Computer-aided control of a mining machine places its operator in a safe, remote location, thus reducing health and safety risks. Sensing systems that provide machine position (xy coordinates) and heading (yaw) are extremely useful in aiding remote positioning of mining machines. The US Bureau of Mines (Bureau) developed two sensing systems for position and heading information: a scanning laser system based on the Lasernet sensor and a mechanical position and heading system based on linear-position transducers. The Bureau is also investigating a system from Honeywell, the modular azimuth and positioning system (MAPS), that employs ring-laser gyroscopes (RLGs). This paper presents a brief background and status of these sensing systems as applied to a continuous mining machine (CM). Included are field test results off each system operating in a room-and-pillar research section at a cooperating West Virginia mine.

The Newell Creek Dam Inlet/Outlet Replacement Project is located approximately 11 miles north of Santa Cruz, California along Highway 9 in the San Lorenzo Valley. This project will replace the existing inlet/outlet works at the Loch Lomond Reservoir by constructing a tunnel using conventional excavation methods while simultaneously drilling three intake shafts to intercept the tunnel from within the city’s water supply. This project will improve the system’s overall operational efficiency and performance, and provide a safe and reliable facility for the City of Santa Cruz’s drinking water supply. This paper discusses the overall project configuration, construction observations, and challenges during construction, including tunnel excavating through the marine sedimentary siltstone of the Monterey Formation, probing and pre-excavation grouting, and the tools utilized to manage the project.

The disposal of the phosphate slimes produced by Florida beneficiation operations is perhaps the biggest single problem of the phosphate mining industry. This is an old problem which has not been solved and which is becoming increasingly severe. In a typical phosphate mining operation, the phosphate rock mined is initmately mixed with sand and clay, constituting what is known as matrix. During the beneficiation, the clay and other fine materials are separated usually at -150 mesh, and washed from the phosphate rock in a form of diluted slurry known as phosphate slimes. The quantity of slimes solids and their composition vary considerably with the location but usually represent from 25 to 35% of the ore mined. Because of the affinity that clays have for water, large volumes of water are required to separate the granular material in the matrix forming a dilute slime suspension (1.5 to 3% solids) of colloidal material, which settles very slowly, and thus requires immense impounding areas, which never becomes totally usable land. The Dolph Mine fire site is located in Lackawanna County, PA, approximately three miles northeast of the city of Scranton. The fire was burning in both coal refuse (culm) and underground anthracite mine workings. It was reportedly begun by rubbish burning on top of a culm bank. A site investigation was completed in 2006 to define the extent of the fire and to recommend fire control measures. A cut off trench was selected as the principal control method. Plans and specifications were prepared in late 2006. The project was bid and a contractor selected in early 2007. The trench construction was completed in 2007. This paper describes the investigation and selection of the fire control method and discusses the trench construction.

Spirals have become one of the most popular methods for treating fine coal. Unfortunately, spirals tend to produce an undesirably high specific gravity cut-point and often misplace significant amounts of coal and/or rock. In the present study, a process-engineering tool known as linear circuit analysis was used to identify problems with traditional spiral circuits and to suggest alternative configurations. These analyses indicate that a modified rougher-cleaner circuit incorporating a middlings recycle stream offers the best option for improving performance while maintaining a reasonable circulating load. In light of this finding, a full-scale test circuit was installed and evaluated at an existing preparation plant. Data obtained from the plant tests indicate that the new spiral circuit can simultaneously reduce cut-point and improve separation efficiency. Preliminary economic analyses show that the new circuit provides an attractive payback on the capital investment.

In late November 2010, a Laotian landmark was achieved for the country?s first tunnel boring machine - (TBM) driven tunnel. Italian contractor CMC di Ravenna celebrated the breakthrough of a 7.6-m- (25.1-ft-) diameter Robbins single shield TBM for a hydroelectric tunnel on the Nam Theun River. The Theun Hinboun expansion project and 5.5 km (3.4 miles) headrace tunnel will bring much needed power in-creases to Laos and Thailand. . ?Since this is the country?s first machine, it has awakened people?s curiosity and interest. We had experienced Italian and Chinese crew members, but we also trained many Lao workers during the course of the project, as this was something they had not seen before,? said Luca Barbàra, Far East Manager for CMC di Ravenna. The machine broke through on Nov. 21 into an exit shaft close to the intake structure on the river. The machine is now being disassembled and removed - CMC hopes to use it on upcoming projects in the region. Due to the current rainy season and relative low level of the tunnel, the last 100 m (330 ft) up to the intake structure will be completed using drill-and-blast after the waters recede below the tunnel invert.

The growing demand for energy combined with the need to protect and preserve the environment have become prime considerations in the design of efficient coal handling ports and their associated stockpiles. The transportation system is analogous to a connected chain which originates at the mines and terminates at steel mills or power plants, in which the port and the stockpile reserves are a vital link. Railroad transportation costs can be minimized by rapid discharge of the cars which, in turn, requires that an adequate stockpile system be available. Ocean transport costs can be minimized by having an efficient high capacity ship loading system and sufficient quantities of coal on hand -all of which also requires an efficient stockpile system to meet shipping demands. The connector between the two modes of transportation, therefore, is the port stockyard. It is here at the interface that optimization of land utilization and materials handling equipment results in a total transportation chain that can operate as a smooth efficient system. Multiple origins of coal require the simultaneous handling of large quantities of coal of many grades. Railroad transportation logistics often limit and define the incoming arrival patterns and limited rolling stock often require priority treatment for railroad operations. The physical limitations of prime ocean frontage require that coal stockpiles be built close to residential or industrial areas which entail strict environmental controls. Large capacity, enclosed coal stockpiles for ocean shipping have not yet been considered feasible but may be forthcoming in the near future. Several have been analyzed.

The organization and operations of the information gathering system, and examples of the products prepared for the commodity phosphate rock by the Division of Nonmetallic Minerals, U.S. Bureau of Mines, are used to describe the Bureau's commodity program. Selected examples from publications about phosphate rock are used to illustrate the program. The Commodity Divisions reporting to the Office of the Assistant Director-¬Metals, Minerals and Materials, have the responsibility in the Bureau of Mines to maintain commodity records, understand the present supply and demand status of the commodity, and forecast future supply, demand, and problems. Within the Divisions, commodity specialists have the broad charter of acquiring as much information about a commodity as is necessary to characterize its history, current status, and future. This information and understanding are the base for the development of mineral policies. To accomplish these objectives, the commodity specialists acquire data and information about each commodity and produce a number of standard publications each year. In addition, as circumstances dictate, each specialist will prepare or participate in the preparation of special documents for specific purposes or problems associated with his commodity. In the preparation of reports and publi¬cations, he may communicate with industrial organizations and other Government agencies.

"The 34th International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) was held July 28–30 at the Lakeview Golf Resort and Spa in Morgantown, WV. Ground control experts have gathered at this location since 1981 to share ideas and successes for improving designs and technologies to enhance the stability of surface and underground mining operations. Ground control is important to all mining operations but is particularly crucial to underground mining to ensure miner safety and operational viability.The year’s event had 240 registered attendees with 20 pecent of that attendance being from the mining industry. A remarkable number of industry representatives attended given the challenges currently faced by the mining industry. Throughout the mining industry, pneumoconiosis is one of the most severe occupational health problems being faced. The goal of completely eliminating pneumoconiosis as an occupational health hazard was underscored by the Federal Government with its enactment of Public Law 91-173 (Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969). Under this law, permissible dust level standards will be placed at 2 mg/m3 in mine atmospheres by December 30, 1972. The mining industry is thus faced with the tremendous technical challenge of achieving this level. Two basic questions can be raised with regard to this legislation. First, does a maximum dust concentration of 2 mg/m3 prevent the occurrence of pneumoconiosis? Secondly, can this dust standard be achieved using presently available methods and equipment? A precise answer to the first question has not yet been developed by the medical profession. Studies are continuing on the origin, prevention, and therapy of pneumoconiosis, and permissible dust levels could become even lower as medical evidence accumulates. Two mineral processing facilities in North America required near terminal density slurries to perform de-bottle necking in their circuits. The installation at Barrick Goldstrike to ensure efficient oxidation conditions and throughputs in the refractory ore treating autoclaves. The Kidd Metallurgical Division unit to provide a steeper tailings slope to extend the life of the existing tailings dam. To achieve these goals, both operations selected a Supaflo "High Compression" Thickener following on site pilot plant evaluation. Commissioning and the first year of operation is reviewed. Operating data is compared with the pilot plant data. In particular, unusual doughnut formation at Goldstrike and the effect of temperature on the terminal density at Kidd Metallurgical Division are discussed.

The behavior of fire and airflows in a confined tunnel differ significantly from more familiar fire situations outside, due to the buoyant effect which tends to create a layer of hot smoke and gases flowing away from the fire near the crown of the tunnel, while air supporting combustion moves toward the fire beneath the smoke layer. A subway emergency ventilation system is designed to force air to flow through the tunnel, shifting the balance of heated air in the direction of the forced flow and avoiding the "back-layering" of hot gases and fumes. This paper presents a computer program, called the "Subway Environment Simulation" (SES), which can be used to predict airflows created by the emergency ventilation system. It utilizes the latest state-of-the-art analytical treatment of fires in enclosed spaces, including observations from mine fires and gas explosions. The program allows designers to reduce construction cost by identifying unnecessary ventilation shafts and by verifying fan capacities. In addition, the program allows the designers and operators to determine safe evacuation routes, in case of a train fire, by predicting the occurrence of back-layering. It can be used to determine when the ventilation system can control the direction of smoke movement to provide a clear and safe path for evacuating people and facilitate fire fighting operations.

San Francisco, CA will host about 1,500 tunneling and underground construction professionals from around the world during the biannual Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC), June 19-22. These professionals are gathering in a city that has seen much under-ground work throughout its history. And, today, the San Francisco region has more than $4.6-billion in tunneling projects under way. The RETC will include three-and-a-half days of technical programming, complete with proceedings, two short courses, two field trips and a host of social activities. In addition, the accompanying exhibit has attracted 127 exhibitors in 152 booths, an RETC record. The following is a brief list of activities that will take place during the conference. This paper presents the results of large-scale fire experiments on evaluating the performances of carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke sensors at low ventilation velocities. Experiments using three different combustibles — conveyor belt, coal and diesel fuel — were conducted in the experimental mine at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Bruceton Research Facility. A total of eight sensor stations were located downstream of the fire with each station containing sensors for CO, smoke, carbon dioxide (CO2 ), oxygen (O2 ), humidity, barometric pressure and temperature, as well as two airflow sensors. The airflow velocity ranged from 0.22 to 0.26 m/s (44 to 51 fpm) in the tests. The response times were recorded for the CO and smoke sensors at each sensor station when smoke and gaseous products of combustion from each burning combustible reached the station. The response times of the CO sensors were used to determine the appropriate sensor spacing in the belt entry with a low air velocity. The performance of the smoke sensor was found to be affected by the high humidity in the experiments. The results on proper selection of sensors and the determination of sensor spacing at a low ventilation velocity can be helpful for ensuring sufficient early fire warning for underground workers, thereby improving the health and safety of miners.

The phosphorus journey begins with the extraction of primary phosphorus in the form of phosphate in apatite through openpit mining and, in some rare cases, underground mining methods. The ores are processed in beneficiation plants to remove impurities before the phosphate rock concentrate is either sold on the open market or converted into phosphoric acid in downstream chemical production facilities by the wet acid process or thermal phosphorus routes. These can in turn be converted into fertilizers, as well as used in the food and electronic industries. The advent of the EV battery has given rise to a new use for purified phosphoric acid in the production of lithium ferro phosphorus (LFP) cathode material for EV battery cathode assemblies. The production of LFP relies on raw materials such as lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxides, iron salts and purified phosphoric acid.

Pumpable J-Crib stopping walls and Jennmar high-strength (HS) stopping panel walls are widely used for resisting high-ventilation air pressures and roof support in underground mines due to their installation efficiency, convergence allowance, and better performance than traditional concrete block stopping walls. Based on the different entry dimensions and required maximum ventilation air pressures of up to 36-in. water gauge, 24-, 27-, 30-, and 36-in.-diameter pumpable J-Crib stopping walls, or 18- to 30-in. thick Jennmar HS stopping panel walls can be designed, and their support capacities and convergence allowances are evaluated for better roof control. Pumpable J-Crib stopping walls consist of 0.187-in.-diameter steel wire reinforced, JCrib material-filled bags, and non-wire-reinforced filler bags in between. Jennmar HS stopping panel walls consist of two, 20-gauge (0.04-in.-thick), galvanized, cold-formed steel panels with J-Seal materials pumped in between. Based on the fundamental structural design principles and specifications of ACI 318-19(22), the compression and flexural strength, and shear resistance of the walls can be checked to be compliant with the codes and specifications following the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) method. Specifically, the 0.187- in.-diameter steel wires in the pumpable J-Crib walls and 20-gauge steel panels in the HS stopping walls are integral parts of the walls and are considered to effectively confine the J-Crib or J-Seal materials. These steel elements play a significant role in reinforcing and improving the strength or support capacity of the stopping walls from a structural design perspective. Because of the high ductility of low-density J-Crib/J-Seal materials and steel elements, these walls are good at accommodating or absorbing the roof convergence (≥5% entry height), which cannot be matched by a traditional concrete block stopping wall (Figure 1). Based on the successful design and application of these stopping walls in different mines for improving roof stability and avoiding the air leakage, the authors have formulated the design methodology and verified independently by the finite element analysis (FEA) simulation technique. This design methodology combines the fundamental structural design principles with specific wall dimensions and material properties, facilitating mine engineers and government agencies to understand the in-depth working mechanism of these stopping walls.

Acceptable working environments in production areas and service openings of Mindola Mine on the Zambian Copperbelt are currently maintained with an air volume of 1000 cu m/s and 5500 kW of installed refrigeration plant. It is planned to open up additional deeper areas of the mine for future production. Temperature problems, due to the increased heat generation from various underground sources are recognized as potential hinderances to efficient production. Findings of research work indicate that the present total heat output of 58,000 kW will inevitably increase by the second five-year period of the deepening program to 52,900 kW and by the fifth five-year period to 63,200 k\V. Estimated WB and DB temperatures, representing the total heat generation in stope faces and development headings during these same periods are predicted to increase to 53.8/40.2 °C and 35.5/42.1 °C respectively. It is assessed that the nominal refrigeration capacity needs to be progressively increased to 9,000 k\V This paper deals with the thermal problems in Mindola Mine, current heat output calculations, future prediction of temperature and heat load in various working areas of the mine with the application of computer programs and interpretation of data in order to find the effective solution for long-term planning of ventilation and air-conditioning.

For the first time in many years, the Liebherr Group chose to host its annual conference for the international construction trade press in the United States. The reason for the move is simple ? mining. Like other large corporations, especially those in the construction fields, Liebherr felt the effects of the global economic crisis that began in 2008. The slowdown in the housing market was especially hard on Liebherr?s mobile crane and earth moving divisions. The mining division, however, while affected by crashing commodity prices that led to cancelled orders and the loss of financing for some customers, was not battered as badly as the other divisions. And now, with the price of commodities once again on the rise, it seems that it will be Liebherr?s largest machines that lead the family-owned company to better days. ?We can report that our generally optimistic view during the crisis has proved adequate,? said Joachim Janka, president of Liebherr mining equipment, at the conference in Williamsburg, VA, just down the road from the company?s mining truck division global headquarters in Newport News, VA. ?Since the third quarter of 2009, our mining equipment activities have been recording once more a strong and steady demand. This has already yielded a substantial increase in market shares for our product lines of large mining shovels as well as for mining trucks.?

Dravo Corporation was founded in 1891 and has long been recognized as a major domestic engineering and construction firm headquartered in Pittsburgh. In 1977, Dravo had revenue of $852.2 million with international business activities contributing $248 million; quite a different picture than envisioned at the turn of the century. Engineering and construction activities still dominate Dravo's most recent history and will do so for the immediate future. However, fluctuations in capital spending by large industrial sectors of our economy during the late sixties were affecting Dravo's planning for continued growth along its traditional lines of business. Diversification was a possible solution to smooth out the upward trend in corporate earnings. One large result of these continuing efforts was the formation of Dravo Lime Company, a vertically integrated, proprietary chemical supplier for the air pollution control market. Briefly retracing the seventies, the passage of the Federal "Clean Air Act" in 1970 supplied the impetus for Dravo Lime Company. This law promulgated limits on the emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) from large stationary sources that would affect local air quality. The major industry that felt the brunt of this regulation was the electric utility industry, especially those generating electricity with coal-fired boilers. The law hastened the development of a new industry, flue gas desulfurization (FGD), and is composed of three major segments: (1) the electric utility, (2) the FGD equipment suppliers (the scrubbing modules), and (3) the scrubbing chemical suppliers. Dravo's experience suggested the equipment end of the business but market analysis indicated that our long range corporate goals could be better attained by investigating the chemical processes involved in the removal of the SO, gas. The result being Dravo Lime Company. This paper will briefly describe the Thiosorbic lime scrubbing process and review our innovative mine and calcining facility.

This report will be given in two sections. The first sec¬tion outlines techniques and equipment to form almond shaped fluorspar briquettes by means of briquet presses, and the second section outlines techniques of the balling disc. PART I - BRIQUET PRESSES Fluorspar has been briquetted for a number of years and the so called "peach pit" briquet is known to many steelmen. Present production is estimated at over 100,000 tons annually. Slide 1 shows an assortment of various sizes and shapes of briquettes. It is possible to form fluorspar into almost any configuration of briquet. For safety on the melting floor, pillow type briquets are preferred. Ease of mechanical handling and durability of the product are facil¬itated by an almond shape. The dimensions of the almond can vary from 1-in. to 1-1/2-in. in length, from 13/16-in. to 1-in. in width and from 1/2-in. to 1-in. in thickness. The type of equipment to pro¬duce almond shaped fluorspar briquettes is shown in Slide 2. Here we have a Komarek-Greaves and Company 300 ton briquettor equipped with almond rolls. This machine is capable of producing fluorspar briquettes at a rats of 30 tons per hour with power consumption of 35 hp per ton par hour.
