One of the foremost problems in reclaiming prime farmland is compaction of the subsoil which is caused by the reclamation equipment. Wheel tractor-scrapers are most commonly used to replace subsoil and have been blamed for the majority of the compaction problems. Two methods of alleviating this problem that are presently being considered are mechanical subsoil loosening machines and truck- shovel combinations for subsoil handling. A field study was conducted in which dry bulk density measurements were taken in an effort to determine the effectiveness of truck-shovel combinations and subsoil loosening equipment in reducing bulk density in comparison to typical scraper replacement.

"In the early 1920’s, the City of Tulsa, Oklahoma constructed an approximately 8,238-foot long tunnel, the Tiawah Tunnel, through bedrock. Voids behind the concrete tunnel liner were detected via probe drilling in early 2000 as part of an interior visual condition assessment. In 2012 and 2015, conditions along the entire tunnel were efficiently assessed through geophysical investigation using ground penetrating radar (GPR) along the inner tunnel crown and at various select locations within the tunnel. Fifty-seven (57) potential voids, extending up to 19 inches in depth and 12 feet in width, were detected with 1,000 MHz GPR and confirmed through probe drilling with approximately 80% accuracy. GPR proved to be an efficient and reliable technology for void detection behind concrete tunnel lining. This paper highlights the geophysical investigation and how geophysical efforts were combined with other investigation efforts to definitively determine the presence of voids outside of the tunnel lining.INTRODUCTION The city of Tulsa, Oklahoma has a population of about 400,000 people. The original source of water for the city was the Arkansas River. The first pumping operation provided untreated water to homes and businesses in 1904. The residents of Tulsa found this water to be unacceptable due to the high levels of salt and gypsum present. As the city grew, land and storage/treatment facilities were acquired in order to obtain and distribute a more suitable raw water. The raw water needs for the city are currently satisfied by transport and treatment of about 100 million gallons per day (MGD) of water from surface water sources. Water is transported many miles from Spavinaw/Eucha and Oologah lakes to Yahola Lake and the Lynn Lane Reservoir (totaling over 3-billion gallon capacity). From here, the raw water is treated and transported to the various customers (City of Tulsa 2015). The Tulsa Metropolitan Utility Authority (TMUA) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the raw water transport system."

One of the primary interests of the United States Department of Energy's Mine Planning Division is to fully develop avenues of technical research which potentially offer positive effects on coal mine productivity. One such area of research involves the removal of methane gas from unmined portions of coalbeds through vertical wells drilled from surface locations. As coalbed methane content is reduced, less gas is available for flow into the mine, and consequently ventilation requirements are decreased and/or coal extraction rates increase. Another attractive aspect of the vertical borehole drainage method is that it presents an opportunity to recover and utilize significant quantities of methane gas, which would otherwise be wasted to the atmosphere. The viability of removing gas from the Mary Lee coalbed using stimulated vertical boreholes was first suggested by Elder and Deul as a result of a United States Bureau of Mines' drilling project conducted from 1971 to 1974 (4). Other United States Bureau of Mines' studies forecasted that degasification would eventually be necessary in the Mary Lee coalbed because most new or expanding mine development would take place at depths exceeding 1 000 feet (305 meters), where the methane problem would be severe (3) (13). In 1975 a large-scaled drilling program was designed in order to supply industry's anticipated need for a degasification technology in the Warrior coal basin, Alabama. The results of this government/industry sponsored effort were to be specifically applicable to the Mary Lee coalbed, the most extensive and economically important deep minable coal present in the area. Major technical objectives of this program are twofold: (1) to measure the effects of various well completion designs, particularly hydraulic stimulation, on mining and (2) to determine the effects of well spacing on gas drainage rates. A cooperative agreement was established with United States Steel Corporation in late 1975 and field work began shortly thereafter in the proximity of a newly developing mine near Oak Grove, Alabama. Government responsibility for this program was transferred from the United States Bureau of Mines to the United States Department of Energy in October 1977. To date, as a result of this program, twenty-one wells have been completed into the Mary Lee coalbed at the Oak Grove site. Seventeen of these wells were drilled on an experimental grid pattern located two miles from the active mine. These grid wells are primarily being used to generate data necessary to determine the effects of well spacing on gas drainage rates and will also provide a large amount of information regarding the long-term effects of degasification on mining. The four remaining wells (designated Ton through TW4) were placed near the mine so that the full effects of completion could be studied within the short time required for underground interception. Results gathered from the first two test wells (TW1 and TW2) have been reported in detail (10) and indicated that several improvements were necessary to increase gas drainage rates. Hydraulic stimulation was one of the most important aspects of well design that required improvement. Nitrogen-charged foam stimulation treatment was used at TW3 and TW4 instead of the gelled-fluid type stimulation used at the first two near-mine test wells.

Two aromatic-type chelating agents, 1,10 phenanthroline (phen) and 8-quinolinol (quin), were tested as specific depressants for magnetite in the cationic silica flotation of magnetic taconite concentrates. Micro and batch flotation tests, along with zeta potential and adsorption measurements were used. In the presence of a cationic collector, dodecylammonium chloride (DAC), the Fe/phen surface chelate electro-statically repelled DAC, and magnetite was depressed. The negatively charged Fe(quin)2(OH)2-on the magnetite surface attracted the cationic collector and made magnetite floatable.

The White Pine Mine is located 4- 1 /2 miles south of Lake Superior in the western part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The orebody occurs in tabular, gently dipping Keweenawan sediments. GEOLOGY The orebody outcrops beneath 30-50 feet of Pleistocene clays and dips to the east and northeast to a depth of 3, 000 feet in five miles. It lies midway between the Porcupine Mountains and the Bergland Hills, both of which are steeply dipping felsite and coarse porphyry intrusives, extrusives and sediments (Figures 1 and 2). The orebody sediments were deposited in the Keweenawan basin during mid- and upper Keweenawan times. Mineralization occurs in the basal 20 to 25 feet of the Nonesuch formation, which is made up primarily of laminated siltstone s. Native copper, chalcocite, and silver are the ore minerals. The ore is mined by trackless room-and-pillar methods.

Industrial minerals are just other rocks, except for the unique characteristics that make them useful in an industrial process. There is not a ready market for this type mineral and one or more uses must be developed to sustain production. The name "olivine" is a generic term used to indicate a group of orthosilicate minerals in a solid solution series, with forsterite (Mg2SiO4) and fayalite (Fe2SiO4) as endpoints. Since neither is found alone in nature, the mineral is always a combination of the two. The commercial deposits are high in magnesium and on the high end of the melting scale in the series. The name comes from the olive-green color.

As productivity improvements reduced the number of continuous miner sections from seven to three while maintaining full productive capacity, a decision was made to test an advancing tailgate ventilation system on the shortwall mining section. Having the shortwall mine its own return air system has freed the third mining section for more productive, less costly mining. The advancing tailgate has provided effective ventilation across the face and gob with acceptable pressure losses. The tailgate development continuous miner section has been since transformed from a low productivity part-time function to a high productivity development/retreat panel and is available for long term mine development duties also.

The Robbins Company has developed a boring machine, with a rubber packer serving as the gripper system, for blind boring of raises without using drill pipe. This machine is the BorPak and has many applications for use in the mining industry which will improve productivity. In addition to the cost savings, the boring method will lead to increased safety in constructing blind raises. The advantages of using the BorPak in a mining environment will be discussed together with possible applications.

It has already been said and written many times that the construction of tunnels in urban areas has proved more and more indispensable, if not vital. The subsequent development of tunnelling for 15 or 20 years has brought large and sometimes spectacular improvements in the fiel of execution methods. But, particularly in urban areas, the difficulties to be overcome have been and still remain very important. As a matter of fact, most of big cities, have been settled near rivers or lakes; therefore the geological nature of the subsoil is soft ground and the level of ground water is high. As a consequence, tunnelling is often faced with many well-known difficulties and dangers issued from decompression or loosening of the ground, sometimes accompanied by a lowering of the water table. This may compromise the safety of the excavation itself and of the workers, and also cause settlements which many severely damage nearby buildings or structures. This is the reason why it is always necessary to work out specially adapted methods and even to develop new ones. The Turquoise Ridge gold deposit is located near the Getchell Mine, 72 km (42 miles) northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada. The deposit is owned by First Miss Gold Inc. The host rocks consist of Ordovician and Cambrian age shales and limestones. They have been crosscut by the northeast-trending Turquoise Ridge shear zone and northwest-trending shear zones. Gold mineralization occurs at depths from 427 m (1 400 ft.) to 671 m (2 200 ft.), along the intersection of these structures. Large tonnage, flat-lying deposits occur where folded, favorable beds are intersected by the faults. The carbonate within the beds has been replaced with silica, pyrite and arsenic sulfides.

A simple method for estimating the steady-state water quality of a pit lake is presented. The steady-state concentration of a conservative chemical constituent in a pit lake is shown to be a simple function of inflow rate, evaporation rate, and inflow concentration. An analytical method is presented for estimating the equilibrium ground water inflow rate for use in water quality predictions. The time required to reach chemical steady-state is estimated using an iterative mass balance model. Mine operators should find the methodology useful for planning and screening-level regulatory applications where conservative estimates of pit lake water quality are desirable.

Microwave pretreatment can improve grindability by weakening brittle particulate material prior to size reduction. The differential thermal expansion experienced by multiphase materials during rapid heating can also promote damage in the grain-boundary region, which may ultimately translate into enhanced liberation. The effect of microwave pretreatment on the breakage characteristics of different ores has been studied using the Ultrafast Load Cell. The energy accumulated during impact (fracture energy) and the particle stiffness have been measured for untreated and microwaved ore samples. It has been observed that microwave pretreatment can weaken brittle multiphase particulate material, as observed by reductions in fracture energy and increase in damage.

MOCCA is a Multivariable Optimal Constrained Control Algorithm developed specifically for non-square industrial control applications with practical difficulties such as interactions, time delays, constraints, modelling development, etc. MOCCA consists of an off-line simulation/translation module, for tuning the control parameters, and an on-line module that implements the designed control law. This paper describes an evaluation of MOCCA on the Hemlo grinding circuit which comprises one open circuit ball mill and two closed circuit ball mills in series. In this case a 4x4 unconstrained control problem was considered. The manipulated variables included the fresh ore feed rate and three pump box water additions. The controlled variables were the grinding circuit product particle size and three pump box levels. In this application soft constraints were implemented through control action and control error weighting. The feedforward capability of MOCCA was used to compensate for a measured water flow disturbance to one of the pump boxes. MOCCA performed very well during plant evaluations when compared to the original classical multi-loop control strategy and proved to be quite robust. Perhaps most importantly, the process engineers and plant operators have a high level of comfort both in understanding MOCCA's general operating principles, and with its demonstrated performance.

Six industry trends will have significant effect on the way mining equipment is designed and supported in the years ahead: 1. MINING IS MIGRATING TO LESSER DEVELOPED PARTS OF THE WORLD The global recession of the early 1980's drove down commodity prices and intensified cost competition. This caused a fairly dramatic trend in mining away from higher cost operations in developed countries to richer, lower cost deposits in developing countries. Miners operating in lesser developed parts of the world will place higher value on rugged, durable designs that can live in more difficult and sometimes abusive conditions. They need engines and power train systems that are more tolerant of a wide variation in fuel quality and oil specifications. They'll require machines that are simpler to operate, simpler to maintain, simpler to troubleshoot and simpler to repair. And they'll require creative means of support in getting technical information, parts and components to remote operational sites. Mining equipment in the future will be more durable and simple than it is today, and product support will grow in importance as purchasing criterion. 2. THE MINING INDUSTRY IS CONSOLIDATING An intense amount of corporate acquisition and industry consolidation activity is occurring, to the point that today just 50 mining companies account for 55% of the western world non-fuel mineral production. Consolidation will continue, leading in the future to an industry structure weighted heavily toward a few key global mining houses.

Optical smoke monitoring fills an important gap in ventilation and fire safety: namely monitoring of smoky, low temperature fires where little CO and heat are generated. Smoke monitoring also avoids the nuisance alarms due to diesel exhaust, battery chargers, blasting and welding. The smoke optical density (OD) fire alarm standard specified by MSHA presents an opportunity for improved safety. Experience of actual mine usage of the SmokeBoss*100 is reviewed, with particular regard to effectivity, maintenance and cost.

For many years drilling and blasting has been considered more of an art than a science. This is still true in some respects, but today scientific approaches to drilling and blasting design must be used to plan an efficient operation which achieves desired fragmentation within constraints. These constraints involve minimizing damage to the wall or nearby permanent structures and avoiding undesirable fragmentation and mine dilution which can adversely affect operation costs. The degree of fragmentation by blasting is the most important single factor in any attempt to optimize the overall cost of the mining operations. The mining cycle begins with the drilling and blasting operations, which result in a given blasted rock size distribution. While this operation represents only about 20% of total mining costs, the efficiency and costs of the subsequent operations are strongly dependent on the fragment distribution obtained.

Sonora Mining Corporation (SMC) operates the 6,000 tonne per day Jamestown open pit gold mine in the Mother Lode district of California. The mine has been in operation since January, 1987, and has produced approximately 7,800 kilograms of gold since start-up. The property consists of five ore bodies lying along a five kilometer stretch of the famous Mother Lode vein system. At present, only the Harvard ore body is being mined. The Harvard pit is centered around a historic underground mine of the same name that was operated from 1896 to 1916. The present ore body averages 2.5 grams gold per tonne as free milling gold and auriferous pyrite. The project consists of the open pit mine and concentrator complex in Tuolumne County, California, and a carbon-in-pulp leach plant located near Yerington, Nevada.

"A direct route for the reduction of magnesium oxide to magnesium using thermal plasma processing, with methane as the reducing gas, has been systematically evaluated. A feasibility study of the reduction reaction has been performed on the MgO-CH4 system at different methane concentrations and temperatures. The effects of changes in the key process parameters, such as the oxide-to-methane ratio and plasma power, on the yield of magnesium have been systematically evaluated. A maximum yield of about 61 mol% Mg was obtained using power of 20.0 kW and a molar ratio of MgO:CH4=1:1. Phase, morphological, elemental and binding energy analyses were performed on the product powders to understand the reduction reaction. Surface oxidation was observed in smaller magnesium particles in all the experiments, while the in-situ sintering of magnesium rods was observed at a molar ratio of MgO:CH4=1:1.5. Magnesium carbide (Mg2C3) was observed in the product, and its mechanism of formation is proposed using phase equilibrium data and a predominance diagram.IntroductionMagnesium has an excellent combination of low density and high strength. These properties have increased worldwide demand for and use of magnesium. Two major processes are used in the commercial synthesis of magnesium metal. The first method is electrolytic reduction and the second is thermal reduction using Pidgeon process. These processes can be classified as traditional techniques, but there are numerous emerging technologies that aim at reducing the production cost of Mg, its environmental impact and energy consumption. Thermal plasma processing is one emerging technique that has great potential in all the abovementioned key areas of magnesium production.Traditional reduction techniques. Two major reduction techniques, namely electrolytic and thermal reduction, have been used in the commercial production of magnesium. A mineral rights holding can ultimately only be turned to account by the profitable mining of ore on that property. The evaluation of South African gold mineral rights properties must therefore be carried out by assuming that they have potential to form part or all of a future gold mine. Such analysis involves the simulation of many of the estimation procedures that are normally carried out in a full feasibility study of a new mining venture but using far less data. This paper describes in detail the evaluation procedures that may be applied to an individual property and then indicates how these techniques can be applied to a whole mineral rights portfolio.
