"Chromium Nitride (CrN) thin fihns were deposited on steel AISI 316 substrates with reactive magnetron sputtering method. CrN films were produced under two different conditions. In the first one, the substrate was heated by a d.c. source. At the second coating was applied a negative substrate bias voltage. X ray diffraction, quantitative energy dispersive and scanning electron microscope, were employed to characterize their phases, chemical composition and microstructure. Additionally microhardness was evaluated using a microhardness tester. The results show that the phase formation of CrN thin films in the first case (with temperature) is better. Both coatings presented homogeneous surface. Their compositions shows differences though that gases flow are same. The BHP Copper Refinery at San Manuel, AZ employs conventional electro-refining technology, plating at a current density of 335 A/m2 on six kilogram copper starter sheets. In 1995, a combination of variable anode chemistries and increasing current density in the tankhouse created periods of increased bismuth in cathode. Bismuth in electrolyte was minimized by bleeding electrolyte to the nearby BHP leaching facility. However, the expected drop in cathode bismuth was not achieved. Investigations indicated that starter sheets contained a significant concentration of bismuth. The bismuth was found to occur in combination with antimony on the surface of the sheet adjacent to the mother blank. Studies were conducted to determine the mechanism by which Group VB elements are incorporated into the starte sheets. Operational practices were introduced to minimize bismuth in starter sheets and improve cathode quality.

This paper tries to make a study about the use of calcium carbide during the tapping in replacement of part of the aluminum used in the furnace tapping, analyzing theoretical consumptions and then transfering the practice to the plant.
