It is often stated that innovation is central to the economic survival of mining and mineral processing in the face of global competition, and yet technology is often far from a core strategy in our industry - hence the concerns that are often voiced about the apparent slow rate at which new technology is applied. Much of the discussion stems from a lack of understanding of the role of technology in innovation, and of the role of R&D within the innovation process. To a large extent this has all been said, however, the messages are clear and deserve repetition. This paper expresses the personal views of the authors, based on experience in government-funded (CSIRO and universities) research, and in CRA Ltd, a large mining and mineral processing company. Further than this, it explains how our own development unit within the CRA Group has come to see its key roles as including the transfer of technology, and the training of technologists to move into the operating business units. We conclude that these critical tasks are the keys to creating the environment that will allow us to maximise the contribution of technology.

The purpose of this paper is to make a comparative cost analysis of domestic and foreign exploration projects which developed into mines during the 1960-1974 time period. A total of 18 mining companies, American and Canadian, were approached to solicit cost data on domestic and foreign exploration projects which developed into mines. Only 20 percent of the companies to which questionnaires were sent made data available. Several companies answered negatively, informing us that they would have difficulty in attempting to sort our costs. Some companies were usable to release cost details. It is comforting, however, to realize that some of the non-contributing companies expressed eagerness to hear the findings of this paper. Inasmuch as the data available on exploration expenditures is, in some cases, somewhat uncertain and that no two mining companies follow the same system of cost allocations, the results obtained in this analysis should he interpreted as trends of a general character.

Extraction of manganese, gold, and silver from a low-grade manganiferous-silver ore was investigated by thiourea leaching followed by standard cyanidation. The levels of reagent concentrations in this investigation were 0.0 -1.0 M thiourea and 0.0 -1.0 M sulfuric acid. Temperature and agitation speed were maintained at Z5 °c and 300 rpm, respectively. The dissolution of gold, and silver was shown to be dependent mainly on sulfuric acid and thiourea concentrations. In general, 50.0 % Ag, 98.0 % Au, and 75 % Mn were recovered from a Mn-Ag ore by thiourea leaching. Overall silver extraction of 98.0 % was obtained by cyanidation after thiourea leaching. Thiourea leaching of sodium bisulfite leach residues was also studied, and the total extraction of gold and silver were 97 % and 40 %, respectively. Finally, a two-stage thiourea leach was also investigated.

The trace element geochemistry of the cherty, clay-rich carbonate residuum. Covering much of southern Missouri and adjacent parts of Arkansas was investigated during the early 1970's as part of a statewide geochemical survey of Missouri-1/2/3 The study was environmentally oriented and focused on the character of the "natural' geochemical environment of the state. A great deal of effort was made to collect samples that would represent the geochemical variability of the near-surface environment in an unbiased way. In general, this was accomplished by use of randomization procedures in both collection and analysis. Most of the sampling sites were selected randomly to prevent personal bias from entering into sample selection. In the laboratory, samples were analyzed in a randomized sequence to circumvent the effects of any systematic bias that may have entered into the laboratory procedures. Several residuum samples contained 1 000 parts per million (ppm) or more of Pb, Zn and Ba. All these samples were collected in Washington County in or near the barite district. The frequency distributions shown in figure 1 indicate just how unusual the residuum in Washington County is with regard to these three metals and copper. The shaded parts of the histograms represent the samples from Washington County. The histograms are based on analyses of 141 samples from 38 localities scattered over the subcrop of the Cambrian and Ordovician Formations of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas. Eight localities were selected randomly from over each of four bedrock units--Bonneterre Dolomite, Potosi and Eminence Dolomites, Roubidoux Formation, and the Jefferson City, Powell and Cotter Dolomites. Six localities were selected randomly from over the Gasconade Dolomite. The geochemical "background" for these elements in residuum is defined by samples from outside of Washington County (unshaded part of the histogram); lognormal distribution curves have been fitted to the corresponding parts of each histogram. The rapid decay and disfiguring of stone monuments in urban and desert rural areas has challenged conservators to protect stone surfaces from premature decay. They attempt to halt the natural process of stone decay and possibly to restore the original strength lost mostly by chemical weathering and the loss of binding cement. Ageneral solution is not possible because the physical and chemical characteristics must be considered for different stone types. The failures of stone preservation and restoration are greater in number than the cures. The need for repair of stone decay goes back to evidence of Roman replacement of decaying stone. The presence of excess water in buildings has long been recognized. Moisture tends to enter masonry from air in humid climates, a most important but often underrated factor (Fig. 1) suggesting that sealing should be the answer. Undesirable staining and efflorescence result in accelerated scaling. Today, the great variety of chemicals available to the modem conservator for sealing. consolidating, or hardening stone fall into two very different categories: surface sealers and penetrating stone consolidants, or a combination of both. SEALERS Sealers develop a tight, impervious skin which prevents access of moisture. Surface sealing has saved monuments from decay by eliminating the access of atmospheric humidity. Pressure tends to develop behind the stone surface by moisture escape. Efflorescence, crystal growth action, and freezing can cause considerable spalling (Anderegg, 1949). Flaking results when moisture is trapped behind the sealed surface. Yellowing and blotchiness are also frequently observed. The following sealants are in common use today: linseed oil, paraffin, silicone, urethane, acrylate, and animal blood on stone and adobe. Extensive cracking and yellowing has resulted soon after application. In the past many such treatments have created more problems than cures: 1. Linseed oil and paraffin have been in use for centuries. Embrittlement and yellowing occur rapidly because these are readily attacked by solar ultraviolet radiation. 2. Animal blood as paint has temporarily waterproofed adobe mud and stone masonry. The origin of blood paint has a religious background rooted in the Phoenician and Hebrew cultures. Instant water soluble dried blood can substitute for fresh blood. Winkler (1956) described the history and technique of the use of blood. 3. Silicones have proven very effective and are long lasting. In contrast, acrylates, urethane, and styrene are generally rapidly attacked by UV radiation (Clark et al., 1975). Sealing of Different Rock Types Granitic rocks have a natural porosity traced to 4.5% contraction of quartz, during cooling of the parent magma, compared with only 2% contraction of all other minerals; protection against the hygric forces may require waterproofing of granite in some in- stances. The Egyptian granite obelisk in London is an example. Soon after its relocation from Egypt to London, Cleopatra's Needle was treated, in 1879, with a mixture of Damar resin and wax dissolved in clear petroleum spirit; surface scaling became evident after half a year of exposure to the humid London atmosphere. The treatment of the ancient granite monument from Egypt has denied access of high relative humidity (RH) in London to the trapped salts inherited from the Egyptian desert and has protected the monument from decay (Burgess and Schaffer, 1952). The sister obelisk set up in Central Park, New York City, has fared less favorably because similar treatment was done too late, only after the salts hydrated and hundreds of kilograms of scalings disfigured the obelisk surface (Winkler, 1980). Surface coating of other common stones may be needed. Crystalline marble absorbs moisture from high RH atmospheres: dilation may ensue when curtain panels bow as the moisture starts to expand during daily heating-cooling cycles. A good sealer may prevent the moisture influx provided that no moisture can enter from the inside of the building. Limestones, dolomites and all carbonate rocks are subject to dissolution attack by rainwater, especially in areas where acid rain prevails (Fig. 2). The interaction of sulfates in the atmosphere with the stone can be halted by waterproofing to avoid the formation of soft and more soluble gypsum. The stone surface attack can be diminished if nearly insoluble Ca-sulfite crusts can form, instead of Ca-sulfate. Replacement of fluorite or barium compounds at the stone surface acts as a hardener, rather than a sealant. Sandstones have generally high porosity and rapid water travel can occur along unexpected routes and from any direction. Any surface sealing may do more damage by scaling and bursting than if the stone is left without treatment. Sealing of sandstones is therefore not advised at any time. Testing the efficiency of sealants: Several authors discuss waterproofing materials, silicones, urethanes, acrylates and stearates, as to their water absorption, spreading rates of water on the treated surface, water vapor transmission, resistance to efflorescence, and general appearance (Clark et al., 1975). De Castro (1983) measured the angle of contact of a microdrop (0.004 cm3) on a stone surface as characteristic of the wettability. "Fully grouted rock bolts have been used in mining industry for many years. Significant research has been conducted to evaluate the load transfer behavior of fully grouted rock bolts with experimental programs. However, compared with that, less work has been conducted with analytical modelling. Therefore, in this paper, the authors used an analytical model to study the load transfer behavior of fully grouted rock bolts. To confirm the credibility of this analytical model, an in-situ pull-out test was used to validate this model. There was a close match between the experimental result and the analytical result. Following this, a parametric study was conducted with this analytical model. The influence of coefficients, Young’s modulus of the rock bolt and the diameter of the rock bolt on the load transfer performance of rock bolts were studied. Furthermore, the load distribution along the fully grouted rock bolt was analytically studied. The results show that the axial load in the rock bolt decayed from the loaded end to the free end independent of the pull-out load. However, the trend of the load distribution curve was influenced by the pull-out load. This paper was beneficial to better understand the load transfer mechanism of fully grouted rock bolts.INTRODUCTIONRock bolts have been used in the mining industry for a long time. They are used as the reinforcement tendons to keep the stability of openings in underground mining and the slope in open-pit mining. Furthermore, rock bolts are commonly used not only in the mining engineering, but also in civil engineering (Thompson, Villaescusa, and Windsor, 2012).The rock bolt is a tendon which can be a rod or a cable inserted into a borehole drilled in rock masses or soils. Traditionally, the material of rock bolts was steel. However, engineering practices showed that the steel rock bolts can be easily corroded by the moist environment in underground mines. Next, Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) was used to manufacture rock bolts, which are termed as FRP rock bolts. Experimental results proved that the FRP rock bolts can effectively reinforce the surrounding rock masses without being corroded (Wang et al., 2018)."

Cyclic voltammetry (CV), flotation response, evolved-gas analysis (EGA), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to evaluate the major differences in the surface property and surface reactivity of a selected coal pyrite and a mineral pyrite. Surface properties of pyrite were evaluated in terms of flotation response in the presence of both an anionic fluorosurfactant and sodium hydrosulfide. The charge transfer adsorption and oxidation potential of sodium hydrosulfide were evaluated using cyclic voltammetry. Drastic differences in the flotation response have been observed between the coal pyrite and the mineral pyrite. Significant differences in the cyclic voltammograms at pyrite surfaces of these two sources were also observed. Measurements by XPS and EGA were used to determine the oxidation products and the rate of oxidation of the coal-pyrite and the mineral-pyrite surfaces.

Large reserves of copper are contained in waste dumps which have been created by open-pit mining of porphyry-type copper deposits in the Western United States. Nearly 6 billion tons of copper-bearing material exists in the waste dumps at present, and another billion tons will be added each three to four years as additional material is stripped from the present mines and new open-pit mines are developed. The dumps constitute an enormous resource containing some 7 to 10 billion dollars worth of copper. Increased attention is being given to the recovery of copper by leaching from these dumps as attested by the fact that in 1968 approximately $175 million of copper was recovered by leaching operations. During the leaching process, however, numerous problems exist which prevent complete extraction of the copper from the dumps. Probably the most important problem encountered is the incomplete contact of the copper-bearing materials by the leaching solutions. This problem is mainly created by the formation of physically compacted and chemically cemented layers within the dumps which prevent solution flow to many sections of the interior of the dumps.

In late 1993, Inco Ltd. completed a $600-million environmental improvement project at its Sudbury, Ontario operations -the largest single environmental project ever undertaken by a Canadian corporation. Efficient new facilities and innovative technologies installed during the course of the project have also significantly improved Inco's productivity and competitiveness. In early May 1994, a panel of 18 Inco authors contributed to a Technical Forum, "Environmental Programs at Sudbury," presented at the 96th Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) in Toronto. Their papers have been published in CIM's Toronto `94 Proceedings Volume, pp. 62-77. The following report draws primarily on discussions of Inco's milling and smelting operations published in the Proceedings Volume. The Kamyr countercurrent tower leach process consists of a true countercurrent leach ?with a flocculated ore and fibre mixture entering the top of the tower and a cyanide solution or alternative lixiviant as well as a barren wash solution entering the bottom of the tower. It offers the possibility of including the entire leaching, solid-liquid separation and clarification processes into one unit or tower as opposed to the multiple leach tanks, filtration and clarification sections required in a conventional leach and precipitation plant. The tower process has been demonstrated in the laboratory and found to be effective for leaching gold, silver and other amenable ores. Based on laboratory results, Gencor and Kamyr have jointly constructed a 200 ton per day pilot plant in order to prove the process on a larger semi-production plant scale.

Germanium is produced primarily as a by product from zinc concentrates. The important sources of gallium are alumina ores (bauxites) and zinc concentrates and residues from zinc processing. In addition, gallium as well as germanium may soon be recovered from a depleted copper mine near St. George, Utah. The major uses for germanium are in semiconductors, lenses in infrared optical systems, catalysts, and gamma radiation detectors. The major markets for gallium are in light-emitting diodes, solar cells, laser diodes, integrated circuits, microwave devices, and magnetic bubble memories. CRA projects a healthy growth in the demand for both metals. However, the role of scrap metal will continue to be important over the next decade, thus decreasing the overall demand for primary gallium and primary germanium. This paper summarizes the key elements and the economics of the markets for germanium and gallium. Much of the information, such as plant-by-plant costs of production and estimates of consumption by end use for various countries is from proprietary databases of Charles River Associates.

6.1-SOIL MECHANICS WALTER C. SHERMAN, JR. 6.1.1-DEFINITION Soil mechanics is concerned with the behavior of soils in relation to the design, construction and performance of engineering works. In this context, soils include all uncemented materials, such as, gravels, sands, silts and clays, either naturally or artificially deposited, and, under certain conditions, weakly cemented, badly broken or weathered rocks. Many types of mine wastes have physical properties similar to those of soils and thus are amenable to analysis by the principles of soil mechanics. The principles of soil mechanics are used to solve such problems as the stability of various types of structures with respect to failure of the supporting soils, determination of soil pressures and deformations in the design of foundations and retaining structures, analyses of seepage and under seepage, and stability with respect to sliding of excavated and natural slopes and embankments. 6.1.2--SOIL PROPERTIES Soils are classified on the basis of index properties, such as, particle-size distribution and plasticity characteristics. The Unified Soil Classification System1 used to classify soils for engineering purposes is shown in Table 6-1. Other physical properties important from an engineering standpoint include natural water content, density, permeability, shear strength and compressibility. Physical properties are evaluated on the basis of carefully conducted laboratory tests. Procedures for laboratory testing are presented by Lambe. 2 Soils, either of natural or artificial deposition, are complex three-phase materials consisting of solids, water and gas (usually air or water vapor). One of the most important principles in soil mechanics is based on the concept of effective stress in the soil-water system. A stress, a, applied to a saturated soil is taken partly by the soil particles (effective stress, a'), and partly by the water in the voids (neutral stress or pore water pressure, u,) so that a' = a - u,. Only the effective stress affects the mobilization of frictional resistance between soil particles. In partially saturated soils, the pore-water pressure is negative due to capillary effects. The effective stress relation remains valid for small negative pore pressures, but anomolies arise if the soil is significantly unsaturated. In this case, the pore pressure is commonly assumed as equal to the pore air pressure, u,, so that [ u' = u - u..] 6.1.3--SOIL EXPLORATIONS Soil explorations are carried out by borings or test pits. Hvorslev3 has reviewed procedures and boring requirements, such as, type, depth and spacing employed. In general, soil strata are logged and representative exploratory samples are recovered for classification purposes and for determining the subsurface soil profile, which is constructed utilizing also knowledge of the geology of a site. Until now, only the range of typical construction projects which are repeated over and over during the life of a coal mine have been discussed. This chapter looks at underground construction projects which occur only once or twice during the life of any given mine and are major construction projects in both time and cost. These projects usually require the services of an outside engineering and construction firm with hands- on experience in design installation. Because of this involvement with engineering and construction firms (EIC), the role of the construction engineer will change from one of actively de- signing and directing tasks to one of planning, inspection, and quality control. To reflect this role change in the discussions, the focus of this chapter will be changed to a broad overview of project participation. Of course, the projects under consideration in this chapter could easily fill more than one book on their design and installation. In addition, major construction projects are extremely site specific, requiring months of data collection about site geology, physical conditions, and potential excavation and construction requirements. Therefore, no attempt shall be made to discuss any detailed construction aspects as was done in earlier chapters. The purpose of this chapter is to present the fundamental concerns of a staff engineer or supervisor. This engineer does not make the decisions on choosing the EIC firm, but assists and interacts with their project team to accomplish the goals set forth by higher management. The construction topics to be reviewed fall into three main categories. The first category is highlighted by the installation of a main surge bin; the second is typified by the construction of an underground shop; and the third category encompasses special projects such as rotary dumps, crusher stations, and foremen's offices. These categories highlight the differences between degrees of mine responsibilities for project completion. The first topic is usually a turnkey project by an E/C firm for a given mine. The second topic represents the leading role of the mine in the project with a contractor as a support service or equipment supplier only. The third topic, special projects, is an example of a joint venture-between a contractor (leading partner) and mine management. These roles can change with any given project, but the changes in management responsibilities for the construction engineer can be nicely illustrated for the purposes of this text. The first step toward constructing major mine projects is to analyze the mine which influence their design. From the mine management standpoint, these parameters should reflect the role the mine will play in the project construction. In other words, what is the nature of the proposed mine environment and what are the material, labor, and time requirements needed to assist or direct the chosen engineering and construction firm? Answering these questions requires some basic project planning and cost estimation work. Here, only a general treatment is necessary, since detailed discussions of these topics will follow in Chapters 8 and 10. For those persons interested in the role of the EIC contractor, I suggest beginning by reviewing the article by Beall, "The Role of an Engineering and Construction Contractor," presented in the October 1980 issue of Mining Engineering magazine.

American mining companies operate many drum hoists, hoisting from varying depths with varying payloads. This paper reviews the procedure for selecting optimum wire rope constructions for existing hoisting installations. Selection for proposed installations, along with recommended hoisting parameters, is also discussed. To achieve optimum rope performance, preventive and corrective maintenance procedures are required and are reviewed here, along with examples of rope problems and their causes.

This paper reviews various bauxite classification schemes with respect to the differences in texture, composition and geological associations of the deposits. It demonstrates that a techno-economic classification, based on: a) associated rock type - lateritic versus karstic, b) content of aluminum ore minerals - gibbsite, boehmite and diaspore, and c) gangue minerals (iron oxides etc.) has a geological basis with natural cut-off points for the bauxite types identified. Thus, this scheme is seen as applicable to bauxite resources. It also provides a basis for their rational exploitation taking into consideration the long-term interests of both the bauxite producing and consuming countries. Against this background, the industrial mineral or non-metallurgical grades of bauxite are seen as localised and relatively rare occurrences. Their consumption should, therefore, be aimed toward the specific (hence more remunerative) products as indicated by the bauxite characteristics.

INTRODUCTION Metal electrodeposition processes are of fundamental technological importance to a number of fields. Electrorefining, electrowinning, electroplating, and electrogalvanizing have all been the subject of intense study for over a century. More recently, electrochem- ical deposition has played a critical role in advances in microelectronics and lately has been an enabling technology for the production of certain nanostructured materials. Electrometallurgists have most frequently been concerned with the structure and morphology of massive deposits. For example, in metal recovery steps such as electrorefining and electrowinning, deposits demonstrating adherent coarse-grained characteristics are most desirable. In the case of electroplating, a bright fine-grained, tenacious and strongly adherent deposit is required. The fabrication of microelectronic devices and the production of nanoscale structures such as nanoparticles, nanowires, and nanorods requires a keen understanding of early stage deposition effects. The initial stages of metal deposition, usually referred to as electroclystallization, are fundamentally linked to nucleation and growth phenomena. Early stage deposits are typically very ordered. Whereas, bulk metal deposition structures are much more ran- dom. In both cases, the discharge of a metal ion at an electrified interface is represented by simple cathodic reduction as follows: [ ] Me(H2O)xn[ ] is a hydrated metal ion residing in the bulk solution and Me is the metal atom occupying a crystallographic lattice position. Newmont has been on a focused path of improving operations for many years. After the merger of Newmont and Santa Fe Pacific Gold, Newmont created significant synergies of over $50million per year in Nevada, primarily through optimal ore movements and consolidation of various functions. During the current period of low gold and copper prices, Newmont has refocused its efforts on efficient operations worldwide. This paper will describe the methods and programs that continue to be implemented at Newmont's many mine facilities in Nevada. Newmont has used a combination of computer technology, optimal use of infrastructures, procurement strategies, functional consolidation, enhanced mine planning and a variety of available metallurgical processing options to decrease the cost of operations and increase profitability.

A large number of minerals and chemicals (Table 1), some mineral-derived, are used in the treatment of both potable water and domestic sewage waste water and solids (Anon., 1990). In water treatment there are ten principal process uses as shown in Table 2 (Anon., 1990), which also lists the major chemicals in each process. Since lime (calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, and dolomitic lime) is the largest chemical (by tonnage) used in water treatment, this chapter will deal primarily with this product. Note that it is included in five of the process uses shown in Table 2, and that indirectly it is also used in at least one other category (taste and odor control, where lime is used with potassium permanganate to provide optimum pH condition). POTABLE WATER TREATMENT Water Softening The biggest use for lime in water treatment involves water softening, where it serves to reduce carbonate hardness caused by dissolved bicarbonate and carbonate compounds. Currently there are more than 1000 domestic water softening plants (Table 3) located in most sections of the country, but particularly in Ohio, other midwestern states, Florida, and Texas, where limestone bedrock abounds (Anon., 1990). Among the other uses for lime in water treatment are coagulation, disinfection, and removal of heavy metals due to high pH softening, removal of certain radioactive and organic compounds and fluorides, neutralization of acidic water, removal of silica, particularly with dolomitic lime, and removal of color. Most of the above advantages accompany water softening, although at some plants lime is used specifically for one purpose, such as silica removal with dolomitic lime, minimizing pipeline corrosion by addition of lime to correct an aggressive water, and others. Hardness in water comprises two types - carbonate hardness, caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium carbonates and bi- carbonates, and non-carbonate hardness caused by dissolved non- carbonate salts, particularly calcium sulfate, calcium chloride, magnesium sulfate, and magnesium chloride. Total hardness is the sum of the carbonate hardness and non-carbonate hardness. Waters are classified as soft (0 to 75 mg/L as CaCO,), moderate (75 to 150 mg/L), hard (150 to 300 mg/L), and very hard (above 300 mg/L). Most water plants strive to reduce total hardness to about 100 mg/L, although in recent years the tendency in some cities has been to allow a little higher value in order to reduce both chemical costs and the amount of water softening sludges produced. There are four basic types of softening plants: lime softening, primarily to reduce carbonate hardness; lime-soda softening, for reduction of both types of hardness (in some plants caustic soda is used in place of soda ash, but it is more costly); split lime-zeolite, where a base exchange mineral is employed in place of soda ash (this system also requires salt [sodium chloride] to regenerate the zeolite mineral); and finally zeolite softening, which is generally used in small systems for private houses and small municipalities. Principal disadvantages of the latter system are its relatively high cost and the salt requirement, which introduces considerable quantities of soluble salts into the waste water discharge system.

The population of the Rhondda underwent a spectacular rise as energy requirements increased in the mid-nineteenth century. The rapid expansion in the demand for coal transformed the population from a few hundred sheep farmers in the eighteenth century, into a thriving coal-based economy of some 168,000 inhabitants in 1924. Cochrane (1958) put forward the idea that the differential migration of more healthy men from the Rhondda Fach during the period since the peak of population in 1924, had resulted in a respiratorily-impaired residual population. This idea was used to explain the reduced survival of miners & ex-miners aged 55-64 years from this valley as compared with a similar group from Leigh in England. Using the proportional hazards regression model of Cox (1972), a comparison is presented of the exact twenty-year mortality of migrant and non-migrant miners & ex-miners and non-miners from the Rhondda Fach. The analysis makes allowance for the pattern of migration throughout the twenty-year period and adjusts for the confounding influence of variables such as age, occupation, and category of Simple Pneumoconiosis. The results indicate that contrary to expectation, any effect of migration upon mortality is manifest only at higher ages. Furthermore, for these men, the migrants have worse survival than the non-migrants. Also, contrary to expectation in the light of work by the British Coal Board (Soutar et al, 1982) there is no evidence of increased mortality amongst men with category I simple pneumoconiosis. INTRODUCTION [The Background] In September 1950, the Medical Research Council's Pneumoconiosis Research Unit at Penarth in South Wales initiated a study of lung disease in the smaller of the two Rhondda Valleys - the Rhondda Fach. At that time, the primary interest was in assessing the possible role of pulmonary tuberculosis in the aetiology of the serious (complicated) form of coal-workers' pneumoconiosis, i.e. Progressive Massive Fibrosis. The Rhondda Fach is situated in South Wales, some 25 km north-west of Cardiff. It is a narrow winding river valley about 12 km long, and approximately 1 km wide. The name means Little Rhondda; there is a corresponding Big Rhondda - the Rhondda Fawr. Together, these valleys make-up most of the Rhondda Municipal Borough. Following the initial survey in 1950-51, there have been several follow-up studies of this population. In addition, amongst numerous other investigations to unravel the aetiology of coal-workers' pneumoconiosis, Medical Research Council teams studied various other (sample) population groups, particularly in the industrial areas of the adjacent Aberdare Valley, and in Staveley and Leigh in England. The agricultural areas of the Vale of Glamorgan in South Wales, and Annandale in Scotland were also studied.
