Detailed underground geologic map- ping at a scale of 1:1200 has been carried out at the Crown II Mine of Freeman United Coal Mining Company, which operates in the Herrin (No. 6) Coal Member. The roof sequence, upward from the coal, includes (1) soft, medium- to dark-gray shale; (2) hard, black, fissile shale; (3) argillaceous nodular-bedded limestone, and (4) fine-grained, shaly, water-bearing sandstone. The first unit is highly lenticular, and any or all may be missing at a given locality. The sand- stone has a sheet facies and a channel facies. The Herrin Coal is eroded in channels near the Crown II Mine. Structural features mapped at Crown II include normal and strike-slip faults of small displacement, "slips" and clay dikes, and limestone "bosses." Less stable roof and wet con- ditions are encountered where the limestone is thin or missing or where it is broken by natural fractures or by artificial openings that inter- sect the water-bearing strata above the limestone. Geologic mapping of the underground workings has allowed us to predict faults, fracture zones, and channels ahead of the face for this mine. Some lithologic and structural patterns apparently are random and cannot now be projected. Conventional exploratory drilling is entirely inadequate to map faults or lithology of the roof, but it does indicate the range of lithologic variability, which can be used to project needs for roof sup- ports. Drilling also is useful In locating channels and in mapping regional variation in thickness and facies of the sandstone.

Introduction In the design and specification of a ventilation system for an underground mine, it is necessary to make reasonably accurate estimates of the pressure losses in the various airways of the mine. These estimates can be made with little difficulty for open airways with simple geometric cross-sections, such as those cut by continuous miners or tunnel-boring machines. The situation is much different on a longwall face, where the airway's complex geometric cross section and the presence in the airway of obstructing equipment having a variety of shapes make it difficult, if not impossible, to estimate pressure loss using traditional methods of calculation. Head losses in mine entries are calculated using Atkinson's Equation. [22H= KPLQ (English) H= KP 3Q (SO (1) 5.2AA] where H = pressure loss, in. of H2O (Pa); K = friction factor, lbf•min2/ft4 (kg/m3); P = perimeter, ft (m); L = airway length, ft (m); Q = airflow quantity, ft3/min (m3/sec); and A = flow cross-sectional area, ft2 (m2) In this equation, the friction factor, K, is an empirical constant that describes the aerodynamic roughness of the airway. Typically, the K-factor for a given airway is determined by measuring the factors H, P, L, Q and A in Equation (1) and calculating K. Tables of friction factors calculated in this way are found in textbooks and handbooks that deal with mine ventilation analysis. Unfortunately, very few K-factors have been measured on longwall faces, and the accuracies of those that have been measured are entirely site specific, because of the wide variety of equipment found on longwalls. The development of a technique for prediction without mine-site measurements of the friction factor for any longwall face, regardless of its configuration, will thus be very useful in the design of ventilation systems for mines in which longwall mining is practiced. Calculation of pressure losses using Atkinson's Equation (1) and empirically determined K-factors provides accurate and useful approximations in cases where the airways have relatively simple cross sections. However, a careful analysis using the principles of fluid mechanics shows that such calculations are based on two assumptions that are not strictly correct when there are obstructions in the airway. The first assumption is that the air velocity distribution in the cross section, particularly around the perimeter, is uniform. This assumption results from the fact that the tabulated K-factor values found in the literature are based on field measurements with uniform conditions. Such uniformity does not exist in longwall airflows. The second common assumption is that the K-factor, and corresponding head loss, is independent of the Reynolds Number (NR) for a given flow. In fact, this assumption is not strictly correct, and is particularly erroneous in the case of irregular protuberances into the airflow, such as those found on a longwall face. The errors arising from the assumptions may be avoided by using K-factors calculated by a newly devised method, described below, which takes into account the fundamental principles of aerodynamic drag analysis. This new technique has two advantages: first, it is flexible enough to model any longwall, regardless of equipment configuration; second, it employs terminology and equations familiar to those who perform mine ventilation analysis, using K-factors, for which ventilation engineers have an intuitive understanding, rather than drag coefficients. To provide guidance for development of a longwall drag model, data were taken on two modern longwalls operating in substantially different conditions. Pressure measurements at Mine B were made with 200-foot (61-m) sections of 1/8-in. (3-mm) diameter plastic tubing, attached to a Dwyer Magnehelic gauge. Pressure drops were measured in 200-foot increments down the face, and summed to give the drop for the entire face length. This technique was found to produce small, repeated errors because of the number of segments required to span the longwall. At Mine A this problem was avoided by using a single, continuous, plastic tube for the entire face length. The psychrometric properties of the air were measured for both Mines A and B. A calibrated, standard vane-anemometer was used to measure the airflow on both faces. Finally, numerous dimensions were measured on both faces, and face profile drawings were obtained to allow detailed evaluation of the face equipment geometry. From this information, accurate evaluations of the average wetted perimeter and average area of the longwall face airways were made. INTRODUCTION The measurement of the total activity of radon daughters in the air of mines has become a routine procedure in order to control the radiation exposure in miners due to the inhalation of these radionuclides. Normally the measured concentration is given in terms of total potential L-energy of the short lived radon daughters. The unit most frequently used is 1 WL (working level), which is defined as the potential a-energy of 1.3.105 MeV per 1 of air. The a-dose to the respiratory tract is, however, not proportional to the inhaled potential a-energy. In addition, the degree of equilibrium between the daughter products in air and the fraction of daughter products not attached to aerosol particles (the unattached fraction) must be known. Theoretical calculations of the equilibrium between daughters and the unattached fraction have been presented by different authors (Jacobi, 1972; Porstendörfer et al, 1978). Such calculations must take into account the plateout of daughters on surfaces, the attachment of daughters to aerosols and removal of daughters by the ventilation. The situation in mines will however be very complex and no single model will cover all situations. In most cases the radon and radon daughter concentrations will be described by a combination of different models. Domanski (1979) used the experimental results of Breslin et al. (1969) from uranium mines to relate the equilibrium between the individual daughters to the equilibrium factor, F. Once the equilibrium factor is known, this seems to be a useful approach to assess the individual daughter concentrations. The concentrations of radon and daughter products may vary considerably during the day. Seasonal variations are also frequently found. It is therefore important to have knowledge of the magnitude of these variations and of the factors having the strongest influence upon the concentrations. The unattached fraction of radon daughters in uranium mines was investigated by George and Hinchliffe (1972) and Raghavayya and Jones (1974). Mercer (1975) later modified the results of Raghavayya and Jones. Both these investigations indicated that the aerosol particle concentrations was the main influencing factor upon the unattached fraction. In this paper we will summarize the main results of a study on the radiological characterics of nonuranium mines. We will also discuss the correlations between the unattached fraction of the potential a-energy and the unattached fraction of the individual daughters, and between the equilibrium factor F, and the individual daughter ratios. More detailed discussions of this study will be published elsewhere (Stranden and Berteig, 1981 and Stranden and Berteig 1981 a). MATERIAL AND METHODS During 4 two-weeks periods corresponding to the seasons in the Norwegian mine where the highest radon daughter concentrations occure, the parameters listed in table 1 were studied. RESULTS Correlation between equilibrium factor and individual daughter ratios. The mean value of the equilibrium factor in all Norwegian mines measured during the last ten years was 0.46 with a minimum of 0.08 and maximum of 0.93 (Stranden and Berteig, 1981). The correlations between the equilibrium factor F, and the individual radon daughter/radon ratios were studied and the results indicated high correlations. In table 2, these correlation formulae are listed together with the correlation coefficients. The US Bureau of Mines studied the mechanism of shear flocculation of silica with stearic acid. At pH 6 and 12, shear flocculation of silica was not observed with the addition of up to 4.5 x 10-4 M (5 lb/st) stearic acid. However, in the presence of 0.1 M NaCl at pH 6, shear-flocculation was observed at stearic acid concentrations = 10-4 M (22.5 lb/st). Adsorption of stearic acid on silica was studied using stearic acids spin-labeled with a doxyl group. The presence of the spin-labeling group did not greatly affect the shear flocculation properties of stearic acid. Adsorption of labeled stearic acid on silica was measured as a function of surfactant concentration with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography (GC). The GC results indicated that the stearic acid was predominately adsorbed on the surface at concentrations above 10-4 M. From the EPR spectra, the formation of aggregates of stearic acid was apparent at concentrations of approximately 10-5 M (22.5 lb/st). The results are discussed in terms of a possible mechanism for shear flocculation.

Introduction The Carlin Trend is North America's premier gold producing district. It is located in northeastern Nevada's Elko and Eureka Counties along a northwest trending belt about 65 km (40 miles) long and 8 km (5 miles) wide (Thorstad, 1989; Jones, 1989). This trend is the worldwide reference site for epithermal, sedimentary rock-hosted microscopic gold deposits. At least 19 deposits have been discovered to date, varying in size from 933 kg to 1.08 kt (30,000 to 35 million contained oz) of gold (Fig. 1). Newmont Gold Co. and its parent, Newmont Mining Corp., jointly constitute the largest mineral right holders in the district. They own or control more than 1000 km' (386 sq miles) in and around the Carlin Trend and own all or part of I6out of the 19 mines and prospects identified to date. Since the initiation of Newmont's exploration activities in the Carlin Trend in 1961, 2.24 kt (72 million oz) of cumulative gold resources have been identified. Cumulative production from all mines since the start-up of Newmont's Carlin mine in 1965 to the end of 1989 was about 202 t (6.5 million oz) (Jones, 1989). The incentive of sustained high gold prices and innovation in processing technology resulted in a significant acceleration of gold output over the last few years. Newmont Gold alone produced more than 43.5 t (1.4 million oz) in 1989. That is equal to 22% of the cumulative 1965 to 1988 output, and an almost 200% increase over its 1986 output. The same incentives produced even more spectacular exploration results. In each of the last five years, net additions to reserves and resources outpaced current production by substantial margins. These facts demonstrate the spectacular past prospectiveness of the Carlin Trend and the success of focused, multi-disciplinary exploration methods that made it possible to more than offset the recent accelerated depletion of gold resources. However, is this situation sustainable? How long can the mining companies along the Carlin Trend keep on finding resources faster than they deplete them? These are some of the questions that motivated this study. The authors have not quantified the future potential for gold exploration in the Carlin Trend nor established a deposit discovery path. But strong indications were discovered that the [ ] Carlin Trend remains a relatively immature exploration district and that the potential for significant new discoveries is high. Methodology and data The approach chosen to address the above questions was simple. The authors compiled deposit size data, measured in contained ounces of gold resources, for all known deposits along the Carlin Trend (Table 1). The resource information was obtained by adding cumulative historical production (adjusted for mining losses and metallurgical recovery) to 1989 year-end published resource inventories. In a mature exploration area, where most deposits have been discovered, this distribution would be expected to approximate lognormality and would plot along a straight line on a lognormal probability scale. This result was found in previous work by Allais (1957) and recently confirmed by Cox and Singer (USGS, 1986) in regard to various types of mineral deposits in several regions of the world. It was also found to hold true for oil and gas pool size distributions (Arps and Roberts, 1958; Kaufman, 1962; McCrossan, 1969). [ ] The data used were compiled by Newmont Exploration geologists. The purpose of the study is to make inferences about the underlying geologic processes in the district and the maturity of the exploration effort. Therefore, deposits were not classified according to ownership but according to geologic occurrence as known from current information. Newmont's Post and Barrick's Goldstrike and Betze deposits, for example, are shown as a single occurrence to reflect the actual geologic setting. The cumulative frequency distribution of deposit sizes was plotted on lognormal probability paper (Fig. 2). The abscissa shows the cumulative fraction of deposits at or below a certain deposit size and the ordinate shows the deposit size in thousands of ounces of contained gold resources.

This paper reviews earlier in-plant testing at the Sidbec-Normines pelletizing plant at Port Cartier, Quebec, Canada. It describes the result of the more prolonged use of coke breeze during recent months and in addition, the effects of varying dolomite and coke additives upon the metallurgical properties of the pellet production have been studied. Mention is also made of some brief test work carried out to use peat moss as a carbonaceous additive to the pelletizing process and in particular the plans for future work in this respect. Earlier laboratory pot-grate test work had indicated that a production rate increase of between fifteen and twenty percent was a practical possibility, or alternatively that the plant could be run at design rating with significantly lower energy consumption. These energy reductions were of the order of ten to fifteen percent for fuel and main process fan power respectively. The physical and metallurgical pellet properties for both blast furnace and direct reduction furnace use were little affected by the production rate increases, and were actually somewhat improved when practicing maximum energy conservations. Pellet properties could be further improved by not extracting the maximum energy economy. Two phases of carefully controlled in-plant testing were run to assess the effect of energy conservation under plant conditions. These two phases of testing confirmed that an overall fuel saving of approximately fifteen percent could be realized, with a reduction in the Bunker C oil consumption of about forty-five percent, and a reduction in main process fan power of approximately ten to fifteen percent. The present scope of work is aimed at establishing the use of varying levels of coke addition up to about one percent under normal plant operating conditions.

Introduction Deep open-pit mines invariably affect the local and regional hydrologic systems. Pit dewatering, occurring during mining operations, puts an obvious hydrologic stress on these hydrologic systems. However, post-mining hydrologic impacts resulting from the pit refilling with groundwater following the cessation of mining activity can also be significant. The prediction of the rate at which the post-mining pit will fill with groundwater is a critical aspect of assessing the long-term hydrologic impacts. Numerical groundwater flow modeling provides a method for predicting the groundwater refilling rate of the pit. The rate at which pit "lakes" fill depends on several factors: •the rate and duration of pit dewatering; •the depth and size of the ultimate pit and •the pre-mining hydrologic regime. These factors can be incorporated into a detailed numerical groundwater flow model that can then be used to assess the effects of dewatering and post-mining recovery on the local and regional hydrologic systems. A sufficiently detailed, numerical groundwater model provides the oportunity to: •account for complex geology near the pit; •assess the impact of active pit dewatering and •predict the long-term impacts of post-mining groundwater flow into the pit. A detailed groundwater model incorporating these items has been developed and applied at an operating open-pit mine. Developed by Durbin and O'Brien (1987), the three-dimensional, finite-element, groundwater flow model was used to represent the hydrologic system of an approximately 253-km2 (98-sq mile) area surrounding the pit. Historical groundwater elevation data, stream flows and meteorologic, geologic and geophysical data were used to establish the dimensions and initial conditions for the model. Steady-state conditions, representing the pre-mining local and regional hydrologic systems, were simulated using the initial conditions incorporated into the groundwater model. The groundwater model was then utilized to simulate various dewatering programs, to predict the filling rate and the groundwater depth in the ultimate pit once mining activities are complete and to assess the long-term impacts on the regional groundwater flow system. Development of pit lake model Groundwater modeling efforts were completed in two phases. The first focused on pit dewatering activities, while the second phase concentrated on the post-mining effects on the hydrologic system. The final estimates of groundwater elevations calculated during the pit dewatering simulations were used in predicting the post-mining recovery of the hydrologic system. The groundwater model was also modified prior to the second phase to account for the volume of rock removed during mining activities. To account for the actual volume of rock mined, the geometry of the post-dewatering model grid was modified to approximate the final pit geometry. The depth and width of the ultimate pit were divided into eight idealized stages that represented significant changes in the bench geometries. These eight stages were then introduced sequentially into the model according to the predicted water elevations within the pit. In this way, changes in the volume and depth of water within the pit were accounted for through time. Once the ultimate pit geometry was accounted for in the model, it was necessary to assign new hydraulic characteristics to those parts of the model grid (elements) that represented excavated rock. The solution of the numerical model requires that finite hydraulic conductivity values be assigned to the portion of the groundwater model that represents excavated rock. Therefore, the calculated groundwater elevations differ, somewhat, between the edges and the center of the open pit. These model-calculated water elevations at the edge and in the middle of the open pit represent the elevation of water that would occur in the pit lake. To minimize the error in the estimated level of water within the pit lake, the hydraulic conductivity was increased to a value that would: •minimize the predicted difference between the groundwater elevations across the open pit and •produce a numerically stable solution. Specific storage is the hydrologic parameter that accounts for the water produced by compaction of the aquifer matrix. To predict the groundwater volume that would flow into the ultimate pit, this parameter was assigned a value equivalent to the compressibility of water. This value of specific storage reflects the post-mining groundwater storage occurring as an open body of water. Additionally, a specific yield of 1.0 was assigned to the pit elements to represent the 100% porosity of the open pit. In

The genetic characteristics of members of the genus Acidiphilium are poorly understood. As part of our study of the genetics of these bacteria, a search was made for an endogenous bacteriophage. Such a bacteriophage has been discovered. Several properties of the phage have been investigated. The phage has a lambdoid morphology and is somewhat larger than lambda. A variety of factors which affect phage stability have been investigated. The bacteriophage infects several of the strains that have been tested. Study of this bacteriophage should greatly increase our understanding of genetic mechanisms in Acidiphilium.

Primary normal long-chain amines are insoluble in saturated brine. Their colloidal solubility (dispersion) in concentrated electrolyte solutions is strongly affected by the presence of surfactants (frothers). This paper shows that a better usage of alcohol type surfactants, which are commonly used in potash ore flotation as frothers, can significantly improve the flotation of both coarse and fine sylvite particles. A new process of potash ore flotation is developed, which includes premixing an effective frother with an aqueous solution of amine or emulsion of extender oil containing amine. With such a combination of flotation reagents, KC1 particles up to 5 mm in size float very well in the short flotation column, and particles up to 2 mm float in a mechanical cell; when used to treat fine fraction-containing sample, this method may as well provide an improved concentrate grade.

Experimental results obtained from large scale (7 tons), long-term (500 days) leaching of low tenor copper sulfide ores were interpreted by a geometric model involving the movement of a reaction zone through the ore fragments. The postulated leaching mechanism involved mixed kinetics and included diffusion of the reacting species through the host rock and a chemical reaction at the surface of the mineral particles. Ore properties which were considered were ore particle size and shape, grade of ore, and mineral content. Excellent agreement between the mixed kinetic model and the laboratory leaching results was obtained when minus ½ inch ore particles were not included in the leach. Also, a satisfactory prediction of copper recovery from plus ½ inch ore with a different particle size distribution was made; however, it was necessary to modify the shape factor in the model. Predictions of copper recovery from an ore sample which included the minus ½ -inch fine fraction and leaching for 460 days was 56.5 percent, and the recovery from leaching was 47.0 percent. The presence of fines caused channeling and uneven solution distribution and inhibited the leaching rate.

This is especially true with mineral pigments because of the variety, in slurry operations required for their processing. Such operations include any of the following: (1) mine-transport (2) wet grinding (3) flotation/beneficiation (4) wet magnetic separation (5) selective floculation (6) size classification (7) chemical processing (8) spray drying Dosage levels and general economics of dispersant use are broadly variant, being dependant upon the agents employed, from the simplist, i.e., sodium silicate or sodium carbonate, to the more complex, as polyacrylates and organo-phosphates. In certain unit processes the dispersant must exhibit unusual chemical stability and persistence, e.g., in protracted pigment slurry shipments. In others, the agent should be fugitive to prevent secondary reactions from occurring, e.g., with high temperature calcination where alkali salts can act as aggregation fluxing agents.

On July 7, 1971, noise regulations for underground coal mines were implemented under provisions set forth in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. These same regulations now also apply to coal mine surface facilities. In August 1971, in anticipation of these regulations, the Bureau of Mines, through the cooperation of the mine operators, conducted extensive noise surveys in three coal cleaning plants. The survey was conducted in an attempt to identify those occupations where exposures would exceed the proposed regulations.

There may be someone here who is not required to run his equipment at its maximum capacity. There may be some fortunate enough to have more crushers than needed, wider conveyor belts than required, and other mill equipment equally oversize. If so, then this paper will have no interest for him; but if most of you are in the situation we in the aggregate producing industry are in, then you probably wish to crowd your mill equipment to its limit. When you do this you must watch for block-up and overloads of all sorts. You need more eyes than you have to guard the critical points. The human eyes that now do nothing much, but watch should be freed for more productive work.

The area described in this paper lies along the inner margin of the Coastal' Plain in Twiggs County, near the exact center of the State of Georgia. Twiggs is one of four counties which produces approximately 75 per cent of the nationals output of kaolin used in the paper trade. In this vicinity the land surface is characterized by coastal plain hills with elevations ranging from about 250 feet, above mean sea level in the flood plain of: the Ocmulgee River to about 550 feet above mean sea level on the hill tops. Surface drainage in the area is southwestward to the Ocmulgee River, the tributaries of which have dissected the land surface exposing thick sections of the upper parts of the hills of Eocene (Ocala Limestone and Barnwell formation) limestone, sand, marl and clay, and in the lower parts of the hills Cretaceous (Tuscaloosa Formation) kaolin, kaolinitic clay, sandy clay, sand and, gravel. The contact between these two principal groups of geologic units is rather easil distinguished as the top of the kaolinitic beds. It is described in detail and mapped in published geologic reports for the area (LaMoreaux, 1946).

Thus sang David three thousand years ago, in tacit acceptance of the condition of war, and in praise of the exceptional military skills with which this warrior king of Israel was endowed. He had cause to exult, for he had consolidated King Saul's conquests and added new ones of his own, not least of which was the capture of Jerusalem. David revealed in this operation that his mastery of the military arts embraced not only the weaponry and tactics of his day, but also strategy and that oldest of intelligence techniques: spies. The Jebusites, who built Jerusalem, had encompassed the city with the first of its many walls, but had neglected to incorporate the sole reliable water supply within its perimeter. This was Ain Gihon, today called the Fountain of the Virgin, which bubbled out on the east slope of Mount Ophel, one of the ridges on which Jerusalem was built, and drained eastward into the Kidron Valley. Water was brought into the city in the traditional manner: by women descending the stony trail outside the wall to fill their jars at the spring. But this essential daily activity was vulnerable to interruption by a hostile force outside the walls. To remedy this weakness, the Jebusites had driven a gallery from the spring a short distance into the water-bearing limestone under the city, and there cut a small collecting basin in the rock, a common way to develop springs throughout this arid region. But then the Jebusites dug a small vertical shaft from the roof of the gallery above the cistern upward about 15 m. From the upper end of this shaft, they constructed a narrow inclined tunnel with rock-cut steps leading up to the city streets. Thus the water supply could be reached even in time of siege.

Due to the relatively remote location of the St. Anthony Mine, the high cost of transportation and milling, plus the low grade nature of the deposit, the United Nuclear Corporation began investigating methods of mechanical upgrading approximately eighteen moths ago. This investigation culminated in the installation of Model 17 and Model 18 ore sorting machines. The machines are marketed in the United States and Canada by Ore Sorters of Canada (Ltd.). The installation of this advanced technology will enable United Nuclear Corporation to fully realize the residual potential of St. Anthony.

INTRODUCTION The role of comminution and related unit operations in mineral processing applications is of major importance. This is especially true in terms of operating costs, since these unit operations represent the major fraction of the overall processing costs. Due to the broad scope and the large number of unit processes and machines involved, Section 3 is divided into five subsections. In Section 3A, General Aspects of Comminution, topics covered include history, terminology, particle¬size distributions, classes of comminution machines, testing and calcu¬lation procedures, and simulation and modeling. In Section 3B, Crush¬ing. the subjects include jaw crushers, gyratory crushers, cone crushers, hammermills, and impactors. The chapters of Section 3C, Grinding, cover aspects common to tumbling mills, ball mills, rod mills, autogenous mills, pebble mills, roller mills, fluid energy mills, other types of grinding machines, and grinding costs. Section 3D, Classification, coverage includes classification theory, hydrocyclones, and mechanical classifiers, and in Section 3E, Screening, the topics presented are classes of screens, selection of vibrating screens, sieve bend screens, and screening media. About five years after the Handbook was begun, Section 3 was unfortunately without an editor or contributors for over half of the chapters. A committee was then organized to expedite completion of the section. When this committee contacted the persons who had agreed to contribute to the section, it was found that many of them wished to resign from their earlier voluntary obligation to AIME. Therefore the committee had to find new contributors for these chap¬ters in addition to other chapters in Section 3. Since there had been no previous effort to locate contributors for Air Classification, Dust Collection, and Washing and Scrubbing, it was agreed to delete these subsections. In Section 3, equipment availability, capacity, and performance data from various manufacturers and users are provided for engineer¬ing use. Selected data from existing installations are also included. The machines that are being used in comminution, classification, and screening are described in detail, and drawings, photographs, and diagrams are presented to supplement the descriptive material. The editors thank and acknowledge the generous effort of the many contributors, some of whom were called upon five or more years after the Handbook was started. It is regretted that Fred C. Bond, who was a member of the committee formed to complete this section, was deceased before the section was finished. During the time that he worked with the committee, he contributed a great deal as an author and councilor.

Slurry technology developed for the marine transport of mineral commodities has been increasingly applied to on-shore slurry transport systems. Reclaim of mineral concentrates, sand tailings for mine backfill and various industrial minerals from storage tanks or ponds normally require a slurry of high density at constant flow rates to improve process performance and to reduce handling costs. An efficient system must accomplish this at minimum capital costs with maximum reliability. Continuing improvements in equipment design to improve repulping efficiency and their application are discussed.
