Total world energy consumption is projected to continue its strong growth of recent years. Because coal is the most abundant fossil fuel, it will likely remain an important energy source, particularly for power generation, into at least the early years of the next millennium. Clean coal technologies are available today that can economically reduce air pollution, primarily SO2 NOx and particulates, and for the higher efficiency technologies, CO2, from power generation. U.S. Department of Energy analyses show that the adoption of clean coal technologies could decrease carbon emissions worldwide while creating a strong export market with attendant creation of jobs in the U.S.

The size distribution and mechanical strength of the iron ore pellet burden are important parameters in determining the efficiency of the blast furnace. From the very outset, the guiding principle of our pellet quality improvement program was that these parameters are also the key to improving productivity and cost control at the pellet plant. In this paper, an innovative concept in longwall tailgate support is discussed. This new concept utilizes a new high capacity roof truss system in lieu of conventional wooden crib block. The first field test was conducted at Bailey Mine and was very successful. Similar tests have been installed in other mines and seams. An extensive instrumentation plan was designed and implemented in the truss test area. The test data has shown that the dynamic roof truss system effectively controls the various abutment pressures caused by longwall mining thus maintaining a stable tailgate entry.

To generate a most profitable ultimate pit limit is generally the first step in mine design. This paper presents a new graph theory oriented, optimum ultimate pit limit design algorithm which will maximize the total undiscounted net profit. This algorithm performs much better than the well known Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm, in terms of the reduction in computation time and computer memory requirements. This algorithm operates on many directed trees in a graph, where each vertex in a tree represents a block in the mine model. The formation of each directed tree is based more on the ore-waste support concept than the geometry constraints alone. The general procedures of the algorithm, programming considerations and two case study results are discussed in the paper.

My paper relates to bond's third theory of comminution and suggests work be used as a basis for designing crushing and screening plants, this will give more accuracy than existing methods, As stated in the abstract, this paper is only a synopsis of my official paper, many of the questions that might arise in this brief address will be answered by referring to the detail i n the main paper $ Because of the limited time available and the fact that many people here do not need to study the aspects of crushing and screening in depth, i will highlight-those sections of the paper which show how major capital, operating and energy cost savings can be achieved in the process, I will develop the theme in the following manner, Firstly, pointing out, why a new approach is needed to the fundamentals of crushing and screening, Secondly, by setting forth some theory to describe what we are trying to accomplish, Thirdly, by looking at important factors which need to be observed in designing plants and applying machines to comply with this theory, Lastly, i will put forth some ideas on how we might develop this theory to make the industry more efficient, At the outset, i have to say my approach to this process is entirely new, for those used to applying machines and designing plants on existing criteria, they will find this theory easier

Mining is one of the oldest human activities. It goes back at least to the Bronze Age and possibly even the Stone Age. The Romans mined copper in Spain and tin in England some two thousand years ago. The writings of Agricola in the 16th century show that mining was important in the Middle Ages. Today we mine more mineral commodities in greater tonnages than ever before. This long and fascinating history closely tied with the economic development of the human race is one of the charms of the mining industry. It also, unfortunately, gives rise to some widespread misconceptions.

New developments in on-stream analysis using immersed radioisotope gauges including results from plant installations are described. The control of grinding and flotation using a small digital computer has been complemented by this development. A control scheme for grinding which is based on maximum throughput at constant product size and preliminary work in flotation control are also outlined.

A new coal boom is under way in western Canada. As recently as the mid-1960's, the coal industry in western Canada was considered stagnant and, by some people, dying. But Japan's growing need for coking coal, which became more pronounced in 1966, sparked great interest in western Canadian reserves.' As a result of a rapidly expanding export market and growth in domestic demand, Canadian coal production spurted to 16.6 million tons in 1970. Production in 1965 was 11.5 million tons. Today, about 60 percent of Canada's output comes from western Canada, but by 1975, 87 percent (23.1 million tons) is expected to come from this area, and 96 percent (68.3 million tons) by 1990. Opening, developing and operating new coal mines to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding market for western Canadian metallurgical coals pose some unique and difficult problems. Covering nearly every aspect of opening properties in remote areas, the problems are met in exploration, transportation, construction, mine operations, coal preparation, manpower and ecology. Paul Weir Company has been involved as coal consultants on various projects in western Canada for some years. In presenting this paper, we make no attempt to present an in-depth or detailed analysis of any one specific situation. By combining statistical methods with specialized coal technology, novel and widely applicable procedures are developed which are useful for making important decisions based on coal seam structure. By analyzing such properties as ash in visual coal types of seam cross sections and by processing the ash data to 100 gram increments of coal ranging from the top to the bottom of the seam, intraseam comparisons between data populations of samples from a given seam and a reference seam can be made. Moreover, illustrations are presented for estimating the number of drill cores required to purchase a specified level of sampling accuracy together with procedures for determining the probability that different coal scan cross sections are not unlike and by inference are therefore comparable. Such comparisons can be valuable when making important, costly and long prevaling decisions involving coal exploration, mining, preparation and utilization.

Because of a, work stoppage at the Carlsbad plant, IMC faced the challenge of operating a 24-hour-a-day mine and plant with inexperienced maintenance and production crews. This is an underground mining operation, using the room-and-pillar mining- method. The mine was entirely, mechanized with conventional equipment, was hoisting an average of 13,539 tons off ore per 24 hours, and employed a, mine maintenance group of 100 men. The 100-man, mine maintenance group was equally divided between mechanics and electricians. In re-forming this maintenance group, two main objectives were to be achieved (1) a general upgrading off the intelligence level; and (2) the elimination of craft lines for greater flexibility.

Evidence for the floatability of sulphide minerals without collector is analyzed and it is shown that results obtained with ores, in contrast to those with single minerals or mineral mixtures, depend on many additional variables, some identified and others not. Because of the prevailing low levels and costs of collectors for most sulphide ores, it is unlikely that collectorless flotation will have commercial applications, so that continued research on the subject may be justifiable on theoretical but not on practical grounds.

A new bacterium, Thiobacillus cuprinus, can extract copper from chalcopyrite as rapidly as T. ferrooxidans. On solution with and without nutrient amendments and bacterial growth media were supplemented with T. ferrooxidans or T. cuprinus in shake flask studies. Both species extracted -42% of the copper using growth media. In one case, T. cuprinus solubilized approximately twice as much copper as T. ferrooxidans utilizing a seeded On solution. Thiobacillus prosperus also oxidizes chalcopyrite and tolerates high chloride concentrations. These sulfide-oxidizing bacteria are representatives of the mixed microbial community found in sulfide dumps. Rates of biological copper extraction from sulfide ores, using the native microbes, have been significantly enhanced by amending On solution with PGM.

Time-domain reflectometry (TDR) laboratory experiments have been conducted using cylindrical salt cores from the Waste Isolation Pilot Project (WIPP). TDR has been used as an instrumentation technique to quantify the type and magnitude of rock mass deformation. Laboratory shear and tensile tests were conducted to calibrate measured deformation versus changes in reflected waveforms. Coaxial cables grouted within rock cores were crimped to produce localized reference defects. The evaluation of waveform characteristics produced during rock deformation experiments shows a good correlation of cable response to both shear and extension of the salt

An in situ leaching geochemical simulator consisting of flow, mass transport, and graphics support programs has been developed. Two dimensional flow in heterogeneous porous media is modeled using a semi-analytic boundary integral technique. This method involves mapping streamlines to straight line segments in the complex potential plane. Leachant concentration and mineral values are modeled in this plane using the (one dimensional) potential coordinates. A fully implicit finite difference scheme is used to solve the resulting coupled system of four concentration equations. Graphical representations of streamline patterns, concentration histories, profiles and recovery curves are generated. An application of the model to uranium leaching in a heterogeneous aquifer and ore zone setting is presented.

The coal burning power plant group has adopted this new storage tool most quickly. The actual history is traced in this area in some detail. Researchers at National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating how fiber-reinforced shotcrete mix designs can be extrapolated from proven designs employing wire mesh. This paper explains the results of round determinate panel tests and relates the flexural strength and toughness of fiber-reinforced shotcrete to known energy absorbing properties of wire mesh. The energy absorbed with central deflection is strongly influenced by the amount of fibres. The higher the energy absorption the more load cracked shotcrete can support. Two types of fiber-reinforced shotcrete were investigated, one with steel fiber and another with polyfiber. The residual load supported in Round Determinate Panel Tests can be matched with the strength of wire mesh, thus providing equivalent bag strength values for fiber reinforced shotcrete panels. There is also evidence of a panel crack width comparison to the load holding capabilities of the fiber in the shotcrete mixes. In practice, this provides designers with a method for comparing the ground support provided by fiber-reinforced shotcrete with that supplied by wire mesh.

An accurate knowledge of Interactions among mineral particles and between such particles and dissolved and precipitated species Is Important in developing efficient separation processes. In this investigation interactions in Florida phosphatic clay waste, that are relevant to dispersion and selective reagent adsorption, the two main prerequisites for selective flocculation, were studied. Initial studies with artificial slimes, consisting of pure clay and phosphate minerals, showed dispersion of artificial slimes to be relatively easy. The problems that were encountered during selective flocculation of the artificial slime were due to unselective polyacryllc acid adsorption on clay, which was caused by the presence of multivalent calcium ions on the exchangeable cation positions on the clay surfaces. This problem could be solved by exchanging calcium for sodium, which reduces the interaction between the polymer and the clay surface. This procedure, however, was not successful for mineral mixtures. Natural slimes were found to be much more difficult to disperse. This was attributed to the presence of cementing materials such as humic substances and Ai and Fe (hydr)oxide precipitates. Selective removal of these cementing materials resulted in good dispersion and partial separation. Further increase in separation of natural slime is likely determined by the presence of calcium on the clay surfaces, as was found for the artificial mixtures.

Geologic maps are indispensable tools in the modern search for mineral and fossil-fuel resources. They are the first essential step in understanding the lithologic nature and structure of rock units that form the land surface and that lie beneath it. They provide the basic foundation for planning mineral resource exploration programs and form the superstructure from which subsurface investigations are projected. In view of the economic application of such maps, the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the Federal Government entered a formal agreement in 1960 to map Kentucky geologically on a scale of 1:24, 000, or one inch map distance equals 2,000 feet on the ground. A 7. 5-minute quadrangle would comprise the unit map area. A resolution which urged the preparation of a new geological map of the entire State was passed by the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers in February 1959, and was presented to the Governor of Kentucky, the Legislative Research Commission, Kentucky Department of Economic Development (now Department of Commerce), Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, and Kentucky Geological Survey with a request for support and action. The request was subsequently endorsed and actively supported by numerous civic and professional societies as well as representatives of various facets of Kentucky government, commerce, and industry. Monies to initiate the program were appropriated by the next session of Kentucky legislature; this appropriation was matched by federal funds (Hagan, 1961). Kentucky's state-wide topographic mapping project was completed in 1956, just four years prior to starting the geologic mapping program. The recently completed modern 7. 5-minute, 1:24,000 topographic maps made ideal bases for plotting areal geology. Had they not been available, it is doubtful if a geo- logic mapping program so large and comprehensive could have been undertaken.
