INTRODUCTION The measurement of displacements in soil or rock in the vicinity of underground openings provide valuable information for a better understanding of the behaviour of the structure. On the basis of systematic observations conclusions can be drawn concerning - safety of the opening in the various stages of excavation - effectiveness of the support measures - nature of the rock pressure to be expected - influence of the construction of the opening on neighbouring structures (settlements of foundations, underpassing other tunnels etc.) - comparison of theoretical predictions with the actual structural behaviour (1). Today there are several types of suitable instruments available that can be employed at reasonable costs for such investigations (2). The most important ones are the multiple point borehole extensometer, the inclinometer and the multiple point borehole deflectometer. As is well-known, the extensometer only measures the displacement component in the borehole axis, while the inclinometer and the deflectometer provide monitoring of rock mass movements normal to the borehole axis. In the following a new instrument is described, which has been given the name Extenso-Deflectometer ISETH. In this single piece of equipment certain features of the above-mentioned three types of borehole instruments are incorporated. it enables the measurement of all three components of the displacement vector at consecutive points along the borehole, the axis of which may have any direction in space. Effective coal mine face ventilation, for remotely controlled and automated mining systems, is essential for the control of methane. The evolution of new mining equipment and methods has required changes and improvements in face ventilation methods. One emphasis today is on the use of remotely operated and automated mining systems that can be used to make continuous cuts of 6 m (20 ft) and deeper. U.S. Bureau of Mines research is studying ways to more effectively ventilate these extended cuts. Two face ventilation techniques that utilize either blowing brattice or a jet fan for deep cutting are examined in this paper. Bureau of Mines procedures for evaluating face ventilation systems are also discussed.

Chelating resins can be used to recover important metals from different sources, and it is important to understand which resin is most suitable for each metal [1]. In beneficiation of phosphate ores it is common to use screening to produce the coarse "pebble" concentrate, and flotation to process the -1+0.1 mm size fraction. The -0.1 mm desliming product is treated as tailings. A new partially hydrophobic flocculant, P(MAAA) latex was developed to enhance flotation recovery of fine apatite particles through selective flocculation.

As the mining industry is enjoying a much needed and long awaited increase in demand for natural resources, consolidations in both the mining and mining service industries and a generational departure of experienced industry professionals is challenging today’s mining companies, not only in maintaining their existing operations, but also in securing qualified resources for developing new projects. These challenges are compounded for junior mining companies, oftentimes lacking in operating properties to draw from for experienced professionals and having to compete with the majors’ “mega-projects” for experienced project personnel from the reduced ranks of engineering companies. Long-Term Open Pit Scheduler or L-TOPS is a new software package for evaluating, planning, and design of open pit mines. L-TOPS transforms geological, economic, and technical information about a mineral deposit into a detailed mining schedule that maximizes economic efficiency without neglecting the practical requirements of mining operations. L-TOPS has been customized for integration with Placer Dome Inc.'s existing in-house resource/reserve optimization software to function as a primary tool for property acquisition studies and for the designing of mines for feasibility studies. This pa-per presents an overview of L-TOPS and reports on its application to Placer Pacific's (Placer Dome's Australian affiliate) Mt. Rawdon project.

This paper presents an overview of surface mining activity in the Canadian oil sands and how the mine operators interact with the province of Alberta's Mine Financial Security Program (MFSP), which took effect April 1, 2011. The MFSP approach to reclamation assurance results in the government of Alberta sharing a portion of reclamation liability through the majority of an oil sand mine's life. In order to determine the potential fiscal magnitude of this shared liability, an examination of the expected costs of oil sands reclamation activities through a study of corporate asset retirement obligation (ARO) liabilities and other corporate disclosures is presented. The province of Alberta's Environmental Protection Security Fund (EPSF), which formerly secured oil sands mine reclamation activities is discussed. Reclamation costs in the oil sands are poorly understood. The MFSP provides what it characterizes as a conservative estimate of C$75,000/ha, while corporate disclosures by Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. place expected costs at C$180,000/ha. There is significant risk associated with the apparent uncertainty surrounding reclamation costs.

The stresses in the materials surrounding an underground opening are dependent upon the virgin stress field, the geometry of the opening and changes in boundary conditions as mining progresses. For most underground openings especially in coal mines, roof bolts are installed to help stabilize the opening. While most parameters in roof bolt design and installation have been thoroughly investigated, the effects of the initial stress field on the effectiveness of roof bolts have not been recognized. This paper summarizes the results of investigation of the effect of the initial stress field on the performance of mine roof bolts. Roof bolt installations are duplicated in the laboratory utilizing conventional roof bolt frame, commercial roof bolts and shells, mine torque wrench and encapsulated rock specimens for anchorage. A special and primary feature of the laboratory set-up is the addition of a loading system for generating stresses at the anchorage specimens. For this preliminary study, different levels of hydrostatic stress fields were induced at the anchorage specimen, instrumented roof bolts were installed in the usual manner, and the bolt load loss-with-time observed. Statistical analysis of data showed that the stress field at the anchorage horizon has a considerable influence on the performance of mine roof bolts, i.e. the higher the stress field, the higher the anchorage efficiency. From this observation, methods of improving the performance of mine roof bolts utilizing new shell designs and methods of installing them are suggested.

One-half of the $607 million Conveyance construction portion of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District's Water Pollution Abatement Program is completed or under contract. 12,200 m (7.5 miles) of tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven rock tunnel from 2.5 m (8.0 ft) to 9.9 m (32.3 ft) diameter has been completed. This paper presents a review of TBM performance and a discussion of the pertinent geological conditions of the area.

The flood basalts of the Columbia Plateau in eastern Washington State are under investigation for suitability in siting a deep geologic repository for high-level radioactive waste. To support safety and feasibility evaluations of the proposed repository construction and operation, an assessment is necessary of the potential for inflow of groundwater to the repository excavations from the surrounding saturated rock. Preliminary estimates of inflow are presented using simple models appropriate to the current understanding of available data. Both normal and bounding analyses are presented.

The title of this paper implies the presence of silver, nickel, and cobalt minerals at, the Alhambra mine. Perhaps this should be amplified to include uranium, as pitchblende also occurs, possibly in mineable quantifies. A brief history of the Alhambra mine is of interest, both from a historical angle and as pointing up the importance of geology in the-present development. The Alhambra is one of several mines in the Bullards Peak or Black Hawk dis¬trict, ass it is more familiarly known, in southwestern. New Mexico, which was mined for silver in the 1880?s and 18901s, Silver valued between $500,000 and $1,000,000 was extracted from the mine in the 10 years prior to 1893, when operations ceased. Almost all the silver mined was native silver, although a small quantity of argentite was produced. Nickel and cobalt were recognized in the ores, but they were thought to be of no consequence.

In the United States, about one-quarter of the fuel oil and natural gas consumption is associated with power production in utility and industrial boilers and process heat needs in industrial furnaces. Coal has been an attractive candidate for replacement of these premium fuels because of its low cost, but there are penalties associated with the solid fuel form. In many cases pulverized coal is unacceptable as a premium fuel replacement because of the extensive cost of retrofitting an existing boiler designed to burn oil or gas. In the cases of synthetic fuels from coal, research and development still has a long way to go and the costs of research and development are very high. Another option which appears very attractive is the use of solid coal in a liquid fuel form, coal slurry fuels. Occidental Research Corporation (ORC) has been developing coal slurry fuels in conjunction with Island Creek Coal (ICC,) Occidental Petroleum's wholly-owned subsidiary. Both Coal-Oil Mixtures and Coal -Water Mixtures are under development. ICC is a large eastern coal producer, engaged in the production and marketing of bituminous coal, both utility steam and high quality/low volatile metallurgical coals. A sister division, Sheridan Enterprises is engaged in the development of western coals.

Kaolin is an important industrial mineral. It has unique properties, which combined with its low cost, make it suitable for use in a wide variety of products. Kaolin is defined as "any of a group of clay minerals, including kaolinite, nacrite, dickite, and anauxite, with a two-layer crystal in which silicon-oxygen and aluminum-hydroxyl sheets alternate; approximate composition is AlZ03-ZSiOZ-1/ ZHZO".-The kaolin discussed here is composed chiefly of the mineral kaolinite. Kaolin is also commonly referred to as "china clay". Approximately 4.9 kkg (5.4 million short tons) of kaolin was sold or used in the United States, and .8 million kkg (.9 million short tons) was -exported in 1974. In domestic usage, paper coating and filling accounted for 43% of the total, fol-2/ lowed by refractories, rubber, and ceramics.-Figure 1 shows the amount of kaolin sold or used by domestic producers for specified uses for the years 1963-3/ 1973.- Kaolin was produced at mines in 14 states, but Georgia accounted for 75% of the 1974 domestic production. The average value for all grades was $36.00/kkg 4/ ($32. 67/ton) .-

The primary grinding stage in the Vuonos concentrator comprises a rod mill in open circuit and a semi-autogeneous mill in closed, circuit with a hydrocyclone classifier. The instrumentation of the grinding circuit is displayed in Fig. 1. All the measurements have computer interfaces and all the control circuits have been implemented by the process control computer. The crushed ore feed to the rod mill is measured by a belt-weigher and controlled by a belt-feeder. The pulp density in the rod mill is stabilized by proportioning the waterfeed at the mill inlet to the crushed ore feed. The slurry level in the pump sump is measured by a pressure transducer and it is controlled by charging the speed of the direct-current drive pump.

Rock bolts are highly important underground to prevent falls of ground and thus, ensure safety. In situ, the ground reinforcement is subjected to a combination of loads, such as shear, tensile, and/or bending loads. Studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect of either shear, tensile, or bending loads on the ground support. However, only a few studies have been done to evaluate the effect of combined load on the rock bolt performance. In situ, the order of loads acting on the bar cannot be predicted, and more than one load can act on the bar at the same time. Thus, a hybrid failure criterion was developed that covered all combined loading conditions. Fifty-eight un-grouted laboratory rock bolt tests were conducted in total under two load conditions: applying shear displacement to the rock bolt and then tensile load to failure, and applying tensile displacement to the rock bolt and then shear load to failure. From the test results, the failure criterion was developed based on regression analysis. A nonlinear relationship was determined for the loading condition variations. The failure criterion presented in this paper can be used as a guide in the rock bolt capacity design under all loading conditions.

This paper presents a case study of two major Australian infrastructure projects that used digital engineering to facilitate design delivery: WestConnex Project (Rozelle Interchange), and Sydney Metro West (Eastern Tunnelling Package). The paper presents project overviews and building information modeling (BIM) execution and focuses on modeling techniques, software utilization, data management strategies and how the digital models helped the design-build team mitigate impacts to schedule by identifying clashes between disciplines before the execution of work. Finally, it demonstrates the positive and transformative impact of digital engineering on the design and construction of large underground infrastructure projects and highlights its role in asset management throughout the project lifecycle.

Preliminary design is underway for a new Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) project that will ensure one of America’s most reliable water systems by providing continued, reliable water service to existing and future customers. The Horizon Lateral is a $1.6 billion water transmission pipeline that includes 7–10 miles of 108-inch finished diameter rock and soft-ground tunnels. The tunnels will traverse volcanic rock in or around the McCullough Mountain Range and the surrounding alluvial basin. The tunneling community will find relevance in hearing about this critical infrastructure project from a leading wholesale water utility owner with a proven track record for on-time, collaborative projects.

Mexico City's growth has encourage development of underworks to meet drainage and transport requirements. Deep Drainage System has been constructed through a complex tunnel network, 108 km in total, varying from 30 to 12 m in depth and 6.24 or 4.00 m in diameter. Wide range of stability conditions presented in soils has forced the use of several tunnelling methods, going from the manual procedure by the use of pneumatic tools, to slurry shields, or open face shields, with the aid of or without compressed air. For transport, subway tunnels have been excavated in very compact silty sands, 9.15 and 9.51 m in diameter, with the use of open shields one of which was designed by Mexican engineers as a prototype machine. This paper tries to describe evolution of tunnelling methods used in Mexico City during last 20 years.

Based on the classical definition of optimization, flotation plants of today are far from being perfect, effective, or functional as possible. Though considerable efforts have been expanded in the optimization endeavor during the last decade, much more needs to be done in the future to optimize our flotation plants and operations. The major problem in designing an optimum flotation circuit is that the flotation process depends on the interaction of several physical and chemical parameters. In the past, there has been a tendency to only consider the effects of chemical factors such as flotation reagents: collectors, frothers, conditioning reagents, pH, etc. On the physical side, the emphasis has been limited to the liberation characteristics, grinding time, percent, solids in the pulp and flotation time. Its only recently that we are employing particle size analyses, on-stream analysis, oxidation reduction potential and the like, as operating controls. The design, operation and control of a mineral processing plant depends on costs incurred at all stages, from inception (testing for flowsheet development) through plant closure and beyond. To ensure that micro- and macro- engineering technology is transferred to operational levels, the academia, testing engineers, designers, operators, consultants and management must all get involved in the transformation process. Historically, in the 1950’s engineering empiricism was strengthened through micro-engineering based on fundamental and mechanism. Unique scientific apparatus such as zeta meter and infrasizer were used to test new hypotheses. With the advent of computers in the 60s and 70s, complex differential equations were solved to study and understand unit processes and to assess mechanism assumptions. Such efforts contributed to improved understanding of the unit operations such as comminution, flotation, thickening, filtration and the like. In the 80s and 90s with the availability of more sophisticated computer technology involving modeling procedures, advanced numerical methods, image analysis, nonlinear-curve-fitting and data adjustments, it was possible to test newly developed models under the production environments. These innovations are now available to develop simulator and sensors (such as particle size analyses) for macro-engineering purposes including plant design, automatic controls and optimization. Accordingly, it behooves the mining companies and plant operators to take advantage of these new developments to control a large number of physical and chemical parameters involved in the plant operation and optimization. This is especially important in light of declining head grades and increasing operating costs in the U.S. minerals industry if it wishes to maintain a competitive edge in the international marketplace. In regard to the future R & D activities in the field, in order to arrive at useful correlations in micro- engineering research, it is essential to consider a plant operation as an interactive engineering system representing the combined effects of physics and chemistry, equipment and operation. Principally, mining natural resources is a finite business that reaches its limits once the deposits mined are depleted, the resources can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way or substitutes are pushing the mined products out of the market. An example of the latter is the increasing replacement of coal with natural gas and renewables in power generation in the United States [1]. According to the model of the product lifecycle, the global hard-coal mining industry has reached a stagnation phase [2]. The trend is obvious. Coal use peaked in 2013 [3], and the coal demand of China has been slowly decreasing since then [4]. Coal consumption in the United States saw a 16 percent decline from 726 Mt (800 million st) to 608 Mt (670 million st) between 2015 and 2019. In addition, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, it will not rise again [5]. The decline is attributed to complex market dynamics, from low gas prices because of the “shale gas revolution” [6] to federal environmental regulations like the Clean Power Plan. Moreover, important players like the United Nations and the European Union have already begun to describe pathways toward decarbonization. Increasing competition between coal-mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries, like France, Spain or Germany, are only forerunners of this development — their centuries of coal production have passed. The concept of sustainable development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress in which ecological, economic and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. Questions arise, such as: How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can former mining regions sustainably progress to a better future? The steps Germany has taken to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process are described in this paper.
