Rock mechanics, like all engineering disciplines, must have a theoretical foundation. The subject of this chapter is the formulation of analytical methods that may aid in the rational design and determination of the stability of engineering structures in competent brittle rock materials. By an engineering structure in rock, we mean any (1) excavated sub- surface opening, (2) open surface structure, or (3) system of openings in rock that is virtually self-supporting-that is, not requiring artificial systems to carry structural stresses.

Processes employing 'controlled at-mospheres in the heat-treatment of metals and alloys are now well established on an industrial scale, and the general principles involved and the advantages to be gained in the use of the technique have received considerable publicity over a period of years. During this time the greatest emphasis has been on the establishment of the process in industry, the main effort being devoted to development work on various types of atmospheres, their useful fields of application and the design of suitable heat-treatment furnaces in which they are to be used. The various types of controlled atmospheres are fairly well standardized, but there still remains a considerable field for the investigation of related problems, in connection with both the gas-generating equipment and the surface chemistry of the heat-treatment of metals, especially in complex controlled atmospheres. This paper describes certain investigations of this nature that were carried out in England up to 1939. The development of processes employing controlled atmospheres has been asso-ciated to a very large extent with the heat-treatment of steels, both because of the major importance of steel in industry and the many diverse and dificult prob-lems of surface chemistry involved when steels of such a wide range of composition are heated in the presence of active gases. Controlled atmospheres such as disso-ciated and burnt ammonia or charcoal gas are used in the heat-treatment of low-carbon and high-carbon steels, but from certain points of view a suitable atmosphere generated by the partial combustion of city gas is to be preferred. Both the ammonia derivatives are comparatively expensive, and even if the burnt ammonia is regenerated, thereby reducing operating costs, the capital expenditure of the gas plant may make it prohibitive for the smaller type of furnace installation. Charcoal-gas generators are not without their operating difficulties especially those associated with the quality of the charcoal, clinker formation and the removal of carbon dust from the generated gas. City gas has the advantage of being comparatively cheap and "on tap" in most if not all industrial centers. The use of raw city gas as a protective atmosphere in the heat-treatment of steels has been described,' but it presents certain difficulties because of its complex composition and its explosive nature when mixed with air. These factors, together with the tendency toward sooting at elevated temperatures, arising mainly from the hydrocarbon gases present, all militate against its use as a protective atmosphere in industrial furnaces. REINARTZ, Middletown, Ohio.-Mr. Carl Peirce has presented a valuable paper on a subject that has been very widely discussed in recent years, especially since the demand for high finish, deep drawing and other grades of sheet steel in the lower carbon ranges has become an important factor in the steel business. Steel of this analysis has been produced for many years, but the product for which it was made did not require the extra care in the steel plant that it does today. It must now be worked down into thin sheets for special purposes and undergo many severe finishing processes both in the steel mill and in the fabricating plants. Mr. Peirce's paper has outlined in a concise and logical manner the steps which must be taken in manufacturing such steels. The secret of successs is attention to details of well known steel practices. I agree with him that quality steels of this class cannot normally be made out of inferior raw materials. Scrap should be clean and if possible not too variable in analysis. Galvanized scrap or babbit are particularly objectionable. Scrap should be in such physical condition that undue delays are not encountered in charging the furnace. Limestone should preferably contain over 95 per cent. available calcium carbonate, and be free from clay or other foreign substances. Almost universal practice shows that 10 per cent. limestone is required for proper slag volumes to protect the metal from over oxidation. The use of 8 per cent. limestone makes the operation less fool-proof.

Reginald S. Dean (Manganese Extraction by Carbamate Solutions and the Chemistry of New Manganese-Ammonia Complexes, P. 55) was born in Rolla, Mo. and attended the Missouri School of Mines. Mr. Dean has worked as metallurgist with Western Electric Co. from 1920 to 1929 and with U. S. Bureau of Mines from 1929 to 1946 as chief metallurgist and assistant director, and has been a metallurgical consultant in Washington, D. C. since 1946. An AIME member, Mr. Dean has presented at least 50 papers before the society. Mr. Dean is a member of American Society of Metals, American Chemical Society and Electrochemical Society. C. O. Dale (Illinois Operations of the Eagle Picher Mining and Smelting Co., co-author with W. J. Rundel, P. 72) was born in Twin Bridges, Mont. and attended Montana School of Mines and received his B.S. in mining engineering in 1944. Mr. Dale was with U. S. Navy Air Corps. as an electronics technician and worked as an engineer with C. O. Dale & Sons, Anaconda Copper Mining Co. and with Eagle Picher Mining & Smelting Co. At present he is Wisconsin manager of Eagle Picher Mining & Smelting Co. The application of machinery to mining is of special interest to Mr. Dale. A member of AIME, Mr. Dale is on the Room and Pillar or Stope and Pillar Committee of Mining Subdivision for 1951 to 1952. Mr. Dale is a member of Montana Society of Engineers and Lions Club. Golfing, fishing and wood working are his hobbies.

THE practice of using acid-lined converters at the plant of the Old Dominion Copper Mining & Smelting Co. was discontinued early in January, 1913, and they were replaced by basic-lined converters. The new equipment consists of one electrically operated 12-ft. upright converter stand and two basic-lined shells for same. These shells are provided with twenty-four 1 1/4-in. tuyères. The mouths are 5 ft. in diameter. Owing to the fact that there is no bedding system or other large storage capacity between the mine and the smelter, the furnaces must handle as fast as produced ore and concentrates, which may vary considerably from day to day, both in tonnage and copper content. Consequently the converter is often crowded to its utmost capacity by the frequent fluctuations in the daily matte supply. From the foregoing, it will be seen that in no way can the converter be favored by running light charges or by transferring to it from other stands in operation. Neither can it regularly be allowed to cool between blows, and only occasionally can it be run at as low a temperature as might be wished. No copper precipitate or other foreign material high in copper is available to help out the tonnage. Repairs and alterations or the removal of defective tuyères must wait until such time as a slight falling off in the matte supply-allows the converting operations to ease up. These variable conditions all combine to interfere with the systematic operating of the converter.

This paper describes some of the unique features in mineralogy, milling, and water treatment operation at Grey Eagle. In addition, major start-up problems in the mill and water treatment plant are discussed along with measures taken to correct these problems.

The technology of nickel-activated sintering of tungsten powder has been successfully applied to the densification of plasma-sprayed tungsten. Nickel was added by infiltration in a zinc solution followed by evaporation of the solvent. After sintering one hour at 1300°C density 95 pct of theoretical and transverse rupture strength of 74,000 psi were obtained. Shrinkage was found to be anisotropic and the mechanism of densification was comparable to that found in the nickel-activated sintering of tungsten powder. 1 HE use of a plasma spray gun for the fabrication of massive tungsten parts has become increasingly interesting. Applications now exist where a deposit in the as-sprayed condition is satisfactory. However, these deposits are generally characterized by a lamellar anisotropic microstructure containing 15 pct porosity of which, typically, two-thirds is open to the surface. Mechanically, the as-sprayed deposits fail at relatively low stress levels with a biscuit-like fracture. As a result of these problems the possibility of improving structure and strength by sintering treatments subsequent to spraying is particularly attractive. Preferably this sintering treatment should be adaptable to large bodies of sprayed metal. The similarity between the as-sprayed tungsten structure and that of a powder compact suggests that the relatively low-temperature activated sintering technique1 might be profitably employed in the densification of plasma-sprayed tungsten. It was the purpose of the present investigation to develop a technique for introducing the nickel-activating agent into the sprayed structure, to evaluate the amount and mechanism of densification obtained as a function of time and temperature, and to obtain an indication of the relative strength before and after sintering. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Powder used for spraying was purchased from the Wah Chang Corp. in several size fractions ranging from an average size of 4 to 150 . These powders were sized further for an explicit study of the influence of average feed size on densification. All powders were dried at 200°C before use. Spraying was accomplished with a Plasma Flame unit manufactured by Thermal Dynamics Corp. Several modifications of the unit were helpful in conducting the investigation. A variable speed auger feed mechanism coupled with the carrier gas mecha nism facilitated the use of fine particle sizes. A coil of ten turns of copper tubing in series with the arc power and concentrically would around the nozzle improved nozzle life and extended the range of operating currents available. The function of the auxiliary coil was to cause the arc to spin and to prevent impingement at only one point in the nozzle. Normally air sprayed deposits were made with an arc maintained at 400 amp at 50 to 70 v. The arc was blown by a gas mixture containing from 5 pct H, 95 pct N for the finest powder feed sizes ranging to 20 pct H, 80 pct N for the coarsest size. The flow rate was maintained at 100 cu ft per hr NTP through a nozzle of 0.25 in. ID. When apraying in air, the powder stream was directed toward an aluminum substrate for ease of mechanical removal of the deposit. The substrate was cooled by diverting the plasma flame with an air jet, and a second jet was directed on the deposit surface. In this configuration a gun-to-work distance of 2 to 3 in. was found to be satisfactory. Fig. 1 represents a typical as-sprayed deposit micro-structure. Laboratory studies of protective atmosphere spraying were carried out in cylindrical chamber 8 in. in diam by 18 in. in length. In operating the nozzle attached to such a chamber, particular care was required to avoid nozzle burn out due to reduced gas flow. The structure and density of the chamber sprayed deposits varied over wide ranges depending on substrate temperature. For the purposes of this investigation, flat deposits were made approximately 2 in. sq by 3/8 in. thick. From these deposits individual samples were cut an ground to a rectangular shape typically 1 1/2 in. by 1/8 in. sq such that the long dimension was perpendicular to the spraying direction. For the study of shrinkage anisotropy deposits up to one inch thick were produced. From these, rectangular samples were cut having a longer dimension parallel to the spraying axis. Prior to the addition of activating agent, the samples were deoxidized in hydrogen at 800°C for 20 min. No detectable dimensional or microstructural change was observed after this treatment. Using a modified Udin, Shaler, and Wulff technique, the surface tension of gold Udin, purified helium was found to be 1400 ± 65 dynes per cm for the temperature range 1017° to 1042°C. IN the original Udin, Shaler, and Wulff technique for measuring the surface tension of copper: variously weighted wires were allowed to extend or contract in a copper cell held at elevated temperatures in vacuum. By plotting stress vs. strain for a wire array in one test, the stress at zero strain is obtained. This is the point where the contractile forces resulting from surface tension are balanced by the applied load, according to the expression: y = e=o r [1] where y is the surface tension in dynes per cm; a,,,, the stress at zero strain in dynes per cm; and T, the radius of the wire in cm. The assumption that the wires deform viscously permits the drawing of a straight line through the points on the stress-strain plot. Justification of the assumption has received further experimental support recently.'-' The presence of grain boundaries in the wires requires a correction to the original expression used." Thus: y = d4=T [l- (dl) (ar)Y1 [2] where, n/l is the number of grain boundaries per unit length, and a, the ratio of grain boundary tension to free surface tension. Alexander, Kuczynski, and Dawson in studying the creep of gold wire in vacuum were unable to obtain reproducible values of the surface tension of gold. In plotting stress vs. strain for progressively longer times, they found that the stress at zero strain drifted with time from positive stress values to negative values. Similarly, for the surface tension of silver, reproducible values were obtained only when a purified helium atmosphere was substituted.' Evidently the evaporation rate of silver in vacuum is too high at the temperatures employed to obtain solid-gas equilibrium even in a similar metal enclosure. Thus reproducibility of results is lost. Experimental Procedure The experimental procedure was much the same as that originally developed by Udin, Shaler, and Wulff with a few modifications and improvements. For greater accuracy in strain measurements, knots gave way to cut gage marks as shown in Fig. 1. These were made with a hand-driven lathe in which razor blades serv'ed as cutting tools. Also a more precise cathetometer with a screw accurate to 0.00015 cm was used. The tests were conducted in an atmosphere of purified .helium rather than in vacuum in order to avoid possible evaporation difficulties. Five mil wire of high purity gold (99.98 pct) was used. After cutting in the gage marks, each wire of a series of about 12 was differently loaded by welding a gold ball to one end. This was done by dipping the end of the wire in a cooling gold droplet, previously melted on a charcoal block with a No. 2 acetylene torch. The other end of the wire was strung through a hole in a gold lid and twisted over the edge to hold the wires fixed and in suspension from the lid. The lid and mounted wires were then dipped in pure ethyl alcohol to dissolve any skin oils and dirt on the surface of the wires due to handling. Finally the lid was put in place on an alundum crucible lined with gold so that the wires hung freely within the gold-lined chamber. This whole assembly was next heated in a quartz nichrome wound tube furnace and heated for a few minutes at 600°C to soften the wires. After this anneal the wires were easily straightened with tweezers. The wire assembly was finally annealed 10" to 25°C above the subsequent test temperature for 2 hr. This treatment allowed the grains to grow to equilibrium size and shape. After the anneal, the lid was mounted in front of the cathetometer. The gage length was measured by sighting the 40 power microscope on the upper lip of the lower gage mark for the first reading, then traveling up to the lower lip of the upper gage mark for the final reading. This procedure was repeated four times to give an average gage length value. In this manner the annealed gage length and the final gage length could be measured to determine the strains. During all measurements, grain counts were made.

The purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the importance and the usefulness of phase measurements in electrical prospecting for ore, a subject about which virtually nothing has been published. The paper describes a new field method for ore prospecting, the "Turam" method, which makes use of phase measurements, and which has been used with great success for five years. Of the principal geophysical prospecting methods, the gravimetric and magnetic methods determine the direction and strength of the static fields of force of the earth. By seismic and electrical methods, fields of force are applied to the block of ground under investigation. By these methods a third parameter can be measured, besides the direction and strength of the field; namely, the time of arrival of the applied field at the different observation points. This time of arrival has been practically the only parameter measured in seismic work, while in electrical prospecting it has generally not been considered, the measurements having been limited to determination of direction and strength of the applied field. Phase Measurements In the most widely used of the electrical prospecting methods, those using alternating current, the time of arrival of the "electrical vibration" at the different observation points can be carried out as phase measurements. The phase angle measured then expresses, in part of one "vibration," or one cycle, how much the electrical vibrations at the observation point are out of step with those close to the source of the field. A phase lag of 45", for instance, means that the alternating field in the observation point is one-eighth of one complete " vibration," or cycle, out of step behind the field at the source. If the frequency is, say, 500 cycles per second, a frequency often used in electrical prospecting, a phase lag of 45' then means that the time required for the field of force to travel from the source to the observation point is 1/8 ' /500 = 1/4000 sec. Since the phase angle can be measured with an accuracy of a fraction, say one-tenth, of a degree, and the frequency can be considerably higher than 500, it is readily seen that the time of arrival can in this way be measured

(Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) THE deposit of rock salt along the shores of Lake Huron, in Canada, has been brought before the public during the last six months, in consequence of the developments made by the diamond drill at Goderich. It is likely to be of more than common interest in the future, since now actual operations have been commenced to exploit the deposit and work it by regular mining. The methods of mining rock salt being but little known in this country, it may be of interest to make a few general remarks in regard to them before entering, upon the description of this new mining enterprise. According to the conditions under which salt is found in nature, various methods have been resorted to, in course of time, to make it available for the human race. They consist in : A. Natural or solar evaporation. B. Artificial evaporation, either exclusively or in connection with the former. C. Mining the rock salt in its natural state, and converting it to a marketable product, if need be, by simply pulverizing it. Without going into the details of the various methods of making salt available in an economical point of view, dependent on its degree of purity, or on various local influences, we cannot refrain from. alluding to the general principles which influence the mining and manufacturing of salt in countries where they have been carried on for hundreds of years. ECONOMICAL CONDITIONS FOR SUCCESS. Salt being one of the articles of prime necessity, and one universally distributed throughout nature, it must always be sold at a comparatively low price. It would even be quoted in the market at prices far below those now ruling, if it were not for the high duties generally imposed upon it, for purposes of state revenues. But looking closer into the subject, it will be found that this duty is probably one of the least oppressive, although in some countries it exceeds sixfold the cost of profitable production. The following is not offered as an extended paper on the subject of shaft sinking, but more as a description of the present practice of shaft sinking in the Butte district. The Anaconda company is sinking at present the following shafts: Badger State, Moose, Mountain Consolidated, Mountain View, Pennsylvania and Tropic. At the High Ore and Leonard mines the shafts are being deepened by sinking two compartments and will subsequently be enlarged to the full working size by raising alongside the compartments which are now being sunk. The following other companies are also sinking shafts: Butte-Alex Scott, Butte and Zenith City, Boston and Corbin, North Butte Mining Co. (at the Granite Mountain shaft), East Butte Co. (at the Pittsmont shaft), and the Rainbow Lode Development Co. Shaft Timbering. The shafts of the Butte district, generally speaking, are of three compartments arranged in a straight line, and the pump compartment is usually arranged for the use of an auxiliary hoisting cage, as well as for carrying pipe lines and electric wires. The Rainbow shaft is practically square, and of three compartments. The length of the shafts outside of timber will vary from 17 to 22 ft., and the width from 6 ft. 6 in. to 7 ft. Fir timber is used in all shaft work. This may be obtained from the Coast, when it is known as Coast fir, or from Idaho or Montana, when it is known as native fir. The native fir seems to be the tougher wood, but it is hard to obtain clear lumber in the lengths and sizes necessary for shaft work. Some of the shaft timber of the Anaconda company has been treated with creosote as a preservative, but this practice has not come into general use, as the ground of the camp is so heavy that the timbers usually crush before they rot. The size of timber most used for shaft work is 12 by 12 in., while 10 by 12 in., 10 by 14 in. and 12 by 14 in. are used for some of the special pieces around the shaft. The new Leonard shaft is timbered with 14 by 14 in. wall plates throughout.

The production of crude oil in the United States is exceeding consumption by one-quarter million barrels per day and, with the possibilities of West Texas, this condition of overproduction, unless controlled, is likely to continue for some time. The resulting low price of oil has caused the operator to observe closely his lease operating costs. The installation of more efficient and reliable machinery has followed and it can well be said that the art of producing oil is on the threshold of a new era. In this advancement electricity has played a leading part. This paper covers only the problem of electricity as applied to lease operation and does not consider other phases of the industry, such as drilling and pipe-line pumping, in which electric power has been utilized economically. In considering electrification of pumping wells, the first question the operator asks is whether or not his costs will be reduced and the second question is whether or not the production will be increased. The third question, although in effect it is closely allied to the first, is the cost of power. The last question can be answered only after a thorough analysis of operating conditions and a study of the power rates prevailing in the particular field under consideration. Within the past few years, the power companies have realized the desirability of a steady 24-hr, pumping load, have made their rates for oil-field service particularly attractive, and in general have shown splendid cooperation in assisting the oil companies in the satisfactory application of electric power to their leases. When everything is taken into consideration, the first cost is practically the same for electric drive as for gas engines when pumping on the beam with individual motors. This cost, at prevailing prices, should aver-age approximately $2200 to $2400 per installation when using 15 to 35-hp., two-speed pumping equipment, including motor and control, countershaft, motor house, belt, installation charges, and a prorated portion of the cost of transmission lines and transformers for serving a number of wells. Since there is practically no difference in the cost of the two installations, it is evident that electricity, to justify its consideration, must have a lower operating cost or produce more oil.

An error occurred in the preparation of Fig. 3, p. 249, of Basic Statistical Measures Used in Geo-chemical Investigations of Colorado Plateau Uranium Deposits. This figure shows the relation of the arithmetic mean: geometric mean ratio to the geometric deviation. Curves for the cases where n, the number of samples, is 100, 10, and 5 are too high with respect to the ordinate. The error is negligible at low geometric deviations, but becomes increasingly greater wi,th higher values of geometric deviation. Arithmetric mean values in Table I1 are not effected by the errors in Fig. 3. The authors will endeavor to supply copies of the revised curves on request; write to: A. T. WITHIN the past few years, considerable development has been made in the coal-mining industry in Illinois and Indiana and it is the purpose of the authors to record its most important phases. Perhaps the two most striking features are the entry into the producing fields of certain large consumers of coal and the magnitude of some of the new operations. Mines are now being equipped by the. Chicago & Northwestern R. R., the Chicago,. Burlington & Quincy R. R., the Standard Oil Co., of Indiana, and the Union Electric Light & Power Co. of St. Louis. Besides, the U. S. Steel Corpn. has increased its coal-mining activities by commencing operations on its large holdings northeast of Benton, Franklin Co., Ill. Until recent years, the supply of coal has commonly been adequate and prices have generally been favorable, especially to large consumers, as the magnitude of their purchases enabled them to obtain satisfactory quotations from producers. In fact, most consumers of coal have believed that they could buy their fuel more satisfactorily in the open market than they could produce it themselves. The entry of the United States into the war was accompanied by various disarrangements of industrial conditions, and a demand for coal in excess of the supply seemed likely to be experienced for an indefinite period. Under these circumstances it seemed that the greatest assurance of a supply of fuel was its production by the operation of mines. In the case of the Chicago & Northwestern R. R. and the U. S. Steel Corpn. the production of coal has been carried on for many years with satisfactory results, but the C. B. & Q. R. R., the Union Electric Light & Power Co. and the Standard Oil Co. of Indiana had not been producers of coal, at least in this district. Apparently the most impressive feature of the newest mines is their capacity, for in some cases it is planned that production shall be in the neighborhood of 1000 tons per hr. In my paper on " End-Lines and Side-Lines in the Mining Law," read at the New York meeting of February, 1889 (Trans., xvii., 787), I discussed certain points involving the rights of a locator, B, who had located and surveyed a piece of ground, X + Y, of which only Y was properly subject to location, X being already held by another claimant, and had applied for and received a patent, granting X + Y, " excepting and excluding X." The paper concluded with the following questions : " Is there any difference in effect between the grant to him of Y simply and the grant of X + Y, ' excepting and excluding X' ? Why should any mining locator stake out his boundaries upon another location, and thus appear to assert a claim which he immediately withdraws? What is the legal force of such boundaries, established upon the land of another?" After calling attention to the fact that the entrance upon another's land for such a purpose is a trespass, and the principle that no trespasser can create by his trespass any right which he would not have without it, I reserved to another occasion a review of the history of the absurd practice of imaginary boundaries for mining claims, and a discussion of their legal effect. This practice is founded, of course, in the regulations and decisions of the United States General Land Office. There is nothing in the Revised Statutes which hints at it. On the contrary, the terms of Section 2322, giving to a locator " the exclusive right of possession and enjoyment" of the surface of his claim, seems clearly to forbid the use of that surface for the boundary-stakes of another locator. But the Act of 1866, though it provided for the issue of patents upon payment to the Government of so much per acre, and really by implication (as I have always believed) involved the absolute grant of the surface, was not so construed by the courts generally, or by the Land Office. Refractory materials play much the same part in the producion of metals as houses and shelter for men, and it therefore seems useful to discuss sometimes the ways of manufacturing them. In fact, it appears to me that too little has been said on this important matter, probably because the manufacturers of fire-brick do not care to publish details for the benefit of competitors, but perhaps, also, by reason of the indulgent indifference of consumers. Judging from the revolutions in the manafacture of iron and steel caused by using calcareous materials for the furnace-bottoms, it does not seem improbable that in the future basic bricks may be produced suffciently strong for building also side-walls and arches, and perhaps, also, for use in blast-furnaces. But the existence of the present difficulties of great shrinkage in burning and small strength against compression, which limit the possibility of using basic bricks to Bessemer converters and such open-hearth furnaces as permit the bottom to be separated from the superstructure, seems to indicate still a long and extensive use of silica fire-bricks. I am not prepared to say anything about American fire-brick making, but knowing that industries abroad are watched with increasing interest by American manufacturers, I have imagined that this association would like to hear some facts about the way firebricks arc made in my country—Sweden. Well-known as it is that Sweden produces a high quality of iron, it is perhaps not so universally known that the same country produces a very high grade of silica fire-brick, whereby most of its own wants are supplied. In giving the following sketch I can, of course, not claim that all the facts are entirely new, but shall consider my object attained if American manufacturers can derive some benefit from the comparison of the following methods with their own, and if some discussion on this important subject can be aroused which will contribute to further progress. Among the names which won a world-wide fame during the golden age of the early fifties, Bendigo and Ballarat were to Australia, what the Yuba and Grass Valley were to California. The map of Victoria did not for a long time show the name of old Bendigo;* for this first and more distinctive name was replaced with the more English Sandhurst, just as the alluvial diggings gave place to quartz mining. Towards the close of last pear, steps were taken to give back the old name, as associated with the early days of rich alluvium, and more suggestive than the application taken secondhand from an English military academy. History. The first discovery of gold? in this district, was made in the autumn of 1851 ; but there has never been any certainty as to the day or the man. At that time the country around Bendigo Creek was a part of the Ravenswootl sheep-run, and its resemblance to the Forest Creek district (now Castlemaine), induced the first prospecting. It was late in November when the "rush" broke out; the shepherds left their flocks; the sylvan solitudes were disturbed by * The name of Bendigo is said to have been derived from a hut-keeper on the Ravenswood sheep-run, who on account of his fondness for " fisticuffs " was nicknamed Bendigo, after the prize-fighter of that name. It is not aboriginal, as is often supposed, but Spanish ; and equivalent to our Benedict. There must always be some confusion between the two names of Sandhurst and Bendigo; the town, and with it the gold-field, having been three tinies named. Several other old familiar names have been likewise unfortunately replaced by second-hand English ones; so that an old digger talks of Forest Creek when he means the modern Castlemaine, Mt. Ida for Heathcote, Growler's Creek for Bright, etc. I shall use the names Sandhurst and Bendigo interchangeably. The first discovery of gold in Australia, was made by E. H.Hargraves, February 12, 1851, near Bathurst in New South Wales. In August of the same year the discovery at Buninyong, near Ballarat, inaugurated the first of a series of rushes to the Victoria gold-fields.
