EVER since the introduction of the Siemens regenerative furnace, it has been recognized that a certain amount of gas is lost each time the furnace-action is reversed. This loss comes, first, from the gas which passes through the free connection between the stack and the gas-main, which exists during the time the reversing-valve is turning over; and, secondly, from the gas which is in the chamber and flues, from the hearth to the reversing-valve, and which flows back into the stack when the valve is reversed. The amount lost each time is, of course, small; but, since a furnace is reversed from four to six times every hour for, say, 300 days in the year, the aggregate is large enough to be well worth attention. The estimate has been published' that, in Germany alone, the loss from the first of the above causes amounts to 500,000 marks per year. The loss from the second cause is, of course, much greater. A process for saving this entire loss, in use at Teplitz, Bohemia, for about three years, would seem to be of value even in this country, where coal is cheaper and where the small economies are not watched as closely as they are in Europe. This process, invented by Mr. Adelbert Kurzwernhart, late Technical Director of the Teplitzer Walzwerk, has been worked out with thoroughness. The loss from each cause can be calculated very closely for any particular furnace, and the results to be expected from the process ascertained. It can easily be decided, therefore, whether it is worthwhile to adopt it under any given conditions. LITTLE new oil was found in West Virginia, during 1923, but there were important discoveries of gas. Most of the large oil producers have contented themselves with pumping old wells or in drilling only enough new wells in defined territory to maintain a fairly constant production, the attitude being that no, profit is made in producing high-grade oil at a low price and that an eventual loss is sustained by draining the reserves of a limited commodity that, at some more favorable time, will be of much value. The representative of one large company said: "We have done nothing but pump old wells during 1923 and we have made no plans for 1924." Careful attention to producing wells has been the rule, there having been few abandonments; the belief is prevalent that small wells will eventually become profitable under more favorable marketing conditions. In natural gas, the opposite point of view prevails. Because of the vast capabilities of the state for producing gas, its output being ahead of all others, great systems of transportation and distribution into the markets of four adjoining states have been built and a demand has been created that no present, or apparently potential, production can satisfy. This demand has become so great that large distributing companies not only discourage new applications for service but advise old customers to install coal furnaces for auxiliary fuel; some have requested public-service commissions to grant higher 'rates against large industrial consumers than those allowed for domestic heating. The response to this known market has been a rapid increase in price, both at the well mouth and at the door of the ultimate consumer, and the industry has become so stable that the only uncertainty, or hazard, appears to be the question of the presence of gas in fair quantity in a given territory under consideration. Several oil companies have now forsaken their policy of selling gas, wells outright when drilled and ;have organized gas departments to drill for gas and to dispose of the daily output by meter to distributing corporations. With such companies and with other producers whose interest is chiefly gas, the year has been busy and profitable. Some new territory of apparently large value has been proved and deeper producing sands in old fields have been tapped.

INTRODUCTION The idea of water management and control at the Church Rock Mill operations began to take shape in February 1979. At that time, we were already investigating the feasibility of decreasing the fresh water requirements so that the solids would become the limiting factor in tailings impoundment utilization. The area for solution evaporation could be kept at a fraction of the normal requirements under the standard process of full water usage. The Church Rock Mill is an acid leach circuit followed by solids/liquid separation with thickeners in counter current decantation, and solvent extraction. Following the normal design of acid leach circuits, reuse of tailings solution was not incorporated in the original mill process design. INITIAL WATER CONTROL INVESTIGATIONS The investigations to decrease the fresh water requirements centered around modifying the grinding circuit from the present semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones, to open circuit grinding with a rod mill. The open circuit grinding with the SAG mill and rod mill in series had the potential of decreasing the water requirements for grinding and leach dilution by approximately 50% or 1.4 m3/min (300 gpm). The grinding pulp density would be maintained at 70 to 72% solids, and the leach dilution to 50% solids would be accomplished with acid tailings liquor recycle. In such a grinding circuit arrangement, the SAG mill would provide the primary or coarse grind, and the rod mill would be used for the fine grind. By the SAG mill and rod mill series grinding method of water control and other secondary water controls in various places downstream from the grinding circuit, the required necessary evaporation area was estimated at 120 acres of liquid surface. A second method of water control at grinding was investigated. A two-stage cyclone classification circuit appeared to have a good potential of achieving the same water reduction at a much lower capital and operating cost. However, in retrospect, this would not have been a viable method since a high slime recycle load would have been established hindering classification. The use of reagents to neutralize the acid tailings solution was not considered seriously at that time, since it would have materially increased operating costs, although it would have also allowed more tailings solution recycle and consequently, less fresh water usage. However, with the tailings solution deposition area available at that time, it was not then necessary to incur the high cost of neutralization. The control expected by the series grinding of semiautogenous and rod mills would have been sufficient to maintain a water consumption/evaporation equilibrium well in line with the available land area. IMPLEMENTATION OF NEUTRALIZATION OPERATIONS During the summer of 1979, the UNC Church Rock Mill experienced a tailings dam breach which resulted in a prolonged mill shutdown. Upon resumption of operations at the end of October 1979, tailings deposition was restricted to a small portion of the tailings impoundment area. Figure 1 shows the general tailings area and the limits of the present deposition area in the central part including the borrow pits. These borrow pits had been excavated to provide materials for tailings dam construction. Immediately after resumption of operations, it became evident that it would be necessary to control the quantity of liquid to be evaporated because of the small confined area available for tailings solution deposition and to maximize the deposition time in the tailings area. The water control required had to be exercised on a large scale, and to be in operation as quickly as possible. An obvious solution was to reuse the tailings liquor in mill process. Immediate steps were taken to install the necessary equipment for tailings neutralization on an interim basis. Anhydrous ammonia was selected as the primary neutralization reagent since it was the quickest system that could be placed in operation. Previous laboratory tests indicated fair results with ammonia neutralization. Such a system required a minimum of installed equipment and handling. INITIAL NEUTRALIZATION OPERATIONS Actual neutralization operations began on November 26, 1979. The raffinate solution which normally would have been discarded was pumped to a 3.7 m (12ft) diam by 4.3 m (14ft) tank for reagent contact, see Figure 2. At this tank, anhydrous ammonia was added directly from the tanker trailers and controlled at pH 7.0 nominally. Agitation was provided by air sparging. The neutralized product formed a highly viscous slurry in the grinding circuit which resulted in pumping and cyclone classification problems.

THE Midvale plant of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company consists of a flotation mill for concentrating sulphide ores of lead and zinc by differential flotation to produce three separate concentrates, one of lead, one of zinc, and one of iron pyrite; and a lead smelter for smelting ores and concentrates to produce base lead bullion, The plant, including its shops, laboratories, office, railroad yards which serve both mill and smelter, and areas reserved for tailing ponds and slag dumps, covers 646 acres on the right bank of the Jordan River at Midvale, Utah. It is twelve miles south of Salt Lake City and sixteen miles east of the West Mountain mining district at Bingham Canyon from which is drawn a large part of its ore supply. Custom ores are treated as well as the product of Company mines.

THE interesting paper recently submitted by Messrs. Tobelmann and Potter' shows that chemical problems have developed which are of great interest in this new and important branch of metallurgy. Those who realize what a process of this kind really involves will agree that it deserves a better name than "leaching process." The word leaching conveys the idea that the copper is simply leached out of the ore with acid and then precipitated on iron; the chemistry of such a process would be of little interest. As, however, during the first year's operation of this plant 24,400,532 lb. (11,067,837 kg.) or about two-thirds of the produce, was electrolytic copper, while 7,992,033 lb., or about one-third, was cement copper, it would seem more appropriate to term the process electrochemical. It further appears, from the particulars given, that efforts have been made to have the entire production in the form of electrolytic copper. -This could be done if the chemistry of the problem were kept in balance, so that it would not be necessary to discard any solutions that carried copper and acid of commercial value. A process, such as that under consideration, in which the copper is precipitated from solution by electrolysis, the solvent being at the same time regenerated, is one that requires special chemical and electrochemical knowledge and experience if all the -copper in solution that has been extracted from the ore is to be successfully and economically produced as electrolytic copper. The object of this paper is to discuss, from the practical and theoretical standpoints, the chemical and electrochemical problems involved in the working of a process of this kind, and' which must be solved to keep it in chemical and electrochemical equilibrium. The electric arc welding of cast iron has been studied by Braune Lamberton, Schimpke, Kenyon, Gale Manufacturing Co., Wedemeyer Candy, Neese, Miller, Carter, American Welding Society, Namack Lebrun, Achenbach, Jansson, Xochendorffer and others.' The write of this paper has been able to obtain a series of cast irons, from gray tc white, without using cast-iron electrodes but by coating on wrought-iron bars mixtures of carborundum (Sic) and graphite (C). In this work, he found the curious phenomenon of barium carbonate.

THIS investigation is a part of the United States Bureau of Mines work in conserving the Nation's resources. The isothermal sections presented were developed as a guide to a comprehensive investigation of the properties and fabricating characteristics of copper-base alloys containing manganese and tin. These alloys are being investigated as possible replacements for the commercial bronzes containing substantial quantities of tin. Development of the isothermal sections has, therefore, been limited to the area between 0 to 20 pct Mn and 0 to 25 pct Sn. Since Heusler1 reported the ferromagnetic properties of the Cu-Mn-Sn alloys in 1903, the system has been the subject of several investigations. These studies were largely concerned with correlation of magnetic properties and crystal structure.2-6 Vero,' however, established the solidus surface of the system, between 20 pct Mn and 40 pct Sn, by thermal and microscopic methods. The a, ß, and y solid solutions were also observed by Vero and reported to extend into the interior of the ternary system. For the present study, the annotated diagram of the Cu-Sn system prepared by Raynor' and the Cu-Mn diagram by Dean and coworkers9 were used as the binary borders of the ternary system. Procedure The metals used in this investigation were electrolytic manganese, washed cathode copper, and three-star tin. The manganese, produced at the Boulder City pilot plant of the Bureau of Mines, had a purity of 99.9 pct; the copper contained less than 0.004 pct Bi and 0.001 pct S; the tin contained 0.070 pct Pb, 0.070 pct Sb, 0.050 pct Fe, and 0.065 pct Si. Heats of 1 lb were melted in alundum crucibles with a 3-kw induction furnace. The heats were chill-cast in iron or copper molds to form 6-in. ingots 3/4 in. in diameter. Molds were washed with graphite or zirconia, depending on the manganese content, and preheated to 150°C. The maximum impurity content of any alloy was 0.03 pct Fe, 0.02 pct Si, and 0.02 pct Al; in most cases, they contained less than half this quantity of any of these impurities. Composition of the alloys and their treatment prior to homogenizing are shown in Fig. 1. Designations adjacent to each composition refer to the heat numbers. With a few exceptions, ingots containing 20 pct Sn or less were hot-swaged. These ingots were swaged, after a 24-hr preheat at 650°C, to obtain a total reduction of 70 pct in cross section. Intermittent reheating was necessary, and reductions were limited to either 0.025 or 0.050 in. in diameter per pass. Selection of a 200-hr homogenizing treatment was based on extensive experiments which indicated that virtual equilibrium was reached after 150 hr. Structures were retained by quenching in water. Grain sizes in the specimens homogenized at 350" and 450°C were generally small. These homogenizing treatments were preceded by a 50-hr anneal at 650°C to facilitate phase identification by increasing the grain size in these specimens. The specimens were furnace-cooled from this temperature to the homogenizing temperature, and the heat treatment was continued for the standard 200-hr period. The homogenized samples were bisected to provide an internal section for metallographic examination. Optimum definition of the microstructure was obtained by successive polishing and etching. Quarter-strength ASTM copper reagent No. 13 gave the most satisfactory results.10 Filings from interior sections of the samples were used for diffraction studies. These filings were annealed in evacuated glass tubes at homogenizing temperatures for periods exceeding 50 hr and quenched in water. During this treatment the manganese content was reduced by significant amounts, probably by vaporization. This change in composition was considered in applying the diffraction data, which were used only as a means of identifying phases where the data were consistent with the metallographic evidence. Phase Identification The a solid solution is readily distinguished by the copper-colored, twinned, polyhedral grains, as shown in Fig. 2, and a face-centered cubic X-ray pattern. Tukon indentations, using a 25-g load, indicate a Knoop hardness of 155 for a quenched from 650°C. Using white light developed by a Wratten 78 A filter, the ß grains in etched specimens have a dark brown tint in contrast to the lighter copper-colored grains of the a phase. Knoop hardness values of 284 were obtained for the ß structure in specimens quenched from 650°C. The ß structure was also distinguished from the a phase by its body-centered cubic lattice. The work described was carried out during 1917 and 1918 at the testing laboratory of Watertown Arsenal at the instigation of the Nitrate Division and later with the concurrence of the Cannon Section of the Ordnance Department, U. 8. A. The experiments follow three principal lines of work: First, the effect of nitrogen under pressure on steel containers of various compositions at a red heat; second, the effect of decomposing ammonia on various alloy steels, iron, and non-ferrous alloys; third, a new theory of the erosion of guns in respect to the effect of nitrogen in steel. Part I In the Haber process for the manufacture of ammonia from its elcnlents, it is necessary to have nitrogen and hydrogen of 1500 lb. per sq. in. (105.5 kg. per sq. cm.) at a temperature of 500 to 600' C. The steel containers for these gases gave trouble by failing without apparent cause. When the General Chemical Co. began to develop its method for the production of ammonia, it experienced the same difficulty and, knowing that the Haber process had solved the difficulty by the use of alloy steels, it made several small steel bottles of different compositions and kept them filled with these gases at this pressure and temperature until they failed. The time of service varied from a few days, for the plain steel casting, to two years for a chrome-vanadium forging. Four of these steel bottles were sent to this laboratory for investigation; they were a plain carbon-steel forging, a nickel-stee1 forging, a chrome-vanadium steel forging, and a chrome-steel forging. The time of service was as follows: plain carbon steel, 4 mo.; nickel steel, 6 mo.; chrome-vanadium steel, over 2 yr.; chrome steel, 4 mo. When these containers were cut open and the cross-section surface polished, they showed an inside zone with a different luster from the rest of the metal. Upon etching, this zone was almost unaffected while the rest of the steel etched normally.

[ ] Utilizing tendencies for low grade ores in the Sudbury District of Ontario to cave after higher grade ore has been mined, International Nickel Co., of Canada, Ltd., is recovering millions of tons of nickel-copper ore once regarded as submarginal. Inco is working lower grade ore than ever mined before from its underground operations because of the caving method and metallurgical practices. In the caving method, blocks containing as much as 1.5 million tons of ore are undercut. As ore from the undercut block is withdrawn, the block to be mined breaks away and starts to disintegrate as it moves downward. Inco is also using the blasthole method, using explosives to break slices of harder, tougher ore from solid material. Inco has built a new concentrator at one of its most recent shafts for handling the increased tonnages of low grade ore. The concentrator presently has a 10,000-ton per day capacity, and is scheduled to be increased to 12,000 tons. Hoisting from the mine is by push-button control and the ore is milled on the spot. A 7 ½ -mile pipeline carries bulk concentrate to reduction plants at Copper Cliff. Giant crushers, weighing 165 tons each, have been installed underground. Twenty-ton electric locomotives haul ore to the crushers. The expansion program is expected to lift total annual production of nickel in the free world to 375 million pounds annually, an increase of 150 million pounds. Inco is presently mining more than 1 million tons of ore per month from combined surface and underground operations.

THE theory of gravitation is based on Newton's law that any two bodies exert a mutual attraction which is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them; i. e., A =KRM/R2 (1) where K is a constant, M and m are the respective masses of the two bodies, and R the distance between them. In the earth's gravitational system, the earth is one of the bodies; the other may be any body within or without the earth. In theoretical dis¬cussions and calculations in regard to gravity, that other body usually is taken as a unit of mass: in the C. G. S. system, a body of one gram in mass. GRAVITY AND LEVEL SURFACES Gravity is defined in geophysics as the force of attraction exerted by the earth, towards itself, on a body of unit mass. The intensity of gravity is usually expressed in dynes of force or in centimeters of acceleration. In geophysical work in America, most commonly it is expressed in dynes (per gram) with the "per gram" understood and not directly expressed. In geophysical work in Europe, most commonly it is expressed in centimeters per second per second (cm./sec.2) and less commonly merely as centimeter-gram-second units (C. G. S.). At sea level, the intensity of gravity amounts very nearly to 980 dynes. The vertical is the direction along which the attraction of gravity is exerted at any point. . In most cases, it is very nearly, but not quite, per¬pendicular to the earth's surface. The path that would be taken by a body falling freely through space toward the earth is vertical at each point and may be spoken of also as "the vertical," or as the line of the vertical, or as a line of force of gravity. At the earth's surface it com¬monly is very nearly, but not quite, a straight line.

THE institute has established this lectureship to honor the memory of a great American metallurgist, one whose fame has continued long after his passing. As one scientist recently stated it," All metallurgical texts gradually become outdated and outmoded, except those of the great Henry Marion Howe." It seems fitting, then, that, once every year, we should review, in his honor, some aspects of the science in which he was such a distinguished leader, and also discuss any new data that may help to clarify our concepts. It is my privilege, for which indeed I express the deepest appreciation to this Institute, to offer for consideration a few thoughts on the toughness and fracture of hardened steels. Before proceeding to the data, I wish to express my great indebtedness to many associates whose stimulating discussions, generous contributions of data and cooperation in experiments are gratefully acknowledged. (But I wish to absolve them of any blame that may arise from the way in which their discussions and data have been used!) First, Dr. Edgar C. Bain, Vice President, Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation, whose amiable but merciless criticisms and always constructive and thoughtful suggestions help unfailingly to guard against pitfalls. THE purpose of these conferences has been to find some basic principles to guide us in the chaos which confronts us, to arrive at elements of a national policy. None such exists, nor, as a matter of fact, have there been any concerted efforts by the public or the mineral industry to evolve one. In the absence of such a policy the administrative agencies of the government can hardly be expected to be consistent or really effective in their handling of mineral problems, domestic or foreign. Basic Facts MINERAL reserves are unequally distributed among the nations. The principal world supplies are grouped around the north Atlantic, and nearly three-fourths of the world's total is controlled politically and commercially by English-speaking people. No one nation has a complete supply of the minerals necessary for modern industry; specialization, reciprocity, and large-scale movements between the nations are inherent in nature's unequal distribution of them. The principal sources of supply are relatively few compared with the nations to be served-a fact which determines broadly certain natural outlines of the world flow. National isolation with regard to minerals can be accomplished only through backward steps in industry and lower standards of living even in the nations possessing the most of the mineral supplies. A certain measure of unified commercial control, international in scope, is a natural consequence of the limited number of the large sources of supply. Mineral supplies for the world as a whole are so large that there is little need for concern about early exhaustion, but every nation has important problems of early exhaustion of particular minerals, which must affect their policies.

The regular, bottom-blown Bessemer converter of the present day is a modification of previous forms, and most of the latest proposed modifications of it are merely returns to former types which Ressemer discarded. That he tried almost every conceivable method of blowing iron, with tuyeres at almost every possible position or angle, is well known; and it is to be supposed that he was familiar with the advantages of each type, since he finally settled on that form which has not been improved upon hitherto, for the purposes for which converters will generally be used. Modifications have been tried along two lines: In the arrangement of tuyeres, and in the manner of carrying out the process with tuyeres still blowing vertically upward through the bath. While they have all failed in general competition with the regular modern type of vessel, some of them have found special fields in which they have held their own. The most notable example is in the steel-casting industry, and especially in that part of it concerned with the manufacture of castings which require very hot or very fluid metal, or supply a demand of constantly varying physical or chemical requirements. In this industry the small converters occupy a field between that of the crucible-process and that of the open-hearth process, arid have won a place for themselves in France, England, America, Russia and other countries, which they bid fair to retain until either a new method is discovered of producing cheaply very hot, fluid steel, or the open-hearth process is so improved that very hot steel may be made with it at lower cost of repairs to lining arid roof.

Faulty rock dusting of the New Orient Mine at West Frankfort, Ill. was declared to have been the primary cause of the extent of the blast that killed 119 men on December 21. Walter Eadie, state director of mines and minerals, ascribed the explosion to the ignition of methane in a working place about a mile northwest of the shaft of the mine. The initiation of the combustion was either by a spark from electrical machinery or from men smoking in the mine. It was surmised that a train of empty cars stalled in a ventilation door, had caused sufficient disturbance in the ventilation system to permit accumulation of gases. The Federal Bureau of Mines said that the Illinois explosion was caused by an electrical spark that touched off the clouds of gas present because of the faulty ventilation equipment. The bureau report listed three conditions as primarily responsible: An inadequate ventilating system, operation of faulty electrical equipment and the presence of large accumulations of fine coal dust capable of exploding. "This coal dust, principally along roadways, was not removed from the mine or rendered inert by the application of sufficient rock dust," the report stated. Investigations showed that an even more disastrous blast was averted because the explosion eventually reached areas where it could expand into open workings and where enough rock dust had been applied to retard it.

A large-scale water-injection program for the Holt Bryant reservoir of the Delhi field has been established by means of the new automatic multi-pool analyzer. The objectives of this program were to increase reservoir pressure and eliminate a cross-dip gradient of 200 psi. Pressure increases during the first 15 months of operation have allowed for increased oil production rates of 2,600 BID or 25 per cent. To determine the required water injection it was necessary to predict natural water influx ram. Elimination of the pressure gradients required the water-injection program to account for the fluid migration and pressure interaction between segments of the reservoir. An integral part of the ana1ysis included the determination of in-place volumes of oil and gas. The operation of the automatic multi-pool analyzer in determining the water-injection program is described. New features of the analyzer inc1ude an automatic maferial balance analog and a leart-squares computer for determination of unknown reservoir properties. Operational procedures are sufficiently simple to allow direct use by reservoir engineers on a routine basis. The rapidity and accuracy with which problems may be solved permit repeated ana1yses as a check upon reservoir performance. INTRODUCTION This paper describes the use of a new analog com- puter in determining the optimum injection program for a complex reservoir. The Holt-Bryant (Fig. 1) is the major reservoir in the Delhi field of Louisiana. Production is from the Tuscaloosa at subsea depths of 2,970 to 3,286 ft. The sand dips to the south and southwest from three to five degrees. The reservoir is approximately 12 miles long and varies in width from 1/2 to 2 miles. Various calculations have placed the initial volume of oil in-place in the wide range of 275 to 355 million STB. Two small gas caps were initially present in the reservoir. The Holt-Bryant reservoir was discovered in Dec.. 1944, and was fully developed with 188 producing wells by 1948. THE constancy of calibration, and to a great extent the life, of a thermoelement is dependent on the suitability of the primary protecting tube in which the wires are mounted, particularly when used at high temperatures. An ideal thermocouple protecting tube would be com-posed of materials that would not contaminate the thermoelement wires contained in it-one that would remain absolutely gas-tight ,it all temperatures of usage, that will not be attacked by gases, or other surrounding agencies, that is not destroyed by heat, that withstands sudden and extreme temperature changes, that affords a high degree of mechanical protection and does not deform at high temperatures, that is a good heat conductor and obtainable in small diameters so as to keep down lag factors. It has not yet been possible to produce tubes of any known mate-rials that will meet all of these conditions. In selecting protecting tubes, therefore, one should be chosen the characteristics of which best fit it to the particular conditions of usage. Frequently conditions are such that two tubes have to be used, a primary gas-tight protecting tube inside of a secondary protecting tube, because certain agencies will attack the primary gas-tight tube unless it is guarded by the outside tube.

FOR the third consecutive year, I have collected the data on enrolment and employment of graduates from the schools in. the United States and Canada that grant degrees in mineral technology. The data were collected in the same way as formerly; namely, by questionnaire, dated Jan. 5, 1935, and are therefore comparable with the figures reported for former years. This year, along with the names of the 48 schools in the United States and the six in Canada, are listed the courses offered and the degrees granted by each, school, together with the names of the professors in charge. The names and addresses of the four schools in Mexico are also given. The list is on pages 450-1, which should he valued as a directory by those interested in mineral technology education. So far as is known, this is the most complete and up-to-date list that has ever been published.

THOUGH the dust-control systems in the crushing plants and other buildings at Morenci do not differ materially from similar installations in other large copper reduction works, it is probable that in few other plants has as much attention been paid to the dust problem. Possibly the most striking feature of the Morenci installation is the manner in which the necessary equipment has been built into the various structures, and the absence of unsightly pipes, ducts, and fan houses. That this result has been attained is due, in no small part, to the basic conception that the control of the dust in a milling plant should be an essential part of the process itself and not something to be tacked on later after the plant is in operation. The control systems were designed and developed along with the general plant construction program and when the first car of ore was dumped into the crusher the dust-control equipment was ready.
