In this paper several leaching tests were per-formed to optimize the leaching section of a hydrometallurgical process for the recycling of alkaline and zinc-carbon batteries. Zinc and manganese oxides were dissolved by an acidic-reductive leaching using sulphuric acid and oxalic acid as reductant. Leaching tests were developed according to a full factorial design. The operational variables were pulp percentage, sulphuric acid concentration, temperature and oxalic acid concentration. Additional tests were performed to evaluate the precipitation rate of Mn and Zn oxalates. Finally a hydrometallurgical process were proposed for the recycling of alkaline and zinc-carbon batteries, in which Zn and MnO2 are recovered from purified solution by electrowinning: Zn is recovered as metallic compound, while Mn can be recovered as electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD), but recovery of further manganese compounds is possible with simple process changes.

The City of Toronto’s Coxwell Bypass Tunnel is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors ULC, a joint venture of Jay Dee Canada, C&M McNally Tunnel Constructors and Michels Canada. This project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five 20 meter diameter storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. This paper describes progress on the project to date and reviews the risk mitigation measures utilized on the project to move the project forward through tough geological conditions during shaft excavation and tunneling phase of the project.

The 1980s saw a revolution in gold extraction technology, paralleled only by the implementation of the cyanide leaching process in the late 1800s. This revolution was led by the widespread adoption of carbon adsorption processes for gold recovery, heap leaching of low-grade ores and development of a variety of oxidation processes to treat refractory ores. In the late 1980s, gold production in almost all regions of the world increased, with the notable exception of South Africa. This geographical variety is creating a greater diversity of challenges for gold metallurgists. This is due to a wider range of ore types, new and varied environmental regulations and legislation, and a requirement to select the most appropriate technology to suit local needs. North America has led this technological revolution in the gold industry and is responsible for commercialization of most of the major innovations: carbon-in-pulp, heap leaching, whole ore pressure oxidation and whole ore roasting. Process selection trends A general trend in precious metals extraction technology has been the treatment of ores with progressively lower grades. The lowest cost treatment, dump leaching of material at run-of-mine size, has been increasingly applied. ZortmanLandusky, in Montana, is successfully leaching material above a cutoff grade of 0.2 g/t (0.006 oz/st) at an average rate of about 28 kt/d (31,000 stpd). At this scale of operation and in the absence of any cyanide-consuming species in the ore, process operating costs for a ge¬neric run-of-mine leaching operation are estimated to be between 60 and 75 cents/ t (66 and 77 cents/st). One of the largest heap leach opera¬tions treating crushed ore is the Round Mountain Mine in Nevada. It processes about 45 kt/d (49,000 stpd) at an average grade of 1.1 g/t (0.032 oz/st) at a nomi¬nal crush size of 80% -19 mm (-0.7 in.). Round Mountain also treats lower grade ore above a 0.2 g/t (0.006 oz/st) cutoff by dump leaching at run-of-mine size.

Many of you are familiar with the Washington Metro Project. However, inasmuch as some may not be, and others may want to refresh their memories regarding certain facets of the project, I will cite a few summary details about the rail transit system we are constructing. That summary will also give each of us a common point for departure as I develop the principal thoughts that I want to leave with you. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is an interstate agency established by Compact between the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia and approved by the United States Congress. Currently, the Authority has approval to build and operate a 101-mile (162.5 km) regional rapid rail transit system as shown on Appendix A. Of that total, 38 miles (61.2 km) will be in D. C., 32 miles (51.5 km) in Maryland and 30 miles (48.3 km) in Virginia. (Mileage figures, because of rounding error, do not add to 101 miles.) Referring again to the 101-mile total, 48 miles (77.2 km) will be underground, 42 miles (67.6 km) on the surface and 10 miles (16.1 km) on aerial structures. Of the 48 miles (77.2 km) that are underground, 15 miles (24.1 km) are rock tunnel, 14 miles (22.5 km) are earth tunnel, 0.5 miles (0.8 km) 9.s sunken tube and 19 miles (30.6 inn) are cut-and-cover construction. The system will include 86 stations, with 51 of them underground. Referring again to the full 86 stations, 43 will be in D. C., 23 in Maryland and 20 in Virginia. We currently have 37 miles (59.5 km) of line and 41 stations in operations as shown on Appendix B. Construction of the 5,932-ft Reedy River Basin Sewer Tunnel in Greenville, SC was marked by a critical transition from drill-and-blast mining in mixed-face conditions to TBM excavation with limited rock coverage. In this paper, we discuss the geological, geotechnical, and risk management considerations for transitioning to TBM operations in variably weathered gneissic bedrock. After construction of an unexpected 230-ft starter tunnel due to differing site conditions, the 11-ft diameter TBM was successfully launched in December 2019 without significant ground support issues. This project highlights the effectiveness of extensive rock probing to fully characterize bedrock topography prior to the TBM launch.

Deep well disposal of selected industrial wastes has been proved feasible and acceptable in the New Orleans area by several industries including Shell Oil Company's Norco Refinery and Chemical Plant where three of the six successful disposal wells in this area are operating. Well design and procedures for restoration of capacity are based, in most cases, on the principles of brine injection developed by oil producers in South Louisiana. Geological formations in the Gulf Coast area are suited to this type of injection because receiving strata are porous, isolated from sources of potable water and their water is compatible with the liquid wastes to be injected. This method of disposal is a simple, complete and economical solution to the problems presented by certain hard to treat wastes.

An accurate knowledge of the interactions among mineral particles and between such particles and dissolved and precipitated species is important in developing efficient separation processes. In this investigation, interactions relevant to dispersion and selective reagent adsorption (the two main prerequisites for selective flocculation) within Florida phosphatic clay Waste were studied. Initial studies with artificial slimes, consisting of pure clay and phosphate minerals, showed dispersion of artificial slimes to be relatively easy. The problems that were encountered during selective flocculation of the artificial slimes were due to unselective polyacrylic acid adsorption on clay, which was caused by the presence of multivalent calcium ions on the exchangeable cation positions on the clay surfaces. This problem could be solved by exchanging calcium for sodium, which reduces the interaction between the polymer and the clay surface. This procedure, however, was not successful for mineral mixtures. Natural slimes were found to be much more difficult to disperse. This was attributed to the presence of cementing materials such as humic substances and Al and Fe (hydr)oxide precipitates. Selective removal of these cementing materials resulted in good dispersion and partial separation. A further increase in the separation of natural slimes is most likely determined by the presence of calcium on the clay surfaces, as was found for the artificial mixtures.

"A commercially available Through-the-Earth (TTE) communications system was evaluated at an underground coal mine in eastern Kentucky. This field study was conducted as part of a larger multi-site evaluation of available TTE systems to determine their operational sensitivity. Field testing is being performed along with simulation techniques developed for geophysical surveys. The results of the field test will additionally be used to determine the applicability of these simulation techniques to TTE communications. The mine detailed in this paper was idled at the time of the study, which provided the nearest practical representation of a post-event mine shutdown. For this study, the three following communication modes were tested: surface-to-underground, underground-to-surface and surface-to-surface. Standard deployments of the TTE system using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures were able to achieve clear communications between underground and surface locations. Other arrangements of the units yielded intriguing results, some of which were predicted by computer simulations, others were unexpected. Future experimentation is planned to further evaluate the observed phenomena. INTRODUCTION The ability to establish effective communication between surface and underground personnel after a mine event is essential for both mine evacuation and mine rescue efforts. Current communication technology is reliant on physical infrastructure, such as antennas, cables, and repeaters, located throughout the mine. Such systems are easily disabled during a mine event because of their vulnerability to physical damage. A true emergency communications system would have the ability to function regardless of a mine’s physical state. Through-the-Earth (TTE) wireless communications technology has the potential to provide such a tool. Wireless TTE communications are exceptionally challenging because electromagnetic (EM), or radio, signals are subject to drastic attenuation as they travel through solid strata. In addition to attenuation, EM wave propagation is directly affected by the physical and petrographic characteristics, mineral compositions, metamorphic properties, and the degree of water infiltrations in the strata [1-5]. These strata characteristics are unique to each mine thus making the design of an effective, universally deployable, and reliable TTE communications system very difficult. At present, TTE technology is in the preliminary stages of practical deployment with only a few permissible TTE systems commercially available."

Catalyzed diesel particulate filters (CDPFs) are used for reducing diesel particulate matter (DPM) concentrations in underground mines. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on how catalyzed diesel particulate filters perform. Two CDPFs, with two different catalysts, are used on vehicles in two mines. The CDPFs are periodically removed from service and evaluated in the laboratory to determine their DPM collection efficiency, regeneration temperature, and effects on gaseous hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. This report summarizes the results of the laboratory evaluation, and the mines' experience with the CDPFs. Both CDPFs have operated over 2,000 h. One was evaluated after 1,646 h; its collection efficiency at one operating condition was 87.3 pct. After 2,135 h of operation it was removed from service because it was damaged. The second CDPF continues to be used after 2,328 h of service. The laboratory evaluation indicated its collection efficiency decreased after 1,584 h of use and its regeneration temperature increased from 405' C to 420' C. The mines' experiences with the two CDPFs varied. While being used on mine vehicles, both CDPFs became plugged with DPM on a number of occasions because of insufficient regeneration. CDPFs are capable of lowering DPM concentrations in diesel exhaust. They can also lower emissions of CO and HC, depending on the type of catalyst used. In this study, the performance of the CDPFs changed with use. Recommendations are given in this report for proper use of CDPFs in mines.

During the 1970's geostatisticians were often accused of not paying sufficient attention to geologic features in the computerised generation of ore reserves. Unfortunately this charge was all -too-often justified and the results of such studies tended to be oversimplified and failed to reveal the full potential of computerised reserve estimation and geostatistical methods. There were some notable exceptions to this trend. Techniques were described that paid a great deal of respect to the geologic characteristics peculiar to certain deposits (Rendu J-M, 1984, Barnes T. E., 1982). At Gold Fields several techniques have been developed for handling the geologic characteristics of ore bodies for reserve estimation purposes. These have developed over time and the evolution of their adoption has been a reflection of our own learning experience from the practical application of computerised reserve estimation on many precious metal s deposits. On July 30, 1979 New Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) regulations for implementing the procedural provisions of the decade-old National Environmental Policy Act went into effect. These new regulations replace approximately seventy different sets of agency regulations, providing some uniformity throughout the Federal government in the conduct of environmental reviews and preparation of environmental impact statements (EIS). This attempt by the Federal government at a general improvement in the preparation and quality of EIS's presents an opportunity for the mining industry to evaluate how the EIS process for mining proposals can be expedited. The environmental impact statement is often a key element on the critical path of a major mining project. Preparation of the EIS is ordinarily the responsibility of the Federal agency with primary decision-making authority over the project. Still, the proponent, i.e. the mining company, can play a major role in the process and have a major impact on the timeliness and adequacy of the effort. Typically, the Proponent will conduct (or will hire consultants to conduct) environmental baseline studies of, for example, air quality, wildlife, geology, water quality, vegetation and archaeology. These studies are then compiled into an environmental report and submitted to the agency. The agency verifies the data and incorporates them into the environmental impact statement.

The ventilation of coal mines has long been a major challenge for the mining industry. Prior to the 1969 Health and Safety Act, mine ventilation planning was almost entirely handled by individuals in mine operations and engineering who had extensive practical experience. Their background and expertise was sufficient to deal with existing ventilation problems and planning. A recent decline in the number of qualified individuals combined with more stringent state and federal regulations have necessitated a thorough engineering oriented approach to ventilation in mine planning design. To plan for an existing mine, a thorough ventilation survey must be conducted to determine the capabilities of the existing ventilation network. A ventilation survey also provides considerable useful data for long range planning. Essential information such as friction factors, entry resistance, and potential ventilation problem areas is gained from the survey data. With this information a comprehensive computer analysis can be conducted to evaluate alternative mine plans. This evaluation of mine plans is essential to minimize the number of shafts required while still maintaining the quality of mine ventilation. Using an existing mine as an example, this paper outlines a detailed procedure for organizing, con-ducting, and evaluating a ventilation survey. In addition, specific ventilation problem areas are isolated and alternative methods for their solution are considered. Furthermore, a long range mine plan is evaluated and the most feasible variation of the plan is selected.

Compared to the traditional method of holding coal in railroad cars at the ports for dumping their contents into vessels, it provided for: a. D-LM at Mobile The qualified success of iron ore pelletizing processes has influenced considerations for production of highly beneficiated fur¬nace charges. Such beneficiation would necessarily involve some forms of chemical and perhaps thermal conversion for production of prereduced pellets, preheated pellets, precalcined pellets, and perhaps pellets which contain all of the above features as preheated, prereduced, precalcined products. This type of furnace burden will be adapted within a new ironmaking process to be activated commer¬cially during the latter part of 196$ in Mobile, Alabama. This process will integrate a new pelletizing system with an electric smelting furnace and the pellets will be comprised of a composite charge blended from metallurgical proportions of iron ore, coal, and limestone. High-pressure grinding rolls subject the feed material to pressures of 200 N/mm? During this process considerable size reduction and the Formation of flakes occur. This paper describes the basic consideration For design and operating of this type of mill. It is also shown that the particle size distribution resulting from this process is typical for grinding processes but untypical for crushing processes. High pressure grinding rolls are designed in size of up to 2.8 m roll diameter allowing feed material top sizes of 250 mm. The rigid frame, bearing and drive - train design allows a broad application of the high-pressure grinding rolls operating the machine in open or semi-closed and closed circuit for dry and moist feed materials. Operating results show that capacity increases of up to 100 % can be accomplished with this technology. The high-pressure grinding roll also, allows for lower operating and maintenance costs due to energy savings of up to 20 L and reduction of wear to less than 1 76 for dry and less than 0.1 5 for wet grinding. Other advantages of the high-pressure grinding rolls are smaller equipment sizes than a ball or SAG-mill for a given capacity resulting in lower building sizes with reduced capital in- vestment costs.

Santa Rosa is a mid-Tertiary, volcanic-hosted, gold-silver deposit. Current proven and probable reserves are 8.9 Mt (9.8 million st) grading 1.5 g/t (0.044 oz/ st) gold, minable by open pit and amenable to heap leaching. It is the product of hydrothermal mineralization along an arcuate segment of a caldera collapse ring fault in a probable maar volcanic setting. This segment was later broken by radial faults. Gold at Santa Rosa occurs principally as electrum, finely disseminated through intermediate tuffs, and associated with pyrite. The nearby Alto de la Mina deposit displays stockwork silica-pyrite-gold in a tectonically and hydrothermally shattered andesite flow. Miocene epithermal mineralization was accompanied by central silicification and pyritization and more distal argillization. An andesite flow cap rock at Santa Rosa played a pivotal role as an upward permeability barrier. Highest gold grades and most intense alteration occur closest to the ring faults and immediately beneath the andesite flow. Supergene alteration effects on the gold distribution are minimal.

The first reaction in organizing a project of magnitude is that it's the same as smaller projects -- just bigger. This is not totally correct. The industry's record of completing big-money jobs on time and within budget is not outstanding. From a personal point of view, my question is: What is the project size at which controls are lost? Is it controls? Is it the number of pieces of equipment? Is it the number of decisions to be made? The slowness of communications? Or is it a combination of all of these? In working on multimillion-dollar jobs, the percentage of overrun seems to be lower or show an underrun when the following basics are followed: 1) Preplanning is intensified 2) Data gathering is complete 3) Approach is optimized 4) Planning is realistically scheduled 5) Changes are minimized 6) Decisions are expedited

The lesser developed countries (LDC's) may be classified into two categories: 1) oil producers, and 2) non-oil producers. The non-oil producing LDC's, as a class, are at present in very difficult financial straits. (1) Since the quadrupling of world market crude oil prices in 1972, an ever greater share of the LDC's export earnings have gone to pay for oil imports, in-stead of national reinvestment. The LDC's inter-national debts--much of it to pay for oil--have soared to record levels, with consequent limits for future credits. (1) Again, this inhibits future national investments, and there does not seem to be an end to the future increase of Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) prices. Indeed, some of the economic difficulties in some metal markets--particularly the imbalance of production vs. markets for copper, can be traced indirectly to the OPEC cartels' heavy-handed impact on copper producing LDC's which must produce copper at any price to meet their oil bills. (2) Among the major oil importing LDC's are the Philippines and South Korea. 50th nations have substantial cement industries. The South Korean industry is geared for major export markets in the Far East. Both nations have ambitious plans for economic growth in order to accommodate burgeoning populations with ever increasing expectations for high standards of living. These plans had some success, more or less, until the high OPEC oil cartel charges had to be borne. Now, in common with all oil-deficit areas, the Philippines and South Korea are seeking lower cost sources of energy. Both countries have coal deposits. In the case of the Philippines, the reserves are in scattered, relatively small deposits. Most of the coal deposits are faulted, folded and, in general present formidable production problems for limited reserves. Nonetheless production has been on the order of about 70,000 to 150,000 tons per year in the last 30 years. Prior productions (1920-1941) varied between 9,000 Co 150,000 tons per year. (13)

It has recently been discovered that the pH at which gold can be extracted from cyanide solution with primary, secondary, and tertiary amines can be increased 2 to 5 pH units by the addition of modifiers. Under these circumstances gold can be extracted at pH values from 9 to 11, commensurate with the pH range found in cyanide leach liquors. The selectivity of the amines and amine/modifier combinations for AU (CN)[-2] over other metal -cyanide complexes is presented and discussed. In addition, potential applications for the solvent extraction of gold from cyanide solutions are discussed.
