This study examines the accuracy of area sampling for measuring the dust exposure of mining machine operators in coal mines. The specific objective of this research was to find locations where an area sampler might work better than earlier studies have indicated. The results show that fixed-location area sampling cannot accurately predict the dust exposure of a machine operator, even when the best fixed location is sought, the fixed location is quite close to the operator and the bias due to the dust concentration gradient is corrected. Industrial hygienists have known for many years that area sampling is unsuitable for measuring air contaminant exposures in the workplace. Near contaminant sources, the dilution air and the contaminants are not evenly mixed. Therefore, when workers are near contaminant sources, exposure measurements must be taken from the worker's breathing zone to be accurate.

The exchange of heat from wall rock to ventilating air was studied in a cross-cut driven through fresh rock on the 4600 level of the Kelley Mine, Six- teen thermocouple probes, 10 inches long, twenty-three probes, 7 feet long, and five probes, 50 feet long, were emplaced in the walls soon after blasting and wall -rock temperatures were monitored intermittently over a two-year period to determine heat loss from the wall rock. Temperatures, humidity, and velocity measurements were made of the air at the same times to determine heat gain. An important but less well-defined variable was the heat transfer by water entering the crosscut from fractures and leaving in the ditch. The balance of heat in and heat out at each probe station is within an acceptable range. Theoretical and empirical models for heat flux into a cylindrical opening fit the data reasonably well, also.

A numerical analysis and an experiment were done on groundwater flow past a bore hole with a cylindrical obstacle at its center. Flow around the obstacle in the bore hole was studied in detail. Two dimensional governing equations to simulate this flow were written for the hydraulic head and seepage velocity in a porous medium and for the vorticity, stream function, and velocity in the bore hole. These equations were non-dimensionalized and solved by using the alternating direction implicit and successive-over-relaxation finite difference methods. Flow visualization experiments and velocity measurements in the bore hole were done with a two dimensional model composed of a porous medium. The numerical analysis procedures were validated by a comparison of numerical and experimental results. Effects of the Reynolds number and obstacle size on flow in the bore hole are clearly shown in the velocity and streamline profiles. The quantitative relation between the seepage velocity in the porous medium and the velocity of flow around the obstacle in the bore hole also were estimated.

Fine coal refuse is often pumped, as slurry, into surface impoundments as a means of permanent disposal. As the available volume is filled, the height of the embankments are frequently increased. Many times the additional embankment material is placed upon consolidated fine coal refuse. There has been some concern about the long-term effect of consolidation of this material at or above the liquid limit upon its shear strength. A laboratory investigation was performed using three different types of fine coal slurry taken from Central Appalachian coal preparation plants. The refuse was consolidated in 10-foot plexiglass columns under incremental amounts of surcharge loading. The incremental loads were designed to simulate the effect of increasing the height of a refuse embankment on top of the consolidating coal slurry. After the refuse in the columns had consolidated for several months, the columns were cut apart and triaxial tests were performed on both the consolidated material and unconsolidated material for comparison of their shear strength parameters.

A Mineração da Trindade (Samitri) is a major Brazilian iron ore producer. Founded in 1939, privately owned Samitri operates six mines with a total production capacity of 14.5 Mt/a (16 million stpy). The mines are located in southeastern Brazil in the state of Minas Gerais. They are operating in the iron ore quadrangle, Brazil's primary iron ore-producing region. In addition to iron ore production, Samitri has the capability to produce 350 kt/a (386,000 stpy) of ferruginous manganese ore from two mines, also located in the iron ore quadrangle. Historically, about 70% of Samitri's production of lump ore, sinter feed and pellet feed is exported. Destinations include Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Trinidad and Tobago, China, Turkey and the United States. Alegria Mine In September 1989, Samitri started a new processing plant to treat itabirite, a low-grade iron ore. The goal of the plant was to produce sinter feed (coarse fraction) and pellet feed (fine fraction). Primary separation of sinter feed from pellet feed was accomplished with conventional vibrating screens making a 0.4-mm (40-mesh) cut. The screen oversize was stockpiled as sinter feed. The undersize was deslimed with hydrocyclones and upgraded by conventional froth flotation. Resulting pellet feed grades ranged from 3% to 3.5% Si02. A change in pellet feed requirements by Samarco Mineração SA, a Samitri subsidiary, called for Si02 levels below 1 % and increased production levels. Moreover, market demands called for a change in sinter feed size distributions. Unfortunately, lower pellet feed Si02 levels could not be achieved with the existing process. This was because of the presence of 35% +0.15 mm (+100 mesh) in flotation feed. Flowsheet development. Laboratory and pilot-plant studies conducted at Samitri's research facility found that to achieve lower Si02 levels, the +0.15 mm (+100 mesh) in flotation feed must be kept below 5% to 10%.

INTRODUCTION The Northwestern University Rigid Block Model (NURBM) has been extended to explicitly model dilatant behavior of rock joints. By incorporating dilatancy, the resistance to shear displacement and slip, which previously was limited to simple Coulomb friction, along edge-to- edge contacts is now provided by contact roughness as well as frictional resistance. The explicit formulation is based on concepts presented by Plesha (1985) in which a plasticity-based phenomenological approach was used to model dilatant joint behavior. This approach has been modified to allow for joint closure upon reversal of shear deformation. After presenting a brief description of the new joint constitutive relationship, model behavior will be illustrated with two examples. The first involves a simple two-block model to simulate a cyclic direct shear test of a single joint. The second example involves simulation of a large cavern in a moderately jointed rock mass subjected to cyclic excitation. It will be shown that in- creasing joint roughness increases cavern stability by interlocking of adjacent blocks. JOINT CONSTITUTIVE RELATIONSHIP Within NURBM adjacent two-dimensional rigid blocks interact along their common edge-to-edge contact with contact forces transmitted at the contact midpoint. The contact constitutive relationship was originally restricted to a Coulomb friction yield criterion with no tensile stresses permitted along the smooth contact surfaces. The local coordinate system for any contact is described as shown in Figure 1 with the elastic stresses and displacements related by the linear- elastic constitutive law: [ ] The contact microstructure has been modeled as Patton-type saw-tooth surfaces such as shown in Figure 2. Sliding can be active along the right asperity with angle aR and length lR or along the left asperity with angle a and length lL. In general, aR and aL will difkr as will lR and lL but for purposes of this paper it has been assumed that these angles and lengths are identical. By a simple transformation, the microscopic asperity stresses can be expressed in terms of the macroscopic contact stresses [ ] If Coulomb friction is assumed along the asperity surfaces, the plastic slip condition will be [ ] where µ is the friction coefficient with the convention that compressive stress is negative. Resource Technology Associates (RTA) has developed a flocculation-flotation process that increases phosphate recoveries from current operating plants. A major advantage of the process is the ability to float the phosphate from the matrix without a preliminary separation to remove the slimes. A majority of the material that is now discarded in the slime fraction will be recovered in the new process. The process can also be used to recover phosphate material from current slime ponds either as a separate feed or mixed with matrix material. Flotation tails from the process demonstrate improved dewatering characteristics then those seen from conventional float tails.

The Kipushi deposit, where the Prince Leopold Mine has been installed, belongs to Union Miniere du Haut-Katanga and is located in the Belgian Congo, 20 miles SW of Elisabethville, at the vicinity of the Northern Rodhesian Border. The deposit is of the hydrothermal metasomatic vein-type; mineralisation took place, through the limestone of the, lower Kundelungu. This is a special fea¬ture of the deposit, compared to the other copper deposits of the neighbourhood, both in the. Belgian Congo and in Rhodesia. Actually, the primary mineralisation of these other deposits; is directly related to the stratigraphic systems: schistous dolomitic in the Belgian Congo and Roan in Rhodesia. Both facies are older than the Kundelungu and separated from this formation by a tectonic cataclysm. The valuable elements occuring at Kipushi are principally copper; and zinc. The deposit also contains smaller quantities of lead, precious metals and other elements including germanium.

Heap leaching of ore with cyanide is a common and economical means of extracting precious metals (gold and silver) from mined ore. The use of cyanide, and the heap leach process, can seriously impact the environment. In the worst case, catastrophic failure of containment structures can release toxic levels of cyanide into receiving bodies of water, resulting in toxicity to ecological communities and contamination of public water supplies. Furthermore, cyanide degradation products such as nitrates can also impact local streams, lakes, and aquifers. Even if cyanide can be removed, the crushed residual ore may generate acid solutions that can release toxic heavy metals into the environment. Pintail Systems, Inc. (Pintail) of Aurora, CO, in conjunction with technology partners Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) and Fairmile Gold Corporation (Fairmile), have developed a microbially-based precious metal lixiviant that can be used as an alternative to cyanide. The microbial process, called BioLix, is Pintail's second-generation biotechnology product for the recovery of precious metals from ore. The BioLix process is based on the enzymatic induction of organic lixiviant compounds using proprietary inducing agents and microorganisms. The process operates at near neutral pH and ambient temperatures using non-pathogenic microorganisms and food-grade chemicals. Precious metal extraction is also enhanced through the employment of microorganisms that facilitate mineral-solution reactions such as surfactant generation (improved wettability), and oxidation of gangue minerals that expose mineral surfaces to leaching. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the BioLix process, results from laboratory bench-scale experiments and a column study are presented. In addition, new applications for this enabling technology are discussed and include re-leaching of spent ore heaps, in situ leaching, and cyanide replacement for heap leaching.

The major underlying threat to man's successful survival and happy existence on this planet is our own prolification. This poses an even greater threat to the future of civilization than continued wars and even "The Bomb" itself. Just the predictions of the world's population trend are awesome and demand our serious thought. This trend has been given the now well-known term, "The Population Explosion" - and this is literally what is taking place throughout most of the countries around the globe. Today, the world's resources support approximately 3.3 billion people. Based on the present world population growth rate of 2.1 percent, there will be another 65, million just one year from today. Such an increase in one year means that the world will add a greater population than that of Mexico and Canada combined. Projecting at this remarkable, but unchecked, growth rate, 6.7 billion people will be competing for survival by the end of this century.

INTRODUCTION The process of solid-liquid separation can be an important decision in plant design. It is very important that one must consider not only the most effective means of solids-liquid separation, but also to consider the effects on upstream and downstream processes. A solid-liquid separation is done either to remove the solids £ran the liquids as in copper concentrates or rave a liquid from the solids as in uranium operations. In either case, washing can be an important consideration to clean the solids or recover the liquids. This section will deal with solid- liquid separation other than thermal, sedimntation processes, or hydro cyclones. The three major areas discussed are pressure filters, vacuum filters, and centrifuges that are most cannon in the minerals industry. PRESSURE FILTERS Pressure filters are one common type of solid-liquid dewatering devices. There are my different types of pressure filters that are both continuous and batch operations. They are characterized by using an external pressure to push or force the slurry through porous media to force the liquids out of the solids. Whereas vacuum filters are limited to one amsphere or bar working pressure, some types of pressure filters operate as high as 16 bars pressure. Pressure filters are also effective for hot slurries where a high boiling point can be a problem or precipitation occurs under vacuum. The types of pressure filters most common in the mineral processing industry include plate and frame and recessed plate filters. Some of the new technologies including automatic pres- sure filters and belt presses are also discussed. Plate Frame Filters Plate and frame filters are one of the oldest and most effective means of both dewatering solids and clarifying liquids. Plate and frame filters consist of a skeleton that is used to hang or support alternate plates and frames that are pressed together to form chambers. Zeolite ores and protores occur in extensive deposits in the western United States. A recent paper1 describes the general geology and mineralogy of these deposits and their geographical distribution. The zeolites are alkali-and silica-rich varieties of mordenite, erionite, chabazite, phillipsite, ferrierite, and clinoptilolite. The zeolites were formed primarily by the alteration of Tertiary pyroclastics and in some cases by the alteration of Tertiary siliceous flows. The altered pyroclastics are of principal economic significance. The volcanic ash and tuff were deposited in restricted basins where saline lakes developed. The pyroclastic layers often are of uniform thickness and macrotexture for miles from the center of the basin and interfinger with detritals toward the edge of the basin. Thus, in addition to unaltered volcanic glass, the gangue minerals in these deposits include some combination of primary minerals in the pyroclastics, alteration products of the glass other than the zeolite of interest, and detrital minerals. The gangue minerals include quartz, cristobalite, tridymite, opal, orthoclase, micro cline, montmorillonite, hornblende, calcite, gypsum, thenardite, and iron oxides. The presence of one or two other zeolites in the layer in some cases also is considered as gangue. There are no quantitative mineralogical descriptions of these deposits in the literature; this: study was undertaken to obtain this information. As the zeolites occur as single crystals, crystal aggregates, zeolite-glass particles and in cemented aggregates, a method of study was chosen which would give the size distribution of the zeolite in these types of association. For this reason dispersion of the rock was achieved with a minimum of grinding action. This excluded those zeolite ores, silicified by hydrothermal altera¬tion which require grinding. A relative index of the ease of disaggregation of the zeolite ores thus is obtained, but the technique does not give absolute size distributions of the zeolite crystals. Samples were selected for analysis which do not necessarily represent the best ore horizon, but do represent a spectrum of zeolite occurrences from significant deposits. They are mordenite, erionite, and phillipsite from Rome, Oregon, clinoptilolite and chabazite from Reese River, Nevada, chabazite (and var. herschelite) from Bowie, Arizona, erionite from Jersey Valley, Nevada, and erionite from Pine Valley, Navada.

The Ray Mines Division has a long and illustrious history beginning in 1911, as one of the early underground block caving copper mining operations. The tonnage mined from the beginning of operations, increased from about 8, 000 TPD in the early years to the present daily tonnage of 22, 500 tons, mined by open pit methods. The Ray basic milling practice has been relatively unchanged since 1927 when the sulphide-flotation process was introduced at Ray. The leach-precipitation-flotation process introduced in 1956 has been the only major process change. The change from underground to open pit' mining was accompanied by a renewed drilling and exploration program which developed large tonnages of low grade copper ores both in the porphyry and the diabase. The ore bodies as outlined were of such a grade and size that it soon became apparent that economical operations could not be developed with the lower tonnage rate. Also that in order to develop these newly proven ores, it would be necessary to move the Ray crushing plant, the Ray. supporting shops, offices, a substantial part of the Ray townsite, and would also involve the rerouting of Mineral Creek, a typical Arizona stream which is dry most of the year but can flow as high, as 8, 000 second feet in the rainy season. This paper describes those changes in flow sheet made necessary both by the increased tonnage .and the requirement to move as much of the crushing facilities from the Ray area as practical in order to free the mine for the extension of its physical limits.

Normal process development for pressure preoxidation treatment of refractory gold ores starts with laboratory batch autoclave tests, followed by operation of a continuous autoclave pilot plant for confirmation of the various process options. This scheme will generally provide good information showing the effects of such variables as grind size, time, and temperature, and will indicate whether autoclave preoxidation will produce solids that are amenable to cyanidation for gold recovery. However, several recent test programs conducted over the last three to four years have shown that the cyanide leaching responses of treated solids from the batch tests can differ considerably from those achieved by the continuous pilot plant autoclave. Examples are provided to demonstrate these differences and to show the importance of extending the laboratory investigations to include the use of a semicontinuous autoclave test procedure. A test case is cited in which this procedure provided data that could not be obtained from batch tests.

"The digestion of minerals in strong acids or at elevated temperatures can result in the release of large amounts of silicic acid which can polymerize in solution to form colloidal silica and gels. Colloidal silica can cause a number of problems including interfering with flocculation, initiating crud formation in solvent extraction (SX), decreasing SX extraction kinetics and increasing SX phase disengagement times. Huntsman’s POLYSIL® polyether coagulants have a “lock and key” relationship with the surface of colloidal silica to help lower the concentration of these particles in solution, improve process efficiency and reduce reagent losses by minimizing crud formation. This paper investigates some of the issues caused by colloidal silica in hydrometallurgy processes and illustrates how the use of POLYSIL® coagulants has helped to improve process outcomes. INTRODUCTION Coagulation differs from flocculation in a number of ways. Coagulants are relatively small molecules that modify the surfaces of fine particles, weakening repulsive forces between them and allowing particles to stick together, while flocculants are generally molecules that are large enough to bridge the boundary layers between the particles. With flocculation, addition rate and mixing all make a difference to the flocs formed. Coagulation, on the other hand, is an equilibrium process. With coagulation it is only necessary to achieve good mixing, and coagulates will form as Brownian motion pushes the particles into each other. In real systems, this process is complete within seconds. Huntsman’s POLYSIL® polyether based coagulants have a strong affinity with the surface of colloidal silica formed by the polymerization of silicic acid. While silica found in minerals has a low aqueous solubility, large amounts of silica as silicic acid can be released as these minerals are digested in strong acids at elevated temperatures. The solubility of free silicic acid is about 150 ppm under pH conditions typical in acid leach environments (1), so the bulk of the silica will polymerize in solution to form colloidal silica. Colloidal silica can pass through a hydrometallurgy process without affecting any of the operations. However, it can cause a number of problems. These include gelling in a leach, interfering with flocculation or crystallization, initiating crud formation (2,3,4), decreasing extraction kinetics and increasing phase disengagement times (5,6) in solvent extraction. In these cases, coagulating the silica with POLYSIL® coagulants can reduce or eliminate the problem by enabling these particles to be flocculated and removed from the solution."

Modern microprocessor systems make it possible to use several variables to anticipate changes in the process and to react with responses before upsets can be magnified by the process or by control action. Through tighter control, "insurance" can be eliminated from process set points without affecting product quality. In actual operation with a traveling grate furnace this control philosophy has produced savings of up to 20% in fuel consumption and 8% in fan power usage while producing a more consistent quality product.

As a step in the endeavor to reduce future tunneling costs in New York City, the Environmental Protection Administration, Dept. of Water Resources, instituted a program in 1972 to monitor the performance of the lining of one of its tunnels. A monitoring program was included as part of the contract specifications for the East Branch Interceptor Sewer tunnel for the Port Richmond Water Pollution Control Project in the hope that measured data would indicate possible future cost effective design or construction improvements. The monitoring program involved measuring ground deformations, circumferential liner stresses, longitudinal liner stresses, and jacking pressures. This paper presents some of the findings from these measurements, with emphasis on liner stresses. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The 3.05m (10 ft) diameter steel lined tunnel was constructed under two separate contracts. The easterly portion, Contract 3A, was approximately 3109m (10,200 ft) in length and constructed by Peter Kiewit Sons Co.1 The westerly portion, Contract 3B, was approximately 2160m (7100 ft) in length, and constructed by Richmond Constructors, a joint venture of Grow Tunneling Corp., MacLean Grove & Company, Inc., Grove, Shepherd. Wilson & Kruge, Inc., Morrison-Knudsen Company, Inc., and Andrew Catapano Co., Inc. Each contract included three test stations, hence a total of six along the tunnel route. Excavated material along the tunnel route consisted primarily of dense fine to coarse sand with varying percentages of gravel and silt with occasional boulders. Pockets of organic silt were encountered on Contract 3B and a large portion of Contract 3A ran through slightly weathered serpentine and schist. Overlying material and the groundwater level varied considerably along the route as did the height of overburden. Figures 1 and 2 show the generalized soil profiles for Contracts 3A (PK stations) and 3B (RC stations) respectively.

A great deal of effort has been put forth in recent years to arrive at accurate projections of the demands for tunnels in this decade. In reviewing the statistics presented by various study groups, it appears that during the decade from 1960-69, there were some 1,335 miles of rock and soft ground construction tunnels excavated throughout the world. These statistics indicate 645 miles of rock tunnel and 689 miles of soft ground tunnel were excavated during the last decade. This is expected to increase to 3,000 miles in the 1970's according to projections made by various authorities in the field of construction tunneling. I point out the above statistics to emphasize two main points: (1) The demands for tunneling in this decade alone are staggering. (2) There is a fairly even distribution in the amount of rock tunneling and soft ground tunneling being excavated. Unfortunately, available statistics do not answer many important questions about tunneling which are of great importance to the contractor and to boring machine designers. For example, how many of the projects completed in the past decade involved both soft ground and rock tunneling? How many projects involved tunneling in conditions where both rock and soft ground were contacted at the same face. While the answers to these questions remain unanswered, I am sure most of you can think of numerous examples of projects where mixed face conditions are prevalent. Many of you are probably familiar with the Austin Crosstown Interceptor which was bid last month in Austin, Texas. Here is a project involving 57,000 feet of tunnel where limestones and clay shales are expected to be traversed. Another project, the Tonner Tunnels No. 1 and No. 2, near Los Angeles, involve some 22,000 feet of tunnel where mixed soil and rock conditions are expected. Mining companies have been very interested in the presence of a number of small but high-grade ore bodies of base metals in northern Wisconsin and the west/central section of the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan. The region is rural with outdoor recreation/tourism and lumbering being the key industries. The economy of the region is based on the use of its natural resources, and mining is not a new activity to the region, especially the UP. The western UP was historically a key mining district for copper and iron, and today the central UP has a significant iron-mining district. However, all efforts to develop the base metal ore bodies have been met with a storm of controversy involving the local community, regional activists, Native Americans, and the state government, and only one mine has gone into operation. There is concern by some stakeholders about the sustainability of mining in communities that depend on the environment for tourism, recreation, and other commercial activities. There have been four attempts to get the necessary approvals to mine in this region: the successful Flambeau Mine effort (Wisconsin), the failed Crandon project (Wisconsin) and Lynne project (Wisconsin) efforts, and the continuing effort to get the Eagle Project (UP of Michigan) approved. The cases are presented to illustrate the project situation, the history of the permitting effort, and the opposing parties and their concerns. The case of the Eagle Project is looked at in detail by using the method of discourse communities and discourse analysis. Results of the analysis provide insight into the communication efforts to address community concerns about sustainability and what more can be done to improve this dialogue.
