The custom milling plant of the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co. is at Sahuarita, Arizona, approximately 20 miles south of Tucson. It is connected by a 2-mile railroad spur to the main line of the Southern Pacific Railroad between Tucson and Nogales. The capacity of the plant is 500 tons per day. The mill is conventional except perhaps in the rather wide variety of ores treated. These vary from straight copper ores, from which only one concentrate is produced, and lead-zinc or copper-zinc ores from which two concentrates are produced, to complex gold-silver-copper-lead-zinc ores, which require the simultaneous production of three or lour concentrates. Custom ores are received in lots varying in size from a few truckloads to several carloads. Similar ores, after crushing and sampling, may be commingled, or individual lots may be milled individually. The ores are first dumped either into one of two 200-ton railroad bins, or into one of the two 75-ton truck bins. From these bins the lot of ore is individually crushed in a 24 by 16-in. jaw crusher to 3-in. size, and then to ½-in. size in a 3-ft Symons shorthead crusher. After crushing to ½-in., the ore is conveyed to the automatic sampling plant. This consists of three Vezin samplers in series, each successively cutting out 10 pct, 10 pct and 5 pct of its feed. After No. I sampler, the material passes through a mixing barrel and is then crushed to -in. in a set of rolls before passing to No. 2 sampler. Between No. 2 and No. 3 samplers, the ore is again mixed in a mixing barrel. The final sample, consisting of one pound per ton of ore, is taken to the laboratory, where it is further crushed to 1/8-in. in a coffeemill, and then riffled down to the size required for grinding in a pulverizer. The capacity of the crushing and sampling plant is up to 100 tons per hour, depending upon the character of the ore. After sampling, the ore is stored in five ore-storage bins, consisting of four 200-ton bins and one 175-ton bin. Each of these bins is discharged by means of belt feeders and conveyor to the ball mills, so that ores may be composited for milling in any required ratio, or milled separately by themselves. Fine grinding is done in one 6 by 4-ft Allis-Chalmers ball mill and one 8-ft by 36-in. Hardinge mill. These two mills both discharge to one 54-in. Akins Simplex High weir classifier. The classifier sands can be returned to either or both mills, so that flexibility in grinding for different ores is easily obtained. Flotation equipment consists of four 66-in. Fagergren machines for copper-lead roughing and six similar machines for zinc roughing. Lead-copper bulk concentrate is cleaned and recleaned in eight No. 18-S Denver machines, and zinc concentrate is cleaned in three 66-in. Fager-grens. Copper-lead differential separation

Recent work by the authors1 on the oxide films formed on alloys of titanium and zirconium with nickel and copper indicated that an investigation of the oxides which form on alloys of copper and nickel might permit the relative rates of formation and diffusion of the ions of these metals to be determined. This binary system is of further interest since the alloys which form are of the solid solution type over the entire range. In addition nickel is much more oxidation resistant than copper. A comparison of the free energies of formation of the simple oxides which may occur on these alloys indicates that nickel oxide should be observed over the entire time and temperature ranges of oxidation for all alloy compositions~i In order for nickel oxide to predominate on the surface, it is necessary that nickel ions form and diffuse to the surface. Two factors which may influence the formation of nickel oxide may be the ionic sizes, where cu+ is o.,,6-,4 and ~i++ is o.,oh;, and the charges on the ions. On the basis of size, Ni++ should diffuse more readily than Cu+ while on the basis of charge, Cu+ should form more readily than Ni++. According to Uhlig2 passivity to corrosion in an alloy appears at a critical composition which for copper-nickel alloys is related to the tendency of the d band of electronic energy states to fill with elec-trans. This in in the copper- nickel alloys corresponds to 40 at. pct nickel at which composition Uhlig2 (quoting La Que's data) states that the alloy system becomes passive. Magnetic and specific heat data indicate that the d band of copper-nickel alloys is flied at 60 at. Pet Or or 4O at. pct nickel. Matt and Jones3 have shown that if, on alloying nickel with copper, one considers a copper atom to be identical with a nickel atom except for an extra electron (nickel has the configuration: 3ds 4s2 and copper: 3 dl0 4s) then at 60 at. pct copper or 40 at. pct nickel enough electrons are contributed by copper to fill the d band of the alloy. At this composition the magnetic susceptibility approximates zero according to Grew.4 Although the electron diffraction data will not determine the rates of the several reactions which may occur during oxidation, yet a determination of the structures of the surface oxides may yield information concerning the relationships, if any, which may exist between the oxide structures which form and that composition where the magnetic susceptibility approximates zero. It is quite possible, of course, that the mechanisms of the oxidation and corrosion reactions may be so widely different that no correlations between them may be possible. Survey OF Literature The metals, copper and nickel, which are face-centered cubic, form solid solution alloys which are face-centered cubic with no superstructure for all compositions. IN previous studies on the effect of orientation on the rate of anodic oxidation of A1-3 pct Mg mono-crystals of high purity, certain anomalies were observed on the cold-worked metal. These anomalies were shown to correspond to regions of changed orientation within the grains resulting from plastic deformation.' In fact, they are deformation bands revealed by differences in rate of oxidation and produced by more or less continuous bending of the lattice about a [Ill] axis common to the original crystal and the band.2,3 Preliminary observations made after relatively large degrees of cold working revealed an approximate twin relationship between the bands and the surrounding crystal. Fig. 1 shows the etch figures formed on such a band and on the original monocrystal after a 67 pct rolling reduction. It is evidently not a true twinning, since there is a broad transition zone between the two systems, however the two extreme orientations are nearly in a twin relationship. It was decided to investigate these preliminary observations by progressive rolling-reductions on monocrystals of varied initial orientation. From these studies, which form the subject of the present article, it became apparent that the initial observation of an approximate twin relation between the bands and the monocrystal was simply a special case. Our experiments show that deformation in rolling proceeds by a mechanism analogous to those which have already been observed in the simpler cases of tension and compression. Micrography—in particular, the formation of etch figures—has been applied to the quantitative study of these orientations. In addition, observations have been made of slip lines, of thin oxide films yielding interference colors, of thick films in polarized light, and of etchants giving "engraving." These micrographic methods for studying orientation have established the orientation relationship without any ambiguity, whereas X-ray methods would have given only a statistical result because we were often dealing with thin bands (2 to 100 microns) and even narrower connecting zones covering a maximum of 20 microns. Specimen Preparation and Methods The Al-3 pct Mg alloy was prepared from 99.95 pct A1 and is of the type used industrially in France for brilliant anodized finishes under the name of Brillalumag. This material combines the normal commercial properties with an enduring brilliance due to the protection of a thick, but perfectly transparent, film of alumina.' The monocrystals were prepared by the method of critical deformation followed by prolonged annealing. Great care was taken to insure perfect homogeneity of composition, to eliminate included crystals,6,7 and to avoid the formation of undulations during oxidation. The critical deformation for this alloy is about 1.2 pct (1-l0/10x100) and the subsequent annealing was for one week at 500 °C after gradual increase of temperature (35°C per hr). The crystals thus prepared had a section of 10x5 mm and a length of 20 to 40 mm. Each of these crystals was polished electrolytically and etched for the formation of etch-figures with the classical reagent.' The orientation was then calculated from their angles, as measured with a goniometer microscope.

Laboratory relative permeability data on reservoir rock are obtained on samples which are not subjected to overburden pressure during the permeability measurements. These data are then used for calculating the performance characteristics of reservoirs in which the rock is under the pressure of the overburden. Recent observations have shown that the permeability and porosity of reservoir sandstones are decreased by application of overburden pressure. These observations led us to a study of the effect of overburden pressure on the relative permeability characteristics of sandstones. A previous note from this laboratory1 showed that overburden pressure, simulated by applying hydraulic pressure to the outside of a plastic mounted core. caused a reduction in permeability of the core by as much as 50 per cent at 10,000 psig. In a multiphase fluid flow system, the relative permeability at a given saturation will change if the permeability or the effective permeability changes but not if both permeability and effective permeability change by the same ratio. The tests described in this note were made to determine the effect of overburden pressure on permeability and effective gas permeability in the gas-oil system. The gas-oil system was chosen because the available equipment was best suited for studying this system. The resultant data can be applied to other systems of interest because the gas permeability in the gas-oil system is the permeability of the nonwetting phase and, as such, is equivalent to the gas permeability in the gas-oil-water system and to the oil permeability in the oil-water system. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Cylindrical test plugs, one in. in diameter and one in. long, were cut from sandstone core samples from three different reservoirs. After extraction in toluene, the plugs were mounted in Lucite by conventional core mounting methods.3 The core properties are given in the legend in Fig. 1. The mounted cores were machined to fit the apparatus shown in Fig 4. Air permeabilities as a function of overburden pressure were measured by connecting lines (1) and (2) to a conventional air permeameter. To measure porosity changes as a function of overburden pressure, the lines leading to (1) and (2) and the core were saturated with kerosene; line (1) was capped and a small bore precision calibrated pipet was connected to (2). Changes in pore volume of the core as overburden pressure was applied were noted by reading the amount of kerosene produced into the pipet. To correct for the change in volume of the lines inside the hydraulic cell as a function of pressure, a pressure-vs-volume run was made with a solid Lucite cylinder substituted for the core. The change in volume of the lines was about 10 per cent of the change in pore volume of the core. No correction was needed for the permeability measurements because there was no measurable pressure drop in the lines at the maximum overburden pressure. Relative gas permeabilities were measured by the stationary liquid method described by Osoba, et al.' Cyril Stanley Smith in his classic 1948 Institute of Metals Lecture&apos; noted in the case of annealing twins that: "It is well known that approximately the same number of twins per grain and the same general geometry are maintained in large grains as in small ones, a fact that certainly suggests a mechanism such as the above where boundaries and twins grow proportionately together. If this view is correct, a spherical grain should have no mechanism for keeping its twins." Such a constancy of twins per grain would be of particular interest as a tool for the study of the origin of annealing twins. It has been proposed by Mathewson2 and later by Barrett3 that in face-centered cubic metals slip occurs in the {111} Plane by <112> shears which combine in pairs to produce the macroscopically observed <110> movement. This proposal is schematically inviting since <112> slip permits the atoms of one plane to move along the interatomic valleys of its neighbor rather than up the hills across the atom sites. There is strong experimental evidence? that annealing twins result from the growth of nuclei in the form of "twin faults" produced by single <112> shears. It is possible that more twin faults would form at low deformation temperatures than at high ones, because the more rigid lattice may increase the tendency to "freeze" the twin faults and prevent their dissipation in slip. This is suggested by (1) the greater resistance to slip at low temperatures and (2) greater tendency toward mechanical type twinning at low temperatures (a summary of these factors is presented by Seigle and Brick5). These considerations would suggest the following: a. Constant twin/grain ratio for specimens deformed constant amounts at a constant temperature, but annealed at various temperatures above the recrystalliza-tion temperature. b. Larger twin/grain ratios for re-crystallized specimens previously deformed constant amounts at lower temperatures. The purpose of this investigation is to test these considerations. One half in. rods of phosphorous deoxidized electrolytic copper and 70-30 alpha brass (68.36 pct Cu, 0.005 pct Pb, 0.01 pct Fe, 31.62 pct Zn remainder) were rolled to a thickness of 0.350 in., milled to specimens 0.350 X 0.437 X 2 in., and annealed at 700°C to an average grain size of 0.065 and 0.090 mm, respectively. These specimens of each metal were then rolled 50 pct reduction in thickness and annealed one hour under conditions which were all combinations of the following: Rolling Annealing Temperatures. Temperatures. °C °C -70 400 25 500 200 600 Standard metallographic techniques&apos; were used to prepare specimens. By the method of lineal analysis7 using a minimum of ten samples of fifty grains each for each specimen, the ratios of twins* per total grains, twins per twinned grain, twin families* per total grains and twins per twin family were determined. Recrystallized grain size was determined by A.S.T.M. comparison methods.8 All observations were made on the rolling plane. The results are tabulated in Table 1.

It is pointed out that the application of capillary pressure curves obtained by drainage or desaturation processes to the calculation of the fluid distribution in interphase transition zones involves a number of difficulties; namely: (I) the development of very low nonwetting phase saturations appears to be in contradiction with the lack of mobility of such distributions indicated by permeability-saturation curves, (2) dispersed nonwetting phases are thermodynamically unstable, and (3) discontinuous phases should not be subject to hydrostatic equilibrium requirements. While these difficulties could be obviated by assuming that the capillary pressure drainage curve has an initial horizontal segment, they are automatically circumvented by application of the imbibition capillary pressure curve to the lower part of the water-oil transition zone. These generally show zero displacement pressure at only partial wetting-phase saturations. The countercurrent upward flow of oil into the main oil-saturated pay and downward drainage of water also suggests that wetting phase imbibition processes will control the saturation distribution immediately above the water-saturated section. Similar considerations, with a generalized interpretation of the apparent wetting-phase behavior of the oil and gas phases, provides a basis for constructing the curve for fluid distribution in the oil-gas transition zone. In the transition zones so derived, the oil begins with a nonvanishing saturation at the water-oil contact and terminates with a similar saturation at the top of the gas-oil contact. The gas-oil transition zone begins with an equivalent nonvanishing gas saturation. Introduction It has been a common assumption for some years that the nature of the fluid dis- tribution in virgin reservoirs, and in particular that in the transition zones between the oil and water and between the oil and gas sections, can be computed by a simple application of capillary pressure data. The results of such calculations appear to have been first reported by Leverett.&apos; The latter, however, indicated only the numerical values of the parameters used in the computations, without explicitly describing the procedure. Leverett&apos;s illustrative calculated transition zones are reproduced in Fig I. Although no critical study of the apparently obvious method of calculation has been published, one cannot proceed very far in the computation without encountering some rather fundamental questions not yet answered in the literature. This paper is not written under the pretense that the whole transition-zone problem has been fully and satisfactorily solved. Its purpose, rather, is to discuss suggestions for its treatment, much of it admittedly hypothetical, and emphasize the nature of the uncertainties arising therein; for the literature, as now available, gives little indication that there are any problems still outstanding. The Transition-zone Equation The basic equation, which presumably gives directly the fluid distribution without recourse to any further consideration, is: Ap = (r1 - r2)gh [1] where r1, y2 are the densities of the two contiguous fluids, h is the height above the "capillary-free" zone of complete saturation with fluid I, g the acceleration of gravity, and Ap is the capillary pressure across the average interface at the height

After eight years of testing and development, the E. J. Longyear Co. has adapted the wire- line core barrel to small diameter drillholes. Field performance indicates that the apparatus for the BX hole will be an important supplement to the conventional techniques used in the diamond core drilling industry. Higher core recovery, faster drilling progress, and reduced diamond costs will provide substantial savings to the user of coring equipment. The wire-line principle is not new, having been successfully applied to the large-diameter holes of the petroleum industry. But scaling the practices of core recovery in oil well drilling down to the small BX hole presented a number of problems. The technique, difficult even for large holes, was complicated by the exacting limitations of the small diameter in which durable and foolproof mechanisms would be required to operate. Since the maximum benefits could be realized from this sys- tem in holes 1000 ft and deeper or in holes in badly fractured ground, the drill string would have to be able to withstand heavy stresses. Most vital to the success of the idea was the development of a positive latching mechanism to assure proper positioning of the inner tube of the core barrel when the tube is dropped into place. Lastly, little was to be gained from the wire-line method without diamond bits that would give optimum penetration rates and a long service life in the drillhole.

IN the course of an investigation directed toward expanding ground-water facilities in Essex and Morris counties, New Jersey, the Board of Water Commissioners of the city of East Orange authorized a seismic-refraction survey1 for the purpose of delineating bedrock topography below unconsolidated overburden. Results of the survey were highly satisfactory and led to the preparation of a comparatively detailed bedrock contour map. Knowledge of the bedrock depth and configuration was an important aid in selection of sites for test drilling. The portion of the East Orange Water Reserve under consideration is in the flood plain of the Passaic River about 10 miles west of Newark, N. J. The flood plain is about 175 ft above mean sea level and is bordered by low hills rising to elevations of approximately 250 ft. The bedrock underlying the Water Reserve consists of sandstone and shale of the Triassic Brunswick formation and is covered everywhere by deposits of unconsolidated glacial outwash sand and gravel, lacustrine clay, and recent river silt as much as 150 ft thick. Yield of wells in the sandstone and shale averages 100 to 200 gpm. Since production wells constructed in the sand and gravel aquifer in the buried river valley shown on the contour map (Fig. 1) yield 300 to 1400 gpm, it was proposed to locate additional production wells in this buried valley, where the yields per well would be maximum.

Although the first application of strip mining dates back to 1866, the true origin of today&apos;s problem of land reclamation is found in World War II, when the yawning war machines demanded more, and faster fuel production. To meet the new wartime demands, the strip coal mining companies that had been producing coal for the normal needs of industry and commerce during peacetime worked to the full extent of their capacities but were unable to satisfy the voracious demand. To supplement the production of the established mining firms, a host of temporary, make-shift coal strip operations came into being-road contractors, ditchers and foundation excavators, earth movers of every type became strip coal operators. Unfortunately, many were of the here-today-gone-tomorrow category, and showed little concern for the condition of the land after mining. Likewise, the land owners of the mined properties (most of the land was on royalty lease or tonnage contract) showed little concern. Land owners realized from their acreages more income during the war years of coal production than could have been obtained in two or three lifetimes of conventional farming or other land uses. Most of these mined lands were sub-marginal with little productive promise. As a result the wartime stripping produced most of what are known today as "orphan banks" or "abandoned strip pits." It is of these that so much of the present day complaints about strip mine reclamation are being made.

A PRESENT, a comprehensive account of the geology and ore deposits of the Robinson mining district, in eastern Nevada, is not warranted. Though several years&apos; work has been done, the district is so large that it will be some time before the investigation nears completion. In this paper I purpose merely to discuss methods of study and the application of geologic data to the search for ore. In the first place, the purpose of a geological depart¬ment in a mining organization is to collect and correlate all geologic and engineering data likely to be useful. In an extensive and well developed mining camp this involves a detailed study of the structure and stratigraphy of the district as a whole, as well as careful analysis of the orebodies exposed. The problem then is to find continuations or similar ore environments in other parts of the district in which like phenomena have been active, and to explore these for new orebodies. Experience gained in other similar mining districts is useful but one must always remember that a great many mining districts are unique and that exploration rules and procedure applying to one cannot always be transferred to another of apparently similar character and be made to work. One also has to be careful in moving from one to another part of the same district. The geologist must first examine the region critically to determine its individual characteristics. .

GEORGE F. BECKER Dr. George Ferdinand Becker, notice of- whose death appeared in the May Bulletin, was born in New York City Jan. 5, 1847, the son of Alexander Christian Becker, member of a Danish family, and Sarah Cary Tuckernian Becker of Boston. Dr. Becker was the last member of the group of distinguished geologists who, in 1879, were associated with Clarence King at the time of the organization of the United States Geological Survey. He was a leader in mining geology and geophysics, and for many years had been the chief of the Division of Chemical and Physical Research in the Geological Survey, and the investigations under his direction led to the establishment of the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. Dr. Becker was a graduate of Harvard University and received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Heidelberg, and in 1871 passed the final examinations at the Royal School of Mines in Berlin. He was for four years an instructor of mining and metallurgy in the University of California, from which he went to the United States Geological Survey. In 1896 he examined the gold and diamond mines f South Africa and at the time of the Spanish-American War was detailed to serve as geologist on the staff of General Bell with the army in the Philippine Islands. He died at his hone in Washington, D. C., on Apr. 20&apos;.1

For some years past, those interested in the development of the increasingly important mining industry of Canada, havc urged the adoptioi~ by the Dominion Parliament of a federal mining-law, which would have the force and stability of statutory enactment. At present, placer-mining in the Yukon Territory is governed by the Yukon Placer Mining Act. All other mining under federal jurisdiction is governed by Orders in Council and Ministerial Iiegulations. In the earlier stages of development, it is perhaps a matter of neces~ity that these important matters should be so dealt with; but it is now felt that the time has come when mining-rights in the extensive regions under federal control should be put on a permanent basis, and that any changes required from timc to time should be made only after full and open discu~sioii in Parliament. A short sketch will suffice to indicate how vast and varied the interests affected really are. When the Dominion of Canada mas constituted by the Inlperial Statute known as the British North America Act of 1867 (which into force by proclamation on July 1 of that year), it comprised only the present Provinces of Ontario, Quebec, Nora Scotia, and New Brunswick; but provision was made for the inclusion of Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, British Columbia, Rupert&apos;s Land, and the North West Territories. ThE following chronology presents the history of lead-mining in the United States in a brief form and is a useful reference in connection with the statistics of production: 1621.. Lead was mined and smelted near Falling Creek, Va., to supply the local demand for bullets and shot. This was the first mining and .smelting of lead in what is now the United States. 1632. In a report made on the minerals of New England, lead-ore is mentioned. (Bishop, I., 470.) 1650. Supposed beginning of mining by Jesuits in Pima county, Ariz. 1651. Grant of lead-mine at Middletown, Conn., to Gov. John Winthrop. 1682. Lead-ore supposed to have been discovered in Wisconsin by Nicholas Perrot. (K. D. Irving, Mineral Resources of Wisconsin, Trans., viii., 498.) 1700 Discovery of lead in Missouri by Penicaut, one of Le Sueur&apos;s party. Tile same expedition discovered lead near the southern boundary of Wisconsin in August of the same year. 1712. Grant by Louis XIV. of the Crozat patents, with special privileges respecting the discovery and operation of mines in the then territory of Louisiana. (New York Meeting, February, 1913.) THE Elk City mining district of Idaho occupies a position near the geographical center of Idaho county, a region of mod¬erate elevation in the western foot-hills of the Bitter Root mountains. The district comprises an area of approximately 350 sq. miles, bounded oil the west by the Newsome district and on the south by the Dixie and Oro Grande districts. There are no mining districts to the north or east. Elk City, the principal town and the seat of the mining office for the district, is situated in a hydrographical basin surrounded by low hills. The elevation is 4,200 ft. above sear level. Through this basin flow Elk Creek, Red river, and American river, which unite west of town to form the south fork of the Clearwater. The one township is set out from the Bitter Root Forest Reserve. Though a railroad starting from the Stites terminus of the Clearwater Short Line of the Northern Pacific railroad has been under consideration for some years, the camp is yet with¬out railroad facilities. The projected road would follow the south fork of the Clearwater on easy grades, but would be very expensive to build and maintain. While such a road would greatly benefit those who are now operating in the camp, and in a slight degree stimulate interest in its possibilities, there is hardly business enough to warrant its construction.

In the Kaernthner Zeitschrift, No. 2, 1881, p. 53, et seq., Prof. Ledebur details some experiments on the power of various silicates of lime and alumina, magnesia and alumina, and lime, magnesia and alumina, to remove sulphur from pig-iron, from which it appears (as has long been recognized in practice) that the more basic the silicate the greater the quantity of sulphur it will take up; but also that for the same grade of silicate, this quantity is greatest for the lime-alumina silicate and least for the magnesia-alumina silicate, the lime-magnesia-alumina silicate occupying an intermediate position, and he concluded therefrom (p. 59) that, for the production of pig-iron low in sulphur, pure limestones are to be preferred to those containing magnesia. The plant, animal, and mineral arts and sciences are interrelated, interdependent, equally distinctive subject-matter fields. The artificial, erroneous, and popular idea that minerals occur in great storehouses in nature&apos;s treasure room to be removed at will at fabulous profits is about as correct as the assumption that the farmer&apos;s life is one of ease in which the crops spring miraculously from the ground. However, both of these fundament-a1 industries, mining and agriculture, have much in common. The extraction of minerals from the ground and the extraction of plants from the soil for immediate use, or conversion to meat, are fundamental activities and subject to many common economic laws. In other words, in many important basic concepts there is little difference between surface and subsurface crops. The farmer owner working the surface of the earth and the owner of a fraction of the oil or coal rights in the subsurface, from which a small yearly income is derived, are interested in the best management of the land for the mutual benefit of all concerned. Therefore, it is essential that in any planning or political action intended to create a new scheme of things, it should be remembered that one plan must fit all sources of primary wealth, whether coal or wheat, petroleum or milk, iron ore or beef.1 And what basic economic difference is there in the processing of a gallon of petroleum and a bushel of corn?

THE origin of recrystallization textures continues to be a matter of controversy. One explanation is that a recrystallization texture occurs because only grains having a limited range of orientations ever appear in the deformed matrix—the oriented nuclea-tion* hypothesis. Another explanation is that grains essentially having all orientations are nucleated but that those having certain orientations grow much more rapidly than any others in the deformation texture, and thus only the rapidly growing grains survive when recrystallization is complete. There has recently appeared a great deal of evidence&apos;- indicate that recrystallized grains of face-centered cubic metals are frequently related to their parent grains by rotations of 20" to 40" about a common [lll] direction. Furthermore, it has been observed that the growth rate of the new grains depends upon their orientations with respect to the matrix, and that the most rapidly growing grains lie within the stated range of orientations. In a recent note, Beck7 has concluded from observations of this type that oriented growth alone is responsible for the appearance of preferred orientations in re-crystallized metals. It should be pointed out. however, that many of the available data indicate that oriented nucleation operates in addition to oriented growth. Thus, while oriented growth may permit a selection to be made among nuclei of several orientations, only a limited number of orientations are available in the first place for such selection.

Although 1931 witnessed no new discoveries of oil or gas in Oklahoma, the year is especially outstanding because of price demoralization, political intervention, abandonment of marginal properties, a strict curbing of oil flow from wells in flush fields and an extension of proration into settled fields. In spite of a strict, adherence to proration agreements, the price per barrel of oil sank from 65c to $1.07 to a low level of 10c to 22c. Table 1 gives the price range for crude oil in Oklahoma during the year. Under a martial law order by the governor, a period intervened from Aug. 4 to Oct. 10, of complete shutting in of the flush fields. This condition created an abrupt decline in the production curve during the two months&apos; period. Oklahoma, as elsewhere, is passing through a "transition period" of relieving expensive above-ground storage by maintaining the more copious supplies of crude oil in the natural reservoirs. For many years the thousands of small, nearly depleted wells have been considered as being the "backbone of the industry." A large number of wells of this type are now idle or completely abandoned. More than 1100 abandonments were recorded by the state Corporation Commission during the year. The industry is becoming less interested in these small wells, replacing the former attitude by the curbed potentialities of flush pools. SINCE the discovery, of von Laue, that a crystal forms a natural grating for X-rays, our knowledge of the structure of solids has gone forward with rapid strides. This progress is not only of purely scientific interest, but has also yielded direct technological results. One of the most valuable results is the broadening of our knowledge of the structure of pure metals and alloys. To promote these studies it is often desirable to have at our disposal pieces of metal consisting of one single crystal. As is so often the case in the natural sciences, we obtain the best results by making our earliest experiments on pure, simple materials and avoiding unnecessary complications. The Cryogen Laboratory at Leyden followed this method with much success, because the work was done at such low temperatures that the heat movement of the atoms was almost&apos; absent. Similarly we can simplify the studies of metals by leaving out of consideration the influence of the grain boundaries and the mutual influence of the crystals by using unicrystalline instead of polycrystal-line metal. Methods of making single crystals have been scientifically studied during the past few years. Some methods were already known in the arts, but these have been improved and new methods have been developed. It docs not seem to be generally known that some American pig-irons contain notable amounts of vanadium, and while the present investigation is far from covering the whole range of irons, it is hoped that, at least, it may serve to call attention to the importance of looking for this element. The majority of the pig-irons investigated were made in the Lehigh Valley and neighboring furnaces, using more or less New Jersey magnetite in their mixtures. Many of these ores, and probably all of them, contain a little vanadium as well as titanium; the ore from one of the largest of these mines contains 0.05 per cent, of vanadium and 0.60 per cent. of titanium. Dr. Thomas M. Drown was the first to detect the presence of vanadium in the incrustations1 occurring on certain pig-irons, and he also found this element in a number of magnetites, but the methods for its accurate determination had not, at that time, been well worked out. In a general way, it may be said that the Lehigh Valley pig-irons contain from 0.02 to 0.05 per cent. of vanadium and from 0.10 to 0.20 per cent. of titanium. These elements follow the silicon; that is, the furnace-conditions which produce a high-silicon, low-sulphur iron will cause the maximum reduction of vanadium and titanium, and
