to the usual gravity methods of concentration. The acid leaching process developed to retreat the company's Port Radium tailings was also impractical, as the percentage of carbonates is high and the percentage of sulphides relatively low. Construction of the mill building and installation of equipment, both scheduled for 1952, awaited selection of a satisfactory ore dressing process on or before Oct. 1, 1951. An extensive research program on dressing of ores from the Ace mine therefore was undertaken by the Mines Branch in Ottawa, a research team at the University of British Columbia, and an ore dressing group at the company's Port Hope refinery. Pilot plant operations were conducted at the Ottawa plant of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. under the general direction of C. S. Parsons, consultant on metallurgy and ore dressing for Eldorado. In mid-September, having compared results of the several research programs, Dr. Parsons recommended a process employing a carbonate or basic leach. He reported that, while the chemistry of the process had been proved, engineering of the flowsheet was incomplete, and he suggested that under normal conditions further pilot plant work at the Ace mine might be profitable. However, since this would involve a delay of 12 to 18 months in bringing the property into operation, he recommended that design of the concentrator proceed immediately. Concentrator capacity was determined by two considerations: 1) the amount of ore then available and 2) the expectation that continued improvements would be made in the ore dressing process as a result of the intensive research being carried out by the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys. SUBJECT to formal Board approval in September, AIME dues will continue indefinitely at the present scale of $20 for Members and Associate Members; and $12 for Junior Members for the first six years of such membership, thereafter $17. That is the wish of the Board of Directors and the will of the membership, as expressed in the recent referendum. Though the official returns, as reported by the tellers, are not available as this is written, the data are sufficiently complete to give the results to the nearest percent. The total vote was approximately 93 pct for continuance of the present scale. Metals Branch members voted about 94 pet for continuance; Mining Branch members slightly less than that; and Petroleum Branch members about 91 pct. As in the referendum of 1949, there was no particular difference of opinion on the question of dues as between the three Branches. The percentage of ballots returned was about 61 pct, only slightly more than in the 1949 referendum. But the affirmative vote was much greater, 93 pct against 78 pet in the earlier referendum. Looked at another way, a majority of those to whom ballots were sent, 56 pct, voted to continue the present scale of dues, whereas only 46 1/2 pct of those canvassed voted to raise the dues in the previous referendum. But approximately 600 , members expressed their opinion that the dues should go back to $15 for Members and Associate Members and to $10 and $15 for Junior Members. This is a substantial group of members who either do not think they are getting their money's worth from AIME membership, or believe that a more businesslike conduct of Institute affairs should provide current services at less cost, or believe that more service is being provided for their dues than they need. As to the first point, it is probable that some members are not getting their money's worth. They perhaps have only a fringe interest in. AIME activities, or they do not or cannot participate in such activities at the Local Section, divisional, or national level, so that all they get out of the Institute is the monthly journal, which they do not have time to read. If they did read it intelligently, and acted upon the professional information thus gained, it is difficult to understand how one or more ideas cannot be gained that would be worth $20 to them professionally. But the 600 members who want lower dues offer a challenge to the Directors and to the staff to do a better job; to make Institute membership so rewarding that every. member will be thoroughly satisfied. Twenty 1935 to 1939 dollars are worth only $11.60 now, according to the latest government data, but that makes it all the more necessary for us all to appraise the value of what we buy. To the 93 pct of Institute members who expressed a vote of confidence, so to speak, the staff, and we feel sure the Directors as well, are most appreciative and thankful.

THE subject assigned is so broad that thorough discussion is well-night impossible within the space allotted, and further, few specific data are available upon which to predicate conclusions concerning the efficiency of present methods of distributing anthracite. This paper treats briefly the various agencies through which both primary and secondary distribution are effected, the methods of transportation and the general interrelation of production, demand, inventories and price. AVENUES OF DISTRIBUTION "Three distinct types of primary distribution are common in the marketing of anthracite. First, though not most important, is the sale by the producer, or operator, direct to the consumer. These sales, other than to employees and the local trade, are generally confined to steam sizes for industrial uses, and are consigned to the sidings or docks of the consumer. Sales of this type often are so closely priced to compete with oil and bituminous that the addition of even a small dealer's margin is sufficient to increase the cost to the point where the business might be lost. Second, the operator sells to a wholesaler or broker for subsequent resale, either to a retail dealer for clearance through his yard or direct to large consumers. Usually this method of distribution is employed by the smaller operators, who do not find it economically feasible to maintain extensive sales organizations. In most instances, the wholesaler retains some 5 per cent for his services, paid, of course, by the producing company whose anthracite he handles. He may, and frequently does, handle the output of several different companies, suited to the varying needs of the

A general survey of the mechanical properties of commercially pure beryllium fabricated from powder by vacuum hot pressing and other consolidation methods is presented. The effect of fabrication method, grain size, strain rate, and directionality upon both room and elevated temperature tensile properties is reported. BERYLLIUM metal, in spite of its rather restricted use, has been the object of attention for many researchers in the past half century. However, such work was performed on special experimental lots of metal made in small quantities by a variety of reduction methods. Not until 1946 was there a substantial production of beryllium metal, and not until 1950 was there a steady production of a commercially standard beryllium in the United States. This output was both the result of a requirement of the Atomic Energy Commission for a high grade beryllium of consistent quality and the development of a powder metallurgy process, by the Brush Beryllium Co., known originally as Process Q, which yielded a fine grained beryllium suitable for fabrication. Because this powder metallurgy product, known as QMV, superceded other types of metal made previously and represents the great majority of beryllium in use today, it seems worthwhile to present the results of studies on the mechanical properties of this metal as currently made. To the design engineer and the metallurgist, beryllium has extremely interesting properties. It is as light as magnesium alloys while having a stiffness modulus 40 pct greater than steel and a strength-weight ratio superior to titanium and aluminum alloys and aircraft steels. The melting point is high, 1287°C (2348°F), and it has good corrosion resistance both in air and water. Also, it is highly transparent to X-rays and has good heat and electrical conductivity (electric conductivity is greater than 40 pct of Cu). To the atomic energy program beryllium is considered a valuable material because of its low neutron-capture cross section and high neutron-scattering cross section which make it a good moderator and reflector for the lower velocity neutrons. A major technical difficulty limiting the use of beryllium, especially in structural applications, has been its notch sensitivity and consequent room temperature brittleness. Kaufmann, Gordon, and Lillie1 have reported their work on the mechanical properties of beryllium performed from 1946 to 1950. They studied the room and elevated temperature properties of cast and extruded beryllium and extruded electrolytic flake, Table I. Cast and extruded alloys of 85 to 99 pct Be were tested also. They found that extruded metal developed good strength and appreciable ductility in the extrusion direction and that thermal treatment and alloying provided little improvement in mechanical properties. They concluded that preferred orientation and fine grain size were the means of obtaining optimum tensile properties in beryllium. Other investigators have measured and commented on one of the most striking mechanical properties of beryllium, namely, its abnormally low Poisson's ratio.2 Udy, Shaw, and Boulger3 presented the latest published survey on properties of beryllium but their information is based only on published data available before April 1949 and cites little information on metal fabricated by powder metallurgy

SINCE Dr. St. Albans, in 1840, began to build successful watertube boilers—some of which are still in use—the gravity-return water-tube boiler has been built in many forms, more or less familiar to all who have studied the subject. A single firm in this country published recently a pamphlet, showing some fourteen modifications of their boiler during about as many years. There were hence available to the thoughtful inventor of this latest form many data showing what forms were to be avoided, as well as the effects sure to follow certain erroneous methods of construction in the older types. The high-temperatzrre solulion calorimeter has been modified and an extension dynamic analysis of i/s transient behavior has provided an improved basis for interpretation of the experimental data. The partial molar heats of mixing, Him, of aluminum, copper, and silicon in the corresponding binary liquid-iron alloys haz,e been measured directly at 1600°C. The resulls in kcal per g-alom are: THE high-temperature1,2 solution calorimeter was planned and designed to obtain directly the partial molar heat of solution of solute elements in a variety of liquid metals that might serve as solvents. Results obtained in the temperature range of 1000° to 1200°C were described in the two earlier publications. However, a long-term goal in the program has been to obtain measurements at 1600°C of the heats of solution of elements in liquid iron. Hence, subsequent to the work last reported,2 and based on the experience of the first two studies, the calorimeter system has been modified and operated at 1600°C to obtain measurements on the Fe-Si, Fe-A1, and Fe-Cu systems. This paper reports the results of the work. THE MODIFIED SYSTEM It was clear from the earlier results that the most precise measurements can be obtained with the high-temperature solution calorimeter when the solution time is less than approximately 30 sec. This can be achieved only when the bath temperature, Tb, is above the melting (liquidus) temperature of the solute material being dropped. A second point of importance is that the refractories used earlier liberated considerable water so that, although the oxygen potential of the atmosphere in the system was satisfactory for work with nickel and copper, it was too high for work with iron, silicon, and so forth. Third, for work at 1550" to 1650°C, an improved temperature-sensing unit is needed. The modified calorimeter in its latest form is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The refractory brick and the Kanthal-Super heating elements which formed the furnace for heating the solute addition have been replaced by a smaller resistance-heated tube furnace which is insulated with bubble-grain alumina. A more elaborate gas purification system was installed to maintain a satisfactorily low oxygen potential in the atmosphere of the calorinieter chamber and of the solute addition furnace. As was the case in the earlier work, at the beginning of a run the calorimeter chamber is evacuated and then filled with purified argon so that a total pressure slightly in excess of 1 atm is maintained during the run. When either of the furnaces within the enclosure attains a red heat, 6 pct H2 is added to the atmosphere. Throughout the run, gas from the calorimeter is circulated through a de-oxidation system at the rate of approximately 5 standard liters per min; the changeover time for the gas within the calorimeter enclosure is approximately 1 hr. The essential stages of the deoxidation system are: a copper furnace at 600°C, a drying tube of anhydrite, and a titanium furnace at 800°C. The oxygen potential of the gas stream in the purification system can be monitored at several points by a stabilized zirconia oxygen cell. This cell is invaluable in detecting the development of leaks in the container vessel and the gas circulating system. This paper describes an electrical model and its applicution to the analysis of four reservoirs in Saudi Arabia. The model has 2,501 mesh points and represents 35,000 sq miles of the Arab-D member. Details of modeling such as mesh size, control problems and standards of performance in matching reservoir history are discussed. The particular performance match achieved for the Arab-D rnember is presented. Details such as permeability barriers, aquifer depletion and iwerference between oil fields are given. The performance match realized in the Abqaiq pool is presented in detail. INTRODUCTION The resistor-capacitor network and associated control equipment described in this paper comprise an electrical analog of a reservoir system. Similar equipment has been used to study the transient response of reservoirs for many years. The unique feature of the model and application to be described is the extremely large size of the model and reservoir system, and the detail observed in simulating the reservoir with the model. The Arabian American Oil Co. first became interested in analog computers for simulation of oil reservoirs in 1949. Since that time, several models have been developed, each more elaborate and refined so that the reservoir system might be more closely simulated. The current model is the latest in a series designed, built and operated by the Field Research Laboratory of Socony Mobil Oil Co. in collaboration with Aramco. It has been and continues to be used to study the regional performance of the Arab-D member limestone reservoir. The Arab-D member is one of the Middle East's most prolific producing horizons.. THE MODEL The theory of simulating a reservoir system with an electrical system has been presented in the literature.1-5 Therefore, this paper will not discuss the theoretical aspect of the problem except to point out the correspondence between the fluid system and electrical system, as shown in Table 1. In general, the complete model is made up of input devices, output devices, central control and a resistance-capacitance (RC) network. At times, the RC network alone is referred to as the "model". However, it should be evident from the text which meaning is attached to the word "model". A discussion of the equipment follows. THE RESISTANCE-CAPACITANCE NETWORK The RC network consists of 2,501 capacitance decades interconnected through 4,900 resistance decades. The components are arranged to form a rectangular network of 2,501 mesh points in a 41- X 61-mesh array. Imposing the mesh grid system on the continuous reservoir system divides the reservoir into discrete areal segments. These discrete segments may be of various sizes. More precisely, the mesh size need not be uniform throughout the model. The RC network is fabricated in two sections which are connected at the top. An inside view of the "tunnel" formed by the two sections is shown in Fig. 1. The height and width of the tunnel are shown in the figure. Numerals appear along the bottom and along the back opening of the tunnel. These numbers denote the x and y co-ordinate positions of mesh points. Fig. 2 presents a rear view of one-half the model. The length dimensions of the model, as well as a rear view of the capacitor decades, are shown in this figure. The control dials used in adjusting the resistance and capacitance values on the model can be seen in the enlarged portion of the model shown in Fig. 3. The electrical capacity at any mesh point can range from 0 to 1.0 microfarads set to the nearest tenth of a microfarad. The electric resistance connecting any two mesh points can range from 0 to 9,990,000 ohms set to the nearest 1,000 ohms. External capacitors may be added to any or all mesh points if the need arises. The values of electrical resistance and capacitance are adjusted manually by manipulating the two types of decade units. Nearly 2000 people are employed at Kennecott's Chino Mines Division, which recently completed its 50th year as a leading copper producer. Chino operates an open pit mine at Santa Rita, N.M., and a reduction plant, including mill, power plant, and smelter, at Hurley, N.M. The property mines 66,000 tons of copper ore and materials per day. There have been safety and industrial health programs at Chino for a number of years, but in 1955 these procedures were reorganized on a more active basis. Probably the earliest concentration of iron ore in this country was carried on in the northeastern magnetite areas. Magnetic concentration was relatively simple and gave a concentrate that, after agglomeration, and in spite of being high in phosphorus because of the dry concentrating methods then in use, was satisfactory blast-furnace feed. Production from the northeastern magnetite area languished after the discovery and development of the Lake Superior ores, where there was seemingly an unlimited tonnage of high-grade ore, first the Michigan ores, and subsequently the still larger deposits of Minnesota. For years only the higher grade, direct shipping ores of the Lake Superior district were mined. Those of Michigan, and of the Vermilion Range in Minnesota, were hard ores and came principally from underground mines. The softer ores of the Mesabi came partly from underground mines, but mostly from the enormous deposits that could be worked by open-pit methods. The costs of ore from these open-pit deposits, even with the high initial cost of stripping, were so low that the underground mines of the Mesabi could hardly compete. The so-called Old Range ores, of Michigan and of the Vermilion. Range of Minnesota, were hard and lumpy, and opened UP the burden in the blast furnace, therefore making possible harder driving with greater output. Also, some of these ores were of such grade and physical characteristics that they were suitable for charge ore in the open hearth. These ores, therefore, commanded a price premium, and could compete with the softer, finer, but cheaper, Mesabi ores. The big tonnage reserves, however, are on the Mesabi. and it is these big open-pit deposits that constitute our stock pile of iron ore, from which we are drawing so heavily during this war period. On the western end of the Mesabi the ore was found to be high in silica, and not suitable as furnace feed. As early as 1902, attempts were made to concentrate this so-called wash ore and by 1910 the first washing plant was put into operation. The Process was very simple, consisting essentially of a sizing and washing operation, with scalping screens, logwashers, and tables, which later were replaced by classifiers. Ore particles finer than 100 mesh were deliberately wasted, because these fines were undesirable in the furnace. Fortunately, these tailings were impounded, and already are being reworked. Before long some of the low-grade ores began to require more elaborate treatment than the simple washing operation and, tables having been discarded because of their low capacity, in favor of classifiers, jigs were next introduced. These were able to discard coarser pieces of tailing than classifiers. jigs are in active use today, various improvements having been made in their design and application. Various other machines and methods of concentration have been tried from time to time, and have in turn been discarded for more improved processes. THE milling of talc, as is the case of many non-metallic minerals, until recently, has not received adequate technical consideration, for the talc industry has become of importance only within the last decade. At first, talc was used only in the massive form, for foot warmers, griddles, and so on, and milling methods were unnecessary. As the demand for ground talc increased, producers adopted the machinery used in the milling of flour; in fact, many talc mills were rebuilt flour mills. Improvement has been slow, but today several types of grinding and separating machinery are in use; many of them, however, are still inadequate and inefficient. To determine the best methods of milling talc, it is necessary to understand the essential properties a talc must possess to fit it for a particular use. For toilet purposes, whiteness, freedom from lime and grit, fineness of grain, and good "slip" are essential. As a paper filler or coating, the talc must be white, have a good slip, be free from grit and iron, uniform, and fine grained; freedom from lime is a disputed point. Fibrous talc is supposed to be superior to massive on account of the interlocking of grains in the paper, thus increasing its strength; this point, though, is in doubt. In general, talc for the paper industry need not be of as high quality or as fine grained as that used for toilet purposes. Talc is usually bought by sample, for which reason it is difficult to state the essential properties for use in paint, rubber, roofing, and so on. The adoption of standard screen tests and standard grades by producers is necessary before an accurate basis for manufacturing or selling standards can be established. Off-color tales might be utilized, as in Germany and-Austria, by the establishment of standard grades of colored tales.

At this Symposium on Gold which is sponsored by The Metallurgical Society of AIME and the International Precious Metals Institute many distinguished authors will present the latest developments in the metallurgy of gold and in operating practices at mines and in refineries. It seems appropriate then, as the introduction to this volume to recall some of the history of gold and the metallurgical developments which have been accomplished, especially during the past 100 years and some of the people who have contributed so much to the metallurgy of gold. Of all the elements gold has been the most sought after since the earliest times. Perhaps the quotation from Virgil's Aeneid best describes man's desire for gold but Pliny the Elder also put it very well when he wrote in 79 A.D. that "Gold is the first of man's follies, silver the second". This quest for gold has markedly influenced man's history and through the efforts of the early philosophers and alchemists to turn base metals into gold the foundations for modern chemistry were laid. The pages of history literally teem with references to gold. Gold is the first metal mentioned in the Bible and was the source of Croesus wealth as well as the death of King Midas whose touch turned everything into gold. And of course almost everyone has heard of Jason's Argonauts and the golden fleece. They are the subject of one of the many drawings in Agricola's De Re Metallica published in 1556. The Argonauts were probably prospectors seeking the source of the placers in the region near-the Black Sea. The time was about 1200 B.C. and the placer miners recovered gold by trapping the particles in sheep's fleeces placed in sluices. After drying, the fleeces were shaken to recover the gold. Gold is not hydrophilic, or wetted by water and thus the oils in the wool aided in collecting the particles. Here we have perhaps the earliest reference to surface chemistry and the basis for concentration of gold by flotation.
