EXPERIENCE has shown that certain known natural conditions and other indefinite characteristics combine to make a mining area vulnerable to mountain bumps. Some of the known conditions are heavy overburden, an overlying stratum of strong non-elastic rock, a structurally strong coal seam that does not crush easily and yet is the weakest stratum in the series, and a floor stratum of more than ordinary firmness. The indefinite characteristics could include resistance of top or bottom of a coal seam to lateral flow, effect of immediate top and bottom strata, nature of the coal seam, and other factors about which very little is known. It is in this area that exhaustive study is needed to achieve positive control of the dreaded mountain bump hazard. In the Gary district, West Virginia, two of the five operating mines have areas known to be vulnerable to mountain bumps.These are the No. 2 and 6 mines, which are working the Pocahontas No. 4 coal seam. In this area the seam is overlain at a zero to 10-ft interval by the massive Eckman sandstone, which is about 100 ft thick in the vulnerable areas. Total overburden, consisting of shale, coal seams, and sandstones, ranges from 700 to 1400 ft where bumps have occurred (Fig. 1). The coal seam is 4 to 8 ft thick and has a weak columnar structure of very soft and spongy or woody coal. The immediate top is either the Eckman sandstone or hard shale, both of which provide generally good roof conditions for mining operations. The bottom ranges from medium to hard gray shale. The incidence of bumps in the Gary district dates from about 1930 and can be correlated to some degree with the increased rate of extraction attained with mechanical mining. During early years of operation at the No. 2 and 6 mines, most of the work was development and under comparatively light cover. As overburden became heavier, together with an increasing percentage of coal coming from pillar extraction, mountain bumps began to occur. Before 1945 they were much less severe than in later years, and because there were no injuries or fatalities, no records were kept. But by 1951 the incidence of bumps had increased to such extent that it became evident a mining system would have to be designed to eliminate or at least minimize these occurrences. Drawing on experience with modified versions of old systems and certain characteristics peculiar to the Pocahontas No. 4 coal seam, the district mining engineer, Martin Hayduk, outlined the essential factors for bump control in the Gary district. These control factors indicated: 1) The highly stressed area, which lies within the limits of convergence effects, moves at approximately the same rate as the retreating pillar line. 2) There is a decided softening of the periphery of blocks which is greatest and deepest on the gob side. 3) Blocks less than 45 ft wide never have been known to bump in the Pocahontas seams. Fig. 2 shows the mining plan based on these observations—a thin-pillar system with a minimum of secondary development. It was recognized from the start that the Hayduk system had certain limitations. When pillar work backed up to an inevitable surrounded block it was no longer applicable; also, burnt bottom and/or unknown factors reduced the system's effectiveness in certain headings. Since there was no way to eliminate the loaded block, it was decided to experiment with auger drilling to attain controlled release of this stored-up energy. THE failure, by swelling, of several cast aluminum-zinc, spiral, pump rods, used to circulate water in a constant-temperature bath, brought up the question as to whether the presence of tin in varying quantities would have any appreciable influence in controlling this action. Previous workers had found the same difficulty with aluminum-zinc alloys, due to their swelling in water or solutions of electrolyte^.^ It was known that pure aluminum was practically insoluble in concentrated sulfuric and nitric acids, presumably due to the formation of an oxidized film on the surface. Concentrated sulfuric acid had little or no effect on pure zinc and tin and concentrated hydrochloric acid would attack all three metals. These facts aroused curiosity as to the probable reaction of the ternary alloys of these metals, and tests were made to determine their resistivity to the action of common laboratory reagents. Samples, covering the entire range of the ternary series of aluminum, zinc and tin alloys, were made up from good grades of the commercial metals.2 The materials were melted, at as low temperatures as possible, in graphite crucibles in a gas-fired crucible furnace. Graphite crucibles were used in preference to clay, to prevent the absorption of silicon by the aluminum, as found by previous workers. The melted materials were stirred thoroughly with pine sticks in order to ensure complete mixing and the greatest possible freedom from oxidation, and were cast in sectional, iron molds giving bars % in. in diameter and 5 in. long.

To Install Waste Heat Boiler at White Pine White Pine Copper Co.'s smelter 18 miles southwest of Ontonagon, Mich., will have a six story high boiler utilizing what otherwise would be waste heat from a copper reverberatory furnace. Designed and under construction by the Babcock & Wilcox Co., the boiler will supply steam to a turbo-generator furnishing power for the projected development. The boiler will be in line with and following the reverberatory furnace. Using waste heat from the furnace in place of fuel for steam generation, about 50 pct of heat in the fuel originally supplied to the furnace will be recovered by the waste heat boiler. Exploration conducted over the past 15 years at White Pine, wholly owned subsidiary of Copper Range Co., has disclosed reserves of 309 million tons averaging 21.3 lb of copper per ton. Ore mineral is chiefly chalcocite (Cu2s).

Smyth, presided at the dinner, at the close of which he introduced, as the speaker of the evening, John M. Longyear, who gave a most interesting talk about his work in exploring for coal on the islands of Spitzbergen, 400 miles north of the North Cape of Norway. (Wilkes-Barre Meeting, June, 1911.) I. LOCATION AND EXTENT. THE Caddo oil-field, shown in Fig. 1, is located in Caddo parish, northwestern Louisiana. The known producing territory of oil is covered by townships 19 N, 20 N, 21 N, 22 N, and ranges 15 and 16 W., shown in Fig. 2. The center of the field may be taken as Oil City, 24 miles north of Shreveport, on the Kansas City Southern railway. Shreveport is the second largest city in the State, and is the connecting point of five rail-road-lines. Drilling at the present time, however, is going on all over northern Louisiana, especially in Caddo and the neighboring parishes. II. HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT. Natural gas escaping at the surface is found at numerous places in northwestern Louisiana. At Shreveport, the plant of the Shreveport Ice & Refrigerating Co. has been lighted by natural gas for 20 years. The well was drilled for water, but was abandoned on account of the gas. A test well, put down in 1905 near the western limits of Shreveport, was driven to 1,650 ft., and encountered indications of gas and oil at various depths, but did not succeed in finding enough to be profitable. Attention was first attracted to the Caddo field in 1895 by indications in water-wells from 40 to 60 ft. deep, in which the pressure of natural gas was noticeable. This indication of gas in a shallow well led to the drilling of the first well in the Caddo field, the old Savage Brothers & Morricell, or the Caddo Lake Oil and Pipe Line No. 1. The rig for this well was erected in May, 1904, and drilling began in June, 1904. The well was bailed Mar. 23, 1905, with a small amount of oil. It was deepened July, 1905, and converted into a "gasser " Jan. 3, 1906. It was abandoned January, 1907. In consequence of the finding of oil in the Savage well, drilling-operations were pushed with energy; and in April, 1905, four wells were drilling. Great trouble was experienced with

Solid-state electrochemical measurements by three alternative experimental procedures were made with the cell FeO, Fe3O4 |Zro.85Cao.15O1.85 |Cu| Zr0.85CaO.15O1.85 | FeO, Fe304 to establish the solubility and diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper in the temperature range 800" to 1030°C. The solubility of oxygen in solid copper and the diflusivity of oxygen in solid copper Dgu = 1.7 X 10-2 exp(-16,000/RT) Cm2/sec were determined and confirmed in alternative experiments. The enthalpy of solution of oxygen in solid copper equals —10,000 cal per mole; the partial excess entropy of the oxygen atoms in the Cu-O dilute solution is approximately the same as that found for interstitial atoms in other metals. The diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper is consistent with that expected for an interstitial atom. RELIABLE values for the saturation solubility N(s) and diffusivity DO of oxygen in solid copper have not been unambiguously established in the literature. Following three early determinations by others,1"3 Rhines and Mathewson4 reported that the solubility of oxygen in solid copper increased from 0.007 at. pct 0 at 600°C to about 0.015 pct at 1050°C. Phillips and skinner,, using essentiially the same analytical procedure, reported that the solid solubility increases from 0.0018 at. pct 0 at 550°C to about 0.0075 pct at 1050OC. The only previous value for the diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper was reported by Ransley.6 Ransley deoxidized Cu-Cu2O alloys in an atmosphere of carbon monoxide gas to yield a solubility-diffusivity product. He used the solubility data of Rhines and Mathewson to calculate the diffusivity values. Another method for obtaining the solubility-diffusivity product (N(s) DO) is by measuring the widths of internal-oxidation zones in copper alloys as reported by Verfurth and Rapp.7 However, the calculated N(S)Do products depend upon the alloy content of the specimen, so that the internal oxidation of copper alloys does not follow ideal internal oxidation kinetics. As a result, unequivocal values for the N(s) DO product were not obtained by this procedure. A solid-state coulometric titration technique similar to that employed in this work was introduced by C. Wagner8 to study the dependence on silver activity of the Ag/S ratio in silver sulfide in the temperature range of 160" to 300°C. Similar experiments have been carried out by C. Wagner and co-workers9-11 to study the stoichiometry range of silver and copper tellurides, cuprous sulfide, and cuprous selenide. Numerous authors have carried out electrochemical measurements with a solid oxygen-ion-conducting electrolyte to determine the solubility and/or diffusivity of dissolved oxygen in several liquid metals.12-l6 Rickert and Steiner17,18 have used solid-state electrochemical measurements to determine the diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver from 760" to 900°C. Two different cell geometries were used. In the cell of linear geometry Fe, FeO | ZrO2 + (CaO) | Ag + [0 (dissolved)] [1] oxygen diffused from the interior of the silver electrode to the silver/electrolyte interface where the oxygen activity had been lowered from a fixed initial value to practically zero by the application of voltage to the cell. The diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver was determined from the solution of the diffusion equation and the time dependence of the cell current. However, this determination of the diffusion coefficient depended upon a knowledge of the solubility of oxygen in solid silver. A cylindrical geometry was used for the cell Pt, O2(Po2 = 0.21 atm) | ZrO2 + (CaO) | Ag + [0 (dissolved)] [II] which also allowed the diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver to be determined. These values were in agreement with other available data.l9 Recently, Raleigh20,21 used a method involving the measurement of diffusion-limited currents in a cell involving the AgBr solid electrolyte to determine the diffusion coefficient of silver in Ag-Au alloys at 400°C. Diffusivity values on the order of l0-14 sq cm per sec were measured in the alloy composition range 10 to 60 at. pct Ag in a single experiment. From numerous electrical conductivity and galvanic cell measurements,9'22"26 the solid solution Zr0.85 Ca0.15 O1.85 has been established as an electrolyte with predominant oxygen ion conduction over a wide range of intermediate and high oxygen activities. For interrelating the thermodynamics and the kinetics of the dissolution of oxygen in solid copper in this investigation, a galvanic cell was constructed with FeO-Fe3O4 as the reversible reference electrode, the Zr0.85Ca0.15 O1.85 electrolyte, and a pure copper specimen under-saturated in oxygen as the other electrode. Prof. J. C. BRanner, Stanford University, Cal. (communication to the Secretary): On p. 398, Mr. Hedburg mentions Marionite and Brannerite as ores of zinc. Neither of these has been authoritatively recognized as a distinct mineral species. Marionite, originally described by Elderhorst, was subsequently determined to be nothing else than hydrozincite. Analyses of the so-called Brannerite were sent by me to Prof. Penfield, who says it is a mixture of Smithsonite with some other mineral. On p. 398, Mr. Hedburg says the zinc-bearing formation of North Arkansas " is recognized as the Upper Silurian." So far as my observation goes, the ores occur both in Lower Carboniferous and in Ordovician or Lower Silurian rocks, but nowhere in rocks known to be of Upper Silurian age. If Mr. Hedburg has any paleontological evidence of the Upper Silurian age of these rocks, or of any of them, he will confer a favor upon geologists by making it known. On the same page is another statement in which I cannot concur. He says that in this region, " it can easily be seen that the largest fissure-deposits have been eroded and washed away, leaving here and there a few patches adhering to the hillsides." I am compelled to say that in many years' study of the geology of the region in question, I have never been able to recognize such a state of affairs as Mr. Hedburg here describes. The patches which he regards as remnants of fissure-veins, " adhering to the hillsides," I have found to be either the edges of bedded deposits, or portions of the zinc-bearing breccias, formed along old drainage-lines, and laid bare by the ordinary processes of erosion. That fissure-deposits have been partly removed by the same agency, goes without saying; but it is, in ,my judgment, no more true of North Arkansas than of any other mining-region that erosion has selected and washed away " the largest " deposits. The following report is published for the information of the members: Meetings. Two meetings for the reading and discussion of papers, etc., have been held during the year 1907-namely, the Ninety-second meeting, held April 16 to 20 in New York, N. Y., and the Ninety-third meeting, held July 23 to 30 in Toronto, Canada. The proceedings of these meetings, including descriptions of the entertainments and excursions connected therewith, have already been published and distributed to the members of the Institute; the New York meeting in Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 15, May, 1907, pp. 541 to 559, and the Toronto meeting in Bi-Monthly Bulletin., No. 17, September, 1907, pp. 847 to 875. In addition to these " Proceedings," there were also published in Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 15, May, 1907, an illustrated description of the United Engineering Society building (p1 vi. to xxvi.), and a record of the exercises attending its dedication, including the addresses of Andrew Carnegie, Arthur T. Hadley, Samuel Sheldon, Frederick R. Hutton, John Hays Hammond, and T. C. Martin (pp. xxxviii. to lxv.). At the New York meeting, 43 papers and- discussions were presented, and the names of 297 members and guests were registered at the Institute headquarters., this number, however, does not represent all who were present at the sessions and excursions. At the Toronto meeting, 23 papers and discussions were presented. The number of members and guests registered at the Toronto headquarters was 191, which doubtless does not include the names of all who were present at the sessions, or took part in the numerous excursions and visits around Cobalt.

BOSTON. SECTION W. E. C. EUSTIS, Chairman, H. L. AGASSIZ, Vice-Chairman., E. E. BUGBEE, Secretary-Treasurer, Mass. Inst. of Technology, Boston, Mass. ALBERT SAUVEUR, H. L. SMYTH. The 37th meeting of the Boston Section was held at the Engineers' Club, on Monday evening, Oct. 2, 1916. Fourteen members and guests attended the dinner. The Society was fortunate in having present not only the announced speaker, J. G. Carleton of Marblehead, Mass., but also a brother member from afar, Thomas Warner of California. Mr. Carleton, who has spent the' past few years in South America, gave an informal talk on the mining of the precious metals on the South American continent. He drew a comparison of the geographical distribution of the precious metals in North and South America and pointed, out the similarity in the geological occurrence of the eastern mining, regions, mentioning particularly Venezuela and Brazil. He also directed attention to the fact that the great placers of the northwestern part of North America had their counterpart in the gold-bearing region of Columbia. The marked contrast between the southern end of North America, so rich in metals, and the southern part of South America, so poor in mineral deposits, was clearly brought out. It is difficult to avoid the conclusion that the South American Cordillera is less intensely mineralized, than the corresponding mountain.

MONTANA SECTION W. C. SIDERFIN, Chairman, OSCAR ROHN, Vice-Chairman, E. B. YOUNG, Secretary-Treasurer, 526, Hennesey Building, Butte, Mont. F. W. BACORN, C. D. DEMOND. The semi-annual meeting of the Montana Section was held at the Silver Bow Club, Butte, Montana, on Friday, Nov. 16, at 8 p. m.; this was a postponement of the regular October meeting because of conflict in date with the St. Louis meeting of the Institute. An informal dinner was served to 68 members and guests. After dinner, Chairman W. C. Siderfin called the meeting to order. The minutes of the annual meeting, of Feb. 2, 1917, and the special meeting of May 21, 1917, were read and approved. C. W. Goodale led the discussion with "Notes on the St. Louis Meeting." He was followed by J. H. Warner who spoke on " The Joplin and Miami Districts," and by J. L: Bruce, Alexander Leggatt, N. B. Braly, and E. B. Young, the latter speaking on the work of the War Minerals Committee; and on the Cosden Oil Refinery at West Tuba, Okla. R. H. Sales reviewed briefly the manganese situation. E. N. Norris presented a paper on "Fire Proofing of Mine Shafts by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co." This resulted in interesting discussion by C. L. Berrien, C. E. Nighman, N. B. Braly, W. B. Daly, B. H. Dunshee, and J. J. Carrigan. C. L. Berrien and C. E. Nighman presented their papers on "Fire Extinction by Hydraulic Filling." In view of the late hour, discussion was waived. The executive committee, by unanimous consent, decided to request written discussion of the above papers to be presented at the next meeting, in February. B. B. Thayer spoke interestingly on the work of the Naval Consulting Board, and referred to the arsenic situation. Spencer Miller, also a, member of the Naval Consulting Board, entertained the-meeting with a vivid description of the method of "Coaling Battleships at Sea." Robert Sticht of Tasmania, in a short talk, spoke feelingly of his relations with the United States. At a late hour adjournment ended a most successful and interesting meeting. E. B. Maurice Rey—The influence of cyclone diameter upon the fineness of separation is an important point which, however, cannot be discussed adequately if the injection pressure or the rate of flow are not specified. Perhaps some light can be thrown on the matter by using the formulas derived by Dahlstrom. Let us consider several geometrically similar cyclones where the apertures e and b are equal and proportional to the diameter D and which are operated with the same pressure drop. Eq 8 of Dahlstrom's paper can be written: Q Q = K D'. " or. if F is constant: Q = K D18 K is a constant of proportionality. Introducing this value of Q in eq 13 gives elimination efficiency = K D ,41 Elimination efficiency, in the terminology of Dahl-strom, means the diameter of particles, in microns, which divide equally between the underflow and the overflow. This denomination is regrettable and it would be preferable to call it diameter of separation or characteristic size or any other name connoting a size rather than an efficiency. Whatever the name used, the above equation shows a slow increase in the fineness of separation when the diameter of the cyclone decreases. For example, if a 14-in. cyclone gives a 400-mesh separation (37 microns), geometrically similar cyclones, having the same pressure drop will give separations at the sizes shown below.

THE opening session of the Institute was held at Staunton, on Monday evening, May 30th, in the Opera House. Major Jed. Hotchkiss, Chairman of the Committee of Reception, called the meeting to order and introduced Mayor Balthis, who spoke a few words of welcome to the members present, and then introduced the Hon. A. H. H. Stuart. Mr. Stuart in addressing a formal welcome to the Institute to the " little city of the mountains," spoke of the value of the services of the mining engineer in developing the mineral wealth of Virginia and in solving the problems of her geological history. Mr. Metcalf, President of the Institute, replied on behalf of the Institute to the cordial welcome of the mayor and Mr. Stuart, and then read an inaugural address on Force. At the conclusion of the President's address the following papers were read The Electrolytic Determination of Copper and the Formation and Composition of so-called Allotropic Copper, by J. B. Mackintosh, Hoboken, N. J. Read by Professor Egleston. The New Unpublished Map of Chester County, Pa., by Professor Persifor Frazer, Philadelphia. The second session was held at the Opera House on Tuesday morning. A special meeting of the officers of the Columbia Section was held in Spokane, Wash., Jan. 10, 1918, for the purpose of organizing and nominating members to the principal committees of the Section. The following members were appointed representatives on the Executive Committee of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association: J. C. Haas, W. H. Linney, F. A. Ross, L. K. Armstrong. The Treasurer reported a deficit, resulting from the participation of the Section at the Northwest Mining Convention in 1916. It was recommended that the Institute be petitioned to make good this deficit, in addition to the usual annual allowance. The members of the committee who were present expressed their desire to be of greater service in the present war, and discussed at some length the possible means of carrying out their desires. It was later decided to reopen the subject at a subsequent meeting of the Section, or to present it to the Executive Committee of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association for discussion and cooperative action. Plans have been completed with only details to be arranged for the first Metals Branch Conference in the Northwest. The two day meeting will be held jointly with the Industrial Minerals Div. on Friday and Saturday, May 9 and 10, 1952, at the Davenport Hotel in Spokane, Wash. For, some time the metals activities in this area have been neglected. Expansion of metal producing and fabricating industries in Washington and neighboring states has brought sufficient interest to insure the success of such a meeting. A committee has been hard at work for several months. Nonferrous extractive metallurgy men will find an extensive program in the April issue of JOURNAL OF METALS. Sessions for iron and steel producers, physical metallurgists, and educators will make the Metals Branch picture complete. Metals Branch members residing in Washington, British Columbia, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, and Utah, or who can be in the Northwest at this time should make plans now to attend. A Metals Branch luncheon is planned for Friday and a dinner jointly with the Industrial Minerals Div. is planned for Saturday according to F. R. PENNSYLVANIA ANTHRACITE LOCAL SECTION On Saturday evening, Jan. 31, 1914, about 40 members of the Institute met at the Hotel Sterling, Wilkes Barre, Pa., for the purpose of discussing plans for the formation of a local section in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. President Rand; Prof. Joseph W. Richards, of the Board of Directors; Dr. H. M. Chance, Chairman of the Committee on Coal and Coke, and Secretary Stoughton were among the guests present. R. V. Norris acted as Master of Ceremonies, and the arrangements were all made in advance by a Committee under the leadership of Charles Enzian, to whom an enthusiastic vote of thanks was accorded at the dinner. An address was made by President Rand, followed by .Professor Richards, who outlined the procedure necessary for the formation of a Local Section. Addresses were then made by W. J. Richards, F. W. Chase,. C. F. Huber, R. J. Foster, F. A. Hill, H. M. Chance, Bradley Stoughton, and others, after which a rising vote was taken, and it was unanimously decided to petition the Board of. Directors for the establishment of the Pennsylvania -Anthracite Local Section. More than the required number of members then signed -the petition, and President Rand announced the appointment of a Committee to organize the Section and arrange for a meeting in accordance with their By-Laws, consisting of R. V. Norris, W. J. Richards, R. J. Foster, Edwin Ludlow, C. F. Huber, Charles Enzian, Douglas Bunting, F. A. Hill, and J. M. Humphrey.

On Aug. 20, 1913, the following 30 members of the Institute residing in Montana made written application to the Board of Directors of the Institute for authority to establish a local section of the Institute to be called the Montana Section, with headquarters at Butte, and having such territory as may, later be determined on. This petition was granted by the Board at its meeting in Butte, Mont., Aug. 20, 1913. The committee named at the head of this paragraph was appointed to' arrange for permanent organization of this section.

Forty-sixth Meeting The forty-sixth meeting of the Boston section was held at the University Club on Monday evening, Jan. 28, 1918. Thirty-six members and guests were present, which is a record for this Section. After a good dinner, President Philip N. Moore, of the Institute, was introduced, and spoke of the many problems of the Institute. The topics covered were the progress and growth of the Institute during the administrative year, the efforts to stimulate the local sections and to bring them more in touch with the policies and problems of the parent body and, last but not least, of the constructive results and patriotic work of the Institute in the national service of the war. The other guest of the Section, Mr. Thomas Nelson Perkins, Counsel for the Priority Board, spoke most entertainingly of recent experiences in Russia, England and France. After considerable discussion during which Mr. Perkins most obligingly answered innumerable questions, the meeting adjourned at about 10 p. m.
