To estimate the detailed characteristics of the rock around the cavern during excavation, new monitoring technique for dynamic properties of the rock has been applied. In this paper, micro-seismic monitoring and AE monitoring technique are applied to the excavation of large underground rock cavern and the result was discussed to clarify the acutal behavior of EDZ around the cavern. Zur Einschätzung der Gesteinseigenschaften um die Ausschachtung herum haben die Autoren eine Technik eingesetzt, mit der die physikalischen und dynamischen Änderungen im Gestein um den Schacht während der Ausschachtung beobachtet werden. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde zur mikroseismischen Überwachung ein AE Überwachungsverfahren eingesetzt und die Autoren berichten über die Veränderungen in den Gesteinseigenschaften um die Ausschachtung herum. Dans le but d'évaluer en détail les propriétés des roches qui forment les parois des cavernes creusées, les auteurs ont utilisé une technique de mesure permettant d’observer les modifications physico-dynamiques des roches aux alentours de la caverne pendant son excavation. Dans le cadre de cet article, une technique de surveillance de l’agitation et du bruit microséismiques a été mise en œuvre et les auteurs font état de la modification des propriétés de la roche environnante.

A simulated rockburst was conducted underground at Kopanang Mine, previously called Vaal Reefs No. 9 Shaft. The rockburst was simulated by means of a large blast detonated in solid rock close to a crosscut sidewall. The simulated rockburst involved the design of the seismic source, seismic observations in the near and far field, high-speed video filming, a study of rock mass conditions such as fractures, joints, rock strength etc. Knowledge of the site conditions before and after the simulated rockburst was also gained. Some of the important findings are listed below: ?Two areas of damage were identified on the blasting wall: (i) an area of high-intensity damage in which ground velocities of 3.3 m/s were recorded by an accelerometer, which was subsequently ejected in a block of rock, (ii) an area of low-intensity damage where ground velocities of 1.6 m/s were recorded by an accelerometer which remained on the tunnel wall. ?High-speed filming revealed rock fragments being ejected from the wall at velocities in the range of 0.6 m/s to 2.5 m/s. The measurements were taken in the area of low-intensity damage. As planned, no gas pressure was directly involved in damaging the wall of the tunnel. ?The attenuation of peak particle velocities for the main blast in the near field (6 m to 30 m), as a function of distance R, was found to be proportional to R-1.7. ?The simulated rockburst was recorded as a local magnitude ML= 1.3 by the Klerksdorp regional seismic network. ?Peak particle velocities from nearby blasting, recorded on the tunnel wall after the simulated rockburst, were about six times greater then peak particle velocities recorded from the same source area before the simulated rockburst.

LKAB’s Kiruna Mine, located above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, is the second-largest underground mine in the world today. The orebody is a world-class high-grade magnetite deposit, from which three raw ore products are extracted. We use mixed integer programming to determine a production schedule, i.e., which production blocks to mine, and when to start mining them, so as to minimize deviation from planned production quantities while adhering to the operational constraints of the mine. The resulting model contains thousands of binary variables and a commensurate number of constraints, precluding us from obtaining a schedule in a reasonable amount of time. The problems associated with squeezing rock conditions in tunnels are well known and have been extensively investigated in the past. Although squeezing conditions are predominantly found in tunnels developed in weak rock types it has been noted at the No. 6 Shaft of Hartebeestfontein Mine where the host rock consists of hard, brittle quartzites. This paper investigates typical time-dependent deformation mechanisms in the rock at Hartebeestfontein Mine. The paper will focus on observations made in a strike-orientated tunnel that intersected weak quartzite layers, that were sandwiched between two competent quartzite beds. The observed squeezing mechanism is dominated by creep along bedding planes with a soft talcaceous infilling that behaves in a clay-like fashion when saturated in water. Stress-induced deformation processes, some distance into the sidewall of the excavation, force the already fractured periphery of the excavation into the void. A laboratory study of the creep of intact rock and discontinuities collected at this site was conducted to characterize the time-dependent behaviour. The difference in creep rates between the two types of quartzite found at this site is described in the paper. Creep tests performed on the talcaceous infilling material found that its presence allows substantial shear creep along discontinuities. Attempts were also made to simulate the squeezing mechanism observed underground with numerical techniques. Due to the discontinuous nature of the mechanism described above, a viscoplastic displacement discontinuity technique was used as it allowed for the explicit simulation of discontinuity creep. The results of the modelling and how it compared with the observed behaviour are described in the paper. Environmental impact statement The work described in this paper will not cause any new, or contribute to any existing, hazards confronting the environment.

This paper discusses the current approaches to modelling the DMS cyclone within the De Beers group. Current efforts are split into short term value-adding process understanding and longer term semi-fundamental analysis of separation mechanisms. To date, the basic applied approach has yielded significant value to the group, enabling operators to focus on simple diagnostic measures to control their process. The more involved modelling approach has given rise to a new understanding of the separation field, in particular that the high density gradients within a cyclone are highly localised, indicating that separation of medium to heavy density material takes place low in the cone. The model has proven to be conceptually robust, but still requires further development and validation to become a complete modelling and simulation tool for De Beers.

The Quaternary Age aeolian dune sands of the Sibaya Formation on the northern KwaZulu-Natal coast are well known for their heavy mineral content. Although ilmenite, rutile and zircon are the economically important members of the heavy mineral suite, many other nonsilicate minerals such as monazite, xenotime, chromite, magnetite, and spinel that are normally considered to be eitherun common or even rare are also present and these sands provide a unique opportunity to study such complex minerals. Monazite is the general term used for a complex series of rare earth phosphates dominated by lanthanum, cerium and neodymium with monazite-Ce, monazite-La and monazite-Nd recognized as distinct end members of the solid solution series. In addition to the elements indicated by the simplified formulae (LaCeNd) PO4monazite can also accept significant quantities of other elements from the lanthanide and actinide series (Pr, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy,Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Th, Pa, U, Np). The monazite grains in the Sibaya Formation occur as both composite grains, composed of two or more distinct mineral phases, and homogeneous grains. The net physical properties of the composite grains, and their response to magnetic and electrostatic separation methods are related to size and composition of non-monazite component. However, the homogeneous monazite grains also display significant variation in their physical properties related to their chemical composition.

Mean flow stress analyses from plant mill logs for the conventionally produced hot rolled low carbon steel from the Ispat Iscor Vanderbijlpark strip producing plant, indicated a higher temperature sensitivity than that found for the equivalent SAE 1006strip steel produced in the compact strip plant of Saldanha Steel. This was confirmed quantitatively through detailed hot deformation studies on an as-cast structure as well as on a finer grained condition on the same steel. In the conventionally produced steel, activation energies for hot deformation of 309 kJ.mol-1and 388kJ.mol-1for the two respective starting structures were found, both values extending over the entire normal hot deformation temperature range of 1140 to 900°C. These and other experimentally determined constitutive hot deformation constants were applied to the hot rolling austenite grain size development model used earlier. From this, it is predicted that dynamic recrystallization occurs only in the first two break-down passes at the Vanderbijlpark plant and thereafter static recrystallization occurs after exiting from all of the remaining ten or eleven roughing and finishing passes. This is significantly different from what was predicted earlier for the Saldanha Steel plant with its lesser number of passes where static recrystallization is predicted to occur only in the last three passes. The effects of this process difference and other observed product differences between the two types of product are discussed. Inauguration of the new political dispensation in South Africa in 1994 initiated a dynamic shift in the ownership, management and development of the country’s affluent mineral heritage. The process of substituting the old South African regime with a new equitable system, started soon after the 1994 election of the African National Congress (ANC) to parliament. The Congress’ Freedom Charter revealed the intent of the new dispensation when it called for radical transformation of mineral development. However, since 1955 there have been important changes affecting the rules of mineral development. These are: •Firstly, a drastic change in politics ushered in by negotiation, a spirit of reconciliation and a desire to settle disputes peacefully •Secondly, the globalization of the South African mining industry in tandem with the opening of domestic mineral resources to foreign capitalists; and •Thirdly, the introduction of sustainable development as a holistic approach to mineral development in order to replace traditional narrow-minded environmental management. Each of these significantly shaped the new mineral investment environment of South Africa. This paper represents a summary of the historical developments leading to the current Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act No. 28 of 2002, its Regulations, the much-publicised Broad-Based Socio-Economic Empowerment Charter and its associated Scorecard.

When an underground excavation is created near to an instrumented measuring location, deformation at the location increases. The characteristics of this deformation increase, as well as the duration of the influence caused by the adjacent excavation, is dependent on parameters such as opening geometry and measuring location. In this study, neural networks were applied to investigate the deformation increase and the influence of each parameter on the deformation change derived from extensometer measurements at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) site in New Mexico, USA.

(Process Engineering) degree* The recovery of cobalt and copper from waste slag was studied in a plasma DC-arc furnace in reducing conditions. Three fluxes, CaO,CaF2, and TiO2, were investigated for their influence on selective recovery of cobalt into an iron-rich alloy. A further investigation on the influence of furnace power on the reduction of slag to recover cobalt to the alloy showed that a change in power setting had an unexpected effect on the recovery of metals to the alloy, in that selectivity of base metal recovery over iron recovery decreased at an increased power level. A methodology for the simulation of methane drainage combining geotechnical modelling and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) will be described. Geotechnical modelling was used to predict the development of stress and strain due to mining. The results from the geotechnical modelling were combined with empirical expressions for the variation in permeability with stress of coal measure rocks and assumptions on fracture behaviour. This allowed the permeability, as affected by mining, to be specified in CFD simulations. Flow of methane through strata, with and without methane drainage, was then simulated to examine the effects of methane drainage.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree This paper addresses the critical parameters that need to be considered when designing a mechanized bord-and-pillar mining layout for a narrow tabular steep dipping orebody. These parameters are : ?Reef dip ?Reef width ?Geological structures within the orebody ?Physical dimensions of the selection of machines ?Gradeability of the selection of machines. The main objective in designing such a layout is to maximize machine efficiencies whilst minimizing dilution. This methodology was then applied in the design of a mechanized bord-and-pillar mining layout for a given piece of ground (Vlakpoort and Moddergat) using a given selection of machines. This piece of ground contains the PGM bearing UG2 Reef with an average thickness of 124 cm and dipping at 18°withadverse strike and dip changes. Two bord-and-pillar layouts were designed for this area. Layout 1 is characterized by the use of strike conveyors to convey ore on strike with an average LHD hauling distance of 35 m. Layout2 uses LHDs for all on strike conveyance of ore with an average hauling distance of 75 m. These two layouts were then technically and financially compared. It was concluded that layout 1 is theoretically superior but layout 2 was chosen due to its greater flexibility and probability of operational success. Layout 2 was also compared to conventional mining and it was concluded to be more economically feasible. However the latter is a proven mining method in these conditions and has a lower risk operational failure. Bord-and-pillar mining has some favourable promises such as improving labour difficulties, lowering operating costs and providing safer working conditions. The success of mechanized bord-and-pillar mining in narrow tabular steep dipping orebodies will depend on the extent of the research and development efforts which need to create and innovate technologies to overcome some of the current limitations stated in the above-mentioned parameters.

Mr C J C Janse van Vuuren was educated at Klerksdorp High School, Pretoria Technical Colege, the University of Pretoria, and Unisa. He holds the folowing degrees: BSc (I&S), BSc Hons (Met Pta), ND (Met Tech), AEP (Unisa). Prof. R F Sandenbergh was educated at the Afrikaanse Hoerskool Germiston and the University of Pretoria. He holds the degrees of B Ing (Chem), M Ing (Chem), and D Ing (Metal). President's Award Professor Jannie van Deventer, Head of the Department of Metalurgical Engineering at the University of Stelenbosch, has been honoured with one of the five President's Awards for 1990. These awards are made by the CSIR's Foundation for Research Development. A diverse selection of rockbolt designs and resin anchors are available for use in underground mines. Research in recent years at the UNSW Mining Research Centre led to the construction of a rockbolt pull-testing facility. This facility has subsequently been upgraded, commissioned and initial test work has been completed to verify the pull-test process. A test program has been completed with the objective to understand the load transfer mechanism and improve the general performance of rockbolts. This paper describes the results of this research. Faites des recherches ces dernières années à l'UNSW que le Centre de la Recherche Minier a mené à la construction d'une facilité de l'essai de la traction du rockbolt. Cette facilité a été améliorée par la suite, le travail de l'épreuve en commission et initial a été complété pour vérifier le processus de la traction-épreuve. Un programme de l'épreuve a été complété avec l'objectif comprendre le mécanisme du transfert de la charge et améliorer la performance générale de rockbolts. Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation is a zinc-lead mine located in southern of Namibia. It is currently considering the development of a low grade ore body containing about 2.8% zinc. This ore can be utilised by the concentrator if it could be upgraded prior to the ball mill. Preliminary work indicated that the ore may be upgraded in a pre-beneficiating stage by using dense medium separation, X-ray sorting or a combination thereof to a feed grade of minimum 9% zinc. This paper describes the process followed in evaluating the technologies for pre-beneficiation. The results from test work indicated that the low grade ore is amenable to pre-beneficiation by both dense medium separation and X-ray sorting. A comparison between the two technologies showed that dense medium separation marginally outperformed X-ray sorting on grade and recovery. The results for the X-ray sorting were achieved by tuning the calibration curve specifically for the samples tested.

"Two shortened test procedures for estimating the Bond ball work index are compared for suitability of use on Zambian/DRC-type copper–cobalt ores. The first procedure is based on a batch milling test while the second procedure is based on a limited locked-cycle test. Both procedures were conducted using a standard Bond test mill. INTRODUCTION The Bond ball work index is widely used in the field of minerals processing as an indicator of ore grindability. The work index is determined by means of a locked-cycle test procedure that typically requires seven to eight cycles to stabilise at a re-circulating load of 250%. A typical test requires between three to four kilogram of ore sample and around eight hours of operator time. For geometallurgical test work applications, where a large number of variability samples are to be tested, it would be highly beneficial to use a test procedure that requires less sample mass and operator time. Certain test work laboratories, for example SGS and JK Tech, are already offering various types of shortened test procedures for estimating the Bond ball work index. This paper discusses a comparison of two shortened test procedures that were evaluated for suitability of use on Zambian/DRC-type copper–cobalt ores. EXPERIMENTAL Test Procedure 1 – Batch Milling The first test procedure is derived from a batch milling approach proposed by the University of Hacettepe (Aksani, 2000). Some modifications were, however, made to the data analysis method from that originally proposed. During this test procedure, a 700 mL volume of sample is milled in a standard Bond test mill for a pre-determined number of revolutions. The feed and product particle size distributions are measured for each test. These results are then used to back-calculate a cumulative breakage rate parameter (k) for each particle size, according to the following formula:"
