In spite of the large annual expenditures and the vast field of activity covered, it cannot be said that many new grinding machines have actually come to light and modified the existing market for more than half a century. Manufacturers have mainly made advances in increasing machine sizes, efficiency and reliability, and in machine automation. The relatively recent emergence of roller presses is the only exception to this homogenisation of machine ranges. The development of roller presses in pregrinding has shown the advantages of compression grinding over the ball mill from the power consumption point of view. But classical roller presses still have maintenance problems due to the high grinding pressure. The FCB Research Centre has carried out much work in this field and in particular has studied the advantages of this process in pregrinding and integral grinding. These researches lead to the development of two new compression grinding machines. The first one, HOROMILL®, presented for the first time on the 8th European symposium on comminution at Stockholm, finds its application in the field of fine to very fine grinding in dry process. The second one, RHODAX®, presented at INTERMAT in Paris, covers the field of secondary and tertiary crushing and the first stage of grinding for most of the minerals in dry or wet process. Its high reduction factor permits to do with only one machine the work realised today with two or three crushing/milling stages. These two complementary machines offer a wide range of combination summarised on [Figure 1].

Versatile living organisms, historically exploited as functionaries in the food processing, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, have not been successful in achieving similar or significant acceptance within the minerals industry. The current biotechnical revolution coupled with its expanded understanding, dictate that a flagging minerals industry reconsider the use of biotechnology in metallurgical applications. Living resources, either singly, in commensal association or in complex communities, are capable of duplicating fully integrated and complex processing functions. Organisms can mine and extract metals, detoxify chemical effluents and synthetically produce compounds. They have been criticized as exhibiting poor kinetics, excessive energy consumption and environmental sensitivity. However, expanding knowledge reveals that these organisms are surprisingly adaptable, variable and extremely durable. Applied biotechnology in specific cases offers favorable economic returns, environmental benefits and aesthetic value. Selective implementation of living systems can offer opportunities for reduced labor, increased productivity and technological advance. Success will not come easily. Capital must be risked, controversial decisions made and new ground plowed. Traditional, specialist thinkers will of necessity give way to interdisciplinary expertise and unorthodox methodology if success is to be achieved. Those who vigorously persevere, however, are likely to be rewarded with a dynamic and profitable new role in a restructured minerals industry.

INTRODUCTION In this chapter, the term "down-the-hole drill" (DTH drill) is used as a generic name that encompasses the various trade names and other references such as "downhole drill," "in-the-hole drill," etc. This chapter is limited to a description of DTH drills used in stoping large underground ore bodies. DTH drills differ from conventional drills by virtue of the placement of the drill in the drill string. The DTH drill follows immediately behind the bit into the hole, rather than remaining on the feed as with ordinary drifters. Thus, no energy is dissipated through the steel or couplings, and the penetration rate is nearly constant, regardless of the depth of the hole. Since the drill must operate on compressed air and tolerates only small amounts of water, cuttings are flushed either by air with water-mist injection or by standard mine air with a dust collector at the collar. HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT Mine managers have long known the economies enjoyed by quarry and open-pit operators in producing large quantities of ore. The savings are due primarily to the availability of massive equipment, capable of drilling large blastholes to reduce the amount of drilling, increase the fragmentation, reduce secondary blasting, and im¬prove the flow of the product. In an attempt to reduce underground mining costs, various methods are used for long-hole drilling, includ¬ing standard pneumatic percussion drifters and diamond drills. These systems have their shortcomings; percus¬sion drills are limited to small hole sizes and they ex¬perience excessive deviation and significant loss of energy with increased depth. The diamond drills provide deeper and straighter holes, but only at high cost. Both systems suffer from high noise levels, low penetration rates, and poor explosives distribution, among other problems. When the mining companies approached the drill manufacturers for a compact and portable large-hole jumbo for underground use, they specified not more than 1 % deviation on 60 m (200 ft) of vertical hole and a penetration rate of 15 m/h (50 fph). On Dec. 23, 1960, a test unit was placed in service in Montana and met the performance criteria. Though lacking the so¬phisticated features available today, the economies of surface blasting were brought underground. Unfortunately, the first system did not gain immedi¬ate acceptance in the industry. Among the factors con¬tributing to its demise were resistance to change, the need to alter development methods for the ore bodies, and a lack of flexibility in moving the rig from setup to setup and from level to level. In 1972, the mining industry again challenged the drill manufacturers to provide a workable jumbo that would combine compactness, ease of maintenance, relia¬bility, and efficiency, all on a self-propelled chassis. The manufacturers responded by providing improved jumbos, which have been accepted with enthusiasm throughout the mining industry. Today's DTH jumbos are capable of drilling from 100 to 200 mm (4 to 8 in.) diam holes that can be reamed to even larger diameters. The holes can be drilled to depths of 150 m (500 ft), depending upon ground conditions and the capability of the jumbo to retrieve the steel and drill. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical DTH jumbo. APPLICATIONS The uses to which DTH drill jumbos have been put are quite numerous, with new uses being found regularly. For convenience, these uses may be classified as primary blastholes and nonblasting holes. Primary Blastholes The original purpose for the development of the DTH jumbo was for drilling primary blastholes that could be mined by open-stope methods. Prior to the advent of the DTH jumbo, extensive development was required before production drilling could begin. Sub¬levels were required to allow access for column-and-arm stopers or ring/fan jumbos, to the extent necessary based on the effective penetration of the chosen machine. With the DTH jumbo, the mine engineer is able to reduce preproduction time and development costs. How¬ever, the most significant saving results from an im¬proved cost per ton of broken ore in the production phase. To utilize a DTH system, only a top heading and drawpoints are necessary. The top heading can be the width of the ore body with a 3.7-m (12-ft) back. A drop-raise pattern is drilled and shot to begin the stoping operation, providing a free face for subsequent blasting. A typical layout is illustrated in Fig. 2. The advantages of this system include: 1) Drilling and blasting are independent operations, and blasting can be performed at a rate congruous with the mine's ton-per-day capacity. 2) The development layout is simplified. 3) Good explosive distribution is achieved, provid¬ing more uniform fragmentation. 4) Environmental conditions for operators are im¬proved, including improved safety with all work directed downward (not overhead), lower noise levels, little fog, and a reduced dust count. 5) Improved production per manshift. 6) Simplified and easier operator work cycles. 7) Reduced cost per ton of product. 8) Fewer holes lost due to ground shifts. Nonblasting Holes With the introduction of the compact DTH jumbos, other practical uses became apparent, including the drilling of: 1) Holes for sand fill, from level to level and from level to stope. 2) Drain and dewatering holes. 3) Power and communications cable holes.

This paper is an extension of previous work evaluating a new extractant, LIX®-64, for recovery of copper from dilute acidic solutions. Large scale pilot plant operations have confirmed the technical and economic feasibility of the process and, with minor exceptions, scale up parameters obtained by previous laboratory work. Operating problems encountered in the pilot plants are discussed. Design parameters for-scale-up to commercial plants are presented and discussed along with a revised capital cost estimate. The future pilot program is discussed, including minor design changes and the effect of entrained organic on dump leaching efficiency.

Carbon technology has largely superseded filtration plants as the more acceptable gold recovery technology. This has, over the last two decades, provided a tremendous driving force for the development of new equipment. One of the main focus areas of this technological development is the development of effi­cient interstage screening systems. Several variations of exter­nal and internal screens are available, with the more recent shift away from air cleaned units to mechanically swept units. This paper discusses the development of one such mechanically swept interstage screen and how the development led to the suc­cessful implementation of a carousel type of CIP operation. The first generation Pump-cell emerged as a consequence of the success achieved with the mechanically swept NKM screen, The idea was to modify the screen to incorporate the functions of pumping, screening and agitation in a single drive unit, the screen generating sufficient lift for interstage slurry flow so that all contactors would be at the same level. This sys­tem was further incorporated as a high intensity modular CIP contactor, i.e. low slurry residence times combined with high carbon concentrations. A discussion on the kinetic gold adsorp­tion theory and its manipulation in the design of the pump-cell concept is discussed in a paper published in a previous Randol Conference< 1), Testwork carried out at Vaal Reefs proved the concept of the Pump-cell on a pilot plant scale<2), which resulted in the building in 1990 of the first large Pump-cell plant at West Witwatersrand Gold Mine designed to treat 340m3 of pulp per hour and , even though the plant operated successfully with respect to gold recovery performance, a few problems were experienced with the basic engineering design(3),

INTRODUCTION Radon-222 is an inert, radioactive gas formed by the radioactive decay of radium-226, a long-lived member of the uranium-238 decay chain. Radium is present in varying amounts in virtually all soils and, on the average, about 36,000 pCi (1330 Bq) of radon per square meter of soil diffuse into the atmosphere each day (UN 1977). Radon decays with a half-life of 3.6 days through four short-lived daughters to lead210 and it is these short-lived daughters[ [Ra A, (218Po, t, = 3.0 min) , Ra B, (214 Pb, t;, = 27 min), Ra C, (214Bi, t] = 20 min) and Ra C1 (214Po, t] = 2.5 x 10-6 min)] ]which cause the major health hazard associated with radon (Bale 1951). Atoms of these daughters, either unattached or attached to the ever-present particles in air, are deposited on the surfaces of the respiratory tract; alpha particles emitted in their decay can result in large doses to the cells of the bronchial epithelium lining the respiratory tract. These daughters will be present in air in varying relative concentrations depending on the "age" of the air (time since radon emanated into it) and on the amount of mixing of radon and radon daughter contaminated air with clean air. [The practical unit developed to quantify the amount of radon daughters in air is the Working Level (WL). This unit was historically related to the equilibrium concentration of 100 pCi (3.7 Bq) of the short-lived daughters of radon in one liter of air (cf. Holaday 1969) and is defined as any mixture of the short-lived daughters in a liter of air that have a-potential alpha energy of 1.3 x 105 Mev (2.08 x 10-5J) in their decay to lead-210. The working level month (WLM) was developed along with the WL, and was defined as an exposure to one WL for a working month (170 h). This is equivalent to 2.2 x 107 MeV•h•L-1 (3.54 x 10-3 J.h.m-3). If the average breathing rate is taken as 1.2 m3.h•1 (ICRP 1975), then one WLM is equivalent to inhalation of 4.24 mJ of potential alpha energy.] It is now generally agreed that the inhalation of radon daughters is the major potential radiation hazard in uranium mining, and contributes a substantial fraction to the natural radiation exposure of the general population due to the accumulation of radon and radon daughters from natural sources in buildings. Radon daughter concentrations in modern mines are controlled by ventilation, and by blocking off old working areas (cf. Simpson, 1959). However, before the hazard from radon daughters was recognized, considerably higher concentrations of radon daughters were present in some uranium and non-uranium mines. These high radon daughter concentrations resulted in an increase in lung cancers in the mining population, and it is these results that are our main source of information on the risk of inhaling radon daughters. HISTORICAL REVIEW Many excellent reviews of the history of understanding the health effects of inhalation of radon daughters are available (see, for example, Hueper 1942, Lorenz 1944, Sikl 1950, Stewart 1964, Holaday 1969, Lundin 1971, Cross 1979) but a brief summary of some of the highlights in this area may be of interest. [a] 1556: Agricola describes an unusual and fatal chest disease occurring among underground miners in the region of Schneeberg and Joachimsthal (Jachymov) in the Erz mountains in Central Europe. (It is of some historical interest to note that Agricola&apos;s book was translated from Latin into English by a mining engineer and his wife; the engineer later became President of the U.S.A.) [b] 1879: Haerting and Hesse indicated that the majority of deaths among Schneeberg miners were due to lung cancer; the lung cancers in these miners (who were incidentally not cigarette smokers) were observed twenty to fifty years after they began working in the mines. [c] 1896: Discovery of natural radioactivity by Becquerel, followed by discovery of radon by Dorn in 1900. [d] 1924: Ludewig and Lorenser report high concentrations (400 - 15000 pCi or 15 - 570 Bq per liter) of radon in the air in the Schneeberg mines and suggest that radon could be responsible for the high rate of lung cancer among miners. However, the reason why radon should cause lung cancer specifically was still not really understood up to twenty years later (Lorenz 1944). High concentrations of radon in the air in the Joachimsthal mines were reported by Behounek in 1927 and a high incidence of lung cancer among Joachimsthal miners (similar to that among miners at Schneeberg, which is only some 30 km distant but in a different political district) was noted at about the same time (Sikl 1930; cf. Sikl 1950). It is estimated that about half of the Joachimsthal miners died from lung cancer and about half from silicosis and tuberculosis (Sikl 1950). [e] 1930&apos;s and 1940&apos;s: Radioactive ores are deliberately mined in the U.S.A., Canada and other countries primarily as a source of radium for medical purposes and for luminescent dials; other radioactive ores are mined as a source of several non-radioactive minerals, while extensive uranium mining did not begin until the late 1940&apos;s. [f] 1940: Based on crude epidemiology and dose calculations, Evans and Goodman propose 10 pCi L-1 as a maximum permissible concentration of radon in continued human exposure. This is the first known recommended maximum permissible concentration for radon. This recommendation was adopted by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards in 1941 and reconfirmed in 1953. The first form of a surety bond was an honest handshake between two or more parties agreeing to a decision, and their personal guarantee of following through to completion. This has all changed. In 1895, the United States Treasury Department disclosed that $35 million worth of personal surety guarantees on file had become worthless. A law was then passed requiring all surety bonds, in favor of the United States, must be corporate surety bonds. Today, a surety bond is one of the nation&apos;s leading fi¬nancial instruments used to guarantee the completion of an obligation. One hundred-fifty years before cor¬porate surety bonds, outcrops near Richmond, VA, were being mined. These surface mines became under¬ground mines. Today, both are still being used to obtain a leading energy source, coal. Since that time, more than 5956 km2 (1.47 million acres) of coal mined lands have been reclaimed in the US (Coal News, August, 1987). More than 25,000 state and Federal mining permits cover¬ing 14,164 km2 (3.5 million acres) have been issued during the last 10 years. Coal production has exceeded 7.2 Gt (8 billion st). More than 5665 km2 (1.4 million acres) of mined land has been reclaimed by active coal mining opera¬tions and 267 km2 (66,000 acres) of abandoned mined lands have been re¬claimed by others. Reclamation bonds were freely writ¬ten in the 1970s. So why are they almost extinct today? Contract bond losses have been severe in the past several years, sureties reporting losses exceed¬ing 110%. But the same proof is not provided on coal reclamation bonds. A surety bond is generally required when one party has an agreement with another party, and that party wants a guarantee from a third party that a job will be completed according to the terms and conditions of a written contract. In the case of a reclamation bond, the surety company (surety) is the financial party. It extends the credit and a guarantee to the obligee (the State, Commonwealth, or Office of Surface Mining) that the principal (the coal operator/company) will complete the terms and conditions of the contract (the rules and regulations governing mining and reclamation). The Surety Association of America defines a surety bond as an agreement providing for monetary compensation should there be a failure to perform specified acts within a stated period. Webster&apos;s Dictionary defines surety in the following ways: "l: the state of being sure; 2a: a pledge or other formal engagement given for the fulfillment of an undertaking and; 3b: one who has become legally liable for the debt, de¬fault, or failure in duty of another." Banks never make accommodation loans. Either the loan is good or no loan is made. Surety companies feel the same way about surety bonds. In fact, the average person does not realize the dangers of becoming surety for another. How does a surety determine if a company is worthy of receiving surety credit? How is a coal account under¬written today for an obligation that may not be released for many years? When a surety company executes a reclama¬tion bond, it financially puts its name behind the coal company and its guaran¬tee that should the coal miner default on the obligation, the surety will fulfill the contract. How is the surety to determine if a coal company may still be in business five, 10, 20, or 40 years from today?

Traditionally the lime industry is governed by market, location, and transportation. These factors also may act as obstacles to global market access. Lime manufacture responds to market opportunities by first focusing on location. Lime markets are diverse and widespread, and ubiquitous occurrences of limestone make development of a widespread industry possible. Lime’s low to moderate unit value restricts transporting it long distances. Other factors (including lime reactivity, dedicated container use and other liabilities) limit shipping lime far. In the past many small to medium size companies made lime for local use. Today the global aspect of the industry is ownership by few large companies producing lime for local consumption.

We will introduce the legislation’s liability provisions; for example, the recently issued interim guidance clarifying some of the conditions that contiguous property owners, bona fide prospective purchasers, or innocent landowners must meet to qualify for the liability limitations provided in the Brownfields Law.

A ground-support system for grizzly and haulage drifts was tested in Magma Copper Co.&apos;s San Manuel mine. Eight two-piece, wide- flange steel sets were erected in a ventilation drift on the 2315 grizzly level. The sets were lagged with three different materials and back- packed with pea gravel and sand. The pillar on either side of the drift support system was instrumented with stressmeters and rock-bolt load cells, the backfill with pressure cells, and the steel sets with load cells. Results indicate a better survival rate than with typical monolithic concrete.

Infrared spectroscopy has been one of the most useful experimental techniques for the analysis of surface reactions in flotation systems, including surface alteration and surfactant adsorption reactions. With the advent of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers, many low-energy throughput IR experimental techniques previously unused by flotation researchers have come into greater use. In particular, internal reflection spectroscopy (IRS) is the most often used technique for in-situ studies. To date, three IRS methods have been used for in-situ measurements. These techniques are evaluated for use in characterization of surface reactions in flotation systems. The method using mineral crystals as reactive internal reflection elements (IRE) is of particular interest because it allows surfactant adsorption densities to be calculated directly from in-situ spectral data in real time. Application of in-situ FTIR/IRS with reactive internal reflection elements will be demonstrated for collector adsorption reactions in each of the major flotation systems. The alumina (A1203)/sodium dodecylsulfate system is used as an example for insoluble oxide/silicate flotation, while the fluorite (CaF2)/oleate system serves as a paradigm for semisoluble salt flotation. For sulfide flotation, sphalerite (ZnS) is used as the reactive IRE with potassium amylxanthate and potassium ethylxanthate as collectors. In the case of soluble salt flotation, sylvite (KC1) is used as the IRE with n-octylamine as collector. Finally, the use of reactive IREs in the near-IR spectral region and in spectroelectrochemical research is discussed.

These laws provide both private groups and governmental agencies with access to the courts to seek penalties, compliance orders, cleanups, or to forestall developments that could affect ecosystems. Environmental laws and liabilities are also affecting commercial transactions, including the availability of financing. Corporate managers must develop new and innovative methods to address these challenges in order to assure both sustainable industrial growth and stewardship of the environment.

This technical note describes an alternative procedure that can be used in linear programming calculations where the compliance limit of lbs SO2/million Btu for the blending coal is subject to change. Dr. Mateer in his technical note titled "Coal blending for sulfur compliance" (ME, September 1994, p. 1103) defined an "excess sulfur" parameter that provides a valid constraint equation for a linear program optimization. The coals used by Dr. Mateer in his examples are shown in Table 1. To create the parameters for the constraint equations to blend to an SO2 content of 1.2 lbs SO2/million Btu, the excess sulfur for Coal A was defined as Sulfur excess% = 0.5 - 0.6*13,000/10,000 = -0.28 This equation was used to create the constraint equation -0.28A + 0.44B + 1.36C[<] 0.0 Another way to create the parameters for the constraint equation is given below. In these equations: •W is the total weight; •A, B and C are the fractional proportions of each potential blend stocks; •Sa, Sb and Sc represent the percent sulfur content of the blend stocks; •Ha, Hb and Hc represent the calorific content of the blend stocks in Btu/lb; and •H and S represent calorific and sulfur contents of the composite blend. The ubiquity of big data, internet of things (IoT), and smart devices is radically changing society; our personal lives are being tracked, digitally motivated through gamification, where information has become an addiction at all income levels, genders, and generations. These forces should not be held at bay in mining; rather, we should embrace and take advantage of this phenomenon to improve safety and productivity. It is time to rethink long-held conventions behind Fleet Management Systems, such as permanently mounted hardware, connecting through cables and Bblack boxes^, equipment centric rather than operator-centric, wireless requirements, minimal to no feedback to the operator, and high costs. We should also reconsider how we are collecting much of our safety, training, and preoperational forms on paper that then, must be entered into computer systems for compliance, and rarely if ever used in analytics, rather than entering the data directly into a digital device. Collecting safety and location data directly digitally also unlocks the information contained in safety forms and audits enabling new data mining and analytical approaches. Managing then gaining value from this new, greatly expanded mountain of largely unstructured data, requires the use of modern tools and approaches, such as gamification and big data, as well as skill sets, not traditionally available in mines. Furthermore, tablets can now provide a better user experience as well as new sensors when compared with traditional fleet management systems (Mining Magazine 2019, 2016, 2015), at a fraction of the cost, employing the extremely esthetic and engaging visuals derived from the video game industry. Real case studies of these applications of both technology and approach, such as gamification, show that these tracking technologies can bring high visibility and large amounts of data to even the smallest operations and the challenge of making use of the data can be facilitated through the application of gamification. As with our personal smart devices, these technologies are poised to deliver huge improvements in operator feedback, tracking, and performance management, at a much lower cost per unit.

The appearance of very large shielded softground TBM&apos;s, of 14 m (46 ft) O.D. and more, as needed for two-lane highway tunnels, calls for a thorough search of overall stability and new solutions for front support during maintenance operations in the cutting chamber. The paper deals with the development of a shield for the planned 4 th tunnel crossing under the river Elbe in Hamburg. Specific problems arise from the high water head, the shallow overburden of loose soil and the stone-bearing mixed ground. The choice of the tunneling method and the different features provided to overcome the problems are discussed.

Automated monitoring of steep embankments allows the early detection of instability and can be used to avoid or mitigate possible slope failures. A system that uses multiple and different types of sensors has been created and successfully tested at the Highland Valley Copper mine in British Columbia. The system uses robotic total stations (RTSs) as the primary measurement sensor, with surveys repeated at predefined intervals selected to optimize operational efficiency. A methodology has been developed to improve the system’s accuracy and reliability by reducing the effects of systematic errors created by atmospheric refraction and unstable instrument and reference point positions. The inclusion of GPS sensors to monitor the RTS positions creates additional operational flexibility and maintains system integrity when insufficient reference stations are available.

Though the first patent on a bucket wheel excavator was granted in 1881 in the U.S. this technology was developed in Germany to the high standards of today. However, this development was only possible in parallel with the development of shiftable belt conveyors and boom stackers. The combination of these three types of equipment in the open pits of the Federal Republic of Germany has made lignite the cheapest energy source for power generating, despite the low heating value of German lignite in the order of 8500 kJ/kg (3600 BTU/lb) only. Comparing the costs for fuels used in power generating on the basis of their heating value, the relation between lignite, high quality black coal, and imported crude oil is in the order of 1 to 1.5 to 2.5, hence highly in favour of lignite. These cost advantages for lignite in Germany are due mainly to the concentration of lignite mining in a few high-output open pit mines. The largest one, Fortuna Mine in the Cologne district, produced a, total of 45 000 000 t lignite in 1976. That equals the annual fuel need of a 5750 MW power plant running 7000 hours per year at full capacity. Altogether 95 200 000 bank m3 equal to 200 000 000 t overburden had to be removed to accomplish this lignite output. The largest BWE (Fig. 1) ever built is working in the Fortuna Mine, too. At a digging height of 51 m above crawler level, the total vertical reach in relation to the face conveyor level is 98 m by means of its conveying bridge and loading unit. The hourly output is 10 400 bank m3. Its weight in operation is 13 000 t, its wheel diameter 21.6 m, as high as a 7-storey building.

More than 80% of U.S. roof bolts are fully-grouted, but about 1500 roof falls are reported each year. Anchorage failure of a fully grouted bolt can occur when the roof is active near the top of the hole. This paper reports on an extensive series of short-encapsulation pull tests (in which the bolts are installed with only 1 ft of resin) that were conducted in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH) Mine Safety Research Laboratory and operating mines in WV and PA. The tests confirmed that poor anchorage can been countered under some weak rock conditions. Suggestions for improving anchorage are included.
