Reflected light microscopy was used to study the mineralogy and textures of experimental reactions of a nickel concentrate with a slag. Such an interaction is an important step in the bath smelting of nickel sulphide concentrate. Concentrate particles in the central portions of the pellets are rounded and develop vermicular S02 gas porosity. In the outer portions of the pellets, the original minerals of the concentrate, i.e., pyrrhotite, pentlandite, pyrite, chalcopyrite and violarite, have agglomerated and reacted to form two intergrown phases: pyrrhotite solid solution (FeO.75Ni0.18Cu0.01S) and pentlandite solid solution (Fe0.58Ni0.51Cu 0.03S). Magnetite formed euhedral crystals, skeletal crystals and dendrites at the margins of the matte. Prismatic, ferrohypersthene and octahedral Mg-Al-Fe spinet crystals and dendrites are present in the glassy slag. NEW ROUTES - 63rd STREET CROSSTOWN The New Route construction along East 63rd Street in Manhattan began in 1969 with the East River tunnel connecting Manhattan and Queens. The 63rd Street Line, once in Queens, is planned to connect to another new route called the Queens By Pass or Super Express (See Exhibit 1) which would connect to the Queens Boulevard Line at Forest Hills. The purpose of the Queens By Pass was to alleviate subway congestion to and from the Borough of Queens, whose population had rapidly expanded during and after World War II. The existing Queens Boulevard subway lines (the "E" and the "F" trains) are almost filled to capacity at their terminal stations with passengers from Long Island. Passengers boarding trains enroute from the local Queens stations have difficulty boarding crowded trains, and, at times, cannot board the trains. The New Routes, thus, were to give additional train capacity into Manhattan and thereby relieve the crowded conditions along the Queens Boulevard corridor. PROFILE - METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION The portion of the New Route passing east-west under East 63rd Street on Manhattan (See Exhibit 2) had to snake beneath intersecting structures running north and south, such as the Con Rail tracks below Park Avenue and the 80 ft deep Lexington Avenue Express track structure along Lexington Avenue. The traditional approach to mine ventilation planning involved making estimates of airflows, including leakage routes, and summing the corresponding pressure drops along consecutive paths in order to determine the fan pressures required. This methodology changed completely with the availability of computers. Mainframe digital computers began to be used for mine ventilation network analysis in the mid-1960's. Their use spread rapidly throughout the world in the 1970's. Mainframe machines were employed owing to the need for high speed numerical procedures and substantial storage requirements. However, during the past decade, the growing availability of low cost but powerful microcomputers has allowed the development of net- work analysis programs that can handle ventilation systems of hundreds of branches, and which can produce results within a few minutes. This paper discusses recent advances in software and hardware development specific to mine ventilation planning. Software developments include interactive data and output manipulation, graphical representation of output, internal checks on input parameters to preset ranges and subroutines which calculate the gas distribution throughout the network from known gas sources. Hardware advances have led to significant increases in memory to facilitate the analysis of large ventilation models, math co-processor chips which greatly shorten run times, and plotter hardware for graphical output displays. Recent software developments make it possible to graphically display output on printers faster than on standard plotters.

The method of coal pillar design involves primarily two aspects, the geometry of the pillar and the strength of the coal. However, the strength of the coal has to be emphasized with respect to the entire pillar dimension rather than isolated strength values of coal samples taken and measured from different locations. The presently applied pillar design systems do not specify clearly what the coal sample strength really represents. The intention of this paper is to introduce the concept of seam strength as opposed to the current practice of using coal strength as a prime design criteria in the formulation of pillar calculations. Seams are most of ten composed of multiple layers of coal, partings, and bone in different configurations, changing within the vertical section of the seam even in relatively close locations. The difference in strength between the weakest and strongest component of the coal seam could be as much as five times or more. An experimental approach based on multiple compressive tests performed on coal samples from the Coalburg and the Warfield seams from Eastern Kentucky was undertaken. The analysis of the results lead to the conclusion that for pillar calculations both the weighted mean of the seam strength and the strength of the weakest stratum should be considered rather than the relatively vague aspect of coal strength The design of pillar dimensions based on the above mentioned aspects should assure a more realistic design performance.

Case Studies in Open Pit Design Using Whittle 4D will be discussing the following four examples: 1) Optimization of process plant design using Whittle 4D as a sizing tool. In this case, the home office and project team had different views of the size of the final project. The home office wanted to reduce the size of the project to reduce capital expenditure, while the project team suggested a larger project. Whittle 4D was used to determine Net Present Value and Internal Rate of Return using the Whittle scheduler (FDAN) to schedule many alternatives, and calculate the NPV and return for each alternative. 2) Comparison of pit optimization methods: Lerchs-Grossman vs floating cone. Many pits are developed based on floating cone economics. A comparison of methods in one large gold mine resulted in the stripping ratio of the pit being reduced by 10% in the Whittle 4D optimization as compared to the floating cone optimization. 3) Pit optimization to determine if a new mill is justified. A large heap leach gold and silver mine needed to determine if a new mill was justified. The planning and scheduling would take several man months if completed without pit optimization and scheduling software. Whittle 4D software proved to be very effective in providing optimized pits and a mine schedule in a short time frame. 4) Pit optimization to determine how to mine and size. Open pit optimization determined where the underground operation should start, and whether the material should be processed by milling or heap leaching. One of our clients asked for help in determining where the pit should end and a new underground operation start. We used Whittle 4D to help determine where the pit should end and where to go underground. In addition the operation needed to determine how to process the material.

In the ten years since its discovery the Lac Tio ilmenite-hematite deposit has become one of the world's largest sources of titanium ore. The deposit lies 25 miles north Havre St, Pierre, a fishing village on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River some 400 miles northeast of Quebec City. In 1941, J, A, Retty made a reconnaissance survey of the region for the Quebec Department of Mines. His results, published in 1942 and 1944, described a number of small ilmenite occurrences on the shores of four lakes within the area. Several of these were staked by Montreal and Toronto interests, Two of the claim groups were later optioned by Kennco Explorations, (Canada) Ltd, and a third by the New Jersey Zinc Company, During a detailed exploration program in 1946, Kennco geologists discovered eight ilmenite deposits, one of which was Lac Tio, the largest known body of ilmenite-hematite ore in the world. Quebec Iron and Titanium Corporation owned two-thirds by Kennecott and one-third by The New Jersey Zinc Company as organized in 1948 to equip and operate the new mining property. A railroad 27 miles in length was built (completed in 1950) to transport the ore to the St. Lawrence River at Havre St. Pierre, An electric furnace treatment plant, yielding a high purity iron and slag containing 70 m 75 percent Ti02, to process the ore was built at Sorel, Quebec, 550 miles up the river from Havre St. Pierre.

The process design of a metallurgical plant follows logical steps, one built on another, to define the circuit requirements. The methodology used and documentation produced is the same for a pre-feasibility study, feasibility study or a complete design, regardless of the process complexity or the commodity. The only difference is the amount of detail developed at each stage. SRK Consulting, an independent, international consulting practice that provides focused advice and solutions to clients, mainly from earth and water resource industries, has consulted on many mining projects around the world. The company was formed in 1974 and now employs more than 1,600 professionals in more than 50 offices on six continents. According to SRK experts, the first element in plant design is collecting metallurgical testwork or operating data from an existing plant. The testwork identifies the process, the metallurgical recoveries and product qualities and establishes the process parameters for economic recovery of the commodity. Test samples must represent both the whole orebody and the feed over the life of the mine, showing the mineral?s variability. With this data available, the process design can be developed.

The mining method at the Cannon Mine uses heading and bench stopes, which are subsequently backfilled with cemented high-strength fill prior to pillar removal. The dimensions of the pillars, 24 feet wide by G5 to 95 feet high, re-quire careful blasting in order to not damage the rock, compromising pillar strength and complicating later removal. Additionally, the proximity of dwellings makes vibration control a must for good-neighbor relations. A blast monitoring study was conducted in order to optimize bench blasting practices to maximize fragmentation, reduce costs, minimize well damage, and minimize ground vibration.

For new coal-fired power plants, federal regulations require that emissions of sulfur dioxide be limited to 1.2 pounds for every million BTU'S burned. This is equivalent to coal with a sulfur content of roughly 0.7 percent for Eastern bituminous coals and roughly 0.6 percent for Western sub-bituminous coals. The states and their political subdivisions are free to apply more stringent standards and to develop implementation plans covering existing and new units. Most Western-sub-bituminous coals contain less than 1% sulfur and hence their use, in many cases, will allow a utility to meet the regulations. However, there are problems in using such coals in furnaces designed for Eastern bituminous coals, and furthermore it will take many years to open mines and provide transportation facilities to utilities which are now burning coals with a higher sulfur content. Moreover, pending federal legislation would outlaw strip mining on land to which the federal government owns the mining rights. Those utilities who, for one reason or another, intend to continue burning Eastern bituminous coals with sulfur contents in excess of 1 percent are faced with removing SO2 from the stack gases. The alternative of utilizing coal gasification where the sulfur is removed prior to burning in a power plant is still in the early stages of development. Therefore, a large number of processes are under development for SO2 control.

As more phosphate deposits are discovered and new mines are developed, the necessity of critically evaluating various rocks for phosphoric acid production recurs ever more frequently. This need is accentuated by the increasing number of, fertilizer plants being constructed on deep water at various locations to serve world markets and to take advantage of locally-available sulfur or sulfur-bearing ores. A major proportion of all phosphate rock mined is consumed by wet-process plants and this acid in turn is consumed, usually captively, in the manufacture of fertilizer. It is apparent, therefore, that the first question asked by the developer of a new deposit is - How will it work in a wet-process plant? and conversely, when developing a deep water, project, one of the early studies required is - Which of the available rocks shall we use? The disposal of phosphatic clays has presented a problem to the phosphate industry since the mining of phosphate rock first began. As the flotation process was introduced in the late 1920's, the problem of clay disposal was increased significantly since clay is present in proportionally greater quantities in reserves yielding flotation concentrates. Because of their physical character and the tremendous surface area per unit volume, these clays have the characteristic of retaining large volumes of water as they are slurried during processing. The phosphatic clays with which we are dealing consist primarily of apatite, wavellite and montmorillonite. In the beneficiation process, we remove the -150 mesh material as waste. However, the particles are essentially smaller than -325 mesh, and more than 70% are smaller than three microns. The disposal of clay and the recovery of a portion of the water require settling areas with a capacity ranging up to 2 cubic feet for each cubic foot of phosphate matrix mined. According to a recent study by the Bureau of Mines, the average cost for disposal of these wastes is 24.5 cents per ton of, product (U. S. Bureau of Mines Circular 8404). This is a major cost of phosphate rock production.

ERIC GUTIERREZ: With that, we'll go ahead with the final speaker of the day, Andrew Neale. Andrew has a master's of science degree in mineral processing from the University of Alberta. He worked at the Falconbridge in Sudbury area, also at Brenda Mines, and then he became part of the Brenda Process Technology group in British Columbia. He joined Freeport in late 1993 in Indonesia, and was involved in process control and automation. He is now the senior manager of metallurgy in New Orleans. He's responsible for designing Freeport's new 100,000-ton-per-day expansion concentrator, which is currently being commissioned. Please welcome Andrew. ANDREW NEALE: With the ongoing explosion in digital computing power, there seems to be no limit to what can be modeled, simulated, and controlled in the mineral processing plant. However, at each stage of development of a control system, it is necessary to complete a cost-benefit analysis for justifying the move to a higher level of control. Incremental improvements in plant performance, while often significant, must be weighed against the costs of implementation and long-term maintenance. This presentation will provide examples of what the author believes are misplaced or misguided process control efforts and make a case for the KISS principle as applied to process control.

This presentation we hope will provide you with an orderly approach co mine and surface plant closure taken from our experience over the past several years on six different projects within the intermountain states. There is no magic to the approach. It is basic common sense and yet it is interesting how many of the specific details are overlooked due to the individual complexity of each site. Our attempt here is to share some of the issues that have confronted us on these six sites. Please recognize that it is impossible to be all inclusive. Of the six sites we have drawn from; two are mine, mill and smelter sites dating back to pre-1900, one is an industrial site dating back to the early 1900s, two are mill and concentrator sites dating from the late 1940s and one is a mining district site dating from the late 1800s.

A recent Nevada Gold Mines research program focused on the pressure oxidation (POx) pretreatment of a Carlin-type double refractory ore from the Turquoise Ridge Mine. The research team found that both arsenian pyrite and carbonaceous matter were highly oxidized within an hour at 300 °C using a bench-top autoclave reactor and that the gold recovery from the residues after cyanide/carbon-in-leach (CIL) approached the technical limit set by the amount of gold encapsulated by silicate minerals. Although the 60-min pretreatment at 300 °C yields robust performance when treating a whole ore, copper additives can catalyze the oxidation rate of carbonaceous matter and reduce the residence time needed at elevated temperatures. Certain gangue minerals are susceptible to dissolution in acidic solutions at 300 °C, and this may cause poor gold recovery. This recovery challenge is mitigated by keeping free acid in the discharge solution below a key threshold.

Rising electricity costs in South Africa have resulted in a need for optimized compressed-air networks in the mining environment. As a result, the financial benefit of air receivers needs to be reconsidered along with the economic dispatch strategy. This study investigates the use of an evolutionary algorithm in the mining industry to determine the potential financial benefit for various-sized air receivers, as well as their dispatch strategy. A genetic algorithm was selected due to the improved solution reliability and accuracy compared to other optimization techniques. This study indicates that a genetic algorithm can be used to determine the optimal dispatch of compressed air in the deep-level mining industry. Further, this study indicates that air receivers are financially viable in the mining industry and can be used to reduce operating costs, improving profitability.

Tailings and/or wastewater generated from gold extraction plants employing cyanida­ tion must often be treated to remove the cyanides and heavy metals for environmental reasons and/or gold extraction inhibition reasons, due to the presence of heavy metals like copper, which have a detrimen­ tal effect during cyanidation. In recent years, the treatment of effluents contain­ ing cyanides and heavy metals has been widely studied, Among chemical treatment methods, the use of hydrogen peroxide has been universally employed as a viable option. However, in some cases, effluents containing high concentrations of heavy metals and/or solids decompose the hydrogen peroxide, an undesirable side reaction. The addition of stabilizers or other peroxygen compounds together with hydrogen peroxide can, however, considerably reduce the rate of decomposition and thus result in detoxi­ fication costs, which are considerably less than the standard detoxification process using hydrogen peroxide. In some cases, the reaction rate can also be increased, resul­ ting in lower investment costs for new detoxification plants. This paper deals with the results of developmental work performed in the recent past and introduces some new processes with the aim of optimizing reagent consumption and costs.

The United States is the world's largest producer of hydrofluoric acid (HF), with its 1971 output of 317,000 short tons representing about 40 percent of the estimated Free World production. U. S. production has increased over five fold in the past 20 years, with a growth rate of about 7 percent per year between 1960 and 1970. However, the growth rate to 1977 is expected to be less than 5 percent per year, due primarily to a reduced rate of growth in requirements by the aluminum industry and an expected increase in imports from Canada and Mexico. This discussion will include our analyses of the consumption pattern for HF in 1972 and the factors influencing the demand forecast for 1977.

The concept of "classification is expanded beyond the performance of the classifying equipment to include all aspects of the fines removal system of the grinding circuit. Design and operating parameters which affect fines removal are identified and discussed, and a quantitative index for circuit fines removal effectiveness is defined. This approach lends new interpretation to certain observed phenomena, and suggests useful guidelines for circuit design and operation.

Consolidation Coal Company, through the mining research division of Continental Oil Company, is now undertaking the installation of a full-scale hydraulic transportation system to carry coarse coal from the mine face to the preparation plant. The facility will include all elements of a fully integrated haulage system including face haulage for both longwall and continuous miner sections, multiple slurry feeds, hydraulic hoisting and 2.4 miles of overland slurry transport. This undertaking is a result of more than six years of extensive research and testing, some of which has been previously releasted to the literature. To provide a reference framework for system description, a brief history of recent coal mining technological developments will be discussed. Following World War II, mechanization resulted in mining machines that were bigger, faster, more powerful, and more reliable. These changes were essentially refinements in an established mining system. They made mining more efficient than before, but they did not change the system itself. By about the mid-1960's, it was apparent that further improvements in the extraction machinery would have a declining payoff, simply because .the worst bottlenecks were in other components of the mining system. A modern continuous miner cannot be run continuously because other operations underground cannot keep pace. In fact, most continuous miners today run at less than 20% of capacity. Consequently, in 1969 Consol and its parent company, Continental Oil, undertook a long-range R&D program to try to change the basic haulage system for the better. Most coal at present is removed from the mine by a hand-off system in which the coal is transferred from the continuous miner to a shuttle car, often with the aid of a separate loader; then from the shuttle car to a system of conveyor belts; and finally from the conveyors to rail cars. The system involves a large amount of moving equipment underground, many transfer points, and the everpresent chance of operational delays and safety hazards. By removing the haulage bottleneck, we believe we can speed up underground operations substantially; and perhaps more important, we could make it feasible to develop a whole new generation of mining equipment that is inherently safer. What we wanted was a truly flexible, continuous haulage system with inherent safety advantages. Ideally the system had to meet three major requirements: First, the coal had to enter the transport system at the face, and remain in that same system all the way to the preparation plant. Second, the system had to be flexible and extensible so that it could- follow the mining machine as it advances and retracts. And, third, the system must be inherently safer than current haulage technology.
