The demand of manufacturing high-purity magnetite concentrate leads to the advent of various magnetic separators. A novel magnetic drum separator has been developed with an optimal permanent magnet system and a complex-forces field is adopted, involving magnetic force, gravitation, fluid resistance, friction, inertial centrifugal force, etc. Proper ultrasonic probes are inserted into the bottom tank to break up the magnetic floes. The performance of magnetite in the complex-forces field is described and the optimal operation conditions are suggested.

This paper is a brief review of the lubrication requirements of enclosed gearing on earth moving equipment, particularly as they apply to intermediate and large draglines and shovels used in open pit mining operations. It discusses the requirements of spur, helical and herringbone gearing in both horizontal and vertically mounted applications. The effects of base stock, oil viscosity, additive treatment, quantity of oil and method of application are considered. In addition, a newly designed circulating oil system for enclosed swing gear cases and the reasons for its development are discussed.

In my experience, nothing helps me better to get off to a good start in preparing a paper or a talk than a copious consultation with a comprehensive dictionary. I also feel defining the perimeters of a particular subject is helpful to the listener and reader. Sometimes thus precisely defining even the most common of words is helpful. Our general topic this morning as all of you know is "Transportation of Industrial Minerals." The definition of transportation given by the dictionary which I think is appropriate here is: "Systems and modes of conveyance of persons or goods from place to place." Our preceding panelists have outlined for you the state of the art inso¬far as systems and modes of conveyance from place to place are concerned today via rail, water and motor. My assignment is somewhat different as indicated by my topic, "The Traffic Manager in an Industrial Minerals Operation."

Environmental impacts from acidic mine drainage are growing national concerns that are particularly acute in the headwaters of the Rocky Mountain region. In the Black Hills of South Dakota, approximately one thousand mines are inactive or abandoned, most of them in the headwaters of major drainages. This paper examines the Bear Butte Creek basin, a heavily mineralized watershed with significant historical mining impacts and a surface gold mine permitted in 1997. The watershed loses its surface discharge to swallow holes in the karstic Madison Limestone. The integrity of the aquatic ecosystem was monitored with a suite of site-specific bio-indicators. Stream surveys covered the entire reach of Bear Butte Creek from near its headwaters to the swallow holes in the Madison aquifer. Data from the stream surveys, water-quality sampling, and bio-indicator surveys clearly showed that water-quality impacts are limited mainly to Strawberry Creek and to the area of Bear Butte Creek near and downstream of the town of Galena.

Exploration targets and results in the mining industry are commonly summarized in terms of tonnage and grade. Business appraisals require, as additional information, the expected profit or loss implied by the physical summary. The early incorporation of knowledge gained through financial analysis computations can provide a means for economically resolving many common exploration and development problems. Examples of such applications from the activities of exploration planning, reconnaissance, land acquisition, and development planning are presented in this paper.

From the surface mines of Ptolemais basin 48 samples of Pliocene lignite were collected. The samples were analysed using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INNA) and Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) for determining the concentrations of 39 trace elements. The contents of sulphur and ash and the loss of ignition were also determined. The chemical affinity of these trace elements was estimated based on 40 correlation diagrams between the elements concentrations and the ash content of the collected lignite samples. According to the obtained results, 18 elements have inorganic affinity (Co, Cr, Cs, Hf, Sc, Th, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Yb, Lu, ?n, Ba, ?, Sn, ?r) and 10 elements have inter-mediate affinity (As, U, ?r, Pb, Cu, Sb, Sr, S, Ni, V). The remaining 12 elements (Au, Ir, ??, Rb, Se, Ta, W, Tb, Ag, Cd, Bi, Be) exhibited concentrations below the detection limit. Thus, they were impossible to be classified in a specific affinity group. Based on the classification of these trace elements and sulphur in inorganic and intermediate affinity groups some useful conclusions are drawn regarding their behaviour during lignite combustion and lignite ash utilization and disposal processes.

The effect of particle size on coal dewatering has been well recognized However, there are no systematic studies on ultrafine coal dewatering. The results discussed last year revealed the effect of flocculant type and coal wettability on the filtration of ultrafine coal In this paper, the differences in dewatering between -25 µ m ultrafine and -500 µ m fine coal with addition of flocculants, surfactants and oil-emulsions in vacuum filtration are further investigated Significant differences were observed in the reduction of the cake moisture. The utilized emulsions were found to be very powerful and promising filtration aids for both ultrafine and fine fractions of hydrophobic and hydrophilic coal

The Devonian salt basin, which contains the Saskatchewan Potash deposits, extends from just east of the foothills in Alberta, north as far as the Peace River area, across Saskatchewan and into Manitoba as far east as Range 10 west of the First Meridian and south into Montana and North Dakota. The basin is closed everywhere except to the northwest. The known potash deposits are confined almost entirely to the Province of Saskatchewan, with the exception of a small area in western Manitoba bordering the Saskatchewan boundary. The following discussion will concern only the Saskatchewan part of the basin. The evaporite series in the basin is defined as the Prairie Evaporite Formation of the Elk Point Group, of Middle Devonian age. Recent work done by potassium-argon dating methods has indicated an Upper Middle Devonian (Givetian) age of from 265 to 347 million years for the potash. The Elk Point Group consists in ascending order of the Ashern, Winnipegosis and Prairie Evaporite Formations. The Ashern formation, sometimes called the Third Red Bed, consists of dolomitic shales or shaly dolomites. The Winnipegosis is a reef type dolomite, usually with good porosity, and in many cases oil-staining, although to date no production has been obtained. The Prairie Evaporite formation consists of anhydrite overlain by halite and finally, in Saskatchewan, by the potash beds. In almost all wells which have been cored for potash the lowest potash bed is underlain by one or two bands of anhydrtte, which are used as marker horizons. Cores from a few wells which cored to the bottom of the salt series have shown flecks of potash throughout the halite.

With the goal of improving the strength characteristics of pneumatically emplaced material used for localized subsidence control, the binding additives: fly ash, bentonite, and Portland Cement, were examined for their effect on the support capabilities of coal refuse. It was found that, within certain concentration ranges, all three of them offered some increase in the ultimate strength of the backfilling mixture; however, Portland Cement gave the greatest percentage increases. Selection of the appropriate backfilling mixture will allow for the most economical and efficient subsidence control when pneumatic stowing is employed.

Diesel powered underground mining equipment is presently the most productive, safest and efficient equipment used in underground mining operations. The widespread application of this equipment to underground mining is restricted, however, largely because of the difficulty of controlling the diesel engine exhaust emissions. This paper briefly examines control devices currently available for underground application, and also discusses the theory and mechanics of controlling diesel missions with particulate traps and filters.

Introduction Although autogenous grinding applications date back to the early years of mineral processing when tumbling-type mills were first used, there has been a renewed interest in this type of grinding over the past few decades. A review of the historical aspects of autogenous grinding is provided which follows the development of the various types of mills and processes. Wet and dry grinding operations using either autogenous or semiautogenous mills, including the Aerofall mill, are described. Em¬phasis has been placed on the test work required to evaluate the feasibility of using autogenous or semiautogenous grinding for a spe¬cific application. The factors which must be considered to establish the appropriate design criteria for these types of grinding circuits are discussed in detail. Successful application of these grinding circuits results from a thorough test program, a careful analysis of the test results, and a practical engineering approach to the design of the process flowsheet and milling equipment. Certain pebble milling applications, where the pebbles consist of the ore or rock itself, can be classified as autogenous pebble mill grinding, or better known as ore-pebble mill grinding. In the generic sense, pebble milling includes those grinding operations using a tum¬bling mill in which the grinding media consists of various types of pebbles, either ore or other pebbles, instead of metal balls. Conse¬quently, this subject is covered separately in Chapter 5, Pebble Mills. Operating data from many of the installations located throughout the world are included in this chapter. Our appreciation is extended to those companies who contributed this important information. History of Autogenous Grinding F. C. BOND Autogenous grinding, the grinding of ore by itself rather than by special metallic or nonmetallic grinding bodies distinct from the ore, has an old and honorable place in the art of mineral processing. It antedates the use of the rod mill and is only a few years younger than the development of the continuously fed rotating tumbling mill in which it is accomplished. Its history71, 72 is inextricably bound up with that of gold mining. Every important early development of autogenous grinding took place on ores of gold, except in one case of silver ore. In common with many other features of modern mineral processing, autogenous grinding would have been greatly retarded if the winning of gold had been so small a part of mining in the past as it is today. Gold unlocked the secrets of rock-on-rock grinding. In years past gold ores were crushed in stamp batteries and then flowed over copper plates covered with mercury which amalgamated the gold. The McArthur Forrest cyanide process for the dissolution of gold in a dilute alkaline cyanide solution appeared in 1890. With finer grinding it recovered more gold than could be won by amalgama¬tion alone. The first response was to stamp in cyanide solution and finer mesh screens guarding the stamp discharge. However, the fine screens greatly restricted the tonnage stamped, and they wore out rapidly. Rotating tumbling mills70, 73 were the obvious choice to grind the coarse product from stamps. Many of these were Gates tube mills; more than 1,000 of these were sold between 1907 and 1913. They were made in 6, 51h, and 5 ft diam, with lengths of 20 and 22 ft. The 5 x 22-ft size was the most popular. The term tube mill did not refer to the mill shape, but included all tumbling mills using grinding pebbles. The flint or chert rocks found along the coasts of Denmark and Normandy are probably the most durable and resistant to abrasive and tumbling wear of any on earth. They were much used in the early tube mills. The early linings were all silex or Danish flint blocks, cemented into place with portland cement. Local hard stones or cast iron blocks were also used later. The cast iron liners carried lifters and were not bolted to the shell, but were held in a tight circle against it by steel wedges hammered home between them. The first ribbed metal liners designed to hold grinding pebbles pounded into them by the mill action were developed at El Oro, Mexico, about 1905. These and the Forbes, Komata, and Tonopah types, as well as the Osborne type developed in South Africa within about five years, were very successful in reducing liner wear. They sometimes lasted two years or more, and equalled or exceeded the life of silex lining at a lower cost. Some of the types were patented. The pioneer name recorded in the history of autogenous grinding is that of Kenneth L. Graham. In 1907 at the Geldenhuis Deep Ltd. mine near Johannesburg, he ran a comparative test on two tube mills. One mill used pieces of the common gold ore, or banket, and the other used the customary imported Danish pebbles as grinding media. He published the first account of autogenous grinding.'' In a test lasting 81 days the ore pebbles showed a definite saving over the Danish pebbles. Graham's historic paper also describes the invention of B. Chew of the Crown Deep Mines of the first trammel to be attached to a grinding mill discharge. The first known account of autogenous grind¬ing printed outside of South Africa was the description of the Graham test in Mining and Scientific Press's The use of grate- vs. overflow¬discharge was also described at this time." The news of this successful test appears to have had immediate effect, for by the end of 1908 the number of tube mills on the Rand had increased from 72 to 120.76 Presumably, most of these mills were now using autogenous grinding. The ore was principally a hard conglomerate of quartz peb¬bles cemented by silica, and was eminently suitable for use as a grind¬ing media. It is unfortunate that in South Africa the new autogenous process continued to be called by its old name of pebble milling, since the name does not distinguish between grinding with ore and grinding with extraneous pebbles. For increased clarity the former is called rock pebble milling. The first historical stage in the development was what is now designated as secondary autogenous grinding, or rock pebble milling. It consists of grinding a feed all passing 'A in. or finer with ore pebbles about 2 to 4 in. in diameter. The next stage to develop was that now called intermediate autogenous grinding, where larger amounts of larger pebbles about 5 in. in size were used to grind ore which had been crushed to about rod mill feed size or somewhat finer. It was developed on the Rand and in other places where coarse stamp screens were used to increase mill tonnage. In many cases the early secondary and intermediate autogenous mills have now been replaced by conventional ball mills and rod mill-ball mill circuits, with the object of further increasing grinding capacity. The third stage to develop is designated as wet primary autogenous grinding, in which run-of-mine ore or a primary crusher product is all fed to the autogenous mill together. It developed many years later indepen¬dently in the United States and in South Africa. The fourth and most recent stage is that of dry primary autogenous grinding, which developed in the United States and Canada. All four stages originated in gold mining. The first use of commercial autogenous grinding outside of the Rand apparently took place five years later in 1912 at the Santa Gertrudis gold mine at Pachuca, 55 miles northeast of Mexico City. Resource figures for bentonite clays are generally based on stratigraphic, sedimentary geologic data and drilling and sampling. Estimates of bentonite resources and/or reserves commonly found in the literature report on bentonite occurrences in specific localities or areas but none on any documented comprehensive estimates of bentonite resources. From 1974 thru 1977 the Bureau of Land Management conducted extensive studies of the resources of commercial grade bentonite in the three state region. These investigations consisted of: 1. Stratigraphic and geologic sampling with supplemental drilling data, followed by geostatistical analysis. 2. Data compiled from a systematic search of county and state records on mining locations, leases and acreage filed for bentonite. Estimates of resources of commercial grade bentonite using industry parameters were calculated from these data sources. It is concluded that there exists from 1.5 to 2.4 billion tons of in-place bentonite in Wyoming, Montana and South Dakota. Assuming a 5 percent annual growth rate for the industry, this would indicate a life of 62 to 73 years.

Sampling is used in all scientific, engineering, marketing, and financial disciplines. The scientific theory of probabilistic sampling is a well established field, providing a general framework for basic methods that can be applied in fields that would appear to have little in common. The revolution in sampling occurred, in part, as a response to the need for quality control in industry during the Second World War. Since this time probabilistic sampling methods have been replacing pre-scientific non-probabilistic methods of sampling. This has not been the case, however, in the mineral industries in the United States. No general agreement on a theory applicable to all sorts of particulate materials has been reached. As a result, non-probabilistic methods are still widely used and the measurement of sampling precision - the hallmark of scientific sampling - is unknown. Much of the research on particulate material sampling that has been carried out over the last 40 years can be characterized by a lack of theoretical reasoning and rigor, an unwillingness to acknowledge previous work, and a lack of integration with existing, established scientific sampling theory. Non-standard statistical terminology is used and often standard statistical terms are misused. The confusion that has resulted is reflected in ASTM and IS0 sampling standards and in the practice of particulate material sampling.

There are large areas on all of the continents with environments which are favorable for deposits of zinc and lead of Mississippi Valley type. In the developed countries, these environments have for the most part been quite thoroughly explored for the near surface deposits, and it will be necessary to direct more effort to the search for deeper buried deposits from which much of our future production must come. The difficulties of exploration for deep ore of this type are many and formidable, but the area of permissive environments beneath deep cover is many times as great as the area of the known near surface ore districts. It is a reasonable assumption, therefore, that numerous deposits wait for discovery and development. The finding cost, however, is certain to increase, and it is essential that concepts and techniques of exploration be improved if we are to sustain a reasonably strong productive capability into the 21st century. Exploration for deeply buried deposits requires at the outset relatively large areas of favorable geologic environment. The favorable horizons must be within economic limits of depth for the exploration as well as for the mining techniques which are currently available; and there must be some condition, design or strategy which will assure the explorer a reasonable chance of obtaining maximum benefit from discoveries which he may make.

Your chairman has asked me to deal with questions of education relative to our present and projected trends in the field of mineral expiration. First comes our definition of education--and education is not the merely formal acquiring of academic knowledge, but the understanding, using and projection of knowledge into our channels of life and thought activity. This past year makes us realize the extent to which price and economic cut-off may stimulate or curtail exploration,, But exploration does not consist solely in the discovery of sources of material. There is just as inspiring and imaginative a territory in the develop¬ment of uses and application--and no one in our base metal industry but would hope that our educational processes would fertilize those springs of inspiration that lie dormant in us all, toward the- imaginative conception of new uses--lead roofing cloths or felts, non-tarnishable copper utensils, further zinc solid state application. Thus an educational pattern should seek to develop imagination and thinking beyond--the possibility of that small but oh so difficult step just ahead of the existing,

NTRODUCTION In the mining industry, a "drill jumbo" is a drilling unit equipped with one or more rock drills and mounted on a mechanical conveyance. Jumbos range from single¬drill ring drills mounted on simple steel skids to sophisti¬cated multiple-drill units mounted on diesel engine powered carriers and equipped with automatic controls and sound-abatement cabs. Individual types of jumbos usually are designed for specific tasks such as fan drilling in sublevel caving operations. Some units, such as development jumbos, can be utilized for several functions in addition to their normal applications, e.g., for production drilling in room-and-pillar operations, stoping in cut-and-fill mining, etc. Mine operators can purchase individual components from manufacturers, assembling these components into a jumbo suitable for specific conditions. However, this requires that mine personnel have good engineering and mechanical abilities. Although manufacturers of jumbos maintain facilities for designing machines to meet con¬ditions created by new mining methods and unusual ap¬plications, the cost of the engineering and experimental work for new types of jumbos should be evaluated in terms of both costs and benefits; it may be advantageous to plan the mining operation so that existing and proven units can be utilized. GENERAL SELECTION CRITERIA Since the operating conditions vary in underground mines, the design of a jumbo must be selected to cope with the individual characteristics of the mine. The necessary considerations include access space into the working areas, grades expected to be encountered, radii of the curves, ambient temperatures, the characteristics of the rock, the acidity or alkalinity (pH rating) of the mine water, etc. Access to Mine Workings The mine workings must be accessible to the selected jumbo. Frequently, a jumbo must be disassembled at least partially to pass through the mine shafts. There¬fore, a bolted construction allowing disassembly into pieces of suitable size and weight is desirable in most applications. Type of Undercarriage Generally, a crawler-type undercarriage should not be used in trackless mines having acidic mine water. The acidic water causes an electrolytic action between the individual crawler parts and causes rapid corrosion and early failures. Propulsion A two-wheel drive on a pneumatic-tired jumbo is marginal for grades exceeding 12%. A four-wheel drive unit with good weight distribution is capable of operat¬ing on grades of up to 35%. At least 30% of the gross vehicle weight (GVW) should be carried on the steering axle; otherwise, the steering tires may not have sufficient traction on loose road surfaces and may "plow" instead of steer. To assure stable operation in mines with steep grades, the height of the center of gravity of the jumbo should be considered. It should not make the unit prone to rolling over on the steep grades that may be encoun¬tered. Turning Ability In confined working areas, a skid-steering or crawler unit has the best maneuverability. An articulated carrier is preferable when base-rotated parallel booms are being utilized. A rigid-frame jumbo with automotive steering is compact and economical, having lower maintenance requirements than the other two types. However, the turning radius of a rigid-frame unit is wider than either the skid-steering or articulated units, and this wider turning radius may be detrimental in mines with narrow drifts. JUMBO COMPONENTS Rail Undercarriages A mine with a rail-transportation system generally utilizes drill jumbos that are mounted on rail-type under¬carriages. With a light load and good weight distribu¬tion, this carrier may consist of a simple two-axle four-wheel platform onto which the boom-mounting brackets are attached. As the depth of the round and the penetration rates increase, the weight of the equip¬ment installed on the chassis also increases. The greatest problem with a heavy overhung load is balancing the carrier; a three-boom unit may require a substantial amount of counterweighting to maintain an acceptable 70% to 30% axle-load balance. Although lengthening the wheelbase helps balance the unit, a long wheelbase increases the turning radius, often creating problems on curves and sometimes requiring a swivel truck-type chassis. A good rule of thumb for a simple four-wheel undercarriage is to maintain a wheelbase length to track gage-width ratio that does not exceed 2.5 to 1.0. For a larger ratio, a swivel truck should be utilized. Swing-out outriggers or roof jacks help keep a jumbo in place during the drilling cycle. Usually, a rail-mounted jumbo is not self-propelled. Instead, it is maneuvered into place by a locomotive. Occasionally, several headings are being advanced in close proximity, and a self-propelled jumbo is con¬venient. In electrified mines, such a jumbo utilizes conventional battery-powered traction gear; in dieselized mines, hydrostatic drive components offer good flexi¬bility. Gentlemen: The subject of this paper is: ADVANCED APPLICATIONS OF BUCKET WHEEL EXCAVATORS AND RECLAIMERS. Against an urgent world wide energy crisis, the role of bucket wheel excavators and reclaimers in the surface mining of fossil fuels and other ores has been raised to new prominence. This paper will review the reasons for the expanded application of bucket wheel technology, its unique contributions, and other factors relative to volume, cost, versatility, and efficiency. Today, surface mining is faced with the twin challenge of (1), accelerating the rate of removal of massive quantities of overburden and ore, and (2), replacing comparable high volumes of overburden back into the mined-out portion of the pit. Optimum quantitites for - a single electrical power plant now range from 5 to 15 million tons of coal per year. The use of bucket wheels offers the best method for meeting this challenge at lowest possible cost. For example, an advanced application that also satisfies environmental concerns involves the simultaneous functioning of two bucket wheel excavators during surface mining operations. Working at spaced intervals and different levels in conjunction with a transfer conveyor and stacker, one excavator removes the ore while the other one transfers overburden to a stacker that replaces it back into the open pit. The result of this continuously operating cycle is: (1) removal of ore and replacement of overburden back into the pit in massive quantities, (2) at accelerated volume and extreme low cost that cannot be matched by conventional loading machines of any size, and (3) fulfills a basic environmental requirement which is to

Climax Molybdenum Company, a Division of American Metals Climax, Inc., operated a hydrometallurgical plant* at Climax, Colorado from August 1966 through August 1968 to recover molybdenum from a mixed oxide and sulfide ore. The ore treated for this addition to the existing plant contained sufficient Molybdenite values to be mined for Molybdenite recovery alone, so that the oxidized molybdenum recovery could be regarded as a byproduct operation. Climax is located at an elevation of 11,300 feet. All process equipment, except thickeners, was enclosed in buildings. Annual snowfall is approximately 250 inches per year. Paved highways and rail service to the plant are maintained and kept open all year. Most of the employees live in the town of Leadville, which is approximately twelve miles from the plant site. The sulfide flotation plant handles 40,000 to 45,000 tons per day of ore. The mine is one of the world's largest underground mines.

To improve underground safety and visibility during mining applications, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant designed and built a dry-dust filtration unit. The unit works in conjunction with a Spendrup 1120-70 fan with ventilation tubing to filter the face exhaust air during mining operations. The closed- loop system is designed to filter 17 m3/s (36,000 cfm) and is intended to screen 10- µm (1,250 mesh) and larger particles at 90% efficiency. To accomplish this, the unit uses a combination of Dollinger Staynew Inertial Spin filters, cyclones and traditional mesh filter media.

This paper discusses the influence of frother type and dosage on recovery/selectivity in coal/sulfide mineral flotation as a function of particle size. It is shown that different frother structures exhibit quite different but consistent performance characteristics depending on the underlying particle size ranges involved as well as the dosage levels of both the frother and collector. The data presented on existing commercial frothers and some new special purpose experimental frothers is used to illustrate some general operator guidelines on proper frother selection and use.
