THE purposes of this paper are (1) to show that the mineral matter content of coal is satisfactorily represented by the Parr formula; that is, Mineral matter = 1.08 Ash + 0.55 Total sulfur (2) to compare ash-to-mineral-matter ratios with factors by which ash values must be multiplied in order that dry, factor-times-ash-free values shall equal Parr unit coal values; (3) to examine such ash-correction factors and to compare them with similar factors corresponding to certain simplifications or modifications of the Parr formulas and (4) to show that ash-correction factors used for simplification in calculating approximate unit coal calorific values cannot be. correctly used for the conversion of other determined values in an analysis to the unit coal basis, but that each type of calculation requires separate treatment in simplification.

Southwestern Utah is well known for its scenic attractions. The beauties of Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon and the Grand Canyon are of world renown. Thusly, Cedar City is known, at least by the local Chamber of Commerce, as the Gateway to the Utah Parks. However, of the thousands of tourists flocking to Utah's many points of interest by way of Cedar City, few realize that any mining takes place in the vicinity, in spite of the fact that iron mines have been in continuous operation for 40 years. The Pinto-Iron Springs Mining District is only 15 miles west of Cedar City, and is the largest iron ore producing district in the West. In recent years, the shipments have ranged from 2% to 4 million tons per year making Utah the fifth-ranking state in iron ore production.

Numerous articles have appeared in the literature citing the application of the potentiometric analyzer to cycling operations. Specific information obtainable by a potentiometric analysis, as noted by various investigators, includes: 1. Pattern sweep efficiency for various injection and production rate programs. 2. Injected fluid breakthrough time at production wells. 3. Optimum production and injection rates. 4. Prediction of injection and/or production well locations. 5. History of advance of the in-jected-produced fluid interface. 6. Ultimate life of the reservoir. 7. Ultimate reservoir production. This note describes a procedure for predicting pressure distribution in a gas-condensate reservoir by using the potentiometric analyzer to obtain potential distribution data on an analog model of the reservoir and then applying Muskat's' equations. The method relates the volumetric weighted average datum pressure to the mean potential in the model.

An economic appraisal of the western phosphate industrial potentials made between 1945 and 1948 revealed possibilities for a considerable expansion in the production of high analysis phosphate fertilizer. The most significant facts are: (1) a rapidly increasing and a much larger potential market which might be reached from the western deposits, (2) the existence of large undeveloped deposits of phosphate rock, (3) potential energy from sulphuric acid, coal, or hydroelectric power in the general vicinity of the deposits. The challenge to the mining and metallurgical engineering profession is in the economical development of phosphate mines and in improving processes for utilization of the western ores and the recovery of byproducts to make the expanded western industry satisfactorily compete with the industry in the East and South in meeting the fertilizer needs of the Midwest and Far West.

The Ten Section field is approximately 10 miles southwest of Bakers-field, Kern County, Calif. (Fig. 1). There is no surface evidence of the existence of the Ten Section structure, which subsurface exploration has shown to be a gently folded, anticlinal dome. Regionally, this field occurs as a fold in the deeper beds of the gently rolling floor of the San Joaquin Valley. It is on the easterly slope of the valley, its position with relation to the axis of this syncline not having been determined. The study of the mechanical properties of geologic materials was initiated in the Mining Research Section of the Fuels and Mining Practice Division in 1951 as part of a fundamental study of ground stress in Canadian coal mines.1 Early in the investigation of the mechanical properties of geologic materials, however, it was realized that the test results are influenced by the rate and the duration of loading. For this reason, laboratory investigations2,3 were undertaken to study the effect of long-period uniaxial stress on the deformation and failure properties of these materials. A literature survey indicated that work on the time-dependent properties of geologic materials had been very limited in the past.

The bad effects of arsenic in commercial copper are well-known to metallurgists. The refining of copper by electrolysis eliminates practically all of the arsenic, provided certain requirements are fulfilled. The first, and most important, of these requirements is, that the voltage of the depositing current shall not be too high. It has been known for some time that the percentage of arsenic in the deposited copper increases with the voltage. To investigate the relation between the electro-motive force (e.m.f.) and the freedom of the precipitated copper from arsenic, the experiments were made, of which a brief summary is here given: I made three copper-arsenic alloys, containing respectively 3.56, 2.24 and 0.96 per cent. of arsenic. LAVES and Wallbaum' reported that the phases occurring at the compositions TiFe, TiRu, and TiOs, which are stable over a wide range of temperatures and are separated from neighboring phases by wide two phase fields, have a CsC1-type ordered structure. For TiRu and TiOs, this was recently confirmed by C. B. Jordan.2 Recent results of Greenfield and Beck3 show that solid solutions with ruthenium of the body-centered-cubic elements vanadium and tantalum (and presumably also of colum-bium) in group Va of the periodic table undergo CsC1-type ordering. Although detailed phase diagrams for these systems are not yet available, it would appear that these ordered structures are separated from the neighboring body-centered-cubic solid solutions by relatively narrow two phase fields.

Since April, 1962, Shell Oil Co. has operated a peripheral line-drive waterflood of the 10.750-ft lower Tuscaloosa (Cretaceous) Denkman sand in the Little Creek field. Located in southwestern Mississippi in the lower Tuscaloosa trend, the field was discovered by Shell in Jan., 1958. Among the largest in the trend, the accumulation is controlled stratigraphically and occurs in an extensive series of alluvial-point bar deposits across a nose that dips gently to the south. The crude oil is 39" API gravity and was highly undersaturated at initial conditions. Early production behavior indicated a depletion drive with slight water influx; primary recovery wm estimated to be 25 million bbl, or 24.5 percent of stock-tank oil originally in place. A.s a result of a favorable mobility ratio and remarkably uniform rock properties, the volumetric sweep eficiency in the waterflood has exceeded 90 percent. Despite the high connate water saturation (56 percent), the displacement efficiency by water injection has been quite efficient, contrary to traditional concepts. Based on observed field flood-out performance, ultimate recovery is calculated to be 46 million bbl. As anticipated, the production rate began declining during 1964 due to a continu ing reducrion in the number of producing wells as flood fronts advanced across the field. Cumulative recovery as of Jan., 1968, was 44.8 million bbl; waterflood operations ~hould be complete by 1970. Introduction Most waterfloods described in reservoir engineering literature involve pattern operations, the most common of which is the five-spot pattern. Only occasiona'lly are linear drives described, even though there probably are increasing numbers being put into operation. Increasing use of linear floods may reflect the accelerating trend towards early application of fluid-injection programs when linear drives are more efficient, as was the case at Little Creek. However. the Little Creek operation is unusual in several respects. It is one of a few successful waterfloods conducted in sands with connate water saturations approaching 60 percent, and it is among the deepest successful water-floods being operated anywhere. Development The Little Creek field was discovered in Jan., 1958, in the lower Tuscaloosa trend in southwestern Mississippi (Fig. 1). The discovery well, Shell-Lemann No. 1, was drilled on a seismic closure about 2 miles southeast of lower Tuscaloosa production at Sweetwater. The well was completed in the Denkman sand at 10,752 ft, and on initial potential it flowed 588 BOPD of 39" API crude on a %+-in. choke; psi was 730 and GOR was 442:l. Development proceeded rapidly on 40-acre spacing, and by the end of 1958 the field was producing approximately 9,100 B/D from 56 wells. Almost all this production came from the northern half of the field. The southern part was discovered in Nov., 1958, at a location almost 2 miles from previously established production. Subsequent drilling established an apparent conneotion about half a mile wide between the twd areas. Development of the field was practically complete by 1961 with the drilling of 155 producers and 35 dry holes. Some early wells were completed open hole but moslt are completed with casing cemented through the productive interval and perforated for production. Geology The lower Tuscaloosa structure in this area is a north-south nose with maximum dips of about 2" on the flanks. There is no discernible faulting at the producing horizon. Productive limits of the field are shown in Fig. 2, which is contoured on a marker just above the main productive zone. A common water level at 10,415 ft subsea was logged at both the northwest and southeast ends of the field. There is a gross oil column of nearly 100 ft (Fig. 2). Since there is less than 40 ft of closure, it is apparent that bhe accumubtion is controlled stratigraphically, being limited by a sand pinch-out across the creslt of the nose. The total produc-

Selective oxidation (preferential oxidation of a single alloy component) can be an important oxidation mode in the case of alloys such as Si-Fe, Al-Fe, and so on, when heat-treating in atmospheres of low oxygen potential. It was the purpose of this work to identify the oxide films formed on iron containing 31/4 pct Si at low oxygen potentials, and to make some observations on the H2O/H2 ratios required to form them. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD HYDROGEN of varying water content offers a very convenient method of establishing a wide range of oxidizing power, or oxygen potential. The method chosen to provide a desired H2O/H2 ratio was to nearly saturate hydrogen at room temperature by bubbling the gas through water at room temperature, and then to wring out the excess water by passing the wet gas through a long glass spiral immersed in a refrigerated liquid at a desired dew point. After oxidation, the samples were examined by electron diffraction in order to identify any film which might be present. PREPARATION AND TREATMENT OF SAMPLES The samples were prepared from a Si-Fe alloy made in the laboratory using electrolytic iron and 96 pct ferro-silico11, vacuum-induction melted, hot-rolled then cold-rolled to 0.015-in. thickness. After the cold-rolling the samples were annealed at 1000°C. Transmission Laue X-ray patterns showed very little evidence of preferred orientation, but it is likely that a weak texture could have escaped notice. The chemical analysis was as follows: 3.34 Si, 0.01 Al, 0.001 0, 0.006 C, 0.002 N. Before each sample was oxidized, it was polished through 4/0 emery paper, cleaned and dried using benzene, carbon tetrachloride, acetone, absolute alcohol, and ether. The method of oxidizing the samples was as follows: Samples about 1/2 by 1 by 0.015 in. were held in the upper, cool part of a vertical vacuum furnace until the desired temperature was established in the furnace, Fig. 1. The sample was then lowered into the uniform hot zone where it was heated quickly to the desired temperature, and subjected to hydrogen of controlled moisture content (dew point) as mentioned previously. Temperatures from 400" to 1000°C were used, and dew points from room temperature to —78°C were explored. In general, the runs lasted about 6 hr, but a few runs were of different duration, as will be indicated later. After the predetermined period of time had elapsed, the specimens were withdrawn by the hollow stainless steel-quartz holder to a cool zone at the top of the furnace. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The results are summarized in Table I. Most of the electron-diffraction patterns were obtained by glancing-angle reflection, but in a few cases it was possible to strip the oxide films from the surface by a total immersion in a 3 pct bromine-methanol solution. Some of the thinner stripped films yielded quite satisfactory transmission patterns. However, both diffraction techniques yielded the same results; the patterns while most frequently showing a (low) tridymite, also showed a (low) cristobalite in some cases. A few patterns showed evidence of both phases. Because of the known nonequilibrium behavior of silica, it is not surprising that both forms of silica could coexist on one sample. It was noted that at fairly low dew points such as —40°C, there was a tendency for diffuse diffraction rings, suggesting a very small crystallite size. Also some subsequent experiments to be reported later show that thin silica films can be amorphous.

CONSIDERABLE deep hole prospect drilling has been done in the last few years in the Globe-Miami mining district about 70 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona, and in the San Manuel-Tiger area about 50 miles south of the Globe-Miami region. More than 205,000 ft of churn drilling have been completed by the San Manuel Copper Corp. at their property in the Old Hat Mining District in southern Pinal County. The deepest hole on this property is 2850 ft; there are 49 holes deeper than 2000 ft. At the adjoining Houghton property of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., where only one hole reached 2000-ft depth, there were 27,472 ft of churn drilling and 3436 ft of diamond drilling. Three churn drill holes were deepened by diamond drilling methods. Near Miami in the Globe-Miami district the Amico Mining Corp. drilled four holes by combined churn and rotary drilling methods, the total amounting to 13,879 ft, of which 2256 ft were drilled with a portable rotary rig. In the same district, besides doing a large amount of shallow prospect drilling, the Miami Copper Co. drilled two holes of 2560 and 3787 ft, respectively, which were completed by churn drilling methods. The rocks encountered in drilling at San Manuel and Tiger are described by Steele and Rubly in their paper on the San Manuel Prospect' and by Chapman in a report on the San Manuel Copper Deposit.' The rocks are well-consolidated Gila conglomerate, quartz monzonite, and monzonite porphyry. In some places these formations stand very well while being drilled, and three holes were drilled without casing, the deepest of which was 2200 ft. In other holes faulted and fractured ground made drilling difficult. In the Globe-Miami district the deep drilling was done in the down-faulted block of Gila conglomerate east of the Miami fault and in the underlying Pinal schist. The geology of this area is described by Ranaome. In the Amico holes the conglomerate varied from material consisting entirely of granite boulders and fragments to a rock made up of schist fragments in a sandy matrix; in the Miami Copper Co. holes there were more granite boulders and the material was poorly consolidated. Drilling was much more difficult and expensive in the Miami area than in the San Manuel district, mainly because of the depth of the holes and the formations drilled. All the deep hole prospecting described in this paper was done with portable rigs. The churn drill rigs were of several types, of which the Bucyrus-Erie were the most popular. Bucyrus-Erie 28L, 29W, and 36L rigs were used on some of the deeper holes on the San Manuel property. A few Fort Worth spudder types were tried, and the deepest hole at San Manuel was drilled with a Fort Worth Jumbo H. The spudder type is considerably larger than most other rigs used on this work and required a larger location site. The spudders were belt-driven machines with separate power units, and time required for setting up and moving was much longer than with the more portable drills. All the churn drilling was done by contractors or with machinery leased from them. A few of the contractors had complete equipment, including most of the necessary fishing tools. Unusual and special fishing tools were obtainable from the supply companies in the oil fields of New Mexico or in the Los Angeles area. Most of the contractors used equipment with standard API tool joints, so that much of it was interchangeable. Failure of tool joints is one of the principal causes of fishing jobs. It can be minimized if the joints are kept to the API specifications and the proper sized joints are used in the various holes. The minimum sizes that should be used with various bits are as follows: 12-in. and larger bits, 4x5-in. tool joints; 10-in. bits, 3Y4x41/4-in. tool joints; 8-in. bits, 23/4x 3 3/4-in. tool joints; 6-in. bits, 21/4x31/4-in. tool joints; 4-in. bits, 15/ix25/s-in. tool joints. Two rotary drill rigs were tried at San Manuel on the same hole, and a portable rotary drill rig was used on the Amico drilling for test coring the formation and for drilling in holes 3 and 4. Rotary drilling differs from churn drilling or cable tool drilling in that the bit is revolved by a string of drill pipe and the cuttings are removed from the hole by a thin solution of mud pumped through the drill pipe. The principal parts of a rotary rig are the power unit, a rotating table to revolve the drill pipe, hoists to raise and lower the pipe and to handle casing, and a pumping system to circulate the drilling liquid. The rig used on the Amico property at Miami was mounted on a truck. The larger rig used on the San Manuel property was hauled by several trucks and had separate turntable and pumping units. Diamond drill coring equipment was used successfully with the rotary rig in the holes on the Amico property. To allow for 2-in. drill pipe with tool joints, 31/2-in. core barrels and bits were used. With the standard 31h-in. core barrel there was considerable difficulty in maintaining circulation with mud, so a barrel was designed with a smaller inner tube and a broad-faced bit. This allowed coarser material to circulate between the barrels. Rock bits of 5 to 37/8 in. were used with the rotary rig for drilling between core runs. Diamond drill equipment is much lighter than churn drill tools, so that fishing tools can usually be obtained from supply houses by air express when needed. Three churn drill holes on the Houghton property at Tiger were deepened by diamond drilling with Longyear UG Straitline gasoline-driven machines. The open churn drill hole was cased with 21h-in. black pipe. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this section is to introduce the reader to the concepts of computer control of grinding circuits, and to flag some of the opportunities to be encountered, but without becoming overly involved in details of process, equipment or software. It is assumed that the reader has some familiarity with computer hardware and software, and in particular with the grinding process. The paper is organized into four parts: a general commentary of the need for computer control of grinding, a discussion of the process considerations involved, a more detailed elaboration on the current state of applicable computer technology, and a case study indicating one approach towards such a project. A brief installation survey and references for further reading are also given. This section will primarily deal with supervisory computer applications. Direct Digital Control and microprocessor systems are generally used as replacements for analog controls and thus are not considered in depth. Many configurations of grinding circuits exist, necessitating certain assumptions. Since many new concentrators use an open circuited SAG mill feeding a closed circuit ball mill, this configuration is used as a model although the principles stated can be extrapolated to any circuit. Motivation The use of computers for industrial control has been one of the dreams of control engineers and operators alike for many years. The concept of a plant running at optimal conditions with minimal operator involvement is very attractive from economic and technical standpoints. Accomplishment of this goal has been a long struggle, but today likelihood of success of such a project is very high, considering the reliability of modern hardware and the sophistication of available software. The primary motivation of any control system must be economic, i.e. it must pay for itself and make money for the owner, directly or indirectly. In grinding control the benefits which can be expected include: a) Higher through-put b) More uniform product in particle size, density and volumetric flog: c) Reduced operating costs including media consumption, power consumption and liner wear

Interest in the reserves of phosphate rock in the United States and their proper conservation has recently been aroused by hearings held in different parts of the country by the "Joint Committee to investigate the adequacy and use of phosphate resources of the United States." This committee was appointed within a few days after a Presidential message to Congress on the same subject, dated May 20, 1938, and began to function almost immediately. This information has provided an opportunity for new studies by official agencies, for a restatement of the reserves of Florida and Tennessee, and for some modification of figures for the Western States. The writer, representing the Federal Geological Survey, was given free access to the Florida material and has prepared for publication a report,² some features of which are summarized in this paper. The Tennessee material was studied by Dr. G. I. Whitlatch,³ of the Tennessee Division of Geology. Prof. J. Stewart Williams,* of the Utah State Agricultural College at Logan, has published a recent study of the phosphate resources of Utah and the writer has given some further study to reserves of western phosphate from the viewpoint of including material of lower grade than that hitherto considered. Y.:—I think Mr. Bache has put his finger on the chief source of the danger of dust-, or gas-and-dust, explosions in collieries. 1 mean the persistent determination of the miners' unions to increase their weekly wages by the excessive use of explosives. This would not be feasible if coal-miners were paid by the day; but this form of payment is, for many reasons, not economically practicable; and the universal practice is to pay for the winning of coal according to the quantity produced. If the miner, by using a large amount of powder, can throw down a large amount of coal without corresponding labor on his own part in undercutting and drilling, he will receive more money for less work, provided he is paid for everything—merchantable coal, worth-less dust, slate, and " bone "—resulting from such a method. My attention was called to this matter many years ago by an admirable report of Prof. W. B. Potter, a past- President of the Institute, on the conditions obtaining in this respect in the Illinois coal-field. It was made very clear in that report that considerations of danger to workmen or loyalty to employers could not be relied upon to prevent miners from employing this perilous and wasteful method of increasing their own immediate receipts. So far as I know, only three remedies have been attempted, namely: the enforcement of discipline as to the methods of mining; the refusal to pay for dust, etc., produced by the miners'methods; and restriction upon the use of explosives, effected by requiring the miner to purchase them from the employer, at a price so high as to make it unprofitable for him to use them in excess. All of these attempted remedies have encountered the bitter opposition of the miners' unions. The enforcement of discipline has become almost impossible, if discipline be (as it should be) understood to involve punishment for the violation of rules when no disaster has followed. I

THE rapidly increasing use of machinery for the mining of coal and operations incidental thereto has materially changed conditions from a safety standpoint. A few of the coal-producing states have recognized the need for specialized electrical equipment for use in mines and have introduced certain requirements in their State safety regulations, notably Pennsylvania. This paper discusses the principal problems involved in maintenance of such equipment. PERMISSIBLE: EQUIPMENT "Permissible" electrical equipment is equipment that has met certain prescribed standards for use in mines where hazardous conditions may occur and has been recommended by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Such machinery is available on the market for most coal-mining operations--for instance, coal cutting, transportation, drilling, loading, working-place illumination, shot-firing and pumping. A notable exception is the trolley-reel gathering locomotive which, although its parts may be explosion-tested by the Bureau, has not been approved as permissible for the following reasons: I. The trailing cable is subjected to more severe service than on other equipment. 2. State regulations do not require that a working place be examined for methane before a locomotive enters it. 3. Even with two-conductor cable, imperfect or inadequate bonding may cause the emission of sparks at the wheels of the locomotive and at rail joints. 4. As the locomotive is equipped with a trolley pole, and as the trolley wire may be installed and used in unsafe territory in spite of rigid State regulations, a trolley-reel gathering locomotive is always a potential hazard. MAINTENANCE The proper procedure for maintenance of permissible equipment may be divided into three parts: (I) inspection, (2) actual maintenance and (3) changes or improvements to existing machines. To secure the fullest benefits through the use of permissible equipment it is necessary that all men involved understand the principles underlying the safety features of this equipment and realize the significance of defects, so that neglect and indifference in the maintenance thereof may be eliminated. Inspection From the standpoint of safety it is desirable no doubt to make a suitable inspection of permissible electrical equipment once a week, but the opening of every enclosed compartment at each inspection may do more harm than good. The openings to such compartments are closed with various types of covers very accurately machined, often made of the softer alloys to reduce weight, and fastened with a multitude of bolts, screws, washers, and other small parts. Frequent handling of these covers may cause sufficient damage to defeat their original purpose and intent.

We have already devoted two previous memoirs to this question. In the firstL we collated and discussed the existing literature on the subject; in the second: we described the crystalline forms obtained by the reduction, at different temperatures, of ferrous chloride by hydrogen or by zinc-vapor. The conclusion from these researches was that the three allo-tropic states of iron—a, stable below A2; , stable between A2 and A3; and , stable above A3—all crystallize in the cubic system. The differences observed were such as are customarily encountered in the crystallographic records of many minerals of which allotropic varieties or isomerides are not known, and did not conform to the ordinary definition of polymorphism. It is, however, improbable that allotropic transformations, which are placed beyond doubt by a series of positive facts, do not involve some changes in the intimate structure. As a matter of fact, the crystals we did obtain were too small to allow of a precise examination, and this might introduce an element of uncertainty in the firm establishment of our conclusions. Professor H. Le Chatelier mas even led to think from some of our results that r-iron could very well be a rhom-bohedron simulating a cube, and not a true cube, and it will be remembered that the crystalline form of bismuth was for a long time incorrectly regarded as cubic.
