The role of viscometers for rheological characterization in the hydraulic transport of solids is discussed, and rheological models and phenomena pertinent to the hydraulic transport of backfill material are reviewed. The two main branches of viscometry (rotational and tube) for the measurement of mining slimes rheology are compared. The effects of solids concentration, particle size and chemical additives and the practical application of rheology in backfill system design are presented.

The cross-belt sampler is a device that is very widely used even though it has not been ratified by the Standards associations. This paper is concerned with the bias testing of two cross-belt sampler designs against stopped belt samples and a cross-stream cutter at the belt end. The bias analysis is carried out using size distribution as the analyte and conventional t-testing and the Hotelling T squared test, which are compared for their effectiveness. The paper considers the issue of detectable bias and the statistical planning of bias tests.

The South African platinum mining industry is using a number of different mining methods, including variations of the same method, to extract the narrow reef tabular platinum deposits of the Bushveld Complex. These mining methods fall into three broad categories, namely conventional, mechanised and hybrid mining. A question sometimes asked in the industry is whether mechanized mining methods are more efficient than conventional mining methods. An objective answer requires the methods to be evaluated against multiple criteria simultaneously, whereby each criterion has a relative degree of importance in the overall decision. The most efficient method is the one that scores highest on each criterion. However, some of the criteria can be conflicting, such as by increasing dilution the shaft head grade decreases. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) methodology was selected for the study because it is used to solve problems of this nature. A survey was carried out to determine the relative importance of each efficiency criterion by drawing on the knowledge and experience of mine technical services and project management practitioners in the industry. Efficiency data for four different mining methods drawn from the Egerton (2004) study were used as a case study. The conventional mining method ranked as the most efficient mining method from the four methods considered. The exercise indicates potential for the AHP to be used in the South African platinum mining industry as a tool for selecting optimal layout designs, conduct regular evaluation of the performance of production shafts, or objectively evaluate line managers for promotion. The work described in this paper is part of the methodology used in a current PhD research study at the University of the Witwatersrand. One of the most significant elements in solving the co-kriging equations is the matrix solver. In this paper, the singular value decomposition (SVD) as an equation solver is proposed to solve the co-kriging matrices. Given that other equation solvers have various drawbacks, the SVD presents an alternative for solving the co-kriging matrices. The SVD is briefly discussed, and its performance is compared with the banded Gaussian elimination that is most frequently used in co-kriging matrices by means of case studies. In spite of the increase in the memory requirement, the SVD yields better results.

Sulphuric acid plants now and then see unexpected increases in SO2 emissions. Our experience is that it is not always easy for the acid plants to pin point the exact reason for the SO2 increase. Sometimes a catalyst bed is sacrificed even though reliable emperature readings and gas analyses could have verified satisfactory activity, hence the leaking heat exchanger is never discovered and after the shutdown the SO2 emissions are still too high. This paper will look into some basic catalyst management tools: Good record keeping is a necessity for collection of representative catalyst samples, reliable operating data is an inevitable starting point for all analysis and trending of operating data is a must for plant optimisation and troubleshooting. In addition these catalyst management tools will give a continuous updated knowledge of the catalyst status in each bed providing the basis for a more effective replacement strategy. The most typical reasons for increasing SO2 emissions will be presented together with easy guidelines for cross-checking of operating data, temperature optimisation and good record keeping.

Graduate engineers are a scarce and valuable resource. The situation is aggravated by the 2 years of national service, resulting in the elapse of 6 years after matriculation before a young engineer can start his practical training. After having started work, it is therefore imperative that employees in this category should be trained as effectively as possible in (1) the specialized activities of the employer and (2)the employer's specific work practices. Knowledge and experience of these two areas are vitally important for productive work performance by young engineers. Consequently, it is Iscor's primary objective to enable young graduates, in this case engineers, to obtain the knowledge and experience necessary for productive work in the shortest possible time. Iscor's training programme is therefore structured to enable the young engineer to - perform high-level engineering work and to make sound engineering decisions as soon as possible, - gain a thorough background of the employer's production processes, plant, and equipment, - become thoroughly acquainted with Iscor's work practices, policies, and procedures, - acquire a sound knowledge of Iscor's management techniques and philosophies, - do productive work during the training period, - obtain the following additional qualifications as soon as possible: . Government certificate of competency (legally required before appointment to certain positions) . registration as a professional engineer. Iscor's training programmes are no longer based on predetermined periods of time for each department and work practice. Neither is it a tour or visitors' programme. This contribution explains how Iscor, and more specifically its Mining Department, attempts to reach its objectives in this regard.

"The transition metals tantalum (Ta) and niobium (Nb) are of significant importance, for example in the nuclear energy sector where they are used as cladding materials, as well as in capacitors and specialized materials. For these applications a high-purity metal is needed. The separation of Ta and Nb is always a challenge since they are found together in nature and have similar chemical and physical properties, resulting in costly and laborious separation processes. A technology that has been used successfully for the separation of these metals entails solvent extraction (SX)1. While separation was achieved in a previous SX study using a sulphuric acid (H2SO4) medium with the extractants diiso-octyl phosphinic acid (PA) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), due to the absence of speciation data for Ta and Nb it is not clear how the separation occurred.One method that might be suitable for determining the speciation of a reaction is molecular modelling. Calculations based on the densityfunctional theory (DFT) are now used not only for light elements and small molecules, but also metal complexes, heavy metals, and especially metal separation in SX2. In this study the aqueous phase used during SX was investigated by studying periodic systems of Ta, as a metal and in salt form, when it is in contact with H2O and H2SO4. The results were used to predict the reaction mechanism occurring during SX. Results showed that (i) in a 1:1 acid-water ratio, the deprotonation of H2SO4 was endothermic, (ii) in a 1:5 ratio deprotonation was exothermic forming HSO4 -, and (iii) in a 1:10 ratio double deprotonation occurred to form SO42- exothermically."

The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa advocates the importance of sustainable economic development and justifiable environmental consciousness by business. The government needs to ensure that every citizen of the Republic has access to an environment that is protected, pollution free, and sustainable by enacting certain regulations. However, there are more than 5 700 derelict and unrehabilitated mines of all types in South Africa. Former asbestos operations were among the first to be targeted for clean-up under the programme instituted by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), owing to the proven direct impact of asbestos pollution on health. This paper seeks to investigate the challenges faced by the coal sector as far as mine rehabilitation and closure is concerned. For the purpose of this paper rehabilitation is defined as per the Chamber of Mines Rehabilitation Guidelines publication, which defines rehabilitation as putting the land impacted by mining activities back to a sustainable and usable condition. Some of the current rehabilitation challenges are technical skills (know-how), leadership focus, poor planning, cost saving initiatives, and the government's lack of capacity to enforcement rehabilitation requirements. It is imperative that mining companies identify rehabilitation as a critical strategic pillar that directly influences license to operate. The case study evidence indicates that relevant policies, appointment of accountable people, sufficient leadership support, and the correct choice of rehabilitation equipment can assist to improve the rehabilitation and land management challenge.

ABSTRACT: The proposed paper is aimed at analysing the failure of a steep cliff slope that, in the past, was exploited for open pit mining operations. A volume of over 400,000m3 of gneissic aplitic rock was involved in the slope failure. An evaluation of possible failure mechanisms is given, based on a structural description of the rock mass, a mechanical characterisation and on computation methods. The block theory and limit equilibrium techniques for sliding and block toppling were applied and a comparison is given with the result obtained by using DEM models. RESUME: Le document proposé vise l’analyse des mécanismes de rupture d’une falaise qui a été intéressée dans le passé par une mine à ciel ouvert. Un volume supérieur à 400.000 m3 de aplite-gneiss a été concerné par la rupture de la falaise. Le document fournit une évaluation des possibles mécanismes de rupture, basée sur une description structurale de l’amas rocheu, une caractérisation mécanique et des méthodes de calcul numérique. L’analyse a été développée à l’aide de la théorie des blocs et de la technique de l’équilibre limite, soit pour le glissement que pour le basculement des blocs, et une comparaison avec le résultat obtenu par application des modèles DEM a été effectuée. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die vorgeschlagene Arbeit zielt darauf ab, den Einsturz einer steilen Felswand zu analysieren, an der in der Vergangenheit eine Mine im Übertageabbau betrieben wurde. Der Einsturz betraf ein Volumen von über 400000 m3 an Gneis und Aplit. In der Arbeit ist eine Einschätzung des möglichen Mechanismus angegeben, der zum Bruch geführt hat, und sie basiert auf einer strukturellen Beschreibung der Felsmasse, einer mechanischen Charakterisierung sowie auf der Anwendung von Berechnungsmethoden. Angewandt wurden die Blocktheorie und die Methode der Gleichgewichtsgrenze für das Abrutschen und Kippen von Blöcken. Darüber hinaus wird ein Vergleich mit den Ergebnissen angestellt, die unter Verwendung von DEM-Modellen erzielt wurden.

When gold plant residues are cycloned for producing a coarse product for backfilling the gold and uranium values are upgraded in the backfill product. Gravity concentration, wet high intensity magnetic separation and froth flotation were investigated as first-stage recovery processes to recover these economic values from backfill prior to placement underground. This paper addresses the recovery of values from flotation concentrates and also details the economic feasibility of a treatment route including flotation, followed by roasting of flotation concentrate to liberate gold entrapped in pyrite and reverse gold leaching of the calcine so produced.

This paper summarizes a behavioural safety project undertaken in seven quarries in the UK in order to investigate its applicability as a means of raising the standards of health and safety in the UK quarrying industry. A behavioural safety methodology was developed and trialed at two quarry sites in the UK. During the study the number of unsafe acts and minor accidents had decreased and at one of the quarries there was a 95% reduction in the number of working days lost. It was then introduced at a further five sites of varying sizes and within this focused specifically on lone workers as well as behaviours that affected quality and environmental issues. Positive improvements were noted in most of these operations. The project also looked at the effectiveness of health and safety performance indicators. Here, the common lead and trailing indicators for both safety and health that are commonly used by industry were identified. In consultation with the UK quarrying industry these were then used to identify specific performance measurement criteria that can be used by the quarrying sector to measure performance. Following on from this, a quarry specific health and safety management system specification was developed for large and small quarries.

Rössing Uranium Mine operates a recovery circuit with continuous ion exchange followed by solvent extraction. Serious organic degradation problems were encountered during 1985/6, 2000 and 2005 in the solvent extraction plant. The preferential loss of the tertiary amine extractant was observed during the above-mentioned period. Previous investigations revealed that the tertiary amine was breaking down to nitrosamine, which cannot take part in the exchange reaction with U3O8. A reduction in the redox potential of the solvent extraction plant feed to below 500 mV halted this preferential loss. A lot of effort has been made to try and understand the actual mechanism for nitrosamine formation. Current understanding for the degradation is that formation is due to high nitrates on the strip side of the circuit emanating from nitrates from the precipitation process using ammonia. It is the current belief that pH lower than 3.7 on the strip side results in loading of nitrates onto the solvent. If oxidizing conditions prevail on the extraction side of the solvent extraction circuit, the tertiary alamine will then degrade into nitrosamine. This phenomenon is yet to be established and verified. It has, however, been established that the above process is brought about the following conditions ?High redox potential greater than 550 mV predominately caused by a high Fe3+/Fe2+ratio (4:1) ?Perception that if Fe2+<0.5 g/lit will contribute to high redox ?High concentrations of NO-3 in the conc eluate (feed to SX)/ammonium sulphate (NO-3> 4 g/l based on historic values) ?Presence of Mo as a catalyst ?Tests also have proved that the presence of nitrous acid in a concentration of 1 g/lat 550 mV leads to formation of nitrosamines from alamine.

The Bushveld platinum group metal deposits in South Africa are the largest in the world. These deposits occur as two distinct stratiform tabular ore bodies and strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2300 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Crush pillars are widely used to support the open stopes. These pillars are designed to fail and the residual strength provides the required support resistance to stabilize the stoping excavations. This paper describes the in situ measurement, of stress within a Merensky pillar from Impala Platinum. These measurements were used to derive a stress-strain curve that includes pre and post failure behaviour. 2D FLAC modelling, with strain softening, was done to investigate how damage expands into the hanging- and/or footwall. Although the so-called ?squat? effect is always present, the modelling suggests that it does not dominate the pillar system behaviour at larger width to height ratios. Punching of the pillar into the hanging- and/or footwall increasingly controls the pillar system behaviour with larger width to height ratios. The paper investigates the behaviour of a system that incorporates the immediate hanging- and footwall, as well as the pillar itself.

The difference in the magnetic properties of minerals is the basis for magnetic separation. All minerals can be generally classified as ferromagnetic (strongly magnetic), paramagnetic (weakly magnetic) or diamagnetic (non-magnetic). Magnetic separation can be conducted dry or wet. The majority of the applications of wet magnetic separation in the mining industry are based on the wet drum magnetic separator. The wet drum magnetic separator has been in use for over 50 years and its design is based on a rotating drum installed inside a tank. Inside the drum are stationary, permanent magnets arranged in an arc to provide the magnetic field. These magnets can be of the ceramic ferrite type providing a low intensity magnetic field or of the rare earth type providing a high intensity magnetic field.

A novel mathematical model is presented which describes the behaviour of beds of particles, of uniform size and shape but different densities, during autogenous separations. The approach used in the formulation of the dispersion model is a phenomenological one based on a statistical view, which leads to a diffusion-like representation of the autogenous-separation process. Although the model currently considers only density-related phenomena, it accounts quantitatively not only for the density-segregation aspects of the process but for the interactions between the particles. Quantitative predictions of the dispersion model are compared with the results obtained in tests using a specially constructed experimental batch jig, and it is shown that the model provides an adequate quantitative description of the process for particles of uniform size and shape. It is pointed out that, for the description of more complicated autogenous separations, a more rigorous formulation of the particle drag and density-segregation terms will have to be incorporated into the dispersion model. Nonetheless it is concluded that the model as presented in this paper provides not only a novel insight into the mechanisms of autogenous separations but a means by which to analyse similar systems.

A. Continuous miners, and their operation at Bosjesspruit Colliery J. D. INCH*, B.Sc. (Min.), M. I. Min. E. (Visitor) A brief description is given of the main types of continuous miner and their incidence of application in South Africa. Definitions and descriptions of the design parameters and components of the main cutting head are given. together with an outline of the modifications carried out to improve machine cutting performance. An account is given of experience with the application of water infusion to suppress airborne dust during continuous-miner operations. B. The selection and performance of continuous miners at Matla Coal by J. D. STONE, B.Sc. Eng. (Min.,) M.B.L. (Graduate) The reasons for the choice of continuous miners for the development of accesses and the winning of coal in a modern underground coal mine are discussed. It is shown that, at relatively low depths, the extraction rate as well as the costs are more favourable than those of proved total extraction methods. The selection of a continuous miner is largely dictated by factors such as production rate, capital and running costs, imported content and the extent to which local content and manufacturing are to be increased, manpower requirements, seam thickness, expected floor and roof conditions, and maximum cutting height. The present inherent shortcomings of continuous miners, such as inefficient continuous transportation of coal away from the miner and the lack of an infinitely variable traction to match the sumping speed with the feasible penetration speed, are pointed out. Specific problems encountered and the methods of solving them, as well as a planned trial with a heavy-duty continuous miner, are discussed. C. Continuous mining within the Tavistock Group of collieries I. D. BRUMBY.Dip. Min. (Visitor) The Tavistock Group of collieries is situated some 25 km south of Witbank. The three collieries comprising the Group are Tavistock Colliery, Phoenix Colliery, and South Witbank Coal Mines. Continuous mining is practised to some degree at all three collieries. This system of mining was introduced at Phoenix during 1976, South Witbank during 1978, and Tavistock during 1979. For the twelve months ended June 1979, continuous mining accounted for 1,7 Mt of the 4,5 Mt hauled from underground. All the continuous miners introduced to date have been of the rotary-drum type. D. Pillar extraction at Usutu Collieries using continuous miners by c. J. BEUKES(Visitor) In 1969 Usutu Collieries began pillar extraction with conventional mechanized equipment. This was very successful, but certain disadvantages could be eliminated if continuous miners were used instead. In 1976 the first continuous miner was introduced for this purpose; this proved so successful that a second unit was introduced in 1977, and pillar extraction by conventional equipment was discontinued. By the end of 1978, 1,3 Mt had been mined from pillar extraction by continuous miners. This paper describes the method in some detail, and indicates that the operational costs are lower than for conventional bord-and-pillar mining. This paper summarises some observations regarding the way SAG and AG mills work based on the last ten years of pilot plant operation, grinding circuit design and operational reviews for various projects in Australia and overseas. The main purpose is to promote discussion on key factors influencing breakage in a SAG mill. The focus of the paper is on two questions: ? How do mill lifters and liners really work and have an effect on grinding? ? How does the mill charge composition impact on grinding performance? The focus of the paper is on observations of mill behaviour in both pilot plant trials and plant operation, particularly on Cadia ore. DEM, by others, and JKSimMet modelling of SAG mill performance have greatly assisted in forming the ideas expressed in the paper and both are valuable tools in developing our understanding of the comminution process. Put in the `extreme&apos; form the major observations and conclusions expressed in this paper are that: ? the main purpose of mill lifters is to reduce mill liner wear and not to promote rock breakage; ? the often promoted theory that balls impacting the ?toe of the charge? is a dominant form of breakage is incorrect; and ? fines production in a SAG mill is primarily a function of the rock load mass, with a secondary dependence on ball load for any given circuit configuration.

Exxaro Sands KZN produces?among other heavy mineral products?high titania slag, which is used as feedstock to the pigment industry. The titania slag is produced from the smelting of ilmenite in two 36 MW DC furnaces. In this smelting process carbon monoxide gas is produced. This gas is cooled, scrubbed and washed to remove entrained dust. This paper provides details on the gas cleaning plant system and the chemistry, mineralogy and size distribution of the particulate material contained in the off-gas stream. Characterization of the dust shows that is consists mainly of ilmenite, but with relatively high levels of SiO2and MnO. Smelting of the dust in a 500 kW DC furnace was carried out to investigate the potential for recovering valuable elements from the dust.

A computer program was developed that incorporates a novel analysis of the behaviour of the froth in full-scale cells to predict the performance of the froth over a wide range of operating conditions. The program has the distinct advantage that it can be easily implemented on a microcomputer, which allows rapid computation and processing of the results. The program utilizes experimental data obtained in flotation-plant and laboratory testwork to provide parameters for the froth model under an initial set of operating conditions. These parameters can then be used in conjunction with a model describing the transfer of material from the pulp to the froth to predict the performance of the cell when its dimensions and operating variables are changed during scale-up.

For resources projects with healthy net present value (NPV) and low cash flow volatility, conventional discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis will continue to provide the dominant investment decision-making criteria. However, DCF analysis can be biased because it often applies a single risk-adjusted discount rate (RADR) to compare the value of projects with different risk characteristics. Many of the difficulties with DCF modelling arise from analysts&apos; inability to determine appropriate risk discounts and to estimate expected spot prices inputs for the commodities produced over the life of the project. Modern asset pricing (MAP) is a very valuable complement to DCF analysis in addressing some of these issues. Most papers dealing with MAP, however, while academically rigorous, tend not to be explicit in terms of practical application of this methodology in routine project evaluation. This paper has the objective of reviewing the MAP methodology and of demystifying its complexity, by providing a simple but realistic step-by-step evaluation of a mining project, comparing its DCF and MAP NPV values. The paper concludes that MAP provides a minimum, risk-adjusted `floor&apos; value, thus representing a valuable complement to any DCF valuation.
