Respect for the people is one of the main values of S&B. Such respect needs to be manifested by actions ensuring the bodily and spiritual integrity of personnel in pursuing their work. The ultimate target is to achieve zero accidents by developing the culture and infrastructure required to support it. Within this framework, the following proactive safety practices were introduced in 2004 and are implemented at S&B Greek sites: (a.) Management Safety Visits (MSVs) of shop floor operations to address safety attributes of work guidelines, (b.) Monitoring compliance with critical work guidelines, using a ?safety barometer? tool. The proactive nature of both above systems, facilitates communication with employees on safety behaviors and their adoption in our facilities at Milos and Fokis, has been successful. Above all, these practices corroborate the management?s concern for the people and its commitment to continuously improve the working environment.

A continuous on-line particle size analysis system for solid/liquid suspensions is described. The basic sensor utilizes a centrifugal principle to separate particles according to size, the resultant separation being measured by means of beta-ray attenuation. Results obtained when analyzing a variety of materials at sizes from 65 mesh (210 microns) to 20 microns are discussed in de- tail. Accuracies better than 2% are demonstrated. The effects of particle specific gravity, and mixtures of materials of diverse specific gravities, are discussed from a practical and theoretical viewpoint. It is demonstrated that particle specific gravity has a minimal effect on the size reading obtained. This renders the instrument suitable for handling materials where the ratio of light to heavy component may change. The design of the first commercial installation of this instrument is described in detail. This installation will be capable of analyzing three streams in sequence, measurement at three particle sizes being effected on each stream.

Can the United States mining industry achieve its long-stated goal of zero fatalities ? and what will it take to do so? Does it require new laws and regulations, as some propose, and a continuation of the commandand- control model that has been born out of more than 40 years of regulation and enforcement under the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1969? Or, is it time to consider a new model to manage safety and health and drive continuous, sustained improvement? These are questions that many are debating as mine safety performance, while improved, appears mired in a trough where improvement followed by declines seems to have become the rule rather than the exception. Without doubt, U.S. mines have made significant progress in safety performance during the last four decades, yet the stalled decline in fatality numbers, the industry?s report card of its success or failure, has led some to question whether the industry will achieve zero fatalities in U.S. mining by relying solely on the Mine Act?s framework and implementing its regulations. These are questions the CEO-led task force, set up by the National Mining Association (NMA), considered as it sought to identify impediments to zero fatalities posed by the current regulatory regime. Out of that effort came CORESafety, a common safety and health framework that relies on a management system approach to improve safety and health performance. The goal of CORESafety is to achieve zero fatalities and a 50-percent reduction in the rate of injuries in U.S. mining within five years ? 0:50:5. CORESafety is built on the plan-do-checkact model, which has been successfully deployed by industries, mining and nonmining alike, to drive continuous improvement in safety and health performance. The improvements in safety performance that can be achieved by shifting from a command-and-control regulatory approach to a risk-based systems approach built on the plando- check-act model have been documented in numerous industries. For example, the United Kingdom quarrying industry (Fig. 1), not satisfied with the number of reportable accidents being experienced 1995-2000, established a hard target of a 50-percent reduction in the number of reportable accidents during the period 2001- 2005. Having met this target, the industry then established a further target zero for the period 2006-2010. The mechanism to achieve these reductions? The plan-do-check-act model.

The coal reserves in the United States are estimated to be in excess of 300 billion recoverable tons, and current projections of energy requirements indicate our increased dependence upon these reserves. The Department of Energy's Energy Outlook for 1984 projects that coal consumption in the United States will increase from 737 million tons in 1983 to 958 million tons in 1990, and then to 1,110 million tons in 1995 (Table 1). As shown in this table, the future utilization of coal in the United States is closely tied to the electric utility market, a market that consumes about 85% of the coal produced. Be- cause of this dependence on the utility market, the uncertainties of new environmental regulations, particularly those concerning sulfur emissions, could have a significant adverse impact on future coal demands in the United States. SULFUR IN U.S. COALS Most of the Nation's coal reserves contain too much sulfur to be fired directly and meet existing emission control standards. In Table 2, the sulfur contents of the coals of the eastern United States are summarized by sulfur levels according to regions. While the coals of some of the eastern regions are predominantly high in sulfur content, it is important to recognize that large tonnages of coal with relatively lower sulfur content are available in these regions. Furthermore, an often significant portion of the sulfur occurs in the form of iron sulfide (Fes2 or pyrite). Because pyrite occurs as discrete particles of high specific gravity, it can often be removed by simple, inexpensive physical coal beneficiation techniques after being liberated by stage crushing. The potential for physical removal of pyrite by conventional specific gravity processes combined with stage crushing is summarized in Table 3 on a regional basis.

This paper describes the geology of the Kalamazoo copper orebody discovered in the course of an exploration project carried out by Quintana Minerals Corporation under the author's direction in an area immediately southwest of the San Manuel mine, Pinal County, Arizona. In the period 1943-1947, exploration projects were carried out in the San Manuel area by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and Magma Copper Company which resulted in the development of the San Manuel underground block-cave mine which is now in production at a rate of 41, 000 tons per day. Mining claims covering the area immediately west of the San Manuel orebody were staked in 1946 by Frank F. Salas, R. A. Buzan, H. G. Buzan, and W. C. Buzan of Mammoth, Arizona. These claims were optioned to Martha Purcell in 1946, and in the period of 1947-1958 seven churn drill holes ranging in depth from 1,400 to 2,950 feet were drilled by Mrs. Purcell. These holes did not intersect ore and no further deep exploration was attempted prior to the Quintana Minerals project which began in August, 1965, and which is described in this report. The Kalamazoo deposit is in Sections 3, 4, 9, and 10, T 9 S, R 16 E, Pinal County, Arizona, and it is reached by driving seven miles east from Oracle, Arizona (Figure 1) . The western industrial world has to rely more and more on complex polymetallic sulphide ores as sources for base metals. These ores are composed of fine grained sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and marcasite. The liberation sizes of the individual minerals can range between 30 um and 5 um. Therefore, applying conventional techniques to recover these finely disseminated minerals usually results in unsatisfactory metallurgical performances with high losses of the valuable mineral to the slime , fraction of the tailing. New concepts for treating these polymetallic complex ores are discussed in this paper. Beneficiation techniques utilizing new reagents and a new approach to pulp preparation are described. Some of these techniques were applied to ores from existing concentrators as well as to new ores. The results of these studies are discussed in the following sections.

INTRODUCTION The LG-2 project is one element of the La Grande Complex, an integrated development of hydro-electric potential being constructed in north-western Quebec by the James Bay Energy Corporation. The project is located on the La Grande River about 65 miles east of Fort George on the James Bay coast and 600 miles north of Montreal. It comprises a 525 foot high dam, 81,000 feet of dykes, spillway and river diversion works and a 16 unit underground powerhouse that will have an installed capacity of 5,328 MW. The power installations at LG-2 represent approximately half of the total potential for the complex. When completed in 1982, LG-2 will rank as the largest underground powerhouse in the world. Studies and site explorations for the project were begun in 1971, construction commenced in 1973 and the roll date for the first machine is scheduled for February, 1980. GENERAL ARRANGEMENT OF POWER INSTALLATIONS As shown in Figure 1, the power installations are located on the south bank of the river about 4 miles downstream from the main dam. The general arrangement of the complex is presented in Figures 2 and 3. The intake structure consists of 2 groups of 8 gated intakes separated by a central service area. Sixteen 26 foot diameter in-

The use of an integrated software package to simulate and optimize the performance of mineral processing circuits is illustrated by three examples. Each represents application of the software and associated techniques to optimization of an existing plant. In the first example, a South-western U. S. copper company employs the method to simulate and improve performance in crushing, screening and SAG milling. A second copper producer evaluates equipment changes and flowsheet alternatives in a closed-circuit ball mill-cyclone operation. A Southeastern U. S. aluminum refinery optimizes performance of a dry milling and classification circuit for production of carbon particles used in anode casting. Graphical and tabular data describe the circuits simulated and the results achieved in each example.

The LA Effluent Outfall Tunnel is the first tunnel in the United States to incorporate post- tensioning into the precast segmental lining. Several unique components were integrated to ensure that the post tensioning could be carried out successfully in the tunnel, even concurrently with the TBM excavation. This also required the development of new processes both in the casting facility and in the TBM to ensure that the almost 3,700 rings could be successfully manufactured, threaded, stressed, and grouted. This paper will discuss the material selection, fabrication, and installation of, as well as lessons learned from, this first in country tunnel lining.

Excessive heat exposure is among the health and safety hazards that have adverse effects on the mine workers. The very nature of the underground climate makes it a convenient avenue for heat generation and accumulation from several heat sources including autocompression, equipment, and heat from strata. This study investigated the effects of clothing insulation and acclimation on the thermal comfort ofmineworkers who are exposed to heat in underground working environments. Several clothing ensembles have been considered to analyze the effect of the thermal resistance of clothing on the thermal comfort of workers. To investigate the impact of the clothing insulation, the thermal comfort limit of an underground miner was calculated in the form of maximum allowable exposure time for an 8-h shift. Parametric analyses were subsequently performed using an already developed thermal comfort model using MATLAB software. The results demonstrate that clothing insulation has a significant effect on the thermal comfort of mine workers. Increase in the clothing insulation decreases the maximum allowable exposure time of mine workers. This is especially true for the new and non-acclimated workers. Since acclimatized workers can tolerate a higher level of the dehydration and are capable of losing more water by sweat per shift, the maximum allowable exposure time for the acclimated workers are higher than non-acclimated workers. These analyses have shown that acclimated workers can have more continuous work per shift compared with non-acclimated workers. For example, in an environmental condition with clothing that a nonacclimated worker cannot work more than 5 h, an acclimated worker can work a full 8-h shift.

The 500-kt/a (550,000-stpy) refinery in Burnside, LA, owned by Almatis Inc. produced specialty alumina used in the abrasives, ceramics, chemical and refractory industries. The 1.2-Mt/a (1.32 million-stpy) refinery in Gramercy, LA, owned by Noranda Alumina LLC produced alumina mostly for use in aluminum smelters but also produced specialty alumina. An upgrade project at the Gramercy refinery to convert 200 kt/a (220,000 stpy) of capacity to produce more profitable specialty alumina was completed in the first half of 2018, and another project to increase capacity was started but a completion schedule was not available. The amount of new capacity was not disclosed, but it would be used to produce nonmetallurgical grade alumina. The 2.3-Mt/a (2.5 million-stpy) refinery in Point Comfort, TX, which was temporarily shut down in March 2016, remained closed throughout the year."

The Jiboia heavy mineral sands deposit is a new discovery associated with the São Francisco River delta on the northern coast of Sergipe state. The identified resources are part of the much larger mineralized trend. Mineralization is hosted in paleodunes deposited on Holocene marine terraces (Fig. 1). The dunes are up to 30 m above sea level, and mineralization occur from 6 m above sea level upward. The main ore minerals constitute pseudorutile, ilmenite, zircon, rutile and monazite. This work presents a thorough characterization of the mineralogy and granulometric distribution of the Jiboia orebody.

The Underground Construction Association?s (UCA) 2014 North American Tunneling (NAT) conference is expected to attract about 1,000 tunneling and underground construction professionals. With the theme ?Mission Possible,? attendees from around the world will hear the latest in tunneling and underground construction technology in the two-and-a-half days of technical sessions. The meeting is scheduled for June 24-27 at the JW Marriott Los Angeles Live in Los Angeles, CA. In addition to the technical programming, the accompanying exhibit has attracted 143 exhibitors in 162 booths. And the conference will offer short courses and plenty of social activities that will provide attendees the opportunity to catch up with each other. In addition, a proceedings volume containing all of the 128 papers will be available. An impressive lineup of sponsors will help attendees enjoy the conference. Terminology. The term potash originated in "pot ashes" produced by burning wood to ashes in iron pots and then leaching out the soluble salts, chiefly potassium carbonate, from the residue. In modern usage potash is a generic term for various potassium salts used in agriculture and industry. More specifically, it denotes the oxide of potassium, K2O, and the content of potassium in ores and products is stated as weight percent of K2O present. Its salts are commonly referred to as muriate of potash, sulfate of potash, etc. The presence of an adequate supply of available potassium in the soil promotes the health and improves the quality of the plant. insures greater efficiency in photosynthesis, increases resistance to certain diseases, offsets the effect of an oversupply of nitrogen, and helps the plant to utilize soil moisture more advantageously. ("Soils and Men," U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Yearbook 1938.) Occurrence. Potassium ranks seventh among the elements in abundance. It is estimated to constitute some 2.6% of the lithosphere and is found in soluble forms in the oceans, lakes, rivers, and subsurface waters. It is also an important constituent of plant and animal life. Commercially significant accumulations of potassium salts occur in underground deposits formed in past geologic times by evaporation of ancient bodies of saltwater, inland drainage basins, and shallow sea lagoons. The potash content of such waters was the end result of weathering and leaching of insoluble potash-bearing aluminosilicates, such as feldspars, micas, leucitcs, and others. The concentrations of potassium salts in the natural brines of some lakes in the arid and semiarid regions of the continents are also important as sources of potash; the brines of the Dead Sea in Asia Minor, the Great Salt Lake in Utah, and Searles Lake in California typify such concentrations. Every continent has major potash deposits as listed in Table 1 adopted from Cawley.1

"INTRODUCTION Molybdenite is typically produced as a co-product in the copper ore flotation process. At the Rio Tinto Kennecott Concentrator (RTKC) in Copperton, Utah, the molybdenite is initially floated with copper sulfides and other value minerals producing a Cu-Mo concentrate. This is then separated in the molybdenum plant by depressing copper sulfides and pyrite and floating only molybdenite. The molybdenum plant in RTKC comprises the rougher circuit and several stages of cleaning to achieve a certain grade requirement of Mo. The rougher circuit is where the first stage of separation occurs. Cu sulfides and pyrite are depressed in the rougher circuit by adding NaSH under nitrogen and in the cleaner circuit by adding NaSH under air. The depression of Cu sulfides (and pyrite) by NaSH is related to the redox activity1. It is important therefore to maintain a reducing potential in the circuit in order to achieve effective Cu-Mo separation. If the rougher circuit is under air, like RTKC’s molybdenum cleaner circuits, it is harder to maintain the target redox potential because NaSH oxidizes rapidly in the presence of air thereby increasing NaSH consumption significantly. CU-MO SEPARATION AND ROLE OF PULP POTENTIAL The collector adsorption on copper sulfide minerals is through an electrochemical mechanism2. The collector changes the surface chemistry of the Cu mineral allowing it to float. Molybdenite, or MoS2, on the other hand, floats readily in the presence of a frother as it is naturally hydrophobic. Usually, hydrocarbon oil extenders such as diesel or burner oil are added to enhance Mo recovery. In order to effectively separate Cu from Mo, the collector complex on the copper surface needs to be destabilized or desorbed using a reducing agent such as NaSH or Nokes. As long as the circuit is under highly reducing conditions, the collector remains detached from the sulfide mineral surface allowing Cu sulfide depression. Therefore, it is important to measure the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) continually and maintain the reducing condition with addition of NaSH. For a given collector each mineral will have a characteristic potential or electrochemical window for flotation to occur3, therefore, it is necessary to reduce the potential outside of this window in order to effectively separate Cu and Fe sulfides from MoS2 minerals2. In RTKC plant, the target reducing condition is between -450 to -550 mV to effectively destabilize the collector and depress Cu and Fe minerals. Typically the dosage of NaSH used in the molybdenum plant could range from 6 to 30 gallons/min (gpm). The high dosage of NaSH could pose risk of H2S exposure. RTKC wanted to evaluate alternatives to NaSH in order to reduce its consumption and minimize risk of H2S gas generation."

Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation's (KACC) entrance into the alumina market began in 1946 with the purchase of a small plant in Baton Rouge. Louisiana. Since that time KACC has been involved with the design, construct; on, and operation of many alumina plants around the world. One of these plants is located in Gramercy, Louisiana. The Gramercy Works is a multiplant installation consisting of an alumina plant, a caustic-chlorine plant, a petroleum coke calciner and a fluorochemicals plant. Each of these plants require their own specific environmental control programs to abate pollution. Kaiser has made significant progress through the years on their own initiative in pollution control. But many new challenges have been and continue to be created with the enactment of environmental laws. The 1970 Clean Air Act Amendments, the resurrection of the old "Refuse Act" in 1970 and finally the 1972 Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments prompted the formulation of our current philosophy towards the abatement of pollution. Since the formulation of these complicated pieces of legislation, others equally complicated, have come to being. The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act as amended by the Federal Environmental Pesticide Control Act of October, 1972, the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976, the Solid Waste Disposal and Resource Recovery Act of 1976 and the Safe Drinking Water Act sighed in December of 1974 have all contributed to the challenge for an alumina plant to meet regulatory constraints. However, this paper will only discuss the alumina plant?s environmental programs designed to meet compliance with air and water pollution legislation. At the Gramercy Alumina Plant, over $25 million has been spent for pollution control since 1969. The Gramercy Plant is a prime example of KACC's commitment to meeting the environmental challenge.

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations. New Mexico leads U.S. domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica and decorative stone. New Mexico also has the potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REEs), niobium and zircon, and other REE deposits are being explored. REE-thoriumuranium veins have been found in the Gallinas, Capitan and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Exploration for beryllium has occurred in the Ojo Caliente No. 2, Cuchillo Negro and Victorio mining districts. Companies also are examining high-calcium limestone and high-magnesium dolomite for potential development, while aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. IntroductionIndustrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life. They are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics to refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate nearly every aspect of daily life, their presence and their roles are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the nonmetallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a byproduct of cleaning natural gas, one of the world’s major energy fuels.Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 41 percent of the more than $3.1 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2014 (Table 1). In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations (New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division, 2015a). New Mexico leads U.S. domestic production in potash, perlite, zeolite and travertine. The La Fontaine Tunnel in Montreal, Quebec is currently undergoing major structural rehabilitation work and systems upgrade work to comply with current codes, standards and best practices in fire life safety and to extend its lifespan of this 55-year-old immersed tube tunnel for at least another 40 years. The paper discusses design consideration of ongoing works that include structural analyses to evaluate repair strategies for the post-tensioned reinforced caissons, the scheme to repair two leaky joints between caissons, the design of passive fire protection that involved in situ and real scale laboratory tests, and other tunnel systems upgrades.

The aim of this study is to compare amino acids and organic acids in the extraction of gold from silicate ore. Amino acids were found to have higher efficiency of gold extraction than organic acids at the same acid concentration, which is likely due to amino acids having both carboxylic and amine groups in their structure, while organic acids only have carboxylic groups. Five amino acids (glycine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, lysine and tryptophan) and seven organic acids (citric, malic, tataric, fumaric, oxalic, succinic and ascorbic acids) were selected to investigate gold extraction efficiency. Aspartic acid was found to have greater capacity to extract gold than succinic acid. The optimal gold to aspartic acid molar ratio was 1:6, and low concentrations of aspartic acid extracted 35 to 42 percent of gold from silicate ore within 15 days. Further studies are needed to increase gold leaching and reduce incubation time. The results imply that aspartic acid can be used as an alternative reagent to traditional methods for extracting gold from ore. This method is nontoxic to humans, is environmentally friendly and can have real applications.

Computers are a valuable tool to the aggregate industry and should not be overlooked. The selection of proper mechanical components is necessary. Merely the addition of a computer to operate a mechanical system will not guarantee that the system will work. Material delivery by rail or truck for stock-piling and intra-plant material transfer can be accurately supervised by automation with simplified controls for the layman to use. There are mechanical problems that occur in material blending and load-out systems when such a system is automated. Such things as material flow, bridging, stockpiling methods, overloading of equipment and safety must be considered. How these problems can be overcome by proper selection of compatible mechanical and computer equipment will be discussed. Also, there are many individual material circuits in a plant that can be computerized at a nominal cost. This type of computer installation will not necessarily result in increased production, but it will produce greater efficiency in manpower. These small computers, binary counters, memory circuits and other devices and their application to the aggregate industry will also be presented. A careful evaluation of the mechanical and computer inter-relationship by someone understanding both "Rocks and Electronics" is essential to proper handling of material by computers. Computers for the mining industry may be either digital or analog computers. Unless the computer is to control some type of chemical process, such as a cement plant, the, analog computer is not required and the digital computer' will be quite adequate and less expensive.
