Merchants perform a number of functions in the copper market. As a major distribution arm of the copper industry, they secure scrap and other copper bearing materials for processing into usable refined shapes. These are ultimately sold to fabricators. Merchants ' hedging and arbitrage activities help keep values in proper relationship from product to product or region to region. Through these switching and trading operations, they optimize the flow of copper from mine to consumer. And finally, merchants act as a repository for copper units during times of surplus and a stockpile from which to draw during tines of shortage.

Historically, this area produced gold and silver from many well-known vein deposits, like Tayoltita, Topia, and San Jose de Gracia. Modern exploration identified three categories of deposits: 1) low grade porphyry golds in shallow level dacite porphyries; 2) batholith-related deposits; and 3) those formed in volcanic sequences of Late Cretaceous to Late Tertiary. At least four porphyry golds have been identified, of which Metates is best known. These are formed by and within dacite porphyries, associated hydrothermal breccias and sometimes within surrounding metasediments. Their ages are from mid-Cretaceous to Early Tertiary. Precious metal deposits associated with batholiths occur as veins, contact haloes in metasediments or volcanics, skarns, tectonic breccias, hydrothermal tourmaline breccias, dacite dikes or as disseminated or stockwork deposits such as La Fortuna. Several new gold discoveries were made in older Early Tertiary Volcanic Sequences and in the younger Tertiary volcanics within prominent structures exceeding 3 to 5 km in lengths. Some of these are open-pittable but most have to be mined by underground methods.

Particle-size Distribution Specifications for Particulates. Feed to and finished products from size-reduction operations are defined in terms of the particulate sizes involved. It is also well to know whether the ultimate individual particle is being measured, or, if any aggregation or agglomeration of particles exists, whether this has been created by the size-reduction operation. The most complete description of a powder is given by its particle¬size distribution. This can be plotted in terms of cumulative percent oversize or undersize in relation to the diameters of particles, or it can be plotted as a distribution of the amounts present in each unit of diameter against the several diameters. It is common to employ a weight basis for percentage, but there are some data in the literature where frequency, or number of particles, is used. The basis of percent¬age, whether weight, frequency, or some less commonly used factor, should be specified, as also should be stated the diameter, its units, and preferably whether determined by sieve, settling velocity, or other¬wise. Fig. I presents two sets of distributions-ore cumulative and the other in unit intervals. The slopes of the 5-µ intervals of the cumulative curves are converted to percent per micron and plotted as a block, or histogram, from which smooth curves are derived. Powder A has a narrower, or tighter, size range for the bulk of its weight than powder B. Both materials have the same weights below and above the size marked by the arrow. Simpler treatments of distribution are possible. In some cases the significant value is the top size. Since the 100% point is dubious, some amount, as 95 or 98%, so specified, can be called top size. In other cases the percent on some sieve helps define coarseness. Merely stating that all, or all but a small percentage, passes a given sieve is inadequate for defining the true fineness or a material. Complete parti¬cle-size analysis to show the distribution is essential for most compari¬sons and calculations. Particle-Size Equations. A number of equations have been pro¬posed to correlate the quantity of a particulate material with its parti¬cle size to obtain a distribution relationship. The advantages of using vertical pulsed columns as replacements for conventional mixer/settlers in the uranium industry have been known for some time. The advantages of the columns offer include a reduction in real estate for the plant, elimination of diluent evaporation and crud formation. This paper presents the findings of laboratory tests of pulsed columns extracting copper from pregnant leach solutions and also discusses potential advantages of the pulse column in copper solvent extraction.

Newmont has a large integrated operation in Northern Nevada with numerous mines, stockpiles, and processing facilities. There are over ninety defined metallurgical ore types and over sixty defined gold recovery process options. To take better advantage of the available synergies, a complete Nevada wide mine plan and process model along with a mixed Integer and Linear Programming optimization tool has been developed and implemented. This system is maintained and operated by a Nevada Planning Group. Standard in-house planning software tools and methods have been implemented at all mine sites. While increasing the effectiveness of planning in Nevada, these changes have allowed a significant reduction in overall Mine Engineering staff.

Boddington Gold Mine is situated 130km South-east of Perth, WA. The operation is managed by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd. The Direct Leach plant was commissioned in mid 1986 at a rate of 3 million tonnes per annum. The plant was upgraded to 4.5 mtpa in 1988 and almost immediately to 6mtpa in 1989. Subsequent debottlenecking resulted in further increases in throughput up to 7mtpa by 1991. The SupergenelBasement Plant was constructed in 1990 and commissioned in early 1991. It was designed to process both copper-gold-silver anomalies within the laterite gold orebody and future hard rock ores. The Supergene plant incorporated control potential s­ulphidisation (CPS) and flotation ahead of CIL to remove a host of copper minerals. It operated in that configuration for 2 years at rates up to 350,000 tpa and average grades of 6.0 git gold and 1.2% copper. Gold recovery averaged 90.7% and copper recovery averaged 80.0% before the flotation circuit was decommissioned in March 1993. Quartz hosted high grade, free milling oxide and basement ores were discovered at the northern end of the orebody in 1990 and now comprise the major feed source to the basement plant. Oxide ores are currently milled at a rate of 550,000 tpa, while basement ores are milled at a 420,000 tpa rate. Metallurgical testwork during the feasibility stages indicated that up to 30% of gold in plant feed could be recovered by gravity separation methods. It was also highlighted that signifi­cant improvements in overall plant recovery and reduced operating costs would be achieved by maximising gravity gold recovery ahead of cyanidation. To achieve this, rec;iesign and upgrade of the gravity circuit was necessary.

Introduction Significant increases in extraction ratio on the order of 6% to 8%, equivalent to as much as 142 t/m (48 st per ft) of panel, have occurred at the Big Island trona mine during the last five years with the help of a practical rock mechanics program. This increase in resource recovery also has contributed to improvements in productivity. Both conventional and continuous machine mining have been used to mine two flat-lying trona beds at depths of 250 m and 260 m (820 ft and 853 ft) in the Green River Formation in southwestern Wyoming. Conventional room-and-pillarmining originally was conducted in panels with extractions of 5 8% to 60%. The use of yield pillars has allowed the panel extraction in increase to 66%. Continuous machine mining was introduced, with a 64% extraction ratio using long, narrow pillars and wide rooms. Further improvements in resource recovery seem feasible in light of present mining experience. The rock mechanics program consisted of field instrumentation to determine the pillar and roof response hole locations. to mining and computer modeling to evaluate the stability of various layouts, which were then adopted for mining. Mining background Stauffer Chemical Co.'s Big Island mine and refinery are located 40 km (25 miles) northwest of Green River, WY. Underground mining operations supply trona, a sodium mineral, to the refinery to produce soda ash. The room-and-pillar method is used to mine two 3 to 3.6 m (10 to 12 ft) thick, flat-laying seams at depths of about 250 to 260 m (820 to 850 ft). Mine production in 1986 was 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st). The rare earth elements (REE) which include the 15 lanthanide elements (Z = 57 through 71) and yttrium (Z = 39) are so called because the elements were originally isolated in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as oxides from rare minerals. Most REE are not as uncommon in nature as the name implies. Cerium, the most abundant REE (Table 1), comprises more of the earth's crust than copper or lead. Many REE are more common than tin and molyb¬denum, and all but promethium are more common than silver or mercury (Taylor, 1964). Promethium (Z = 61) is best known as an artificial element, but has been reported in very minute quantities in natural materials. Lanthanide elements with low atomic numbers are generally more abundant in the earth's crust than those with high atomic numbers. In addition, lanthanide elements with even atomic numbers are two to seven times more abundant than adjacent lan¬thanides (Table 1) with odd atomic numbers. The lanthanide elements traditionally have been divided into two groups: the light rare earths (LREE), lanthanum through eu¬ropium (Z = 57 through 63); and the heavy rare earths (HREE), gadolinium through lutetium (Z = 64 through 71). Although yttrium is the lightest REE, it is usually grouped with the HREE to which it is chemically and physically similar. The REE are lithophile elements (elements enriched in the earth's crust) that invariably occur together naturally because all are trivalent (except for Ce+4 and Eu+2 in some environments) and have similar ionic radii. Increase in atomic number in the lanthanide group is accompanied by addition of electrons to an inner level rather than the outer shell. Consequently, there is no change in valence with change in atomic number, and the lanthanide elements all fall into the same cell of the periodic table. The chemical and physical differences that do exist within the REE group are caused by small differences in ionic radius, and generally result in segre¬gation of REE into deposits enriched in either light lanthanides or heavy lanthanides plus yttrium. The relative abundance of individual lanthanide elements has been found useful in the modelling of rock-forming processes. Comparisons are generally made using a logarithmic plot of lanthanide abundances normalized to abundances in chondritic (stony) meteorites. The use of this method eliminates the abundance vari¬ation between lanthanides of odd and even atomic number, and allows determination of the extent of fractionation between the lanthanides because such fractionation is not considered to have taken place during chondrite formation. The method is also useful because chondrites are thought to be compositionally similar to the original earth's mantle. Europium anomalies (positive or negative departures of europium from chondrite-normalized plots) have been found to be particularly effective for petrogenetic modelling. REE were originally produced in minor amounts from small deposits in granite pegmatite, the geologic environment in which they were discovered. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, REE came mainly from placer deposits. With the exception of the most abundant lanthanide el¬ements (cerium, lanthanum, and neodymium), individual REE were not commercially available until the 1940s. Since 1965, most of the world's REE have come from two hard rock deposits: Mountain Pass, United States, and Bayan Obo, China. GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION OF REE DEPOSITS More than 70% of the world's REE raw materials come from three countries: China, the United States, and Australia. China emerged as a major producer of REE raw materials during the 1980s, while Australian and United States market share decreased dramatically (Fig. 1). Table 2 gives recent annual production figures along with estimated reserves by country, and Fig. 2 shows loca¬tions of significant REE mining. MINERALS THAT CONTAIN REE Although REE comprise significant amounts of many minerals, almost all production has come from less than ten minerals. Table 3 lists minerals that have yielded REE commercially or have po¬tential for production in the future. Extraction from a potentially economic REE resource is strongly dependant on its REE miner¬alogy. Minerals that are easily broken down, such as bastnasite, are more desirable than those that are difficult to dissociate, such as allanite. In general, producing deposits contain REE-bearing min¬erals that are relatively easy to concentrate because of coarse grain size or other attributes. One of the problems encountered when constructing a roadway is the planned route often needs to cross soils that are soft and highly compressible. An approach to dealing with soft and compressible soils is to construct the fill from lightweight materials, thereby reducing the stresses on underlying soils. Most lightweight fills have approximately the same cost, so the most important consideration when choosing a lightweight fill is that the material properties of the lightweight fill match the conditions existing at the site. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) has been used as a lightweight fill material for more than 30 years. The EPS used for road fills is typically in the range of 0.5 to 2 lb/ft3, and has a compressive strength of in the range of 10 to 30 lb/in2. If a higher strength material is needed, then the material density is increased, which also adds to the cost of the material. Another type of lightweight fill material that is commonly being used is lightweight aggregate (LWA). LWA can be created by passing slate or shale through a rotary kiln or reheating coal fly ash with other materials to form pellets or aggregate. Several companies throughout the U.S market these materials under a variety of names. LWA can have a unit weight from 45-80 lb/ft3. For sites where trucking granular fill does not pose a problem, this material may be an alternative to EPS. One of the drawbacks to using LWA is the availability of the material. Only a few companies are manufacturing LWA, so it may not be available or may be cost prohibitive in certain areas of the country. Lightweight flyash blocks have been produced which may fill the gap in unit weight between the EPS and LWA. Blocks have been produced with a unit weight as low as 30 lb/ft3. They are relatively inexpensive, easy to handle, and have a moderate compressive strength. Although the unit weight is dramatically higher than EPS, the strength is also higher. If lateral stabilization of the fill is a problem, then geofabrics or grids can be incorporated into the design to add lateral strength.

He has previously held senior management positions with Trans- African Mining Ltd., Anglo American Corporation, Consolidation Coal Company, Smith International Inc., Adams Resources Inc., and Golder Associates. John started his mining career as a coal miner in the coal fields of northern England. Dr. Wilson received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Durham, his master's degree from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, and his doctorate from the University of Witwatersrand, all in mining engineering. Today, Dr. Wilson is going to address the subject "Hiring Recent College Graduates Versus Hiring Experienced Mining Engineers." Please welcome Dr. Wilson. DR. JOHN WILSON: The advantages and disadvantages of hiring engineers directly out of school or those with some experience are often discussed among mining company managers. The choice is essentially dependent on the culture of each company, the company's maturity and strategic direction, and the growth or phaseout plans in vogue at the time of the decision. Generally, major, established mining companies employ entry-level college graduates and train them, introduce them to company culture, include them in a succession plan to replace retirees, fill vacancies, and provide management to direct future growth of the company. However, some large companies take a different approach. During restructuring, down-sizing, etc., some companies do not hire college graduates directly from school. Rather, they tend to recruit from other companies or absorb valuable personnel available following acquisitions or mergers. While this is a logical approach, it seldom provides for the future management and leadership needs of the company. A clear example of this failure is found when reviewing the hiring practices, or lack thereof, in the coal industry of the 1950s.

A critical examination of the published results on the hemolytic ability of different forms of silica viz, quartz, cristobalite, tridymite and amorphous silica is made and it is concluded that quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite have nearly equal longterm abilities (within ±15%) but much larger than the hemolytic ability of amorphous silica when correctly compared on a per unit surface area basis. Also, a one-to-one correlation appears to be valid between the hemolysis and fibrosis studies. New results on the photoacoustic spectroscopy of amorphous silica particles heat-treated at 100, 200, 400, 550, 700, 820 and 1050°C are presented and it is observed that the intensity of the sharp silanol band at 3745 cm-1 and hemolysis by these particles have nearly the same temperature dependence. In contrast the intensity of the bulk IR modes (viz. the 797 cm-1 band) does not show any significant temperature dependence. These observations demonstrate that the surface SiOH species are involved in hemolysis by silica particles. Key words: silica polymorphs; hemolysis; silanol species

Specialty sand and bentonite are produced in the plateau province from the Bidahochi Formation near Sanders, Apache County, Arizona. It appears that deposits of both sand and bentonite formed during the Pliocene in fluvial and lacustrine environments, respectively, along the west side of the Defiance Uplift. The bentonite is an alteration product of airborne vitric ash that fell or was washed into lakes. In the Cheto district, the individual bentonite horizons, which range from less than a foot to more than 10 feet thick, are restricted to the position of the medial volcanic member. Bentonite production began at the Allentown mine in 1924 and the Chambers mine in 1926. In 1933 strip mining of the extensive deposits in the Cheto district commenced. Production increased each year to a peak of 270,000 tons in 1957. As a result of the introduction of synthetic zeolites into petroleum refining, production declined. About 40,000 tons of bentonite are currently produced from the district each year. Bentonite is shipped out of State for processing into desiccants, thickeners, and acid-activated clay products. The specialty sand was derived from Permian sandstones and deposited by streams draining the Defiance Uplift. Although stream channels are usually restricted to the upper member of the Bidahochi, stratigraphically above the bentonite horizon, a few actually cut through the bentonite. The well-sorted sand, suitable for use as a proppant in hydraulically fractured oil and gas wells, is localized in elongate lenses along the margins of the channels. These lenses range from 5 to 50 feet in thickness and often extend thousands of feet in both width and length. The sand is about 97 percent silica, has a yield of 40 percent in the minus 20 plus 40 mesh size fraction, and has a roundness of 0.6 to 0.7 on the Krumbein scale. Production of this sand began about 1961. All of the current production, which amounts to about 40,000 tons per year, is sold in the petroleum-producing area near Farmington, New Mexico.

Wet magnetic separation methods for the recovery of hematite and chromite fines and ultrafines were investigated. These methods included wet high-intensity and high-gradient magnetic separation, carrier or "piggy-hack" magnetic separation, magnetic field-induced aggregation and magnetic seeding. This investigation indicated that wet magnetic separation is more efficient for fines and ultrafines. This investigation also indicated that other methods can be used to enhance the particle aggregation and/or the magnetic response. The magnetic behavior of these minerals with respect to the magnetizing field, temperature and particle size is also presented.

The Fosfago phosphate rock concentrator is located in the state of Goias, Brazil, 300 km south of Brasilia. The ore is from an enriched carbonatite, which was discovered in 1971 during exploration for pyrochlore niobium ore. The flowsheet was developed in Brazil by personnel from Agrico Chemical Company and Consolidated South America. Engineering was provided by Codemin, a subsidiary of Consolidated, Engineering and construction management was pro- vided by both Agrico and Consolidated personnel who formed the Fosfago team. The concentrator was designed for 500,000 tpy of 37-38% P2Oj dried product. The facilities consist of open pit mining, crushing, stockpiling, and concentration. The product is pipelined seven km to a filtering, flash drying, and railroad loadout station. The plant was successfully started in May 1979.

Companies are constantly searching for more effective methods of controlling and reducing costs. In recent years increased emphasis has been placed on cost reporting to the middle manager and down to the first-line foreman because this is the place where the money is really spent. Traditionally, operations management has been relegated to using cost systems designed by financial management for the use of financial management. They reflect the machinery necessary to produce profit and loss statements, and so-called cost reports emanating from these systems frequently have a heavy orientation toward product costing rather than the cost that an individual manager or foreman actually controls. In addition to direct operating costs by function or product type, they often include overhead allocations from local operations as well as from the home office. This type of full-absorption costing has many worthwhile uses but is of little or no use to operations management for cost control purposes. It is particularly discouraging to many supervisors because it includes so many categories of cost over which they have little or no control. It is for this reason that modern, aggressively managed companies are increasingly moving in the direction of responsibility cost reporting. It is the objective of responsibility cost reporting to report only direct operating costs over which the individual manager or foreman has complete control, thus facilitating cost control by fixing responsibility for cost.

The mining business has numerous risks: equipment availability, labor disruptions, foreign exchange rate, etc., but one of the more important risks is assessing the geology. Improving the “intelligence” of geology can and will have significant positive effect on reducing mining risk and thus enhancing operational and financial performance. The use of the advanced Radio Imaging Method (RIM-IV) on coal seams and ore bodies can create useful two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) high-resolution images that provide mining engineers with additional intelligence to better plan and improve operations. Improved operational performance will reduce costs and enable mining companies to meet market and financial commitments. For the past decade the underground coal mining industry has been moving toward “super panels” in long-wall mining, and “super sections” for room-and-pillar mining. These mining conventions employ wider faces, longer gate roads, greater room-and-pillar density, and an increased scale in the amount and complexity of mining equipment. An obvious economy of scale exists: amortization of setup investments over greater volume of coal enables mine management to reduce fixed cost per ton. Restricted by equipment considerations, face widths have currently reached about 1,100 ft. Wider longwall panels are planned, with 1,400-ft widths, but this requires an incremental step in hardware that the original equipment manufacturers will soon bring to market. However, longwall panel length has not yet reached its limits, with some panels planned up to 25,000 ft. While longwall panel length is generally dictated by reserve size and extent, practical restrictions in mine planning also include seam thickness, ventilation requirements, or restrictions involving methane drainage. Super panels have certainly enabled the industry to keep pushing the limits of productivity improvement. However, important considerations in mine planning, now and especially in the future, will be driven in large part by geological factors. While larger developments improve productivity and capture economies of scale, the fact that super panels can contain at least four times the area or coal volume means that the probability of encountering serious anomalies is at least four times greater than with the “conventional” panels. Given the increased probability of encountering anomalies, improved assessment of geology is important for super panels and super sections. Proper due diligence requires a thorough and competent evaluation of a mining property and its ore reserve. Using improved geostatistical techniques is most important, and improving the base data for the analysis is equally important. The old cliché “garbage in, garbage out” certainly applies. Also, the quality of coal reserves is (or has been) declining, so, in the future, mining will be in deeper and most likely thinner seams—and these seams appear to contain greater anomalies that threaten efficient operations. To counter the impact of reserve deterioration, the industry is moving toward greater use of geophysical tools and services. Fortunately, tools such as the Radio Imaging Method™ (RIM-IV) system have been improved and can provide the industry with enhanced 2-D and 3-D images of coal seams and ore bodies. To identify and profile the best areas of a coal reserve, geologists, engineers, and mine managers need greater intelligence in the form of RIM-IV tomographic maps of longwall panels and room-and-pillar sections. These images have enhanced the understanding of in-seam features, which in turn has improved operational plans and performance.

The report on cut and cover construction as assembled by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development covered 17 different countries based on a total of just under 400 individual replies of which about 30% of the replies were from the United States. In general, the review of replies to the questionnaire led to the impression that cut and cover construction is a very inadequate method which needed many improvements. This unfavorable judgment, however, resulted in the manner in which questions were asked rather than in the method itself, It can be concluded that the cut and cover construction method has proved itself as an excellent method and that it has reached a high degree of technological perfection, but inadequacies stilt exist, and for purposes of complete evaluation, comparisons with mining tunnelling methods should be carried out. The principal problem in cut and cover construction is the interaction during construction between the construction process and the existing use of the surface and subsurface environment. The greatest impediments to cut and cover construction have little to do with the physical works being constructed, but more with creating a site in which the work can be performed. Utility relocation, traffice maintenance, and protection of existing structures are major problems for the construction contractor, and too frequently receive insufficient attention in preconstruction planning and design. Recent advances in rock-mass mechanics and computational technology now allow for the stability analysis of excavations in "wet" mines where mining-induced changes in rock mass deformation and fluid flow are coupled and time dependent. In addition to water pressure and flow in jointed, possibly porous, rock masses, all of the usual dry-mine parameters, including the premining stress state and rock-mass properties, are taken into account. Finite-element analyses of shafts and tunnels, as circular, elliptical, rectangular and arched-rectangular hole shapes excavated in an initially stressed and pressurized rock mass, indicate that the usual guidelines for optimum shape and orientation of single openings apply. Here, optimum means maximizing the minimum wall safety factor or, equivalently, minimizing the peak stress concentration. The results also show that failure originates in elements at the wall and the minimum safety factor at the wall in the wet case is always less than the dry case, regardless of drainage time allowed.

Julian Malnic makes comments from his experience base as an entrepreneur and founder of Nautilus Minerals Inc. in 1995 and will speak from an independent viewpoint of the commercial setting of the status quo of the proto-industry and the major factors likely to have major influence over its future. The presentation questions these factors and the role they will play. Do we need metals from the oceans? Understanding the competing and established terrestrial sources of each commodity is essential in comprehending how a marine competitor can profit. What are the rates of discovery for marine minerals? At what point will marine explorers start to impact the terrestrial copper and zinc exploration sector? The advance of technology is important in finding, imaging and mining SMS deposits, but which new technologies offer the advantage to mining in the ocean and which to mining on the land? Several competitors have now joined Nautilus as competitors to this global pioneer of SMS exploration/production. The membership of the major miners in the marine sector is growing steadily with important relationships developing but many have not put a toe in the water yet. A path of increasing width is opening to commercialization of SMS miners but crusts and nodules, as bearers of copper ? also found in SMS, and nickel ? also found in widespread nickel laterite deposits on land, are unlikely, in this perspective, to be winners this century unless highly valued minor metals are targeted.

As part of the waste characterisation program to address site reclamation, WISMUT GmbH initiated 56 columns operated as large-scale humidity cell tests. The columns were initiated to assess the acid generation characteristics of waste rock from 14 waste rock piles distributed around the site. Of the 56 tests, 11 are ongoing and have been operational in excess of 160 weeks. The results to date from these long-term tests are surnrnarised. In particular, the methods for, and importance of, establishing the availability of the carbonate neutralisation potential and acid generation potential respectively, are discussed. Geochemical controls on uranium, and the conformity between the geochemical models MINTEQA2 and EQ3/6 in assessing these controls are discussed. Testing indicates that waste rock with an MS-NP:AP ratio in excess of about 2.7 should result in net neutral pH conditions.
