Reactive barriers, which consume oxygen, are prospective though unconventional alternatives to physical barriers for Acid Mine Drainage prevention. However, a reactive barrier implies a problem of duration. Pore gases were analysed in several wood waste piles in order to understand the factors which control wood degradation and help to determine the effective life span of such a cover. Long term efficiency seems to strongly depend on the degree of water saturation at the bottom of the pile, likely because the development of a microbial biomass in such an environment helps to keep the amounts of nutriments and readily metabolizable organic substrates at a high level, which in turn promotes oxygen consumption.

Silicon Carbide and Aluminum Oxide were two of the early forms of man-made abrasives often referred to as synthetic and were invented at the turn of the century. Edward G. Acheson invented Silicon Carbide in 1893 and Charles F. Jacobs filed a patent for the manufacture of fused alumina from bauxite in 1900. Jacobs' patent provided a method for tempering the alumina by reduction and fusion to a degree of hardness and toughness suitable for abrasive purposes. These two inventions are the basis of the synthetic abrasive industry today. Improvements have been made in the equipment used in the process, however the process itself remains basically the same. In 1904 A. C. Higgins observed that hot spots developed on the shell of the pot furnace used in the reduction of bauxite. He found that by spraying water on the hot spots they could be prevented and, in addition, they failed to return in the same place. Higgins reasoned that the cooling effect of the water caused the melt contacting the metal shell to freeze as an insulating autogenous refractory. This suggested that an improved furnace design could be obtained by using a metal shell which is continuously flooded with water on the exterior surface. Paradoxically, a furnace required to contain tons of molten Aluminun Oxide was thus constructed of nothing but a sheet steel shell with no refractory lining at all. A test of such an arrangement was tried by Higgins with considerable trepidation and was found to be extremely satisfactory.

Over the years since the initial experiments with underground concreting were made in 1956, attesting to cope with the ground weight and pressure encountered in the development of a large-scale underground block caving system, the use of monolithic concrete linings has grown to include most of the primary development in the, mining area. Although the development cost of concrete linings is higher than either timber or steel-supported openings, the repair and maintenance costs are substantially lower, making concrete the most economical means of ground support. Other advantages are also apparent, in that concrete provides superior fireproofing, better ventilation, and a safer, cleaner working place.

This article describes three practical applications of the Hill of Value (HoV) methodology within different stages of strategic planning for open-pit mining operations and projects. In the pursuit of optimal mine planning, this study establishes a comprehensive case study during the (i)design phase, by refining key parameters for efficient decisionmaking. (ii)production planning, where the HoV is used to define achievable production rates, enhancing operational effectiveness through a nuanced consideration of mining and processing capacities. (iii)Additionally, the study introduces a conceptual framework for orchestrating the optimal sequence of multiple pits during the planning phase, with a focus on maximizing project value.

Since 1975, about a dozen high capacity flotation plants have been installed in the Ruhr district. Depending on the size of the preparation plants, the design capacity of the flotation section is between 100 - 150 t/h. The flotation units generally comprise rougher and cleaner stages in which 5 to 6 or 4 to 5 agitators respectively are arranged in line. The unit volume allocated to each agitator is up to 16 m3. The type of flotation machines, the design of these plants and their instrumen¬tation and control equipment are described in detail. The run of mine coal in the Ruhr district is characterized by a wide variety of the volatile matter. Generally, a distinction must be made between coals with more than 30 - 35% V.M., which are preferably used in power station, and coal with lower V.M. content, which are preferably used as coke-oven feed. The difference between these coals in respect to grain-size distribution, ash cotent and flotation properties will also be described in detail.

One can hardly discuss coal pneumoconiosis unless it is placed in the context of the total pneumoconiosis problem in the mining industry. However, it might be well if first we defined a few terms, since it has been my experience that the use of the word pneumoconiosis frequently causes con- fusion among those who are not familiar with the term. Pneumoconiosis comes from two Greek words meaning lung and dust. Hence, the word pneumoconiosis simply means dusty lung, or dust on the lung. There are many forms of the disease, some of which are disabling and some are not. Among the many dusts which cause pneumoconiosis might be included silica, asbestos, coal, talc, iron ore, and many other mineral dusts. Silicosis is a specific form of pneumoconiosis. It is caused by the inhalation of excessive amounts of silicon dioxide in the form of crystalline quartz. The disease is manifested by nodulation of the lungs which is apparent on an X-ray film. Continued exposure to silicon dioxide causes the nodules to grow and ultimately large areas of the lung become scar tissue which pre- vents the lung from performing its physiologic function. The use of heavy media organic solvents to recover coal from its attendant gangue is hardly new. DuPont built a pilot plant using pentachloroethane in 1936 at Weston Coal Company, Weston Breaker, Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. That's almost half a century ago. Since that time, it has become common practice to utilize similar classes of chemicals in laboratory separations of coal samples. It is the objective of this paper to discuss some specific separations on both pilot and laboratory scale on samples representing different classifications of coal. These separations have been carried out on coarse (+4 M), middling (4 x 20 M), and fine (-20 M) coal samples. The coal samples tested include Pennsylvania anthracite; Pennsylvania, Indiana and Colorado bituminous; Wyoming sub-bituminous; and Texas lignite. Other chlorinated solvents were used to vary the specific gravity of separation.

Most pyrometallurgical processes take place at high temperature with rapid chemical reactions when the elements and compounds are usually liquid or gaseous. Smelting. The classical method of obtaining a metal from its ore or concentrate is to smelt it in a furnace. The initial letter "s" of this word implies that, in addition to the physical process of melting, a chemical change also occurs. This is usually the reduction of metal oxide to metal by carbon or through a series of processes involving oxidation and reduction. Since solid-solid contact would not be sufficient to give a high rate of reaction, most smelting reactions occur by medium of two reactions involving solid-gaseous contact: where M represents a metal. The commonly preferred unit for carrying out these reactions is the blast furnace,1 which is a vertical shaft of refractory brick or water-cooled steel in which lumps of metal oxide and coke are fed at the top, and an air-blast is injected through tuyeres (water-cooled pipes) in the bottom. "Experience from Australia has identified what is referred to as non-conventional surface subsidence behaviour. This occurs under irregular surface topography, resulting in valley closure, valley floor uplift or “upsidence”, and far-field horizontal movements – even occurring beyond conventional “angle of draw” limits. This paper discusses such behaviour recently observed in Pennsylvania and focuses on the 2005 case of Duke Lake Dam in Ryerson Station State Park. In July 2005, there was a significant increase in water leakage through a number of growing cracks in the dam leading to the dam being breached to avoid an uncontrolled failure. An underground longwall mine was located approximately 900ft to the north, mining at depths of 330 – 720ft. Investigations (including a subsequent ground movement monitoring program) found a range of evidence in the vicinity suggesting that valley closure and far-field horizontal movements may have occurred resulting from the adjacent mining. The paper discusses the phenomenon of non-conventional subsidence behaviour and the Ryerson State Park case study, including an assessment of mining, geology and subsidence impacts and suggested ground behavioural mechanisms. INTRODUCTION Non-Conventional Subsidence The conventional understanding of coal mine subsidence on which most current subsidence understanding and prediction techniques are based, includes the concept of angle of draw which effectively limits the lateral extent of subsidence effects and impacts. Within this zone – above and marginally beyond the boundary of mining – downward vertical subsidence is the dominant component, together with localised horizontal movements towards the mined region, with related tilts and strains. However, more recent experience from Australia over the last two or three decades has identified what is referred to as non-conventional surface subsidence behaviour. This is found to occur in areas of irregular surface topography or variable terrain, and is characterised by phenomena such as valley closure, valley floor uplift or upsidence, and far-field horizontal movements, all of which can occur beyond the conventional angle of draw limits. A numerical model is being developed to assess the enhancement of ore permeability by improving fracture connectivity with micro-hydrofracturing. As part of this project, a generic two-dimensional percolation model was developed to test the impact of various field conditions on permeability. Field data from Cyprus Minerals' Mineral Park mine was used to establish the statistical properties of the observed fracture systems. Results of statistical analyses of field data and examples of the use of the percolation model are presented

Fan stall is a notorious phenomenon with axial-flow fans. When multiple fans of this type serve a ventilation system, their mutual impacts are very complicated and not well understood. Results from laboratory experiments indicated that the immediate consequence of a fan working across its stall zone (i.e., the pronounced trough on the fan characteristic curve) is that some branches in the system may suffer abrupt and even drastic changes in air quantity and pressure. The quantity range of the fan that causes the abrupt change is called an unstable operating range. The corresponding quantity range of a branch is called a non-achievable quantity range of the branch because any quantity within this range cannot be achieved without changing some parameters of the ventilation system (e.g., branch resistances). These concepts are introduced based on the test results from tubing networks to bring attention to these important characteristics of ventilation systems.

The Colorado Joint Review Process (JRP), a bold step to expedite energy and mineral projects, is off and running. Blazing the trail is Amax Inc., which serve as guinea pig in JRP's development and is now test-flying the process at its Mt. Emmons molybdenum property in Gunnison County, CO. Although JRP is still in its infancy, the new permitting review process has drawn enthusiastic applause from across the resource spectrum: William K. Reilly, president of the Conservation Foundation, said JRP is "one of the most interesting projects I've seen" and called on environmentalists to monitor its progress "because it appears worthwhile." Stan Dempsey, vice president of Amax Inc., noted that of all the locales in which Amax operates, Colorado is "the only place where the complicated mine permitting scheme appears to work"-an achievement he attributes to JRP. Lynda Lee Brothers, the federal Energy Department's assistant deputy secretary of environment, reported that an extensive DOE search has not turned up "another single mechanism in all of government and private industry as good as JRP as a model for the proposed federal Energy Mobilization Board."

HISTORICAL REVIEW OF BOARD OPERATIONS The Ontario Worker's Compensation Board was established in law enacted by the legislature of the Province of Ontario in 1915. It was designed to pay insurance benefits to injured workers, and at the same time to protect employers from legal suit. It was based upon an enquiry system rather than an adversary system such as that used in the courts process. Initially, the system was designed to pay compensation benefits and subsequently, to pay for the cost of medical treatment and pensions for disability and disease resultant from the effects of traumatic injury. In 1947, the Act was changed to include industrial or occupational generated diseases, not specifically related to traumatology. Such occupational diseases were therefore accepted and benefits paid subsequent to that date. As will be discussed in several minutes, even today the vast preponderance of compensation claims with the Ontario Board continues to be related to the effects of trauma. HISTORICAL REVIEW OF EXPOSURE TO RADON GAS DECAY PRODUCTS In some areas of Ontario, especially in Northern Ontario, there is a natural leaching of radon gas from the underlying rock formation. This constitutes very low levels of radon gas decay product radiation exposure to those persons coming in contact and inhaling these substances. This paper however is designed to discuss the occupational generated types of radon gas exposures. For many years dating back to the 1930's, partially refined ores were being shipped from Northern Canada to a refinery located at Port Hope, Ontario, still in operation and currently operated by Eldorado Nuclear Limited of Canada. Initially, the purpose for the operation was extraction of radium to be sold on world markets for medical treatment purposes. With the advent of World War II, this market collapsed. Subsequent to World War II, the availability of other sources of radiation for medical radio-therapy generally replaced the requirements for radium. During World War II, a new market opened up for the Port Hope refinery however as work into nuclear chain reactions and the development of the atomic bomb identified the need for uranium and enriched uranium. During the period of operations where radium was being extracted at the Port Hope refinery, it is now known that an identifiable radon gas hazard did exist. This hazard disappeared when the production line for extraction of radium ceased operations. In 1954, uranium mining operations opened up in Ontario at two locations, Bancroft and Elliot Lake. At the peak of operations, 16 mines were operational and 11,000 workers were employed in these mining operations. A high level of mining activity continued over a 10 year interval with the Bancroft Mines closing permanently in 1964 following a 10 year life of operation. The other mines in Elliot Lake closed about the same time with the exception of two uranium mine operations which have continued to be operational up to the present time. By 1965, due to a dramatic drop in world demand for uranium, the total work force had fallen to 1/10 of the peak work force, and approximately 1,300 workers remained in employment. It is of interest to note that one significant difference in the work environment between Elliot Lake and Bancroft was the high silica content of the Elliot Lake ore. This gave rise to a number of cases of silicosis developing in relatively short intervals of time in the Elliot Lake miner population. No cases of silicosis were identified from the Bancroft operations. Based upon the experience in investigating and evaluating actual cases of lung cancer in the uranium miners over the years, the medical staff at the Ontario Board also developed the impression that radiation levels were much higher in the Bancroft operations, especially in the earlier years of operation, than at Elliot Lake. This resulted in accumulation of higher levels of Working Level Months (WLM), usually over a shorter exposure interval in many of the cases. This aspect will be further evaluated in this presentation. Subsequent to 1965, the work force remained quite static in numbers until 1975. At that time, there began to develop an increase in the work force, and this increase is continuing at a moderate rate up to the present. INITIAL METHOD OF HANDLING LUNG CANCER CLAIMS The first lung cancer claims in Ontario from uranium mining operations were accepted on the perceived cause-effect relationship. This relationship was based upon the data from the Colorado observations and the Czechoslovakia data. Initially, a series of regression equations on mortality were developed and used to estimate the effect of exposure to low cumulative doses of radon daughters as it might relate to the frequency of occurrence of lung cancer at any particular cumulative exposure level. A probability of cancer being radiation induced as against it being caused from other factors was calculated. This method was discontinued subsequent to 1972 due to problems encountered in carrying out this complex evaluation. The primary purpose of the Prototype Installation Facility (PIF) for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) in this conceptual design was to test the magnets and other physics equipment. PIF was located in the northwest quadrant of the SSC 54 mile (87 km) main ring and consists of the first segment of tunnels, approximately 17,060 lineal feet (5.2 km) of 12 foot inner-diameter (ID) (3.7 m) tunnel, three 250 ± foot (60 m) deep shafts, connecting tunnels, and associated niches and alcoves. PIF would be the first portion of the main ring collider tunnel to be constructed. The geology, underground excavation conditions, underground facilities, and contractual considerations are discussed.

In this paper, the results of mathematical modeling of casing pipes decontamination from radio-active new mineral forms directly in boreholes using hydrochloric and hydro-silicic-fluoric acids are presented. Modeling for highly and low radioactive coatings on the walls of casing pipes of Anastasievka oil-and-gas deposit was performed using GEMS software, based on the method of Gibbs energy minimization. Calculations have shown that thorianite and goethite, that are present in low-active crusts, detected in casing pipes uplifted from comparatively low depths, are well dissolved in hydrochloric acid, but radiobarite is almost insoluble. For the same acid concentrations, almost all radiobarite of high-active coatings detected in pipes uplifted from considerable depth is dissolved. To evaluate the possibility of decontamination of pipes from radiobarite of low-active coatings, modeling of crust dissolution under the action of H2SiF6 has been performed. The results have shown that for acid concentrations of more than 13 % almost all Ra and Ba are dissolved while all iron and thorium remains in goethite-thorianite solid solution. For the same acid concentration, almost all radiobarite from high-active coatings is dissolved. Therefore, no reagent allows decontamination of pipes from coatings of both types. It seems that successive or simultaneous use of both reagents (HCl and H2SiF6) in certain ratio is required. To clarify this issue, further experimental and model investigations are necessary. The issue of decontamination of casing pipes from galena that is present in high-active crusts also needs to be clarified.

A comparison is presented of coal pyrolysis at temp¬eratures ranging from 4090 to 497°C and thermal dissolution of coal in tetralin at temperatures ranging from 350° to 450,°C, both utilizing a Utah high-volatile bituminous coal. The initial coal pyrolysis reactions are second order with an enthalpy of activation of 35.6 kcal per mole. The fraction of total product yield produced under second order conditions ranges from 67% at 409°C to 96% at 497°C. The process then gradually deteriorates to a first order reaction in the later stages with enthalpy of activation of 4.1 kcal, per mole. The initial reactions of solution of coal in tetralin are second order with an enthalpy of activation of 28.8 kcal per mole. The fraction of total product produced under second order conditions ranges from 63% at 350°C' to 94% at 450°C. The dissolution process then gradually changes to first order in the later stages with enthalpy of activation of 15.6 kcal per mole. A model is presented which relates the two processes and explains, the significance of the above similarities.

Planning a mining operation in Alaska will involve the investigation of many parameters common to mine planning anywhere. However, there are some unique circumstances that must be recognized when one considers development of mining operations in Alaska. This paper will not attempt to provide a blueprint for mine planning in Alaska, but hopefully will provide a better understanding of the truly unique nature of the northern latitudes. Given this understanding, the mine planner can better assess the potential hurdles along the road to a successful mining operation. The regulatory trend towards uniform standards for mining throughout the United States exemplifies the necessity for Alaska to prove its unique position in the natural resources picture. The factors which make Alaska truly different from the "Lower 48" can be summarized by four points 1) Remoteness and Size 2) Seasonable Extremes 3) Geologic Immaturity 4) Vegetation and Wildlife

In 1967 the US Congress passed the "Clean Air Act." This act was amended in 1970. As a result it soon became obvious that American industries were going to have to make significant changes in their methods of operation to be able to comply with quickly developing federal regulations. One of the first regulations developed was on sulfur dioxide. For this reason, the nonferrous smelting industry was immediately affected by these new regulations. This is true because the smelting process produces sulfur dioxide as a natural product of combustion when the sulfur-bearing ore is oxidized to purify the metal. The federal government's approach for setting standards included public hearings at which government, industry, and private citizens were allowed to make comments. For this reason, it was apparent to Kennecott's Metal Mining Div. that it was desirable to make a maximum effort in working with the agency to see that correct input was provided at the hearings to assist the government in setting fair and realistic standards. It was also obvious that more complete monitoring would be required. It soon became apparent that the efforts required input from many levels of the corporation from the chief executive to the plant operators. In order to accomplish both the administrative and the technical needs, an organization was needed that could respond quickly to these needs, obtain information from diverse sources, and bring it to focus in an organized approach to the problem.

Brockway Glass Company, Inc., manufactures glass containers at fourteen plants located in nine states. The relatively high place value of the major glass batch components dictates that raw material supplies be obtained from numerous sources in the United States and Canada. One objective of our central composition control program is to arrive at a glass composition with similar physical properties at each of our plant locations. This requires that adjustments be made in the batch compositions to compensate for chemical variations from one raw material source to another. Minor chemical variations will occur in sand, limestone, and dolomite from one source to another. Major variations are present in the alumina sources because of the diverse rock types utilized.

Forecasting, an ancient art, is con-ducted by everyone in varying degrees. It is a vital aspect of mineral production and conditions must be predicted over a long time frame in all aspects of the industry from exploration to plant construction. Although many government agencies as well as private industry make forecasts, there are insufficent "make good" analyses performed. The performance of more such studies could sharpen forecasting ability.
