The day after I reached New York, on January 30th, John Ryan of Anaconda told me where they wanted me to go. Late in 1916 the Russian Czar, desperate for money and supplies with which to carry on his unhappy share In the first World War, sent emissaries to the United States to see if our great mining companies might be interested in trying to find mines and to bring them to production in the millions of acres of the Imperial Estates in Russia and Siberia. It looked like a long chance as no one knew whether or where there might be important ore bodies. Even if they found them it might be a hopeless task to equip them under wartime conditions But the American copper companies had plenty of money and they were used to taking risks. They made a supersecret agreement with the Czar's deputies to send an exploring expedition to Russia at once I never learned the names of the other companies but Anaconda was to man- age the venture. Horace Winchell, then the leading mine geologist In the United States, was to be in charge of operations. Charles Janin, an eminent placer and dredge expert, was to study chances for producing gold and platinum. Though at 33 years of age I was much younger than the others, I was chosen to hunt for copper and other valuable metals. Charles Boynton, a business man who had lived in Russia and had married an attractive Russian woman, was to join the party and carry on any necessary financial or diplomatic affairs. He had gone on ahead to arrange for our reception Finally a graduate student from Ann Arbor named Steinberg was to go along as Interpreter. We soon found out that if his Russian was no better than his English his interpretlng couldn't be trusted too much I knew nothing about the millions of square miles In Russia and Siberia, and even less about what mineral deposits might be found, but I was delighted at the prospect. This paper describes the innovative procedures employed during the construction of 3 deep shafts within the confines of New York City. The shafts, which varied in diameter from 1.8m (6ft) to 7.3m (24ft) and had an overall depth of 199m (650ft), were excavated by both mechanical and conventional methods. These were subsequently concrete lined, clad steel riser pipes installed and associated surface structures were constructed. Tricky surface rock blasting coupled with the unearthing of unexpected obstructions caused constant uncertainty during the excavation phase. In addition, the necessity of handling men and material in restricted yet deep openings required the development of a safer and more productive shaft construction procedure.

The importance of coal as the major energy source has led to wider interest in the recovery of waste coal fines as a usable product. An additional incentive for fine coal recovery has been the increased emphasis on environ- mental pollution control and conservation of the nation's natural resources, Accordingly, a series of studies and tests were performed to investigate the feasibility of the recovery, concentration, balling and pelletizing of coal fines as a marketable adjunct to existing mining and beneficiation operations. These studies were conducted at the existing operations of the Eastern Coal Corporation at Stone, Kentucky, and the Metallurgical Laboratory of Arthur G. McKee & Company in Cleveland, Ohio. The purpose of the investigations was to recover the fines from the effluent waste waters of an existing preparation plant and transform them into a high carbon, low sulfur and ash product capable of being handled with a minimum of degradation and dusting problems. The fines were relatively high in ash content prior to processing, and flotation pretreatment served a combined function of beneficiation, recovery and water clarification, The minus 28 mesh coal concentrate containing 40 to 45 percent minus 325 mesh size material had an ash content varying between 5 and 7 percent and a sulfur content of less than 0.5 percent. Chemical and size analyses of the effluent and concentrated fines are presented in Table I for comparison.

The growth of networks of shear fractures is explored in a series of experiments with samples of wet clay. The samples are subjected to plane strain deformation in a rigid apparatus. The individual fractures observed on the upper surface of the clay samples grow longer by three mechanisms: in-plane propagation, off-plane propagation and coalescence. New, active fractures cut and displace older, less active ones. The lengths of individual fractures display lognormal distribution in most cases and power distribution in fewer. The calculated length parameters in the experiments, as well as in three field cases discussed here, suggest that the fundamental parameters in fracture analysis are the normalized cumulative length and the length of the shortest fracture measured.

Gold concentrates are produced at many mines by a variety of centrifugal and gravity machines, such as Knelson and Falcon concentrators, however the subsequent recovery of gold is relatively inefficient and subject to security problems. The InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) offers a new method to recover over 95% of gold in concentrates using a simple, secure leaching process. The InLine Leach Reactor is of particular benefit in treating slow or difficult leaching sulphide concentrates and its performance can be reliably predicted from simple laboratory tests. The InLine Leach Reactor is now successfully operating in two gold mines providing benefits of high gold recovery, low operating costs, high security and ease of operation.

The redox reactions that occur on pyrrhotite and pentlandite in contact with oxygenated deionized water were examined using voltammetry. Reactions were put forward in which both minerals were progressively hydroxylated to form thermodynamically metastable surface intermediate products. These intermediates were modelled as metal deficient sulphides where a sulphurous layer was coordinated onto the remaining metal sites via polysulphides. Prior to hydroxylation pentlandite exhibited changes in the surface stoichiometry which were not related to pH effects. The formation of polysuiphide-sulphur intermediates were believed to promote collectorless; flotability for the two minerals. Microflotation tests (0.3 g samples) verified that the surface potential and particle size affected the flotation response, excessive oxidation inhibiting the minerals' flotability. Larger scale tests using ore samples (30 g) confirmed that the extent of pulp oxidation, particle size distribution and the presence of frothers affected the flotation response, the findings being in accordance with the postulated model for the hydrophobic species generated on the pentlandite and pyrrhotite surfaces.

At the MacIntyre Development of the Titanium Division of National Lead Company a magnetite-ilmenite ore together with gabbro-anorthosite waste is mined from an open pit by shovels and trucks. The ore from the pits is trucked to ore stockpiles for blending ahead of the crusher and to free the mine from crusher delivery schedules. The ore stockpiles are blended to yield a 16.5 to 17.0 % TiO, crusher feed. This requires mining on an assay cut-off rather than a visual grade cut-off. Highly mineralized ore runs from 20 plus % TiO2 and 30 plus % Fe to 15 % TiO2 and 40 plus % Fe as the ratio of ilmenite to magnetite changes. There are three major ore types in the present pit with magnetite ratios varying from about one to one up to three times as much magnetite as ilmenite. Ilmenite and magnetite together liberate from gangue down to about 10 mesh and this is the basis of the magnetic cobbing. Below 10 mesh the ilmenite and magnetite start to separate and ore cobbing pulleys will not hold the ilmenite.

The Florida Peninsula has existed as a part of a much broader plateau, since at least the Early Cretaceous. This plateau, the Floridan Plateau, now consists of the present peninsula and a broad submerged shelf of equivalent size extending the length of the state and out into the Gulf of Mexico. Florida Peninsula was separated from the mainland United States by a negative area called the Suwannee Straits. To the south of this feature existed an environment similar to today?s Bahamo Banks where very pure calcium and magnesium carbonates with associated evaporites were deposited. Thus the Eocene and Oligocene contain little or no quartz sand or clay minerals except in the Panhandle west of the Suwannee Straits where some clastics were contributed by rivers from the north.

INTRODUCTION Located on the Colorado River on the Nevada-Arizona border about 56 km (35 miles) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada, Hoover Dam is a gravity arch dam 221 m (726') high for electric power generation and water supply. The head waters of the dam form a large reservoir, Lake Mead. The dam is equipped with two emergency spillways, one in the Nevada abutment and one in the Arizona abutment. Both spillways which are concrete lined and 15.25 m (50') in diameter, were intended for use only if Lake Mead is full and incoming flow of the Colorado River exceeds the discharge capacity of the turbines and regular bypass conduits. In the spring of 1984, a combination of rain and unusually rapid snow melt required the opening of the spillways for only the second time in the 50 year history of the dam. As in the previous use in 1942, the massive discharge of water through the tunnels resulted in severe damage to the concrete Linings of both tunnels. This damage is the result of cavitation which occurs as the discharge water flows at very high velocities over minor irregularities in the concrete lining. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has long been aware of the cavitation effect which occurs during these high volume discharges and has been studying solutions. One solution to the problem is to induce air bubbles into the flowing water to eliminate the vacuum associated with cavitation. This solution had been implemented at Yellowtail, Flaming Gorge, Blue Mesa, and Glen Canyon dams by constructing an aeration slot in the inclined portion of their spillway tunnels. Since the spillways of Hoover Dam were already in need of repair, the BUREC decided to construct similar facilities in each of the two 15.25 m (50') diameter spillways coincidental with the other repairs required.

INTRODUCTION Geotechnical models, particularly those based on the finite element method, have been available to aid in en¬gineering design of underground mining excavations for over ten years. Despite this fact there are remarkably few cases of their use in mine design documented in the literature. It is therefore to be anticipated that many potential users of these models are relatively unaware of their capabilities and limitations and also of the form and detail of geotechnical data needed for their success¬ful application. This subsection attempts to address this problem by discussing the different types of numerical models now available and by noting how some of them have been used to study a variety of problems associated with underground mining. The subsection concludes by discussing the applica¬tion of the displacement discontinuity method to the de¬sign of possible mining systems for the copper-nickel deposits of northeastern Minnesota. The object of the analyses, which were nonsite specific, was to determine the significance of geotechnical parameters, such as ini¬tial stress and rock structure, on the stability of under¬ground excavations and hence to provide guidance for future geotechnical investigation. NUMERICAL MODELS In the geomechanical design of underground mining openings, use is made of numerical models that repre¬sent or simulate the large-scale mechanical behavior of rock. There has been less interest in analysis involving fluid flow and heat transfer, but with increasing interest in such areas as in-situ retorting and solution mining it is likely that there will be a growing need for numerical models embracing and coupling all three physical proc¬esses. However, the emphasis in this subsection will be on mechanical behavior. Models which simulate such behavior will be divided into two groups: continuum models and discontinuum models. These will be dis¬cussed in turn in order that some insight into alternative solution strategies and their merits may be gained. Continuum Models Almost all geomechanical numerical models must be classed as continuum models even though particular computer codes incorporate special provisions for rep¬resenting discontinuities such as faults, bedding planes, or joints. They are continuum models because they pro¬vide solutions for cases where material behavior is governed by the differential equations of continuum mechanics. Two basic solution strategies for such equa¬tions may be identified immediately: the differential ap¬proach and the integral approach. In the differential approach a means of approximating the differential equations over the entire region of interest is sought. In the integral approach use is made of fundamental solutions from continuum mechanics, and these are used to construct a solution to the whole problem, making approximations only on the boundaries of the region of interest. The several differential and integral methods are identified in Table 1. Differential Methods: Problems in continuum me¬chanics involve the solution of three types of partial differential equations. Two of these govern the behavior in so-called initial value problems, in which variables change both in time and in space. Examples of such problems include nonsteady heat transfer and fluid flow, and stress wave propagation. The last type of partial differential equation governs the behavior in boundary value problems. In these, variation is in space but not in time. Solution of initial value problems may be achieved in two significantly different methods: implicit and ex¬plicit. The differences between these two methods will be illustrated by considering a very simple initial value problem, that of one-dimensional heat diffusion. The equation governing this process may be written as: [ ] where T is temperature, K is thermal conductivity, p is density, c is specific heat, t is time, and x is the spacial coordinate. In finite difference form this equation might be written as: [ ] where the superscripts refer to the time and the sub¬scripts to the spacial location. Several solution strategies for this equation have been used. Two important ones may be illustrated very simply by discussing the signifi¬cance of the superscript * on the right-hand side of the equation. If i + 1 is substituted for * then the second derivative of the temperature with respect to distance is evaluated at the end of the next time step (using tem¬peratures not already known). Such an approach leads to a set of equations involving unknown temperatures and a solution procedure which is referred to as being implicit. The important characteristic of the implicit procedure is that it leads to a set of equations that must be solved for each time at which the temperature dis¬tribution is required. On October 27, 1972, ground was broken for the first section of the Second Avenue Subway, a two track underground rail system that was to extend from the south end of Manhattan at Broad Street, north to the Harlem River at 126th Street, a distance of eight miles. This ground breaking was the culmination of 67 years of planning for an east side subway in Manhattan. Following the successful opening of New York City's first subway on October 1904 there was a mass planning for additional subways throughout the City. In 1905 approval was requested of the Board of Estimate for a First Avenue route and Third Avenue route. The Third Avenue route was approved but when action was not taken to start construction, the approval in accordance with the conditions under which it was given was withdrawn. Further reports and plans for an east side subway, usually to be constructed on Third Avenue, were issued in 1920, in 1922, in 1924, etc. Those of us who had worked on the Sixth and Eighth Avenue subways in the thirites and early forties left to join the armed services of World War II in the expectation that we would return and start work on designing and constructing that east side subway. The reason that much of the thrust in those years was to construct on Third Avenue was that there was a Third Avenue "EL" and business interests of the City were in favor of its demolition. This demolition was accomplished in 1955 so one of the incentives to construct on Third Avenue was removed; but an east side subway was always part of the master plan of the City.

During subsidence, the ground surface may settle, change slope, change curvature, go into tension, and/or go into compression. In response to these ground movements, buildings and buried utilities in the subsidence area may settle, tilt, bend, distort, and sustain extension, compression and/or torsion. In order to develop measures to protect existing structures and utilities, or to design new structures and utilities to withstand potential movements in areas of subsidence, it is necessary to understand the interaction between the ground and the building or buried the utility. This paper reviews subsidence-induced ground movements, how these ground movements are transmitted to and accommodated by buildings and buried pipelines, and how these structures may alter ground movements relative to free field subsidence-induced ground movements.

The heat of immersion of coals in different immersional liquids is measured as a function of particle size and moisture content. Decrease in particle size shows a concomitant increase in the heat of immersion. The heat of immersion is dependent upon the nature of immersional fluids. In addition the nature of moisture present in coal influences the heat of immersion.

The subjects to be examined in my portion of the session entitled "Technology of Aluminum.. Recovery" will be twofold. 1. Economics of the basic aluminum economy--supply-demand-price. 2. Specifications of aluminum products produced from municipal waste--from the secondary aluminum standpoint. It is the object of this speech to first impress everyone with the excellent long-run markets for the aluminum products from municipal waste and then to acquaint everyone with the rather liberal scrap specifications that the recycling industry can tolerate. The most important statement that can be made about the recycling of aluminum is that it is now and will be an economic necessity. This is true far many reasons; one which hit the headlines recently was Interior Secretary Rogers Morton's statement "Third-world nations could use mineral wealth not to achieve political ends but to jack up economic positions. The result could be sky-rocketing prices and dwindling supplies on world markets." There is no reason why the group of countries that supplies most of our bauxite can't get together the way oil-producing countries got together on the price of oil. (Jamaica and Surinam, are original sources of two-thirds of the aluminum used in the United States.) The worry is not so much that we will end up without the basic raw material but rather that the price might be so high that we could not afford it. So much for the blackmail reason for recycling aluminum; the supply and demand picture in both the primary and recycling sectors of the aluminum economy is far more meaningful.

Bituminous coal dust was repeatedly placed into one lung lobe of anesthetized Macaca nemestrina monkeys using a flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope. Radiographs taken at 15 day intervals showed a focal radiographic density after 90 days time when a total of 1 gram of dust had been instilled. The radiographic density progressed slightly in size until 12 months by which time 3 grams of dust had been instilled and the animals were euthanized. At necropsy, the only significant gross lesion detected was the focal black pulmonary lesion located at the dust instillation site. Histologically, the lesion was composed of coal dust laden macrophages located primarily within interstitial tissue and interspersed with a slight amount of reticulum and connective tissue fibers. The distribution of coal dust was limited to the instillation site in the right caudal lung lobe based on radiographic, gross and histologic examination. Bronchoalveolar lavage of both right and left caudal lung lobes was performed 8 times during the 12 month long experiments without significant complications. More macrophages were found in lavage fluid from the right lung than the left, and most macrophages from right lung contained coal dust particles. Based upon a limited physical examination and complete blood count at 15 day intervals the animals remained normal during the experiment. We conclude that the primate lung's response to focal experimental bituminous coal dust resulted in a marked focal increase in pulmonary alveolar macrophages, which can be recovered regularly in high numbers by bronchoalveolar lavage. The model described has significant potential for investigating the pathogenesis of various respirable dust-induced pneumoconioses, for evaluation of new therapeutic approaches, and for refining experimental and clinical diagnostic applications of bronchoalveolar lavage. Roasting of refractory gold ores has the primary goal of oxidizing sulfides and organics to improve gold recoveries prior to leaching. Commercial installations currently utilize bubbling and circulating fluidized beds. The principle of flash roasting is aimed at a more cost effective method of whole ore roasting for large throughput applications. Results of pilot plant testing and scale up to commercial design will be discussed in further detail in this paper.

The ninth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the SME Annual Conference & Expo in Minneapolis, MN. A total of 33 students presented their work at the contest. The competition began in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes. The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the contest. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and, as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. As in past years, there are separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates, and the prizes are designated accordingly. At the graduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third through seventh $200 each, and all others $125 each. At the undergraduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third place $250, and all others $125 each.

During the last decade or so great advances were made in the solvent extraction, electro winning technologies. They, combined with heap leaching, made it viable to exploit large, relatively low grade oxide copper deposits. The El Abra mine is a good example for such a deposit. Situated in Northern Chile at an elevation of about 4000m (14000 feet), 70 krn north of Calama, the El Abra deposit has been known for many years. In the early 1990's Codelco decided to sell a major holding in the deposit to international mining companies. After lengthy negotiations Cyprus Minerals finalized in June 1994 the purchase of 51% of the deposit with Codelco retaining the balance. lance. Already in 1993 Cyprus and the engineer on the project, began discussions with international materials handling companies with regards to the materials handling system required for the project. These early discussions were considered critical for this fast track project. Immediately after the notice to proceed with the project, several companies were invited to submit competitive conceptual proposals for that portion of the material handling system which was to transport crushed and treated ore from the plant to the leach pad and build the leaching heaps at a rate of up to 150 000 tons per day. A supplier was selected. Additional studies were made for the conveyor system from the mine to the fine crushing plant. Due to the extremely rugged terrain and high altitude at the mine, a decision was made to locate the plant and the leaching operations 15 km east of the mine at an elevation of 3400m. In July 1994 the supplier started the conceptual engineering with a design team at the engineer's San Francisco office. The undertaking was unique in the sense that the supplier's engineering team was integrated into the project for the duration of the conceptual engineering. The open and continuous communication greatly contributed to the success of the design work.

Until recently, the general expectation among mining compa­nies and financial analysts has been that the price of gold would remain on a generally upward slope. The recent drop in the price of gold has caused many people to re-think the issue. Of course, the price of gold is singularly difficult to predict, so it is difficult to tell which concept is correct. In the present financial situation, however, many junior gold companies are faced with the reality that money is hard to raise, and many senior gold companies find that they are facing a period of corporate losses even though they own solidly producing mines, As engineering consultants, Kappes, Cassiday has recently received several requests to review conventional milling projects to see if heap leaching is a more viable option. In regard to straight financial criteria such as return on investment and net present value, the question is usually fairly easy to answer. However, corporate decisions must often be based on less definable criteria. For instance, new stock issues tend to be more successful if they are larger, which tends to favor milling operations over heap leaches. The corporate issues are often subjective and difficult to generalize about, so I will con­centrate in this paper on a few financial concepts.
