Underground geologic mapping is an extremely important aspect of any on- going ground control plan. However, the actual use of data derived from such a program is difficult and often leads to subjective analysis. In this regard, computer software has been developed that utilizes a statistical determination of unstable ground conditions based on geomechanical and operational data and collected by mine personnel on a mine-wide, or regional basis. Categorical variables, such as faulting or joint frequency, are selected from local experience to form the framework of a representative data base. Statistical comparisons between the selected variables and a particular ground control problem are conducted and correlations subsequently made. The probability of encountering unstable conditions in virgin areas is assessed as information from these regions is gathered. This data can be derived from surface mapping, cores, and/or geophysical logs. As mining progresses, new data is merged with the existing data base to form a more comprehensive and extensive unit. The advantages of this approach and the acquisition and maintainence of a large data base include the more accurate representation of existing mining conditions, increased confidence in analyzing future problem areas, and elimination of the difficulties which arise when using ground control theories derived for other, often very different, locales.

For many years mill operator training was an informal process which involved senior operators training junior operators on an as-needed basis. The more rapid incorporation of new processing and information technologies, the goal to keep labour costs to a minimum by doing more with less, and the complexity of AG/SAG mill operation has forced companies to have a closer look at operator training. This paper describes a conceptual model of the charge of a AG/SAG mill that can be used for operator training. The conceptual model divides the charge into three regions: cascading, cataracting and toe. Mill behaviour is explained by the changes that occur in each region.

The analysis for total cyanides (CN, or the cyanide due to the combination of free, weakly associated and refractory cyanide complexes) is required by most regulatory agencies for determination of effluent compliance. This method requires a distillation of the sample at low pH's and is most often sent to contract laboratories at a high time and monetary cost. This paper describes a new micro­distillation apparatus which allows for a multiple of CN,"' analyses to be carried out simultaneously saving both time and money. It can be used in the field, since only electrical power is required for the method. While not being appropriate for reporting values to the respective regulatory agencies as of yet, it is quite valuable for screening a large number of samples prior to submission of the samples to a contract lab for "official" reporting.

This paper discusses the Helical Drag Bit (HDB) and its rock drilling applications with an emphasis on use in mining operations. The HDB is a drilling tool that employs cutting members arranged in a pattern to form a helical groove or thread within a borehole. This pattern of cutters can be used for several purposes including roof bolting in mining, interpretation of the lithology of the strata being drilled and low energy consumption drilling. Laboratory and field experiments have consistently shown increase of roof bolt-anchoring capacities in weak rock of more than 100% using the short encapsulation pull test method when boreholes are conditioned using the HDB. In 2004 a series of tests conducted in mines with weak roofs demonstrated the benefits of HDB technology for roof bolting applications in mining. HDB technology offers opportunities for new and beneficial approaches to interpret the geology of roof strata. During conventional drilling, traditional approaches to determine rock properties require simultaneous measurement of several parameters such as thrust, rotational velocity, torque and penetration rate. The unique geometry of the HDB possesses a characteristic that allows determination of the mechanical properties of the rock being drilled by measuring torque as a single drilling parameter. This capability greatly simplifies the process of determining rock properties and provides reliable results. Additionally, HDB technology has been demonstrated to offer significant advantages for rock drilling. A substantial portion of the rock is removed by the fracturing of the internal thread created in the rock bore by the tool taking advantage of the weakness of the rock in tension. Because the rock chips obtained in this process are relatively large, savings in energy are realized when compared to traditional drilling technologies.

A new coarse cleaning device, the Stripa, has been developed for processing of coal in the size range of -100+10 mm. The Stripa is an auotogenous heavy medium separator originally developed for processing of iron ores. Although it has been employed in concentrating ores such as chromite, it has not been applied in coal cleaning. In this study, a pilot plant scale modified Stripa and its counterpart alternative, a diaphragm jig, are compared using subbituminous and lignitic coals. The separation performance of the Stripa and the diaphragm jig has been established in the light of washability properties of the coal samples. Comparison of the performance of the Stripa with that of the jig indicates that the Stripa can be used in coal preparation circuits as an alternative to jigs in the size range of -100+10 mm. Simplicity, low initial investment, and low operating and maintenance costs make the Stripa a plausible candidate for coarse coal cleaning. More importantly, Stripa due to its short residence time, has a superior capacity over jig.

Restrictions on fugitive emissions and crushing operations continue to get tighter. Although fugitive dust control in the gold mining industry has historically been difficult, there are now several options that can make dust control both effective and efficient. Using new technology, mine operators can now design and maintain a dust control program that can reduce product losses, decrease equipment failure, cut cleaning costs, and meet air quality compliance standards as well as provide a better working environment. This paper discusses the sources of fugitive emissions related to the gold mining and crushing operations and describes effective new control methods.

The Waihi Gold Mining Company Limited, Martha Hill Project was the first major hard rock mining operation following the resurgence of the mining industry in New Zealand. Because of its location adjoining a town and at the southern part of the sensitive Coromandel Peninsula, the operation received a high level of public scrutiny. Very srrict limits for effluent criteria had to be met and led to the necessity for advanced wastewater rreatment technology. The process technology selected was the copper catalysed oxidation of cyanide using hydrogen peroxide, with subsequent removal of heavy metals by precipitation and filrration. This paper discusses the adoption of environment limits together with the detailed description of the plant and design criteria. Data of the one year's operational history is also presented.

Mine developers commonly undertake projects that require more funds than they can invest themselves. From that point until they are able to complete a "bankable" feasibility study, they require access to venture capital. In the United States, most venture capital has been provided to the small mining segment of the industry through tax advantaged limited partnerships. Recent changes in Federal tax law makes other forms of financing competitive, and the use of corporations and private and public offerings of shares may soon become more popular ways of securing venture capital. A number of new financial services firms have entered the mining finance business in recent years. They provide mine developers with access to venture capital.

The preparation of coal is essentially the same for export as it is for the domestic market. The big difference, I would say, is that, while coal for certain domestic uses (utilities, for instance) need not always be of the highest quality, as long as it is uniform, the buyer of coal for export invariably demands a well-prepared, top-quality product. And he is willing to pay for it, as long as he knows what he is buying. This is where quality control enters the picture. The day is long past since the export market was the dumping ground for coals which could not be sold on the domestic market. Today, the export buyer wants American coals not so much for a price but for the necessity of blending the American coals with foreign coals to achieve the desired chemical and/or physical characteristics, To blend intelligently, he must know in detail what are the qualities of the coals to be blended. Sampling and chemical analysis facilities at the piers provide the information on the coals exported, These facilities are maintained for the export buyer by independent laboratories; however, in one instance, the buyer operates his own laboratory. With very few exceptions, and Clinchfield?s Moss No. 3 mid-volatile coal is one, cargoes shipped overseas are loaded as blends of two or more coals. Up to now, foreign requirements have not been too clearly defined; therefore, shippers must be prepared to blend mixtures of the desired combination. Successful blending requires an accurate knowledge of the coals shipped. And this makes it necessary for the coal producer to maintain his own control laboratory.

There are approximately 40 million tons per year of phosphate rock produced in the United States, half of it by flotation. The bulk of this is used to produce diammonium phosphate, an essential ingredient in the commercial fertilizer mixes used by the thriving U.S. agricultural community. This paper describes the mineral beneficiation practices of the phosphate industry, with special emphasis on flotation. There is also an attempt to include those items that might be considered emerging technologies for the industry as it faces the problems of a diminishing high-grade reserve and the necessity for implementing dolomite/francolite separations.

The department of the Interior is a federation or holding company of several fiercely independent bureaus which have either jurisdiction or expertise - or both - in a wide range of environmental fields. Each bureau is an advocate for its own concerns and an enforcer of its own mandates. This can be confusing to the company operating in the field. I will try to explain our concerns, help you see where we are "coming from," and give you some insight as to how we can help you. Other speakers have stressed the environmental concerns and site selection factors for uranium wastes so I will focus on the concerns of the Department of the Interior and some of the assistance we can give you in this area People are more aware and more concerned about environmental factors now than they used to be. Thus the past decade has brought about an evolution in both siting and design of uranium mill tailings ponds. Site selection criteria used to be simple - find a tract of land as near to the ore supply as possible with enough space and suitable topography for the expected volume of wastes. Site selections in the past have left a legacy of problems to be corrected - radioactive wastes on stream banks and in floodplains, mill wastes in and near established communities, and unprotected wastes subject to constant erosion. This is no longer acceptable environmentally or socially to a newly aware and concerned public. (Series of 30-35 slides showing uranium mine and mill wastes in Western United States. In conjunction with steady increases in production levels, long-wall operators have applied greater quantities of ventilating air to control respirable dust and methane gas. As a result, air velocities greater than 7.6 m/s (1500 fpm) have been measured on longwall faces. Operators have expressed concern over the potential entrainment of respirable dust at these high-velocities, especially during shield advance as dust falls from the shield canopy directly into theair stream. Laboratory tests to simulate dust liberation by shield movement were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH in a wind tunnel designed to study dust entrainment in high-velocity airstreams. Dust was introduced into the tunnel to determine dust concentration as it relates to entrainment, dilution, air velocity, and particle adhesion. Airborne dust samples were obtained by iso-kinetic sampling using BGI cyclones to quantify respirable dust concentration at the various air velocities. Laboratory tests were con-ducted at velocities ranging from 2.0 to 10.1 m/s (400 to 2000 fpm),and significant differences in airborne respirable dust levels were measured. This research is being conducted to provide fundamental information on the entrainment characteristics of respirable dust at high air velocities, which will subsequently lead to solutions for shield dust control. A discussion of the test procedures and results are presented.

INTRODUCTION Tunnel boring machines in non-abrasive competent rock with little or no water have set new performance standards in the driving of tunnels. However, when the machines have hit blocky or running ground, they have encountered difficulties. The success of a tunnelling machine is usually due to a thorough geological investigation which accurately describes the rock conditions, a well designed tunnel support system, and a tunnel boring machine designed to cope with these conditions. In some cases machines have had to be modified in the tunnel after the machine had commenced boring, because geological conditions were not correctly anticipated before tunnelling began. The features described herein are not a panacea for all conditons, and some of them, like an auxiliary thrust system that thrusts off a precast invert segment requires pre-planning of work on the part of the contractor. CUTTERHEAD DESIGN Figure 1 shows typical cutterheads of ten to fifteen years ago. Note the large buckets and large openings between the buckets. These large openings were considered necessary to gain easier access through the cutterhead for cutter changes. The standard cutter in those days was an 11 inch or 12 inch cutter with small bearings, and was generally a delicate tool for the duty it was to perform. Within the last few years, there have been numerous techno-logical advancements within material handling due, in part, to the introduction of conveying systems and mobile material handling systems to the industry. Although the traditional material handling methods are still commonly used, the introduction of conveyors to the industry has provided companies with some very efficient and economical options. These "new" systems change with the industry to accommodate rigorous demands, ease of operation, and low operating cost requirements. The number of mobile material handling systems utilized in mining operations is increasing, especially in heap leaching applications. Ten years ago, mobile material handling systems like Mobile Stacking Conveyors (MSC) were considered a novelty. There were two (2) MSC's in actual operation and only one of those in a heap leaching application. Today there are numerous proven systems operating at mine sites around the world-La Coipa, Zaldivar, Florida Canyon, Cananea, El Abra, Chuquicamata, and Radomiro Tomic. The popularity of mobile systems is due to the benefits realized by individual projects. As technology advances, so do the concepts behind mobile material handling systems. Implementing self leveling mechanisms, Programmable Logic Controllers, and Global Positioning Systems to control the equipment are just a few of the recent advances that will be discussed in this paper. We will also discuss current proven systems, and touch on what we see as some of the future advances.

The design of underground nuclear waste disposal facilities poses new problems related to the requirement of long term safety against radionuclide migration. The degree and effects of rock disturbance caused by construction and by the long term thermal effects from the hot waste must be predicted with confidence. Computer modeling can, to an extent, be verified by accelerated near-surface tests. Credible extrapolation to deep, long-term conditions requires successful near-surface modeling verification, proper characterization of near-surface and deep rocks, and successful determination of in-situ stresses. Excavation induced disturbance may be assessed primarily by empirical evidence.

A new magnetic liner, with unique magnetic circuit and novel structure designs, was developed. It was characterized by light weight, low noise, as well as corrosive and abrasive resistance. The wear rate of the magnetic liner was one twentieth and one ninth those of the manganese-alloy steel and rubber ones respectively. The forming mechanism of the protective layer and that of influencing factors on magnetic liners were also investigated. The research results could not only instruct using magnetic liner, but also widen their application.

INTRODUCTION The mining industry has been under- going a significant restructuring for the past several years. Some firms have been liquidated. Some have been merged with other firms. A number of mining divisions of larger firms have been spun off, in some cases in leveraged buyouts by management. Recently, there have been a number of spin outs of gold subsidiaries. There are also a number of start-up situations where new firms are emerging as significant gold producers through mine development or acquisition. This restructuring has created an attractive market for specialized mining finance firms, and a number of firms have recently entered that field in the United States. These firms provide financial advisory and valuation services to mining firms and project developers, and access to venture capital. In some cases, they invest for clients or for their own account. I have been asked to describe how our firm works, and what kind of information we expect to receive when mine developers seek our assistance in financing a project. HOW WE OPERATE Denver Mining Finance works for both mine developers and investors. We also provide expert advice on mining issues to governments and to firms who are in litigation over mining issues. A lot of our work involves valuing mineral interests for various purposes. Our principal expertise is in the technical, commercial, and financial area. We help put mining deals into shape commercially so that they can be financed, and we help investors get into mining deals that are commercially sound. We work on projects, but we also advise mining firms on the structure of their business and how to make the most out of one or several mines that they might own. In addition to our work for clients, we are also prepared to invest in mining projects for our own account, and to recommend gold properties for acquisition by our parent company, Royal Gold, Inc. We are, to some extent, a venture capital firm, in that we sometimes work with projects that are not "bankablerV1 and are prepared to invest in attractive early-stage situations in mining. However, I want to emphasize that our principal focus is on development of commercially attractive mining projects that can be brought into production in the best possible financial terms. If we can make a project qualify for a project loan from a commercial bank, we will not advise the developer to use high cost venture capital. For the purpose of this paper, I will focus primarily upon our functions with respect to development of precious metal projects. In a typical case, a firm with an advanced-staged project approaches us for help with financing the final feasibility study, and construction and operation of a mine. In some cases, the developer has already developed a financing plan and wants only our access to investors. If we agree that the project is sound and that the financing scheme will be attractive to investors, we will help the developer reach investors on a commission basis. In such cases, we are particularly insistent that the financing plan and our participation meet all regulatory requirements, particularly compliance with state and federal securities laws. In most cases, however, the developer asks us for advise both on how to structure the financing, and how it can be implemented. Here we work for fees based on hourly rates for advisory work,

[Full-scale laboratory experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of ventilation and water spray pressure on the potential dust capture efficiency of a ventilation system comprised of blowing ventilation and an underboon scrubber. The tests were performed for a 1.52-m (5-ft) roof height and 2.36 m-3/s (5000 cfm) blowing ventilation volume, and a 2.44-m (8-ft) roof height and 4.72 m3/s (10.000 cfm) blowing ventilation volume at three face positions of the miner. The scrubber suction rate was varied for the tests to study the effect of scrubber flow rate on capture efficiency. The airflow patterns and scrubber efficiency were determined by performing tracer gas tests. Tracer gas was released through a manifold placed in front of the rotating miner drum. The gas was sampled in a grid fashion using a real-time multi-point gas sampling system. The capture efficiency of the scrubber was evaluated based an the peak gas concentration of the gas laden air drawn through the scrubber and the amount of gas passing, through the scrubber as a fraction of the gas released at the face. The data were analyzed to yield scrubber peak concentrations, potential exposures at various operator locations and the gas removal percentage (GRP). The underboom scrubber appears to work best in the end sump position, relative to the start sump and start slab positions. The capture efficiency scrubber was higher for 2.44-m (8-ft) roof heights compared to 1.52-m (5-ft) roof heights. The data also showed that the scrubber air discharged behind the mining machine may be drawn into the face area by the action of the blowing ventilation system, resulting in recirculation.]

Minerals for electronic and optical uses divide easily into two sections: 1) quartz and 2) minerals other than quartz. QUARTZ The properties of quartz crystal that make it useful for radio communications were discovered in 1918. Since that time, an in¬dustry for the mining and processing of natural quartz crystal has grown, matured, and been almost entirely replaced by new tech¬nology. The new technology still involves quartz crystal, but ma¬terial that is grown rather than mined. An economic summary of the commercial growing of quartz crystals has a place in a handbook directed to the mineral engi¬neering industry because quartz crystals have long been an impor¬tant commercial mineral, and the raw material for cultured quartz - ¬that is to say, quartz crystals grown through the ingenuity of man - is still natural quartz. Nearly all the natural crystals that have been used for elec¬tronics and optics came from Brazil. The larger pieces which met rigorous standards of quality were used for electronic and, to a lesser extent, optical components. Smaller pieces and fragments were used for vitreous silica. The need for high quality material in quantity led to US government sponsored research and exploration programs in the 1940s. No deposits meeting the very rigid requirements for electronic-grade quartz were found, but other projects resulted in the development of a process for the factory growth of beautiful crystals of prescribed shape, size, and quality. Domestic deposits of appropriate quality were identified to use as raw materials for the quartz culturing process. The development of the cultured quartz crystal illustrates the success that technology can have in adapting a product of the mine to increasingly sophisticated uses. A remarkable achievement per¬haps, but foreshadowed by experiments by Giorgio Spezia (1908), an Italian geologist studying the relative effects of temperature and alkaline environment on the solubility of quartz. Modem radio equipment is most often controlled as to fre¬quency by the presence in the circuit of a separately added crystal¬ - the 1918 discovery responsible for the existence and growth of the quartz industry. The crystal is quartz, but this component is a carefully oriented and prepared slice from a crystal, but not a crystal as recognized by a rock hound or seen in a museum. How quartz operates to control frequencies is not a proper subject for a handbook on industrial minerals, and references should be consulted (Cady, 1964, Mason, 1964). Quartz belongs to a class of materials called dielectrics: those that do not conduct an electric current but permit electric fields to exist and act across them. Quartz shows the piezoelectric effect, which means that when a quartz plate is mechanically deformed against its natural stiffness, one of its surfaces becomes negatively charged, the other positively charged. When the plate is released quickly from the stress, the charges disappear as the plate regains its original shape, but because of mechanical momentum the plate deforms in the opposite direction (to a lesser amount) and the surfaces correspondingly become charged in the opposite direction. By thinly coating the two surfaces with metal and attaching flexible wires, these charges can be brought into an electronic circuit. If the surfaces are suddenly electrically charged by movement of current through the wires, the converse piezoelectric effect occurs and the plate deforms. Carry the thought further and it is realized that an alternating current flowing through the wires responds to the mechanical oscillation. By controlling the thickness of the plate, its mechanical vibration frequency can be varied through a wide range. One type of quartz plate, the AT-cut, has a precisely defined orientation with respect to the crystallographic axes of the crystal and vibrates on a microscopic scale much as a book would deform when placed flat on a table and the top cover moved parallel back and forth with the hand. At least 17 other orientations have been studied, some of which have preferred uses in various applications (Cady, 1964). The quartz crystal industry is composed of three main segments (excluding fused quartz and quartz used for optical purposes): 1. Natural electronic-grade quartz crystals. Mined quartz suitable for fabrication into piezoelectric units. Zlobik (1981a) esti¬mated the waste to ore ratio at 1:1000 to 1000 000, depending upon the deposit. 2. Lasca. Mined quartz usable as feedstock in the production of cultured quartz. Approximately 0.63 kg of lasca are required to produce 0.45 kg of cultured quartz. 3. Cultured quartz. Cultured quartz is produced from lasca feed¬stock in a process of crystal growth in an autoclave under conditions of heat, pressure, and time. It is estimated that 0.45 kg of cultured quartz is equivalent to 1.4 to 4.5 kg of natural quartz crystal in yield of commercial quartz suitable for slicing into piezoelectric units. Fly ash as an additive for oil well cement was introduced to the oil industry by the Halliburton Company in 1949. Since its early usage in the Illinois area of the U. S., the total amount of fly ash pumped into wells has exceeded 30 million sacks, The advantages of using fly ash-portland cement mixtures in wells are fundamentally the same as for concrete except the conditions of placement and curing are variable and the nomenclature of properties are expressed somewhat differently. In some instances deep wells have been cemented with mixtures of fly ash and hydrated lime together with an activator which functions as a catalyst for setting. This fly ash-lime formula has many advantages for high temperature-pressure conditions found in wells.
