The Supervisory Computer System at Cities Service copper mine and concentrator at Miami, Arizona was installed at Pinto Valley in the spring of 1975. Design and specification [l] of the digital system was initiated jointly by key plant personnel at Pinto Valley and staff of Cities Service Research and Development Company. The Pinto Valley digital system [2] may be classified as a supervisory control system of hierarchical design. There are three fully independent satellite computers which retrieve and reduce the raw plant data from each of the three main operating areas - the primary crushing plant, the fine crushing plant, and the grinding and flotation plant. While the three satellite computers are core resident systems, the master computer is a disc-based operating system which also interfaces with a computer controlled on-stream x-ray analyzer system. Figure 1 illustrates the basic system configuration [3]. The software systems required to support a large system are quite diverse and vary greatly in function. The philosophy followed in dividing the software into three categories was designed to: 1) fully utilize existing process knowledge of technical staff; 2) delegate certain software tasks to outside sources already skilled and trained in software development; and 3) maintain final control over the design and operation of each system.

Tunnels and underground projects are inherently more risky than vertical projects, which typically utilize more conventional design and construction approaches and are undertaken in the context of relatively ascertained and defined conditions. On tunnel and under-ground projects, there are a host of special risk factors, including unknowns and uncertainties as to the physical and behavioral characteristics of the ground, the inextricable interdependence and necessary interaction of design decisions and construction means and methods with those ground conditions as well as the manner in which risks are allocated among project participants for un-anticipated subsurface conditions. Public-private partnerships (PPP) projects, in their own respects (and independent of any major subsurface component), pose significant risk for all private sector participants. The main driver of owners to procure projects using PPP is financial, as often all, or substantially all, of the design and construction risk are transferred to the private sector consortium, including the design-build (D-B) team. For a concerning number of those public owners, that risk transfer regime includes rather onerous and aggressive contractual terms that allocate to the private sector participants substantially all risks associated with the encountering of unanticipated subsurface conditions. These aggressive risk allocation provisions, while directly impacting project participants upstream of the consulting engineer, have an indirect and corresponding risk intensifying effect upon consulting engineer professional liability exposure. There are many factors that result in increased professional liability exposure for consulting engineers involved in PPP projects. The more prominent and prevalent of those factors fall into the following categories:

The management of mine tailings poses a complex range of potential risks, including physical risks, such as the risk of catastrophic failure of a tailings facility and chemical risks such as the risk of long-term leaching of contaminants into the downstream environment. If these risks materialize, they can lead to a wide range of impacts on people and the environment, including human fatalities and severe impacts on downstream ecosystems, and the costs of recovery borne by industry, communities, governments, and society as a whole can be immense. Tailings facility failures in Canada (2014), Brazil (2015 and 2019), South Africa (2022), and in other locations around the world underscore how high the stakes are when mines produce and manage tailings (WISE Uranium Project 2019). Understandably, many people do not trust the mining industry to manage tailings responsibly. As an industry, it is our responsibility to manage tailings in a manner that is responsible and strives to minimize harm associated with tailings management, including effectively managing both the physical and chemical risks associated with tailings. Standards have an important role to play in responsible tailings management by setting expectations for standards of care and providing a means to measure and report on performance. In jurisdictions with strong legal requirements for tailings management, standards play a complementary role, pushing performance improvements in areas that may be difficult or impossible to address in legal requirements. In jurisdictions where legal requirements are lagging, standards may represent the de facto leading practice and may be the primary tool to help ensure responsible tailings management. Implementation of standards can help companies demonstrate that tailings are being responsibly managed and help build trust and credibility. Most importantly though, standards are important tools to help ensure that the risks associated with tailings are reduced, and that remaining risks are effectively managed. However, we must recognize that conformance with standards can have a down-side – the proverbial two-edged sword. Having standards is vital but there is a risk that implementing standards becomes a “box checking” exercise, with ongoing conformance leading to complacency. We must not allow ourselves to fall into the trap of believing that, just because we are complying with applicable standards and laws, we are therefore doing our best, and that “it can’t happen to us.” In addition, if conformance becomes the goal and the standard does not have mechanisms to drive continual improvement, then once the standard is met, there may be no incentive to improve. The point of complying with standards is not to pass the test. The point is to manage tailings responsibly, prevent catastrophic failures, and minimize harm. The point is to do better, because we must do better. To do that, we need to strive not for conformance, but for excellence in tailings management, driven by continual improvement and a quest to do better.

In recent years, the diminishing supply of natural gas has led energy suppliers and consumers to consider making synthetic natural gas from coal. A number of processes have been devised to produce gas from coal; many of these have been operated at the pilot stage and some have been operated commercially. Each process has specific coal feed stock requirements with respect to size consist and moisture content. The purpose of this presentation is to compare the estimated costs for coal handling, live storage, size reduction and drying facilities that would be required for delivery of coal feedstock to different gasification processes.

Discussion by A.E Agnew Strachan's paper summarizes a wealth of data on water-storage dam "incidents" published by USCOLD and ASCE in 1988, together with a review of tailings-dam incidents published by USCOLD in 1994. The data is summarized by text and 11 histograms. The histograms present a useful compilation of these data, although the patterns within the histogram blocks did not survive the Mining Engineering printing process - so their usefulness is impaired. Unfortunately, the text discussion is too cursory and does not highlight the significant relationships among the various causes of the incidents. Four paragraphs of text and Fig. 1 were devoted to water-storage dams, but the discussion is too sketchy, and Fig. 1 is unclear. Important statistics that could be uncovered are: •the total number of dam incidents tabulated were 500+, •earth embankments constituted 73% of those in operation and •incidents related to earth embankments were 75%, of which dam failures accounted for 24%, major repairs accounted for 42% and accidents accounted for 34%. Strachan concluded that "the majority of the dam failures are associated with overtopping (p. 49), and that the majority of incidents are associated with spillway and other facility structures" - although this is difficult to discern from Fig. 1. Confusion regarding Strachan's use of the terms "dam failures" and "incidents" is compounded by his use of "failures" and "accidents" in one paragraph of his Introduction section followed by his use of "incidents" in the next paragraph. Getting to the meat of Strachan's important paper, the tailings-dam incident survey (USCOLD, 1994), the connection between Figs 2 through 11 seems obscure. First, in the four paragraphs of introductory material, one learns that "incidents consisted of failures, accidents, seepage and other incidents of performance that did not meet design criteria" (p. 50). One does learn the helpful caveat that "structures not related to mill tailings were not included in the review" - so that the Buffalo Creek (West Virginia in 1972) and Aberfan (Wales in 1966) coal-mine failures, together with the ongoing metal-mine remediation work at Summitville (Colorado) do not muddy the waters of his paper. The all-too-brief discussion of the data shown in Figs. 3 through 11 (185 dams in USCOLD plus 26 dams in UNEP) reveals the following: •Figure 3: 57% of the incidents (failures and accidents) occurred with dams less than 20-m (66-ft) in height. •Figure 4: 63% of the incidents were due to failures alone (subset of Fig. 3). •Figure 5: Active dams had 82% of the accidents and 93% of the failures. •Figure 6: Types of dams (upstream, water-retention, downstream, centerline and "unknown") separated according to incidents. •Figure 7: Breaks out the incidents in Fig. 6 by failures, accidents and ground water. •Figure 8: Breaks out incidents by type (overtopping, slope stability, earthquake, foundation, seepage, structural, erosion, mine subsidence and "unknown"). •Figure 9: Separates Fig. 8 data into active and inactive dams. •Figure 10: Separates Fig. 9 data into failures and accidents. •Figure 11: Same as Fig. 8, but broken out by tailings-dam type (Fig. 6). The South-Central area of the Osa Peninsula, Puntarenas Province, on the Pacific coast of southern Costa Rica, may have produced on the order of 30,000 kg (100,000 troy oz) of gold since prehistoric times. The Peninsula lies along an 800- to 900-km-long belt of late Mesozoic eugeosynclinal rock deposition, hydrothermal activity, and deformation (Campanian). The oldest rocks exposed in the area are basalt and tuffaceous mudstone of the Late Jurassic or Cretaceous Nicoya ophiolite complex. The Nicoya Complex is overlain by weakly lithified Pleistocene Older Sediments, predominantly conglomeratic sandstone and derived from erosion of the Nicoya Complex. Erosion reduced the Complex to a surface of high relief, so that the detrital source was in the area originally; the source retreated with subsidence. Stratigraphically, the Older Sediments are followed by surficial deposits of intermediate age, consolidated Younger Sediments reworked from Older Sediments, and unconsolidated Holocene surficial deposits reworked from Younger Sediments. The most prominent structures are a northeast-trending anticline and northeast and northwest fault sets. Some deformation was Cretaceous, but folding and much faulting occurred after deposition of the Older Sediments. Remnants of plainlike features and destructional terraces on the Older Sediments attest to stepwise downcutting of the terrain during successive stages of uplift. Near the end of this process, the present valley floors and coastal headlands developed. During a probable epeirogenic rise in sea level, Younger Sediments filled the valley bottoms and an aggradational coastal plain developed. Sea level dropped by stages and with some reversals to its present position; this caused stepwise incision of the valley fill, stepwise beveling of the coastal plain, and development of the present wave-cut platform. Spilitization around the time of the Campanian orogeny caused some parts of the Nicoya complex to be calcitized and others to be silicified. Gold, pyrite, and probably additional silica were introduced during subsequent hydrothermal activity. Native gold was eroded from Nicoya Complex lodes and reconcentrated through three generations of placer gold deposits. First, the gold was deposited as a detrital.

Asgco’s design of the Arrowhead Ceramic Lagging provides solutions to problems experienced with conveyor belt slippage around the drive pulley and severe wear problems on snub and bend pulleys. Asgco has developed a range of pulley lagging from ceramic, drive rubber and non-drive rubber lagging that is available in abrasion-resistant SBR and MSHA grade rubber for conveyor pulleys from slow belts all the way through to high-speed, high load belts. Why is there such an increased thrust toward positive multiple use land management and where will it lead? History and purpose of the mining law of 1872. John Marshall discovered gold at Sutter?s mill near Coloma, California, on January 19, 1848, and utter chaos resulted. The great migration of people to the undeveloped western lands had begun. Prior to this discovery, copper, lead, and iron had been the minerals for which the laws were made. With this discovery of gold on the public domain, it became apparent that congressional legislation was necessary. This became even more apparent as each of the numerous mining districts which were springing up in California, and elsewhere in the west adopted local miners' customs to regulate their activities. Although these early miners acted under mining district rules and in some cases state regulations, they were, in reality, appropriating minerals without sanction of federal law.

The integrated grouting method, as developed in the USSR, can be applied to multi-purpose operations that in¬clude the construction of shafts, drifts, and tunnels. In the USSR it has been used extensively for primary and final grouting of underground excavations in mining engineering and civil engineering projects. It has been applied in projects where the primary objective was waste contain¬ment. It has also been used to control subsidence beneath buildings located over mined out openings and to eliminate the flow of ground water beneath and around dams. This chapter considers several industrial applications in the form of case histories. The word integrated means that grouting activities were integrated with other activities. 9.1 CASE HISTORIES OF GROUTING FRACTURED ROCK WHEN SINKING VERTICAL SHAFTS The integrated grouting method has been applied most widely in the sinking of vertical shafts in fractured, satu¬rated rock. As explained previously herein, grouting oper¬ations preferably are carried out from the ground surface where they are integrated into the schedule of the setting up of the shaft excavation and construction equipment. Such integration reduces significantly the length of time required for preparation of shaft construction and the time required to sink the shaft. The increased efficiency is achieved by the elimination of cementing operations from the working face upon the penetration of each aquifer. Concomitantly, labor and energy consumption during shaft sinking are minimized because the more complicated and labor-intensive work is carried out at the surface section. Table 9.1 presents the essential parameters for the pri¬mary grouting of saturated fractured rock carried out by the integrated method when sinking vertical shafts. 9.1.1 NAGOL'CHANSK MINE NO. 1-2, VENTILATION SHAFT NO. 1 The integrated method of grouting saturated fractured rock through holes drilled from the surface was employed for the first time during the sinking of vertical shaft No. 1 at the Nagol'chansk mine No. 1-2 in the Don Basin. The shaft had an inside diameter of 6 m. The grouting operations commenced by using cement grout with a density of 1.7 to 1.8 g/cm3. Clay-based grout with cement and other addi¬tives was used only for grouting the aquifers where cement grout proved to be ineffective. By the time of the grouting of ventilation shaft No. 1, hydrodynamic analytical methods were well in hand and a preliminary method for designing isolation curtains had been developed. A method for designing and drilling ori¬ented directional drillholes whose natural curvature re¬flected the characteristics of the fracturing had been devel¬oped. The majority of the necessary equipment had been developed. Clay-based grouts were considered ready for the first industrial application. The hydrogeologic environment at the Nagol'chansk mine No. 1-2 contained many prolific aquifers. According to monitored drillhole data, the total expected inflow into ventilation shaft No. 1 without grouting was 425 m3/hr. This large ground water inflow rate was supported by in¬formation obtained during the sinking of the main shaft and from the auxiliary shaft of the "Nagol'chansk" mine No. 1-2. The construction contractor at the site began sinking ventilation shaft No. 1 to a depth of 217 m by cement grouting from the working face of the shaft. As a result of the cement grouting operations, the inflow of water was reduced from 105.4 to 40 m3/hr over this 217 m interval. However the residual inflow rate caused the shaft to become functional at the depth of 217 m. At this point all grouting operations were transferred to SPETSTAMPONAZHGEOLOGIA (STG) in an effort to improve the operation. In order to carry out preliminary grouting from the sur¬face, seven drillholes were installed and designed for re¬ceiving grout. Drilling was implemented by the ZIF-1200A rig to the design depth of the shaft. The geometry of the principal fracture system that would be encountered by the shaft was estimated while breaking ground using informa¬tion from other shafts. The drillholes were arranged so that they cut through the aquifers uniformly around the shaft. Some preference was given to intercepting the aquifers that were located along the rock dip above the shaft bottom because it was established that the ground water in the aqui¬fers flowed downward along the dip into the cone of de¬pression of the shaft. Investigations in the drillholes using the DAU-3M flowmeter described in Chapter 3 showed that all of the nine aquifers were penetrated by the time a depth of 690 m had been reached. The flowmetric information showed that aquifer numbers [1 and 2], [4, 5, and 6], and [7 and 8] had practically identical hydrogeologic characteristics; so it was decided to connect them into combined stopes and inject the grout using five stopes instead of nine. Table 9.2 shows the results of the grout injection into the aquifers. The volume of grout pumped into the separate intervals through single holes varied from 204 to 15 m3. Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a common problem in different areas with a past history of mining activities, which is characterized by low pH (2-4.5) and significant toxic metals concentration. The main aim of the present work was to perform a process feasibility analysis in order to remove heavy metals (Cd, Zn, Ni, Mn, Cu) from AMD (Acid Mine Drainage) in a relatively cheap and environmentally friendly way, by means of electrowinning and biosorption. A first characterization of an Italian AMD sample was performed evidencing a zinc concentration around 2 g/L, cadmium and nickel content of about 4 mg/L, manganese of 85 mg/L and iron 190 mg/L. Electrowinning tests lead to the following metal removal after three hours treatment: Zn 99%, Ni 99.9%, Cd 99.9%, Cu 99%, Mn 87%, Fe 96%. Moreover, an high grade of purity of the metal deposit has been achieved (Zn>95%), as observed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Considering that metals concentration in the effluent was still above legal limits (in particular for Zn, Mn and Fe), a further biosorption treatment was planned in order to produce an effluent fitting environmental limits. Experimental electrowinning tests and literature multimetal column biosorption data have been used in order to perform a preliminary techno-economic feasibility analysis of the process aimed at metal removal from AMD. A treatment cost of about 6.5 ?/m3 AMD has been estimated, for a plant capacity of 10 m3/h AMD inlet flow rate.

INTRODUCTION Laboratory testing for magnetic concentration circuit design is a requirement, just as it is for most other types of concentration. Natural variations in raw materials allow on1 y the broadest of generalities to be made regarding magnetic separation. Further, magnetic fields are geometry dependent, leaving fundamental models of a separator overly dependent upon the exact conditions for which the models were derived. Despite this, an understanding of the basics of magnetic separation and of the problem to be attacked can result in rapid progress towards the final circuit design with a relatively simple testing program. Magnetic Separation Basic Principles A magnetic field can readily be understood in terms of lines of flux. A familiar demonstration of these lines of flux is the pattern of iron filings on a sheet of paper when a magnet is placed underneath. Lines of flux2 are measured in Gauss (1 line/cm2) or Tesla (10000 gauss). Regions of high field strength have a greater number of lines. Field direction is indicated by a convergence of lines. When a particle is placed in a magnetic field it cuts the lines of flux and alters them in one of three basic patterns. These patterns are referred to as diamagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic. Diamagnetic materials have electronic structures which react to oppose an applied magnetic field. This opposition acts to locally reduce the applied field slightly. The visualization is that lines of flux diverge and go around the particle. Because of this divergence or opposition, a diamagnetic particle will tend to move towards regions of lower flux density. That is to say that the particle will be repelled by a magnetic field. Aluminum oxide and napthalene are examples of diamagnetic materials. Paramagnetic materials have an electronic structure which increases an applied magnetic field. Although these materials also exhibit diamagnetism, they have randomly oriented impaired electrons which align with the magnetic field. As indoor positioning provides particular challenges due to the unavailability of GPS signals, various systems such as ultrawideband (UWB), radio frequency identification (RFID), ultrasound, and wireless local area network (WLAN) have been proposed in recent years. Some of these technologies are currently being marketed and some are still being developed. UWB technology allows for higher precision while also reducing power consumption. Hence, the underground automation and localization systems can use this technology for more accuracy and robustness. This article discusses new robust UWB modules used for underground positioning and collision avoidance with regard to human safety in underground mining operations.

In an effort to promote sustainability in the construction industry, the natural decorative stones that cover large external areas of buildings may be replaced with artificial stones. In this paper the physical and mechanical properties of artificial decorative stones are presented and are critically compared with corresponding natural stones. To test suitability for various applications, artificial stone specimens were subjected to weathering testing (freezing-thaw cycles in a climatic chamber). Mechanical characterization of these specimens was based on uniaxial compressive testing as well as non-destructive ultrasonic testing. Preliminary results show that artificial stones can replace natural stones, thus creating a sustainable development option for the construction industry.

The Riley Pass strip mine is an abandoned uranium-bearing lignite deposit in Harding County, South Dakota, covering about 150 acres of highwalls, pit floor and mine spoils exhibiting elevated levels of radioactivity. Six reclamation design alternatives were developed, ranging from doing nothing to reclaiming to approximate original con-tour. The alternatives were evaluated for expense, site stabilization, and mitigation of public safety hazards. A comparative economic evaluation on three of the alternatives was completed for the Forest Service in selecting an alternative and substantiating federal funding requests. This evaluation included economic impacts associated with physical and radiologic health hazards, affects on recreational users, socioeconomic impacts and environmental improvement.

Northwest Alloys, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alcoa, produces magnesium from dolomite by reduction with ferrosilicon and aluminum. This process produces alkaline by-products in quantities that allow their consideration for use as commercial by-products. Two such products are dicalcium silicate slag, Di-Cal, and magnesium oxide condensate, MgO. The alkaline properties of these materials offer acid neutralizing capability comparable to the traditionally used lime, therefore, warranting a study for their use in applications where the neutralization of acidic waters or process solutions is required, such as treatment of mine waters. In this ongoing study, three mine waters (Bunker HillMine, Berkeley Pit, and Blackbird Mine) were selected for treatment with Di-Cal and MgO. Lime was used as the background control. The solid precipitates were subsequently contacted with pure water at four different pH conditions for stability testing of prepared metal precipitates (expanded TCLP). It was found that neutralization with Di-Cal results in precipitates which are of equivalent to superior stability than those from lime treatment.

Fermilab is constructing a large underground cavern in Limestone to house scientific equipment. The cavern will have a complex L-shaped geometry and about 215-foot depth with relatively shallow rock cover, with service/egress shafts accesses into the cavern. Three-dimensional analytical models were developed to study the ground behavior and support performance. Multiple rock constitutive and failure models were evaluated. The models were significantly impacted by the high lateral in-situ earth pressure at the site. This paper will describe the design approaches that were taken to optimize the cavern arch geometry to allow safe construction in shallow rock, and permanent support requirements.

Mining technology to utilize vital lunar resources will be required for any commitment to permanent lunar basing. Lunar mining must be viewed both as a major supporting element for space resource commercialization and for creation of human settlements on lunar and planetary surfaces to support long-range space exploration. The Apollo missions to the lunar surface and results from fundamental research on analogue lunar rocks by the Bureau of Mines, and others, have provided the initial data for developing lunar mining technology. The multi-disciplinary research projected in this paper outlines the scientific and engineering needs to realize the lunar mining goals.

The East Central Interceptor Sewer, commonly known as the ECIS Project, is the largest public works construction project awarded by the City of Los Angeles. The complexity of this $240 million project, together with the challenge created by the mandated 1,000 calendar days for construction completion, make this project a major interest for the tunneling industry. This paper will describe the ECIS tunnel project, currently under construction by the Joint Venture of Kenny (Sponsor) / Shea / Traylor / Frontier-Kemper. Mining of the18.5 km (about 11 miles) long and 4.7 m (15ft-4in) diameter tunnel is underway with four Tunnel Boring Machines mining at the same time. Details on the mining machines, muck handling systems, innovative construction sequence, together with mining progress will be given.

The Sam Goosly or Equity silver deposit is fundamental- ly a discovery based on the analysis and interpretation of reconnaissance geochemical samples. The discovery was made by Kennco in an area of heavy forestation and wide- spread cover by thin glacial debris. No major mines had been discovered in the vicinity of the discovery prior to the geochemical reconnaissance, and the interpretation of the geochemical results therefore was based on data available through geologic mapping and the sample collection process. In the period 1959-1961, PE. Hirst and his crew, in 1962- 1965 P.T. Blackand his crew, and in 1966-1967 C.S. Ney and P.T. Black and their crew collected geochemical samples from the area of what is now the ore body. Several of these samples were compiled and reanalyzed in the winter of 1966- 1967 for various trace elements, including fluorine. A strong, almost 16-sq-km (10-sq-mile) fluorine anomaly was projected along with a very weak heavy metal anomaly. On the basis of this anomaly, a chalcopyrite-bearing quartz monzonite was discovered in 1967. This was a misleading, noneconomic discovery not associated with the Sam Goosly discovery. The interpretation of the geochemical data by Barakso that summer indicated that another source was responsible for the fluorine anomaly. The conclusion was based on the assemblage of trace elements. Therefore C.S. Ney recommended further regional soil sampling to check the original data. The early results of this follow-up sampling found over 33 ppm silver. First float, then ore outcrop was found in the area of the silver anomaly. The attached reprints complete the development of the property after the discovery of the outcrop of ore.
