The definitions of system pressure loss (mine head) and system resistance, which are traditionally associated with single-fan net- works, are applied to multiple-fan ventilation networks. The system characteristics -- relations among air power, pressure loss, air quantity and resistance -- are analyzed by introducing the concept of subsystems. These subsystems are associated with the fans located in a cutset of the network. For a multiple-fan network, the resistances for the subsystems and total system are dependent on the quantity ratios of the subsystems. In general the pressure loss of a subsystem or a total system does not vary as the square of the corresponding air quantity. If the quantity ratios of subsystems are all held constant, then the resistances become constant and the pressure losses are predictable from the quantities employing the "square law." The system resistance has a minimum value under the natural- splitting flow pattern. Being independent of the value of system quantity, the minimum system resistance provides a basis for comparing the different networks.

Short term laboratory cell electrorefining experiments were performed to examine the impact of electrolyte composition, current density and temperature on deposit structure, roughness, and adhesion to 2B mill finished 316L stainless steel. Copper electrodeposits were produced using synthetic electrolytes with thiourea and the continuous addition of glue. Deposit structures were evaluated using X-ray diffractometry. Surface roughness was measured using profilometry and analyzed using scaling analysis. Finally, an internally developed method was used to measure the force required to remove the electrodeposited copper from stainless steel to determine adhesion strength.

Studies have been carried out with the High Pressure Roller Mill, HPRM, to produce calcium carbonate minus 10 micron. This paper presents the optimization of the specific grinding force of the HPRM system for a maximum energy utilization when limestone is ground. In addition, experimental tests of producing carbonate minerals using the HPRM as a pre-crusher are described in this paper.

This paper deals primarily with roof bolting in Kentucky coal mines from January 1, 1949, through December 31, 1954, a six year period. The Consolidation Coal Co? (Ky.), a division of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co., began systemmatic roof bolting in November 1948 in Mine #204, Elkhorn #3 Seam, at Jenkins, Kentucky, After the efficiency of roof bolting had been proven by the Consolidation Coal Co., this procedure was adopted by other companies throughout the state. In December 1954, approximately 46.4 percent of Kentucky's total production of coal from underground mines was obtained from roof-bolted areas. Statistics in this report will show the progress made in roof bolting during the six years, in addition to the roof bolting being done as of December 31, 1955. Significant progress has been made in the coal mines of Kentucky in reducing the roof-fall fatality, rates, during the past several years by adopting systemmatic roof bolting. The ground work by the Consolidation Coal Co, (Ky.) in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Mines was based upon the previous experience of the St. Joseph Lead. Cc, in its Southeastern Missouri Mines and The Tennessee Coal and Iron Division of the United States Steel Corporation. "The construction of mechanized tunnels in soft ground has evolved significantly over the last 20 years, especially in the control of the face pressure and the closure of the soil-lining void to reduce the induced settlements. On the other hand, several mechanisms of the TBM excavation cycle are still not taken into account for routine design calculations, such as the increment of water pressures in front of the tunnel face, the flow of excavation fluids around the shield, the dynamic equilibrium between the grout pressures and the excavation convergence, among others. This paper discusses specifically the issue of face pressures and how several mechanisms, which are routinely not considered, can be easily verified and incorporated into the state-of-practice of design. INTRODUCTION The stability of underground excavations is traditionally assessed through analytical solutions based on the lower bound theorem of plasticity (Atkinson and Potts 1977; Mühlhaus 1985) or the limit equilibrium method (Anagnostou and Kovári 1994; Messerli et al. 2010). These methodologies depend on the tunnel geometry, certain ground parameters and the support pressure. When conventional construction methods are used, the internal support pressure is an abstract representation of the combined effects of partial excavation, ground reinforcement, and the different support elements. The use of closed-face tunnel boring machines (TBM) changed this perspective, as the magnitude of pressures acting on the excavation boundary could be controlled in a more direct way. In front of the TBM the ground is excavated as the cutterhead rotates and the cutting tools scrape the ground from the tunnel face while additives are injected to condition the material. Water, polymers, bentonite, and foam can be used as additives under different conditions (Thewes et al. 2012). The loosened ground with additives, herein referred to as the mixture, flows through the openings at the cutterhead and into the excavation chamber. This mixture is kept pressurized to support the face."

"In the present work, we investigate the effects of roasting temperature and time on the transformation of the titanium (Ti)-bearing phase and magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAl2O4) phase in Ti-bearing electric arc furnace molten slag during the molten sodium hydroxide (NaOH) treatment process. With applied temperature of 700 °C for 60 min, and a mass ratio of Ti-bearing electric arc furnace slag to NaOH, or Rslag/NaOH, of 1:1.2, the conversion ratios of the Ti-bearing phase and the MgAl2O4 phase reached about 98.3 percent and 88.1 percent, respectively. Moreover, investigation of the reaction kinetics indicate that the conversion of these phases during the molten NaOH treatment process is a typical solid-liquid reaction, and it can be theoretically described by the unreacted shrinking core model. The conversion ratio of the Ti-bearing phase was found to be controlled by the chemical reaction step, with an apparent activation energy of 41.76 kJ/mol. The decomposition of the MgAl2O4 phase was found to be controlled by the surface chemical reaction in the early stage of 0 to 20 min from start of reaction, changing to diffusion control in the later stage of 20 to 60 min. The apparent activation energies of the process were determined as 55.88 and 22.72 kJ/mol, respectively.IntroductionChina has rich mineral resources of vanadium–titanium magnetite ore deposits, and the iron and steel industry in the country produces millions of tons of titanium (Ti)-bearing slag every year. The problem of how to dispose of the Ti-bearing slag has attracted much attention, and various approaches have been developed, including the acid process (Li et al., 2007; Zhang et al., 2011; Zhang and Nicol, 2010; Li et al., 2011), alkali fusion process (Han et al., 2012; Middlemas, Fang and Fan, 2013; Nayl, Awwad and Aly, 2009; Lasheen, 2008; Zhang, Qi and Zhang, 2009), carbonization and chlorination process (Liu et al., 2008; Tao et al., 2012; Fu et al., 2012; Liu, 2009), selective crystallization process (Lei and Xue, 2008; Li et al., 2011; Zhang et al., 2007a, 2007b). However, these processes have been beset by various functional, economical and ecological problems (Yu and Chen, 2010). With environmental protection regulations becoming increasingly rigorous, and demand growing for the comprehensive utilization of resources, the focus is on methods to treat Ti-bearing slag with high efficiency and mild reaction conditions (Nazari and Riahi, 2011; Wu et al., 2013)."

The production of crushed stone in the United States has exceeded 1.0 Gtpy since 1987. Eighty percent of the crushed stone produced is used in the aggregate industry, accounting for over half of the quantity of natural aggregate consumed in the United States. Approximately 718 of the crushed stone produced in 1989 was limestone and dolomite followed by granite, traprock, sandstone and quartzite, miscellaneous stone, marble, shell, calcareous marl, volcanic cinder and scoria, and slate in order of descending volume (Table 1). Of the remaining 20% crushed stone produced in the United States and not used as aggregate, 12% is used in the manufacture of cement which is an important construction material. Only 8% of crushed stone is used in specialty products not associated with the construction industry. Therefore, this chapter will concentrate on crushed stone as used in aggregates, with occasional reference to other uses or to chapters which discuss specific nonconstruction uses of crushed stone. Construction aggregates are hard, essentially inert materials suitable for being formed into a stable mass by the addition of cementing or binding materials that produce a concrete by compaction, or by natural weight to produce a road or foundation fill. Aggregates are usually from 80 to 100% of the material volume of the construction masses in which they are used. Conditions necessary for a rock deposit to be developed for construction crushed stone include: Quality-should pass rigid specifications for strength and durability; Quantity-adequate volume of rock is needed to have a production life of at least 10 years, preferably 20 or more years; Market-must have adequate market to support a new crushed stone operation; Transportation-transportation cost must be competitive for the intended market; Environmental-the impacts of mining, processing and transportation of crushed stone on the environment at or surrounding the mine site must be within acceptable limits; Permitability-mining, processing and transportation of crushed stone must usually be permitted by governing agency. The following discussion will touch upon all facets of crushed stone operations from the mineral deposit and its geology to technology, uses, economic factors and end with governmental regulations of mining crushed stone. The sections are not designed to answer all questions, but rather to be an introduction to the crushed stone industry. Where more information is required, The Aggregate Handbook by Barksdale (1991) is recommended as the best general source.

The one-dimensional mathematical model of unsteady-state heat conduction through semi-infinite homogeneous and isotropic airway walls with convective heat and moisture transfer between their wet or dry naked surfaces and mine air with time variable temperature and humidity has been developed on the basis of introduction of acceptable simplifications of description of heat and moisture transfer between rock mass and mine air. The analytical solutions for computation of the temperature distribution and surface temperature of the airway walls and floor and for calculation of water vapour pressure near the wet surfaces at given time are obtained by means of the model presented. The presented solutions are derived for general conditions and they could be easily adapted to the actual ones. Results of the model represent basis for balancing heat and moisture transfer between mine air and its surrounding in deep mines under time variable temperature and humidity of the air and enable us to solve complicated dynamic changes of mine air temperature and humidity in an airway system by relatively simple mathematical tools. INTRODUCTION The importance of unfavourable influences and the costs of condition arrangements increases with mine depth. Precision demands on the methods which predict the environmental condition changes and by which it is possible to optimize condition arragements are still increasing. Environmental conditions in deep mines are determined especially by flow velocity, barometric pressure, temperature, and humidity of mine air. Therefore new and more exact mathematical models of mine air flow through airway system and those of heat and moisture transfer between mine air and individual important sources of heat and moisture are developed. The paper presented deals with description and solution of problems of heat and moisture transfer between mine air and airway walls as the rock mass is one of the important heat and moisture sources in deep mines. There are several different approaches to the problem. In some models the moisture transfer between mine air and airway walls is not considered at all. In other models the moisture transfer is described only by certain empirical coefficients. Simultaneous heat and moisture transfer is described seldom. According to a 2000 NIOSH report, about 100 million rock anchors are installed annually in coal mines in the USA. Most coal mines have conditions that are conducive to corrosion of the rock anchor and ancillaries (such as plates), yet the effect of this on the performance of the anchors has not been adequately researched and its effects are not understood or quantified in the USA. There is considerable research into corrosion in civil engineering applications on surface and underground but the corrosion of coal mine rock anchors is not necessarily the same because: ? In underground civil structures, water ingress is usually stopped as part of the construction process. ? Many rock bolts in mines are only partially resin grouted leaving part of the reinforcing member exposed to corrosive conditions. All cable bolts in coal mines are only partially resin grouted. ? Even when mine bolts are fully grouted, shrinkage cracks occur and the rock stresses can change due to adjacent mining that can cause the resin column around the bolt to fracture further under external shear or tensile stresses. Most coal mines therefore have ideal conditions for bolt corrosion.

This paper describes practical applications of lineal" programming techniques to help in the planning of production, transportation and shipments at different coal mines. The models are being used by Cyprus Coal Company in eastern and western operations to plan coal production, economic dispatching and blending over variable time horizons. In addition, where a preparation plant exists, the models establish the amount of washing required to meet specific coal sales qualities. The emphasis on this paper is on model development and implementation together with a system to track coal flow and qualities, either raw from the mines to the loading facilities 01" processed through a preparation plant.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Granduc mine is situated on the west side of Granduc Mountain in the Leduc River area of north¬west British Columbia about 51 km (32 miles) north¬east of the town of Stewart. Entry is by means of a 16.6-km (10.3-mile) long haulage adit from the concentrator site at Tide Lake. The principal ore mineral is chalcopyrite. Ore mineralization varies from dis¬seminated to irregular semimassive stringers generally associated with highly folded and sheared biotite-rich sections of metasediments. The ore bodies vary in width from 3.6 m (12 ft) to over 18 m (60 ft) in a zone some 800 m (2600 ft) in length dipping at an average of 75° to the west and plunging steeply to the south. Capping varies in thickness from 0 to over 300 m (1000 ft). SELECTION OF MINING METHOD In the early stages of planning the primary require¬ments to be met by the mining method were: (1) suit¬ability to high output and productivity, (2) adaptability to mechanization in order to minimize operating costs, and (3) minimization of the costs and the development period for preproduction. Considering these, the selection of a mining method was narrowed to a choice be¬tween sublevel long-hole stoping or sublevel caving. A method utilizing backfill was ruled out as uneconomical, especially since mill tailings would not be readily available. At the time, the following facts about the ore body were recognized: (1) the average width of the ore body was 12 m (40 ft), (2) 30% of the stoping blocks were in areas of 6 m (20 ft) or less in width; (3) in many cases, ore zones were located in parallel lenses or were irregular in shape; (4) major faults were present in the hanging wall close to the ore, with minor faults within the different ore zones; and (5) the ore itself was lami¬nated with fractures and jointing crossing such bedding planes. Considering these factors, the two stoping meth¬ods were compared. Sublevel Open Stoping The characteristics of sublevel open stoping are: 1) It is generally not used for widths below 6 m (20 ft) since the ratio of waste development increases as level intervals are reduced to insure good control of long-hole drilling. 2) This method is used where ground is relatively competent. Otherwise more pillar support is required, increasing ore losses or mining costs with pillar recovery. 3) The method is not easily adaptable to parallel ore zones separated by relatively narrow waste bands. 4) Close control of pillar and stope design will per¬mit some degree of dilution control. Sublevel Caving Sublevel caving is characterized by the following: 1) The method can be used for a variety of ore widths, recognizing that 3 m (10 ft) in width may be an economical minimum. 2) It is particularly favorable where wall rock is weak. 3) The method has flexibility so that irregular ore bodies or parallel lenses can be mined. 4) The need to leave pillars for support is eliminated 5) Dilution and tonnage recovery are interrelated. With concern about the stability of the hanging wall and the geometry of the ore bodies, there was a growing favor to choose the sublevel caving method. However, this method was relatively new to Canadian mining practice. Teams were sent to Sweden to tour mines using sublevel caving and to study their methods and any extraction and dilution problems. The objective was to develop cost and performance data and ore recovery grades and tonnages for feasibility comparisons. Next, detailed mine plans were developed covering a three-year period using sublevel caving and sublevel open stoping. Extensive analyses of the development and production costs for each method were made. With sublevel caving, ore losses of 10% with a 20% dilution rate were used. The same ore loss was estimated for sublevel open stoping with dilution varying from 11 to 15%. As a result of these studies, the decision was made to use sublevel caving partly because slightly lower op¬erating costs, together with higher productivity, offset the adverse effects of higher dilution; and partly be¬cause, at the start, there would be less risk in being able to handle the ground, and the method offered more flexi¬bility. Open stoping was not ruled out for testing at a later date. It was recognized that some other method of mining would be required for mining the ore extensions below the glacier, where surface subsidence must be avoided. During the operating life of the mine, open stoping was tested in narrow width ore zones and found un¬satisfactory due to wall failure. A cut-and-fill stope, utilizing run-of-mine waste from development, was also operated on a trial basis. A sequence was finally estab¬lished that permitted ground control; however, produc¬tivity needed considerable improvement in order for open stoping to be considered as a sole alternative for mining below the main haulage level. At the termination of operations in June 1978 over 13 000 000 t (14,500,000 st) had been extracted from above the main haulage level at production rates varying from 3270 to 7250 t/d (4000 to 8000 stpd). Sublevel Caving Methods Two basic methods were used, transverse and longi¬tudinal. The transverse method was used mainly in the upper C ore body in widths greater than 18 m (60 ft), and occasionally as an alternative to the longitudinal method in localized areas where strike faulting inter¬fered with normal development. In-pit crushing and conveying of waste has been utilized in the mining industry for over 30 years. In recent years, innovations in crushing, conveying, and particularly waste and leach stacking technology have sparked a renewed interest in continuous haulage systems for large-scale open pit applications. A review of the advantages/disadvantages and operating techniques of crushers, feeders, conveyors, and stacking systems currently available is made. The paper examines some operations that are currently using large scale continuous haulage systems. Finally, a case study is presented that evaluates the application of a continuous waste haulage system in a large open pit mine in the Western United States, The case study includes a economic comparison with the existing truck haulage system.

The application of cutoffs during and after pit optimization is examined for a lower-grade multi-metallic copper deposit. Pit optimization requires calculation of the net revenue associated with each mining block, incorporating parameters such as metal prices, grades and expected recoveries, mining and processing costs, smelting and refining charges, and penalty element and royalty charges. Sensitivity analysis during pit optimization reveals which of these parameters have a significant effect on the total contained resource tonnage and total contained non-discounted revenue in the optimized pit. The cumulative effect of changing several of the more significant parameters is investigated. Application of a copper cutoff grade to a block inside the optimized pit could result in the less than optimal extraction of the resource. A block with copper grade below the applied cutoff could be economic due to the presence of other metals. Conversely, a higher copper grade block may be sub-economic. The relative merits of applying a copper grade cutoff, "equivalent grade" cutoff and dollar value per ton cutoff to blocks inside the optimum pit are discussed.

The Fence Lake Project is located in the Salt Lake coal field, an extension of the San Juan Basin. Geologic formations exposed in the Project area range in age from late Cretaceous to Quaternary. Coal is encountered in the Moreno Hill Formation (upper Cretaceous). Salt River Project (SRP) followed the basic textbook approach for the exploration, regional appraisal, detailed reconnaissance, detailed surface appraisal and three dimensional sampling (physical exploration). SRP is exploring this property as a potential fuel source for the Coronado Generating Station. Therefore, for the physical exploration stage, the quality sampling program was designed from a utility company viewpoint to determine possible impacts to the Station. Exploration drilling was completed in spring, 1982; September, 1982, and summer, 1984. Engineering, environmental, and land acquisition studies were added in the Summer, 1984 Program to more closely evaluate the potential Fence Lake Project coal supply option for the Coronado Generating Station. Studies, including drilling, are ongoing-at this time.

Introduction This section of the text presents a general review of the different types of concentrate marketing contracts. Too often the marketing strategy is ignored in the design phase of the project and the producer is left to the mercy of the buyer. Many items such as concentrate grade, impurity levels and moisture content of the concentrate my enhance, or severely restrict the producers ability to make a profit it. Close attention should be paid to the design of the concentrator which can improve the quality of the concentrates, thus the ability to increase the rider of potential buyers can be enhanced. Difficult at best, is the position of the miner who only has one outlet available for its production. Obviously, the trade offs must be evaluated. For example, concentrate grade vs recovery and grind/filtering capacity vs moisture of the concentrate all must be weighted against freight cost to a potential buyer. In addition, the above considerations must be weighed against the capital cost to the miner. This chapter is intended to highlight important articles that are included in short and long term agreements and to give a new miner/producer some insight into hat my or my not add value to the product. Unless the miner sells the product directly to a consumer such as a gold, or silver producer, or to a large enough operation that has a totally intergrated system to make a finished product, most miners are forced to sell to buyers who ultimately will refine and market the product. Types of Contract Agreements There are many types of contract agreements just as there are colors in the rainbow, however, most contracts fall into three basic categories. (1) Smelter Schedules: Designed for the small producer, the odd lot of concentrate, smelter flux and precious metal ore. Albeit custom smelters are becoming fever by the day, because of pollution control requirements and financial difficulties, most remaining custom smelters have a smelter schedule. A smelter schedule is a posted list of charges and conditions that the smelter will buy material from a seller. Smelter schedules exist for copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold (Handbook for Small Mining Enterprises, Montana Bureau of Mines). (2) Short Term Custom Contracts: Large mine producers frequently use Short Term Contracts where the seller has the buyer frame a contract that is tailored to the sellers’ production. Lead alloys function effectively as oxygen evolving anodes in copper SX-EW operations and are highly resistant to corrosion. The presence of organic from solvent extraction in the electrolyte seemed to enhance solution line attack. Laboratory tests showed that lead is soluble in D2EHPA, Acorga and LIX 984 to a limited, yet measurable degree. Lead alloys and various lead phases formed on the anode were tested to evaluate their effect on the corrosion process in organic media. Possible causes for anode corrosion and mechanisms responsible for their initiation will be discussed.

"The north segment of the Zizhi Tunnel that consists of twin tunnels was excavated at a shallow depth in soft ground using the Shallow Tunneling Method. Based on continuous field measurements, the development histories of surface settlement were analyzed first. The observed development process could be roughly divided into three stages and the influence of river was evidenced. Transverse and longitudinal surface settlements above the twin tunnels were then fitted with empirical models. The obtained trough width parameters in transverse and longitudinal direction (it and il) and the volume loss (VLs) were presented and discussed. Additionally, surface settlement was compared with the crown settlement. The relationship between surface and crown settlement behaved in two different ways inside and outside the river-affected region. The findings in this project give references for predicting surface settlements in similar tunneling condition. INTRODUCTION Nowadays tunnel construction has become a major way of utilizing underground space in many large cities. The ground deformation will be inevitably induced in the tunneling process. Engineers should always be careful about excessive deformation that may damage adjacent structures. For shallow tunnels, controlling ground deformation turns to be more risky. Since soil arching is not completely formed in the shallow tunneling, settlements can easily develop from tunnel crown to ground surface.A conventional tunneling method named Shallow Tunneling Method (STM) has been developed and widely applied to constructed shallow tunnels in China. The major difference between this method and the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is whether considering self-supporting capacity of surrounding ground or not. In order to reduce the disturbance of surrounding soils, several guidelines are highlighted in this method, including advanced pipe forepoles, strict grouting, short excavation length, strong support, quick closure and frequent measurements (Fang 2012). Nevertheless, the ground deformation is still hard to control and becomes a concerned problem, mainly because ground settlement has some regional features and largely depends on the detailed excavation methods (bench cut method, multiple heading method, etc.) and ground condition (sand, clay, decomposed rock, etc.)."

Infrastructures continue to age and drinking water supplies are becoming scarce in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California. Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. (FKCI) was engaged by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) to complete the River Supply Conduit Improvement Upper Reach—Unit 7 Project (RSC7). Two tunnel sections were bored using a 2.64 meter diameter Microtunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) and a 4.12 meter diameter Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (EPBTBM) to excavate approximately 3,733 meters (3.7 km) of tunnels through highly abrasive late-Pleistocene-age Quaternary alluvial deposits (Old Alluvium) and Holocene age Young Alluvium deposits above the water table. This paper discusses the economic zones of application for several different types of earthmoving equipment: dozers, wheel loaders in load-and-carry applications, wheel tractor scrapers, articulated trucks, rigid-frame trucks and wagons. Only the medium to large pieces of equipment were considered. From this chart (Figure 1), you can see the size range, in tons of carrying capacity, of Caterpillar equipment and the specific models analyzed.
