Very little has been published about Cia de Minas Buena­ventura. Don Alberto Benavides Quintana, now in his seventies, founded the company in 1953. This venerable gentleman is a Doyon of the Peruvian mining industry and more has been known about him than about his company. Buenaventura is a highly profitable gold producer with excellent potential to expand gold production in joint ventures with Newmont, Southern Peru Copper (ASARCO), and BRGM as well by developing their own new gold mines. On September 15, The Wall Street Journal published an article titled "Peru's Big Rebound Sets Off Foreign Investors' Enthusiasm."

"In recent years, much has been said and written on Lake Superior ores, giving the impression that the quality of the ore is deteriorating in grade and that the reserve of high grade ore is rapidly being depleted. Average analyses of ore produced in this district since 1902 show that the average quality has been practically uniform since 1910, and now closely approximates the average for the total reserves of merchantable ore.The accompanying tables and charts show the average analyses for the past ten years, weighted according to tonnage: The chart above shows graphically the average natural iron content for the old range, Mesabi, and grand total Lake Superior ore shipments since 1902.During the last ten years the decrease in iron content for shipments from all ranges except the Menominee was only' .05 of 1 per cent, while for the Menominee ores there was an increase of .052 of 1 per cent. These tabulations and the chart prove that the average quality of the total annual production of iron ore from the Lake Superior district is uniform. Mining men of the district know that all of the merchantable ores of every ore body are being mined out cleanly, and therefore the present average iron ore content of total annual shipments from the district may be expected to continue as long as the present merchantable ore reserves last. There is no logical reason to expect a decrease in the average iron content. Furnaces require ore of definite quality, and if this quality of ore cannot be produced from the natural ore bodies, it must be produced by mechanical means—that is, by concentration of low grade ores or iron formation."

Calaverite is a gold telluride species, with the composition, AuTe2. Calaverite is usually characterized by an exceedingly slow dissolution rate in a cyanide solution. Cyanidation of a slurry containing synthetic calaverite (P90 of 10 microns) was studied to determine the leaching kinetics and surface reactions. Alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, lead nitrate and sulphide minerals (pyrite and chalcopyrite) were among the parameters evaluated. The reaction products at the surface of calaverite were documented using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. High lime concentration with lead nitrate and injection of oxygen produced the fastest leaching rates. New gold leaching mechanisms were identified which appeared to be related to the parameters selected.

The primary reason pigments are used in plastics is to impart a desired color to the plastic. Color is one of the more important assign considerations associated with today's market oriented society. Secondary reasons for adding pigments to plastics include: 1. Improved UV stability 2. Enhancement to selected physical properties 3. Changes in optical properties Pigments may be used at loadings as high as 20% or as low as .001%. Generally the loading levels are between 0.2% and 2.0%. Pigments may be added to the plastic either by the manufacturer of the plastic, or by the user of the plastic. If the customer buys material that is already colored, it is referred to as "pre-colored". If the customer buys uncolored plastic and adds colorants, the process is referred to as "in-house" coloring.

The Park City District, one of three major mining districts in Utah, is located approximately 20 miles southeast of Salt Lake City on the eastern slope of the Wasatch Mountains. The district has been in near continuous production since 1869. Production has been sustained from exceptionally long bedded replacement ore bodies in the Thaynes, Park City, and Humbug formations and also from several major veins. The heap leaching process has developed into a low-cost method for recovering copper, gold and silver from large and small deposits of low-grade ore. The earliest known heap leaching process with chemicals occurred in about 1752 and is attributed to Spanish miners percolating acid solutions through large heaps of oxide copper ore on the banks of the Rio Tinto (Ran Zyl, et al., 1988). In 1969, US Bureau of Mines research¬ers proposed the use of dilute alkaline cyanide solutions as a low-cost means for recovering gold values from low-grade ore containing micrometer-sized particles of gold (Miners News, 1991). The modern-day heap leaching process typically involves the percolation of leach solutions through controlled lifts of stacked, low-grade ore (crushed, aggomerated or run-of-mine) in a heap for chemical extraction of precious and base metals into solution (Fig. 1). The enriched (pregnant) solution is collected by gravity flow in lined basins, sumps and ponds for processing and recovery of the target metals (copper, gold and silver). The barren solution from the recovery facilities is recirculated to the heap, along with chemical reagents and makeup water, for containment of all process solutions in an enclosed and environmentally sound system. This involves the use of low-permeability liner systems beneath the heap leach stacks to maximize solution recovery and protect the underlying ground water (Fig. 1). This article discusses the typical heap leach liner systems currently used by mining companies in North America. The most successful heap leach pad liner systems from past precious metal operations generally include an underlying, low-permeability soil bedding material; a geomembrane liner, and an overlying protective cover fill.

Large roof outbursts began occurring in November 1986 at Domtar's Sifto Salt Mine in Goderich, Ontario, Canada, working the bedded Salina A-2 Salt unit. The outbursts, measuring about 13-20 m in diameter, released high concentrations of methane from cavities that extended into carbonate roof units. Spontaneous ignitions of methane gas during an outburst seriously burned a mine technician. The Canadian Ministry of Labour contacted the U.S. Bureau of Mines for technical assistance to aid in mine managements1 efforts in alleviating the problem. Initial gas content determinations of salt samples from the outbursts by acoustic test methodology revealed no methane enrichment. In- mine core drilling and subsequent methane content testing indicates the main source of methane in overlying roof units. Drilling the roof units demonstrated the potential of draining methane from areas showing signs of impending outbursting and alleviating the danger. Three mechanisms are considered the most likely means by which methane was introduced to the mine environment. These are (1) hydrocarbon gases released from brines, (2) gas transport along horizontal bedding planes or gas accumulations in bedding separations, and (3) mining-induced fracturing. The abundance of higher hydrocarbons in gas yielded by non-evaporite rock samples from the Goderich mine may be indicative of a former association with liquid petroleum.

Geologic activities of the Department relate to planning, construction, and operation of water projects, supervision of the safety of over 900 dams under state jurisdiction, and investigation and control of ground water supply. The Department is engineering oriented, and the role of the geologist is to assist with the solution of engineering problems. Pyrrhotite (FeS1+x ,0<x<0.15) is an iron sulfide which is considered to be a pest in carbon-in-pulp/ leach (CIP/L) gold processing [l].The perceived influence of pyrrhotite on gold processing by CIP/L is a competing consumption of 02 and CN­as the pyrrhotite dissolves by oxidation [1,2]. The few studies of the oxidation chemistry, kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation ofpyrrhotite are reviewed in detail elsewhere [3].There is broad agreement that the surface of pyrrhotite is very rapidly oxidized to form a thin (e.g. 10 nm) ferric hydroxy-oxide layer which overlays an iron-deficient sulfide lattice covering the original pyrrhotite. A trend towards the independent verification of sustainable development reporting and assessment using third party certification can be discerned in the global minerals industry. Various codes that provide for the third party assessment and certification of performance against a range of externally developed sustainability indicators are being adopted by minerals companies, and there is also considerable activity in the broader area of third party assurance. Using a sociological approach, this paper examines the reasons why third party certification schemes are appearing in the minerals industry to address sustainable development imperatives in preference to other forms of regulation, and considers the broader implications of this trend. Data are drawn from a series of qualitative, in-depth interviews conducted with some of the key players in the development and adoption of certification schemes in the minerals industry, with executive managers of a range of large mining corporations, with representatives of global non-governmental organizations that are active in mining issues, and with government officers responsible for the regulation of mining corporations in Australia. Factors responsible for the emergence of the new certification schemes include: increasing demands from stakeholders for greater credibility in reporting against sustainable development indicators; broader contextual factors including globalization and neoliberal policies; and issues relating to trust and risk. Using insights from our research, and the work of others in this field, we identify some of the critical features of a credible third party certification scheme, and note some of the challenges for the design and implementation of such schemes. We conclude by discussing some of the broader implications of third party certification as an emerging form of regulation in the minerals industry.

A study has been made of the reaction mechanisms occurring during the salt-roast process to form water-soluble sodium vanadate compounds from the vanadium oxide compounds present in vanadium-bearing ores and concentrates. Two reactions have been identified, either of which lead to water-soluble compounds--oxidation of sodium chloride by water vapor and. oxidation of sodium chloride by oxygen. The former reaction has been found to be predominant in the salt-roast process. A kinetic treatment of the data has shown that for the formation of sodium metavanadate the rate-controlling step in the reaction, in which sodium chloride is oxidized by water vapor is the decomposition of a species containing water and sodiumm chloride, on the surface at the gas-solid interface. For the formation of sodium pyrovanadate, the rate-controlling step is the decomposition of a species containing water and sodium metavaradate on the surface. The transportation of water through the system, perhaps as a sodium chloride-water complex or a sodium metavanadate-water complex, and the actual chemical reaction are relatively fast compared to the initial surface decomposition step. A similar treatment on the data for the oxidation, of sodium chloride by oxygen has shown that the rate-controlling step, is the actual transportation of oxygen from the gas-solid interface to the reactive site. This transportation is by a sequence of two diffusion processes. Transportation during the early stages of the reaction is by the diffusion of oxygen through a continuous layer of reaction product. After, the first few minutes of reaction time a second diffusion process begins and is continuous for the remainder of the reaction. This second diffusion process involves the diffusion of oxygen, through a layer of reaction product that has developed voids around which the oxygen must diffuse. The hindering, nature of this latter process causes the rate of transportation of oxygen to the reaction site to be considerably slower than by the simple diffusion mechanism initially followed. A thermodynamic treatment of the data has shown that the energy of activation for the decomposition of the water-sodium chloride species on the surface is -12.1 Kcal. per mole. For the decomposition of the water-sodium metavanadate species on the surface&apos; the energy of activation is -15.1 Kcal. per mole. The results of this study indicate the limiting mechanisms of the basic reactions occurring during the salt-roast process. These results suggest what variables should be examined in applying this information to actual plant operations.

The Olympias arsenical pyrite concentrate assaying 25 g/t Au, 40% S, 40% Fe and 12% As is highly refractory in nature; an oxidation pretreatment step is required to liberate gold and render it amenable to cyanidation. In the present study mineralogical analysis techniques including Image Analysis, SEM, EPMA, SIMS, Mossbauer, ICP/MS, etc., have been employed in order to investigate the mode of gold occurrence within the Olympias pyrites. Bacterial oxidation was used as a case pretreatment route and bacterially leached products were examined under SEM. The mineralogical observations and the relevant metallurgical and cyanidation test data were combined to establish a correlation between the mineralogical characteristics of the raw and oxidised products and conditions prevailing over the oxidative pretreatment step and the gold liberation achieved.

INTRODUCTION The topic of the paper is to discuss the use of micro computers in the construction industry. I will first discuss the present situation of the PCs in our industry followed by a discussion how Guy. F. Atkinson has integrated the PCs into it&apos;s organization. I will close with some general comments that any organization should review in order to enhance the use of their PCs both at the job sites and home office locations. PRESENT SITUATION OF THE PCs IN OUR INDUSTRY Today, the possible number of combinations that can be obtained when bringing together the available models of PCs, with their peripherals and software, is astronomical. With this array of equipment that can be bought, plus the new and possibly better equipment that is being put on the market almost daily, it is indeed a very difficult task for an organization to know how to invest its money in computer equipment. At the job sites, the work is fast paced with little time available to fully learn what the PCs can do to help with the required paperwork. I am still waiting for the day when someone has to tell the superintendent at the job site that he cannot start pouring concrete or shoot the next round because no one can get the computer to work.

Anglo-Rouyn Mines Limited, managed by Rio Algom Mines Limited is a subsidiary of the British-based Rio Tinto-Zinc Corporation Limited. This mining operation is situated in Northern Saskatchewan, 250 miles north of Saskatoon and represents the first base-metal mine of any importance served by this relatively new mining province. The outcrop of Copper-bearing Chalcopyrite was first discovered by prospectors in 1915, but was not mined until 1965 due to the absence of any form of road into the area prior to this latter date. The mine, mill and concentrator were designed to handle 900 tons per day of comparatively hard, abrasive ore containing chalcopyrite with traces of gold and silver. The flow sheet, Figure 1, is, we believe, elementary, designed with low cost in mind and utilises much old equipment from closed¬-down mines. Due to some difficulty in attaining the designed grinding capacity, changes were made in the crusher circuit. This, unfortunately, lowered the crushing rate too much. A series of changes have taken place to re-establish the original crusher capacity of better than 100 tons per hour. In the quest for a better recovery certain modifications have been tested in the concentrator circuit. These steps are discussed in minor detail.

Arseno Processing Ltd. has developed process technology for the extraction of gold from refractory ores and concentrates. These ores, which do not respond to conventional extraction processes, are rapidly becoming the primary targets for mining companies wishing to become significant gold producers. It has recently been estimated that by the mid 1990's, the annual gold production from the Pacific Basin Epithermal Arc in southeast Asia could be as high as 550 tonnes. Within this area the Porgera deposit under development by Placer, Renison and MIM, and the Lihir Island deposit under development by Kennecott have been shown to be refractory and require pretreatment before the gold can be extracted. The additional deposits which are now starting to be developed in this area are also expected to require such pretreatment. The Arseno process promises to be an economical pretreatment for these ores and to result in the maximum achievable gold recovery. Numerous refractory deposits are also known in Australia, North America, China and other parts of the world. Samples from many deposits throughout the world have been tested using the Arseno process conditions and the consistently successful results have demonstrated its widespread application. The samples which have been tested include ores in which the gold is locked in pyrite, marcasite or arsenopyrite. The process is insensitive to the sulphur content of the feed. Feed materials containing from 1 % to 50% sulphur have been tested successfully with the process. In the Arseno refractory gold process, sulphide minerals are dissolved so that the contained gold becomes accessible for subs7qu7nt gold recovery. This gold recovery is achieved by cyamdat1on of the process residue. For many of the materials which have been tested, gold extractions in excess of 95% have been achieved.

Investment in mining and related process facilities will be more costly and complex in the 1980s than ever before. Interest rates and inflation are soaring; regulations are expanding; and in order to achieve economies of scale, plant facilities and mines are getting larger. As the pace quickens, the time/cost circuit closes around the resource owner or developer. Larger modern projects cost more money and take more time to build. The longer it takes to bring a project onstream, the more it costs in interest, escalation, and lost production. One solution to the time/cost squeeze is to take advantage of systems developed by major contractors serving the mining industry. These contractors have been serving clients in planning and executing large and small projects for many years. They have developed systems which, if applied at an early point in the project&apos;s life, can be a significant benefit in development of mineral resources. The systems involve performance of feasibility studies, economic evaluations, and the project installation itself. First the Feasibility Study Feasibility studies can minimize risk through systematic evaluations while progressing toward the ultimate objective-an operating plant. Normally, studies are initiated with a minimum amount of specific information and a maximum number of as¬sumptions. Through the course of the study program, assumptions are continuously confirmed, refined, or rejected by facts until a sound basis for decision is available. High on the list of cost effective tools for evaluation is the use of a geostatistically derived sampling program that provides a highly accurate ore reserve estimate for economic evaluation. When a predetermined sample of data from the drilling program and bench-scale or pilot-plant tests are received, a detailed feasibility study may be started. INTRODUCTION The term, chelate, from the Greek for &apos;claw,&apos; has its origin in the pincer-like representation of more than one atom of a single ligand bonded to the same metal atom, forming a ring-like structure. Depending on how many attachments exist on the sphere of coordination around the metal ion, ligands are referred to as bidentate, tridentate, tetradentate, pentadentate and hexadentate According to Calvin and Martell (1952) and Somasundaran and Nagaraj (1984), chelating agents must contain suitable functional groups, and their location within the ligand molecule must enable ring formation that is sterically possible. Typical structures that meet these requirements have been given by Fuerstenau and Herrera-Urbina (1988) and are listed in Figure 1. As noted, the functional groups of these reagents contain electron donor atoms such as oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur. Basic groups, such as amino (-NH,), are those that contain an atom with a lone pair of electrons. Acid groups are those, such as carboxylic (-COOH) which lose a hydrogen ion and coordinate with the metal atom. Examples of each of these types chelating reagents are given in Tables 1-4. The specificity of chelating agents for various metal ions has long been known and was utilized early in the search for new flotation collectors. In 1927, Vivian used ammonium nitrosophenylhydroxylamine as a collector for cassiterite. Holman (1929) tested dimethylglyoxime as a collector for nickel oxide. He also suggested taurin as a collector for oxidized lead ores. DeWitt and von Batchelder (1939) suggested the use of oximes as flotation collectors. Gutzeit (1946) conducted an extensive investigation on the use of chelating agents as collectors and as depressants for gangue minerals. Heap leaching is discussed as a unit process. Five factors are identified as the principal elements that can be measured and/or controlled. These are: 1. Material Size 2. Volume of solution 3. Tonnage of heap 4. Time 5. Solution concentretion. The Rate of Extraction Curves obtained from an actual heap or column tests describes the economic viability of the unit process. By analysis of these curves and the five factors end their inter-relationship it is possible to determine how the extraction rate can be increased. The practice of leach and rest used by many operators is analyzed and shown on a hypothetical rate of extraction curve. The influence of the driving force of the hydrogen ion and ferric Lon as Lixivants and its effect on the rate of extraction curve is discussed.

Chemically, mica is a complex silicate of sodium, potassium and aluminum. There are no important uses of mica where the chemical analysis is important, except that in some uses of ground mica, the content of iron oxide present as an impurity must be kept to a very low limit. Muscovite mica is frequently found containing black and red "stain" as a homogeneous part of the books or sheets. In most cases this stain or impurity is magnetite or hematite. Some mica contains impurities deposited by infiltration. This is commonly a red stain, less often brown or white. The best mica is free from all such impurities, and the greater their content, the less value does the mica have.(1) It is because of these undesirable impurities that a large segment of the fine ground mica industry relies on weathered pegmatites and alaskite ores as a source of raw material. The mica concentrates obtained from these ores are relatively clean and require moderate beneficiation to meet color and density specifications. One need only to observe the stained and decrepitated condition of the mica recovered from mica schist to appreciate the challenge that processing this material presents. Despite these adversities there are several advantages to be gained by mining and processing mica schist ores. The mica content of these ores are considerably higher than the pegmatites and alaskite ores now being mined, often containing in excess of forty percent mica. This-higher grade mica feed should promote a lower mining and milling cost with its resulting competative advantage. With more rigid government
