"Knowledge of the abrasion resistance of aggregates is important when using them for asphalt and concrete mixes and highway construction materials. In this study, the usability of natural building stone waste as aggregates for different engineering applications was investigated. To this end, test samples were obtained from a number of natural stone quarries and stone cutting factories. The abrasion tests were carried out on the test samples and results were compared between samples. The abrasion strength values were determined with both the Micro-Deval (MDe) and the Los Angeles (LA) abrasion test methods. A correlation coefficient was also determined between the LA and MDe tests results using an appropriate statistical model.Introduction The rapid consumption of natural resources has led researchers to work on the efficient utilization of such resources. To this end one can convert waste into useful raw materials, or determine alternative uses of the industrial waste materials. This has become increasingly important as storing or dumping waste may result in environmental problems. In addition, the use of industrial waste in a different application of the construction industry prevents rapid consumption of limited natural resources and can mitigate environmental problems related to raw material production, Industrial waste such as blast furnace slag, fly ash, building demolition material, marble waste and dismantled asphalt have been used as highway and concrete materials (Ahmed 1993, Ramaswamy and Aziz 1992, Schroeder 1994, Ceylan and Manca 2013, Holtz and Eighmy 2000, Hebhoub et al 2011). It is very important to analyze whether these aggregates are of the required quality in terms of their application and their economic life. This analysis can be carried out using various tests such as the Micro-Deval and the Los Angeles abrasion tests, sieve analysis, durability chemical resistance, peeling and adhesion, and freezing-thawing tests (Erdem et al 1996). Specifications for aggregates also include terms that define the grain shape, cleanliness and surface textures."

Belt conveyors have proven themselves for many years as a dependable and low cost method of handling bulk materials at high flow rates. The success of a belt conveyor system greatly depends on the initial loading of the material on the belt. If the material is loaded on the belt at the center, at approximately the same speed and with minimum impact, then most of all belt conveyor problems disappear. Proper belt loading is primarily determined by the engineering and design of the conveyor transfer point. This paper will establish and discuss some general design criteria required for proper loading and transfer of materials from one conveyor to another. Specific attention is given to loading points, chutes, skirt board length and general design of transfer structures.

In this paper, an effort was made to get more in-sight about the parameters that can affect air sparging technique optimization. Numerical simulations were used in predicting the effects of different parameters utilizing Shell?s in house MoRes simulator. The case of using air sparging to remediate source zone is considered in this work. Different air injection scenarios using continuous and pulsed air injection techniques, with different frequencies and durations, were compared. The amount of MTBE mass removed from the saturated zone and arrived to the ground surface, through the vadose zone, was the main criterion while comparing different air injection scenarios. The simulations results showed that pulsed air injection is better than continuous air injection in removing the MTBE and that the longer the OFF time is the better the MTBE removal.

The authors present laboratory and plant results illustrating the benefits to be gained by using chemical additives, namely flocculants and surfactant dewatering aids, in the Bayer process. Advantages of synthetic flocculants over starch are illustrated in terms of more efficient solid/liquid separation in both the initial settling of blow-down slurries and in the CCD wash train. In addition, it is shown that the use of synthetic flocculants considerably reduce the levels of organic contaminants present in the process liquor. Secondly, very significant improvements in moisture removal were obtained by the application of dewatering aids to hydrate filtration/ washing operations.

In previous reports by Hausel et. al., (1979 a, b, and c), Leighton and McCallum (1979), and McCallum (1974;1979), several exploration procedures were examined as to their effectiveness in locating kimberlite intrusives in northern Colorado and southeastern Wyoming, where approximately 90 kimberlites have been recognized within 5 districts (Figure I). Briefly, geological mapping and stream sediment sampling for indic- ative heavy minerals of kimberlite (pyrope garnet, chrome diopside, and magnesian ilmenite) proved to be the two most effective methods in isolating kimberlite occurrences within the granitic terrain of Colorado and Wyoming (Hausel et. al., 1979 a, b, and c; Leighton and McCallum, 1979). Where a kimberlite intrusive is deeply weathered, remote sensing using color and color infrared aerial photography may be a potential reconnaissance tool in kimberlite exploration. The kimberlitic eluvium supports thicker grassy vegetation, and at least one species of grass (the Bluebunch Wheatgrass) is found to grow only within the eluvium. The result is that vegetation in the kimberlitic eluvium is a better infrared reflector than the vegetation in the surrounding granitic soils (Hausel et. al., 1979 b; McCallum, 1974

Most magnesia (MgO), whether of natural or synthetic origin, is used in the dead-burned or periclase form as refractory linings for the production of steel. Continued research in refractory science, combined with good refractory maintenance and improvements in steel-making processes, have resulted in decreased use of magnesia. To make up for this loss of business, producers of synthetic magnesia have started to manufacture a variety of magnesium-based chemicals that are used in many industries. There are three primary methods of producing MgO. The first involves the calcination of naturally occurring minerals species. Most of the magnesia produced by this method uses the rhombohedra1 carbonate mineral magnesite, MgCO,. To a lesser extent, the mineral brucite, Mg(OH), is calcined to magnesia. Magnesia produced by the calcination of minerals is called natural magnesia. The second production method uses magnesium-rich brines, or sea water reacting with lime or calcined dolomite to produce magnesium hydroxide. The magnesium hydroxide is subsequently calcined to magnesia. Material produced in this way is called synthetic magnesia. The third major method of production uses saline lake brines to produce magnesium chloride. Magnesium chloride brine is sprayed into a reactor where it thermally decomposes into MgO and HCl. The magnesia is purified by slaking to magnesium hydroxide followed by calcination. Magnesia produced in this manner is also know as synthetic magnesia (Duncan and McKracken, 1994). The degree to which the magnesium minerals or the synthetically prepared magnesium hydroxide is calcined governs the physical properties of the resulting MgO. It is the physical properties that dictate the end use for the product. The terms used to describe magnesia vary along with the degree of calcination. Table 1 summarizes the terminology used when discussing the various forms of magnesium oxide.

The success of a mineral separation is commonly assessed from the separation curve, a graph of the recoveries achieved versus the corresponding separator settings. Two values characterize the curve, first the "splitpoint" which is the separator setting that produces a recovery of 50%, and second a measure for the separation sharpness. The splitpoint represents the "mean" while the measure for the separation sharpness represents the "scatter". In modelling the performance of crossflow separations the mean particle behavior is calculated from the force equilibrium that determines the particle trajectory which leads to a deterministic model. The scatter is then represented by a stochastic model. This presentation discusses the modeling of a crossflow separation and some implications with separation theory. The model is shown to successfully predict the performance of a magnetogravimetric separator.

I'm really very pleased to be talking with you today about the environmental impacts of gold ore processing as part of this symposium on emerging process technologies for a cleaner environment. But before I talk about some of the newer developments that are coming, I would like to set the stage by reviewing some of the recent past. Over the last decade or so the U.S. gold mining industry has experienced remarkable growth, primarily in heap leaching operations, and not surprisingly there has been parallel growth of environmental regulations. At Homestake, we have had the excitement of bringing on-line a new mine embodying state-of-the-art technology and environmental planning, and during the same period the flagship of our company, the Homestake mine, has been brought into modern day compliance through the application of innovative environmental technology. This has been a learning process; in both cases we found that we had to develop new ways to meet our objectives. At our McLaughlin mine in California a major achievement was pioneering the use of pressure oxidation, or autoclaves, for refractory gold ores, and at the Homestake it was the development of a unique bio-treatment plant for wastewater. These projects were developed balancing operational goals, environmental concerns and costs, and I would submit that being cost-effective is our greatest challenge in the development of new, environmentally sound, process technology. In meeting that challenge, our job has not been made any easier by the myriad environmental laws and regulations that directly affect the design and operation of our facilities. Most of these constraints have evolved through the political process more or less independently, but in their application there often are over-lapping provisions. Adding to this complexity is the fact that action takes place in both state and federal arenas. As a result, state and federal roles sometimes become intertwined, and a good case in point is provided by various cyanide issues faced by gold producers. The vast majority of U.S. gold mining takes place in the so-called "mineral States," the western States that come under the Mining Law of 1872 as amended. This is the basic statute that provides for access and tenure to develop mineral resources on federal lands in those states. There is gold mining outside the defined mineral States, and there is also gold mining in the mineral States on private lands. Our own Homestake mine in South Dakota is one of the best examples of the latter category: located entirely on private land, it is nevertheless subject to at least 13 federal environmental statutes and some 29 federal regulatory requirements. There are also nine significant state statutory and regulatory requirements that apply. On federal lands in the mineral States there are numerous federal statutes and regulations which affect mining, over and above the current Mining Law. These, which are in addition to the laws applying to private land, include the National Environmental Protection Act and the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, among others. Still, those who advocate radical changes in the basic Mining Law would have us believe that sweeping environmental protection and reclamation provisions, not to mention new land use restrictions, are needed. Such changes could effectively prohibit mining on the federal public lands. Strict enforcement of our current Mining Law would have presented most of the abuses cited by the critics but if the Law is to be changed at all, I believe that, at a minimum, the principles of self-initiation and security of tenure embodied in the present statute should be maintained. These are critically important concepts, but there are other statutory and regulatory issues constantly before us as gold miners. Determining the identicalness levels of the same model trucks working in open pit mine transportation system by means of statistical analysis methods is very significant in terms of availability analysis. In this study, the identicalness levels of two trucks picked randomly from the 170-short-tonne truck fleet working in open pit coal mine over one-year period were examined through a non-parametric test, Mann-Whitney U test for two samples. Time to failures (TTFs) and Time to Repairs (TTRs) of the trucks were analyzed with this test technique and then whether they were identical or not was determined. In order to determine whether the trucks identified to be identical at the end of this test displayed the same mining performances within the same open pit transportation system, the availability analysis of the identical trucks was carried out. As a result of the availability analysis, it was observed that the trucks had availability values that were very close to each other. It was also determined that Mann-Whitney U test could be employed together with availability analysis. Finally, it was observed that Mann-Whitney U test for two samples could yield rapid results in the performance analysis of complex systems like open pit mines.

The evolution of open-pit mining has been rapid during the last two decades. The development of larger, more productive and efficient equipment has been one of the key factors in this open-pit advancement. Selection of the proper equipment and its correct usage is paramount to successful operation while maximizing return on investment. The quantity of material being moved prior to mining the saleable product is increasing at a significant rate. For example, at a southwestern copper mine more than two hundred million tons of over- burden have been removed prior to exposing an ore which contains less than 1% copper. A recent survey of twenty-three Western Hemisphere copper mines reveals the average strippingratio was 2.2:l with a range of 0.9-8.5:l. In the face of increased mineral demand, the resulting technological developments and rising overburden to ore ratios, many open-pit mines now use totally different concepts for the removal of ore and overburden. An increasing number of these concepts now being installed include wheel tractor scrapers as a major part of the material handling system for unconsolidated overburden removal. To say scrapers move only unconsolidated overburden is incorrect. On the contrary, ripped phosphate rock, copper ore, iron ore, and moderately consolidated overburden are also being moved by scrapers in various areas of the world. As reported in the Minerals Year- book, however, about one-half of the material moved in metal and non-metal mines is never drilled and blasted or broken by other means. We will, therefore, in this paper, concentrate on the role of wheel tractor scrapers in unconsolidated overburden; the area of greatest usage.

The Potomac River Tunnel (PRT) is the next major phase of the DC Clean Rivers Program. The design-build PRT project includes a 5.5-mile-long, 18-foot-internaldiameter tunnel, seven shafts, and two underground connections to existing structures. Major challenges include tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavation though mixed-face conditions within a buried paleo-channel and an approximately 1,350-foot-long rock/ soil transition zone; construction beneath the elevated Whitehurst Freeway; tunneling beneath an existing luxury residential building and existing transit tunnels with limited clearance; and complex coordination with a variety of federal, regional, and local stakeholders. This paper describes the overall project scope, geotechnical conditions along the alignment, and primary design/construction challenges and mitigations.

Tailings originating from the gravity concentration of a gold ore containing about 14 g/t Au have been treated by various beneficiation methods. These tailings have been screened on the 147 and 74 micron sieves and the two coarsest fractions have been separated on shaking tables with unsatisfactory results, but the concentrates have been examined in polished sections for mineragraphic analysis. Very simple flotation flowsheets have been applied to collect most of the gold, recovery and grade varying with the regrinding time in a ball mill. Cyanidation tests have shown that this type of treatment is also applicable to such tailings.

In conventional electrolytic copper production, looped copper starter sheets, on which the copper is deposited, are supported by hard-drawn copper bars. These bars have cross-sectional areas of between 1 and 1.4 in2. The suspension bars serve two purposes: firstly to support the cathode, which can weigh up to 150 kg, and secondly to introduce the electric current. IYI examined these two requirements in detail to see whether a better design could be achieved. Considering firstly the current carrying requirement, it wee noted that under normal refinery conditions, each cathode carries between 400 and soak. If one applies the generally accepted rule that 1 in of copper can carry 1000A4 a suspension bar need theoretically contain only 1/2 in2 of copper. This contention is supported by the fact that the 500A current passed through the cathode also appears to pass quite satisfactorily through the two support loops, which have a cross-sectional area of approximately 0.35 in 2. Turning now to the strength requirements, the cross-section of hard-drawn copper bar required to support a 150 kg cathode is relatively small, and easily met by the present designs. It is not, however, the static load applied by the 150 kg cathode immersed in the electrolyte which causes the damage to the hard-drawn copper, or even the increased static load of a 100 kg man standing on one foot in the centre of the bar; the damage is actually caused by the dynamic loads applied to the bare when they are dropped, thrown into containers, lowered too rapidly into the cell, or otherwise mistreated. The important requirement is therefore that the bar does not permanently bend. Its proof stress of limit of proportionality, rather than the amount that it deflects under static loading, should be the strength criterion. With the hard-drawn copper normally used for the manufacture of suspension bars, it has been observed that the copper becomes annealed during use, particularly at the end of the bar where the current is introduced. Thus, after a relatively short time, the cathodes are in effect being supported by annealed copper bars.

The abstract discusses the issue of mine equipment fires caused by hot surface ignition of flammable liquids. The research investigates the ignition probability of liquid fuels (diesel, engine oil, hydraulic fluid) on different metal surfaces (stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel) under various ventilation speeds. The results show that the type of metal and ventilation speed influence the ignition temperature, with diesel being the most easily ignited fuel and carbon steel requiring a higher ignition temperature. The study provides data for understanding equipment mine fires and developing mitigation strategies.

Increasing costs, falling grades and a low gold price have caused severe problems for many of South Africa's gold mines. The need to maximise efficiency is extremely urgent. This paper describes the use of column flotation cell s to scavenge significant quantities of additional gold from flotation plant residues; in particular, very fine particles of free gold not recovered by conventional flotation. Experimental gold- specific collectors enhanced gold recovery significantly. The paper also reports the results of other plant trials, carried out on a variety of ores.

Abstract The consumption of barytes in certain paints polyurethane foams, seamless, flooring, glass, brake linings, plastisol caskets for food containers and in fluids used for gastrointestinal X-ray examinations rely on tie unique properties of barium sulfate, There are no readily available mineral substitutes. Barytes are also the essential raw material for the manufacture of industrially important barium chemicals. High quality barite ore has become scarce throughout the world. Processing ore into quality end products is both capital and energy intensive. These factors have tended to limit availability and increase prices which have encouraged the use of alternates and restricted market growth.

When paraffinic gases (ethane, propane, butane) are used as the gas phase in flotation systems, the initial rate of flotation and recovery are generally increased as compared with air. The mechanism of the effect of paraffinic gases in flotation was studied and it was shown that they co-adsorb with the collector ions on the mineral-aqueous solution interface. The effect of this co-adsorption was interpreted in terms of apparent increase of the effective chain length of the collector by the co-adsorbed gas. Adsorption densities, contact angles and flotation behaviour were studied on the following systems: a) Quartz - dodecyl ammonium chloride - ethane and propane b) Calcite - sodium oleate - propane and butane. The positive effect of the co-adsorbed gases is a maximum at low collector concentrations or where critical conditions for flotation with air prevail.

The effect of face resistance on ventilation air leakage through stoppings was measured in a twin development heading. Face resistance was varied by alternately tightening or loosening the face line brattice to change the line brattice leakage. Results indicated that tight brattice lines are necessary to maintain acceptable airflow at the face but result in higher leakage throughout the entire system, reduced overall ventilation efficiency, and higher operating costs. Conversely, a low face resistance which simulated an auxiliary fan/duct system gave reduced stopping leakage losses, higher quantities of air at the last open cross-cut and greater entire system efficiencies

The intensity of environmental conflict, the delays and legal battles that have marked the 1970's suggest the need for additional processes to resolve environmental disputes. Our present means frequently fail to address the real issues separating individuals and institutions. They are primarily adversary processes that foster polarization and reduce cooperative efforts. At the Office of Environmental Mediation, we have no quarrel with adversary processes nor with polarization, for both serve as important spurs to necessary change. We do seek cooperation among parties at a point where there can be a realistic expectation of success in facilitating a resolution of their mutual differences.
