"Mining activities, especially underground mining operations, create great demands on utilized haulage means which cover a variety of different horizontal and vertical distances. In the course of the continuous optimization of the haulage process, the application of textile machine elements, in particular synthetic fiber ropes, offers new opportunities. Therefore the current level of knowledge needs to be improved based on extensive analyses. For the estimation of the scope of these analyses, different fields of application and occurring environmental influences which have an impact on synthetic fiber ropes during their use in underground mining have to be evaluated. The Chair Underground Mining Methods of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg works on a scientific project concerning the use of synthetic fiber ropes in underground mining operations. This paper focuses on the potential application of synthetic fiber ropes in haulage systems in underground mining and exposes critical influences as an outcome of the working environment. These first investigations are the basis for the development of an appropriate experimental series. SYNTHETIC FIBER ROPES FOR UNDERGROUND MINING OPERATIONS The main idea is to optimize underground haulage means to develop even more economic systems. The new and lightweight design of single machine elements seems to be the first step to accomplish this goal. An example is the lightweight design of shaft hoisting ropes. The commonly used steel wire ropes are very heavy and are endangered to snap due to their own weight when reaching a distinguishing length. Thus they may not or only conditionally be used for deep mining operations utilizing shaft haulage. Ropes made of high-tech synthetic fibers weigh only an eighth of steel wire ropes while displaying the same tensile strength. This relation is shown in Figure 1, based on the comparison of fiber strength and density. This could offer new opportunities for deep mining operations, which are anticipated by many mining companies. /1/"

Phase designs are the foundation upon which all open pit mine sequence optimizations and budgets should be built. Unfortunately, at times, mine engineers skip the step of developing realistic pit phase designs - designs that include access ramps and mineable widths. Without mineable phase designs, their optimized schedules are based on theoretical pit shells or ?quick-and-dirty? plans with no ramps. The output from such optimizations is almost always overly optimistic. Without mineable designs, the production estimates are misleading, because they overestimate ore, and underestimate waste stripping requirements. Worse yet, when plans are not based on realistic phase designs, they can point to exactly the wrong decision in feasibility studies (i.e. ?go? when it should be ?no-go?). This paper discusses the importance and features of good pit phase design, and demonstrates the pitfalls of relying on optimized production sequences that are not based on properly designed pit phases.

The concept of disposing of liquid industrial wastes by deep-well injection is not a new one. Brines associated with crude oil long have been disposed of in this manner, with the additional benefit of aiding secondary oil recovery. More recently, with the expansion of nuclear energy, the lethal, highly radioactive wastes which are by-products of the fission process have created severe disposal problems. During the past ten years, a variety of industries have resorted to subsurface disposal, some of the details of which are given elsewhere (1,2). The list reveals wide variations in injection rate, pumping pressure, cost, and waste disposition. Included are successful installations in Western Pennsylvania.

New Gold?s New Afton Mine, located 8 km (5 miles) west of Kamloops, British Columbia, is a 4.5-Mt/a (5-million stpy) block cave mine, making it the highest tonnage underground hard rock mine in Canada. The reserve is estimated at 52.5 Mt (55.9 million st) with grades of 0.65 g/t (0.02 oz/st) gold and 0.93 percent copper (2012). Commercial production was achieved in July 2012 and nameplate production was achieved ahead of schedule in September 2012, with the cave breaching to surface in 2013. The mill has a SAG and a ball mill with a froth flotation circuit.

"Location. The copper mines of Michigan are all in the northern part of that state on the Keweenaw Peninsula, which extends from the (Michigan) mainland for about seventy miles northeasterly toward the middle of Lake Superior. The mines occur in a belt or zone occupying the central portion of the peninsula from end to end.. The most productive mines for many years past have been those located not far from the city of Houghton in' the central part of the zone, in a section extending about ten miles southwest of Houghton and fifteen miles northeast. The most important mines in order of location, from the northeast to south¬west, are the following: Mohawk, Ahmeek, Allouez, North Kearsarge, Wolverine, South Kearsarge, Centennial, Calumet. and Hecla, Osceola, Franklin, Quincy, Hancock, Isle Royale, Superior, Baltic, Trimountain, and Champion. The first three named are in Keweenaw county and all of the others are in Houghton county. Still farther to the southwest are the Lake, Mass, Adventure, Michigan, Victoria, and White Pine mines. These are in Ontonagon county.History. The exploitation of these copper mines extends back into prehistoric times. There is little evidence that the American Indians carried on mining operations in this region in the period shortly before the advent of white men, but there is abundant evidence that the ancestors of the Indians, •or some earlier inhabitants of the region, carried on primitive mining operations. For example, Mr. S. O. Knapp, Agent of the Minne¬sota Mining Company, in the winter of 1847-48, made the first discovery of prehistoric mining. Alacer Gold Corporation is constructing the Çöpler Gold Mine in eastern Turkey. Mining commenced in the fourth quarter of 2009 and gold production started in the fourth quarter of 2010. The mine is a 15,500 t/day oxide heap leach with three-stage crushing, agglomeration, carbon adsorption and electrowinning for final metal recovery. Leach solution copper levels are expected to be relatively low during the first two years of production, but will increase in later years due to higher copper content in the mined and processed ore. Over the mine life, approximately 40 Mt of ore will be placed on the leach pad, which will contain about 35,000 t of copper. Metallurgical testing indicates copper extraction will vary by ore type and, if controls are not implemented, may lead to copper levels exceeding 1,000 mg/L in pregnant solution. High copper levels in leach solution have the deleterious effect of increasing cyanide consumption and potentially overwhelming the ability of the carbon circuit to effectively adsorb the principal economic metals, which in this case are gold and silver. Using data obtained from laboratory leach column testwork, the heap leach facility was modeled using METSIM process simulation software to estimate the build-up of copper in leach solution over the life of the mine. Laboratory testwork was also performed to evaluate process conditions for treating a portion of pregnant leach solution via sulfide addition to precipitate saleable copper as copper sulfide (Cu2S).

Geomechanics signifies the science and engineering of soil and rock materials and of rock masses. It is a field of professional practice and research that draws heavily on the elements of soil and rock mechanics. Geomechanics contributes to a number of disciplines: mining engineering, civil engineering, geological engineering, petroleum and natural gas engineering, and engineering geology (including the elements of geohydrology and geophysics). These disciplines are involved in the design and construction of such projects as mines, tunnels, foundations for structures, excavated rock slopes, dams, shafts, boreholes, oil reservoir wells, underground storage facilities for oil and gas, and hazardous waste repositories. Geomechanics allows us to improve both our environment and our quality of life. In the context of this Handbook, the scope of geomechanics is discussed mainly from the point of view of applications to mining engineering. However, the coverage of the subject mate¬rial is so comprehensive that it is relevant to other disciplines as well. Section 10 covers the field of geomechanics in a structured fashion, beginning with the fundamental principles and leading into practical applications in mining engineering. Throughout the treatment of the subject, knowledge of geologic conditions is assumed since this is discussed in other sections of the Handbook. An important feature of this section is a series of practical examples illustrating the various aspects of geomechanics. In underground stopes that require more than minimal support, backfill is almost universally used. The term cut and fill stopingis used in a broad sense in this section, which describes underground mining methods requiring support. Support in stopes can be classified as local or short-term and general or long-term. Local support for the back of a stope, for example, can be accomplished with rock bolts or timber stulls. General support for the walls of the stope is provided by backfill. Local support provides a safe working place for the stope miners. General support, provided by backfill, preserves the access way to the stope and prevents large scale dilution of ore. If it had not been for the almost unbelievable adventures that came before and after, the last ten months of 19 15 would have been exciting enough for anyone. As it was they were a cheerful interlude. I spent most of the time on our Warren operations catching up on a lot of underground work and visiting Ajo every few weeks to see if my Chuquicamata visit might help solve the New Cornelia problem. While the difficulties were finally solved, at times they seemed almost hopeless. About all I could do to help was to make sure that the ore sent to the pilot plants represented the average ore that must be treated in the final 5000 tpd mill. Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway worked tirelessly with the best consulting advice they could obtain. Credit for the final success was due chiefly to their efforts. Since our old group had given up its "Merry Widow" home in Warren, a few of us got rooms in the company-built Cole Building over the Warren grocery store. This included Jim Lewis, Roy Mitchell, Steve Landon, Paul Stevens, and Hubert d'Autremont who came from Duluth to join our legal staff. Later we rented a small house two blocks from the Calumet and Arizona office. With the now flourishing country club only a 10-min walk away, and an electric car running to it every half hour or so, we were able to give parties in return for the hospitality of our friends. One of the most pleasant episodes came by luck a few days after I got back from Chile. Chester Congdon, a leading director in Calumet and Arizona, with his wife and their daughters, Elizabeth and Helen, spent a couple of days at the Greenway house before making an auto- mobile trip across the desert from Tucson to Ajo. At the same time I arranged to examine the small but rich Bush and Baxter copper mine a few miles from Tucson. "Strategies to improve performance in mining production, maintenance and mineral processing operations have evolved over time from straightforward time studies of individual machine performance in the 1960s-1970s to more sophisticated and better focused statistical and financial tools that have emerged in the 1980s-1990s. These newer strategies fall under the broad descriptive category of operational excellence.Operational excellence is the term that embodies a number of performance evaluating strategies, the most popular and relevant to mining include the following:• Six sigma for addressing errors within mining or milling process and work standards.• Lean manufacturing to optimize organizational and operational performance through continuous improvement.There are other strategies that can be applied as well and this paper is not focused on a review of the pros and cons of any one strategy. However, the common threads in these strategies embody the expectation that expected results from these efforts can be quantified and that value will positively benefit the targeted work process, organizational unit, equipment deployment or time schedule when applied to it as part of continuous improvement efforts.The priority for proceeding with any one or more of these efforts is based on the calculated net value of the required resources to make the change versus the estimated value gained. The practice is identified as the value mapping process.This discussion summarizes the value mapping process methodology used at a mature uranium mine and mill in northern Canada to work through the myriad of potential improvement efforts available through the operational excellence process for continuous improvement."

Next year, in 1964, Butte will celebrate its Centennial. It was in May, 1864, that the first recorded mining activity took place. During that summer, several rich placers were found on Silver Bow Creek and its tributaries, and a gold rush followed. As placer mining proceeded in the creek beds, the quartz lodes on the hillsides were located and the veins were prospected. Mining in Butte entered its second phase when the rich silver mines, the Alice, Moulton, and Lexington, were opened. The silver boom lasted until the decline in the price of silver in the early 1890's forced the closure of many of the mines. An indication of the beginning of the copper mining era in Butte was in 1866 when it was noticed that green copper carbonate discolored some of the, lode material. It was not until ten years later, however, that the Anaconda and St. Lawrence claims were located by Michael and Ed Hickey. The claims were sold in 1880 to Marcus Daly and in 1881, Daly obtained financing and organized the Anaconda Silver Mining Company to exploit the vein The silver venture was a failure because of the predominance of copper which diluted the bullion to only 400 fine.

As the search for new sources of energy and minerals leads to more remote areas of the country - and the world - the need to plan for adequate housing and community facilities for the construction and operations workforces and their families takes on an importance equal to the mining and processing facilities themselves. A corollary to the need for planning is the increasingly crucial need for development companies to devise effective strategies for dealing with the local communities impacted by these projects. Experience has amply demonstrated the high price to be paid for failure to learn this lesson, a price measured in lost productivity, confrontation with local communities, labor turnover, mental health and other social and eocnomic problems. In Sweetwater, Wyoming, a new industrial activity caused the population to double from 18,000 to 36,000 between 1970 and 1974. During that period industrial productivity fell 25 to 40 percent, cost overruns on the principal new industrial facility exceeded 33 percent, annual employee turnover rates climbed above 100 percent, the local mental health clinic workload increased nine times and complaints to the local law enforcement agency increased 60 percent.

"As the concept of autonomous haulage systems (AHS) moves from prototypes to production-ready applications, the operating performance of the haul road will become critical to the overall success of autonomy in mining. Deterioration in road performance will require remediation, human intervention and significant, albeit temporary, changes to operating procedures, to accommodate road maintenance. With autonomous trucks comes the opportunity to reduce road formation and operating width. This will, therefore, generate potentially significant reductions in stripping ratios and improvements to mine economics, but only if the design of the road, and its associated deterioration rate, is predictable and manageable, based on the materials used to construct the road and the maintenance interventions to be carried out on the road.This article presents the assessment of a digital photogrammetric approach to the characterization of a mine haul road surfacing, or wearing course material. Design and maintenance parameters for these roads are currently determined partly from physical particle size distribution (PSD) assessments of ‘in-road’ material. However, this approach does not accommodate the need, nor leverage the benefits from, AHS. The digital imaging approach is assessed in this article, using two standard digital analysis software tools, together with in-service mine haul road wearing course samples and images that are analyzed to determine the applicability and reliability of the approach to deliver a real-time assessment of haul road surfacing conditions and thus to identify the road maintenance interventions required to address deterioration.Enhancements in mine road design, construction and management for the past 20 or more years has largely been focused on short-term tactical needs. Whether the mining engineer is concerned with stress problems in a mine at depth, the development of a new drill bit, or the efficiency of a comminution process, the mechanical properties of the rock with which he must work are of the utmost importance. One of the most popular topics in rock mechanics circles today is ?Is it possible to utilize directly parameters determined from laboratory tests on rock specimens in the analysis of mining engineering problems?? It is the author's opinion that laboratory and .field investigations have not yet reached the stage of development where this question can be answered with any degree of certainty. At present, great difficulties are involved in applying the results of laboratory tests to a mining engineering problem. However, this is due in part to the lack of detailed measurements of stress and deformation in the field and in part to the lack of development of satisfactory structural theories to correlate laboratory and field measurements. Furthermore, if mechanical properties measured in the laboratory are to be directly applied to the analysis of mining engineering problems, the critical mechanical properties must be identified, reliable test procedures must be developed and extensive test programs must be carried out.

Until not so long ago most ring geared mills were operated with fix speed motors only. By using the latest generation of medium voltage frequency converters, new possibilities have arisen to improve the grinding process. Beside all the direct and indirect advantages, several dedicated functions have now been implemented for ring geared grinding mills in the minerals industry. The sophisticated operational functions ensure a smooth, safe and reliable operation with minimum stress for the mechanical equipment and therefore utmost availability of the mill. Several papers have already been presented concerning the benefits of using this state of the art technology for mill drives. Now this paper is focusing on the experiences gained with this kind of sophisticated ring geared mill drive system rather than only show and explains the operational benefit of the different functions. Several measurements of different operating conditions, starting, frozen charge remover, controlled roll back, backlash, etc., made on an installed and commissioned 2 x 5 MW dual pinion ring geared mill drive system will be shown and discussed. The accuracy of the load sharing between the two 5 MW motors during starting, normal operation and stopping will be demonstrated using real measurements from an operating system. Finally the inherent features of these drive systems are briefly discussed.

The annual consumption of sand and gravel aggregate in 2006 in the Phoenix, AZ metropolitan area was about 76 Mt (84 million st) (USGS, 2009), or about 18 t (20 st) per capita. Quaternary alluvial deposits in the modern stream channel of the Agua Fria River west of Phoenix are mined and processed to provide some of this aggregate to the greater Phoenix area. The Agua Fria drainage basin (Fig. 1) is characterized by rugged mountains with high elevations and steep stream gradients in the north, and by broad alluvial filled basins separated by elongated fault-block mountain ranges in the south. The Agua Fria River, the basin?s main drainage, flows south from Prescott, AZ and west of Phoenix to the Gila River. The Waddel Dam impounds Lake Pleasant and greatly limits the flow of the Agua Fria River south of the lake. The southern portion of the watershed, south of Lake Pleasant, opens out into a broad valley where the river flows through urban and agricultural lands to its confluence with the Gila River, a tributary of the Colorado River.

The mineral resource potential of the Los Bronces deposit was successfully evaluated by an intense, coordinated program over a 37-month period (April 1978-May 1981) as part of an economic feasibility study. The program included more than 120 km of core drilling, 63 km of access road construction under adverse topographic and climatic conditions, detailed geological mapping, plus other related activities. This Tertiary-age copper-molybdenum deposit is composed of an earlier mineralized porphyry-type body intruded in part by a large complex of mineralized hydrothermal breccia pipes. Both intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks are present. Erosion, oxidation, leaching, and supergene enrichment of copper have resulted in a deposit now exposed at the surface that contains more than 368 Mt grading about 1% copper equivalent as sulfides.

Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project is under construction using shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) for a total length in excess of 50 km. Phase 1 of the project included 36 km of tunnel divided into four lots (1, 2, 3, and 4) of nine km each. Lots 3 and 4 of this tunnel for a total length of 18 km were combined into one award and have been constructed using a double shield (DS) TBM or one path system. Extreme ground convergence in some sections of the tunnel has stalled TBM performance in early reaches, due to face collapse and shield jammings. This paper presents the latest update on the tunnel progress and impact of ground convergence on machine performance based on the information obtained from field observations. Also, the method and results of tunnel convergence measurements were studied in conjunction with geological parameters and an attempt was made to correlate TBM operational parameters and ground convergence. The result of the analysis indicates a good correlation between machine?s operational parameter and tunnel convergence and can be used as an indicator of the potential for high rates of convergence. An early warning on ground convergence is essential for taking precautionary measures to avoid TBM jamming and related long delays and costs.

The RockWorks EarthApps represent a free collection of 74 geology-related programs that read data from a built-in datasheet and create diagrams within Google Earth. EarthApps also includes programs that extract data from Google Earth. The programs that create diagrams include: point mapping (e.g. borehole locations), proportionally scaled icons (e.g. geochemistry), and strike & dip symbols. Line mapping utilities include; polylines, parabolas and pipelines. Polygon mapping programs include; thematic mapping (e.g. geology), mining claims, and public land survey sections. Image overlay capabilities include; draping (e.g. geologic maps) and time-based animations. Vertical image display capabilities are centered on either midpoints (e.g. drill-hole logs) or stretched between endpoints (e.g. cross-sections). The Flyover programs create virtual tours for site presentations. The cell-mapping includes a variety of algorithms (e.g. geochemical and geophysical contouring). Survey programs convert and export survey data to Google Earth as points and polygons. Programs that extract data from Google Earth include; points, lineations, polylines, and polygons. The RockWorks/EarthApps collection is developed by RockWare Incorporated based in Golden, Colorado.

"A high altitude review of the state of the mining industry provided by a study of multifactor productivity shows a continuation of lower output year on year for the capital and labor inputs applied. The story is sadly similar for both U.S. mining and the Australian mining sector. In fact, according to PwC analysts, the world’s mining equipment productivity has declined 20 percent during the past seven years (Lumley, 2014). Although the reasons for the continuing decline in mining productivity are varied, the need for improvement is clear.The world’s mining industry fleet of more than 400 large draglines moves billions of tons of overburden and ore (phosphate, limestone, etc.) annually. This discussion will review a few of the tools available for improved productivity in dragline operations.Benchmarking equipment performance exposes the possibilitiesIn the September 2013 Mining Engineering cover story Graham Lumley and R. Adsero suggested that analyzing best practice equipment performance from an industrywide database for specific equipment performance improvement goals would be beneficial (Adsero, 2013). Benchmarking equipment performance by normalizing differences and then comparing specific measures of performance will provide a road map to improvement for those following the leaders. For those already performing at best practice levels, a benchmark confirms and bolsters what has already been achieved. As described in the SME February 2014 paper by this author, best practice is the average of the top 10 percent in annual output. Filling performance gaps identified by a comparison to best practice by investigating the details of the why and taking action to change, makes all the difference. This is true for all major mining equipment. Given the large gap between average performance and best practice performance most mining operations can benefit. Best practice performance provides a view of what is possible to the 90 percent majority of mining operations that are performing below the top 10 percent.For dragline mining operations, identifying specific characteristics and practices of leading dragline performance will provide a reference for comparison."
