This paper deals with the occurrence of basic and ultrabasic rocks and their relationship in space and time to major structures of the earth. In order to introduce the paper properly, I must go back a little and try to put the subject in perspective. In the brief time that geology has been a scientific occupation, ore deposits have been grouped and classified in various ways depending on the theories that happened to be popular at the time. Some of the early scientists said that ore came from fire, other schools argued that ore originated from water. Then came the lateral secretionists and in later years the hydrothermalists led by the Lindgren school and the latter has largely been accepted as the modern concept of ore deposits. It now seems apparent that the hydrothermal school is being seriously challenged by other schools of thought. It also seems that we have reached the point where we should be willing to admit that we do not really know in most cases how the ore got to its present position. However, for practical purposes, we can classify ore deposits as to the environment in which they do occur. This is not difficult and gives the field geologist and the mining engineer something to work with and to believe in, and it gives them a basis for carrying out their field work. A longstanding problem in geostatistics is that kriging usually assigns significantly greater weights to end samples in strings of data than it does to central samples. These weights are theoretically valid, but suboptimal estimates may result when there are geological trends in the variable near contacts, that is, large weights may be applied to samples that are systematically lower or higher than average. A number of ad-hoc corrections exist, each with pros and cons; none are fully automatic with a well-defined measure of optimality. A new method for estimation in a finite domain is proposed. This method is referred to as finite domain kriging. The method is based on kriging with a successively larger number of data. The total number of relevant data (n) is established, and then n kriging matrices are solved. The first matrix has the closest single data value (n-1 weights are set to zero); the second has the two closest data (n-2 weights are set to zero) and so on. The final matrix has all n data. The kriging weights used for estimation are the average of the weights from the n successive kriging runs. Each kriging run is optimal, yet with different smoothing and a different treatment of data at the end of the strings. The result is a set of weights that does not give undue influence to data values at the end of strings. The methodology is developed with examples. Cross validation shows that finite domain kriging outperforms conventional kriging.

The dissolution behavior of palladium powder in thiourea solutions has been studied. The variables studied included temperature, stirring speed, and concentrations of thiourea, acid and ferric ion. Palladium was found to be soluble in thiourea solutions in the presence of an oxidant such as ferric ion. The dissolution of palladium in thiourea solutions was found to be chemical reaction controlled with an apparent activation energy of about 2S.3 kJ/mol.

In being asked to present this paper on the improvements in loading and hauling equipment and the effect on unit costs, Mr. Van De Water, your program chairman, stated that his reason for coming to a contractor was due to the wide experience of, and I quote: "a large contracting firm using a variety of equipment on varying types of earth moving jobs." We people in Utah Construction Company are flattered that Mr. Van De Water singled out our Company for this assignment. Utah Construction Company's participation in open pit mine stripping antedates the 1920's, when overburden was being removed from copper ore in Bingham Canyon, Utah. Our first stripping con¬tract for the Copper Company was finished in 1912. Since that early beginning, Utah has, as a contractor, been engaged to strip and mine iron ore properties, coal properties, copper properties, uranium properties, phosphate,-gypsum, limestone and dolomite properties. And, as you know, the Company has become a major producer of iron ore from Company-owned open pit mines. Utah Construction Company has been instrumental in the evolution of open pit mining tools. Some of the first tools were the old wood and coal fired stream shovels which had to be fired hours before a shift started to insure a full head of steam, providing power to excavate with the then large 1-1/2 cubic yard buckets. Today, Utah's strip mining is done, with 18 cubic yard and 10 cubic yard crawler shovels. Yesterday's horse and mule drawn, iron wheeled wagons, with 1 and 2 cubic yard capacity, which were hand dumped by removing the false bottom, one 2 x 4 at a time, have been replaced by today's- 50-ton capacity, hydraulic, rear dump trucks and giant 40-ton coal haulers. Utah Construction Company used the early fresnes and wheeled scrapers which were horse and mule drawn. Often, an operator holding too tightly to a handle was thrown into his horses when a hard spot turned the scraper, a contrast with today's 20 and 25 cubic yard, self-powered diesel and diesel electric Gargantuan rigs; with power controls that relieve the operator of practically all physical work. This Company has pioneered many of today's advances in equipment with shop made prototypes, features of which were adopted and elaborated upon by equipment manufacturers.

The decision to develop an ore body can lead to multi-million dollar profits, or equally substantial losses. Accordingly, the effort required to adapt a valuation model to the specific proposal at hand, or even the development of a new model from basic principles, is clearly warranted. In the formulation of a model of this nature, one is faced with some major questions. For example, with the long term obligations that it implies, on what basis should a decision to initiate mining operations be made? Furthermore, how can the vagaries of inflation and the uncertainties that shroud the future be accommodated? Beyond the general principles by which mineral deposits are evaluated, specific cost behaviour is a function of the geology of the deposit, and of the mine design. Moreover, mine design, during the life of the mine, must be a continuing process somewhat akin to dynamic programming. An initial, apparently optimal, design is selected and mining commences. With production, a continual process of information updating leads to revisions. Thus if the maximum value is to be obtained, the mine design must be adjusted to conform to the changed conditions.

The practical and effective pulp distributor here presented is believed to be of a completely new and innovative design. It was developed at the San Nicolas Plant of the Marcona Mining Company in Peru, where it has been thoroughly plant tested using iron ore slurries of a particularly abrasive nature. It has proven to be superior to the apparatus originally installed, or to any observed in operation elsewhere. In plant practice the capacity and efficiency of many process units such as screens, magnetic separators, and jigs are strongly affected by the loading pattern, and for better results the flow of pulp must be proportioned across the receiving lip in equal quantities per unit width. The distributors originally installed on the drum magnetic separators in San Nicolas proved to be unsatisfactory, and several trial modifications failed to show any improvement. As is usually the case, feed rates were being steadily increased, and appreciable losses to tailings resulted. A check of the distributors on the market discloses no reasonable substitute, so efforts were directed toward devising an entirely new type. Required was a positive type of action which would guarantee that the pulp flow be spread equally along the length of the drum. Discussion As indicated, the motivation for development was simple necessity. The plant in San Nicolas crushes, grinds, and concentrates magnetic iron ores of a particularly abrasive nature, and depends largely on magnetic separation to obtain a marketable product. Feed to the numerous drum magnetic cobbers and finishers varies from rod mill discharge at a nominal minus ten mesh to a ball mill fine grind of seventy percent minus three hundred and twenty-five mesh. "Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) measurements were taken at Tronox’s Westvaco Trona mine in Wyoming. Both shift-average and real-time monitoring using Elf pumps and Airtec analyzers, were used. The mine’s underground transportation fleet consists of more than 250 diesel-powered vehicles. A vehicle monitoring log tracked fleet usage during the test; logged data consisted of vehicle type, direction of travel, and time. The log was used in analysis to determine the DPM spread rate, of normally operating equipment, in the different entries with respect to vehicle location. Airflow velocity measurements at the stations were taken during the survey. The survey results also identified vehicles with higher emission rates. An ECOM gas and a MAHA DPM analyzer, both located in the mine’s underground emission shop, were used to obtain various vehicle emission rates. The correlation of the workshop and field measurements was investigated with regard to the machine activity, fuel usage and atmospheric conditions. The results were used to identify and execute a ventilation project to reroute 45% of diesel shop air back to intake entries, by interlocking an automated door and a regulator. The result is reduced DPM downstream. INTRODUCTION DPM has been classified as a potential occupational carcinogen by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) rule governing DPM exposures in metal and nonmetal mines cites total carbon (TC), a summation of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) obtained by NIOSH Method 5040, as a surrogate for determining DPM exposures (Noll, 2006). MSHA personnel use the 1973 sampling criteria outlined by the American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) for collecting compliance-based respirable and inhalation samples in metal/nonmetal mines. Instrumentation developments are allowing improved real time monitoring of ventilation parameters. DPM is within the aerodynamic particle size range of the samplers used for respirable and inhalable dust measurements. If a sampler used by MSHA to collect inhalable or respirable dust samples in underground metal/nonmetal mines was used to collect DPM, both the DPM and mine ore dust would accumulate on the sample filter (Noll, 2006). To comply with the requirement and lower the DPM exposure, mines are implementing a variety of control technologies such as emission based maintenance programs where adjustments or repairs are performed on the vehicles (McGinn, 2000)."

In 1988, the U.S. Department of Energy's Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center identified three coal cleaning options for achieving flexible environmental control strategies aimed at reducing energy-related SO2 emissions. These are selective agglomeration, advanced froth flotation, and advanced cycloning. Each technology relies on maximum liberation of pyrite and other mineral matter through feed coal comminution to fine and ultrafine sizes. Research projects designed to expeditiously develop each of these technologies to the point of commercial viability were initiated. This paper will present the status of these projects and the application potential of each technology to coal beneficiation.

From 1996 to 2001, Wayne County and 13 suburban Detroit communities constructed the Downriver Regional Storage and Transport System (DRSTS) to improve area water quality, protect public health and alleviate basement flooding. The project consisted of a 10-mile long storage and transport tunnel, a pump station at the existing wastewater treatment plant, 9 miles of relief sewers (6 in tunnel and 3 in open cut). The work was separated into 10 contracts. Due to hydraulic design requirements and other constraints, the tunnel profile was located generally 65 feet below ground surface within a soft to medium clay strata which skimmed along the top of a very dense glacial till “hardpan” overlaying bedrock. Boulders within the tunnel bore were recognized as a significant, but indeterminate risk. This paper presents a case history of the owner’s contracting strategy for risk assumption and management of the boulder impacts on the project. Actual conditions encountered during construction and contractual adjustments made to address problems are reviewed, and recommendations for future contracts are included.

In underground mine production units that employ discrete-vehicle face haulage, feeders are used in the belt network so that vehicles can unload rapidly without transmitting to the conveyor network the high material flow rates that result from rapid unloading. They prevent production bottlenecks at the face, while reducing capacity requirements for downstream materials handling equipment. Similarly, surge bins may be installed at intermediate locations in the network to smooth flows from a number of upstream sources, thereby reducing downstream belt capacity requirements. This paper introduces new stochastic process models to temporally describe loading patterns from unit operations and techniques for computing the probability of various fill levels for the feeder or surge bin. These results may be used to analyze the effect of alternative bin or feeder capacities and discharge rates on the performance and costs of the materials handling system.

Most wet mines face unquantified water costs as well as the obvious wing costs. Both kinds of cost are multiplied by work at greater depth and by higher unit prices. This intensified challenge merits renewed or perhaps altogether new response. Any practicable way to reduce inflow tackles both obvious and unquantified costs. Ten groups of possible ways to do it are cited. Most have been demonstrated. Two are known from work other than mining. Surely new means can be found. Here are opportunities for operators of wet mines!

Although fracture intersections and "domes" seem at a number of places to be the basic structural combination for the occurrence of a mining district, of the porphyry-copper type particularly, this situation is, of course, not always to be expected. For instance, the group of mines comprising Superior, Ray, Miami, Globe, Christmas appeared from the beginning of these structural studies as typical exceptions, and there are others. One had to expect additional parameters to allow for any mineral concentration to occur. One of these apparent parameters is here considered. From the result of stratigraphic studies related to ancient formations in Southeast Arizona, the Martin limestone (Devonian in age) was retained as having a possible relationship with the structure-economic studies in progress, as evidenced for instance by the mineralized O'Carroll bed located at the base of the Martin. This limestone formation has been rather extensively investigated in the past and there are many known sample localities. For this work, the isopach map was drawn by computer to insure more objectivity and, in addition to the available data points, a number of dummy points with a zero value were added around the assumed form-

Mine design and selection of ore processing capacity depend upon a correct estimate of the grade-tonnage distribution. The estimate must reflect what can be recovered and processed. The McCoy/Cove operation in central Nevada, USA, is a gold and silver mine. Case studies of recoverable reserve estimation for gold and silver were made using multiple indicator kriging and the log-affine variance correction. From this model, the grade-tonnage distribution was constructed. Optimal pits were generated by utilizing the distribution, and the results were compared with the pit generated by ordinary kriging. Studies indicate that the proposed method for multi-metal recoverable reserve estimation is more accurate than ordinary kriging in terms of both tons and the grade. Using recoverable reserves for mine design will maximize global recovery of mineral resources.

Establishing suitable control of pH, a requirement in a number of mineral and chemical industries, poses a difficult problem because of inherent nonlinearities and frequently changing process dynamics. Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed a technique for effectively controlling such systems. This technique successfully combines the process control capabilities of fuzzy logic and the search capabilities of genetic algorithms. Fuzzy logic offers an effective mechanism for handling nonlinearities, while genetic algorithms can provide fuzzy logic controllers with real-time adaptive capabilities. This Bureau-developed technique is applied to a laboratory acid-base neutralization experiment. Nonlinearities in the laboratory system are associated with the logarithmic pH scale and the changing process dynamics are due to alterations in pH and buffering capacity input solutions. Results indicate fuzzy logic controllers augmented with genetic algorithms offer a powerful alternative to conventional process control techniques in such nonlinear, rapidly changing systems.

Most mining and metallurgical plants have developed predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis and special techniques, like vibration analysis, oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. Process control strategies have also been installed in several metallurgical sites. These control strategies require instrumentation maintenance from local personnel. The availability of real time and process history to identify the most critical part of the processing system from mechanical integrity is a must for global plant optimization. Specialized performance control monitoring algorithms are required to justify their existence and contribution to the bottom line. Emerging technologies are combining these techniques into a single total plant system. Tools are required to assist in troubleshooting and adapting these process control instruments and strategies. The key is the plant equipment and process control availability and utilization rather than just maintenance.

Designing an underground nuclear waste repository is a complex process. Although many decisions are involved before the design is complete, the first three--what the target horizon is, what the underground boundary is, and where the entry point will be located--are important because they establish the basis for the entire repository design. Even more important than these decisions, however, is the data on which the decisions are based. Because the current data are limited, an aggressive data gathering program is needed during the next design phase to augment information about the intricate interplay among all facets of the repository design and the geologic medium in which the proposed repository is to be developed. Although unique to modern engineering enterprises, the challenges involved in designing a repository in the unsaturated zone are within current technology and engineering practices.

During, 1956 the water used in mining iron ore in the United States amounted to about 2 billion gallons and the water used in producing iron concentrates-amounted to about 166 billion gallons. By 1980 an increase of about 65 percent is anticipated in the amount of water used for mining and beneficiating iron ore. Except for boiler-feed makeup water the quality requirements for water, for mining and beneficiating iron ores are not stringent. Adequate supplies. of water for development should be available at reasonable cost with the possible exception of some in arid regions.
