"The decline of the “super cycle” has placed an end to a decade of production-focused strategies, with operating cost growing at rates higher than production. Today, the sector is placed on a tough ride and forced to shift focus to cash preservation and efficient cost management. However, most cost management systems in the minerals industry are not conceived as value driving tools but to meet financial accounting and reporting needs. This research draws from a the development of an innovative cost management methodology that applies Activity-Based Bottom-Up cost budgeting and continuous improvement tools to develop a value-driven cost management system for sustainable improvement of operational efficiency and cost reduction. The methodology was successfully tested in the Andina underground mine III Panel sector of Corporation del Cobre (CODELCO), in Chile. INTRODUCTION Cost management is fundamental to profitability of any industrial project. Even more essential in mining, an industry that deals with commodities, which prices are dictated by the market and are beyond the management capacity of the company. The end of the mining “super cycle” and the advent in 2008 of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), placed an end to a decade of production focused strategies, with operating cost growing at rates higher than production. The sector was placed on a tough ride and forced to shift focus to cash preservation and efficient cost management. Many mining companies have seen themselves into the urgent need of cost management systems capable of achieving sustainable productivity gains and consistent profitability. Cost management is composed of three main processes: estimation, budgeting and control [1]. A number of conventional techniques have been used for cost estimation and budgeting for many years. However, most cost control systems in the minerals industry cannot be referred to as “cost management” since they are conceived to fulfil accounting and reporting needs, rather than to improve operational efficiency [2]. In general, conventional cost budgeting and control systems in mining use a “top-down” methodology, which lacks of necessary details, and fail as a management tool leading to undesirable results [3]."

BP neural network is a multilayer feedforward network trained by error back-propagation algorithm, which is one of the most widely used neural network models. However, BP neural network has exposed more and more shortcomings and deficiencies with the expansion of the application scope. In the prediction of ore quantity, BP neural network has the characteristics of slow convergence and easy to fall into local minimum point. In order to obtain the global optimal solution, and to improve the defects of BP neural network, this paper proposes combination optimization algorithm of genetic algorithm (GA) and BP neural network to improve the speed and accuracy of forecasting the main design flow chart and the analysis of the sort distinguish algorithm are offered, and then some problem in the design and debugging of the algorithm are discussed. On this basis, the GA-BP neural network model is constructed and applied to optimize the initial weights and threshold value of BP neural network. This model choices the floating point coding method to encode the connection weights and thresholds, and divides subjects into several populations. Through the introduction of selection, mutation, crossover, initial weight and other operators, making operational synergies between the various groups. This study selects 30 geological units, 8 quantitative variables (Pb, Zn, Cu, Mo, Si, Ni, Co, V) and 12 qualitative variables to carry out empirical analysis. Then the simulation of the algorithm is carried out in MATLAB and the parameters are analysed. By normalizing the input samples, 22 groups of observation data are used as the training data for prediction, and the latter 8 groups of observation data are used as the test data to be verified. The results show that when the ore quantity characteristics are not very significant, the model will produce prediction bias. But the improvement of the algorithm increases the efficiency of the function approach capacity of BP neural network and conquer the BP neural network system’s instability. It provides an auxiliary guide for ore prediction, which have higher reference value.

Mine fire emergency planning requires simulation of the interaction of the fire and ventilation system and the subsequent distribution of products of combustion (POC). Several computer models were developed by the Bureau of Mines to perform this simulation. The most recent and advanced program, MFIRE performs normal ventilation network planning calculations, and dynamic transient state simulation of ventilation networks under a variety of conditions. MFIRE simulates a mine's ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters such as the development of new mine workings or changes in ventilation control structures, external influences such as varying outside temperatures, and internal influences such as fires. A major concern of mine fires is the heat- generated ventilation disturbances which can move POC through unexpected passageways. This Bureau paper describes recent in-mine experiments conducted at the Waldo Mine near Magdalena, NM to validate the temperature distribution and heat exchange with rock functions of MFIRE.

This paper describes a two-stage reverse flotation method developed at the Mineral Resources Institute (MRII, University of Alabama, for Kerr-McGee Corporation (KMC), to separate the trona (Na2CO3 ? NaHCO3 ? 2H2O) from a saline deposit containing halite, borax, minor salts, and water insoluble materials. In the first stage, trona is depressed with Quebracho, and the insoluble gangue is floated with fatty acid. In the second stage, trona is floated with cresylic acid. The flotation concentrates contained better than 90% trona with insolubles ranging between 1 and 2%. Although the trona recoveries were low, optimization and middlings recycled in a continuous circuit could substantially increase the value.

The Permanente plant of Kaiser Cement & Gypsum Corporation is located at a unique thick deposit of Calera Limestone (Figure 1) on the southwest side of San Francisco Bay. Limestone is rare in the eugeosynclinal Franciscan assemblage, constituting less than 0.1 percent of the total volume. On the northwest part of the San Francisco peninsula Calera Limestone is present as isolated masses from the type sect ion near Rockaway Beach southeastward for ten miles, where the belt is truncated by the San Andreas fault. The large Permanente deposit is sixteen miles south of the truncated belt, on the northeast side of the San Andreas fault. Scattered small exposures are known for about twenty miles southeasterly from Permanente. (1,2) Most deposits of Calera are thin; the type section is about two hundred feet thick. At Permanente, however, the normal limestone section contains at least four hundred feet of limestone; and, due to folding and extensive faulting, the total vertical thickness of the limestone section is over 1400 feet. The unusual thickness of limestone is due to low angle thrust faulting. This fortuitous structure formed a deposit of limestone that supplies an 8,500,000 barrel cement plant in a major metropolitan market.

Grinding balls, simple in shape, are actually sophisticated machine components, and essential elements of mineral grinding mills. Their physical properties and quality must be adequate to achieve design life and grinding mission with few failures. Consistant properties and freedom from breakage are essential. Size, mass, hardness profile, chemistry, and microstructure are important variables which should be designed, specified, controlled, and verified to achieve optimal mill performance. Failure to specify ball properties in detail or failure to obtain required ball properties and quality can cause milling productivity losses and excessive costs that could endanger a milling operations survival in the competive mineral industry.

"INTRODUCTION A packaged cooling system is being developed for refuge alternatives (RAs) that meets MSHA qualification guidelines for deployment in coal mines. This system will allow full occupancy ratings of deployed Refuge Alternatives (RAs) to be maintained by keeping the apparent temperature inside the RA from exceeding 95°F. Research investigations sponsored by NIOSH have shown that heat buildup caused by occupants in mobile RAs will result in apparent temperatures that exceed the 95°F limit established in 30 CFR 7.504. Figure 1 shows the temperature rise in an inflatable RA having an occupancy rating of 23 people at an 81°F mine air temperature. This plot shows the need for either heat mitigation or occupancy derating in warmer mines. The RAECS will be designed to provide enough heat mitigation to eliminate occupancy derating due to heat buildup over the 96 hour refuge period.This paper describes testing of a prototype cooling system that uses proven vapor compression technology powered by batteries to keep the RA interior below the 95° limit for a minimum of 96 hours. Testing of this prototype cooling system was conducted in December of 2015 and January of 2016 at the NIOSH test mine in Bruceton, PA. December testing was conducted at the prevailing mine ambient temperature – approximately 60°F. The January testing was done with the mine ambient temperature in the immediate vicinity of the RA artificially elevated to 85°F. Realistic heat gain from RA occupants was provided by human simulators developed by NIOSH. These simulators add sensible heat corresponding to human metabolic processes and latent heat generated by respiration and perspiration. Heat generated by CO2 scrubbers was also added. Results of cooling system performance using these simulated loads at the two ambient conditions are described. A comparison of the apparent temperature in the RA using two different control techniques is also presented. This work documents the ability of the cooling system to meet the established apparent temperature limit at the full occupancy rating of a six person RA. A new cooling system intended for use with existing RA deployments and having greater cooling capacity is currently in development and will be described."

The Copper Range Company's mining properties are located in the Upper Penisula of Michigan. (Fig.). Early work indicated the presence of copper ore in a bedded deposit, confined to the base of the Upper Keweenawan Nonesuch shale, and exploitation of this deposit on a portion of the Company's property was undertaken by White Pine Copper Company. Diamond drilling of the White Pine orebody indicated that a major fault pattern terminated the values to the South-west. Further drilling Southwest of the fault zone proved a downward displacement of the ore bearing horizon some 1,500 feet and a lateral displacement of approximately 4,000 feet; and in this area an ore deposit was outlined in a large asymmetrical syncline locally plunging to the South-west. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Shrinkage or shrinkage stoping refers to any mining method in which broken ore is temporarily retained in the stope to provide a working platform and/or to offer temporary support to the stope walls during active mining. Since ore "swells" when broken, it is necessary to shrink the muck pile a corresponding amount by draw¬ing some of the broken ore out as the stope is advanced-hence the name. Broken ore retained during stoping is drawn out after the stope has reached its limits. The stope may be left empty or may be filled with waste contemporaneous with, or subsequent to, the final draw. Traditionally the method implies conventional overhand stoping methods with miners working between the muck pile and the stope back, in a space which advances updip with mining and is maintained by balanc¬ing "swell" with "shrink." The shrinkage classification is also applicable to so-called "semishrinkage" methods in open pillar-supported stopes where broken ore is temporarily retained as a working platform but offers no wall support; and to various blasthole shrinkage methods which utilize broken ore temporarily retained in the stope for wall support, but which do not require miners to work from muck pile in the stope. The method is generally applied to steeply dipping veins of strong ore between strong walls. APPLICATION Geometry The geometry of a shrinkable vein is described in terms of dip, width, and regularity along dip. Overall strike and dip dimensions and irregularities along the strike generally impose no restrictions on the method. Dip is ideally 1.2 to 1.5 rad (70 to 90°). As dip falls below 1.2 rad (70°), the shrinkage draw begins to strongly favor the hanging wall side, thus leaving a poor working platform for conventional overhand work. This is particularly true in relatively wide stopes. The sup¬port afforded to the hanging wall also diminishes with decreasing dip, reaching nil as the dip approaches the repose angle of broken ore. Dips below 0.78 to 0.87 rad (45 to 50°) are not generally shrinkable except by open stope "seinishrinkage" methods. Minimum mining width is fixed by working space requirements in the stope-generally about 1 m. Shrink¬age in narrower veins requires that waste rock from one or both walls be broken with the ore and the attendant dilution accepted to achieve the minimum width. Nar¬row stopes are less suitable, encouraging hang-ups and bridging of broken ore, with the attendant problems of erratic draw and incomplete recovery of broken ore. Maximum practical width may be 3 m or less to over 30 m, depending upon the competency of the ore and its ability to stand unsupported across the stope back. This is a vital safety consideration in conventional over¬hand stopes, but is much less of a factor in blasthole shrinkage methods. Very wide veins and massive ore bodies have been mined by transverse vertical shrinkage panels separated by transverse vertical pillars which are either abandoned or recovered later by other methods. Regularity along the dip is a prerequisite of shrink¬age as there must be no serious obstruction to the flow of broken ore downward through the stope to the sill level. Gentle rolls along the dip are acceptable if the local footwall dip everywhere exceeds 0.78 to 0.87 rad (45 to 50°). Off-dip hanging wall and/or footwall splits can generally be mined selectively from a conventional shrink stope as they are encountered without ad¬versely affecting subsequent continuation of shrinkage mining updip on the main vein. Vertical offsets or major rolls along the dip which cannot be "smoothed over" generally require that a sublevel be established with new draw control development. Blasthole shrinkage methods are much less flexible (and thus less selective) in their ability to accommodate any of these irregularities. Ground Conditions The wall rock must be strong enough to stand with the minimal support afforded by the dynamic mass of broken ore in the stope. During active mining, local sloughing from the walls is restrained, but the broken ore affords little, if any, useful resistance to closure of the stope walls. Such squeezing, if present, may bind up the stope and cause the loss of much ore. Pillars left between and/or within stopes are effective in preventing closure but reduce overall recovery. Walls may be re¬inforced by bolting after each stope cut in conventional shrinkage but not in blasthole shrinkage. Ore in place must be strong enough to stand with no natural support across the stope width, although tem¬porary artificial support or reinforcement may be used locally in conventional stopes. Some spalling or sloughing is permissible in blasthole shrinkage as men are never present in the stope. Physical and/or mineralogical characteristics of the broken ore may impose restrictions on stope design and/or operational plan¬ning, and may even preclude the use of shrinkage al¬together. Examples include: ores which, when broken, are cohesive or which tend to pack or cement together under the influence of ground water, wall pressure, and/ or chemical reaction. Such conditions precipitate er¬ratic draw during mining and often result in difficult and/or incomplete final draw; pyritic ores which oxidize very rapidly in the stopes and may generate heat, imposing a fire hazard by spontaneous combustion; sulfide ores which oxidize sufficiently in the stopes to adversely affect mill recovery by flotation; and ores (es¬pecially those containing uranium minerals) which ex¬ude radon gas and thereby impose ventilation constraints on stope design. In most cases these problems can be minimized by limiting the size of stopes, by minimizing the duration of mining activity in each stope, and by promptly drawing each stope empty following comple¬tion of mining.

"Coal mine ranks No.1 among the 6 major high-risk industries, so it is no doubt that the senior managers in the coal mine bear more stress than other industry executives. The massive working stress results in serious influences on the physical and mental health of the senior managers of coal mine, which might also induce the safety risk in the coal mine. Therefore, to evaluate the senior managers’ working stress and put forward strategies of mitigating the stress is of great theoretical and practical significance in improving the physical and mental health of the senior managers and reducing the safety risk in the coal mine. The research on the working stress has been made in the western countries for almost 50 years, China began the research in the mid and late 1990s, the research is spread across multiple industries including education, medical treatment, computer and aviation. However, there is little research on the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine, so the available literatures are few. In the paper, we, based on the working stress model of Robbins and through questionnaire survey, analyze the element composition of the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine; then, we construct the evaluation indicator system of the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine based on the individual factor, organization factor and environment factor; after that, we determine weights of each evaluation indicators by using the improved triangular fuzzy number weight method, and set up the evaluation model of the senior managers’ working stress of the coal mine on the basis of the fuzzy comprehensive assessment method. At last, in accordance with the model, we evaluate and analyze the working stress for the senior managers of some typical coal mines, and diagnoses the major sources and intensities of the senior managers’ working stress, and then propose corresponding strategies of mitigating the stress."

The major cost in comminution is energy consumption, which can be as high as 50% of the operating cost. Improvements in plant operations have resulted in up to a 15% reduction in energy usage (kw-hr/t). These improvements have been made through the optimization of grinding efficiency and the use of expert model-based control systems. Optimization involves the determination of the levels of the critical-operating conditions that result in the most efficient breakage of ore in the mill. These optimal levels are identified through plant/laboratory test work and through computer simulation using advanced process models. Model-based expert control achieves the maximum performance from the grinding circuit by identifying the characteristics of the ore in the mill with an optimal on-line estimator. Using this information, the control system dynamically determines the operating point that will yield the optimal performance. Two industrial applications of grinding-circuit optimization and model-based control are presented to demonstrate the power of this new technology.

Paste is a high density mixture of water and fine solid particles with a relatively low water content (10-25%) such that the mixture has a consistency as measured by the ASTM slump cone test from slightly greater than zero up to nearly 12 inches (305mm). Particles of different size classes will not segregate or settle when the paste is not being agitated or when it is stationary in a pipeline. Cement may be a component of paste. Larger particles of aggregate can generally be added to a paste without greatly changing the pipeline transport characteristics. A paste may bleed water slightly when it is allowed to be motionless for periods of up to several hours, but the solids do not become so dense that the paste cannot be easily re-fluidized. The dividing line between the definition of a high density slurry and a paste is not sharp. It is a practical matter that must be considered when designing a pipeline transportation system. If the pipeline is very short, there is very little risk of plugging the pipeline with a high density slurry when flow is stopped for short time periods. With longer pipelines the mixture must remain stable without motion for periods as long as several hours to avoid pipeline plugging. The fine particles in a paste mixture can be composed of mine tailings or naturally-occurring clays, silts and fine sands. The mineralogy of the particles thus can have a wide variety from quartz and feldspar to clays, micas and even salts.

Air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) flotation is a new, promising technology, and, since its conception, numerous applications have been successfully tested. Nevertheless, research and development efforts have continued to improve the technology with respect to operating conditions and design considerations. Results, from experimental studies on bubble generation in the ASH system are presented in this paper. Bubble size distributions generated during ASH operation were determined using a high-speed photographic technique. The influence of many factors, including surfactant concentration, water flow rate, and porous-tube pore size have been studied. Test results indicate that these process variables have a profound effect on the bubble size distribution. With an increase in surfactant concentration or water flow rate (shear field), the bubble size distributions become narrower and shift toward smaller average bubble diameters. However, the influence of pore size is more complicated. Depending on the experimental conditions, the average bubble size was found to range from about 100 to 300 µm in diameter.

This article presents results from a comparative case study focusing on newspaper coverage of mineral exploration and mining in three European countries representing different geological and socioeconomic contexts. The results show that regional newspapers in Finland, Germany and Spain report about mining issues relatively intensively even in the absence of major accidents or other media events causing peaks of attention. The tone of the articles is generally neutral to positive toward mining activities. Common themes include mining revival, mining events and social interaction, history of mining, and damages related to mining. Past, present and future employment opportunities related directly or indirectly to the mining sector are key storylines. Contrary to some expectations, the regional-level debate was not dominated by a long-lasting confrontation between the mining industry and its adversaries spearheaded by environmental nongovernmental organizations.

Introduction The Vernal Phosphate Operation is located in northeastern Utah, about 18 km (11 miles) north of Vernal, about 280 km (175 miles) east of Salt Lake City, UT. The plant began initial operations in 1961 under the name of the San Francisco Chemical Co. In 1981, Chevron purchased the operation from Stauffer Chemical Co. In 1982, plant capacity was doubled to about 72.6 kt/a (800,000 stpy) of phosphate concentrate. From 1984 to May 1986, another expansion increased the capacity to 1.2 Mt/a (1.3 million stpy) of concentrate. It also incorporated a number of equipment and process changes designed to increase the overall plant phosphate recovery. A 150-km (94-mile) slurry pipeline, the world's longest phosphate pipeline, was also constructed from the Vernal plant to a new Chevron Chemical and Fertilizer plant near Rock Springs, WY. Over the past five years, plant expansions and the pipeline construction have been accomplished without missing a single concentrate shipment.

Introduction The Afton property is located 290 km (180 miles) by air east-northeast from Vancouver and 14 km (8.7 miles) west of Kamloops, a city of 60,000 people, in south central British Columbia, Canada. The mine is adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway at an elevation of 670 m (2198 ft) above sea level. The ore body is a porphyry copper deposit that has undergone supergene alteration. The major economic minerals in the supergene zone are native copper and chalcocite with chalcopyrite and bornite in the hypergene areas. The grade is 1% with an overall copper distribution - 70% native, 25% chalcocite, and 5% chalcopyrite with bornite and covellite. The ore also contains important but variable amounts of gold and silver. The mill was designed to treat 6350 t/d (7000 stpd). Semiautogenous grinding was selected to minimize capital cost and because of the expected high clay content of the ore, which would have caused problems in a conventional crushing and screening plant. Test work indicated that a recovery of 87% was possible in a circuit incorporating both flotation and gravity separation. Flowsheet Run-of-mine ore is crushed in a 1.06 x 1.65-m (3.5 x 5.4-ft) Allis Chalmers gyratory crusher set at 228.6 mm (9 in.), closed side setting. The surge pocket, below the crusher, is emptied by a Hydrastroke feeder onto number one conveyor, which discharges onto a 180,000-t (198,416-st) coarse ore stockpile. Six Hydrastroke feeders on two conveyors withdraw the crushed material from the bottom of the pile. These two conveyors, in turn, discharge onto the belt feeding the semiautogenous mill. The live storage in the stockpile is approximately 22,000 t (24,250 st), sufficient for three days' mill feed. Primary grinding is accomplished in an 8.5-m (28-ft) diam by 3.7-m (12-ft) long Koppers (Hardinge Cascade) mill (Fig. 1) containing a 10% ball charge and driven by a 4000-kW dc variable speed motor. The mill dis¬charge is pumped by a 10 x 12 G.I.W. pump to a 1.22 x 4.88-m (4 x 16-ft) stationary screen sloped at 20°. Screen oversize returns to the semiautogenous mill (SAM), and the undersize flows by gravity to the ball mill discharge pump box. Secondary grinding is performed in a 5-m (16.4-ft) diam by 8.84-m (29-ft) Koppers overflow ball mill driven by a 3430-kW synchronous motor through an air clutch. The mill is in closed circuit with a Krebs Cyclopac containing 10 635-mm (25-in.) cyclones and the cyclone overflow, at 35% solids and 65% to 70% -200 mesh, is flotation feed. In order to limit the buildup of native copper, circulating in the secondary grinding circuit, a portion of the underflow from the cyclones is processed in a circuit containing screens, cyclones, and shaking tables to produce a finished metallic copper concentrate. Primary mill variable speed drive The overall waste to ore ratio at Afton was 4.5:1. The mining was to be done with only three shovels, which meant that it was highly unlikely that more than one of them would be in ore at any one time. The resulting inability to blend the mill feed made it impossible to prevent wide swings in the grade and grindability. The variable speed do drive motor installed on the semiautogenous mill was selected because of the extreme variability of the Afton ore body. This variability has persisted throughout the lifetime of the mine. There are times, however, when due to ore conditions, the mill is operated at full speed (78% of critical) for extended periods of several shifts duration. There are other times when the mill speed may be changed several times in a 12-hour shift due to changing ore conditions. When ore is processed that contains a fairly large proportion of fine native copper, the primary mill speed and, consequently, the tonnage may be reduced to improve the secondary grind and to maintain an acceptable grind and recovery. High clay ores require less mill speed and more dilute grinding densities. In the latter case, the slower primary mill speed also helps to minimize damage to the mill liners. Approximately 57% of the time the mill operates between 90% and 100% of full speed or between 71% and 78% of critical. The variable speed is also used for inching during mill relines.

WIMPFEN The measure of the success of any mining operation is the size of the difference between sales realization and cost of product, including operating, sales, administra¬tive, capital and others. Evaluation of a mining project necessitates projecting costs and sales realization as accurately as possible. Possible variations in specific cost elements and sales prices must be considered. To accomplish this, project studies should include giving effect to possible fluctuations to determine the break¬even points with varying costs and prices. Development of cost data is never an easy task. Mining is characterized by a great variety of conditions which result in still more variables. Achieving realistic figures as of any specific time involves consideration of changes, which may be frequent, in labor-contract terms and equipment used, variations in working condi¬tions and mining practices, and changes in mineralization and metallurgy. The purchasing power of the dollar, which has been declining persistently, also affects the situation at any given time. The only thing that can be said of costs, with certainty, is that they will change. With this in mind, the "guideline" data in this section are offered for the use of the mining engineer. It was provided for the most part by representative companies, whose contributions are gratefully acknowledged. In reviewing the tabu¬lations and other material it is of course necessary to remember that the data presented are valid only for the time periods specified, and will change with changing economic conditions in any other. 31.1-CAPITAL COST OF PLANTS Plant capital costs are set forth in Tables 31-6 and 31-7 by year of construction. To estimate capital cost of plants built in future years, various cost bases and indexes are utilized. My charge is to review briefly "Coal In The Electric Utility Industry - Present and Future." Thus, I will not dwell on the overall energy picture, other than to express what most others involved in the energy picture know - we're in trouble! Several years ago, speaking to another engineering society, I said, "Much has been and yet will be said and written about the energy situation in our Country." What an understatement! The energy question has reached crisis proportions and is a top priority item at the highest level of government, Unfortunately, it will be in that situation for some time to come. Many factors created this complex problem, and we all share some of the blame. But I am perplexed when I read in the popular press that environmental factors are unrelated to the energy crisis when I know this to be untrue. In the recent past all forms of energy have been cast in the role of villain, particularly coal with its problems of surface mining, mine safety, acid water drainage, sulfur content, and a multitude of other adverse factors relating to the environment in one way or another. As you know, the sulfur situation has led to the closing of numerous mines, resulting in the lessening of our mining capacity. Today, along the Eastern Seaboard, 60 to 70 million tons of coal are displaced by imported oil, primarily to meet air standards. Even in the Midwest, utilities sitting on enormous coal reserves are converting to other fuels or hauling low sulfur coal thousands of miles from the western Mountain States. [We will hear more about this coal from another speaker on the program this morning.]

Gold was first discovered in the central region of French Guiana in the mid 1860's. Production was based strictly from placer mining of the various rivers in the region. At the moment, a number of companies are actively engaged in hard rock gold exploration, concentrated in the northern and central regions of the country. The Franc-Or/BRGM joint venture in the Sophie-Repentir region of Central French Guiana offers an exceptional opportu­nity for the discovery of one or more million-plus ounce deposits of gold owing to a highly favorable structural setting in Precam­brian greenstones that host several known vein gold occurrences, some of which appear to occur near the border of a potassic granitoid intrusion. At this point in time, based mostly on predecessors' work, mineable reserves could be estimated to be in the 500,000 ounces range over the length of the property. The exploration campaign under way has the objective to delineate probable reserves of at least 2 million ounces that could be mined by open pit mining methods in the area. The program should be completed in the next 18-24 months. In order to efficiently and effectively evaluate this very large property area, all of the necessary camp, mechanical and drilling equipment has been purchased and is being transported to the property. Most of that equipment was purchased in Canada. The first drill target is the Repentir sector because of its access and the amount of detailed work that has been done by BRGM on that concession, but geological evidence suggests that many areas on the property could offer even more potential.
