IN the belief that a critical study of its operating problems might be a sound investment, the Cuban American Manganese Corporation initiated an ore-treatment research in cooperation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the early objectives of this research naturally became the relationship of the microscopy of the Cuban ores of the Corporation to their flotation treatment. The operations in Cuba have already been described by F. S. Norcross, Jr.7 and the laboratory study of manganese oxide flotation goes back a number of years .4 Broadly speaking, the difficulties encountered in the flotation of manganese ores are that the consumption of reagents is extremely high, the concentrate contains more silica than is desirable and the tailing losses are relatively high. An appreciable betterment on any of these scores would achieve a definite betterment in costs, quantity of minable ores, and quality of product. The microscope study discussed in this paper was made on samples from the Quinto mine, from the Ponupo mine, and from mill products at various stages of passage of the ore through the mill. The writers have had access to Company records and in particular to the petro¬graphic studies made on thin sections of ore by the late Professors R. J. Colony and Philip Krieger, of Columbia University. They acknowledge their debt to both of these men for the help derived from the reports. Manganese oxides are black, friable, smudging. It is, therefore, very difficult to judge operations by inspection. The mineralogy of manganese compounds seems to be confused, and the authors believe that many more minerals have been described than actually exist. Much of this difficulty is due to the prevalence of the structural conditions that will be discussed further in this paper; namely, the porosity and the friability of the ores, and the extremely intimate association of minute manganiferous mineral crystals with impurities of various sorts. By all odds the most important manganese mineral in Cuba is the one that in this paper is called "psilomelane." The name "psilomelane" has been used in so many different ways that the choice of it for this ore may not be approved by all. However, it seems to be the best under the circumstances. This mineral accounts for about 97 per cent of the manganese in the ores of the Quinto and Ponupo mines and in the mill feed. The remaining odd 3 per cent consists mostly of pyrolusite together with minor amounts of other manganese oxide minerals. Much time has been devoted, by metallurgists, to the study of steel after solidification and remarkable strides have been made in the heat treatment of steel, but less knowledge is available of the thermophysical activity of the constituents of steel prior to solidification in the mold. It is known that certain elements added to steel produce marked changes in physical properties, also that other elements added to steel produce similar changes, but we have only meager knowledge as 'to. how these elements combine in steel under different conditions of solidification. It is not sufficient to know, from chemical analysis, that a certain element is present in steel. We should know how this element is in combination with the other elements and whether the combination is such as will give the greatest physical properties. Certain elements go into solid solution with the iron, while others segregate to the grain boundaries and combine with the impurities collected there. Until it is known where an alloy produces the most beneficial effect and a means is determined for controlling its physical location by altering solidification conditions, or otherwise, we will not obtain the maximum value from our alloys. When molten steel freezes, it forms a heterogeneous mass of various crystalline constituents; and as the transformation of steel from a liquid state to the solid crystallized state is a critical step, involving as great a transfer of heat as any other operation in the making of finished steel, a variation in the rate of this heat transfer will have much to do with the arrangement of the various constituents in the solid state. The object of this paper is to show some of the effects on steel caused by variations in the rate of cooling in the ingot mold, particularly as to ingotism, segregation, dendrites, and intergranular material.

This report covers the period from Jan. I, 1943 to Dec. 31, 1943. During the year, II2 wells were drilled in Mississippi, as foilows: wildcats drilled and abandoned, 54; wildcats producing oil, 4; oil wells drilled in oil fields, 26; oil wells drilled in fields, dry and abandoned, 10; sulphur-test wells drilled, 14; salt-water-disposal wells, 3; core tests, I. Prospecting Geophysical work in Mississippi during 1943 amounted to 1127 crew weeks, divided as follows: reflection seismograph, 809 weeks; gravity meter, 285; magnotometer, 30; torsion balance, 3. A considerable amount of core drilling was done over a large part of the state. The complete data on this activity are not available at the present time. Salt Domes To date, the following salt domes have been discovered in Mississippi: Midway, Edwards, Glass, Newman, Tatum, Oak-vale, Kings, Halifax, D'Lo, Hazlehurst, Byrd, Leedo, Prentiss, Carson, Moselle, Monticello, Ruth, Keno, Taylorsville. New Oil Fields Lincoln County.—On March 10, 1943, the California Company completed its Smith No. I in sec. 4, T. 7 N., R. 7 E., Lincoln County, as an oil well and produced 29 bbl. of 25" gravity oil in 24 hr. through a fi-in. choke. Two outpost wells have been drilled in this area by the California Company, and both have been abandoned as dry holes. Madison County. —Love Petroleum Co. completed its J. R. Anderson No. 2, sec. 2, T. 8 N., R. I W., Madison County, on Sept. 7, 1943. This well produced 135 bbl. of approximately 30" gravity- oil in 24 hr. through a )/4-in. choke. The production comes from a sand or porosity in the upper part of the Chalk formation of the Cretaceous age. Adams County.—The California Company drilled its National Gasoline Co. of Louisiana No. I in sec. 52, T. 7 N., R. I W., to a total depth of 10,383 ft., and at 10,280 ft, it perforated and obtained gas and a condensate. The well had several showings in the Wilcox of the Eocene age. Several of these showings were tested and the well finally was completed at 5888 ft. on Oct. 6, 1943, producing 44" gravity oil in the second sand in this formation. No other wells were completed in this field during the year. However, a number of wells are contemplated in the near future, and locations have been staked by the California Company. The Oklahoma Pipe Line Co. will market the oil through its pipe-line facilities. Wayne County.—The Gulf Refining Co. drilled Davis No. I in sec. 2, T. 9 N., R. 9 W. in Wayne County. After several stem tests 545'-in. casing was set at 6850 ft. and production was obtained in the so-called Massive Sand of the Lower Tuscaloosa. The well produced 359 bbl. of oil in 24 hr., and it Was completed on Oct. 4, 1943. Other locations have been staked ill this area and probably will be drilled in 1944 by

A REPORT that it did not pay to use present-day galvanized iron on account of the short life of the material, accompanied by proofs of the state-ment in the form of a tabulated history of the first costs of various kinds of building materials and their main-tenance expense, started an investigation of modern galvanized products. At the very outset it was apparent that our experience with galvanized products was by no means unique. Correspondence with the State Agricultural Depart-ments, the Agricultural Experiment Stations, the County Agents and State Granges all over the United States brought a mass of complaint on this same score. Visits to large buyers of galvanized sheet and wire revealed the same condition coupled with an ever-increasing use of substitutes for galvanized iron. We believe, therefore, that the title of this article is fully warranted by the experience of the consuming public. A study of the proceedings of the various societies having to do with the testing and use of sheet iron and steel products revealed a tremendous amount of work on the life of the base metal itself. Great stress was laid on differences in life of various types of iron and steel, the difference amounting at best to months rather than years. Very little recent attention has been paid to a study of the life of the zinc coating and the causes of its present-day lack of durability. There have been some real exposure studies published, how-ever, which show that the weight of the zinc coating determines the protection afforded by the galvanizing, which is of far greater influence on the life than the base-metal composition. An interesting paper was published by the Phillipine Journal of Science in 1916, entitled: "Galvanized Roofing in the Phillipines," a contribution from the Bureau of Science of the Phillipine Island Government. The author, Mr. Arguelles, found on 18 old galvanized sheets, after from 30 to 35 years' exposure, from 2.3 to 4.1 oz. of zinc per sq. ft. of sheet and sums up the study by saying: Of the various factors influencing the durability of galvanized iron which have been studied with a view towards accounting for the difference in behavior of old and modern sheet, it appears evident that the greater weight of zinc per unit of area on the former accounts for the greater durability.

The Oso tunnel is one of three tunnels located on the San Juan-Chama Project in south-central Colorado. The purpose of the tunnel is to carry water from the upper San Juan watershed through the Continental Divide into the Rio Grande watershed. The Oso tunnel contract was awarded by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to a joint venture of Boyles Brothers Drilling Co., Gibbons & Reed Co., and Cimco in February 1966. The Oso tunnel is 26,660 ft long and has a rock section of 10 ft, 2 in. with a lined diameter of 8 ft circular. The main portion of the rock formation was in the Lewis shale. This formation is quite consistent in hardness and texture with exception of localized limestone concretions and sandy siltstone inclusions. The job was bid on the basis of using a James S. Robbins mole of the P221 series. The decision for using a mole was predicated on the geology and the experience of the same joint venture on the adjoining Azotea tunnel where a mole was successfully used. The Robbins P221 series mole is capable of cutting from 9 ft, 11 in. to a 10 ft, 7 in. diam without any major change. It is 40 ft long and weighs 60 tons. The cutting head has 22 disk-type cutters and one center pilot (standard 9 7/8 -in.) tricone bit. The head is powered by four 75 hp electric motors. Gripper pads at about the midway point on each side of the machine are pushed into the tunnel ribs and thrust-cylinders in front of each gripper apply pressure to the face as the head rotates. The regripping cycle is 3 ft and then the grippers are retracted and advanced. Each cutter on the perimeter of the head is followed by a bucket which scoops up the cut material, almost in the same manner as a water wheel, and dumps it into a conveyor situated along the top of the mole. Many of the difficult operating problems of the preparation of coal for market, of sampling coal shipments and in the utilization of coal are caused by segregation in the coal mass. Segregation may be of two kinds: i.e., "size segregation," in which particles of the same size in a mass of coal containing a range of sizes collect together and "density segregation," in which particles of the same density or specific gravity in a mass of particles of varying density gather together. Mechanics of Segregation Size segregation cannot take place with closely sized coal. As the size range increases, the tendency for size segregation increases. Similarly, cleaned coal with particles of approximately the same specific gravity have very little tendency for density segregation. The wider the density range of particles and the more particles of different density, the greater the chances are for density segregation. The following discussion deals primarily with coal of a wide size range as screenings and of wide density differences as uncleaned or run-of-mine screenings. If a mass of coal containing particles of a wide size range is subject to the stream action of a moving current of water, the small particles are transported farther than the coarser. Particles of different density in a stream of moving water are subject to the laws of classification, the heavier settling out first. An investigation of the factors af-fec.ting the inter-zonal flow of fluids in the casing-wellbore annrc1rt.s of an oil or gas ivell is presented Laborntory tests revealed that failure of the caring-cement bond allows communi-cation of fluid at pressure differentials near 1.000 psi. Perforating with a 11011011: carrier gun does not shatter or crack the cement sufficiently to allow communication through these cracks and does not seriously affect the casing-cement bond failure pressure. The pressure to cause communication at the casing-cement bond can he increared to 3,000 psi by. limiting pipe deformation during cementing and subsequent operations. Communication can be prevented, however. up to pressures sufficient to cause the cement to fail or the casing to col-lapse, by attaching to the casing a seal ring of deformable ruhber molded between two steel flanges. When installed, one flange is attached rigidlv to the casing to serve as back-up for the gasket While tile other flange is movable. To date, these gasket seal rings have been field-tested in 27 Wells. Althotrgh communication has been noted in two wells, inter-zonal flow has been prevented in other wells in the same area by installing more seal rings between the communicaring zones. INTRODUCTION The inter-zonal flow of fluids behind casing cemented in oil wells during normal production or stimulation operations is a major operating problem. If it cccurs during production operations. it can seriously limit the pressure to which a reservoir may be depleted without harmful invasion of unwanted fluids. If it occurs during stimulation operations, it may preclude the possibility of stimulating the desired zone. This communication can be caused by failure of the bond between the casing and cement, failure of the bond between the cement and formation, or failure of the cement itself. This paper presents the results of an investigation of factors affecting com-munication at the casing-cement bond and methods which aid in preventing it. LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS The laboratory tests performed in this study were divided into three phases. The first phase consisted of tests to determine if perforating would shatter and crack the cement sheath so severely that communication would occur through the cement itself. The second phase consisted of tests to determine more precisely the cause for the casing-cement bond failure. The third phase consisted of tests to evaluate the effectiveness of various de-formable seals attached to the casing in preventing communication. EFFECT OF PERFORATING, The effect of perforating was invest~gated in tests performed with apparatus shown on Fig. 1. Cement was poured into the annulur space hetween 5%-in. casing and 8%-in. casing and allowed to cure for 72 hours. The apparatus was then perforated with a hollow carrier gun containing eight duPont 26-A shaped charges. Bull plugs were placed over the perforations in the 8 5/8-in. casing and hydraulic pressure was applied inside the 5 1/2i-in. casing. The pressure to cause fluid communication past the cement sheath was observed and termed the "bond failure pressure". Several different cement compositions were included in these tests, the results of which are shown in Table 1. In Tests 1 through 4 of Table 1, bond failure occurred at- the inter- .

THE town of Jerome is located in Yavapai County in north central Arizona. It has a population of over 6000 people and the two important mines of the district, the United Verde and the United Verde Extension, lie almost within its limits. Perched high on the southwest side of the Verde Valley, at elevations of 4800 and 5500 ft.. (1463 and 1676 m.), both mines have long tunnels from their lower levels through which ore is hauled to their respective smelters. The two smelter towns of Clarkdale and Verde, out in. the center of the valley and about 2000 ft. (609 m.) below, form part of the wide panorama that meets the eye at Jerome. This panorama and the topographic and surface features and the geologic formations are shown in a separate pamphlet. In the vicinity of Jerome, the great southern escarpment of the Arizona plateau forms the northeast side of the Verde valley. The general level of this escarpment, or "the rim" as it is called, is about 4000 ft. above the Verde River. A corresponding elevation is reached only by the, highest parts of the Black Hills, which bound the valley to the southwest. The two lava-capped mesas, known as Mingus and Woodschute Mountains, form the culmination of the Black Hills. That part of the old Black Hills mining district which lies between their crests -and the Verde River is now known as the Jerome or Verde copper district. However, if the smelters are not included, a strip about 7 mi. long and 3 mi. wide (11 by 5 km.) embraces practically all the properties belonging to the Jerome district. This strip lies parallel to and along the side of the Verde valley from about First View, 2 mi. northwest of Jerome, to the neighborhood of Allen Spring, near the south end of Mingus. Mountain. The rank of the district in copper production, as well as features of peculiar geologic interest in connection with the ore occurrences, entitle the district to much more consideration than it has received in the literature of copper mining. Arizona stands preeminent as a copper-producing state. In 1918, it produced four-tenths of the total amount produced in the United States, and nearly equaled the, combined production of its three chief competitors, Montana, Michigan, and Utah. IN recent years an ever increasing amount of interest has been directed toward research studying the principles and various applications of sonic and supersonic waves. Though still in their early stages of practical development, sonic vibrations are already used in the emulsification and degasification of liquids. Metals exposed to sonic or ultrasonic vibrations while solidifying show a considerable amount of grain refinement. Often sound waves are applied instead of radiography to test engineering materials for internal cracks and flaws.1 In the field of pure research these waves are used in dispersion and also in coagulation of particles or liquids in gaseous or, under certain conditions, in other liquid systems. In the settling and thickening of slurries considerable time is necessary to compress the solid particles and to squeeze out the liquid to obtain as low a dilution (liquid to solid ratio) as possible. Various methods have been developed to increase the amount of coagulation of the very fine solids (colloidal or semicolloidal) and to shorten the over-all time. The addition of small amounts of electrolytes and the warming of the suspension represent merely the more important techniques. Some of the effects of supersonic vibrations have been reported previously.2,6 From preliminary studies, therefore, it was hoped that by application of sonic vibrations it would be possible to reduce the time required to thicken such materials to a specific dilution, as well as to thicken to lower ultimate dilutions than could be obtained by quiescent settling alone. By increasing the volume thickened per unit time-i.e., improving the plant efficiency-great savings in equipment and time would be obtained for industrial processes. Also, faster settling rates should result if coagulation of particles could be increased. Experiments have been conducted for a period of several months in the Allis-Chalmers laboratory to study the effect of sonic vibrations on settling of particles of different sizes and concentrations. APPARATUS The sedimentation apparatus used in these experiments is illustrated in Figs. I and 2. The essential features are the stationary field coil and the movable voice coil. Both windings are placed around a solid iron core. A leather diaphragm connected to the steel frame holds the voice coil in place. A brass rod is fastened to the voice coil with a metal disk connected to the other end. This disk is sealed to the lucite cylinder with a flexible rubber diaphragm. The lucite tube is 17 in. long; its inner diameter is 2 ½in. and the wall thickness is ¼ in. The tube is calibrated on the outside in 10 c.c. divisions for a total of 1000 cubic centimeters.

THE Tri-State district, as outlined in this paper, refers to the entire mineralized area in southwestern Missouri, southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma (Fig. 1). The part of the district in Missouri and near Galena, Kans., is still sometimes referred to as the Joplin district (Fig. 2). The Picher-Miami area is that part of the Tri-State district located contiguously in Kansas and Oklahoma in the vicinity of Baxter Springs, Picher and Miami. This paper is confined almost wholly to the ore deposits of the Tri-State district and particularly to the Picher-Miami area. Our study of the ore deposits of this district dates from late in 1925 (by Fowler) and early in 1927 (by Lyden) to the present. Our work has been confined almost entirely to the search for ore for numerous companies and individuals. It was not possible for us to undertake numerous highly interesting investigations which presented themselves but which would not immediately help in finding ore. We particularly refer to the general structural geology of the Ozark uplift, the genesis of the ore, and other problems of a similar nature. The local and general structural problems of the district are being solved gradually as the work progresses. The factors that control the loci of the several orebodies are evident. This paper is based almost exclusively upon our own observations. Most of the important mines in the Picher-Miami area were studied in detail. A map (Fig. 5) is included which shows this area and the properties we have examined to date. When it was convenient we visited, studied and compared structural relations in numerous mines in states outside the district. Some of these observations are noted in this paper.

The binary alloy system Mo-C zoas investigated by means of X-ray, metallog/aphic, thermoanalytical, and melting-point techniques on chemically analyzed specimens. The system, Fig. 39, is characterized by three congruently melting, intermediate phases, Mo2C, n MoCi-x, and aMoC1-,, of which only Mo,C is stable at temperatures below 1650°C. Substoichio-metrzc (~32.5 at. pct C) dimolybdenum carbide undergoes a homogeneous sublattice order-disorder transformation at temperatures of approximately 1400°C, whereas hyperstoichiorrletric compositions undergo a discontinuous Phase change. The order-disorder transitions in the Me, C phases are discussed in terms of the structural changes involved in the transformation processes and the absence of long-range sublattice coherency in stoichiometric or hyperstoiclziomet-ric compositions attributed to the impossibility of obtaining long-range order in a linear chain of alternating carbon atoms and vacancies. From the experimental phase relutionships and the known thermody-namic data for Mo2 C, limits for the free energies of formation for the high-temperature phases r) MoC1-, and aMoC1-, are deriued and found to be in good agreement with data previously obtained from phase equilibria in ternary metal-carbon systems. IN the course of studies of the high-temperature phase relationships in ternary systems of refractory transition metals with carbon,' a number of inconsistencies found in previous work necessitated a reex-amination of some of the related metal-carbon binaries. When silver chloride deforms by pencil glide at temperatures of 26ºand 72°C, grain size has no effect upon the proportional limit and the material necks down to a knife edge under tension. At -196ºC, deformation takes place on fewer slip systems to produce straight slip traces, the flow stress becomes sensitive to grain size and fracture occurs by cleavage from an intergranular source without any reduction in area. THERE are significant differences between the appearance of the slip bands formed in silver chloride and in the alkali halides at room temperature. The bands in sodium chloride, e.g., are fine and geometrically straight, whereas in silver chloride they are coarse and wavy.' Such differences in the slip behavior prompted us to inquire what the effects of grain boundaries might be on the mechanical properties of these solids. As an introduction to a general study of ionic poly-crystal behavior, we have investigated the effect of grain size on the stress-strain relationships in silver chloride at different temperatures. We have chosen silver chloride chiefly because polycrystals can be easily prepared free from cracks and macroscopic voids by conventional techniques. Moreover, as we shall see, the slip behavior can be readily modified by changing the temperature. It will be shown that the effect of grain size on the yield stress of silver chloride is strikingly dependent upon the temperature of deformation and that this temperature effect comes about through a change in the number of slip systems which operate at the onset of plastic flow. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Polycrystalline tensile specimens were made by recrystallizing cold-rolled AgCl sheet. Thirty-gram quantities of AR grade silver chloride powder were melted in a low heat capacity furnace, cast into cylindrical forms 3/4 in. in dim and approximately 1 in. in length and then extruded with a 16:l reduction ratio into rods 3/16 in. in dim. Extrusion temperatures were varied from room temperature to 350°C. In order to impart various degrees of cold'work to the extruded rod. All extrusions were then cross rolled to sheet 0.040 in. in thickness at room temperature and machined to form tensile specimens having a gage length of 0.750 in. with a width of either 0.250 or 0.145 in.* Annealing was carried out in an air oven at 200°C for periods up to 20 hr. specimens having average grain diameters ranging from 0.024 to 0.40 mm were prepared by varying the extrusion temperature and annealing time in the conventional manner. To obtain specimens with grain sizes larger than 0.40mm, lightly deformed thin prisims of silver chloride single crystals (supplied by Harshaw Chemical Co.) were recrystallized. Grain size determinations were made by an intercept method and revealed that the grains were equi-axed. Laue back-reflection X-ray patterns showed little tendency to form a preferred orientation texture. Specimens which were to be used for the slip band studies were polished by immersion in fresh boiling concentrated NH,OH for 60 sec. They were then etch polished for 10 sec on each side by hand lapping on a stationary velveteen lap wetted with a dilute Hypo solution (5 g of Kodak Acid Fixer in 100 cc H20). Finally the specimens were rinsed in warm water and alcohol, blown dry and carefully mounted in the tensile machine for testing. Tensile tests were performed at three temperatures, namely, 26º, -72º, and -196°C. A screw-driven hard tensile machine was used at a constant strain rate of 0.006 in. per in. per min. Loads were determined with a light- proof ring fitted with A-18 strain gages and extensions were measured with a 0.0001 in. dial gage. Constant level baths of alcohol with dry ice and liquid nitrogen were used to maintain the two lower test temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Reproducibility—In view of the light sensitivity and reactive nature of silver chloride, it was necessary to determine whether reproducibility depended upon either exposure to light or to the condition of the surface. Pegmatites of these areas have become important sources of beryl and lepidolite and have yielded cassiterite, columbite-tantalite, and other minerals. Examination of about 60 of these pegmatites leads the author to question the opinion of earlier investigators that the concentrations of beryl, lepidolite, and columbite-tantalite found have mostly formed by hydrothermal or pneumatolytic replacement of previously formed quartz-feldspar pegmatites. The author concludes, on the contrary, that present knowledge of the occurrence of minerals in zoned pegmatites can be applied to prospecting and mining of pegmatite deposits in these two areas of South West Africa. PEGMATITES occur in abundance in certain areas of South West Africa and in adjacent parts of northern Cape Province in the Union of South Africa. Some of the pegmatite deposits were prospected before World War I, and intermittent mining was done during the period between the two World Wars. The deposits of the Jooste lithium mines became an important source of lepidolite, and beryl, columbite-tantalite, wolframite, and other minerals were produced. Since World War II prospecting and mining have been carried on vigorously, with the result that South West Africa produced nearly 3000 tons of beryl during 1949 through 1953, together with more than 40,000 tons of lithium minerals, chiefly lepidolite and petalite. Small amounts of tantalite, columbite, and other minerals have also been produced during the postwar period. Most of this mineral production has come from two pegmatite areas roughly outlined in Fig. 1. One is the Karibib-Omaruru area of north central South West Africa. The second is the northeastern part of the Orange River pegmatite area, which extends into adjacent parts of Namaqualand, in northern Cape Province of the Union of South Africa. The writer visited the two pegmatite areas in July 1951. The visit was brief. but it gave an opportunity to compare some of the' pegmatites of these areas with those studied and described in detail by many investigators in the U. S., Brazil, and Canada during and since World War 11.'-l' The writer has attempted to determine, in a preliminary way, whether the concepts of internal structure and distribution of minerals in pegmatite bodies developed out of these studies are applicable to prospecting and exploration of pegmatites in South West Africa. Previous Work In an important series of papers (1929 to 1942) T. W. Gevers, H. I?. Frommurze, S. H. Haughton, G. K. Joubert, and other geologists of the Geological Survey of South Africa described and discussed the pegmatites of the two areas.*-" These works are the principal sources of information on the pegmatite mineral deposits of South West Africa. The investigations showed that in the two areas pegmatites are profusely distributed in pre-Cambrian rocks. These rocks are meta-igneous and metasedimentary units that have been folded and subsequently invaded by younger pre-Cambrian granites and by other igneous rocks. The pegmatites are considered to be genetically related to the pre-Cambrian granites. Pegmatites occur in the granite bodies themselves but are most abundant in the surrounding metamor-phic rocks, a pattern repeated in many pegmatite districts of the world. The origin of the pegmatites and the factors controlling the occurrence of mineral deposits in them were discussed at length by Gevers and Frommurze (1929)" and later by Gevers 14, 15 pp. 41-51, Ref.

This plant, near Marysville, Mont., was planned to treat the ore from the Piegan and Gloster mines, the latter being one of the early and famous producers of the Marysville district. When the mill was closed in 1888, treatment consisted of stamp milling, followed by pans and settlers for pan amalgamation. The extraction was evidently poor, because, a few years later, thousands of tons of tailings were re-treated by the ranchers in the valley below the mill, by the then new cyanide process, and gave a handsome profit. In 1914, the present owners, after laboratory tests and an experimental mill run, decided upon the following treatment: crushing to 40 mesh in cyanide solution, concentration, amalgamation, classification, and cyani-dation of sands by leaching, and of slime by agitation and decantation in charges. The ore averaged about $7 per ton, gold and silver, the ratio of weight being 1 oz. gold to 7.56 oz. silver. The ratio of gold and silver in tailings was 1 oz. Au to 36.6 oz. Ag; the quartz was sharp and sandy, however finely ground, and rather difficult to slime. The mechanical equipment was a No. 5 Symons gyratory crusher; three 10-ft. Lane slow-speed Chilean mills; one Wilfley roughing and one finishing table; one submerged-type Akins classifier; five 26 by 10-ft. fir leaching tanks; one 24 by 7-ft. Dorr thickener; four 14 by 16-ft. Dorr agitators; four 6-compartment double-row zinc-boxes having compartments 18 in. wide, 18 in. deep, and 34 in. long; Johnson zinc lathe; acid and vacuum filter tanks for treating precipitate; roasting furnace; and Case tilting No. 275 crucible furnace for melting precipitate. The mill is driven by electric power supplied by the Montana Power Co. at the following rates, per kw.-hr.: 200 to 300 hp., 0.68 c.; 300 to 500 hp., 0.61 c.; 500 to 750 hp., 0.55 c.; plus $1 per month per installed motor horsepower. The plant as above described was operated from May, 1915, to the end of the year, when an additional Dorr thickener and a 12 by 12-ft. Portland revolving filter were added, increasing the nominal capacity of 100 tons per 24 hr., but not the percentage of extraction. The work of Merical and other investigators indicates that the phenomenon of age-hardening in alloys of the duralumin type is primarily dependent upon the variation in the solubility of copper with temperature. In addition to copper, however, these alloys contain small amounts of magnesium, silicon, manganese and iron, which may affect the age-hardening either directly or indirectly. The effect of these elements on the solubility of copper and on the manner in which this solubility varies with the temperature is of considerable interest, therefore.
