This paper describes the implementation aspect of a blast hole kriging system which has been developed for the purpose of daily ore-waste control in an open pit mine. The primary goal of blast hole kriging is to improve the ore-waste delineation procedure. A complete computer program package called Blast Hole Kriging (BHK) System was developed for IBM/PC AT or XT computer, using Fortran language and supplemented by a few Assembly language routines for bit-map manipulation. The emphasis of this paper is on the implementation aspect of the developed system. For this reason, the requirements for practical implementation and the system design considerations are discussed in the paper, as well as the main features of the University of Arizona's BHK System.

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is designing the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in San Jose, California. The project includes 6.9 km (4.3 miles) of twin-bored tunnels to be constructed through downtown San Jose using two earth pressure balance machines (EPBMs). This paper begins with a project description and update of the project status followed by a description of the relationship between anticipated ground conditions and EPBM requirements. Topics addressed include soil conditioning, abrasion resistance, annulus grouting, face pressure estimation, additional pressure control devices and control measures to limit over-excavation and settlement.

INTRODUCTION The Metropolitan Boston Transit Authority (MIA) Red Line has served greater Boston commuter needs from its Harvard Square terminus since its opening in 1912. Since then, the population of Boston's northwest area has increased substantially, and with this growth have come dramatic changes in the type and distribution of urban land uses, including the number of households, jobs, shopping and recreational opportunities; these changes have created a need for improved transportation. Extension of the Red Line to better serve these communities has been a topic of discussion for nearly 40 years. In November of 1977, the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) granted the MBTA approval and funding for the Red Line Extension Project. With funding in place, the MBTA proceeded with final engineering and construction of the section from Harvard Square to Alewife. When completed, the Red Line Extension will add 3.2 miles of new track to the MBTA system. Estimated final cost is about $400 million. On October 3, 1978, the MBTA received bids for the construction of Project 091-105, Harvard Square to Porter Square Tunnels and Shafts, which is part of the overall Red Line Extension. The Joint Venture of Morrison-Knudsen, White, Mergentime was the low bidder at $47,478,600. Official award of the contract came on October 25, 1978, with Notice to Proceed given October 31, 1978. Membrane technology has been available for over 36 years, but has been used sparingly in the general mining industry. However, recent developments in polymer chemistry, spiral wound element construction, pretreatment equipment and techniques and an expanded understanding of membrane fouling and cleaning techniques have dramatically improved the reliability and robustness of membrane based systems in the mining industry. Harrison Western has expanded the use of this “new” technology to enhance the use of membrane technologies to separate metals from large volume heap leach mining solutions containing copper, zinc, and iron, gold or silver. Moreover, membrane technologies are ideally suited to fractionations that add value to processing fluids from refineries like separating metals from acids or concentrating acids and producing high quality process fluids. Finally, wastewater from Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) or, as in the case of the Newmont Yanacocha Mine in Peru, the treatment of excess barren leach solution created during the rainy season, can be cost effectively processed to meet World Bank Standards for surface discharge. Polymeric membranes, specifically thin-film composites, have been developed that will purify, fractionate or concentrate gold, silver, copper, zinc or nickel. Recent applications have been developed for spiral wound modules that operate across the pH spectrum from 0 to 14. Systems using membranes have been constructed that operate on feed streams from 140° C to 300 centipoise. Opportunities exist to apply membrane technology to concentrate gold, silver, copper, zinc or nickel using thin film composite membranes. Engineered membrane types can operate across the spectrum from low pH (<2) acid applications to high pH > 10 cyanide applications. Incorporating HW EMS™ membrane technologies into current mining operations could allow one to increase production because the membrane technology would be used to pre-concentrate heap leach solutions, and therefore, increase utilization of existing extraction and refinery capabilities.

Optimization and sensitivity analysis of mineable economic volumes have been standard practise for open pits for many years now, and more recently software has become available to apply techniques for delineating mineable reserves for underground mines. In general these techniques have been applied to a single resource model to quantify mineable tonnes and grade for underground mining. However by using multiple conditionally simulated models both the risk associated with the mining parameters and the risk associated with variations in grade, tonnes and profit can be quantified. Using suitable software the mine planner can then easily and quickly define and compare alternative designs to assess and improve the robustness of and the confidence in the final design.

The effectiveness of anaerobic in-situ biological treatment for the immobilization of selenium, molybdenum, and uranium in an alluvial aquifer was examined using long-term column tests. A series of organic substrate and nutrient combinations were tested to determine removal effectiveness, optimum supplement concentrations and ratios. Final column testing was conducted to determine the chemical stability of the treatment by-products/treatment compounds by dosing the columns continuously with elevated redox untreated alluvial groundwater.

There are many opportunities for computers to assist in dragline mine planning. Three important areas particularly lend themselves to computer assisted study. These are overall mine design and planning, the computation and display of range diagrams and the calculation of production and production variability. The computation of range diagrams is of particular interest because of the importance of matching the dragline and site geometries. This paper examines the uses of range diagrams in dragline mining and illustrates the application of computer techniques to the computation using one such program as an example. The use of computer generated range diagrams for machine selection, pit design and in parameter analysis is discussed. Directions for further development are also provided. There is a great deal that can be done to additionally enhance the ability to provide accurate designs for the dragline operation. One area that needs special attention is the dumping of overburden around access ramps into the pit. This situation is one of the most difficult dumping sequences and affects machine selection and pit operation. It is also suggested that programs that simulate the production schedule of the drag-line would be useful. It is concluded that large overall mine planning programs are very important in dragline mining. However, smaller programs designed for a specific, task are also important tools in many cases. These are easy to learn and use, well adapted to the PC environment and provide useful information, both for design and for daily planning.

Big Creek Tunnel 2, constructed in 1912, is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, east of Fresno. It is horseshoe and circular shaped with a 3.6m (12ft) diameter and extends 6.6km (4.1mi). Historically, tunnel performance suffers from highly jointed rock and low cover. In 2003, leaks were observed surfacing through outcrops of highly jointed graniodiorite, and subsequently investigated by visual inspection, joint mapping, ground penetrating radar, and a water-tracing survey. Several grouting targets were identified as a result of these investigations. Cement grouting was used to fill void spaces, broken rock and open joints expected to exist behind the concrete and steel liners. Project work consisted of grout hole drilling through the existing concrete liners, and grout placement through squeeze packers supplied by standard grout hose and portable grout plants. Grout pressures were typically 20?30 psi. Grouting was completed in 16 days with a total of 1,550 sacks of Type II/III grout placed at the three likely leak source areas. No grout was observed exiting the tunnel and the leak was stopped.

In a mine operation, the proper strategy to handle residues is one of the main concerns, in particular when dealing with mine/plant liquid effluents. Most active water treatment systems at metal mines rely on standard alkali-addition procedures. However, the increase of mineral prices, stricter environmental standards and high metal content in some effluents, has led to the development of alternative treatment techniques for their removal and/or recovery. This article presents a roadmap to face mine wastewater treatment requirement, with focus on two active treatment strategies: 1) conventional lime-based technology and 2) the use of NaSH or Fe(OH)3 for metal precipitation and separation, including possible valuable elements recovery. The Roadmap consists of 1) Approach to effluent treatment 2) Characterization 3) Precipitation tests 4) Solid/liquid separation tests and 5) Economic analysis.

The earthmover tire shortage has been a case of bust and boom for the tire industry. Tire producers were unwilling to invest ahead of the mining boom. In their defense, though, the metals sector of the mining industry tends to be cyclic, tire manufacturers are not prescient. Until two years ago, low tire demand depressed prices. The incentive to invest in new, big-tire capacity was almost nonexistent, according to Prashant Prabhu, president of Michelin Earthmover Tire worldwide. “There has been very poor anticipation or a miscaluation of the amplitude of the (tire) demand on the part of just about everybody,” said Prabhu. What a turnaround. The earthmover tire market has grown by 30 percent over the past two years. Now there are not enough earth-mover tires and likely won’t be for the next two years. Goodyear said it was offering customers bias-ply tires when it could not supply enough radial-ply tires. Komatsu said it lost equipment sales because it could not provide the tires that customers requested. Volvo and Caterpillar said they are delivering some vehicles without tires, either promising tires later or leaving the customers – mine operators – to find their own rubber.

The Expert System implemented at the East-Malartic mill controls a copper flotation circuit while taking into account the profitability of the operation. Treating a copper gold ore, the flow sheet integrates a flotation step followed by cyanide leach circuit. The Expert System calculates the actual net smelter revenue of the flotation circuit, accounts for the operating cost of the cyanidation circuit and defines optimal metallurgical operating targets to optimize the overall economics. To be realistic, probability factors and circuit diagnostic analysis are integrated in the operating target selection. The Expert System has proved to be successful, robust and flexible. It resulted in a copper concentrate grade increase of 1% while maintaining recovery. The use of the expert system also gives plant personnel good training procedures and promotes interaction with mill operator.

The Grasberg porphyry copper-gold deposit of Freeport Indonesia Inc., an 81% owned subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan Inc., lies within the Ertsberg Mineral District in central Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Grasberg deposit was discovered during a drilling campaign initiated in early 1988. Production at the open pit Grasberg deposit commenced in December 1989. The Grasberg copper-gold orebody is contained with a young igneous complex of dioritic composition which intrudes limestones of the Tertiary New Guinea Group. Alteration is typical of porphyry copper deposits worldwide except that higher grade primary chalcopyrite with significant gold values is associated with a centrally located zone of strong quartz stockwork.

German manufacturer DBT signed a contract to supply a sixth automated-plow long-wall system to Shenyang Coal in Liaoning province in northeastern China. This most recent order occurred just weeks after DBT signed a contract to deliver a fifth automated-plow longwall system to Datong Coal in Shanxi province. The plow will go into service at Shenyang Coal’s Hongyang Mine. Mining conditions at the mine, coupled with DBT’s advanced automated-plow technology, means that the system has the potential to become one of the world’s most productive thin-seam longwalls.

Environmental regulation is an ever growing cost to the mining industry. Requirements for such items as air quality modeling, hazardous waste disposal, selenium concentration in water and sagebrush planting consume more of the mining industry’s resources each year. The mining industry is willing to make the necessary financial commitments to assure that the air, land and water resources are adequately protected and restored. However, it is sometimes difficult to explain to management and stockholders why money should be spent on a specific issue when science and common sense indicate it is being wasted. Common sense and sound science should dictate how mining is regulated.

The U.S. coal mining industry consumes a significant amount of energy, primarily diesel fuel and electricity. The continuous global increase in energy demand, high energy prices, and environmental issues related to carbon dioxide emission represent a substantial challenge for the mining industry. This paper presents a result of research work on development of an integrated data environment system for analysis and control of energy consumption in a surface coal mine. A case study on an operating surface coal mine is carried out to demonstrate the practical application of the developed system. The research work presented here may be used by mining professionals to help provide the answers to the crucial questions of when, where, and how much energy is being used. This National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study was conducted to focus future research on the most significant electrical problems in the mining industry. Data from 1,926 mine electrical accidents (including 75 fatalities) that occurred between 1990 and 1999 were studied. Coal and metal-nonmetal operator- and contractor-reported data are presented. All data used in this analysis were MSHA closeout data, except 1999, which were preliminary data. Electricity was the 4th leading cause of death reported in mining despite being the 14th leading cause of injuries. Electrical shock, not electrical burns, caused 70 of the 75 electrical fatalities reported. About one-half of mine electrical accidents and fatalities occurred during electrical maintenance. Suggestions for mitigating electrical hazards are proposed.

Improvements in miners? safety and health, as reflected by injury and illness statistics, have reached a plateau and even been reversed. Research into miners&apos; OSH is a necessary adjunct to regulatory enforcement. Under the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) mining experts have come together to draft a national agenda for this research. The Mining Sector Council, one of ten NORA Sector Councils, has produced a draft national research agenda to guide all mining research entities: academia, government, and industry. The agenda has seven major objectives, each of which has a sequence of sub-objectives: Reduce the likelihood of disasters in mines; Improve mine disaster response; Improve the health of miners; Improve atmospheric control (ventilation) in mines; Improve health and safety through behavioral research; Improve mine design, systems operations, and management performance to enhance mine health and safety; Apply ergonomics, human factor engineering, to increase health and safety. Long-term maintenance of the Mining Research Agenda requires input from the public, both here and abroad, monitoring of the impact of research results using OSH data, and partners who will translate the research to practice.

Treated effluent from the Clean Water Coalition (CWC) member agencies is currently discharged at an annual average rate of 6,570 l/s into the Las Vegas Wash, and is increasing annually. As the effluent flow increases, the nutrient loading of the treated effluent will approach the maximum limits allowed under the current regulations. To manage this flow while maintaining water quality in Lake Mead, the CWC is implementing a 44-km-long conveyance system. This paper discusses the geological and geotechnical aspects of the 13.4-km-long tunneled section through the River Mountains and their effect on design. The tunnel alignment traverses a heterogeneous package of volcanic and sedimentary rocks exhibiting widely variable rock conditions.

A site characterization strategy formulated for the probabilistic design of underground structures is presented, which takes into account the variability of rock properties and the stochastic nature of the rock failure process. It entails determining probability distributions of rock properties by utilizing the theory of extremes and Monte Carlo simulation. Laboratory and field test data are analyzed and presented to illustrate the methodology. The results indicate that the distributive characteristics of rock mass properties can be estimated using empirical relationships currently available. This results of analyses can be incorporated into the design of underground structures, and then, the relative uncertainties of the failure probability of the structures can be assessed.

The National Mining Hall of Fame will hold its 13thAnnual Induction Banquet during MINExpo International 2000 in Las Vegas, NV. The gala black-tie (optional) event will honor eight legendary leaders of the mining industry. The event will take place at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel on Sunday, Oct. 8. The induction ceremonies will salute mining greats elected by the board of governors from a list of nominees submitted by mining industry partners and the public. The members of the Class of 2000 will join 151 other inductees enshrined in the Mining Hall of Fame in Leadville, CO. The evening will begin at 6 pm with a cash bar reception followed by the banquet and program at 7 pm. Keynoting the banquet program will be Harrison (Jack) Schmitt. He was the geologist/astronaut of the Apollo 17 mission to the moon in 1972 (see related story on page 26). And he is the only scientist to “kick rocks on the moon.” Schmitt is also a member of the Mining Hall’s board of governors. Schmitt was also the keynote speaker at the First Annual Induction Banquet in Denver, CO in 1988.
