The Cove gold-silver deposit is located 50 km southwest of Battle Mountain, Nevada and 1.5 km northeast of the McCoy Mine. Total proven and probable reserves are 48.7 Mt (53.7 Mst) with an average grade of 1.85 g/t (0.054 oz/st) Au and 87.1 g/t (2.54 oz/st) Ag. Mineralization is hosted by Triassic carbonate and siliciclastic rocks in two separate orebodies. Oxide ore consists of disseminated gold and silver in clay-altered, manganese-flooded limestone. Sulfide ore is dominated by pyrite-sphalerite-galena veins in siliciclastic rocks and sandy dolomite. Gold and silver occur in the native state, associated with the base metal sulfides. Mineralization is interpreted to be the distal expression of a porphyry system. The McCoy gold (copper) deposit is interpreted to be the proximal expression of the same system.

This paper describes the rationale for and some results from applying a statistically based approach to reagent testing in those flotation plants which still rely on experienced operators for manual flotation control.

Boliden Aktiebolag, the prime base metal mining company of Sweden, annually treats some 11-12 million tons of sulphide ore in nine concentrators. Its first flotation plant was established in the early thirties for the complex Boliden ore. Since then, the number of mines and plants has gradually increased. Considerable effort has been devoted to the development of all phases of the technology of ore prospecting, mining, milling, smelting and refining. This has been necessary due to the complex and low-grade ores. The development of concentration has mainly been directed toward the arts of grinding and flotation. During the forties and fifties, open-stage fine crushing followed by two-stage grinding in rod and ball mills with cyclone classification was successfully introduced and used throughout the plants. The increasing cost of grinding media led to studies of an autogenous grinding technique as early as 1945. Basic test work commenced during the early fifties, with a. number of ores tested for pebble grinding. In 1956 a new pilot plant was built, with equipment installed for the continuous testing of pebble grinding and, later, for primary autogenous grinding of run-of-mine ore. The intensive test work showed that pebble grinding was feasible in almost all of the plants. At this early stage of testing, however, the merits of autogenous grinding could not be fully evaluated. As a. consequence the rod mill/ball mill grinding systems were converted to rod mill/pebble mill systems whereever possible. As man searches unexplored horizons for new and economic industry, he must be constantly and acutely aware of the presence or absence of that precious commodity without which Industry, indeed Man himself, could not survive --W ATE R. The water requirements of the world today are magnanimous, considering that in 1960 the estimated consumption in the united States was over 300 billion GPD (1) or more than 1,700 GPD per person (5). The magnitude of the problem can be visualized as one considers that three times this quantity of water will be required in the united States by the year 2 000, when the dependable supplies of water are estimated to be only two-thirds of that required(2). How, then, can we continue to wreak such havoc on that life-sustaining substance -W ATE R? It is necessary, indeed mandatory, that those engaged in the Engineering profession consider it their moral obligation, not only to conserve the quantity of water which their conceived projects may require, but also to treat the effluent in order that the eutro-phication of natural water courses not be abnormally accelerated. The International Nickel Company of Canada Limited consumes some 33-1/2 millions of gallons of fresh water daily at its nine town-sites, fourteen mines and eight plants throughout the Sudbury district of Ontario. The present daily reuse of water exceeds 100 millions of gallons in the same area. It is noteworthy to mention that the milling rate has increased from 46,000 to 70,000 tons per day during the past five years, with no increase in water consumption. In fact, there has been a reduction in fresh water requirements.

Phase One of Copenhagen Metro opened on October 19th, 2002 and is already a great success. 11 stations are open and Phase Two with 6 additional stations will open during 2003. Phases One and Two include 21 km dual track, whereof 10 km is in tunnel. 17 stations (six deep, three shallow, and eight above ground) will service passengers with trains running at 90 seconds intervals. This paper will discuss the various aspects of the Metro, where construction methods include TBM bored, NATM, Cut & Cover, Secant Piles and Diaphragm Walls.

Respirable rock dust poses serious long-term health effects to workers in mining and tunneling underground hard rock environments. When inhaled, respirable silica particles commonly found in quartz and other minerals will scar sensitive lung tissue and cause irreversible lung diseases. Characteristics such as concentration, type of mineral, particle size, and particle shape inhaled can harm workers to various extents. Therefore, this study characterizes rock dust particles less than 100µm in aerodynamic diameter that are released from cutting hard rock in the underground mining environment. In this study, laboratory full scale cutting tests on samples of potash rock were performed with radial picks to generate dust. Three stages of pick wear were tested: new, moderately worn, and severely worn. Comparisons between different stages of pick wear to dust concentration, size distribution, and particle shape characteristics are drawn from this study to start determining the scenarios when the released airborne dusts become potentially most hazardous for workers. Although further testing needs to be conducted to make viable conclusions, the moderately worn pick, or the pick with the most blunt tip, in these experiments are potentially the most dangerous. The blunt pick tip released the highest concentration of dust and generated particle shapes with the highest aspect ratio compared to the other two picks. The preliminary results of this study allow for the further development of optimum bit management and maintenance systems to control the exposure of respirable dust to mine workers.

"INTRODUCTION The vision for a “Mine Escape Vehicle” (MEV) is to provide capabilities to better enable underground travel to allow miners to escape to safety in the event of a major mine emergency such as a fire or explosion. Enhanced transportation and survival capability such as a MEV may have minimized or eliminated the loss of life associated with several of the mine disasters that occurred in 2006, which together resulted in the deaths of 19 miners. Although the most desirable response in an emergency is for the miners exit the mine, if escape proved to be impossible, the miners could use the vehicle to proceed to an underground point of refuge to await rescue. Under a NIOSH contract issued in April 2008, Raytheon developed a conceptual vehicle design including (1) the capacity to provide life support functions for a number of miners, (2) operate in a reduced oxygen atmosphere with little or no visibility, and (3) travel at speeds faster than miners could walk out of the mine. The proposed MEV concept envisioned modification of a personnel carrier (a.k.a. a “mantrip”) that would be used every day during normal mine operations, not a specialized vehicle reserved only for or dedicated solely to escape. The MEV concept also included escape aids that are detachable from the vehicle in the event that the vehicle must be abandoned on the way out of the mine and the dismounted miners had to proceed on foot. To advance MEV development, NIOSH awarded a second contract in 2010 to Raytheon to build, test, and evaluate the performance of a proof-of-concept MEV that culminated in a 7-month performance evaluation of vehicle in an Eastern Kentucky coal mine (Figure 1). User feedback and lessons learned from the proof-of-concept vehicle evaluation provided support for the general MEV approach, guidance related to the practicality of MEV capabilities, and indication of specific technology shortcomings for this application."

The following material is excerpted from a presentation Mr. Morgan gave recently to representatives of the financial community. Introduction 1982 was a period of challenge for United States Gypsum Company because of reduced market opportunity. Housing starts for the first 10 months averaged a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1 million units, 9% below the comparable 1981 period when housing starts were the lowest in 35 years. Industry gypsum board shipments declined 9% from the already low levels of the same period in 1981. US Gypsum met the challenge with stringent cost reduction programs and aggressive action in the marketplace. In late 1981, anticipating market deterioration, the company's management adopted strategies to focus on two shortterm objectives: • Adjust operations to perform profitably in view of limited opportunities through more efficient operations and asset management. • Continue to strengthen U.S.G.'s resources and ability to take advantage of important market opportunities as the economy improves through selective expansion of production capacity in key growth markets. Concentration on these two objectives resulted in a nine month performance in 1982 that, while certainly not satisfactory by company standards, compared very favorably with that of principal competitors in terms of net earnings, margin on sales, and return on average stockholders' equity. To counteract limited market opportunities, U.S.G. focused on productivity improvement, cost reduction, expense control, and maximization of market penetration. Energy Use Improving performance encompassed all segments of operations. For example, efficient use of energy was a significant factor despite lower operating rates at most plants. Overall, in the third quarter of 1982 versus 1972, the company used 27% less energy per unit of production, a savings of $15 million in that quarter alone. These continuing improvements helped to partially offset constantly rising energy costs. A number of operations achieved superior results in the first nine months of the year compared with the same period in 1981. For example, gypsum board plants in Jacksonville, FL, and Sweetwater, TX, recorded 8% and 7% reductions, respectively, in energy use per unit of production. Paper mills in Oakfield, NY, Galena Park, TX, and Kansas City, MO, each reduced energy use more than 12%, while the Greenville, MS, ceiling products facility achieved a 16%o reduction. Safety Safety is another important element that received increased attention. U.S.G.'s safety performance over the past five years has consistently improved. In 1981 it was five times better than that of the gypsum industry; nearly 10 times better than all industry as measured by the National Safety Council; and almost 20 times better than all US manufacturing as recorded by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In addition to human concerns, this excellent record results in significant dollar savings that directly affect company results. In 1981, U.S.G.'s pre-tax savings in claims, premiums, and related expenses were about $20 million compared to the industries in which it competes. For the first half of 1982 performance improved further, with a cumulative lost workday incidence rate per 200,000 man-hours worked of only 0.27, an all-time record. In 1992, 48 million tons of fly ash (not including bottom ash, boiler slag and FGD material) was produced in the United States, according to the American Coal Ash Association. Of this amount, 27.2% was utilized; although the percentage of fly ash utilized increased from 20% in 1980, there is significant potential to increase utilization. One of the primary driving forces behind increased utilization is increased disposal costs due to more stringent environmental controls and regulation. Fly ash is classified as a natural pozzolan and finds significant use as a cement additive. It has been found to increase the plasticity of the cement mixture while lowering the amount of mix water needed. In addition to improving leveling and finishing properties, fly ash improves pumpability as well as decreases the heat of hydration of the concrete mix which is particularly important in massive concrete structures such as dams where the concrete needs to cool as quickly as possible. The Loss on Ignition (LOI) of fly ash is an important quality when considering utilization. The LOI is primarily due to the presence of unburned carbon and the standard specifications for the use of fly ash as a mineral admixture in Portland cement concrete are given in ASTM C618-89a. which sets an LOI limit of 6%. However, many states have set a more stringent limit of 3%. The primary reason for the lower LOI specification is that carbon adsorbs air entraining agents which limits freeze-thaw resistance. This is particularly important in climates such as the midwestern US where multiple cycles of freezing and thawing are typical in winter.

As resources are depleted in coal mines, isolated support pillars are often mined. Cemented paste backfill has been used to provide support during the mining of these pillars due to its safe and green mining characteristics. However, traditional cemented paste backfill mining has some shortcomings, such as poor adaptability to geological structure, leakage of paste during filling, imperfect roof-contact in partially backfilled areas, and insufficient roof strata support before the backfill reaches its design strength. This paper presents the results of a case study where L-shaped interval cemented paste backfill technology has been safely used to mine an isolated coal panel beneath existing surface structures. This backfilling method has the advantages of preventing paste leakage, improving the backfilled ratio, reducing surface subsidence, and strongly adapting to geological structure. During this field application, the setting pressure of the backfill shield reached 20 MPa, the compressive strength of the backfilling body reached 2.0 MPa, and the backfilled ratio reached 93.7%. Observational ground monitoring showed that roof-to-floor convergence in adjacent roadways ranged from 132 to 167 mm. No obvious fractures or separations in the overlying strata were observed by a borescope. The maximum surface subsidence was 342 mm, the subsidence factor was 0.136, and the damage to surface buildings was within Grade I (slight damage). This case study clearly demonstrates that the L-shaped interval cemented paste backfill method can be safely used to mine the isolated coal panel beneath surface buildings.

A recent study by the National Academy of Engineering concluded that if the U.S. Coal Industry is to double production by 1985 it must open 30 new 2,000,000 tons per year surface mines in the eastern states and 100 new 5,000,000 tons per year surface mines in the western states, in addition to major growth in underground mining. Major expansions in coal mining are also planned in other countries. Engineering geology can play an important part in coal mine development, operation and abandonment (Table I), and with the increasing scale of surface coal mining and the requirements of environmental legislation, it seems certain that engineering geology and geotechnics will play a growing role in surface coal mining.

The recent mine disasters in Australian coal mines have initiated an introduction of Self-Contained Self-Rescuer (SCSR) as component in the development of new escape strategies for miners. These self-contained self-rescuers are closed circuit, demand sensitive breathing apparatus that make oxygen available to the wearer for a nominal period of time. Their operation is completely independent of the surrounding atmosphere. Once properly donned, the SCSR can assist a miner to escape from an area containing smoke, toxic gases or an oxygen deficient atmosphere. The duration of a typical SCSR is usually taken at the point of complete collapse of the breathing bag which is accompanied by an increase in breathing resistance and inhaled levels of carbon dioxide. Because the oxygen consumption (V02) and the heart rate are correlated, a prediction of V02 and consequently the duration of an SCSR can be made by monitoring the heart rate. Thirty-seven volunteers participated in field simulated escape trials at four underground coal mines. The results from the field trials suggested that oxygen consumption depends on the heart rate, the body weight and exercise rating of the miner. All the volunteers were asked to fill out the questionnaires to evaluate the performance of the units. The miners indicated that they could tolerate the inhaled temperature without any difficulty to breathing resistance. A complete statistical analysis of the field results is also presented.

Future ore reserves of major gold producers in North America and elsewhere will consist of refractory gold ores. About 60 % of the current U.S. gold production is mined in Nevada. Several of the large gold operations in this state indicate that 40 to 90 % of their future ore feeds will contain refractory gold. To compound problems, average head grades for refractory U.S. gold ores have fallen from 8 - 9 g/mt to about 4 g/mt by 1991. In Latin America, 52 % of the gold operations will require milling for optimal recovery. Deeper reserves are, like in North America, refractory. Particularly in hard, (semi)refractory sulfide ores, many operations may experience substantial decreases of gold recov­ery. For example, Martins et al. (1991) report that at an Austra­lian mine, sulfide ore treatment led to 4 - 10 % lower gold reco­veries as the work index increased from 8 kWh/t to 14 kWh/t and the grind coarsened. Many refractory ores should actually be classified as semirefractory since a fine sulfide fracturing and liberation would make 80 - 90 % of the gold cyanide leachable. However, conventional comminution is often prohibitively expensive for these ore types.

The complex mineralogy of the Porgera resource has a pronounced effect on process selection for the recovery of refractory gold and silver. Intimate association of gold with pyrite necessitates a high degree of sulphur preoxidation in order to achieve acceptable levels of gold recovery. Acid pressure oxidation has been demonstrated to be the only commercially proven process capable of achieving the required level of pyrite oxidation. Gangue mineralization dictates preconcentration of the sulphides to limit the acid consuming capacity and carbon dioxide generation during oxidation. However, the relationship between concentrate sulphur grade and gold recovery to concentrate ultimately governs the optimum degree of sulphide preconcentration.

In the aftermath of the September 11th attack on the World Trade Center, groundwater control was of immediate concern. Water in?ow from the adjacent Hudson River through the compromised slurry wall ‘bathtub’ surrounding the site, ruptured water and sewer mains, and saturation from fire hoses all contributed to an already critical situation, further hampering the recovery and rehabilitation effort. An extensive pumping and deep well installation program was initiated, focused on reducing the hydrostatic loading to the severely damaged perimeter slurry wall.

To most of you present here the word "refractories" is not new and you are familiar with the materials and use. To many people though the question is asked, "What are refractoriness and what are they used for?" Refractories are non-metallic products which are so resistant too melting at very high temperatures that they can be used for building or lining furnaces of all kinds. A large variation occurs in the size, form, and composition depending on the service for which they are intended. They are made from a wide variety of raw materials, of which fire clay and quartzite are used in largest quantities. Other refractory raw materials include magnesite, chrome, diaspore, bauxite, kyanite, sillimanite, olivine, zircon, and many others. Most of these are assembled from-widely-'separated points in the United States while others come from the far corners of the earth. Chrome is imported from the Philippines and South Africa, and, to a lesser extent, Turkey and Greece Kyanite and sillimanite come: from India and bauxite from the Guianas. And there's "magnesite from brines," produced in chemical plant's by treatment of sea water or inland deep-well brines with hydrated lime. The proportion of magnesia available in sea water is so small, less than one pound from 500 pounds of water,, that millions of gallons must be pumped and processed each day in a sea water magnesite plant. The realm of refractory raw materials, therefore, is very extensive and continues to grow because of the endeavor to find-better raw materials from which to produce better products for refractory service.

Washington State has a variety of industrial minerals and although not many are produced currently (1982) most have a history of production (table 1). The value of industrial minerals produced in the state exceeds by several times the production value of metallic minerals. In 1981, 15 minerals - cement, limestone, clay, gemstone, pumice, sand and gravel, stone, diatomite, gypsum, olivine, peat, talc, garnet, silica, and dolomite - were produced. Combined value of nonmetallic production for 1981 is estimated at $218,999,000. Cement had the largest estimated value at $102 million, followed by sand and gravel at $47 million, and crushed stone at $29 million. These figures are from the US. In a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Department of Energy, laboratory column-flotation tests were conducted to evaluate fluorosurfactants as selective fine coal flotation collectors. A Middle Kittaning seam coal responded to flotation with both anionic and nonionic fluorosurfactants. These fluorosurfactants were no more selective than MIBC alone. However, for increasing coal yields, nonionic fluorosurfactant systems did not increase total sulfur and ash contents as sharply as MIBC systems. Flotation selectivity also improved slightly when a combined anionic fluorosurfactant-MIBC system was used in acidic pulps (pH < 3.6). While the fluorosurfactants examined will not likely have direct application in current coal flotation practice, other fluorosurfactant systems could eventually prove beneficial for floating fine coals.

The Don River & Central Waterfront Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel (CBT) Project in Toronto will extend approximately 10.5 km from Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant west under Lake Shore Boulevard, north under Bayview Avenue and east through the Don River park area to the Coxwell Ravine Park. The tunnel is currently being mined by using a shielded dual-mode tunnel boring machine (open and close) capable of operating in EPB mode and lined by using a precast concrete segmental tunnel linear with an internal diameter of 6,300 mm and external diameter of 6,900 mm. The CBT is expected to be excavated mainly through shale bedrock of the Georgian Bay Formation, at approximately 50 meters deep. The tunnel crosses a buried bedrock valley in two locations, in the southern portion of the alignment, adjacent to the Don River, and at the northern portion of the alignment approaching the CX-1 shaft. In these two locations, the bedrock cover is expected to be less than 6 meters. The risk of encountering weathered bedrock, significant ground water inflows or surficial soil deposits through these buried valleys was identified during the design phase. The contract required the TBM to be designed with the ability to probe drill ahead of the TBM and convert to EPB mode if necessary, to cross this area. This paper will discuss the additional exploration that was performed by the contractor to identify the extent of this buried valley, the plan going into the zone of potential weathered shale, and the actual conditions encountered.
