The Turquoise Ridge gold deposit is located near the Getchell Mine, 72 km (42 miles)northeast of Winnemucca, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit is owned by Getchell Gold Corp. The host rocks consist of Ordovician and Cambrian age shales and limestones. They have been crosscut by the northeast-trending Turquoise Ridge shear zone and northwest-trending shear zones. Gold mineralization occurs at depths from 427 to 671 m (1,400to 2,200 ft) along the intersection of these structures. Large tonnage, flat-lying deposits occur where folded, favorable beds are intersected by the faults. The carbonate in the beds has been replaced with silica, pyrite and arsenic sulfides.

Mining is likely to be targeted by The United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) as one of its key enforcement targets for fiscal year 2002-2003. Identifying the mining industry as an enforcement target, coupled with an increase in enforcement activity in recent years, places each mining operation at increased risk of receiving enforcement attention. A properly developed and implemented Environmental Management System (“EMS”) tailored for your operation is invaluable in reducing the risk of incurring liability for non-compliance. At the heart of an effective EMS is an audit program that checks the company’s compliance with environmental requirements. In addition, audit privilege (in select states), voluntary self-disclosure, and the attorney-client privilege serve as very effective tools for managing those liabilities that may arise during auditing a well-developed program. Of course, these latter tools are effective only if the auditing program is properly structured and properly managed. EPA and some states also provide varying degrees of immunity for environmental violations that are voluntarily disclosed in writing by the company. However, self-disclosure laws and policies typically prescribe stringent requirements for parties seeking to take advantage of them. For example: U.S. EPA has recently extended the time period in which to provide full written self-disclosure to 21 days. However, U.S. EPA’s revised Self-Disclosure guidance also addresses when a company obtains knowledge of a violation for purposes of triggering the 21-day clock and specifically extends the knowledge requirement to include the company’s agents and consultants. This expansion increases the difficulty companies may have in clearly defining and managing when they obtained knowledge. Ground support requirements for safe and economical design of room and pillar coal mining layouts are reviewed. The design methods for mine roofs and mine pillars are discussed and the role of the geotechnical aspects is considered. It is shown that current support design procedures in the United States do not utilize fully the latest research findings and the need for more effective technology transfer in coal mine ground control is emphasized. Promising new developments in ground support are identified and possible research areas are suggested.

On Feb. 16, 2012, the Polish coal mining company Lubelski Wegiel Bogdanka S.A. set the world record for daily production from a plow-equipped longwall, with an output of 24.4 kt (26,900 st) of coal from a single face. The company commissioned the first Cat longwall system at its Bogdanka Mine, near Lublin in eastern Poland, in March 2010 and within six months had raised the bar to nearly 17 kt/d (18,700 stpd) of cut coal. Since then, Bogdanka has continued to increase its daily output with a plow face that began mining in the new 7/VII/385 panel last October, taking the world record to new levels. In addition to the record output achievement, the plow face advanced more than 27 m (89 ft) at a 1.63-m- (5.3-ft-) cutting height. ?We thought this achievement would be impossible for any shearer in seam heights as low as this,? said Zbigniew Stopa, vice president of Bogdanka.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is the fourth panel cave mine in the East Ertsberg Skarn System, (EESS) which lies 500 m below the producing Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine and up to 1,700 m below the surface. The interaction between the DMLZ and DOZ is occurring as the DMLZ cave grows vertically toward the DOZ footprint. During this process, a rapid change in the global mine system stress is anticipated. This change is forecasted to drive substantial changes in the magnitude and direction of principal stresses in the DMLZ and DOZ mines at PT Freeport Indonesia. These changes will bring the mine system closer to the ultimate capacity of the excavations and can result in significant impacts to mine stability if not managed. Critical to this management, is understanding cave growth and locations, as well as how these changes will impact stress conditions.

Storage and transport systems are essential for mineral processing. Section 10 includes systems for storage and transport of dry bulk materials, slurries, and water necessary for operation of mineral pro¬cessing plants. All aspects of these systems are presented, including material characteristics; dry material placement in and reclamation from storage stockpiles and bins; dry material conveyance; hydraulics (liquid flow and pumping); slurry characteristics; slurry storage and reclaim, slurry flow (distributors, launders, and pipes), and pumping; water (primary and secondary process, reclaimed, fire, cooling, and domestic) supply, transport, and storage; equipment selection and sizing; power transmission; controls; and health and safety. The mate¬rials considered include crude ore; process and other water supplies; initial, intermediate; and final in-plant materials; finished materials; and tailings and other waste products. Section 10 is a compilation of practical operating data for engineers, technicians, and plant opera¬tors. For the design of mineral processing plants, including selection and sizing of equipment, the design engineer should consult with equipment manufacturers, suppliers, engineering firms, and plant op¬erators with specialized experience in particular materials handling methods. When unusual conditions are encountered, actual pilot or full scale testing may be required to insure adequate design. Operation of mineral processing plants is dependent on the proper engineering and construction of storage and transport systems for dry bulk materials, slurries, and water. It is obvious that processing plants cannot produce the required quantities of semifinished and finished products unless these material can be transported adequately to, through, within, and from the plant. Costs of storage and transport systems may exceed 50% of the total capital and/or operating costs. Considerable attention must be given to the design, layout, and engineering of these systems. These systems are interrelated with the mineral processing method and it is necessary to determine the best combination of mineral processing method and storage and transport systems. Storage and transport systems perform a major supportive func¬tion to mineral processing. The final selection of these systems depends on the final selection of the processing method and related systems (environmental control, tailings and waste disposal, etc.). The process¬ing method determines the characteristics of materials to be stored and transported; distances, elevations, flow rates for transport; and storage requirements. Flowsheet After selection of the processing method and related systems, a flowsheet must be developed. This flowsheet should indicate produc¬tion rate, percent solids or moisture, and specific gravity for all initial, intermediate, and final products or product flow streams. It also may be necessary to know the size analysis, chemical analysis, abrasiveness, and other physical characteristics of various product flow streams. The flowsheet provides basic information for plant layout, storage requirements, and selection and sizing of process and transport equip¬ment. Storage and transport systems often function improperly be¬ cause of inadequate flowsheet data or process revisions, resulting in improper equipment selection and sizing. Further details on plant design are presented in Section 33. After selection and sizing of process equipment, it is necessary to select the type of material transport equipment to be used for in¬plant materials handling as well as crude ore, tailings, and final prod¬ucts. The storage and/or surge requirements, including capacity and location, then are determined. Storage and/or surge capacity is neces¬sary for leveling production rate fluctuations due to variations in material characteristics; production scheduling; equipment mismatch¬ing, failure, or breakdown; and scheduled maintenance downtime. Variations in ore grindability will cause fluctuations in throughput or production rate for grinding mills and variations in ore grade will cause fluctuations in production rate for concentrating equipment. Variations in material moisture content and percent solids can have serious effects on the capacity of material transport equipment. In some cases, a blending system may be desirable or necessary to reduce variations and to obtain uniform production and/or metallurgy. Storage capacity often is needed because of different production schedules for various phases of the mining and mineral processing complex. As an example, the mine and coarse crushing plant may operate on a one- or two-shift-per-day schedule while the fine crushing plant and concentrator on a three-shift-per-day schedule. This would require storage between the coarse and fine crushing plants. Another example would be load-out storage where unit trains are used to haul concentrate or final products. The concentrator could be operated on a three-shift-per-day schedule while only I to 2 hr may be scheduled for unit train loading. This would require adequate load-out storage so that the concentrator can be operated continuously. Process equipment with mismatched capacities requires storage or surge capacity between the mismatched equipment to achieve oper¬ating efficiency. As an example, the fine crushers may have greater capacity than the rod mills. Storage between the fine crushers and the rod mills permits both the crushers and rod mills to be operated at optimum capacity with the crushers actually operating or running a lesser number of hours per day. Mismatched capacities for process and transport equipment also may require storage or surge capacity. Mismatching of equipment capacities most often occurs because of the difficulty in equipment sizing. Thus, the design engineer must anticipate where in the flowsheet these mismatching capacities are likely to occur while making every effort to assure that equipment is selected and sized properly. Equipment breakdown can cause major operating difficulties and lost production. These breakdowns can be reduced with adequate scheduled maintenance. Lost production due to nonscheduled down¬time caused by equipment breakdown can be reduced further by standby equipment and storage and/or surge capacity ahead of essen¬tial mechanical and electrical equipment. As an example, standby pumps and conveyors often are available as part of the in-plant trans¬port system. Storage and/or surge bins and tanks often serve dual functions, such as dewatering, mixing, and smoothing production rate fluctuations.

In 1974, Allis-Chalmers, in corporation with several iron ore operating companies, began to evaluate direct firing of coal in the GRATE-KILN System. Several coals were ground at the Allis-Chalmers Process Research and Test Center and shipped to Cleveland Cliff's pilot plant near Negaunee, Michigan, where they were used as fuel to pelletize Empire magnetite concentrates in the CCI pilot-scale grate kiln. Pilot plant tests were sufficiently favorable to warrant testing in a commercial-scale pelletizing plant. These tests were conducted at the Empire Mine in the late summer and fall of 1974 and again in the summer and early fall of 1975. In the fall of 1975, Allis-Chalmers Mining Systems Division started a program, in the Advanced Technology Center, designed to develop a laboratory test procedure for the evaluation and study of various parameters associated with the direct firing of coals in a GRATE-KILN System. The initial results of this program were presented at the 50th Annual Meeting Minnesota Section, AIME, January, 1977. This paper will briefly review the initial laboratory work and discuss the latest results obtained.

Introduction The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act was passed in 1977 to put an end to the uneven environmental standards and enforcement established by various coal mining states in the US. One year after passage, the Secretary of Interior was directed to promulgate permanent program regulations implementing Title V provisions of the Act. These regulations were to form the basis for state regulatory programs under the Act and to allow states to assume primary regulatory responsibility. To implement the underground mining provision of the Act, the Secretary is directed in section 516(a) of the Act to promulgate rules. But they must take into consideration the differences between surface and underground coal mining. The regulations developed by the Secretary in 1979, with respect to subsidence control, included: • a subsidence control plan as part of the permitting process; • substantive provisions establishing performance standards for subsidence control; and • provisions providing for the prohibition of mining under perennial streams, impoundments larger than 24.6 dam3 (20 acre ft), and certain public facilities and urban areas. Industry challenged the Secretary's regulations implementing the subsidence control provisions. The litigation was consolidated with all other challenges to the permanent program regulations. (Permanent Surface Mining Regulation Litigation, Civil Action No. 79-1144; D. D.C., May 16, 1980.) In two opinions dealing with the multitude of issues raised by both industry and environmental groups, the US District Court of the District of Columbia ruled against industry. It upheld the promulgated subsidence control provisions. The US Court of Appeals stayed the appeals pending the agency's review and revision of its regulations. The regulatory reform was conducted in accordance with the order from the Secretary of Interior and the President in 1981. As a result, the subsidence control regulation was revised, reproposed, and finalized in June 1983 (Federal Register). This regulation, along with others, was again challenged by environmental groups and industry. On Oct. 1, 1984, the court, after finding the Secretary's reading of the Act reasonable, upheld the 1983 subsidence regulation except for one section. On Feb. 21, 1985, in accordance with the court's ruling, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) suspended a portion of 30 CFR 817.121 (c)(2) concerning the damage correction requirement for structures or facilities and reproposed it on July 8, 1985 (Federal Register). In conjunction with a request for public comments, OSM now also seeks comments on the omission from the 1983 rule of the requirement in the 1979 rule regarding a presubsidence survey and monitoring of damage to structures. Technical issues related to subsidence regulations The subsidence regulations of June 1, 1983, consist mainly of two parts: a subsidence control plan as part of the permitting process; and substantive provisions establishing performance standards. Many of the economic resources of Egypt have been recognized and exploited for thousands of years (e.g. gold and copper). Most of these minerals, particularly those from hard-rock sited deposits, are found in complex form along with other components while those present in sedimentary sequences are largely in simple compounds or as native elements. Recognition of their characteristic settings (structure, basin development, environment of formation etc.) is the main clue in predicting and locating their presence. The main economic minerals exploited in Egypt today come from sedimentary sequences and include sodium and potassium chlorides, gypsum, sulfur, and sedimentary iron ores. Large amounts of low grade sedimentary phosphates are known but are not of economic value at today's prices. Recent intensive investigation in the north-eastern Sinai (EI Arish) and along the southern coasts of the Gulf of Suez has revealed new and extensive sulfur and chloride deposits, and considerable oil and gas are now being exploited from closely related sediments. Tin is the only mineral that is produced from hard-rock sources, and gold and copper deposits are present but not of high enough grade to be economically viable. However, a significant part of Egypt has not yet been studied in enough detail to close the door on future discoveries. Another point of considerable geological interest is the presence of diverse, modern evaporitic settings, from which we may draw the analogs for many of the older gypsum, anhydrite, chloride and sulfur de-posits. In fact these analogs are so well displayed that both the Sinai and Gulf of Suez-Red Sea evaporites (Middle and Upper Miocene) can be readily compared with these modern deposits.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) conducted underground evaluations in an attempt to quantify respirable rock dust generation when using an untreated rock dust and a rock dust treated with an anti-caking additive. Using PDM 3600s and 3700s, these evaluations measured respirable rock dust levels arising from a flinger-type application of rock dust on rib and roof surfaces. Rock dust with a majority of the respirable component removed was also applied in NIOSH’s Bruceton Experimental Mine (BEM) using a bantam duster. The respirable dust measurements obtained downwind from both of these tests are presented and discussed. This testing did not measure miners’ exposure to respirable coal mine dust under acceptable mining practices, but indicates the need for effective continuous administrative controls to be exercised when rock dusting to minimize the measured amount of rock dust in the sampling device. INTRODUCTION Two factors have combined to renew concern regarding respirable dust measurements and compliance. This renewed recognition is due to two regulations that have modified operators’ rock dust schedules. First, the 80% incombustible requirement in intake entries has increased both on-section and outby-the-section rock dusting. Secondly, the recent respirable dust regulation change that has increased the number of respirable dust samples taken per sampling cycle. Previously, when only 5 samples were needed bi-monthly, rock dusting could be scheduled to not interfere with the respirable dust sampling schedule. The significant number of samples now required under new regulations combined with the need to maintain 80% total incombustible content in active mining areas require the schedules for respirable dust sampling and rock dusting to intermix. This raises concerns about the amount of rock dust that potentially is included in the sampler weight gain. Additionally, the respirable dust maximum was lowered from 2.0 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 (effective August 1, 2016) increasing concern that rock dust contamination may be an issue. Currently, the acceptable practice is to apply administrative controls such as keeping the miners upwind during rock dust application or to schedule rock dusting during a maintenance shift when the number of miners present is lower. NIOSH’s research examining the quality of rock dust has led to the development of hydrophobic rock dusts."

Although I will briefly review the current status of coal slurry pipeline technology, I wish to make it clear that this is not a technical paper. It is intended instead to review the current situation on energy resources and requirements, and the environmental, political and economic considerations that mandate a serious consideration of Slurry pipelines as a viable mode of coal transportation into the Georgia and Florida markets. In order to more fully appreciate our current energy situation, it will be helpful to go back a few years and review the evolution of our so-called energy "problem." It was about two decades ago that the first and only major natural gas transmission pipeline was built into the State of Florida by Florida Gas Company. This line was conceived and implemented during a time when gas was plentiful and cheap, and it appeared at that time that unlimited gas reserves were continually being discovered, thus assuring the availability of a clean, cheap fuel and the ,viability of the pipeline system. One of the major factors justifying the original pipeline construction as well as subsequent expansions was a series of long-term commitments under which Florida Gas transported natural gas owned by electric utilities for use as boiler fuel. Thus for the past 20 years Florida industry, commerce, and domestic fuel requirements have been met either directly or indirectly through clean, cheap natural gas which would not have been otherwise available without the pipeline system.

This paper presents the results of a study of case histories of projects on which sinking caissons were used to construct shafts for tunnel construction and other underground works. Design methodologies are reviewed with respect to the impact of soil and groundwater conditions on the performance and constructability of sinking caissons. Factors which have led to success or failure are reviewed and evaluated, and recommendations for future investigation, design and construction activities are presented. Cost data for five recent projects are reviewed and compared to the cost of shaft installation by other means.

"INTRODUCTION Urban tunneling is often related with special geotechnical risks. Typical causes are difficult (hydro)geological conditions, a very low overburden and the presence of critical and vulnerable (infra)structures in the influence zone of the construction (e.g. existing tunnels, roads and pavements, sewer pipes, gas and power lines, landmarked buildings, historic monuments). To manage these risks appropriately, an early detection and warning of unexpected behavior of the affected geotechnical objects ground and tunnel, as well as existing structures are mandatory. To accomplish this, the design and execution of a dense geotechnical monitoring program is of high importance. In more detail, this means specifying and performing a systematic and continuous acquisition, processing and analysis of monitoring data to support decision making. In recent years the development of new automatic sensors and (wireless) data transfer techniques and the general trend towards an automatic acquisition of monitoring data has led to an enormous increase of data production frequencies and volumes. In order to handle this data explosion efficiently, information systems and geo-databases have been developed and used successfully in many projects. They represent IT tools that support the different tasks of a given geotechnical monitoring program including data acquisition, transfer, check, processing, backup, analysis, distribution, reporting and, last but not least, alarming. Meanwhile, some tools already have developed the capability to connect to other theme-specific databases used in the project and, thus, serve as a central data management system for all kind of digital data produced. This makes possible the implementation of further useful functions and services supporting tunneling tasks such as machine control, tunnel simulation, geological prediction, process optimization, etc. where data from different engineering disciplines must be combined and processed in an integrated way. In the following chapters our aim is to describe how monitoring data management, geotechnical monitoring, alarming and reporting are organized and technically implemented at the metro project Cityringen in Copenhagen (Denmark). We want to highlight the specific role and tasks of the used tunnel information system in the project, and particularly inform on the most relevant challenges."

Consider a deep gold orebody with grade of 4 g/t (0.11 oz/st). At the time of this writing, with gold prices at historic highs, it could be a good, but not great, prospect. But if it is a vein deposit, and those veins are 200 g/t (5.8 oz/st), it would be significantly more attractive if there was a way to produce directly from those veins, leaving the rest of the rock in place. It has been a viable commercial technology for more than five decades.

An 8.5-km (5-mile) conveyor has gone into operation in western Turkey to eco¬nomically transport crushed lignite from the mine area to a power plant. This conveyor has replaced trucks as the principal mode of transporting the lignite. One principal element of Turkish govern¬ment policy is the country's commitment to increase electricity supplies for mining and other industries. Lignite is an important source of electric power supply in Turkey. Production was about 48 Mt (53 million st) in 1987, amounting to more than 20% of the total power supply in Turkey. In the western Anatolia supply network, it plays a major role for power generation. Deposits are located in the Soma region of western Turkey. The lignite is of low quality, deposits are scattered, and the terrain is dif¬ficult and hilly. These conditions demand an economical and technically feasible method of transporting the raw material from mining areas to the central thermal power plant. The Soma power plant is located about 120 km (75 miles) northeast of Izmir, near the coast of Aegean Sea. An overland conveyor of a unique design has gone into commercial operation at the Soma power plant facilities of the Turkish state electricity organization, Türkiye El¬ektrik Kurumu (TEK). The conveyor re¬places truck transport to ensure economical use of the lignite deposits. Computer-aided design (CAD) added more precision, qual¬ity, and flexibility of engineering in design activities. It also helped quick realization of the project that was executed in cooperation with the German company Krupp Industri¬etechnik and the Turkish firm Gama Endüstri AS. Unique features The conveyor includes several major features rarely combined in a single flight: Overland long distance conveyor. • Horizontal curves. -Steep vertical concave and convex curves to match the difficult terrain. Down-hill conveying. Frequency converter drives with vari¬ able belt speed. Generating operation mode to backfeed the energy to the network. Layout The 8.5 km (5 mile) long conveyor takes the -200 mm (-8 in.) lignite from the primary crushing plant located near the mine to the central, final crushing plant located in the stockyard area near the power station. The drive and belt tensioning assemblies are situated near the tail end of the flight. The high voltage switchgear is housed in a room in the primary crushing plant build¬ing upstream from the conveyor flight. The frequency converters are installed in the low voltage switchgear room located below the control room within the primary crushing plant building. The geostatistical technique of conditional simulation is applied to measure the uncertainty in factor of safety predictions for soil slopes where there is incomplete knowledge of the spatial distribution of soil properties. A case study considers a natural clay slope in Canada. The sequential indicator simulation technique is used as a means for generating a series of spatial maps of soil properties for this site. These maps approximate random draws from the conditional probability density function that characterizes existing uncertainty in the spatial distribution. Factor of safety determinations are then made for each simulated map using the simplified-Janbu approach, where the computations are performed with a new computer program that can operate on irregular spatial profiles of soil properties specified on a discrete grid. A unique capability of this approach is the ability to generate the distribution of factor of safety conditional to the type, position, and value of existing site characterization measurements. This capability should reduce uncertainty in FS predictions.

This paper describes conditions which have caused specific bursts, present capabilities of detecting stress buildup and bursts, control methods, and a suggested approach to analyzing any individual mine-burst problem.

"When MacLean Engineering chairman and founder Don MacLean got the first question from a minesite about the possibility of addressing ventilation limits through incremental fleet electrification, he was intrigued. It was back in 2015, and the MacLean scissor bolter was already diesel-electric (jumbo trailing cable), so it made sense to him that if they could engineer a battery drive system for the unit’s tramming cycle, they would have the inaugural electric vehicle (EV) MacLean unit.At that time, there were not any entirely diesel-free hard rock mines in existence on the planet, and that remains the case to this day — although the Borden project in northern Ontario is progressing toward that goal (see page 33). This meant there was essentially zero market demand for battery electric vehicles as well as a complete lack of battery technology to address the battery electrification of heavy haulage. Heavy haulage is the part of a typical mine’s mobile fleet with the largest footprint when it comes to diesel particulate emissions, greenhouse gases and wasted energy in the form of heat.Three years later — the wave of battery electrification that is currently picking up speed across the mining industry promises to hit full swing by the early 2020s when a slew of new build, diesel-free mines will start construction. But this movement toward emissions-free mobile fleets is not a completely new phenomenon. Instead, it is an updating of mining technology from a previous generation. What is going on now is the re-electrification of mining. Up until the 1960s, early generations of battery technology (lead acid) and electric locomotive systems were the norm for material and ore haulage in Canada and elsewhere.The thought of a coming paradigm change in mining was particularly pertinent to Don MacLean back in 2015, as he had been part of the era that ushered in the first generation of rubber-tire diesel equipment, when he was a divisional foreman with Inco in Sudbury in the 1970s. He was part of the operating team that was tasked to build a rail loop on one extraction level of the mine. At that time, events on the ground overtook the project, as diesel-powered mobile equipment became a viable option. Once the first diesel scoop was introduced at Creighton #3 shaft, it was clear what the power, haulage capacity and mobility could do for operations and that era of electric rail haulage underground was effectively over."

This study compares the cementation performance of metallic iron, metallic aluminum, and metallic tin in terms of the reaction conditions and parameters in synthetic antimony chloride solutions. The effects on the antimony recovery (%) caused by the cementators’ types, stirring speed, reaction time, and temperatures were explored thoroughly. The cementation kinetics of antimony were also explored for each cementator. The activation energies were determined to be 10.99, 9.09, and 13.58 kJ mol– 1 for Al, Fe, and Sn, respectively. The results reveal that the reaction is diffusion controlled, and comparable results were obtained for each cementator. At 25 °C, 40 mg of iron powder was found to reduce all antimony ions (i.e., approx. 99% recovery), but even when 100 mg of Al and Sn cementators were used, the antimony recovery did not reach 100%. This result shows that iron is the best candidate to cement antimony out of the solution.
